class is trial by fire. Do the work, READ or you will get burnt.
Definitley an aquired taste, a little crazy, but in that wacky professor sort of way. Not for the slight of heart, and not for Conservative Republicans - unless you're prepared to defend yourself.

a real jerk. stay as far away from this man as possible. so high on himself and goes out of his way to tell others that, esp his students. and then tells his students how moronic they are
No Comments
This is the single meanest person I have ever met. He trashes his students behind their backs.
He knows what he's talking about. Get ready to be put under the spotlight. Very flexible on due dates and deadlines as long as you tell him in ADVANCE.
Yes,he knows what he is talking about. However, that does not make him a good teacher. He degrades his students in class. Some of the kids w/self esteem issues found this to be funny, but most of his class was annoyed.
He made me cry in class.
Bad attitude/Hyper and distracting. Tends to ignore his student's opinions.

this man is a jerk, he degrades students and holds grudges for petty things, which he refers to when giving grades. If you take this man's class be prepared to be told that all your previous knowledge is wrong and made to feel stupid!
Make sure you read all of the required material, or you're toast because he will put you on the spot the next time you meet. Papers are easy if you know what he's looking for. Connolly likes to lecture. Also, make sure you listen.
Whoever can't handle his so called "degredation" can't handle someone who just likes to keep you on your toes. He plays the wacky professor to a T, makes you feel pressure to OH MY GOD actually show up to class prepared and then in the end is a
Great teacher, all levels of the education system need more like him. IF you cant take his class, then you shouldnt be in school. Stop whining
I thought he was a jerk at first too. But then I changed my attitude like the bitter students here should have, and actually did my work. Once I did, I could participate, and once I did that, I am sure he could recognize a student who added to the discussion. I wish all teachers forced u to work
Man, I love this guy. Sure, at first he seems like he's going to be a real jerk, but after that you come to understand that he's just honest about the way the world works, and the way school SHOULD work. As long as you do the work and handle class maturely you'll be fine, because he's totally fair.
World's greatest professor of all time-Go Connolly
Perhaps one of the most engaging professors of my academic career. He is not degrading; if you can't appreciate sardonic wit, don't take him. I learn from his classes, and that is what it's about. Not whether or not he will make you feel like you're back in High School. Wake up and smell college.
I don't think he's impossible. But the persona gets old. Also,he doesn't alwayys act in the most ethical way outside of the classroom.
fantastic, sarcastic, brilliant.
Jeez, what's with everyone? He's okay. He's hyper, and he does his best to keep everyone's attention. He can be petty and childish, and it is meant to come off as hyperbole, but sometimes it doesn't. Overall,I'd say he's ok if you can't stay awake in class without someone freakin out for an hour.
I've taken him a few times and he is nuts but you know what to expect and you learn a lot! More than from any other prof actually. Yeah, i know he gives extra credit assignments to some and not to others, and maybe that's not fair, but overall he more than fair.
Tom,please stop writing your own ratings. You're using the same language you use in the classroom.
you will come out of prof. connolly's class learning a lot more than beofre you took it. he works his students hard because he wants to further improve them. sure- he has little man syndrome in class, but he is the nicest guy outside the class. just keep up with the readings and you are all set.
He works his students hard and he is a little degrading but I think he is great. He made the class interesting and he was always willing to help you improve.
Connolly is one of the most amazing professors I have ever encountered. He could be teaching at a much better school than Suffolk, no he is not easy, and he actually makes you come to class a novel idea in college eh...but he is so engaging if you actually like English then he is your professor.
He is funny, smart and wonderful. I wouldn't miss his class for the world.
He's smart enough, but he really seems to hate what he's doing.
Foolish and needlessly cruel. Does anyone really buy this?!!
He's mean. It's not conductive. It's not giving him an edge. It's just lame.
Best professor I've ever had. Hard but grades fairly. He doesn't take himself seriously, that's the joke.
uptight jerk
You learn the material when you take his class. I agree that he can occasionally be condescending and overemotional, but his enthusiasm for the material can rub off on you. All things considered he is a good professor.
Connolly's straightforward approach to teaching focuses directly on that. He's blunt, but fair.He may be very hard to take if you are sensitive, but I am coming out of his class a better student. He challenges you, and makes you a better student.Don't even think about skipping his class.Absence Essays
He is the best English professor at Suffolk University. It is really surprising that he teaches at Suffolk. Yes, he is very hard, but he can turn an average student into the best one. He is definitely extremely smart and intelligent. If you are a responsible student and wiling to learn and fulfill all class requirements, you can get an A.
Wow, is he teaching theatre class or trying out for a B movie?
Great teacher. One of the very few to keep me awake and interested! He's straight forward about all work and grades fairly. Take this teacher.
i loved how this guy always knew who didn't do the homework, and would proceed to tear them a new one in class... just do your work and answer a few questions, and you'll be fine
Complete jerk! Made us take 2 tests that counted the first day of class because a cell phone went off. Cruel and mean for no apparent reason. Drop his class immediately!!
Intelligent, passionate, engaged with his work. He expects the same from his students. The witty banter in the classroom should not be taken as a means to allow him to show off. Throw it back at him (in a civil way) and he'll appreciate it. Besides that, keep your head in your books, your hand in the air, and you will have a good time. I never skipped a class, and I never would. Always kept me interested!
This guy rocks! Super witty and knows his stuff
If your not willing to go to class everyday then dont take this professor. He will make a fool out of you if you come in late. If you talk durring class and have any knowledge of what you read for classes you will get a good grade. And he is SOOOO HOT.
this guy is so cool, his class is interesting and he explains clearly thats nic e to be in his class. however he should avoid that stupid stuff about giving test when phone ringing thats really unfair for others student!!!!
It was a very intense class.

He is opinionated, intense, demanding, witty, and at times scary. At first I was actually afraid of him but as the semester went on I found him funny and interesting. Don't drop the class right at first. We had barely any work although he said at first we would share our writing at all times, which we didn't do. Just don't miss class!!!
Don't take him unless you want to learn. If you actually want to be educated instead of just getting an easy A he is an amazing teacher. If you don't plan on showing up or you're an idiot, take somebody else. NO CELL PHONES!
If you care about English or are an English major or just want to learn, take his class and you'll come back every year for more. If you are going to let your cellphone go off, come in late, not come the first week, be an idiot, etc, DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. He will make you look like an ass in front of the whole group and you'll drop anyway.
This proffessor has actually made me feel uncomfortable about my major of English. I once was a Shakespeare lover and very intrested in drama. Now I am only filled with a clouded head of worries and complications about the subject. He eats, sleeps, and breathes his subjects, yet is too caught up with himself as a snob to actually help you learn.
This professor is very fun to listen to, but fun only goes so far. If you are concerned with keeping a high GPA, do not take this class. I've gotten all A's in an honors literature course, but in his class, I've yet to get above a B-. He teaches like it's a Grad school class at Harvard. No help, no guidance, just criticism. He's more or less, a jer
Do the work-do what he says-get an a
The usual
Your initial impressions may be unfavorable. Several people drop the class because he is prone to biting their heads off the first few weeks. Nonetheless, he is fascinating. He has the ability to keep you entertained throughout the class. He expects graduate level work from freshmen, but the overall experience will make you a better student.
If you are the type of person who considers a hangover a medical excuse for missing class, Connolly will eat you alive. If you stay in his class, know that the policies on the syllabus are not hyperbole - he can act quite draconian sometimes but that's what you sign up for. Come prepared and with a thick skin and you might actually learn something.
I didn't learn anything from the class. I took the class, after I read comments from this site and it's not what I expected. He's not helpful, the writing assignments are difficult, and it's not worth taking his class.

he acts like a dick the first couple days of class but it's all just an act. he's really interesting and holds your attention. you have to go to each class or write an essay for each one you miss. he grades really hard on papers, i got all c's, and he gives random quizes on the reading that i usually failed, but somehow i ended up with an a.
He is a refreshing change from most SU professors. If you are easily intimidated then you may not be ready for him. If you like a challenge then he will be the best teacher you ever had. I am an English major and he told me my writing needed serious help. After heeding his advice, I did well and was grateful for the honesty.
If you read the stuff and show up and just do what it says on the hand out thing you will get an A. If you want to fail he will make it easy for you! Yeah, he's kind of psycho, but in a fun way. I hate the ones who act like they took him before and know everything though.

He is a complete idiot! He is unprofessional and rude. He once wrote on my paper-I can't believe you made it this far.For the past six years, that note haunted me. He should not be teaching adults. Anyways, I've received my MSW so he can kiss my butt!
Yes and yes and yes!
He was one of my first teachers I had after transferring to Suffolk. He is a little out there, but he knows his stuff and is helpful. Sometimes he's a little mean, but you don't get better or learn by telling yourself you're good already. He scared me at first, but at the same time I was impressed at the fact he rarely looked at lecture notes.
This guy is brilliant. One of the most critical people I have ever met and I love every second of it. I have him for Su101, and let me tell you, this guy is so sharp. From class long rants which are always entertaining and true, to his brutal sarcasm. He is amazing.
He may be scary at first but he is a genious! My class with him was @ 8am and he woke us up with sarcasm. He knows what he's doing. I learned so much from him. He was critical but I thought he was doing us all a favor because that's what's out there in the real world.
Professor Connolly is awful, he tries very hard to scare you into dropping his class, but that is just a test. If you stay past the Add/Drop point he becomes a sweetheart, that drinks from a tea cup.
I am in theater and I think he is too!
Love him! We had his class at 8 am and he always barging in a little late but full of life. He was really critical of writing assignments and has a really dry sense of humor and a biting sarcasm. It's easy to do well in his class if you take the time to read and interpret material, as well as give a clear and intelligent opinion during discussions.
Prof. Connolly scared you? Poor babies. He may be different in his candidness and sarcasm but at least he refuses to surrender to the narcissistic tendencies of this generation of students. If you are still "haunted" by a comment he left on your paper, you seriously need to get over yourself and frankly, I cant belive you made it this far either.
I love him! Best professor I have ever had! Brilliant, funny and dedicated. He's overly dramatic and I love every minute of it! And his bow ties are awesome.
fair warning, do not take his class unless it is the only english course you're taking that semester. The work he assigns requires more attention than it appears at first glance. Also, if you decide to take one of his drama courses, have previous knowledge of the theater, otherwise you'll only understand about half of what is going on in his class d
Ugh. He is the last person that I want to hear talking in the morning.
AMAZING--He bought us ice cream.TOTAL HONESTY.LEARNED ALL ABOUT SUFFOLK. Take him.
He bought you ice cream? He never bought us ice cream. Seriously love Connolly. HILARIOUS!
Great guy, great teacher. He drops the tough guy act after the first few weeks. Take his class.
Greetings to Tom from Ostrava University, we will always remeber your brilliant classes :-) Marketa
LOVED THIS CLASS. awesome guy, could definitly learn a lot from an awesome person. TRULY amazing and so intelligent
He was a great teacher, fun, made the topics interesting and made you think. I truly wish more teachers would adopt his style. He challenges you but in the end you are definitely better for it. I would recommend him highly.
It was hard to figure out at first but at the end it made sense. He is the most demanding ever. But grades fair.
I took an English class with Dr Connolly in 2000.When I compare Dr Connolly to other professors,he is unequivocally the best. His knowledge of European culture is outstanding. He knew of Stefan Zweig, who many professors have never heard of.Dr Connolly is a sophisticated, cultured intellectual person.I am glad I was his student.
The most rediculous teacher ive ever had. He is very smart but constantly will pick on you. You have to write a paper for every class that you are absent. Constantly spends most of the class lecturing about how you are not doing enough as a student.
VERY tough, but fair. Its hard to sense if he's serious or not at the beginning, but with time you'll understand he's dramatizing everything. If you have questions, he ALWAYS has answers (sometimes they're not helpful, but he still has plenty). - and for SF156 specificcally - START THE PAPER AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SEMESTER LIKE HE SAID!! Trust me
Very hard.. he's a great guy though, fun class
Yeah, hard, but fair, and funny sometimes, mean too.
I really liked him as a teacher until grades came out and he gave people that didn't do any work A's. I understand playing favorites but padding grades is crap.
You will learn how important it is kill zombies (everybody else other than the people in class)
The haters hate him because it's a class for vampires. Kill the zombies!
He's an absolutely brilliant professor who really wants his students to succeed. He challenges you to the point you want to tear your hair out but in the end you feel a better student for it all. Take his classes if you really want to learn something unique in college: how to think for yourself!
He's a great professor. He's only tough to those who "eat with their hands".
True, true that, "Professor O.' He keeps you guessing all the time, and you think he's out to get you, then he gives everybody "a bonus" because you did good work.
Never thought I would get an A.
It's like a class on everything and theater and plays.
A brilliant guy!! really crazy!! be ready to discuss really controversial topics like racism and hitler. Put a lot of though in his papers, DO NOT WRITE BS and do the MLA work cited perfectly... do not memorize the poem the last day.
He is very eccentric which keeps class interesting and I found that I was never tempted to skip class with him. He gives a lot of reading but they are all very interesting and worth spending the time on. He is very easy on grading and relaxed about deadlines but can seem intimidating. Anyone with an interest in theater or English should take this
He is a very interesting teacher. First day he comes off scarey, but the more you get to know him he is really a funny guy. He is tough but you really learn a lot from him. I know learned a lot about myself and the world. Homework is a little hard but you have to do it. I recommend him.
If you make it past the first couple of weeks without peeing yourself in fear, you're good. If you do the work and try not to take him too seriously, you'll be fine. He's really a very nice person and a brilliant teacher. Just stick it out and don't give him a reason to dislike you. You can learn a lot from him, but you have to want to.
At first he comes off extremely intimated almost as if he is joking around, but he's not. Very intense. DO NOT SKIP CLASS. If you talk to him one on one he can be very understanding and very helpful.
Amazingly inspiring professor. An enigma. He is just himself and that is that.
Intense classes, recommended for morning people. He can get carried away on subjects but if you have a good sense of humor, then no worries. Don't let him intimidate you, he's always happy to answer intelligent questions. Pay attention and READ THE SYLLABUS, you will be fine.
Suffolk is lucky to have such an amazing teacher among the generally sub-par education that it offers. A challenging course, at last. A teacher that teaches. Do the work and you'll succeed.
This class was a nightmare! The professor is insufferable. He provides no directions for the writing assignments which leaves students completely in the dark. His rules are ridiculous (if your cell phone goes off, the entire class gets a test). For this particular class, you really need to have a strong background in theater. Take at your own risk!
Easily the best professor in the English department. Super helpful outside of class. Don't waste his time and he won't waste yours. Readings are directly related to the lectures, so make sure you know what was covered. Don't get behind in the reading.
DONT DO IT
Professor Connolly honestly changed my life. He was super passionate and inspiring and it resonates throughout the class. He makes you take things seriously, and though he can be tough, everything he does is for your own benefit. One of the best professors I've had.
once a week easy grader worth the credit
I can write a paper now.
Professor Connolly was probably the best professor that I will have in college. I learned so much from him in just one semester. Always pay attention in class or will be caught off guard. Always willing to answer questions about essays. There is a lot of discussion on the books, but everything relates to an overall theme. Loved his class!
Keeps you awake in class. Very interesting, informational, and you learn a lot of life lessons from him. Classes are HIGHLY unpredictable. You MUST do the reading for class participation. He expects much from you as a student. You CANNOT hogwash your papers. He's a great professor, if you do the work.
Didn't want the class, didn't care, but he made it really interesting.
Takes the class really seriously does you too. Let's you rewrite almost everything.
One of the best professors at Suffolk University. Incredibly smart, inspirational, life changing, and hilarious. Tough grader, BUT WILL ALLOW AS MANY REWRITES AS NEEDED TO GET A GOOD GRADE. His purpose is to make you a better student and a better person, NOT to penalize you for struggling. If you do the work and try hard, he will be a friend to you
He does let you rewrite an he is crazy funny.
Professor Connolly is a great professor. He stresses that the class is a writing class, (not english) so a lot of his grading focuses on the students writing choices, grammar, etc. he's super funny. first day of class he says " do you think judges require page lengths from lawyers? so why do professors require page lengths? it makes no sense"
He expects you to be reading the books in basically all of your free time and moves pretty quickly, so you need to read. But he poses very thoughtful questions and has interesting lectures that kept me very engaged. Go to class and READ and you will do very well
Very charismatic and funny. He is one of the most sarcastic and harsh professors I have ever had so if you don't like being made fun of or your feelings get hurt easily DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. READ if you want to pass and read thoroughly because he will call out random students to answer questions. If you miss class you will have to write an essay.
He tries to scare you to amuse himself. Really not a bad guy. You work in groups the whole time. Communication with your group members about what you like and don't like is key to passing. If you miss class, you screwup your group members and you have to write an essay on why you were out. Maybe think of an easier way to fulfill your CI req.
Professor Connoly is a good, honest person. The man holds the most amazing lectures day-in day-out that can grasp your attention no matter what. He gives really good feedback and expects high expectations out of everyone. An interesting thing he does is that when you make a mistake, he tells the rest of the class to help them out too.
So different from anything else at Suffolk. Experience.
He lets you rewrite and goes over everything on the tests. Kind of crazy, but keeps you awake.
If you go to class and just do the assignments you can rewrite them.
He goes fast but it's actually good because you don't waste time. Also he goes over all the important stuff. All the stuff on the exams you go over completely in class. Good way to get rid of requirement.
Goes over the papers so you can rewrite and actually all of the drafts count for the grade. It is really fair. Its true he's funny.
Only theater class I got anything out of. He TOTALLY out there. But it's a a go all the waay,
if you're just trying to get an easy A, do not take him. I repeat, do NOT take him.
Connoly is definitely an interesting person. If there is something I both love and hate about him, its his brutal honesty. He is not afraid to get stuff off his chest, either being a real life problem or a simple mistake a student made on a paper. A warning... do not make him mad, stay on his good side. Dont use your phone and do all your papers.
