He is a great teacher. Very easy to understand and very helpful. He makes history very interesting and I find his teaching method to be very organized and effective. Notes aren't too long because he focuses more on concepts. He also adds trivia that helps you remember facts. Exam questions are all in your notes! Paying attention in class = Easy A.

He is clear and concise which is EXTREMELY rare for a history prof aside from Alford. Class goes by quickly, there are discussion classes which enable you to grasp the concepts even better. He is young but delivers his lectures better than most of the more experienced profs. Just study his study guide and write the paper and you will ace the class.

Mr. Cogliano is a great teacher. He is very passionate about what he teaches. His test are always off what he has lectured about, so really need to attend class. There is only one research paper and it is reasonable. He doesn't assign much reading other than for class disscussions.

The best history professor on earth! His lectures are so interesting and I have never found history interesting in high school. Tests were easy for me. I used my iPhone and recorded his lectures which helped me study. He also brings in food sometimes! If I had to take history again I would choose him 100% Easy A!

HE'S SO CUTE! lol and he's really nice! his lectures are straight to the point, DO take a lot of notes! you don't really need the text book (i rented it and not once opened it). you have 3 tests and one paper, pretty easy for the most part. everything in the notes is on the test. such an awesome professor

Honestly, this guy was one of the best teachers I've had in a long time. He really knows history. I was amazed at how he can remember ever little detail about Western History from the (date, time, people involved) without ever looking at the book, I dont think he once looked at the book or notes to teach this class. His enthusiasm for history translates clearly into his lectures and it really helps you retain the information for the tests so it made studying for the exams very easy. Very knowledgeable of the subject matter. He advocates the use of a textbook, but you do not need it (his lectures cover everything) he doesn't assign homework, just 3 tests per class including the final. He gives out study guides for each test which if you do those, you will ace the test. The research paper is heavily weighted so don't ignore it!

Really good instructor. Makes HIS really interesting. He stays on topic & knows material really well. Always offers to help students. Two exams are directly from his lectures so going to class is very important. Research Paper due at the end. Minus points for writing everything on the board which takes more time. You'll enjoy the class.

Excellent professor! Very organized, stays on topic,and easy to understand. Gives a review that is similar to the exam and extra credit on the exam.There is a 5-7pg research paper that you have all semester to work on. You don’t need the book, just take good notes or record the lectures. Be on time, he is punctual. Oh and he loves football LOL.

Easy class, just have to go to class each day to take notes. The 5-7 page essay was honestly the hardest part of the class, and that wasn't all that bad. Lecture based so if your prone to sleeping, I would not recommend Prof. Cogliano

He looks like a nerd but when he starts teaching he will throw you off. Studied in NOva for over 2 years and he is the best teacher i have seen. He knows History and the way he teaches is just mesmerizing. Mr. Thomas also tells you interesting stuff that you never knew and keeps on making the class more interesting. Great teacher!

3 tests including final. test are NOT cumulative. one 5-7 page essay. He gave our class 2 extra credit chances: a review of a movie and a visit the Holocaust museum in D.C. He is literally the best teacher ever! So enthusiantic about history and he keeps the class constantly interested and knows the dates off the top of his head!

Easy A class. I had him for the 6 week class. 2 tests. 1 paper. 35 questions on test. 35 multiple choice, 10 true or false, choose 4 of 6 write definition. No textbook. Must take notes from board. If study notes, test is very easy. Definitely recommend if you don't mind writing the entire class

Just Amazing

Overall it was a very fun history class! I am taking Cogliano's US History 2 class because of how good the first US History class was. The tests are easy. You do have to take notes but you learn and have fun doing so. That is the best way I can describe his class. So take him!

I took professor Cogliano last year for HIS 101 & 102. I would take him again because he was so great!! History was my least favorite subject until his class. I took Prof Thomas a year ago and from how i saw my grades i thought that i would receive a C but I ended up with an A. His extra credits go a long way and he also gives 2 extra credit assignments which helped. The class was boring too me because i have no interest in history but he does have a lot of knowledge! Professor Cogliano is a dedicated professor who knows his material inside out. He is a tough grader for essays and tests, although it is an easy A if you put in the effort. The way this professor teaches history is very fast paced, although not to boring. He gives study guides that outline material on test. Easy A if the effort is there.

FANTASTIC TEACHER. His notes are all written on the board and his lectures are clear and interesting. This is the first history class I have actually enjoyed. LOVE this prof! He's great at lecturing (I took a summer class) I learned so much during his class. One essay, two exams, and a final. I am currently taking us history 2 and so far this class under this teacher is living up to the reputation that he has. Cogliano is a gem and a true class act teacher. His lectures are genuinely fun stories

In addition to what others wrote below he also is so flexible and understanding. He gives a lot of flexibility for students that have emergencies that impact their lives and he offers a ton of extra credit to help students

Professor Coglianos history classes are amazing! He knows how to communicate and how to lecture effectively. Years ago, my older sister took his class and called his lectures adult story time.

Professor Cogliano supplies compelling primary documents that make his history lectures compelling and thought provoking. He goes to great lengths to include extra resources that boost his class. I have enjoyed reading them all. He makes learning history so understandable.

I took Cogliano's US history class last year and it allowed me to understand so much of this nation's history that I never got in public high school. I appreciate what this professor did and I hope there is an opportunity for me to take another class with him again!

What also makes cogliano's classes so effective is his great sense of humor that he uses for hilarious punchlines in his lectures. He is not monotone nor boring at all

He is really nice, makes sure you understand what he is teaching and the tests are pretty easy If you pay attention to the lecture. So try not to miss class. He gives extra credit.

One of the best teacher I've taken in my time here. Very funny, knows what he's talking about and promotes fun interactions,activities and debates to make things more interesting- even giving some basically free in-class extra credit. While his lectures are pretty long and you 100%cannot afford to skip class, if you always attend you'll likely pass

Definitely would recommend, not a history person but had me extremely engaged.

Great professor who's enthusiasm for history makes the students want to learn. He made 3 hour lectures go by very fast. Graded by 3 exams and 1 paper, but also offers a few extra credit opportunities. Attendance is mandatory (in my opinion) since he gives you so much information and the exam study guide doesn't cover everything on the exams.

I want to tell you about Professor Cogliano. He is by far the BEST professor at NOVA/if you need to take a history course. He is the most GENEROUS, CARING & PASSIONATE professor Ive met. I had some personal life issues causing me to delay turning a paper in and he was super understanding of it. Lots of respect for him! Takes notes, show up, pass!

Took him based on his rating, believe me, he is as good as everyone says. All lectures are on the board (NO ppts). He makes history fun and easy to understand. Tests are EXACTLY like the study guides; do them and its a breeze. EC opportunities too. I am an engineering major and after taking him, I legit considered a minor in history... Take him!

Passionate lectures. Note taking is imperative. Graded on 3 non cumulative tests, a 5 to 7 page paper, participation and attendance. If you miss a lecture make sure you have someone to get notes from. Gives extra credit opportunities.

Professor Cogliano is a fantastic professor. His lectures are amazing, even though he does it the old fashion way by writing notes on the whiteboard. There is a term paper however, and it's quite tedious, but it should still be easy. Attendance, Midterm, Term paper, and the Final made up the grades in his class. I would definitely take him again.

Professor Cogliano is so good of a teacher he made 4 hour long summer classes almost enjoyable. Make sure to go to class and take good notes as everything that's on the test he writes on the whiteboard. I doubt there's a better history teacher at NOVA so if you have the chance to take him make sure you do.

BEST PROFESSOR AT NOVA!!! He is literally the nicest individual ever. 3 exams throughout the semester and one 4-6 research paper. Exams are so easy and it is straight off the study guide! DEFINITELY RECOMMEND THOMAS COGLIANO!!!

Professor Cogliano has excellent pedagogy: he's an entertaining lecturer and also really knows the material. He's also willing to explain things if you didn't quite get them the first time. Fair warning: you have to show up to class and take good notes, because his tests draw heavily from his lectures. Several opportunities for extra credit.

Easiest history class, just pay attention and he keeps you entertained even during a late night course
