Doesn't give partial credit
Pros -Chill -Helpful and passionate-esp. during labs Cons -Tests are really hard -HW too long -Don't do reviews before tests -Harsh grader on labstests He is a great teacher but it is NOT easy to get an A. It's chemistry.
Obviously chem is hard, so don't slack off. His tests are hard but if you do the review assignments, homework, and actually put in the effort, then you should be fine. He really knows his chemistry so feel free to ask him any questions. He gives partial credit too on tests. Very funny and sarcastic in lecture. Hard subject, great professor.
Tests are long and tough. He explains everything in detail during lectures. Don't miss lab because you will need the points. He is great as what he does, and if you can do well in his course you'll walk away really knowing the material.
Super chill guy and great at explaining lectures. Review q's help a lot and they're pretty much similar to the ones on exams. Quizzes are from HW problems from the book & labs are easy points so don't miss them! Not the easiest class but an A is doable and a B is easy to achieve if you put in enough effort. Take good notes & write everything down!
Professor Cullen does not explain the ideas in details in lecture and the material that is used as textbook is not a good resource for being successful in the lectures. Practicing the problems on the study guide sometimes would help but always there is some inconsistency between the lecture and the book, so resources are limited for help.
Its a tough course. You have to work hard, but it is doable. He explains everything well and is very helpful during labs.
He's so friendly just like a good friend of yours, but when it comes to teaching he is very knowledgable and he did very well explaining things. He's talented, admirable! Very understanding (ex. sig figs, partial credits, extra credits, ...). I absolutely learned a lot! Love Chem so much after this class, it takes me closer to pharmacy school!
I like that he doesn't require Cengage hw. All you need to do is doing homework for your own benefit. He has quizzes and if you do homework, quizzes will be like piece of cake. I had to do Cengage in Chem1A and did not learn anything because all I did was guessing for the answers and trying to those done in order to receive credit, but didn't learn
He loves Star Wars and plays Pokemon Go. Witty and Nerdy. Lectures great and his Tests are fair and not very difficult. But I understood most of the concepts and I love chemistry. But he is easy to approach.
fantastic lecturer. He's not easy but he's very fair. G Chem is a difficult class. This won't be an easy A, but if you work you'll do fine. Make sure to get as many easy lab homework points as possible. My class was overall hard working and many people received A's.
He is very nice and approachable. He has office hours and is always there to help. Very helpful during labs. His tests are really hard, so make sure you do the reviews and ask questions before the test. Practice!!! Nerdy, smart and nice. Totally recommend.
Professor Cullen explains all the concepts clearly, and answers all the questions in the class, lab an office hours. You should really study to get an A in his class, and do the online homework is very helpful to increase your grade. Professor also allows you to make up your poor grades by taking an extra credit quiz.
Hard professor overall, and makes you work really hard for your grade. Super hard exams, really need to show up to every class in order to understand! Overall, hard professor, but he does amazing lectures.
Do not underestimate Chem 1A. It is a very difficult class but not impossible. The textbook is hardly ever used, BUT you should do the optional textbook questions if you want to do well. For someone who isn't Chemistry intuitive, it is a MUST to put in the extra work, or you will not pass. Practice problems and tutors are your best friends!
Professor Cullen has his moments where he can be pretty cool and somewhat helpful but most of the time he tends to be kind of a jerk. You will ask a question in class and he will condescendingly answer as if he is annoyed that you don't understand.
It's his first time teaching CHEM3, I get it. But his lectures were boring and not helpful. I don't feel like I learned anything. If you want to do well then you need to read the textbook. 4 tests, plus final. Weekly labs. Weekly quiz. Online homework. He's young, chill, and funny. But not the best teacher. Take him if you're an independent learner
Professor Cullen was a good professor and this class was pretty straightforward. Lecture days were lectures and note taking, lab days are just labs, and you usually get out early both days. There's tests, quizzes, labs, homework, and a few class assignments for your grade. He's a cool guy and grades pretty easily. Do your work and study for an A!!
Cullen is a knowledgeable professor, he knows what he teaches but tests are really heavy and sometimes unexpected. you will have to do the laps really accurately or you won't get credit. lots of online hw. This class needs lots of studying. Make sure you take notes during lectures and the problems he does. not an easy A.
He's a super approachable guy. Make sure to visit his office hours since that helped me out a lot. He also does study sessions fridays before the test. Don't rush through tests and labs. There are 4 tests, some quizzes and the final. Sapling (online hw) is pretty straightforward too so. Read the book before lectures if chem isn't your strongest.
His tests are hard and require you be able to apply an understanding of the concepts vs. just answer questions that resemble some examples. However, he awards tons of partial credit, so show your work! Chemistry is just a touch subject, so attend lecture, do the homework (Sapling), and ask him questions in and outside of class. He'll help you!
I took Chemistry 1A during Spring 2017. I believe that professor Cullen is really kind and gives you good feedback, but at the same time, he grades hard on Labs and Exams. Basically, this class was super hard. There were 4 exams, several quizzes, online homework, and labs. For online homework, you need to spend so much time to complete it.
His lectures are super note heavy, he says a lot of other important details while you write (how I fell behind) He goes through everything extremely fast and by the time you're finished writing he's done the math problems and already explained how to do it. Online homework is really hard and expects you to memorize a lot of other stuff on your own
Not an easy B! He is very knowledgable and he does expect you to put in the effort. His tests are difficult, mostly because his examples are elementary versions of his questions. If you take good notes on his lectures, review his examples, do the chapter worksheets, and most importantly read THE BOOK you should be okay. Nice but can be sarcastic.
Professor Cullen is a great professor, but don't expect an easy A or even B. His tests are difficult, but reasonable, and he provides study guides that have many of his questions on them. He has lots of office hours and responds to emails often. He just wants you all to do well, and is great at teaching concepts. Can be a tough grader, though.
Honestly take a different science course if its for GED. He seems arrogant & covers a lot in one day & expects you to have it down. The online homework was hard.
Hands down, the best Chemistry professor I've taken. I took his 1B course over the summer and his son born the first day of class!! And even though he was absolutely exhausted, he came in everyday ready to teach. Super clear and straight forward lectures, the study guides for his tests really helped and so does the homework (but there is a lot)
Don't get me wrong, Mr. Cullen is a nice guy and really fun to talk with when not related to chemistry. He is extremely demanding for an introductory general chemistry teacher and expects an unreal amount from his students. Exams are a very difficult and leave you guessing. Stay away from his as a professor if at all possible. Others are better!!
He is an amazing professor! I actually started to like chem bc of him. His lectures are great and he is really dedicated and good teacher. He actually knows what he is talking about. But the class itself is bit hard just bc chem isn't an easy subject. He grades tough but fair. You actually have to try to earn A. I wish he teaches Chem 1B too.
I didn't learn a thing leading up to Professor Cullen's first exam. Lectures and homework are time consuming and will not prepare you for material on exams. He gives a lot of busy work during class that does not reflect what you will be tested on. I would avoid this professor because he's arrogant, unapproachable, and does not teach/grades harshly.
Mr. Cullen is a nice guy and tries to be understanding of his student but never in my life have i seen a teacher who grades so harsh on labs and tests. the tests are very hard and confusing and there is a LOT of online homework assigned that will take me a few hours at least but only count towards 5 or 10 points in my grade.
Couldn't tell if he was nice or not. He's arrogant and sarcastic, never had a good time in the class. Expects way too much for an introductory chemistry class that most people are just taking because they have to. He goes over examples in his lectures but always brags about how much harder he will make them on exams. AVOID
Seems like a nice guy (at first) but he could do better. Mandatory $40 extortion code for the Pearson online HW + lab book, too many assignments, and grades tests with an iron fist. Cullen, I suggest you don't make your students memorize so much. It's an intro class, not a graduate chem class. You were a student once too, remember?
Didn't read the textbook because his lectures were enough to study for the test. Lectures are him reading from slides and they are very heavy. Fair grader and kinda funny. At the beginning of every lecture, he hands out quizzes and you only have 5 minutes to complete them so try not to be late.
Professor is a nice professor, but he does want every student to truly understand all the materials. Chemistry is not an easy subject, and even with some prior understanding of chemistry, I still had to work quite a bit to earn my A. Definitely take him if you are a science major. He is also very understanding and accessible outside of classroom.
Professor Cullen is the best chem professor at IVC. His lectures are interesting and his tests are very basic and easy. Take him if you are not a science guy.
I have never written a review on rate my professor, but Prof. Cullen had made a remarkable impression on me this past semester. I have never met a professor that is more willing to help, more accessible outside his classroom, and more responsible with swift responses through email. He's a real one!
I saw all the old reviews and was initially wary of this prof but honestly, the reviews were hardly fair at all. Cullen is a wonderful professor who is more than willing to help you out on a difficult subject like chemistry. Homework is on sapling and helps tremendously. Exam questions similar to the lecture practice questions. 11/10 recommend.
One of the best Professors taken so far. His exams are quite tough, but if you carefully put your effort into it, A is easy as a piece of cake. He gave extra credit near the final to boost up your grade. His final exam is unexpectedly easy, even easier than small exams. Grading lab is quite harsh. STRONGLY RECOMMENDED
This professor is a very solid choice. He has a great sense of humor, teaches very well, and everything from homework to labs, to quizzes, and tests are very fair if you put in the study time for it.
To be honest I don't know where to start. Although being informative this is one of the only professors I have worked with that is disrespectful in an online environment. Wholly unwilling to work with students and does not have much time to attend to anyone.
Coming from Saddleback I'm used to some laid back but strict policy professors. Professor Cullen is the exact opposite, strict policy and not a easy teacher to work with. If Chem was not required I would not have put up with Cullen.
Took him when did not go to college for COVID-19. Does not teach chem well. Had tough time to understand the material and he either help a little or not at all. Take someone else if you can or take it in another college.
All the tags I picked for this professor? Imagine the exact opposite, I am surprised this man has been teaching for this long.
Professor Cullen always posted easy to understand lectures and always made himself available. If you are not that good at chemistry I would recommend professor Cullen as he explains things very well and will always help you if you make the effort to meet with him in office hours. By far my best experience with chemistry.
Professor Cullen is approachable and very considerate. He understands what students have been going through during the semester and was always there to help. He might not seem very friendly at first, but if you go to his office hours, he is willing to help you out as much as possible.
toughest grader ever, labs and exams are going to lower your average big time!! i did alll extra credit given and literally had a raise of 0.30% which barely changed my grade, would never ever take with this professor again so harsh and very not understanding!
One of the best professors I've ever had. LOVE his teaching style. Gives concise lectures that reflect exams. Go to weekly office hrs, he will help you & answer any questions. Spend time on the Ch worksheets, they are a great study tool. Chem requires practice, if you don't put time in you won't get an A! Highly recommend if you want to learn chem!
Professor Cullen is one of my favorite professors so far. He's so caring and considerable. He cares that you learn the material and understand it. He'll help you get through the course and he's always available for office hours. Would strongly recommend If you're willing to put work into the course and answer the worksheets!
Great teacher. Very enthusiastic. Helps students outside of class. Recorded lectures are very good. iclicker and the optional worksheets are great. He gives you more than enough resources to prepare for exams, so you can pretty easily study efficiently.
SOLID Professor. Quickly responds to emails. Will answer any question CLEARLY. Super awesome surfer and snowboarder dude as well. Laid back personality. Labs require precision but this is no big deal. Exams are derived from lectures, there are no surprises. Study and LEARN the material and an A is no problem.
Took 1A with Cullen as well. Cullen is an absolute beast of a professor. Super laid-back and chill. Super accessible outside of class. Exams are derived from lectures there are no surprises. 1B is harder than 1A, LEARN the concepts do NOT memorize. I wish Cullen taught Organic chemistry!
Professor Cullen is the type of professor that you would actually learn something from and is not even in a hard way, he makes his lectures easy to understand. However, you do have to work for your grade, exams are not easy, but they're fair. Hence, as long as you study and keep up with the work, you'll actually learn chemistry and get a good grade
He is the best professor I've had so far and I wish I took him for Chem 1A too, would definitely take his class if he teaches Chem 12A and 12B. He made everything so easy to understand with his ppts and the way he teaches. He will go through some problems every lecture and explains them right after so it engrave in your mind! Love his class!
It is so bad I wanna give you a 0, but thats not possible so I give you a 1.
Super knowledgeable about the material and teaches it in an easy-to-understand way. Lots of homework/worksheets but if you do it and ask questions (he gives you plenty of class time) you'll do well. He is willing to help you if you ask for it & work hard. Tests and quizzes are challenging but fair if you study well! Would definitely take him again!
Professor Cullen is one of my favorite professors, he cares more that you actually learn the material than the grade. He's always willing to help and he is easily accessible for office hours. His lectures and exams are straightforward and easy if you did the required work.
Professor is a nice dude and gives great tips on how to succeed; however teaching methods were ineffective in my opinion. Lectures are recorded and put on canvas but was somewhat confusing to understand, grades harshly on labs and literally impossible to get 100% on the HW. Take a different professor if possible unless you are a fast learner.
Pretty great professor. Teaches Chem in a very understandable manner. Fair grading policies for everything- HW, labs, exams (which are said to be difficult, but it's nothing he doesn't cover & at most challenges you, in a good way). Genuinely cares for his students' success. Always happy to help. Definitely worth taking if you put in the effort.
Even though Chemistry is really tough in the summer session, Dr. Cullen really cares about his students and works through tough concepts patiently. His iClicker problem solving sessions boost your grade quite well (easy A section of the class in my opinion) and he has quiz corrections as well as a test grade replacement based on the final. 10/10!
To be honest, as an instructor, he makes chemistry really hard and the way he teaches is tough to approach. His tests are ridiculously hard and challenging. The lectures are pre-recorded and the same as the homework. The vids are pretty hard to understand and online homework is impossible to get the full credit for since it has a lot of questions.
U really have to put in the work. Cullen is ALWAYS accessible. Lectures are old and pre recorded so most of the time I had to ask him to explain stuff in person. Tests are hard. Really hard. He makes sure to really prepare you for whatever future chem class you're taking. He's a cool guy, but his teaching style wasn't for me. Good luck!
Super laid-back and nice, he does have a lot of homework and the tests are quite difficult, but if you can manage that then you would love this class as he is a great person.
Chem 1B is a hard class no matter who you take with. Cullen can be a difficult professor, but he is fair, understanding, and helpful if you ask questions. The lecture videos are old and you are expected to watch lectures before class and participate in class for points. Exams consist of 33 points multiple choice and 66 points problems/short answer
Test material only based on lecture videos and iclicker. Tests are hard (as all tests are), but not terrible. Lab grading is a little confusing, never really specified and it changes for each experiment. Homework is time consuming and annoying but final HW score always high. Very kind and accessible, makes Chem easy to understand!
Tests only based on lecture videos, no points are taken off for wrong answers in homework. Lectures are clear, lab grading is fair, tests are a little harder than 1A but definitely doable. Do the worksheets he gives and watch the lecture vids and you will do fine! Do better on final and he replaces test scores grades Amazing professor kind and fun!
He is very caring and almost always available outside of classroom. Recorded lectures are supposed to be watched on canvas before going to class. There are four exams and all the questions are from his lecture videos. There is also a total of four quizzes, and you can get up to half the points back if you do the quiz corrections.
I found Professor Cullen's class to be extremely enjoyable. If you are a student who likes to read ahead, this class is for you- as it's flipped, and you get to spend time practicing in class with the professor. He prepares you well for the tests with his study guides, and the tests are pretty fair overall.
Cullen was a great prof! He's accessible on discord which makes getting questions answered super easy. I thought the way the class was set up was good too (online lectures, in person problem solving sessions). Tests were hard in my opinion, but I felt that they were fair. Provides great support for when you need it and is overall a great professor.
BEST PROFESSOR EVER! Professor Cullen is hands down the best TEACHER I have ever encountered. He teaches the subject of chemistry so well and will answer every question you have. His exam's are very tough but he teaches you so well that you should be able to solve every question! This class requires a lot of effort and time, so put in the work!
I'd a 100% recommend Professor Cullen to anyone wanting to take gen chem! He's always happy to answer questions, easygoing with his students always up for a chat and grades fairly. Lectures are online but goes over material in person which is very helpful. Took it over the summer and even tho it's accelerated it was a really nice experience:)
He is a really great Professor!!!!!! I really want to take all my chem classes with him but unfortunately he only teaches gen chem :(. However, I really recommend him and he makes chem very clear and interesting. You can ask as much questions as you want and he will be happy answering you.
He knows his stuff well. I took both Chem 1A and B and got As on both. Lectures and labs are fun. He claims to be one of the most difficult chemistry professors in his department but I never felt like his exams were unfair. If you are interested/already proficient in chemistry, definitely take his course. He is genuinely such a great professor.
professor cullen is amazing! he's super nice and understanding. his online lectures are genuinely good, u rlly don't need the book if u actively watch them. u get test replacements through the final, and u get points just for showing up and doing the in-class problems. u def do have to study, as chem 1b is a hard class, but cullen makes it doable!!
Professor Cullen might be one of my favorite professors I have ever had. He made chemistry fun and I was eager to learn. He is so generous when it comes to helping students out. You can tell he cares for everyone. Chem1B is a difficult subject, but he made it quite enjoyable. I am sad that he doesn't teach Chem12. I highly recommend taking him!
If you get a bad score on any of the 3 exams n the final exam grade is higher, he'll replace them w the higher one! Very lenient, u can come into class late (don't do it tho), labs and hw can be turned in a week late with full credit. He may seem tired but give the guy a break he has 3 kids n back-to-back classes. Seats fill up quick register asap!
Cullen made CHEM1B truly enjoyable. All his tests are fair and come from either his worksheets, lectures, or practice problems in class. He has a flipped classroom style, so make sure to watch lecture videos before coming into class, or you'll be lost when doing practice problems. He's funny, caring, and answers your questions thoroughly
always willing to help. late hw/labs- no penalty for 1 week. quiz corrections earn half of points u missed. must watch lectures before class; vids r p detailed. exams not cumulative but final is. if u flunk an exam but show improvement on those topics on the final he replaces exam grade w/ 75%. chem is tough regardless but he wants u to succeed.
One of my favorite profs of all time. He is about 20% of the reason I'm now a chemistry major at UCSD
he is my fave human
Professor Cullen is so kind and helpfulThe content of the class is hard and not supposed to be easy but he makes it easy to understand. The tests are difficult (but fair) especially the multiple choice but as long as you do the worksheets, in class problems, and the HW you'll be prepared and get a high B/A. Def recommend him!! Go to Office hours!!
Professor Cullen is an amazing professor. He truly cares about his students and even though this class was hard, he made it possible to get an A in chemistry. His tests are pretty hard but he gives you many practice problems that will heavily prepare you if you do the work! I truly recommend him!
I love Prof Cullen! He genuinely cares for his students so much. He has a phd in education and it really shows; he is such a good and patient teacher and really makes sure everyone understands the concepts. Chemistry is not an easy subject, but he makes everything very digestible. Exams are easy if you do and understand the assignments and lectures
He's caring and wants you to succeed in the class. You have to put in the work to study lecture before hand, but Cullen makes chem easier to understand; he also posted instructional videos on Canvas. I never read the textbook, just studied those videos and did the online hw. After having other professors elsewhere, he's on the top of my list.
Took Cullen for 1A and 1B. 1A was a 1-3 in terms of difficulty, 1B was a 3-5 difficulty level imo. Cullen is easy to talk to and cares about his students. He does a flipped classroom where you watch video lectures at home and do practice questions in class. Works great for me, hopefully for you too. Exams are straightforward but can be challenging.
Terrible grader, always handing out low scores without any helpful feedback. His exams feel like they're designed to crush your spirit rather than test your knowledge. Basically, he's just not a great teacher, not inspiring, not supportive, and definitely not someone you want to learn from. His class is way too stressful!
Prof Cullen is one of the best chem prof on campus, he does a flipped classroom where you watch lec vids at home and do practice problems in class. It can feel like a lot having vids to watch every weekend. But he explains thoroughly, and teaches well. Super nice and caring, actually wants students to succeed. His exams are challenging but fair.
A great caring and respected professor. Have high standards for his students and coworkers, but will fully support you and cares for you. Final exam can replace any of the 4 exams as long as you scored higher on that portion of the final. Attendance isn't mandatory but basically is there is a worksheet. Creates his own class discord. Go to reviews
Professor Cullen's Chem 1B class is difficult but fair, there are no surprises on quizzes or exams. Make sure you stay on top of watching lecture videos before attending class/problem-solving sessions to not fall behind. Labs in this class are also way more difficult than 1A and are typically multiple days (1 week extensions on labs and HW though!)
tough grader. class averages are Ds. allows extensions on labs and quiz corrections.
unfair grading
He has a VERY clear standard of grading. He told everyone in the beginning of the semester. If you watch his lecture videos beforehand the class wouldve been much easier for people who didnt. He's willing to help ANYTIME if ppl actually try. Very sweet and inspirational.
litch the goat. best chem professor ever. amazing dude. i actually understand chem now. if you can take him please do. get on that waitlist and yk what MANIFEST that people drop. unfortunately did not have him for chem 1a and fought for my life every day
catfishhh. he is a great lecturer but he grades SO harsh. he marks every detail. like yeah he is a nice person but destroys your grade. just do 100 practice problems and watch his videos. tests are so long compared to 1A. labs are much worse too but he will always help. nice guy
It's better to take CHEM 1B with Cullen than with any other professor at this college. He's tough on grading lab reports, yet accessible outside of class to help you with them. Attendance is mandatory if you want to receive points on the worksheets he gives out each lecture (flipped classroom). Advice: your lecture video notes are your daddy.
Made a difficult class a bit nicer. Has lots of availability outside of class for hw/test prep help. Grading was very clear, just make sure you watch the videos before the lectures. Always go to his office hours and study sessions at MESA where he gives out free practice worksheets. Also very nice and gives so many opportunities to better ur grade.
This class is hard with anyone but Cullen made it so much nicer. He had so much resources. So approachable to ask questions and everyone in my class was also so helpful. The labs are indeed long and he does grade it super precisely (where I lost most points). His final brought my grade up a whole letter grade. It replaces all exams so study well.
Harsh grader, but the hard exams prepare you for the final exam (easier than his tests & replaces your past exams). He is a bit rude sometimes & gets frustrated when explaining content (if you STILL don't understand). Overall, a fair grader. Study hard & use all resources if you want an A. Don't slack. I learned a lot in this class. Good proff.
Chem 1AH!!! The difference between honors and regular chem is the project. He grades everything very hard. you watch lectures at home and go to class for practice. He offers test score replacement if you do better on the final, allowing a grade boost. Only recommend 1a with him if you want to take chem 1b with him so that you get used to his class.
Let me be clear, this is a hard class. You move through topics very quickly and you really need to watch the lecture videos before class or you will fall behind. That being said, Professor Cullen does an amazing job explaining the content and is always willing to help anyone who is putting in the effort to understand.
