Best professor I have ever had. Soooo hot, sooo helpful and intelligent. Very funny. I learned a lot in the class
Great class, this guy is funny, and the tests are easy.
Even is such a great teacher...he made coming to class something to look forward to...which is very rare for most pro.fessors
It is professors like this that make me love Biology! Very interesting class and uses visuals to help explain! You will love this class, I did! Great Professor!!!!
Class was extremely easy and fun. Lectures were helpful and entertaining and be sure to go becuase 80% of the exams are on lectures.
Bio is my favorite and Prof. Even just added to my love for it! Its my favorite class this quarter, he is always making jokes and playing music before class. I like all of his personal stories he throughs in for emphasis!
Great prof, hott, funny, easy going. Only went to class to sit in the front to stare at him. Learned a lot.
awesome
Great guy, great class, and I actually enjoyed science even though I usually steer clear of it. I highly recommend this class and especially this professor...very hot too.
This professor knows how to teach a lecture hall and still make you feel like he is talking to you. He does this both by telling personal stories of his adventures in the field and by bringing in examples be they overhead representations or real.
Best teacher I ever had. His lectures are fun and interesting. His class made me want to take more biology classes.
awesome teacher! hate bio, but loved this class. really straightforward and the tests are easy if you study for atleast an hour before
Very interesting class. Quite easy. Very clear on what's on the mid-terms and finals. Easy to get along with. Overall enjoyed the class.
Great professor! Tests were fairly easy. Give away extra points! Overall great personality...relates to students well and always has something funny or interesting to say. Makes you feel like hes a more of a friend than a teacher. Not too bad looking either! I highly recommend him!
God he is so hot
He is the best professor that I have had so far. Lectures are interesting and full of info, not boring like the second prof for this class. If you get the chance TAKE HIS CLASSES!
Best class ever if you want an easy A. Dr. Even is exceptionally brilliant and a class act. I loved his class and he really cares for his students. He is very charming, wonderful, and HOT (it's just domething about him). Overall, Dr. Even is a wonderful professor. Take his classes!!!
I want to have his babies
easy, funny, clear. very good professor-teaching is his gift
This guy is so funny , Some of the funniest **** has happen to him. His tests consists of 1/2 the reading and 1/2 lecture. I want to take another class with him but he is not teaching anything else. If you get a chance take this class,or justcrash one of his lecture for the entertainment.
OMG! best klass i have taken thus far!!! his klass is SO fun, VERY entertaining and actually makes Bio really fun! He tells you Exactly whats going to be on the test so if you study for a while then you'll surely get an A! Oh yah, and i forgot to mention...he's HOT! I HIGHLY recommend his klass! :)!
Dr. Even is one of the most thorough and conscientious instructors I have ever encountered. His teaching style is not only effective, but inspirational. Teaching is not only his gift, but also his passion. An added bonus is that he is one of the most charming and handsome men you will ever meet.
I LOVE HIM SO MUCH!!! He's such a great lecturer & person altogether. He always tells us hilarious stories and his midterm was really easy (I got an A and studied for about an hour and a half). He's the best professor I've ever had. He's also really cute, almost in a nerdy but charming way.
Great professor. Loved the class. Bummed to find out he's married with 2 kids.
Even is cocky and not attractive at all. He is obsessive compulsive which is good at time and a pain in the ass at other times. His lectures aren't very interesting and he says some pretty inappropriate things. I wouldn't reccomend this class.
Definately recommend this class. Lectures are sooo much fun and he always adds in personal and funny stories to spice up the lectures. Tests are the most well written (it's not a BS test and it really does test to see what you know). I wish I could take more classes w/ him... he's great. :O)
What the heck was that person talking about (05/16)? I cannot remember one time he was cocky or uninteresting at all. His lectures are exactly what is on the midterms. You don't even have to study much to get an A. He is such a great professor. One of the best. You don't have need much of a biology background to take this class. Highly recommended!
while doing his evaluation today, i could not find any reasons to give him less than "excellent" for ANYTHING. great professor!!!
I love him! Easy class, and he really does have a gift for teaching! He really cares about students and wants them all to do well; he really wants us to learn the material.
His name is not TJ, it's Thomas (in case you look for him on a catalog). He is the best professor I have ever had in 3 years. His tests are exactly what he says they'll be. And they're super easy if you study and go to lectures. On top of that, he's not dull or boring, very funny and brings the lectures to life. TAKE THIS CLASS HE'S GREAT!
He is hilarious!!!
I LOVE HIM
He is SO awesome! He made Bio Interesting with all his examples and throwing vegetables at us! HAHA!
He made lectures fun and interesting. He has a sense of humor and isn't bad to look at!! :)
so interesting. He was able to relate the information to everyday life. Class was good and so was the professor. I read the entire reader because it was so interesting!! And he is hot.
There's a lot of material but he has slides online and is really clear about what he's going to test on so it makes it easy to study.
best ever
Best teacher I have ever had! I absolutely adore him.
great lecturer. very interesting and funny. really laid back and easy to talk to.
BEST science/bio professor out there, PERIOD.
Hilarious! Also makes things very clear. Great professor!
well...being that i am my stupidest in science, this class was so hard. so hard to the point where that i am retaking it to get rid of my F. yeah, if you sucked at bio in high school, do not take this class. it's not "easy bio" like my friend told me, it's just "easier" than what the bio majors take. still way hard. however, he is a cool teacher.
awesome
best bio professor on campus
Great professor! Go to class and you dont have to read anything. He gives you the exact pages to read and focus on. Review last years midterm (if you know some one who has had him). Its very similiar. DR EVEN ROCKS!
great prof! tells great stories and class is pretty easy if u go to lecture
loved him
BEST Biology teacher ever, I was dreading taking this class because I am not a science person and it ended up being my favorite class of the quarter and he is one of the best teachers i have ever had, I highly recommend this class, perfect for the GE requirement
This prof. and class was awesome! It not only is interesting, but it is easy and fun too! He is hilarious and tells priceless stories so you should definitely go to class. The book is pointless to read but you should read the reader (which is interesting anyway). Highly recommended!
Usually it's hard for me to actually attend EVERY lecture of a class, but it was not the case for EEMB2/ 3. Prof. Even IS defintely one of the best professors i've had here in UCSB. Not only does he make class fun, his style of teaching actually helps you retain some of the dry materials needed to be taught. Take him and you won't regret it. :)
Even is an amazing professor. He makes biology, even the branches of biology that I originally had no interest in, seem so much more fascinating. He makes the subject matter come alive. I came away from each of his lectures feeling that I had learned a lot and had spent my time well.
Not at all interested in taking this class, but quickly became my favorite class. He keeps you interested in the lectures and makes it entertaining. Can't really ask more from a professor. You don't need the book. Study the slides and the test will be simple. Awesome professor: teaches you the material in a bearable manner. I highly recommend it.
Simply amazing. I actually considered changing my major to ecology because of this guy. He makes what is normally dry, seeminging pointless material sound interesting and important. One of my favorite profs ever
Even is the sh***. He gets paid as a lecturer, not a researcher so he can actually teach... unlike some of the professors here. He's really entertaining, FUNNY, nice, and a great guy overall! He can be teaching a class on the biology of dirt and it'd be interesting! He'll be one of your faves in the bio series, i gaurantee it.
Everything on the test comes from the slides. One of the best teachers at UCSB i've taken thus far. he's very entertaining, so it's easy to stay awake. don't read the text. he tells you that you don't have to read it, it's only to suppliment the material. just pretty much memorize the slides!
so funny! he is a great professor and the midterm was super fair
This teacher is the best teacher UCSB has by far...you actually have fun in this class, stay awake, and learn. This class is the full package all you have to do is go to the lecture imean c'mon the discussion class is harder than the lecture....piece of apple pie!
Dr. Even makes the class fun to attend. Is also really funny.
Professor Even is one of the best teachers at this school. He is so much fun. Makes the class fun and interesting and really easy to get. I loved the class.
The best teacher I've ever had. He is hilarious! At times I forgot whether I had stepped into a college ecology class or a stand up comedy routine. I actually looked forward to going to class.
By far the best professor I've had in my academic career. I am not a science person by any means and he really brings the course to life. He is clear, without being condescending, and his lectures were always fun and interesting. This was my only class on Fridays and I went every week out of sheer love for the class.
He's a great lecturer. Not only is he hilarious, but he has the oh so rare gift of actually being able to teach. And he looks like Kevin Spacey- SHWING!
prof. even is awesome. he's really funny and cool and a great lecturer. he really explains the material well that is why you should attend lecture. he does put the slides online but its much easier to understand when he explains it. definitely take a class from him
He is charismatic which is probably why people like him. This course is divided into three sections with three professors and he teaches the last part. His portion is of the class is just memorization. He covers more information in a lecture or two than either of the previous professors covered during their section of the class.
Mostly memorization. He tries to emphasize form and function but he gives lots of vocab words that he doesn't explain and you just have to memorize what animals they correspond to. Also has a tendency to present evolution as a linear trend even though he consistently emphasizes that evolution is nonlinear. At least he speaks clearly.
He's an okay professor. nice. just look at his slides. and how can people think he's hot??? that's so gross
clear professor, made the class interesting with good examples
Even is awesome! One of the best professors in the department! Super charismatic and likable and presented material very clearly. One of the few professor's whose teaching style really grasped my attention.
Professor Even is the best professor I've had thus far at UCSB! He is extremely passionate about what he's teaching. He's very likable and presents the material in a straightforward way. His tests make you apply what you learned but he really helps you prepare for them. He made ecology so interesting!
Prof Evens is my favorite professor I've had so far at UCSB..I am not a bio major and I only took this class for area C, but he is amazing and the class is extremely interesting! If you attend lecture and study, you will succeed on his tests. Barely have to read textbook. A must-take class!!!
I'm a non-major and I tend to hate science, but he made me love it at lease for the quarter. He makes everything SUPER interesting. Two midterms + one final is cumulative and mostly from lecture, you only use the textbook for vocab words. I'd HIGHLY recommend taking him.
GREAT TEACHER. really cares about the students and not just his/her research. really tried to help us and wanted us to succeed. very clear even when material got a little tricky.
I LOVED this class! The information is extremely interesting and I don't even like biology! Print out his lecture notes before class and take notes on that- it's a lot easier. You don't even have to read, just know the definitions from the book and you're good! Not going to lie, getting A's on the test are not easy but it's definitely worth taking!
Even is extremely clear of his expectations, but Tropical Ecology is not easy! The tests are incredibly detailed and they will take points off for the tiniest nuances. However he is very reasonable and understanding if you try to get help and do well. Great professor.
Very clear teacher. Start memorizing slides/phyla as soon as you start learning them. Memorization is the key to this class
All I have to say is wow. Even is one of the best teachers I have had at UCSB so far and has made me so interested in the field of ecology. I really didn't think I was interested at all before. Thank you Dr. Even for making the first half of EEMB 2 so enjoayable. He is the best lecturer and I would love to have him again.
Professor Even is awesome. His lecturing style is incredibly clear and concise and he always seems interested in whatever he is saying. Great, great professor.
Superb lecturer. Even makes ecology a fun subject to learn. Ecology as a science is rather conceptual in nature, but also very intuitive. Test wasn't too bad, considering the average was a C. Highly recommend taking a course with him.
This man was totally awesome. His class got me totally interested and convinced me to major in Ecology and Evolution.
Best teacher I have so far. Made class interesting and excting, as well as straight forward. A great class if you dont have a lot of interest or knowledge about science and need the GE. Highly recommend the class! Dr. Even for prez!
Fantastic Professor... Mostly basic stuff and you can get away with not attending lecture but I highly recommend going- its totally worth it. ES majors should take it for sure- easy A
FAVORITE class at UCSB so far!!! Evens is so interesting, he brings in his own experiences and extensive knowledge!!! I didn't understand what he wanted on his tests so I didn't do as well as I hoped, but this didn't tarnish my love for this class! Read the textbook, but he doesn't test you on it, even if he says he does. Study lectures!
I absolutely LOVED this class. Even does a great job of giving an in depth overview of a wide range of topics. You can tell that he knows his stuff and is excited to share it with you. He requires a lot of retained information on the tests but they are straight forward and he never tests you on the random facts. Best class at UCSB by far!
Dr. Even was very knowledgeable and I really enjoyed taking this class. He made the lectures fun and interesting. I'm not really into science, but I really loved his biology class. I would definitely recommend it!!
This guy is gold. Teaching is his niche in life. By far the best professor here at UCSB (at least in terms of biology). It is very rare to experience this level of absolute mind-blowing teaching ability. 5/5. Please take a class with this guy. You will learn lots, not be stressed about grading policies, and enjoy the life applicable material.
I LOVED this professor!! He's both an amazing teacher and is hilarious. He makes the subject so interesting. i never missed a class
I always thought Ecology was stupid until I took his class. Oh my god i really feel like I see the world differently now- this guy is amazing- and he's pretty easy so TAKE HIM
Professor Even is one of the best lecturers I've had at UCSB. Even if you're not interested in the subject, his lectures and his style of teaching will keep your attention. I took this class during summer, and the tests were pretty comprehensive. As long as you actually pay attention and study well, you'll do good on the tests
Professor Even is absolutely incredible! I absolutely loved his class! He is very straight to the point for tests and makes class so interesting. By far the best class Ive taken at UCSB. If you need a science credit for GEs or if its one of your options for your major, take this class!
TAKE THIS CLASS! I've never been a huge biology fan but this class was life-changing. Professor Even is articulate, clear, and breaks down the trickier topics into easy to understand concepts. Always adds little anecdotes to the curriculum which make you remember it on the tests. Lecture slides online. Extra credit on Fridays!
This was one of my favorite classes. The professor is very smart and very clear in his lectures and makes class interesting. I hate science but this class made it really fun and easy to learn. As long as you study the lecture slides which are all online you'll get an A in the class.
If you haven't taken a class with Dr. Even you should. He is every EEMB majors dream professor. Great lectures, approachable, caring, and a reasonable grader. He is one of the few professors who chose the teaching route instead of research. Also, he is department cochair so get an A and letter of rec. Stream ecology was a great class.
Even is THE BEST professor I have ever had. He is incredible for upper divs; he made freshwater ecology so interesting! His tests make you memorize info but you also have to synthesize answers and do problem solving, so you need to really understand the material. Don't buy the book! Go to lecture, slides aren't comprehensive (he adds on info).
Dr Even is fantastic. you should really take his class
Greatest professor you will have in the bio department.
Out of all the professors that Bio majors usually have during Winter Quarter, Even will by far be the easiest and best one you will have. He's a great guy, his lecture slides are clear, and the exam was fair. Don't put off studying until the last minute though, his tests are not a walk in the park.
I can't Even.. Oh wait yes I can! Even is the best
His lectures are extremely clear and interesting. He can be amusing at times. His midterm is moderate in difficulty. He provides alot of help with his computation sets and iclicker questions.
Best professor I've ever had by far, best class I've taken in college thus far. He's incredibly knowledgable, passionate, and explains everything very clearly. He tells you exactly what to expect and never tries to trick on tests. The lectures are super interesting and he's really funny and charismatic so you're captivated the entire time.
He was awesome! He made the class even more interesting than it already was. His enthusiasm sparks a wonderful desire to learn. I loved him as a lecturer and can't wait to take a class with him again.
Awesome professor who tries really hard and wants his students to succeed. Go to class and print the slides and write down anything additional he says. Go to class and you will pass. Tests make you think critically and apply concepts but he prepares you well. Great professor overall.
Dr. Even is the best teacher I have ever had. Lectures were so funny and interesting even though I didn't even like the subject matter. He made me appreciate ecology more. Tests were very fair - if you went to class and studied a little you'd get an easy A. If you have a chance to be in Dr. Even's class do it!
Even is the best biology professor I've had at UCSB. He really cares about his students and gives us all the tools we need to succeed in his class. He makes lectures interesting by giving real-life examples and fun facts. At the beginning of every lecture he does a review about previous material, which is really helpful. Take his class!!
I loved him soooo much. Dr. Even is exactly why i went to college. I will be taking his upper divisions if not just to hear his jokes. 3 wish they were all this great.
Great Professor! He makes an otherwise boring topic interesting and while attendance is not mandatory, you want to go. His test was tricky but if you go to class and actually study it should not be that difficult.
Dr. Even is an amazing lecturer and is extremely easy to understand. He is funny and genuinely invokes your interest in the subject matter. Although ecology was a little boring (to me) I listened and studied and got an A. Just put in the effort, go to class, and you'll get an A too.
Incredible professor. Really cares about teaching and very enthusiastic and funny. Know examples presented in class well and concepts and you will do well. It is not so much about memorizing as it is understanding concepts. Uses life examples and different contexts for test questions. Loved this class so much!!
I LOVE Dr. Even! Due to unfortunate life events I got a D in the class. I couldn't really study. HOWEVER, I can confidently say that Dr. Even is the best professor you will take here at UCSB.(That might be a little biased but IDGAF) He is the type of professor you go to a University for. He is extremely caring, a fair tester and a simply amazing!!!
Real cool guy, he delivers his material straight to the point, and constantly requires the class to repeat shout out what he just taught as he goes along. Attendance is important because all test material comes from there. Book is not necessary. Tests are multi choice and short response. Def recommend!
Many students underestimate ecology because EEMB classes are stereo-typically easier than MCDB. Many pre-med students take this class and end up getting B's and C's because of this underestimation. To get an A, you must attend lecture and understand fundamental concepts behind the biological and physical characteristics that Even presents in class.
Wish he could teach every class, simply amazing professor.
He makes lectures so enjoyable. He can be a little intimidating, but it just makes listening to lectures easier!
Even is one of the best lecturer's in the EEMB/MCDB departments. He makes seemingly dull subjects interesting, and is the most engaging lecturer I have had. Attendance is mandatory in his class as he explains most concepts verbally and does not write a lot on his slides that he tests on.
He made even the most boring material seem interesting. I would highly recommend going to lecture; he is very good at explaining things that may not be clear on the lecture slides. The book isn't necessary; everything you need to know is learned in lecture.
Amazing professor, really cares about how he presents himself. He doesnt just read off of the lecture slides, he engages, and constantly reviews things before beginning the new lecture. Honestly considered switching to ecology just so I could have him as a professor again.
Although this was not my favorite subject in the intro Bio series, Evens made this class a lot more interesting. His lectures weren't boring and he was one of my favorite professors so far!
Professor Even has been one of my favorite teachers at UCSB. His lectures are amazing (and all are recorded). The test was hard, though.
I'm a stats major with interest in environmental studies and bio applications of stats, Took his online EEMB 22 class (EEMB W 22), wouldn't do it any other way. The readings are amazing and the discussion is thought provoking. Recorded lectures are great. He was really animated and helpful in office hours.
One of my favorite professors, the intro bio series was very challenging but the portion of it that he taught made me love EEMB. Gives very good real world examples and his midterm was very clear. Looooved this class. Go to lecture & take good notes and it's easy to succeed
awesome online class to take spring quarter. the recorded lectures are very interesting and he keeps it intriguing with cool examples. Readings for the quiz can be kind of long but the topics are all cool, you can look at them while taking the online quiz. Use the study guides/take notes and the tests will be very easy!
Even though I had to retake this class (note: please do NOT underestimate the class), I don't mind because Dr. Even is an amazing lecturer. He really likes to engage with the class and makes the topics more interesting. He tests from the slides but you really have to understand the concepts in order to know the examples.
This guy is a dope professor. Even though this class is a mandatory prereq, it could have been way worse if it was taught by anybody else. His lectures are super entertaining. Kind of a bummer he only teaches half of the class.
An amazing professor. I found his lectures to be pretty interesting, and he definitely made the class more enjoyable. Make sure to pay attention during lecture and really understand how to apply the concepts you learn in class (specific examples, visualize the data).
Love him. Such a great lecturer. Tests not that hard but you definitely need to study. Never used the textbook, just rewatched the lectures posted online and took notes.
Dr. Even is the best biology professor I've had at UCSB! He has a lot of passion in the subject matter and it shows in his lectures. His powerpoints do not have much info on them and he gives most of the details in class. His exams are pretty long (5 pages mostly short answer) but doable. I highly recommend you take any of his classes.
Dr. Even is THE BEST PROFESSOR. He is extremely enthusiastic about his subject specialty and makes lectures a joy to come to. He sets you up for SUCCESS. Everything he puts in his powerpoints are crucial to know. I wish every professor was like him. Go to CLAS tutoring! *beware... do well on his portion of the class because Dr. Rice is a menace*
He's really knowledgable about the subject and has a passion for teaching. He talks more indepth in lecture than just off the slides so go to lecture if you want to do well. Although his exam questions ask for way too much imo and I barely finish in time & my hand is dead afterwards. He wants everyone to do well so class and really cares about you.
A true gem of a professor. He made EEMB a breeze, and his lectures were the most entertaining I have seen at UCSB. Incredible professor who clearly takes time and effort into pushing his students in the right direction. His stories were memorable, and helps my recall of the class even after I no longer need most of the material.
Even is a very straightforward lecturer, and I like how he reviews the previous lecture's concepts at the start of every lesson. He likes to do iClicker questions to help you review the computational problems. Gives lots of examples/experiments about the ecology concepts. Exams are not hard, very to the point.
Hes a really good professor, but its really easy to put EEMB on the back burner for MCDB. Stay on top of both, go to clas to prevent you from cramming. Tests should be straightforward as long as you stay on top of it. Iclickers arent graded and he reviews material in the first 15 min of lecture. Also tells you what to expect on the test
Professor Even is very clear in his lectures. He is one of the only professors I've had that seems like he really wants his students to understand the material that he covers. As long as you do the computation sets and memorize formulas you will do well on the exam.
Even is one of the best professors at UCSB and one of two faculty in the EEMB department that is not research based, his primary focus is teaching not research which is rare. Grading is mostly based on tests which are challenging but fair. He uses everything from matching to hypothetical free response to test understanding rather than memorization
Even is a great professor and lecturer that really cares about the students and their academic success. But it is really important to attend his lectures because his slides do not contain all the information needed for the exam so be prepared to take good notes. Also, make use of his office hours and review session before finals.
good lecturer, horrible test. I don't know why people keep saying easy A and straightforward. The test is wordrd weird and score is unexpeted low. The content is very easy, buf the test is definetly unfair. 25 out of 1000 students get 90+, and there is only little curve according to his email. very disappointed about test, I like the content tho.
What the heck. Super hard test with only 1-2 points of curve. It is my first time to do late drop because I cannot tolerate a B on my transcript :)
1 star for great lectures, but screwed us over on the test. 75 minutes for 50 long, badly worded questions. Says he wants us to apply concepts and not memorize; test didnt reflect that. You WILL need to memorize experiments and definitions, he WILL test on material he didnt cover. Practice problems DONT reflect the test. 70% average, no curve
Awesome professor. His lecture style is attractive, and office hour is also helpful.
You should absolutely be putting effort into remembering and understanding the concepts. Most people get Bs and about the top 20 students get As out of approx. 120 people. The material will change the way you look at streams when you go hiking or are out in nature.
Dr Even is one of my favorite profs at UCSB. Even though the quarter was online I felt I still received a UC quality class and experience. His lectures were engaging (even on zoom), and it is clear that he cares about his students. I recommend listening to what he says in lecture (dont just memorize slides, learn the concepts) to get a higher grade
You will not find a better Professor than this man. Although I took this class online, Dr. Even's lectures were the same quality as it would be in person. I always looked forward to going to his lectures, as they were very interactive. You can tell that he's extremely passionate about teaching and not just doing it because he has to.
This box isn't long enough to do Even justice. His Zoom lectures were more engaging than 95% of my in-person ones. He's a professor who focuses on teaching and works in science education. It shows. Every professor knows his subject but Even knows how to teach it. The material is hard, but you don't notice because he's so good at teaching it to you.
im not sure why anyone would reccommend this professor but go figure. he's the worst kind of professor out there. The test are all FREE RESPONSE and you have to memorize word for word what is on the lecture slides or forget it. He proctors the class on top of that. guys just stay away from this professor.
Lectures are super clear and high quality. Professor is very entertaining and topics are easy to understand.
Graded on a midterm and a final each worth 50% of the class. Each lecture was available live during class or recorded after however the live section consisted of the same 3-4 students answering every ? The tests were worded weird but the prof was deadset that there were no errors and would not offer any corrections after the exams. Likes ProctorU
He's an extremely straight forward professor. He tells you what is going to be on the test. The material was interesting and easy to grasp with some time. The class is memorization heavy, but if you put in the work you will get an A. He monitors his tests through Zoom.
Solid material. Things were clearly given. However, he is the only professor I have had during the Pandemic that has enforced ProctorU. It is unfair to a lot of students with varying environments. Also, he is not understanding when it comes to outside difficulties and basically says, "my decision is final and it is up to you on how you take that."
Doesnt let you review the tests, spends ton of time during lecture justifying why EEMB is a good field of study, his pass rates will tell you all you need to know
Firstly, the content he teaches is incredibly easy, yet the exams feel more like an assessment of your reading comprehension. He reuses questions so you cant review the exam(which is incredibly lazy) and the exam itself had a multitude of answers and vague wording that he justified rudely using a dictionary definition. Least favorite prof at UCSB.
Not bad, but doesn't deserve a rating this high. He explains things clearly, but focuses on basic stuff, so its hard to get left behind, but there is not much meat for more advanced students. Also he is convinced his tests test "understanding" not rote knowledge, but to get good marks you legit have to basically memorize his explanations of things
Even has very engaging lectures and teaches the concepts clearly with lots of examples. His exam was much more difficult than expected/seemed to try to trick students though. Went to his OH once and he made a fool of students who participated and were wrong... scary. Course itself: problem sets, his ecology exam, and Latto's evolution exam.
Let me start by saying, Even isn't bad by any means. He's just not the best. His lectures are, for the most part, average and engaging, but the tests can and probably will trip you up. I'm an EEMB major and I got a C on the midterm, the only thing that saved me was Latto's final. I think he cares, his tests are just a little wonky. He's average.
Class graded on 2 midterm, 1 final, and discussion section. Dr Even likes to say his exams test your understanding of how material connects together but got my best score when I memorized slides and what he said. The TA's grade harshly since you need to write exactly what they're looking for otherwise your answer is worth nothing. Still a fun class
I enjoy how he runs his classes, asking (nonrhetorical!) questions to keep us on our toes and constantly reviewing the older material. His lectures are well organized and he makes it feel like ur really learning scientific tools. Didn't appreciate his tone with students that give wrong answers,+ Noted misunderstanding of international students
Dr. Even is a REALLY good professor. He dedicates time to understanding how he should teach students, and what works best for them. His lectures during the online formate were the most engaging I have experienced so far. I had him in person for EEMB2, and online for EEMB159, and he was great both times. 1 midterm, final, and section work.
He's a good lecturer which is his main strength. His lectures are well structured and easy to follow. That said his tests suck. Doesn't communicate well with students on expectations for tests OR assignments which constitute 100% of the grade. At the end of the day it's useless for students to learn the material well just to be set up for failure
His classes are frustrating. I've taken a few of them. He does a good job of getting students to understand the material but doesn't do a good job of testing this knowledge. TA's are unreasonably harsh graders considering the vagueness of his assignments and sometimes the test questions as well.
Dr. Even makes you work for your grade. His tests are mostly essays with some matching and fill in the blank. He mostly tests based on how well you understand the material rather than memorization. Write detailed notes for the full story, some of the stuff he says isn't always in his lecture slides. Funny and engaging lectures though (EEMB 159 too)
Really interesting class, lots of relevant conversation during section. Science is a bit harder for me personally so I just P/NP'ed it. Good for taking care of a GE. I'm not big on math and science courses, but this was a really good choice! The online setup is well done, left me time for other courses, but midterm and final definitely take work,
Professor Even's lectures are the best in UCSB for me. He does know every concept of biology and how they related to real life examples. Essays and quizzes take up 1/3 of the grade, and quizzes related to readings are really tricky and hard. Midterm and final take up 2/3 of the grade, and they are hard but follow the exam guide you will be okay.
His tests are unreasonably hard no matter how much he says he tells you "everything to expect". He's really funny and intelligent, but when the class average on tests are 60, he then blames the students. Grade distribution is also super weird with a ton of A's and a ton of D's, blind-sighting both groups. And again, he blames the students.
I took the EEMB W 22. You just have to watch all the recorded lectures on GS, do weekly assignments, and midterm and final test. The lectures are pretty solid. The weekly assignments are interesting but includes a lot of readings. The midterm and finals are MCQ, and asks detailed and tough questions.
Prof. Even gives pretty engaging lectures and clearly cares about his field. His midterm is very easy if you watch lecture and understand the problem sets. Never went to office hours or did CLAS, and got an 80 on first midterm.
Dr. Even was a great instructor. His lectures/problem sets contain essentially all the detail students need for the exam and the textbook is an extra resource. Use his office hours/Q&A forum before the exam. He is accessible outside class for help/study tips by email/zoom. Find good study techniques EARLY. His exam covers many topics so CLAS helps.
Dr. Even makes the lectures highly interactive by letting everyone to watch the pre-recorded videos first and do discussions in lecture. This guy gave very fair exams. Everybody in my study group got a 90+% in the first exam. Just attend his lectures, go to CLAS, and discuss in group weekly. Then you can do an amazing job.
Professor Even is great! He's nice and makes lectures interesting. The way he formats his class makes sense, even though it can seem like a lot of work at times. I wish that this class was more about controversial issues like it is supposed to be and less about basic biology though. We would only spend like 1 day talking about controversies.
funny and nice guy who shows interest in the subject but also in the success of his students. He sometimes would tell stories and they almost felt like they were life lessons. his test were pretty straight forward if you really get to know the material you will get an A
I really enjoyed Dr. Even's portion of EEMB 2; his lectures are content heavy but they're super interesting and he provided a lot of opportunities to review the material. The exam was hard, but I don't think it was unreasonably difficult. He was especially accommodating due to his part of the class being online, and I really appreciated that.
Nothing to study, horrible long boring lectures, not funny at all, doesn't follow the text well, disorganized, does not prepare students, grade 100% dependent on exams, useless lectures, grade up to luck, one of the worst people I had the misfortune of listening to.
Even's portion was great. Extremely lecture heavy, but follow along with the lecture and you'll do great. I goofed the first test bad and paid the price with it on my grade, but his test was super manageable and fair. He is accessible in office hours and had great encouragement and confidence boosting by helping you with what you need.
I got mixed feelings about Dr. Even. On one hand he's incredibly passionate about teaching and it rlly shows in his lectures. On top of that it is apparent that he truly cares about his students and is capable of the utmost compassion. One tip: Dr. Even constantly emphasizes not memorizing and going for a more conceptual studying style but MEMORIZE
I took his class online over a summer session and thought that he was a very good lecturer. Lectures were interesting and engaging and he made it very clear what we needed to know for exams. Tests were online, so I think that it would be harder if they were in person, but overall he is a great professor and cares that you know the material.
he is such an amazing lecturer and his classes are so engaging! attendance not required (aside from section) since lectures were recorded, but lectures are so interactive and he does a mini review session at the start of each one that is not always recorded that contains basically everything on the exams. unironically the best prof at UCSB.
Prof Even is extremely organized and the material is really easy to cover in your own time. His lectures are really entertaining. Material is not hard if you took science classes in HS. Tests are very reasonable. I didn't have to read the book to do well. Great Area C for a Humanities Student!!!!
this class was not enjoyable for me as a gen bio major who isn't invested in aquatic communities at all. but that being said, i think the exams get easier when you pay attention to the hints given in the review sessions. i got kinda reamed but it got better once i adjusted to the exam style. prepare to memorize details yet apply concepts.
Havent even talked his midterm yet but literally just wanted to say hes best lecturer ive ever had this school by far and maybe throughout all of my education my entire life. Dude is so into and understands what he is teaching so well its so interesting
Professor Even is awesome!! His lectures were clear and he explained everything so well. He is obviously very passionate about his work. His exam was online but still challenging so preparing is definitely still necessary. However, if you study, you'll be totally fine.
Dr. Even is just amazing. His style of teaching is unmatched and is probably the most informative and engaging way for students to learn. His midterms are extremely fair and considering the means for both midterms were above 80%, you can tell his teaching is effective and grading is fair. love him and his bald head.
His lectures are very detailed and easy to understand. The way he formats the class though feels like it can be a lot of work sometimes, and the time limit for quizzes and the tests can be intimidating. There are quite a few things due each week but it wasn't bad. His exams are hard but if you study and really understand, you should be fine!
Professor Even's lectures are engaging and he clearly cares about his students' success. Prepping with unstuckstudy and the free textbook should help you ace his challenging but fair exams.
Really enjoyed his lectures! Fun class, but definitely have to study. Tests make up the vast majority of the grade.
Visually and systematically well-formatted for online, but content deviates heavily from neutrality to partisanship. This course aims to set a platform to indoctrinate rather than educate, discouraging academic exploration or open discussions on complex topics.Students are forced to align answers with course agenda on linguistically confusing tests.
It's ok, he likes to rant a lot and go off topic in lecture. The lectures are twice as long as they need to because of this.Exams are hard and will trick you, but gives a good amount of time for it. lot of discussion is different topics and the readings come from news articles so I get confused how to connect it to the lectures slides.
great professor…. If I was bald like him. his tests are way too long. the final was near 100 questions. he tries to be cool by making jokes in video modules we have to watch but he tries too hard and just adds to the time of the videos to make it seem like we are learning. i spend only like 2 mins writing notes out of the 30 mins when he talks blah
The first half of this class has a different professor, Dr. Even jokes and kind of rambles then loads a lot of vocabulary quickly in lectures. Tests used lecture concepts but also had to understand specifics a person could google for vocabulary matching questions
While this course is test heavy with 90% of your grade relying on two multiple choice, online tests, the course is still enjoyable. The first test was on ecology (I got a 78%), and the final was on evolution (I got an 89%). Class averages were high so there was minimal rounding. He tells you exactly what to expect on tests (45 questions each)
He's an amazing lecturer, his tests are awful. I took him in the summer, and the class itself was amazing and he makes learning information fun. Dude his tests tho... They were full of synthesis questions, which really makes you learn the material, the issue was THERE WAS TOO MUCH. Fun class and great prof, but oh god
He is a very good lecturer and makes students participate in the lecture, which is very helpful. The only reason I am not giving him a 5 is because his grading system is sooooo weird. Unlike every other teacher who has a 80-82.5% (B-), 83-86.5% (B), and 87-89.5% (B+) grading scale, his scores are B-=(80-81), B=82-88, and B+= 89.
