He is the perfect example of a professor that actually cares about the students.
very easy going, willing to always help
Great professor, nice and friendly nature, incredibly helpful, great knowledge of chemistry. Makes a tough subject a little more approachable. highly recommended.
Dr. Dowd is pretty cool. His english skills are pretty weak but hey...he's a chem professor. Got a funny delivery of his material too.
A LITTLE HARD TO CATCH ON TO WHAT HE'S TEACHING, BUT HE IS VERY EASYGOING...HE HAS SOME GOOD STORIES TO TELL, GOOD,SMART GUY
he is very easy going. when u get out of the class you will actually know the material. overall nice guy. very helpful.
This was a tough class but he really helped me through it. Every night I left class feeling a little smarter. If you don't understand lecture or lab he'll go over it with you as long as it takes until you really get it. He's amazing. And- who quits the NYPD to be a chem prof at Harper? He does!
I learned a lot from this teacher. I used to have no understanding whatsoever about chemistry in high school. Came out of his class with a B. He is very clear in his teachings and he's a funny guy. Very helpful and approachable.
He is one of the best teachers I've had. A very laid-back guy, very patient, and downright hilarious. You'll enjoy his class. Typical lectures, but he's willing to explain. Grades depend on exams and labs, mostly.
this teacher is a must take for chemistry!! He obtained his doctorite from Noter Dame! He is really willing to help you pass his class if u need it. MUST TAKE
this is an ok teacher, he is kinda personal,,, ya believe me. i would say try to find other good teacher and if u don't have any choice then u know wht u got a do. a'right. peace......
He is the MAN who supposed to teach chemistry. Very helpfull and easy going teacher if you pay little attention in the class. You do not need to buy a book, You wil find lots of hands out durring class and they good enough to get an "A".The laboratory with him will be fun with the education. The thing that you have to do is to pay attention in class
This guy knows his resturants like he knows his chemisty. He's amazing, most helpful teacher i have met my whole life. Very approachable, love sports, owns the whole tower record, and love his kids. And he love to pick on people that don't come to class.
He is such a hard teacher. He expects you to already know the material and the class just drags on.
Very dry, subtle humor. A man of few words, but is extremely intelligent and the kind of teacher you'll always remember as one of your best.
this class is really hard, you need to work very hard in the class. do the chem skill builder cuz it helps with your grade. study study study, these tests are hard
His explanations are very unclear. Each class just drags on. He's not a good teacher in the sense that he can't teach. He asks you questions about the topic before even introducing it to you. Difficult to get a good grade in this class.
WOW u guys must b retarted he is the nicest teacher i have ever met. I only went to class on lab days and i gotta B. Test are so easy compared to 122, And the final is really easy its meant to boost your grade. He loves kids and loves 2 chill after class. He loves talking,he loves food,he loves sports. Just do chem skill builder and ul b fine.

good teacher
very monotone, and dry. absoloutely no personality!!! easygoing teacher but noo hes like a zombie teaching.
Professor is lazy and doesn't do much work. He doesn't teach well, so it's tough to do well on tests. If you do the questions in the book, you'll fair well in the class.
He really wants you to learn and understand the material.
Great teacher, always anwsers questions cleary, open to help you any time you need it. Has faith in his students. Labs are easy, i got 100's on every one. Just do chem skill builder online, which you can redo until you get the perfect grade. One of the easiest chemistry classes you can probably take as long as you do the assigned work, which isnt v
he's a great teacher and his grading is very easy!
this teacher is really awesome he is really nice and is there to help he wants you to understand the material very well before moving on! whoever says this guy isnt good, really needs to drop outta college cuz he is a great easy teacher! i highly highly recommend!!!
Great teacher. Mr. Dowd explained everything very well, from topics in class to labs. Highly recommended!!
in high school, i hate chemistry and i avoided it as long as i could, and when i took his class it became my minor. he is just an excellent teacher and makes chemistry really interesting. i highly suggest taking him. to warn you though, his humor is really dry, but overall he's a really great guy and really wants everyone to succeed!
on tests and what not. And then 2 years later I took him again for 122 and passed with an A again (while trying to relearn everything from 121 because I had forgotten all of it). To cut things short he's a great teacher and I think he helps you to succeed and get a good grade more than anything else but you have to try no doubt. (continued below)
Ok, so I took him both for CHM121 & 122. When I first took 121 I didn't like chemistry period (high school teacher sucked) but I passed his class with an A though I did struggle the entire semester to get good or average grades (continued below)

He was very laid back....I didnt really know my grade until the end of the semester I think he may have curved are tests and made up lab grades because we just had to show up...the tests were difficult but Chemistry for me is a struggle and passed with a C
EASY!! He is super easy, little work required. You don't need the book!! He is very boring at lecturing but if you got a clue you should ace the class with no problem
Lazy teacher, but excpets alot from you. HIs tests are hard. But the good thing is he never gives back the labs. So you could get full points in labs. I would recommed someone else.
This professor is extremely understanding and helpful. His tests are based on the material in class. He gives tons of practice for each test. Tests are fair and grades are fair. If Chemistry is difficult for you I would recommend this professor.
Dowd knows his stuff and will do example problems with you until you are blue in the face if you ask him. He doesn't load you up with useless knowledge, he shows you how to do things and answers any questions you throw his way! He can be a bit lazy, but don't take advantage, stay on top of your homework because there isn't much!
Do not take him if you are there to learn. Disorganized and lazy. Intelligent and could give good explanations, but rarely does so. Easy grader for labs. Good exam reviews.
The best chem teacher at Harper. He's competent, cares about his students doing well, enthusiastic about he teaches, and he good at teaching. (Too bad he doesn't teach much anymore! :(
Dowd is an extremely helpful professor. He knows what he's doing and he's always willing to help you in anyway. I'm not too good in chemistry but i did pretty well. If you go to class and practice i'm sure you'll Ace the class
he's okay. not the best teacher out there. if you can take another teacher, if not you'll be fine, just make sure to study, read and do practice problems by yourself. Hes a really nice person thou
Really nice person, helps you a lot, the tests are not easy though
Good teacher who explains concepts well. You will never need to have the textbook but will need to buy the online homework program. He'll answer any type of question you have to help you out and can be funny if you make a couple jokes first. His tests are hard but he gives 2-3 practice tests per test so they are not too bad if you prepare w/ those.
Reading the other reviews I feel like we must be talking about a different teacher Dowd rushes through each lesson not taking time to explain anything DO NOT take if you are not already strong in Chem and Math I asked him for help after class and he never showed up to our meeting time and never emailed me back when I asked to reschedule
A nice guy. Likes to help. The tests are really hard. It feels like he didn't even teach the problems he gives in the test. Once you get the hang of it you should be fine. Otherwise--STAY AWAY!!! Imagine a train hitting a lamppost(your the lamppost). That is what you'll feel like on the first test. Good luck and SURVIVE!!
He's a reasonable teacher. Lecture orientated class. Sometimes his explanations can be a unclear - but just raise your hand and ask a question. Show up to class, do the labs, do the Mastering Chem, and keep track of dates. The tests weren't that bad either - just review notes and skim the powerpoints.
Overall, he's an decent teacher. He is more then willing to answer your questions. We barely used the book and all homework was online. You have to do very little work for post/pre labs. He puts 2-3 practice tests for you on blackboard. If you do your work and you study you should be able to pass the class with at least a B.
If you go to a major university and want to knock out a chem course during the summer, TAKE THIS CLASS. Very little hw and lab prep, labs not even graded. He tells you exactly what will be on the test, and problems are either from class notes or directly off practice exams that he posts online. I couldn't be happier that I took this course
this guy could not be less enthusiastic about what he is teaching. I was very excited to take this class because i loved it in highschool, now i cant wait for this to end. he doesn't teach, likes to give you internet homework before he even "teaches" you the stuff, and then just says "do it"......take a different teacher please.
Totally agree with the previous note. He doesn't explain anything, all the problems you have to do by yourself. Gives lots of homework not even covered the topic. For his class you have to study home and just come to class to do the exams. No help at all from him!!!!!
Easy grader. Very knowledgeable professor, gives clear explanation. Don't need to worry about labs, he explains everything and makes life easier. Study for exams, they are kind of hard. Final is hard state exam, but he curves grades.
So overall chm121 is tough but dowd is awesome. He gives great lectures and lots or practice problems. The test are difficult if you don't study so just study. But Tom Dowd is chill and great.
Though Prof. Dowd appears to be a bit unenthusiastic at times, he gives great lectures, and I never had to open the book once. Tests were fairly easy, and Dowd did not grade harshly at all. Also, beware of Mastering Chemistry, as Dowd forgot to change the due dates of the assignments, yet they ended up being due the last day of class.
Great Professor. If you ask questions he will answer them clearly. He tries to be funny. Only homework are labs and a few mast chem. Only three tests and a final. If you show interest he will try to help you more. Lectures are pretty long, so staying involved and asking questions will help you remember the material. Take lots of organized notes.
He's a kaka head. He is very boring and not willing to help. Tries to blame student for his or her failure even though I've been having a hard time understanding. Asked for help and will never show up at his office as promises. Again, he's a kakahead.
study guides are not similar to exams, he doesn't care and like others said he doesn't even show up to his office
Great guy, would definitely take again, u dont really need the book in his course, biggest plus of taking Dowd is that he goes real easy on labs, trust me, real easy on labs
Professor Dowd is a very stoic individual, but he wants his students to succeed and use the material in their further applications. Ask lots of questions, go in for extra help and participate in classes, because he will take this into consideration and try to help you out as much as possible. I'm not great at chemistry, and he helped me improve.
He is a good professor . Do not buy book for this class. There is not much homework for this class . Only tip that I can give is practice as much as possible for his tests. He makes the grading system as good as possible . If you work, you can pass with an A.
chem has always been my worst subj and this class was legit a pretty easy A. goofed off with my friends most of the time (dont recommend this btw) and only studied the practice tests he put up night before the exam. got highest scores due to self-studying. final was really hard though, barely passed it but theres a curve
Not the best teacher, however, tests aren't hard if you do the practice ones online. Barely any mastering chemistry, probably only got assigned like 4-5. No lab exams or quizzes, but we have to turn in pre-labs and post-labs. Not a bad choice got the grade i wanted but you will have to work for it.
Took CHM121 and his tests are SUPER HARD. His communication is so poor, he never answers my emails. Even the students in my class claim that he never answers their emails. I'm not the best at chemistry and him teaching did not really help me at all. Just take somebody else...
This class is super easy. The practice tests are very similar to the actual exam. Attendance isn't mandatory but if you don't understand chem i recommend you go to class. But no lab exams and labs are super easy. Only a couple of mastering chemistry but other than that no hw. Totally would take his class again.
Best teacher I have ever had. I am not good at Chemistry but he makes it understandable. You have to go to lecture, it is the only way to learn. He has a special grading system which only helps you out at the end. DO ALL OF THE PRACTICE TESTS AND ASK QUESTIONS. It is the only way to pass. He knows Chemistry, take him.
He is a good professor. The lab is super easy compare to other professor. Usually you have to write many papers for lab report but not in his class. And there is less homework. The exams will not be that hard. If you did the practice exam that he gave it to you, you will receive good grade. But Final exam was hard.
Dowd is an amazing professor! As someone who isn't the greatest at chemistry, he really helped me learn more than I did in previous classes. He is super smart and passionate about what he is teaching. His labs aren't that hard and he didn't give too much homework. Missing class isn't a good idea but he understands if you're gone. Take him!
He's a great professor who cares and explains thoroughly if you don't understand something. The labs are straightforward and generally worth full credit. The tests don't really seem to match up to all the curriculum so much, but I'm also bad at chem, so take that into consideration. Overall, easy high grade and you can learn a lot. Very helpful.
Tom is a good professor, he will help you immensely if you ask for it. For someone with a monotonous voice he sure is funny. He replaces the lowest test grade with final grade. Would take again
His "cutting edge chemistry" FYS course was a complete joke. He went straight through it with chemistry most days, and then randomly assigned a 7 page paper about the course at the end. How are we supposed to write about a course that rarely even took place?? Poor.
Dowd is very knowledgeable of chemistry topics but isn't very helpful when you don't understand something.
Professor Dowd is the best professor I have ever encountered in my academic career. He takes a challenging topic such as Chemistry and turns the material into a easy, straightforward processes. He's clear, concise, and genuinely cares about his students. Show up, ask questions, participate in the practice problems and you will be rewarded.
I really don't see why he has good reviews. He teaches off the power points with his monotone voice. He does a lot of problems on the board. He jumps right in and doesn't go into depth. You will need to pay close attention to understand and ask question.
Professor Dowd is a great professor and is always willing to help if you have questions. Definitely show up to every lecture and lab if you want to do well. Do the practice tests before each exam and complete every mastering chemistry assignment. I would highly recommend taking Proffesor Dowds class!
Out of all the chemistry professors, although not perfect, he is still the best teacher to take. He is not a tough grader, however, he does not teach you either. Be prepared to study on your own at home a lot if you aim for an A. It is doable though. If I had to take other chemistry class, I would definitely take him once again.
Professor Dowd is one of the best teachers I have ever had. If you show up and care about your grade he really cares about you! He wants his students to succeed but only if they put in the effort. He is awesome!! I highly recommend taking his course!!
Not only is Dowd a pleasant person, he is an EXCELLENT chem instructor. Timely, organized, clear; he knows how to simplify complicated equations. He is humble with the very rare occassion of an error being noted by a student during lecture. He is patient, kind hearted; has the students best interest at heart. Pract tests answers & work provided.
He's super chill and he's actually a really good teacher.
Dowd is a good guy but is not the best teacher. He is super laid back and an easy grader but I sometimes found lectures hard to follow. For labs if you show up and participate you will pass. I personally would not take him again, I'd look for a professor that's better with lectures and more passionate about teaching.
His class was very difficult and his tests were even more complicating which led me to drop his class. The teacher is fine overall but his lectures were really hard to understand too, youd have to like teach yourself everything...
Dowd is a great guy. I like the man, he is personable, relate able, and I really wish I had him years ago. In his age he has lost the zest for teaching. He goes through the motions, No surprise by the first test we were a week behind. I saw another chemistry class and knew I had made a mistake. Don't waste your money dropping this course. Just No.
Dr. Dowd took the complex topics and made them extremely easy to understand, he gives you multiple practices problems and practice exams to study with and will tell you EXACTLY what problems will be on the exam. Ask questions, he cares and wants you to succeed I could not of asked for a better professor.
The best teacher you can possible take for chemistry. Such a G, I cant say enough good things about him. The most laid back, funny, and intelligent professor I've ever had. Is not a hard ass and grades very few things. Just do the study guide 2 days before each exam and you'll do very well in the class. Take him if you can!!!
Like the others said, yes he has a monotone and he is old school but if you pay attention to the lectures you will pass the class easily. He posts practice exams which are very helpful because most questions on the exam come from those practices. He does a good job of explaining everything, available outside of class. aking him again for CHM 122!
The best professor Ive had in my entire college years this far! Best and easiest lectures to follow along and definitely engages you and makes you understand the concept. He is very funny and respected. Attendance isnt mandatory but definitely recommend if you want a good grade. Would definitely take him again if I could!
Ok. Hard to find during his office hours, and grading scale is not very clear. If you like a professor that lets you learn on your own and not a ton of homework, then this is the class for you.
Still taking this, in my last week. He does not care about you as his student, just does the bare minimum. He rarely will respond to your email with actual concern so be ready for that. 2 weeks to finals he did not post ANYTHING and then threw 2 labs and 2 exams the last week. Makes videos instead of zooms.
he was not helpful at all. I have no idea how he is rated so well. I struggled a lot this entire sem because he did not respond to any of the emails. Everyone in my class had the same problems. It was the hardest online class i have ever took. No communication with him was so hard. he also doesnt tell your grade when u ask. he emails them twice
Just finished taking this class and it was horrible. If you are looking to take Chem online with him, don't. He does the bare minimum and only tells you your grade 2 weeks before the final. Being online communicating with him really bad and he often took days to answer back. Just don't put yourself through the stress to be honest it's not worth it.
Started and dropped his class on day 1. I emailed him a very simple yes or no question over his course guidelines and I have yet to hear from him. People who took him last semester were right. He does not care and has trouble communicating with his students. Not worth the stress and I am sure his homework will be tough in these times.
I'm sure he's a great professor in-class, but when it came to online, it didn't feel like I was learning anything at all. He posted an announcement the first day, posted every single assignment for all units at once, including the final exam, and just... disappeared? Only way to ever hear from him is email, and even that takes 4 days for a response
So, Im retaking this class. First exam the same difficulty, but he took off one hour from the exam. I search the same information on YouTube and dudes explain the same material way better as he explains it on his online lectures. And YouTube is free))I love chemistry, but he makes me hate it.
Worst teacher I have ever had, let alone during a nationwide pandemic and he cant even respond to emails or provide adequate lecture materials and/or notes.
Didn't enter any grades into Blackboard for the entire semester until 3 weeks before finals. Doesn't respond to emails. Useless lectures that aren't relevant to what he puts on the exams. Still doesn't know how to teach an online class despite the fact that we're been in this pandemic for over a year now. Would not recommend even to my worst enemy.
People who complain about him are just ridiculous. Sure, he doesnt necessarily communicate with his students. However, If you put in time into other RESOURCES, theres no absolute reason for you to be failing the course. I currently have an A+. You will have to work and put time into it. Stop relying on the prof. Youre in college.. realize that!!
By far the worst learning experience I've ever had. The class is isolated and he takes days to answer the simplest of administrative questions. His teaching content is pre-recorded, disorganized, and poorly relayed and has nothing to do with the content of the exams he makes us take through the textbook publisher. 0/10 would not recommend.
This is by far the worst class Ive ever taken. He only tells you your grade once or twice, the exams are really hard and not similar to the study guides he gives you, he hardly communicates with the class, and a lot of the people I talked to throughout said they were struggling to pass. Save yourself the headache and just find another professor.
I don't know if it was because of the online format, but Prof Dowd was not the best choice. His lectures were all pre-recorded and he RARELY gets back to emails. You have to keep asking what your grade is because he does not post it online. Exams were always different from the practice we did in class which always made me feel unprepared for tests.
Professor Dowd is a knowledgeable, kind, and understanding instructor who encourages students to ask him any inquiries. He is accessible by email, Blackboard Collaborate, or in-person meetings. His lectures are easy to follow and his practice tests are useful. Overall, he supplies students with the tools for success with homework, labs, and exams.
He is very caring about his students and will always help you in any way he can without putting you down. However, he never grades the labs or work till the end of the semester so you won't know if you're passing. Lenient teacher accepts late work but very hard tests that decide most of your grade.
Professor Dowd gives pretty good lectures but he doesn't grade until the very end of the semester. While you do get back your test scores which are the majority of your grade it still is unsettling to have nothing in blackboard until it all floods in at the end of the semester. Do the labs and you will get 100% most likely.
Dowd's a kind man. For exams: do NOT bother studying the lectures, only study his exam reviews. Labs are confusing but he gives 100% as long as it's turned in + accepts late work. Only issue was the final exam, he said it would be just like his exams, but in reality it's a completely different state-mandated test, and was extremely difficult.
Dowd is awesome. Super chill but will call you out if you don't show him at least some respect during class i.e. listen/pay attention. I honestly preferred Kidwell, as you will be better prepared for the ACS, however I really enjoyed Dowds class for different reason. If Chemistry or science are not your major, this is the professor for you.
Tom is the BEST!! The most down to earth and approachable professor I have ever had at Harper. He is super funny and kind and will really take all the time needed to make sure his students understand the material. As long as you attend lecture you will do well on the exams. Do yourself a favor and take his class, you will not regret it!!!!
didnt get any grades put into the gradebook the whole semester. lectures are confusing and very boring
Generally I can only speak for chem121 but I can say this... Mr Dowd is a good teacher he really good at pointing out what you will NEED to know to do certain problems and exams. But don't think you can skip class tho because if you skip class you WILL struggle in the class. Lectures are generic. Labs are easy as long you ask for help.Tests matter.
He's a nice person, but it irritated me that he didn't put any grade in the grade book the entire semester. I really only knew my grade when he told the entire class their grades nearing the end of the semester. He seems to know what he's talking about, but I feel like he just gives the bare minimum of concepts, rather than explaining it fully.
Don't do it pls
For independent students with no interest in chemistry, Dowd is your professor. He teaches the bare bones of the class in monotonous, sleep-inducing lectures and gives 100% for just turning in the lab reports. With that said, the exams were exactly like the in-class examples and practice tests, and he covered the majority of the ACS final material.
Mr. Dowd is overall a good chem teacher. He is perfect for a chem class if you are just taking chem 121/122 as it wont be too difficult and you can still earn a good grade. He can be monotone in his lectures, however, he really knows his chemistry stuff. Study the past exams/practice tests for exams and you will be fine.
All of these reviews that rate him 2 or 1 are all fake. You have to be completely braindead to not like this guy. I only took Chem 121 though so who knows. There's no homework in the class except from the labs every week which are easy. Attendance is not mandatory but show up because dowd is the goat. Tests are easy if you show up and participate.
He's not a bad professor by any means. Labs are super easy and post-labs are graded as completion credit. Doesn't input any grades until the semester ends. Tests are not terrible honestly. No homework but expect to do a good chunk of learning on your own outside of class.
He's just the greatest to ever do it
Chemistry is very difficult, so this class itself is not easy. Professor Dowd gives practice tests which are very similar to the actual test so you can understand what you know. If you are going to take gen chem 2 take it with him because he gives good lectures and is a good teacher.
Hes genuinely awesome. he's not hard at all, he does have an interesting grading technique but it works. he's awesome take him you won't regret it.
The students who give a bad rating are lazy and don't ask for help. Chemistry was new to me and I felt dumbfounded each lecture. I went up and asked him question after class and was mainly the only student who did. Pearson assignment needs to be done. Easy grader as long as you complete the homework and get feedback. Very kind, knowledgeable.
Dowd is the absolute GOAT I took him this semester for 122 but had Dr Greene for 121. The difference was night and day. He actually made me love chemistry again after whatever the last semester was. Super chill guy. wish he could be my prof for organic chemistry too. Even though this class was at night I would take it 100 times again just for Dowd.
For those saying they were confused about his grading. Yes he doesn't put most of the final grades in till the last week but he makes it really clear that whatever you're getting on the exams during the semester that's gonna b about what your final grade is. Also he basically tells you what's going to be on the exam if u pay attention in class.
Was an all around nice guy with humor. Didn't care about attendance but recommend did at least coming to labs. Did a good job teaching and made notes accessible outside of class for easy review. Biggest flaw is he doesn't post grades so you don't know your grade until after finals. If he posted grades I'd give him a 5.
Professor Dowd was such a great professor. He explicit tells you what will be on the exams you take in the class and what you should be aware of. Don't take this course and expect to do good without actually studying and putting in the effort, he can only do so much. He is a late grader and intimidating sometimes but he is insightful and kind.
