New CHEM 1 professor this year. Shares a lot of his past experiences, sometimes too much. Very approachable outside of class and you should make an effort to talk to him at least once or twice early on in the semester. Lectures were okay. Perfect length and he gives handout for you to write in key information. Very understanding about missing class
Three words: BEST. PROFESSOR. EVER! He was only my lab instructor, but he was amazing! Incredibly patient in going the extra mile to make sure you understand concepts. Funny, easy-going, and always willing to listen, give advice, and encourage you when you're struggling. Tells cool stories about Antarctica, and shares granola bars in his office. :)
Great professor, actually cares about you doing good, encourages outside communication, great enthusiasm, makes material easier to grasp, very understanding and overall just a great professor and person. Best professor Ive ever had
Tommy is wonderful. He did everything possible to accommodate me when I was struggling, he was HILARIOUS, and he loves his job! We asked him for more demonstrations in the feedback form and he started giving one nearly every class, and the creative ideas for them are amazing. He's also near constantly in his office and gives extra credit!
I struggled in chemistry since I started with butte college. I worked with a variety of chem instructors but one that is hands the down favorite is Dr. Cox. He goes out of his way to make sure you understand the curriculum. He applies his past experiences to the lecture. Most importantly he his passionate about chemistry.
Tommy was kind and very personable. Sometimes didn't explain everything super thoroughly. Lots of homework. Overall not a bad professor. Definitely makes you work for it.
Easily my favorite professor at Butte! Approachable, enthusiastic, and truly cares about his students. It's a fast-paced lecture and requires a lot of time outside class to stay on top of homework, but Tommy is pretty good at being available for questions either online or during his office hours. Wish I could have him again next semester!
Great professor.
Great professor! He gives a lot of extra credit opportunities and really makes sure you understand the material! Hes very passionate about his work in ice core chemistry and definitely applies that to the class. He makes you work hard but also gives you the tools to do so. Extremely enthusiastic and entertaining. Hes also very approachable!
One of the best professors I've had. He puts himself in students shoes, prepares you for success and really wants you to be successful in his class. Very good communicator outside of class and extremely open to answer question in lecture/lab. Gives a lot of extra credit opportunities, DO IT! Attend, participate, give effort and you'll succeed!
Great person, very funny and really goes the extra mile for the class. He provides a good number of extra credit opportunities and is very understanding as long as you make honest attempts. He really tries to put you at ease and acknowledge the material can be tough but it can be doable. I wish every teacher could be on the same page as him. A+
TOMMY IS THE BEST. Developed an awesome relationship between him and my classmates, he understands how hard chemistry is and makes sure we get a good grade in the class. Tons of extra credit. Super funny, lots of stories but stays on track. Gives out homemade cookies ;) take him. You won't regret it.
Tommy is one enthusiastic fellow! He is a brilliant guy who is very animated in lecture and lab. He is a pretty tough grader, assigns a lot of homework and there are quizzes every Friday. Luckily, he is wonderful in his office hours, helping students explain concepts they may not get. He is flexible with the class and works very well with students!
Great person and professor, you definitely have to put in work to be successful, one on one help with Tommy was key to my success
Definitely a class that you have to put effort into if you want to succeed but he is a great teacher who is willing to help you as long as you are willing to try. He is very reasonable with extra credit and is extremely interested in the topic. Overall a really nice and approachable teacher who wants people to succeed.
Dr Cox is very lively and has some great stories from his world travels and research. Sometimes he's a bit much, but over all I enjoyed his class. He will take off points for every little detail though, so make sure you pay close attention to all your homework.
If youre here deciding which teacher to take for Chem 1, TAKE COX! Hes amazing! Too many good things to say about it him, teachers like him are what change kids lives. Truly amazing.
I took Dr. Cox's class last semester. He is funny, but often relates it to chem content. He gives lots of homework, but it is usually so so helpful in understanding stuff. I lost steam at the end of the semester sadly, getting me my B. He makes things easy to understand, and often makes it interesting too. I highly recommend him as a professor.
LOVED Dr. Cox. He made chemistry a fun class, and made it relatable for real life. The tests were definitely hard and some of the questions I don't remember ever going over in lecture, but it was okay to figure out. He was great at grading things right away and providing excellent feedback. Thanks Dr. Cox!
Dr Cox is AMAZING. Very straight forward on what to expect for exams via practice quizzes. Uses fill-in the blanks notes for lecture. Gives A LOT of studying resources. REWORK homework problems, practice exams, quiz, & notes multiple times. This makes the exams EASY! If you have questions, ask him. Replies very quickly. Missed 2 labs, so I got a B.
Dr. Cox was a nice guy and had some good jokes, but that was where the positives ended for me. If youd ask him a question, he often wouldnt give you the help you need and instead ask a question back to you that would come off condescending and almost defensive. He also wouldnt explain why you were wrong, but just write incorrect.
I was surprised to see the time & energy that Dr. C put into structuring the class. One thing just builds off the other and is organized in such an intuitive way that everything just falls into place. He also constantly go above and beyond when teaching. Dr. C took over the SI sessions & dropped in on study halls late at night for extra help!
Had Tommy last semester. Homework due everyday, accepts late work tho. Quiz every week but they are practice quizzes with the same questions. Tommys exam review sessions are super helpful & totally worth it. Provides great feedback on assignments, quick grader too. Lecture videos are interesting, makes stuff relevant to current events. Thx Tommy!
Dr. Cox replaced our teacher in April. On our final he gave me a zero on multiple problems for " incorrect assumptions"; however, my methods matched that of the previous teacher/assignments. I argued that it wasn't fair to mark down what our previous teacher accepted. This man reviewed my work FROM THE PREVIOUS prof n dropped my grade by 6%.. lol
Dr. Cox is extremely helpful & provides all the resources a student needs to succeed in class. I'm not gonna lie, keeping up with stuff has been my only difficulty with this class, although it doesnt affect my learning but there is a lot to keep up with is all. Dr. Cox goes out of his way to remind his students to work on certain assignments too
Dr. Cox is a great professor to take for Chem 1! He is very engaged in his lectures and is quite passionate about teaching chemistry. If you ever need to get ahold of him, he responds to emails very quickly. There is quite a bit of homework, but if you stay on top of it, it's really not too bad.
Dr. Cox practically works himself to the bone to make sure his students succeed. Deeply caring, supportive, and encouraging. Goes above and beyond to accommodate DSPS students and make them feel respected/valued which is nearly impossible to come by at Butte. Very reassuring, responsive, connects with his students, makes class fun and interesting.
One of the coolest guys youll ever meet. Take the time to read the book and take good notes for the homework assignments and go to every test review session he offers.
He is nice and funny and obviously passionate about chem. The class structure is a bit messy for my liking. Also, he can be kind of rude/condescending when someone asks a question. If I would have applied myself I would have gotten an A. Just keep up with the work, little points here and there add up.
Has good lectures and fair testing practices. Could be a little unclear with his grading at some points, and some of the assignments didn't feel very meaningful or helpful. Seemed like a pretty good chemistry teacher though, with lots of opportunities to learn the material in different ways.
Chemistry is a lot of work, but Dr. Cox responds to emails pretty fast. He's really helpful in lab. Definitely go to the practice exams - youll see a lot of same things on the real exam
Lots of homework but Tommy posts solutions to the homework on Canvas. Quizzes every week but there are practice quizzes. Tommy gives lots of helpful stuff & SI sessions are super helpful too. There are practice exams that help you get ready for real exam. Like, a lot to do for this class but Tommy gives you tons of help and wants you to do well
Great teacher, but can sometimes be tone-deaf and rude if you try to converse with him. He brings up relevant topics in relation to Chem. that makes it easy/fun to learn. He is also quite passionate about chemistry. If you show him you are serious about your education/Chemistry, he will help you out in any way he can. Again, he can be unpleasant...
Tommy gave us this massive study guide but it had all the questions that were on the final exam. And we did a lot of the study guide questions and problems together during class or the answers are in the lecture videos. Hes pretty lax and understanding on on late work. All around a fairly straight forward class but he does want you to learn
Professor Cox girlfriend makes the best cupcaakes and he brought the cupcakes when we had our final exam.
Dr. Cox was a great pro, but he wasn't always fair in his grading. Tests were difficult; you will need his assistance and SI; don't miss labs and stay at the top to comprehend stuff thoroughly.
Good professor, wants you to learn and is very organized with the class structure. Tests are easy as long as you do the practice exams. Will work with you on late work or if you need extra help. Put in the work and you'll get a good grade.
Dr Cox is the best teacher in a STEM subject Ive ever had! I understand the "why" in chemistry like never before. He's enthusiastic & respectful! He wants to share his love & understanding of the subject with you! He keeps the learning environment light & funny. I look forward to going to this class even though I have never liked chem before
Best teacher I've ever had! Dr. Cox was very attentive and understanding with all of his students. He made me excited to go to chemistry class!
This class can be tough. Do all your homework, ask questions, attend all labs and study, you will do fine! Dr. Cox would always respond to emails very quickly. He would stay after class to answer all and any questions you had. Great teacher, very patient, caring&is clear with what he expects from you! I would definitely take another class with him!
Dr. Cox was an amazing teacher. He goes the extra mile to help his students succeed. There is homework every day and a quiz every week. He has three exams, but offers extra credit after each. There are also study guides for all tests. Hes always available for office hours or by email. I definitely recommend him. Plus, he brings in treats!
I'm not gonna lie chemistry is just hard but Cox made class more enjoyable. He brought in cookies his gf made, he went over problems that we missed to help me understand better, he even let us take some tests together as a class. And he said to help us for the final test he gave the class practice exam and a study guide which both super helpful.
Quizzes every week and homework due everyday & you can redo the homework for full credit. Really understanding teacher but also really wants you to learn the stuff. Textbook is awful but Tommy is great at explaining things and helping you figure it out. Like chem just takes a ton of practice but Tommy sets his class up so you get lots of practice
I didn't pass the class (life stuff) but Dr. Cox was really nice and super supportiing. I'm gonna try and take his class again in the fall
We have a short quiz everyday in class and you can't use your notes or phone or anything on the quizzes but tommy gives you a practice test so kinda get an idea what to study for each week and he makes videos that go over the answers to practice test and like walks you thru each practice problem. super helpful
Cox wrote me a glowing letter of recommendation for medical school. I took his class 5 years ago and he still remembered me & how hard I worked in chem class. Take Dr. Cox, he will push you to try hard but also help you when you need it. Great teacher, my favorate even after graduating from UCLA. Still best teacher I've ever had
Chem 51 is a tough class, if you have to take it, take it with Tommy. He wants all of his students to do well, and it shows. Two quizzes a week and one final at the end. For quizzes he gives you a practice quiz, so you know what to focus on. Homework is from the book on paper instead of a computer program. 10 out of 10 recommend him!
I have dropped every chemistry class till this point, but Tommy was able to help me understand so much better and was so patient w/ us. He is probably my favorite professor that I have had while at butte. PAY attention and take GOOD notes on lectures and form a study group. Do EVERY assignment, don't miss class and your golden. Highly Recommend.
Tommy was the best science prof I've ever had. He made chem so real world relatable & is so patient. He would sit down with me in lab and explain a concept to me over & over again in diff ways until I understood it. And tons of extra credit! On the final exam exam we all wore lab coats so he gave us the answer to the EC question :) So easy going
I love Dr.Cox. Such a great teacher, he is very passionate about chemistry and good at teaching. Always accessible outside of class and willing to help. He brings cookies! Gives out practice exams and some extra credit. Best chemistry teacher at Butte.
I took Dr. Cox for Chem years ago during lockdown & fully online. Dr. Cox organized the class very well and still remembered me - he wrote me a glowing letter of recommendation for Med school. He is such an incredible teacher and great person. If your going to take Chem 1, take it w/ Dr. Cox! He'll continue to help you long after the class is over
It's hard to put into words how great of a professor Dr. Cox was. He's caring and very passionate about Chemistry. Very approachable and a great person outside of class. He never leaves a student behind, especially when they struggle in his class (which will be rare I promise you). Overall, great professor and would definitely take again.
There is a LOT to do in this class but Tommy is super understanding and really wants you to do well. There are quizzes every week and homework due every day. The lecture videos are helpfull in making sense of what we do in the chem lab. He even having a extra study session to help us prepare for the final exam. I wish my BIO teacher would do same
I cannot begin to express my gratitude for all the help that Dr. C gave me this semester. Some teachers take approach that its easy for them so it must be easy don't particularly care if you struggle. But not Dr. Cox ,not in slightest. He takes time to teach & to listen and break it all down no matter what and always does it with care and patience
Mr. Cox is a very caring, passionate teacher. He enjoys joking and will go out of his way to offer help if you are struggling. He responds to emails quickly and always provides feedback on an assignments. The class is challenging but if you keep up on the lectures, homework, and labs you will do well. I highly recommend him!
Lectures and quizzes are challenging to understand if you lack a good foundation in Chem1. Super responsive to emails and questions. Offered extra credit on some quizzes and exams. At times can come off as somewhat condescending but overall is a caring teacher invested in student success. Keep up with homework and labs to check your understanding!
CHEM 2 moves a lot faster than chem1 and the class is just hard. But Tommy makes the class enjoyable, gives extra credit after every exam even the final exam. he even let us work on final exam together. Go to the practice exams, do all the homework and you'll be fine in this class
Professor Cox is an engaging and intelligent lecturer. While he knows how to engage the class as a whole to the material he fails to connect one on one. When asking questions to further clarify no direct answer just a work around to try to get you to figure it out. Seems like he already knows what to tell you before you even finish the question.
Tommy is by far the most understanding teacher I have ever had. Without saying too much, I've had a lot of medical issues come up and Tommy has been working with me every step of the way on late assignments and helping me catch up. He responds to emails pretty quickly and really wants you to do well as long as you are trying
Comes off as condescending. Doesn't provide helpful answers, just works around the question. Grading criteria is extremely inconsistent. Responds to emails fast though. You are confused for 13 weeks straight in his class, even if you are good at chemistry. Sometimes he expects you to know something he went over in 15 min. Lots of E.C opportunities.
I had Chem with Cox years ago and its was one of the hardest classes I ever took at butte, but he was an awesome prof and I really appreciate how he pushed me to do well. Dr. Cox has a lot passion for teaching, which was incredibly memorable. of all the teachers I've ever had, he stands out. Take chem with Cox, you won't regret it!
honestly, I was nervous about taking Chem but now at the end of semester, I'm kinda going to miss class with Tommy. He made the class really enjoyable and made a lot of friends in the class. Online lecture videos with notes that you follow along with - no grade for videos. Lab twice a week, don't miss lab. Tommy always makes chem relateable
Professor is very helpful. He offers extra credit. No tests only 2 quizzes each week and a final exam. Also 2 homework assignments each week. His lectures are great.
Difficult class, but he gives you a lot of support and extra credit opportunities. He preps you very well for the tests and lectures are great. That said, the final is pretty vast. Lab practical, final lab experiment, 70 question multiple choice exam, and a long answer test which are all separate finals in this class.
Chem 2 with Dr. Cox is alot at first. 3 exams and 2 part final exam. Labs every week & homewrok due every week but Dr. Cox gives you the solutions to the homework and he goes over the prelabs with you during lab. The lab solutions stuff is pretty hard to get through but Dr. Cox was always willing to sit down and walk you thru his thought process
Tough and inconsistent grader. Most certainly could benefit from a "blind" grading system that I know has become commonplace among other professors. Made several conceptual mistakes throughout the semester where he had to amend his previous explanation during the next lecture. Also assigned WAY more busy work than the other Chemistry professors.
Great prof. Puts notes from class on canvas. Definitely go to practice exams! Those were really helpful, he even goes over test taking with you. If you gotta take chem 1, take it with cox
I toik chem 112 at chico state and Dr. Cox is so much better. I had to work my tail off but Dr. Cox really made us think about how nuclear energy and batteries our affecting our daily lives and our future. He is very helpful, had him in both lecture and lab. He has great practice exam sessions on his own time and very supporting outside of class
There are a lot of assignments and paperwork in CHEM 1 but I guess thats true for every CHEM class. Dr. Cox provides really helpful feedback on assignments and will go over the answers & explanations with you. He is really good at making Chemistry related to the real world. There are 3 exams and a final exam and he tell you what is on each exam
Dr. Cox truly wants you to succeed, not just in chem but also be successful after you finish his class. There are 3 exams and a 2-part final exam. Tommy holds a special practice exam session at Chico Center before each exam for more testing practice. I've never met a science instructor that was so caring and supportive. Seriously, take Chem w/ Cox.
Dr. Cox was an amazing professor who truly cared about our success. The class had a lot of work, but staying focused in lab made it manageable. Homework was due twice a week, with weekly quizzes, and practice exams prepared us for the tests. If I had to take another Chemistry class, I'd choose him!
3 exams inn this class and then 2 finals exams but he let us take one of the final exams toghether as a class. that was so much fun. Really try nott to miss the labs cuase if I would not hve missed so many labs I would have a A in this class. and Tommy is realy nice and friendly and makes class fun most of the time but some days are boring
3 exams and a final exam in this class with labs twice a week. Honestly this class is a TON of work but Tommy is very patient & understanding. You can use the final exam to replace lowest exam. Go to practice exams, Tommy straight up tells you what is on the exam!
CHEM2 is way difficult than CHEM1, way more math. I had never used quadratic before this class. Dr. Cox helped me so much with the math and like everything else. I knoew for a fact that I wouldnt hav passed this class if it weren't for Dr. C. Great lectures, he prints out class notepackets for you, so nice. I really cant recommend Dr Cox enough.
great lecturer not so great person. needs blind grading implemented.
lots of extra credit opportunity. wouldn't take him again though just too immature and disruptive . seen him arguing with multiple students and take them outside. it was weird I didn't like it. He always seemed to be in a bad/ passive agressive mood and talked about literally everyone negatively behind their backs. dont reccomend
He can go on small tangents in class but he mostly stays on topic. Regularly goes over pre-labs with the class & exam questions are all from past assignments or practice quizzes. Dr. Cox is very helpful & clear in emails. Super helpful & fun to chat with in office hours. Do the practice quizzes and the practice exams, email him questions & ur good
very accessible outside of class, he responds to emails pretty quickly and he is first prof I've had that like thanked me for asking questions and emailing him. he provides multiple examples and lots of practice problems but he does want you to learn. tons of extra credit and he makes pretty good videos to help explain the process of solving things
The professor means well and provides tools to succeed, but his passive-aggressive behavior, overwhelming workload, and 6-8 homework assignments weekly make the class difficult. He doesn't consider students' jobs or other classes. While he wants success for his students, a more manageable workload would greatly improve the experience.
makes too many mistakes
Great teacher, very down to earth. Quizzes every week but he lets you work with classmates. Provides tons of practice and guidance for exams. Very good at making things relatable and real world. I'm bummed I didn't have Dr. Cox for chem 1 and only had him for chem 2. He makes it a really fun class and fun to learn. For sheezy
Dr. Cox will literally tell you wats on each and every exam and will then shouw you how to do that problem- but then he wants to see you be able to do the problem on your own on the exam. Lots of practice and he told us beforehand how he snacks a lot during grading so he isn't hangry & grades nice. Some labs you do on own but others lab partner
Chem 2 with Dr. Cox starts out fast & furious with challenging material (like ICE tables and IRE tables) but then Dr. Cox lets off the pedal in about week 10 or so and told the class that the last few weeks of the semester is more discussion based (pros & cons of nuclear energy vs fossil fuels) - which was great to balance my other classes, thanks!
superful helpful in chem lab. really patient when you kinda ask the same question like 5 times in a row lol and he makes everything related to what hapens outside of school which is fire. Take Cox, super good guy
just horrible
This class is so well organized. Gives you study guides for exams and the questions on the exam come directly from the study guide word for word. Same with final exam, Dr. Cox gave everyone a study guide and works through the questions with you and tells you which mistakes not to make. He is all about learning but also pretty lenient too
Dr. Cox runs a tight ship - labs and activities twice a week and a weekly quiz too. Finals Week is absolutely crazy with 2 final exams, a lab exam and a lab project. But this is the only class Ive ever had where we were allowed to work on the final exam as a class. Like its really challenging but Dr. C lets the class work together-much less stress!
Tommy was a great professor, & decent human being. He's fun, shows so much enthusiasm with the subject. I'm DSPS student, & had trouble w/ exam scheduling. I updated Dr. Cox, about it, and expected to take it with the class. This man (on his own time) walked to DSPS, & fixed it. Tommy did. That's who you're dealing with.
Tommy is very approachable and definitely very undertstanding of life circumstances. I missed a ton of labs and wouldn't pass Chem 1 but he met me outside of class and helped me make up most of hthe labs i missed so i could get a passing grade and not have to re take Chem 1. If you have to take chemistry take it with Tommy, he want you to pass
I went into chem 2 woefully underprepared, due to not having the best chem 1 teacher. But Tommy had weekly meetings with me to bring me up to speed on what i didn't know from chem 1 that I needed to know for chem 2. Chemistry is difficult for anyone and when I felt overwhelmed, tommy calmed me down on more than one occasion. For chem take tommy
If you miss class he posts the notes onto canvas. 3 exams and final exam. Quizzes every week. He drops lowest quiz, lowest two labs and you can use final exam to replace lowest exam. Really an overall good teacher that cares and wants you to do well
Tommy is an absolutely amazing professor, especially in lab. He encourages you to think & consider what could go wrong during the experiment before you do the experiment. He's very encouraging and also brings up test taking strategies and how to get better at tests. He wants you to do well in your career, but you have to go to class lol
great teacher, really fun. Drops your lowest quiz and lab scores at the end of the semester and your final exam replaces your lowest exam grade. this bumps up your grade at the end and he lets you take final exam as a class
great prof and really good guy. we still keep in touch and he is helpinng me figure out this hwole transfer thing to chico state on his own time. he really cares
I had Thomas Cox Spring of 24. One thing I absolutely loved about him was the fact that he made his online lectures mandatory and a part of your grade. I tend to slack when it comes to online lectures, but making it a part of my grade pushed me to do great in the class. I would really recommend him!
Dr. Cox is an awesome guy. He is one of the nicest professors that I've ever had and has gone further than anyone to make sure his students succeed. He creates his own notes for students to follow along with during the lectures that include examples of all the concepts taught. He is a fair grader and a good lecturer. I highly recommend him.
I had Dr. Cox for Chem 2 in Spring 2025. He gives weekly quiz that you can use notes on. And the same quiz questions end up on the exams. Labs can be confusing but Dr. Cox does a walk thru of each lab & goes over lab report with the class, even answers some questions as a class. Dr. Cox is great prof, very encouraging & all about scientific method
