New professor in his late 20's. Tests are EXTREMELY specific make sure you memorize those slides (and their notes!) and the very nitty-gritty details about what Clements says. He sometimes says that you don't have to memorize something, but then it pops up on the test, so be sure to just memorize (and understand) every and all concepts.
He spends a lot of time on his slides and his Drake/Spongebob memes (totally a G though). Tests are hard and his class feels more like an intro biochem/bio-orgo class than a regular biology course, but at lease we'll be prepared for the future. Feel bad for those who are not premeds or prescience
Dr. Clement is a good professor who likes to incorporate Drakes and meme into his lectures. He explains the biology concept well and smooth. Like other biology lectures, the test is full of details and you should be prepared to know all of the details that he puts in lecture slides. Review session is very helpful outside of class.
Though a nice professor who seems to really care for his students, he includes way too much information in lecture, and a lot of it you don't even need to know. Yet he also won't tell you what is important, and what is just an FYI kind of thing. He also wastes lots of class time with Top Hat questions, and uses Drake references way too much.
He seems to care about his students, but that doesn't translate at all into how he teaches. He includes too much random information, and his tests are incredibly nit-picky. You could technically put the right answer, but get no credit because you didn't use the exact words they were looking for. AVOID IF POSSIBLE!!! Really nice guy, though.
Some of the content in the lectures was very confusing, but overall really great bio professor who really wants his students to succeed. See him for extra help and go to the review sessions- he drops lots of hints about the tests. I believe test averages were higher than some of the other bio teachers, so if you study hard you should do well.
He is very accessible outside of class and cares a lot about the success of his students. He is a new professor so his lecture style is not very clear and refined yet, but if you learn/understand every detail in his powerpoints you will do well on the tests.
Dr. Clements really cares about his students in the extra effort to help out everyone. If you don't understand concepts, just go to his office and he will gladly help you out if even it's not during office hours. His memes and jokes are solid too. The other BIO professors at Vandy really don't care, so take his section if you can!
Ask him to do extra review sessions! He generally obliges when asked. Love his memes to connect material. Hell post them on the VandyBio Instagram. Class is test heavy, but youll be fine if you attend lecture and ask questions!
Probably THE best STEM professor here! Not only does he teach the material clearly, he does so in a fun way while providing students with ultra-detailed slides that are great for review. His tests are much more direct and to the point than average, and he will do ANYTHING to help his students understand the material, especially in office hours.
Dr. Clements cares more about his students than any professor I've ever had. He is incredibly accessible outside of class and clearly wants his students to succeed. His lectures can sometimes get too specific and it's hard to discern what's actually important. But even then tests were pretty reasonable as long as you take good notes during lecture.
Dr. Clements is one of the most caring professors I've had and is very accessible. However, he is still new to teaching and doesn't have a solid of a grasp on the material. Use the book to double-check him because he takes diagrams from the book. Read these descriptions to help with understanding the processes since tests are process-heavy.
Dr. Clements is super nice and cares about students learning biology. However, he's still new, so he's still figuring out his teaching style and how to best explain certain concepts. Overall, he's so funny and tries to make the class useful and interesting. Would recommend if you're willing to teach yourself some of the material
I loved having Dr. Clements as my professor in BSCI 1510. He cared about us. He had a lot of review sessions outside of class. He made the effort to learn as many kids' names as possible. His tests are not easy but if you work extremely hard, you will definitely do well.
Clements is super helpful and funny and puts jokes on his tests - it's definitely not an easy class but he really takes the time to try to help you understand and hosts review sessions that clear a lot up. All the information is in his lectures which he posts online and you never have to read the book at all.
Dr. Clements is an amazing and caring professor. He is super helpful in office hours and truly cares about students. The material is hard but that is just the nature of the course. His lectures are interesting and he makes them fun. You get to drop one test too which is huge.
Dr. Clements is super invested in his students and does everything to help them succeed. He tries to make lecture super engaging with memes and jokes and explains topics as many times as students need. His exams were super fair but it is Bio so you have to put in a lot of time with the material. His slides have everything you need, don't read book!
Dr. Clements is an amazing guy. He really cares about his students and their success, which is hard to do in a 200 person lecture. He puts a lot of memes in his lectures and none of the exam material is really a surprise. The class is difficult but that's just the nature of biology at Vanderbilt.
Clements is a new professor still getting his groove (as of 2018 Fall) and I feel like a lot of students (pre-meds) are giving him a hard time for it. Sure, he makes some mistakes during lecture, but a student with the smallest amount of motivation to learn would seek him out in office hours. Just use your brain, and you'll be fine. Solid choice.
Wow! This professor is THE guy to take for intro bio, and don't let anyone else tell you otherwise. Nowhere else will you be able to find someone as caring and passionate about the material who is also able to teach it in a fun and memorable way. His slides have everything you need, so don't buy the textbook! Tests are straightforward and fair!
Professor Clements doesn't really know what he's doing and wastes a lot of time in class on TopHat. You need to study the slides (don't buy the book). Tests are straightforward and he cares a lot about his students. You want to do relatively well in Graham's half, but this will raise your overall grade.
Professor Clements is an amazing Professor! He tries to really hard to make class engaging and often peppers in jokes. Pay attention to the in-class activities because he takes mostly from them on the exams. Would recommend!
Professor Clements even has LAs in his Office Hours! Really take advantage of all the opportunities to help you understand the material!
Wastes a lot of time in class doing TopHat, trying to utilize the LAs, but then rushes through the material. His tests are very straightforward though which is misleading after Graham's more difficult exams. Dr. Clements is definitely passionate and a good choice for intro bio. It feels like a high school class with "in class assignments"
Dr. Clements is an amazing Professor! He gives us time in class to think out things for ourselves rather than just spoon feeding us everything. The use of LAs was good and sometimes the activities went too long. I really liked how most of the LAs were women when the course was taught by two men.
One of the best Professors hands down! He's very accessible and answers his emails very quickly! Come to Office Hours because there's usually a big group and it's a great way to find study buddies!
Dr. Clements is a hilarious professor that believes that everyone should be able to succeed -- that biology is not a weed out class. He presents class material very clearly and provides in-class notes that help students study and prepare for the exams. His exams are fair and he makes it as straightforward as possible.
He's genuinely a super nice and funny guy - he wants to see you succeed. Takes attendance with Tophat every day. Lectures are sort of useful, but tests are based entirely of the powerpoints, and are super straightforward (the averages on his tests are in the 80s).
I took BSCI 1510 this summer and it was all online. I thought Dr. Clements did a great job with this transition and he made every effort to give us feedback and meet with us often. Definitely come to the zoom meetings and participate! Would recommend for the fall online semester highly! :)
Dr. Clements is a great professor. He clearly loves teaching biology, and really heightened my passion for it through his lectures, even being online this semester. He likes to include memes to keep you entertained, and will even take memes made by students. His tests aren't over arbitrary material. If you pay attention, you will do well.
Best Professor and the sunshine of bio department! Deeply care about students! Office hour was helpful and full of joy! Dr. Clements and his TA, Dr. Kevin, write email to students every week about this week's goal, which is extremely helpful that everyone would read until the end!
Although I've had Professor Clements this past semester in a lab setting, he's been the best professor I've had at Vanderbilt. He genuinely cares about his students, and wants them to understand the content thoroughly. He's very detailed in the information provided, and also gives incredible feedback. Easily accessible, and a great person overall.
Dr. Clements made bio lab so much fun and really packs a lot of information into each lab period. He also is very accessible outside of lab hours and is great at describing complex ideas in simpler terms (I especially love his analogies). Didn't have him for lecture but would definitely recommend having him as a prof!
He definetely wasn't a great lecturer and I had to take advantage of office hours and youtube to fully understand the material, BUT he has the easiest most straightforward tests I could ever ask for. If you want to make it out as a premed, TAKE HIM.
Dr. Clements is a great professor to have for intro bio. He made an effort to come to LA meetings frequently, even when it wasn't his turn for giving lectures. He loves his biology memes, and he's equally great at making lectures interesting. I would take another class of his in a heartbeat.
He's a really cool dude who is trying to change the current status quo of intro bio being a weed-out class. Really fun to hang out with outside class, I've kinda befriended him that way.
Dr. Clements is the absolute best professor I have ever had in my time at Vandy. The expectation of any intro to bio class is that you won't really get close to your professor but Dr. Clements is always available to chat and provides amazing feedback and advice. Enjoy pics of his cat, Dr. Kevin, and chat him up at any time because he's a g
Clements was great to take online. He was a really caring professor who is willing to explain anything to you as long as you ask. His lectures online can definitely jump around a little bit, but as long as you watch the lectures and do your work and study, you'll be fine. He's a good teacher!
Clements is a gem. His online lectures were easy to understand and 15 minutes long. I attribute much of my success in the class to the LA's and the flipped class. Honestly, his part of the class felt like my high school bio class (most people didn't agree with this). I'm not sure if this trend will carry over to in person classes.
Dr. Clements is such a nice guy, really. He's funny and wants to get to know his students and will admit when he doesn't know something, which I appreciate. However, I will say that the tests were EXTREMELY hard and the information was not taught in a way that made it easy to understand. A lot of it has to be done on your own.
The class is harder than the professor. Regardless of what professor you get for BSCI 1510, it's going to be hard but Dr. Clements tests and lectures make him the best choice.
Dr. Clements genuinely cares about his students so much. He breaks down topics in a way that makes it easier to understand and reminds us that this isn't a weed out class. He wants everyone to succeed and will help in doing so with memes and metaphors! Highly recommend him; he gives great lectures as well
Dr. Clements is amazing. He teaches complex topics using memes. He taught his class this year as a flipped classroom. His lectures were fun to watch, although they were a bit disorganized. His test questions are sometimes confusing, but he is a lenient grader.
Incredible professor. Class is taught flipped classroom, and in person time is used for small group discussion of HW with Learning Assistants. I loved the format of the class, but some of my peers felt differently. Clements loves to add meme/jokes to his slides, and makes the class enjoyable. Genuinely does not want BSCI 1510 to be a weed out.
Prof Clements is a wonderful and engaging teacher. He is very nice and understanding but makes you work for every bit of your grade. He is helpful in office hours and his recorded lectures are well organized. Tests are very fair.
Clements is fine. His lectures and homework were briefer than Friedman's, but this often led to a lack of depth. His tests are not extraordinarily difficult. My main gripe is that he doesn't answer questions. He'll dance around an answer but never fully explain or have a fellow student give a convoluted answer. Tries very hard to be liked.
Dr. Clements is an amazing professor and is truly dedicated to helping students, being accessible and inclusive, and promoting quality learning! He holds office hours on weekends, has a whole class discussion board, has test corrections, and is great at science communication. The LA program really enhances learning and connects you to peers!
Nice but kind of annoying. He wasn't willing to change grades for incorrect test answers he wrote which was annoying. His lectures were super boring. He tried to crack jokes a lot but they just aren't funny. They were giving science teacher trying to be funny with biology puns but nobody laughs. Not the vibe at 9 am, Dr. Clements. Id pass on C dog.
I had Dr. Clements during his first year teaching and it was truly great because he showed me that he cares about empowering students to ask questions about science. There's a lot of material but go to office hours or ask an LA so you can learn before the exam and not complain about your grade! DC is smart, supportive, and super friendly, so ask!
Clements is nice and explains concepts well. His exams are well thought-out and he is by far the best biology professor. Just be prepared that the content of his lectures is not in what he says, but what is written in the slide notes. He tries hard to be cool but it falls flat. Still the best of the professors and the most approachable.
Dr.Clements is an amazing prof. He uses memes to explain the complicated biological processes and his lectures are typically concise. He cracks jokes here and there, sometimes it's funny sometimes it's not, but that's okay. I feel like he really tries his best to motivate us to learn and not want 1510 to be a weed-out (tho it is by nature)
Clements is super nice and caring. He's really not trying to fail you but it is a hard class with a lot of content. He has a bio meme instagram page and I think he wants learning to be fun and enjoyable.
Best bio professor to take class with!
As long as you study the worksheets he gives you. You'll be fine. Pay attention to lectures because he only goes over things that will be on the exam. Also I love Dr.Kevin.
If you're a first-year, this is the move. There is a lot of content, and the questions can be challenging, but Clements provides a ton of practice. In addition, there are a few cushion grades, such as online quizzes and attendance. Regardless, go to office hours; he incorporates students' questions into his exams and explains concepts well.
His flipped classroom did not work well, as many of his videos contained errors. Students learned false information and would have to change misconceptions at a later time, damaging learning. Test questions were either trying to be funny or trying to relate to students which distracted from the actual material being covered.
Dr. Clements is a really cool guy, and a really great teacher too. Unfortunately, his exams were so difficult they left me wanting to change my major. Would still recommend him just because he makes class fun and is better than the alternatives, but be prepared to really grind for his exams.
flipped classroom is extremely ineffective and difficult to follow. he is a nice person but not a good professor. way too difficult for an intro class. your LA is VERY important, because professors don't really do much. he assigns 3-5 videos at 18-25 minutes each per night, but it ends up taking 2-3 hours because you have to write down everything
Dr. Clements is awesome and probably the strongest professor in the introductory biology courses at Vanderbilt. He really cares and puts a lot of effort into helping students. He does mostly flipped classes, where you watch videos before class and work on worksheets during class. It's a different style, but he makes it work.
Dr. Clements is probably one of the most likable professors at Vanderbilt. I enjoyed the class overall, but his lecture style didn't quite fit with mine. I like the idea of going through a worksheet for class, but only every now and then. I feel like it's hard for me to retain everything if that's done every class.
Dr. Clements is very caring, but the tests were difficult for many because of how much content was presented in little time. I wouldn't retake him because I hate flipped classroom and the videos got long sometimes, but he's a great guy. PSA: HE BURPS AND MAKES MOUTH NOISES IN HIS VIDEOS!!! If you have a pet peeve of mouth noises, be warned.
BSCI 1510 is difficult because it is like drinking from a hire hose for the amount of information you need to memorize. There is also lots of extraneous information that you do not need to know, but is hard to tell which is which. Dr. Clement's section has flipped lectures and has LAs that can help you with in-class practice questions.
Flipped classroom is not a great method to teach biology. It is quite difficult for bsci 1510. Tests are in person as well.
If you're taking notes on the videos, it takes a good 3 hours. He also burps and makes crazy mouth noises in lecture videos, which honestly should be edited out. He often reads off the slides in the videos and sometimes doesn't explain what that means. It makes some concepts super-confusing, but he does have discussion posts for questions.
Dr. Clements definitely knows what he's doing both in regards to the teaching the material and educating students effectively. He uses his LA's well, and his classroom is flipped. That didn't matter too much for me, but if you don't like lots of recorded pre-lecture videos, then you're in for a tough time. Exams are hard, but he's a great guy!
Dr. Clements does flipped classrooms, and the videos he posts are pretty dense. Though it may seem like they are only an hour long, it does take like five. The tests are also pretty hard since he likes to do mutation questions. The best advice would be to condense your notes from each lecture because BSCI 1510 is a lot.
Dr. Clements was a great professor and made learning the content very simple. Was flipped classroom which I enjoyed, but it can be hard for some. It's a lot of content to memorize and understand, but the application was not that difficult. His exams are hard but you have all the information needed. He uses the LA's a lot! Hard class, great guy!
I wish Dr. Clements was as good at lecturing as he is at cracking jokes. I found the LA teaching days on Fridays more helpful than the worksheets done in class for test preparation. I understand condensing lectures, but pausing every 5 seconds gets old quickly. I like the idea of learning the material before class, but the execution was lacking imo
Clements portion of the class is entirely flipped lecture style which made it so you have to spend a lot of time outside of class in order to learn the content. It is a high time commitment, but the videos do contain most of the information you need. The tests however require you to apply the information not just recall it which requires more.
I'm very concerned about Tom Clements' relationship with his cat. Gotta be illegal in some states fr.
DC is one of the best professors I've ever had. He's super friendly and caring and he's just like a big brother that knows just a little more bio than you. If you give a reasonable answer on a test he'll always give you credit, there's not a set, mandatory answer for many questions. Be sure to rate his cat, Dr. Kevin on rate my (5 stars)!
This class is flipped, meaning you'll have to watch videos before each class. Memorize the videos and their slides. 4 exams, 1 drop, and homework grade (easy) gives like 6%. Class time is spent on worksheets covering material learnt. Dr. Clements is a fantastic person, wants to know as many students as possible. Have to take this section of 1510.
This class is naturally hard due to the content covered and the really hard exams. However. Dr. Clements is so incredibly caring and supportive during and outside of class. He does really advocate for mental health and is always here to listen and understand. The flipped structure is not personally for me, so be aware of that.
My dawg. Made one of the hardest STEM classes at Vandy easier than most. Very friendly, engaging, and willing to help. Just needs to stop burping in his flipped classroom lectures.
Dr. Clements is a Vanderbilt gem and a really great person. Loves interacting w/ and guiding students. His portion is flipped however and videos sometimes take >2 hrs to watch + take notes. Great lecturer/explainer. Review and LA sessions saved me on test questions. Everything you need for exams is on the slides. Easily the better 1510 section.
Genetics is a strange class, I feel like the averages are low but I seemed to do ok even without studying a ton and I don't consider myself to be a genius or anything at all. Maybe there are a lot of seniors that don't care as much in their last semester. Otherwise, I think DC's tests are really easy and straightforward. Practice to do well.
Based on practice exams from previous semesters, it seems like without Dr. Clements, genetics would've been hard. He's a fun guy and wants you to do well. He gives a lot of partial credit. I once gave a bogus answer on a test question that asked why a technique can't be done by just saying maybe the lab has no funds and got it marked right.
I personally did not enjoy the flipped classroom, where we had to watch lecture videos before coming to class. We did not do anything in class other than ask questions, which did not help me learn the material.
I appreciate the flipped model since everything is online for easy review. Tests are hard since it is applying knowledge however he is very generous with extra credit. Test averages hovered around 79 and class average at the end is bumped to B-. He does make a lot of mouth noises in his video lectures. Class time was just reviewing the content.
Nice enough guy. The exams are really brutal in a non-constructive way. Preaches "application" of content but tends to get insanely in the weeds and far-fetched with exam questions, such as his little stint over CRISPR. Did well in the class but had to literally live and breathe the content, which shouldn't be the case for a 1000-level class.
His content is hard, but Clements has lots of office hours. He provides a lot of content due to the flipped classroom, so be prepared to do a lot of work outside class. It is annoying that he covers a lot of topics in greater depth than we need to know them, but he doesn't test a lot on things he doesn't teach. Tests weren't awful but not easy.
Dr. Clements is a nice person who seems to care about his students. It's a flipped classroom, so videos before class, which wind up being a few hours of work. Did fine, but certain exam questions and lectures just did not belong in an intro course.
professor doesnt care about students and makes tests too hard
He will grade you on the most minute detail on the lecture. For the final, the majority of the lectures weren't even covered.
Dr. Clements is very caring and approachable. Content is covered for about 20 minutes in class(flipped) and the worksheet is completed the rest of class. I found this style to be difficult since the content was sped through and required previous understanding. The test questions were extremely out of the box and were advanced for an intro class.
Overall good professor who cares about his students learnings. He isn't a great test writer, though, as his questions can be poorly worded and confusing, and reach into niche applications of topics. His half of the class is definitly the harder half, but he's nice.
I genuinely don't understand all the hype around him. He is a sassy man who doesn't understand that part of his contract is to TEACH the class, not through some videos on Brightspace and expect us to become masters at it. His exams are unnecessarily hard and unfair, and as someone who got an A, Patton carried this class without a doubt
I do not like him professionally or personally. His LAs carry the class entirely. He burps in the videos you are required to watch to learn ALL of his content. Which is gross and unprofessional. Not to mention he doesn't explain topics well either. He also claims to care but when you go to him for guidance… all you really get is a “that's rough”
dr. clements is a nice person, but his teaching style didn't resonate with me. he moved fast to cover a ton of content, so you have to do a lot of independent study, but even then you can get very lost. i put a ton of effort into his section and still didn't do well, and not even patton's section could bring me back up. harder than gen chem imo.
Textbook definition of BOSS QUEEN
This section was definitely the better section to take this year. However, Clements portion of exams contain a lot of mutations that make no sense and awkward wording. I enjoyed his flipped classroom as I was able to repeatedly watch his videos when reviewing, though.
