Took his online course. Very easy to understand, however, lots of reading and paper. Test were writing essays. Lots of student interaction via chat room. Great instructor.

Mr. Eiland is a great teacher. He's very motivational, explains very thouroughly and will allow you to re-do your assignment for a higher grade, regardless of how long it takes you. Mr. Eiland should get tenure, not Mr.Miles (Mr. toilet paper refiller).

Mr. Eiland is the best teacher one could ever have for English. Granted, he is somewhat of a tough grader, but he explains the material through and through and is always willing to explain things further if you just can't grasp it. He has helped me to actually enjoy English. Really great guy :)

best Eng. teacher i've ever had. not only explains technique, but also explains theory. everyone who wrote a negative comment is a lazy idiot. hands out a steady stream of work, but the work is very easy (especially Eng. 100) and the teacher is very patient. relaxed, & leaves you to your own devices

I took the DE class and it was not as difficult as I thought it would be. He holds weekly chat sessions on yahoo messenger and it's pretty effective as a teaching tool. He's very helpful in leading you to think about the selections read. I'd take another of his classes again.

Seems to be OK for ENG101, but TERRIBLE for 103. Doesn't explain ANYTHING, expects you to know how to do it his way without telling you what he wants. NO ASSIGNMENTS. That might sound good, but when you tank 1 of the 3 essays or 1 of the 3 tests, you're SCREWED. Take Dau instead.

A really cool guy. Super kick back and if you're self motivated in these (100 & 101) he's a very good professor. Doesn't have very many assingnments in 101 so you have to good on what you're given. He does grade fairly and it's not a tough class at all.

I had a difficult time with his teacher methods. I feel that he seemed to favor the male students. I understand why instructors need to be this way. I would recommend R. Iisel for ENG 101-103!!! Nows She's Awsome!!!

However, he's very ladi back and explains each assignment very clearly. Take advantage of his office hours, work hard, and try to gather your research as soon as possible for every paper, and youll pass

I took eilan for eng 103 H. real interesting class and fun. instead of poetry you anaylze/write about music. it is awsome. he is a great teacher. He doesnt give you answers. he directs you in the right direction.BAD: we were required to buy a text and he never referred to it. never opened the book , I still got an A and i blew 60 bucks.

He loves to hear himself talk! Tests are also on your own time in the testing center. Critical and loves to tear up your papers . Very knowledgeable regarding music and his band. You wont do well since he never refers to the book,but you'll learn about the Beatles, Steppenwolf, and Grateful Dead.

took his online class didnt learn a thing! Got a B but thats cuz I used what I learned in 101 (Dau). He is not that helpful. He's ok if you do the work and really try you will pass but hes not the best. (at least as an online teacher)

It was a hard class, but it got easier as it went on. Interesting if you like old music, but he let's you present stuff you like too. At first his grading seemed harsh, but it eased up. He gave me time to fix my final paper after it was due. Tests are in testing center which is LOUD!!

An easy class. Just do the assignments on your computer in class and then you take it to him and he tells you what to fix. He tells everybody that alot will not get done and he was right. Like half the class was gone by the end, but we all passed the last test. Take him if you do good on your own.

A fun class. ALOT of reading and that's what you talk about in class. The story's seem like nothing and then you discuss them and then they are really about stuff. Very cool. He won't call on you if you don't want to talk so some students dominate the class but it's intersting anyways. Papers are hard but I learned alot.

I learned a good deal about how to properly compose an essay. He's a perfectionist that is pretty demanding when it comes to essays. However, he does leave you with plenty of helpful criticisms, as well as several opportunities towards improving a poor grade. I plan on taking his 103 class in the near future.

Nice, funny guy. He is inconsistent though. He'll say one thing and then change it sometimes. He grades decently sometimes and ridiculously hard other times. The grades he gives for papers and tests seem to be based on what he feels like rather than by an objective standard. Near impossible to get an A in here.

Took him for Eng 100 and Eng 101. Wonderful teacher. Very helpful. Great instructor. Encourages you in areas you aren't so good at. Eng 100 involves computers, Eng 101 online was textbook involved. Lienent on redoing papers. Take him if you can focus on your own and not have someone always hovering over you.

He teaches from music lyrics. I enjoyed listening to music in class.The focus is understanding how to write from the various critical perspectives. I had a tough time because I wasn't super familiar with these. His grading was tough but I learned a lot as a result. He provided plenty of opportunities get a better grade too.

Wonderful teacher :) I was challenged on my writing, and sometimes it was hard, but I wrote my best work because of him. He can come across a little intimidating, but he's actually very helpful and available. He wants you to do well and pass the class. Plus, he's funny and class is never dull! Not always easy, but a great experience.

I took ENG101 on-line and Prof Eiland is a tough grader, but you will learn whether you want to or not. He answers all e-mails immediately and honestly. He is critcal, yet sincere about teaching. He is extremely encouraging if you put forth the effort.

I took his English 101 class but dropped after having a hard time figuring out something as simple as what the assignments were. Bits & pieces about assignments were on two different websites and in live chat sessions. He also warns that most of his students fail. If the class and assignments were more organized, I wouldn't have dropped.

I've taken several of Prof. Eiland's classes and I've really enjoyed them. He's very helpful and will work with you on something until you understand it. I'm surprised to see a student couldn't figure out something as simple as assignments, because its very easy to ask him about something if you're not sure.

He's a pretty chill teacher and obviously very smart. The work of the class was not too bad. I remember writing 2 essays and having 2 written tests overall. Not too bad. His class was interesting as well. He's also very nice and will help you with your work and give advice on how to make it better.

Eiland's 103 is a tough class, but he is a great professor. He's approachable, he responds to all emails quickly and is overall very helpful. He offered a rewrite of a paper, which was an excellent learning tool. I would definitely take another class with him.

Eiland is awesome!! His class discussions are student-driven and always interesting. If you do what he asks for the 2 papers and take the tests you'll get an A or B. He is always willing to help if you seem serious about the class.

Took the summer online class & I agree, his class is unorganized spanning across 2 sites, sometimes mixing with his 103 class. Outdated materials from '98. ONCE you get past this mess, his class is OK. VERY generous with grading and allows you to resubmit test & paper many times to improve. 2 campus essay exams, come on, it's an online class man!

Great teacher, I took his online class, 3 tests, 1 paper plus research paper at the end...103 is all about music lyrics and poems and how to analyze them, pretty interesting, held weekly chats, checks/responds to his email EVERY day. Very funny and easy going,i hate english but his appoach made it interesting, gave makeup paper/test helpful

Just finished his summer DE ENG 101 class. His online class is not very organized if you ask me. The DE class is basically one 5pg paper, a 9-14 pg research paper, 1 online "presentation", chat discussions and 2 campus timed essay exams. The class structure sux bad, but Eiland allows you to resubmit assignments and tests many times to improve.

Extremely unorganized online class. If you're good at english, don't bother buying the book. He'll require you to write 2 times essays on campus, and a big paper at the end. I found due dates confusing, his website hard to navigate. He should switch to blackboard. Don't take if you don't excel at english already.

I took Mr Eilands Summer DE 101 class and I'm taking his Fall 103 class. He is challenging, but highly accessible and wise. He allows you plenty of time to complete assignments/tests, and he wants you to ask any and all questions that you may have. He's an excellent professor.

Prof. Eiland is intimidating at first, and, depending on who you are, it may not rub off. That being stated, he is a very very competent english professor who lays it out for you and expects you to do intelligent, thoughtful work. He is a little pretentious but I haven't met a good English teacher who wasn't Get ready to do some of your best work.

This guy is one of the nicest teachers I've ever met. However, the way he grades is beyond annoying. I remember I got C's constantly on every paper. I even went to UCLA to get tutoring and he still gave me C's. If you like being pushed then take this man. If your looking for an easy out this is not the instructor for you.

He is a great teacher. One of the best I have ever had. He is so helpful and allows you to re-do almost all the papers you write and test you take in order to get a better grade. I feel that his on-line class is very ORGANIZED and all layed out for you from day 1 so you don't have any suprise papers or test along the way. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

He is exactly what I expect from a college professor.He does not baby you.you are responsible for doing your work and keeping up with the class and he makes it easy for you to do that. He is funny and real. one of my favorites. Just be careful not to miss out on to many classes (b/c attendance is not mandatory)you WILL fall behind.

I took this class online which makes things a little more difficult, but Eiland is a good teacher. You must attend chats or make posts on all of them for points. My only complaints are there were things he gave me a lower grade than i deserved& didn't explain why. I had like a 89.7% &got a "B". he has awful handwriting it's impossible to understan

I have taken a dozen online classes, including English 100 and 101 and did very well. While he has a very extensive self-created website, it is cluttered with so much information that only leaves you confused. His syllabus is even worse and good luck getting help. Do not take online! He says himself no one gets an A.

Do not ever take his class online. It was way too consufing and even asking him for help, he would say read the website. I dropped the second week because I knew I would fail his class. There were so many different websites and links to go to for all our assignments. I take online classes all the time and have never experience such a hard time.

He's a very good teacher and wants to see everyone succeed. His lectures are okay, but he's not entirely clear and has a very specific teaching style. Those that aren't able to adapt to his style are going to have a difficult time in class. I also think he gives way too many chances to kids who are screwing around or missing too many days.

I really like this teacher, he is very intriguing and engaging that is if you love the subject of English. If writing is not for you this instructor may not be to your liking. You take from this class symbolism , conflict and irony and learn how to apply it to your world. I think Mr. Eiland deserves a pat on the back for helping me see this.

Did not care for this teacher at all. I tried taking his honors 103 class and after 3 weeks dropped. I didn't care much for his teaching style and found it hard to base an English class only around music. His style of teaching and my style of learning did not mesh but he seemed like a nice guy.

Eiland did help me a lot with writing an essay. I liked this class because it was conference style. He would wait to see what level each person was on and help them out with what they needed. He was a little unclear with what he wanted. The class was basically trial and error. Keep up and do the work. Don't buy the book, we used it once.

He is really friendly and laid back. The class revolves around lyrics and different methods of literary interpretation. No HW only a couple of papers and timed papers for tests in which you apply the methods ex. how would a marxist, feminist, and Orthodox Jew interpret Under the Bridge by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Class is all discussion based.

This man is hard as hell. He wants the best out of you, so NO pussycats in his class. Lots of writing and reading, but he's there to help you out. He makes the little lecture he offers very fun. He says things as is, and makes good jokes. Take him if you want to be proud of taking the best English class in our school. I got an A from him, but I had to dedicate 110% to the class.

Excellent teacher, one of the best I have ever had. There is a lot of writing involved but he allows a great deal of flexibility so you are able to write about things that interest you. He does expect a lot out of you, but he is very fair and allows you to re-write papers if you aren't happy with your grade.

best teacher on campus. I have taken several of his classes and all are amazing. classes not mandatory but he makes u want to come. no dull lecture based note taking classes just pure discussion on topic that are interesting. a couple papers which are rewritable for a higher grade. He is amazing but defiantly not easy... bring ur a game.

Best teacher on campus huh? Wow then they haven't had very many teachers. This dude is bazaar, and as long as you have no creative ideas of your own, you will do great. It's his way, or you get a C or lower. Just write as if you are explaining to a 4yo and you should be fine. Try to stay away from his online class too. I hope this HONESTY helps.

Great teacher. If you want to absolutely learn the material, take his class. He's articulate and forces you to think logically, even if his techniques are a bit unorthodox at times. Great teacher but certainly not an easy out.

For 103H, you have to work hard, manage your time, and do a lot of research. This class was pleasantly challenging. If you like analysis already, you'll love the class discussions. Eiland is hilarious and sarcastic. Great professor!

He is the second worst teacher I've taken. His online course is almost impossible. His website sucks, and he has LONG once a week chat sessions. During these chat sessions, he gives essential information, that often contradicts his emails, but is the info he wants you to have. Very hard grader. I loved english and am good at it, but still got a B.

If you are not willing to work hard for a good grade, do not take this class. This class is so hard that it became my main focus of my semester. He's a very good professor though; he is oddly cool, where you can joke around with him.

Eiland has become one of my favorite teachers and someone that I am making attempts to take more classes with. Most people don't find this class easy, but he dedicates a lot of class time to helping you, so there is no excuse for not doing well. He is hilarious and amazingly intelligent. Taking that class made me a better student.

I'm won't lie Eiland is a cool guy. He's very funny and knowledgeable too. However, he is very unclear in the directions he gives. He's a very difficult grader. I did learn a lot but I don't think I'd take another one of his classes. One thing that I didn't like is that he does not take roll. Which sucks if you show up to every class(like I did).

I learned how to be a better writer and analyzer from Eiland's class but he is extremely critical when it comes to grading your work but he does give you chances for revision. Lots of discussions, 2-3 research essays due and exams are written essays you complete in the testing center on campus. He expects a lot but the workload is manageable.

He's a great professor! The class was not that hard to be honest. Just make sure to ace your final paper for this class, and you will avoid taking the final for the class. If you had him for regular English class, the honors class is easier; trust me.

Awesome professor! He is so funny and teaches so well. I took the Learning Community class along with SOC 201. it was great. Every class is a discussion so the readings are essential but fun to read. He grades pretty tough but only because he wants to see improvements.

Different teaching style. Its more of a study group type class. He doesn't actually "teach" anything really. Class time is basically just talking about random topics that kind of go with the class topic. Nice guy but I'm a note taker and he doesn't "teach" in my opinion.

Amazing teacher. Definitely my favorite at Citrus. He is very clear. Most other students who complained about difficulty level were mostly just not trying or had a bad attitude about the style of the class. his class requires effort for sure, and lecture is definitely interesting and engaging, which is most important to me.

Best teacher at Citrus. University caliber. His website is confusing to navigate only at first. You will learn how to analyze concisely and logically here. If all profs were this good, the US would rule education. Opinions about literature may be subjective but writing about them isn't. There are standards to follow and he rules at teaching them.

This was my first online course & it was Winter sem.I was a little overwhelmed at first, so I visited him in his office & he helped me understand everything.He uses an open chat room for questions weekly & responds to all emails in good timing.He has a great personality and passion for what he does. Great professor,I recommend him for this course.

He expects you to navigate his out-dated website (with outdated information) to learn the material. Helpful only when you contact him directly, otherwise you're on your own. He is not direct with his expectations and I personally don't care for his online class. His website is unorganized and difficult. Passed with a good grade though. Good luck.

I took professor Eiland for Fall 2013 and he is by far one of my favorite professors! He helped me learn so much and how to properly write a research paper! I can never read a book the same again! He opened my mind! I loved his class definitely taking him again! His class isn't easy but its worth it you lean so much! I definitely recommend him!

I absolutely loved his online class. He replied to my emails in prompt response and full of information. Whenever I was unclear of an assignment he made sure I was well informed. Also, his chat is very helpful take his class everyone! You wont regret it!!

Eiland was a great professor absolutely loved him! His class seemed intimidating at first but not as long as you pay attention in class and do all of the assignments without procastinating. Always approachable and will answer any questions. He was a funny nice guy and had really chnaged my view of english. I began to really appreicate it.

I would take this class again! Professor Eiland is very helpful and keeps his lectures interesting and informative. The reading assignments were interesting and the class ran the discussion with helpful insight from him on the side. The reading and homework assignments were not overwhelming and he was approachable and answered any questions.

Always get great feed back from the prof. He gives you feed back on your essay/db submissions and allows you a week to re-submit to get better grade. I've taken many online class but Mr. Eiland always take the time to respond and give you feed backs on your work. Put the time and effort to complete your work on time and you will get good grades.

Prof. eiland is amazing! He's very helpful. He has only a few assignments, emails you back in like an hour (which is awesome to me) if you have any questions. He gives awesome feed back as well! Im taking him for sure when I take English 103.

Took his DE ENG103 course. He is incredibly smart and knowledgeable, really knows his stuff. Always responds to emails quickly. Major reason why I wouldn't recommend his DE course is that the website is difficult to follow. "Discussion Board/Responses" are not in order by due date, website/syllabus is all over the place, you have to fish for info.

I learned more about literature in the first week of Professor Eiland's class than in all my other English classes combined. It feels like an upper division course with the depth of analysis for the readings (all student chosen). The class is discussion style and student led with Prof Eiland directing. I would highly recommend this class!!!

This class for sure was not an easy A, especially online. I did summer session with him, AND YOUR BASICALLY ALL ON YOUR OWN. I don't reccomend to take this class if you are unfamiliary w/ symbolism. He is a tough grader, but he allows you to revise your papers and he accepts late work.

Hands down one of the best professors I have ever had at citrus if you want to be lazy and not learn the material its not for you. He does an amazing job at answering any questions you have. Even if you have a small quick question he will answer it. The material he used was very interesting and I really enjoyed and learned a lot in his class!!

He is super knowledgeable. I've taken his class three times (eng 213h, eng 293h, and 291h)and I've never seen him unable to answer a question. Ask him questions! He will help you write your paper and get A's. People fail because they don't write drafts of their paper and get feedback on the days he sets aside purely to work on their paper.

I don't know about in person but ONLINE was a nightmare. Very unclear grading criteria and he has various links in his websites and assignments list that are unhelpful and all over the place. Not a bad professor but my classmates and I just don't understand a single thing about what he wants and how to access all of the things he expects us to use.

I personally think he is a great professor in person, however, for an online course, his format is all over the place. trying to figure out what he wants is difficult for someone who is taking the class out of state without any means of visiting him during his office hours. If you plan on taking his class online, PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD STAY AWAY! He is EASILY one of the worst professors I have ever seen. One sentence is all I need to summarize everyone's experiences with him: you will have more difficulty and invest more time into trying to understand what the hell you're supposed to do than doing the work itself.

Professor Eiland is a great teacher, but holy cow for an online freshman english class this was INTENSE. He allows you to redo majority of the work you send in, which is great, but I really had a hard time understanding what he wanted in my papers. Eiland is best professor I have taken. I have not taken his online course, but I have taken all 4 courses that he offers at Citrus. Every lecture in class will show what he expects from your essays. Every class is open discussion and I found every single class captivating and worth attending. I learned way more from him than anyone else.

Im a 4.0 honors student, English major and Im 99.9% sure this class is going to kill my gpa. Ive always been a great writer and now Im getting Fs?! Makes you use his own website mixed with canvas and its SO confusing. He sends tons of feedback on papers, but it seems like nothing is ever done right. His expectations are unclear. STAY AWAY!

I took his Comp. and Critical Thinking English course. He is a very good professor. His in person class is refreshing and a bit unorthodox. He does rely heavily on his website when it comes to studying materials, but this is only because he likes to focus class time on lectures personal tutoring. Ask questions and you will know how to write.

6 week course - makes the class difficult by default. Lots of writing assignments weekly but gives you choices to pick selected sources . Gives really good feedback on papers, and will also give you the chance to redo assignments for a better grade. If you take the class during the summer/winter, make sure you manage your time.

The type of english professor who believes his way of thinking is the only correct way. Took a 10 second skim of my 4 page essay and told me I did it wrong. Also participating in his class feels like walking a tightrope, he asks a leading queastion, and if you answer wrong he frowns and asks a more enigmatic question to make you feel dumber.

Hes really funny and kinda like a hippie. Gives a quick lecture about a critical perspective and thats it. There was 4 assignments each worth 25% of your grade. I got a C. I disliked every second of this class.

First off, it is not hard to get an A in this class. However, you will have to actually do the work assigned and put in some effort. With that said, Prof Eiland gives very useful feedback on majority of assignments. He let's you revise and resubmit your work for a better grade. 5 assignments (1 a wk), 2 papers and 1 test. Great professor, 5 stars!

I liked him as a person but not as a teacher. He made me feel dumb when I'd ask for help and in the end I still didn't understand what he was saying. He basically talks too much without really telling me what I need to do. His papers are really hard because he doesn't hand out rubrics. Had to withdrawal from his class :(

He bases essays off of different perspectives that you have to follow etc. Marxist. He is super picky with papers and is very close minded. If you are trying to write a paper he gives you many chances to fix it but unless you understand him and how his mindset is then you will not get a good grade.

Professor Eiland was tough at first but it was necessary to emphasize the correct writing style expected for an English 103 course. Once you figure out the correct flow and style, the class is very easy to go along with it. It did help me become a better writer and he was very fair and transparent while grading.

Professor is pretty tough, but if you really make an effort to actually doing your work you will be fine. He allows you to resubmit your work after his review, I actually re-summited 90% of my work. It allows you to understand what he is looking for in your writing. It definitely took a couple of tries to understand.

The online 103 class was very unclear and unorganized. If you see his personal website and it makes you want to drop, I would advise to do that as early as possible- me too. Once ur behind its extremely hard to catch back up. He's very picky with grading and his corrections on papers can be longer than your paper itself. Good luck, you'll need it

Professor Eiland is looking for very specific things in his papers. He is a tough grader, but allows for rewrites on all of your work and his feedback is quite detailed. Show up to office hours for help and you'll do well as long as you do the work... but be prepared to be put in the hot seat when he questions you about the story you are analyzing!

Super insightful, he genuinely changed the way I view books, and art in general. Highly recommend his classes. His papers were also super laid back and self guided, meaning you could do what you were passionate about. He just wants to be able to analyze and explain films using ones the class chooses, because he can teach you with any movie.

Professor Eiland is a really tough grader, and the workload is a lot. His website is all over the place and super unorganized, making it hard to keep track of everything. He gives feedback, but honestly, it still feels confusing. I ended up withdrawing because I knew I wouldn't pass with an A. Do not take online or in 8 weeks.

Run. Don't take his class. All directions for any assignment aren't posted on the assignment and you have to go through his website to figure it out. Extremely hard grader and doesn't respond to emails or messages through canvas. I ended up dropping because I wasn't going to get a grade I would've been proud of for how much work I had to do.

The time I took this course was only offered online so i took it expecting it to be easy in spring but It was not. I decided to get more help by contacting the professor and went to office hours. Lectures are long and cover the same thing every time. You do 4 lengthy homework short essays that were low-key difficult if you suck at English, and throughout the whole semester, we worked on our 8-page final. Going in person for help definitely helps, but if you procrastinate like I did, you'll fall behind quickly and become overly stressed.

DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! Only took it because I registered late, it was my only option. If I knew how bad of a teacher/class this would be I would NEVER in my life consider it. Hard Class. Probably hardest I've ever taken at a CC, which is ironic bc this is ENGLISH!!! Instructions never made sense the Final Paper submission details had said "On Paper" So I spent my time rewriting it on paper for hours... Just for him to tell me it needed to be sent as a pdf. No accountability for his mistake and clearly did not feel bad.

Be reasonable with yourself: are you willing to iterate over and over, or do you want an easy grade? He's a good enough guy and will give you honest opinions and advice if asked, but the bulk of the work largely remains up to you.
