Thomas is a new professor, he is a little rough around the edges. I enjoyed his lectures despite my disdain for politics. He is a military man who displays strong advocacy for the military, military members, and the intelligence community. This class is 100% by the book so do the reading!
Class is based off of the three tests you'll take the entire semester, and pop quizzes are online. He reads presentations based off of the textbook readings, but he doesn't post them online so you will need to ask someone if you don't read the textbook. Allows a cheat sheet, and the good part is that he sticks to his syllabus.
Professor Crowell is a great professor if you're going to read outside of class. Only 3 tests and 3 pop quizzes for the whole semester. A cheat sheet can be used for each exam which is nice. Extra credit at the end gives up to 5 points on your semester grade. Overall, Crowell is a pretty laid back professor.
This professor is a good professor. My suggestion is to read the chapter before showing up and then the lecture will just be a little refresher. There is NO homework, but there is pop quizzes that are super easy if you read. I never missed even one question on them. I missed an entire weeks worth of class & he helped me catch up. Very nice man!
Took online. 5 exams (20% each) and thats all we had. He posts lectures every week and theyre about an hour long each. The exams werent too bad.
Literally 5 exams the whole semester. Lectures about 50min-1hr. Pretty long lectures but worth listening to. Can speed up the voice speed if your in a rush. Need book and lectures. SI sessions available. Awesome Professor! Coolest life as Secret Intelligence officer. Loved him. Email him. He loves students. I don't regret taking him one bit.
This class wasn't awful. We just had 6 tests. There's no extra credit or any other type of assignments. Honestly, if you just watch his lecture videos you'll be fine. The textbook is recommended, but I didn't use it, and I did okay.
For Professor Crowell's class, there are 2 lectures weekly with 6 exams. The lectures are long but they cover all of the material so it balances it out. He's super easy to get in touch with and a super cool guy. He's an amazing teacher 10/10.
There are only 6 tests for the entire semester, so if you miss even one then don't expect to get a good grade. There's no retakes and there's no way of knowing when the test is if you just go by blackboard. I missed 2 tests and had to withdraw because there was no way of making it up. If you're forgetful then taking a class like this isn't for you.
Funny, interesting, and cool lectures; lecture slides are not included and details are hidden in some questions. Reading textbooks and such is required, but you can mess around like me and still pass. No graded homework, only studying, 3 random pop quizzes, and 5 non-cumulative exams. Was lenient and spared notes and missed exam extensions.
It is a 90% test grading and 10% pop quizzes, be aware of this tough grading. Cool guy but maybe this class is not for me, I can't find any information in lectures for the test questions, I do go to class in-person and listen to him carefully. Be aware of no extra-credits, no make-up work, if you fail the tests, you fail this course!
Professor Crowell is a great lecturer but the content can be difficult. The class is 90% based on the tests and 10% on pop quizzes, so be careful. Attendance is not mandatory but if he gives a pop quiz when you are not there, you will not get the points. There is a lot of material to read but it is not difficult with some time management.
The professor loves talking with students and opening the floor to class discussion on current issues. His lectures are pretty straightforward although he does not record them and does not post notes. Your only resource outside of class is the textbook. There is no homework, and the grades are based off the exams + 2 random pop quizzes.
Crowell is intelligent and knows what he's talking about. Some friends don't enjoy his class because its lecture heavy and the only grades are 6 tests, but get a study buddy and go over the textbook in the JPL before each test. You'll be just fine. He threatened 3 pop quizzes throughout the semester but we never had them. Just go to class lol.
Professor Crowell is truly underrated, and will really get you involved in politics even if you have no interest. His lectures are god-tier, and his experience in the military provides a unique perspective that isn't shared with other professors. He dedicates class time to political discussion, and is always open for a further dialogue. Take him.
This professor was amazing. He was a great lecturer and the tests weren't hard. I will say I don't like how he refuses to use the +/- scale. I ended up with a grade that should be a B+ which is more gpa points than a B but I got a B anyways. Kind of disappointing because I ended up being .01 gpa points shy of getting into the program I wanted to.
Pay attention to the lectures, you miss a lecture and you probably already missed a couple of questions on the exam. Study for the tests because questions can be tricky. It's a good class though and he is pretty good at giving his lectures.
Good lectures and content. Only issue was that the quizzes weren't 100% from the textbook or lectures, they're "concepts" that had to be interpreted which I found absurd. Very lax professor, but I would not take this class again because it is exam heavy and the material studied most likely wasn't on the exam making this class hard for no reason.
Prof Crowell is a great professor, if you go to class and read the textbook you should be fine. He allows cheat sheets for tests, those help a bunch. He's a really cool person who cares for his students. If you get to know him, he has interesting stories. But class is important because some answers on tests come from lectures.
His lectures are always entertaining, always manages to tie in current events with the concepts that we are learning. I recommend taking his class it is simple. Show up to class listen to his lectures and take the tests. The tests are always multiple choice and his teaching is very effective.
Professor Crowell's course relies on his lectures and a few tests throughout the semester. He'll lecture through certain chapters and then get tested on them the following week. The tests can be a little tricky due to the questions being almost combinations from his lectures to the book.
The only grades in this course are exams. You cannot retake an exam or receive extra credit if you bomb one. No exam grades are dropped. You can do well on them by attending the lectures and studying the material on his slides/textbook. His lectures were good and contained current events to engage students.
only based on tests and sometimes test questions seem a little abstract. questions are more based on concepts.
Prof Crowell is a great lecturer. I always found myself engaged and interested in his lectures. He always manages to tie in current events with each topic while also remaining neutral. The whole class is based on tests, but if you attend every lecture and make your half-page cheat sheet that he allows they aren't too difficult.
Prof. Crowell's class is hard at first but you just need to adjust to his teaching style!! Graded only by six exams which could be good or could be bad depending on the scores!! He knows what he's teaching but at times things may get confusing!! You have to study a lot outside of class to do good but he also allows cheat sheets so that's helpful!!!
Professor Crowell is amazing. Your grade comes from six tests and the final isn't cumulative. The test questions mainly come from the lectures but some come from the textbook, and he allows cheat sheets. The class is very entertaining as he likes to have class discussions about current events and make sure everyone has their voice heard.
Although this course was only graded by 6 tests, they were all fairly easy and had material straight out of the textbook and lectures. His lectures are pretty interesting and I would recommend going to class to do well on the test.
Loved this class! I never read the book so I missed a couple of questions but just by going to the lecture and taking notes got B's and A's on the exams. A lot of people get scared of only exams being the whole grade but I honestly prefer that over hw. The lecture is not mandatory and I never missed class!
A great professor for a class that's required! Getting the textbook helps but you don't necessarily need it to pass. His lectures are long but are essential to doing good on the exams. The class is only exams grades with no extra credit. Love Mr. Crowell!
Only tests for this class. Go to his lectures because just listening will secure you a B. Reading the book will almost guarantee you an A. Tests aren't hard if you just pay attention and he allows a cheat sheet. Does random questions from the lecture that may not be subject oriented.
No homework, only exams. Exams are extremely easy for anyone with a basic grasp of how their government operates. Thomas will curve the exams as needed based on the class average. Don't buy the textbook, didn't need it. Just study the lectures he posts online.
Only grades by tests, but if you take the practice tests in the online textbooks you're set. The lectures are posted after class but its important to go to class cause he will tell you what to focus on when studying and sometimes the chapters for the tests get swapped so you're not gonna want to miss info like that.
Great professor. Only grades by exams. Exams aren't bad but some questions are lowkey unfair
I don't even like politics and I was not looking forward to this class but this guy is extremely engaging and creates a great class environment. One of my favorite classes this semester.
really engaging professor, if you read the book the exams are easy
Hes pretty chill and likes politics a lot
He is a very fair professor and available to students. He always had lines of students waiting to ask for advice, questions, get his opinions after class. He is patient and flexible. He is a great public speaker and an interesting person. I loved his class and would take him again.
His lectures can be a bit boring sometimes but his lectures are straightforward and help on test. He is very knowledgeable and can be fun to learn from. While the test are not hard if you do not pay attention and take notes during the lecture you will be very lost.
you are only graded on 6 test, no homework, participation or extra credit given. for the test he does let you have half a paper with notes. attendance is also not mandatory.
He is a pretty cool Professor. Lectures can be long & somewhat boring but it's politics. Beginning of lecture talks about current events. Only graded on 6 tests & allows half a cheat sheet. There is a book but you aren't graded on it. Best to read the chapter before the lecture and then listen during the lecture.
Amazing professor try and pick him, You can tell that he actually cares about what he does
Professor Crowell is really nice. His lectures can get pretty boring! He posts the slideshows after class every day so I recommend just listening to him because he talks fast. There is no homework or projects just 6 exams, one every 2 weeks! They are "proctored" In person but online. He also allows cheat sheets on all exams! No final!
Professor is very nice, attendance is not mandatory but it was nice to go in person. The only con to this class is that it is graded by only 6 exams BUT you are allowed a half sheet cheat sheet front and back for each exam (which you can fit entire notes on if you try). Overall didn't get a single test grade below an 88 and enjoyed the class!
really great professor! his quizzes are easy and he allows a half-paper cheat sheet for every single one--also, no final! although there are only 6 quizzes, its not hard to pass or get a good grade. just skim if you have no time to read, or, if really necessary, dont read at all and just use his slideshows.. lol. but hes great, would take again :)
Outstanding professor. I'm not a poly-sci major but I genuinely enjoyed going to his class. Grade consists of six tests all weighed equally and allows a 'cheat-sheet.' Attendance isn't graded but there are lecture-specific questions that can appear. Textbook is said to be required but you can do just as well without it. Would take him again.
Only grades are the 6 exams and he drops the lowest grade. Don't really need the text book if you go to class, take notes, and study the slides you'll be good. ur also allowed a half page cheat sheet which you can type. Pay attention during lecture because the test are lecture heavy. Absolutely enjoyed this class and would recommend for anyone.
Amazing choice for a core class, he's nice & funny! I took him for intro to American politics and it's an easy class IF YOU STUDY FOR THE TESTS. Put time and effort into studying and you'll succeed. You'll be graded by 6 exams (cheat sheet) (no final) each weighed 20% so focus on the exams! no attendance is taken but just go to class lol it helps.
He doesn't really teach, just lectures. you are expected to read the book to pass the exams. His lectures are like listening to Fox News as this individual is hard right wing.He has little dog whistles throughout his lectures that continue to call out the left while he will admittedly defend the right. Just read the book, you don't really need him
Awful awful awful, just awful. Nothing he talks about is on the test. The tests are the only thing he grades too. So like others have said, you can skip all these classes and just read the book and still get the same grade! Do better UTSA!!
I hate his tests. We are all treated like cheaters until proven otherwise. Such a pretentious man…
Super biased!!!!! No one cares how great you think the Republican Party is!!!! Start teaching and stop talking!!!!!
Doesn't teach you anything. Read the book. Take his tests which he sprinkles little tidbits about himself in. Why is one of my test questions about you working in the White House?
UTSA has great professors. He's not one. Will treat you like a cheater on test days. Might as well be taking these tests in Russia!
If I could give a poorer rating I would. He thinks all POC that are deported deserve so. He's a hateful man. If you see good ratings and wonder why I'll tell you- half the class is MAGA. the rest of us aren't. As a result we don't participate. He thinks we're just shy. Guess???
I wish he would post the slides post class for ease of studying.
The good thing is that don't need to attend any lectures. All the tests are based on the text book. Half the class literally only shows up on test days.
Pretty easy class
Tests are the basis for grading; 6 tests for 6 grades total. He will also drop your lowest grade too which is nice. Just don't mention Palestine or Ukraine in his class or he will begin to rant lol
Test days are crazy! I almost put on my orange jumpsuit! He will employ other students at the door, there's cameras, and a code to take the test. The tests themselves are taken from lecture materials. Make sure to take notes as slides will not be posted after class. I think this is to ensure people attend his class
Unfortunately I tried several times to meet with him during office hours but he was never available. Very unresponsive to emails. After class, though, he is always available for questions, a quick chat or if you need clarification.
I wish the class was more objective instead of leaning to one side politically. Other than that, decent class. 6 tests, no other coursework.
Never set foot in his class and still passed.
Biased right wing propagandist. I said what I said.
No need to attend the lectures, it's all MAGA rhetoric. Just read the book and you'll fine. Also don't cheat during testing or you'll end up in El Salvador apparently
You either love him or hate him. Very knowledgeable but also very conservative. Makes most of the class feel uneasy when he starts ranting about his buddies in the red hats.
Just tests. No work= no learning. Just how I feel.
Why is my supposedly educated professor confused about simple things like due process?? We had a discussion in class and he said all migrants are getting all the due process they deserve. So yeah… great school experience so far.
Had a family emergency and he refused to let me make up a test. Wouldn't be so bad but he had no assignments so one missed or bombed test will tank your average
Definitely doesn't allow any make up for tests. I was in the ER the night before. I was discharged at 6pm but obviously still didn't feel well. My doctor note had the day before (when I was in the ER) so he didn't accept it and I got a 0 :(
It's easier to just skip the classes and read the book. He doesn't really teach, more so just rambles about conservative politics. Easy enough class though
His testing policies are a little too strict but he says they are necessary to prevent cheating which is a shame. Other than that he says some things that may be perceived as a bit too much. He doesn't outright say it, but he definitely supports removal of DEI.
I wish I knew he was going to be preaching right wing agendas the whole time so I could have picked a different class
I would not recommend him to anyone. He is extremely biased in his lectures towards Trump and is states he is more than ok with everything he is doing. In our Textbook, it will give several examples on various topics. In his lectures, he will replace those examples with ones that make the left look like they are destroying this country.
Just not a good teacher honestly
Half the class is talking about what's going on in the news. Lots of right winger commentary. Will discredit anyone who disagrees with his views outright. Makes it so no one wants to participate in lectures. Have your beliefs sure; but allow others to have theirs too
Test days are a nightmare in his classrooms. No late exam make ups no matter what. Had a family emergency and he told me I should have planned better? Sorry I can't control when my grandma dies…
Lot of hate for his politics but don't be a snowflake and you'll do fine!
I didn't notice anything like that when I took his class. He does go through the slides very quickly though. Which is fine but I wish he would post the slides after each class would definitely help bring up the class average as a whole IMO.
We never reference the textbook but it's somehow mandatory (and very expensive). And because it comes with some software you can't buy it used or sell it back at the bookstore at UTSA.
I wish we would do test reviews after the exams as many of us are still wondering why we scored so low. A group of us attends the study sessions but with his lectures and book not being cohesively taught it can be confusing at times.
No assignments just tests which is actually nice. He assigns a student to create a cheat sheet for the class to use so we all pass. The cheat sheet is usually spot on with tests so it's basically impossible to fail.
If you are a right winger you'll love his class. He doesn't use the term liberal, rather “progressive”. So if you meet that criteria, you'll spend all class trying to keep your sanity. So if you're a progressive student, you will feel ousted in his classroom.
According to the good professor: - The internet illegally censored Trump. - Jan 6 was a protest or a riot depending on party affiliation. - He trusts all Trump appointees except the (formerly) democrat ones. - Trump is a master of negotiations with regards to tariffs. - Israel is defending itself the same way we do with terrorists. (Much more)
He takes test days pretty serious is all I will say.
Easy class if you put in the effort.
class was pretty easy, not too much work outside of class. half sheet allowed on each exam. attendance wasnt mandatory but im not sure how ppl pass without going. there might be a textbook but i didnt buy it
The class is super easy. I would look at the slides right before the test and got nothing below an 85. He will say some things in class that will be on the test but not on the slides so you should attend but don't have to. Also I don't know why everyone is tweaking about his views but he isn't as severe as everyone says. take him for easy grade.
His class is very straightforward and not that challenging if you put in the smallest amount of effort. Tests unbiased and mainly just memorization of key ideas. He can be funny with cool experience; debates fair/open/reasonable. You'd think from these comments he was the devil for not outright bashing everything Trump. He worked for Bill Clinton..
Can't respect someone who is ok with everything going on in today's world. He's seriously ok with babies being deported. I'm sorry; that is just not right
This class is a waste of time. Lecture will be delayed for up to 45 minutes because he insists on leaving the floor open for students at the beginning of class to “talk about current politics”, which means he'll debate and argue with whoever raises their hand until he feels he's won. It's pathetic, unprofessional, and wastes valuable class time.
The awful reviews this professor gets are NOT fair at all. He is really straight forward during class and grading scheme. You can use his slides and still get a good grade on tests. Also he is nice and the "talk politics" before class lasts 15-20 minutes not more.
It's just so ridiculous that he will literally talk down non-conservative politics as the way it's suppose to be. “Progressives types” are treating the right extremely unfair, everything MAGA is doing is “super legal” (actual quote), and all of Palestine and its people are terrorists because our government “said so”. I just wish he wasn't so biased
The class itself is easy. While the other comments are exaggerated, he is clearly right-leaning in his politics. There are times where he seems to be quite skeptical of typical liberal talking points, but almost always says he'll “play devil's advocate” for right-leaning ones. But he's a nice guy who clearly means well, and is an alright professor.
About 5 tests and basically a deconstructed essay at the end. Not hard at all and the lectures weren't that boring. He had a bit of a conservative bias but it wasn't crazy. Nice guy and was very knowledgeable due to his past career. Great and easy for an upper level course
He is too right leaning for me. I'm sorry. You're not always right just because it's your class. It's OUR CLASS sir. Also he sounds like Bob Belcher from Bob's Burgers lol
Did not enjoy this class. He seems nice but is a very misguided individual with regards to politics. It seems like he is not here to tech, rather to try and shape young minds to think and see the issues in the ways in which he does. In other words, his lectures, lessons and demeanor are not objective. Just beware but easy enough class.
I love that we didn't need to use our textbooks (especially since I didn't purchase one), but it would help tremendously if the slides used in class were posted after class within 48 hours. Easy tests though so that's a plus.
I was scared to take this class after seeing his reviews, but ended up looking forward to attending this class. Tom is very funny & had good class discussions that kept me engaged, especially when referring to his own personal experiences. idk why he has so many bad reviews as he always kept a neutral stance when listening to students opinions.
Not a bad professor he teaches very well and his course isn't confusing at all I just wish he wasn't so opinionated.
Not for me. Especially in the current political climate.
Wish I wouldn't have wasted money on the textbook (which UTSA will not buy back). Not a bad class though
hes overall a good professor, just shares a lot of his opinions which is not bad just gets annoying because there's always an argument before class starts, and we never even used the textbook
Literally one of the easiest classes , attendance isn't taken , as well as all lecture notes provided , the class has no homework only 6 test , also cheat sheets are allowed on test! would deff recommend
attendence is not taken but literally all you have to do is attend class to pass. you can be ~20 mins late since he talks about current events at the beginning of class, which I enjoy although some people may not. critiques both sides and doesn't show bias. communicates with class a lot and wants to hear our thoughts on things. really nice
Awesome teacher and his lectures are enjoyable. Attendance isnt mandatory but it is reccomended you show up to class anyways. Only has 6 exams to grade on but you are allowed a cheat sheet for them.
Professor Crowell was a very nice guy, and had no bias. The 30 minute talk at the start of class was helpful for me, because sometimes i learned new stuff. Your whole grade is 6 tests with a cheat sheet allowed, and although attendence not mandatory in class conversations will be on the test. I didnt need a textbook at all.
10/10 professor!! His attendance isn't mandatory, but his exams include bits of the lecture, so if you didn't attend the lecture, most likely you won't pass the exam. However, you are allowed a cheat sheet (half sheet front and back). I really enjoyed the topics we learned about and it opened my eyes to the things going on around the world.
As you may have seen in other reviews, he does tend to be slightly biased towards the right, but he is always open to discussion with students and is respectful towards other viewpoints. The class itself is very easy as long as you pay attention to the lectures. Grade is based on 6 tests but he allows a half page cheat sheet for each one.
He's an alright professor, doesn't require attendance, but he wants you to go to his lectures and will put questions on the exams that are only in the lectures. He mandated honor lock to discourage cheating. He only grades 6 exams, nothing else is graded. Test material is not difficult. The textbook isn't necessary to read.
Really chill class, six non-cumulative exams determine your whole grade. If you already know a good deal about US government from APUSH and/or AP Government you should be good to go. However, he does sometimes tell personal anecdotes (usually relevant to the content) during lectures and often tests you on them in exams, so watch out for those.
Honestly he was a rant professor, includes a lot of examples. And one of those lectures where I genuinely enjoyed going to, as you have read from other people ooh he is bias..whatever go cry. Probably the least enjoyable people in the class were the students, sorry not sorry.
