Notes are very easy to understand, and his tests aren't too bad as long as you use the study guide he gives out. Minimal homework per week and no quizzes. Overall, i liked him alot!
Crystal clear voice and notes. He organizes notes on the board very neatly, making copying a breeze. Tests are relatively easy. A very good teacher to take if you have not had experience with calculus in the past because he explains things in an simple manner. My only complaint is that his in-class examples are usually from the book.
lots of notes during class. very clear though. tests were not bad. he pulls questions from the text book or very similar so do all the suggested practice problems and youll be able to get an A. go to office hours if you need help and dont be afraid to challenge his grading or double check it if you believe u deserve more he will
Loved him! Very organized lectures and extremely clear. He's always available and responds to e-mails quickly. He's a very by the book guy. His handwriting is perfect..and he's prettttty nice to look at. :)
Really easy class, really easy professor. Hilarious British accent.
Dr. Everest is one of the most helpful professors I've had at Pitt. The class is challenging, but he really does his best to clarify topics. He's very helpful outside of class; I definitely recommend going to his office hours if you need extra help. Overall great professor.
a very nice professor and help me a lot when I lost my textbook and notes! it is worth to take his class!
I took MATH 0420 with Tom. Although the materials are not easy, the lecture he prepared make them manageable. He is very bright and has a British accent.
Professor Everest is very articulate and knowledgeable. He is easy to approach and will spend the time to teach you concepts you don't understand. Homework is difficult but useful.
Everest is delightful! Listening to his British accent is always fun and keeps you interested. Never hesitate to ask a question or go to his office hours because he loves that, but most of the time he's clear during his lectures so it's not really necessary.
He's really inspiring and helpful. His lectures are well-structured and easy to understand. If you listen to him in class you can definitely get good grades.
I took him for 413 & 420, and enjoyed him both semesters. Lectures are very clear cut & you will be well prepared for tests. He is very helpful during office hours as well. I believe all of this is because he just finished his PhD not too long ago and knows exactly what students need to succeed in a modern classroom as opposed to other professors.
Took calc 3 with him, felt well prepared for the final. He's very organized and straight forward. Good teacher.
Calc 2 is a tough class regardless of who you choose as your professor. But I think Dr. Everest did a spectacular job explaining the material and the concepts behind it in the class. Just keep up with the textbook+practice problems in addition to his lectures and you should be fine.
Everest is awesome. Calc 2 is a difficult subject, but his lectures are crystal clear and he's even clearer in office hours. The pace of the course is so fast, so you need to go to lecture or you'll likely miss several sections. Course grade is 80% exams, but the exams are very straightforward if you know the material; no tricks.
Calc 2 is unfortunately not an easy class, but Prof. Everest makes it as easy as he can. His tests are fair, he doesn't throw anything too crazy at you, and the online assignments are challenging but helpful to understand the material. I wish he taught Calc 3 next semester because I would absolutely take him again.
Good guy, nice accent. Tests were very fair and I felt prepared for the final. Would recommend.
I took Dr. Everest for Calc 2. I was nervous because I knew Calc 2 did not have the highest pass rate, but he made every topic understandable & clear. His lectures were great and his tests were difficult but fair. There was not an unreasonable amount of homework, but I would recommend doing all the practice problems. Best professor all year by far.
Everest is, frankly, one of the most effective teachers I have ever encountered. His lecture notes are incredibly clear, and he's specific in what you need to know for each exam. He's not necessarily inspiring, but he is definitely effective. Helpful examples. Do the book problems. He's awesome in office hours, and really wants students to do well.
Calc 2 is really difficult, but Dr. Everest did a fantastic job of clarifying the material. No matter what, you'd end up having to master many skills on your own for this class, though. The quizzes were way too long but don't count for much. The exams were very fair. Dr. Everest has a great lecture style and good pacing. He always uses the board.
Dr. Everest was an amazing Calc 2 Prof! He was super clear during class, and he is just as clear during his office hours. He's willing to help you anytime. He gives nice partial credit on exams so at least try the problems. Use the textbook for extra practice for sure. His exams are not easy but not anywhere near impossible either.
He has a great sense of humor. His notes are really clear. All exams are based on materials discussed in the class. Reachable out of the class. Great professor
Everest was by far the best professor I have had at Pitt. He's funny, his lectures are entertaining, and he's very good at explaining concepts that can be extremely difficult. Calc II is one of the hardest classes at Pitt, but he certainly makes it bearable. Nice guy, and very accessible outside of the class.
Probably the best math professor I've ever had. Would definitely recommend Everest! He makes everything so clear and easy to understand. I had taken this class before in high school but he still found ways to make it interesting even the second time through. Overall great prof! Great handwriting and notes too! Phenomenal lectures.
Everest is by far the greatest calc professor I've had so far. He always cracks corny jokes to lighten the mood of calc 2, and he is very good at explaining abstract concepts. Tests we very fair and representative of the lectures. Would definitely take him again for any math class because his British accent is amazing.
Honestly the best math professor I have ever seen. He is amazing at explaining stuff and his british accent makes math just flow into your ears.
Tom is an amazing calc 2 professor. His lectures are super well organized and very clear. The course itself is hard but he prepares you well for his tests if you study. Definitely my favorite professor I've had at Pitt. British accent is a plus too.
Prof Everest's lectures are so well-prepared and organized. He makes the hardest material easy to follow. Everything you want in a math professor!
Easy to follow, easy to talk to. He clearly cares about his students and wants to help them do well. He is very good at explaining concepts. He can move slow at times but is a fantastic professor.
I had Everest for Calc 2 last semester and he made the most failed class at Pitt seem easy. He talks very clearly (the British accent actually helps), and he explains everything very well, even stopping the lecture and asking students if they understand before moving on. He really cares about his students and his office hours are extremely helpful.
Everest is the best! Calc 2 can be a very challenging course but Everest is able to explain the material very well and is always willing to help. Going to class, doing the book problems on your own, and studying hard is a must but as long as you do that, you will have no problems. He also has the best British accent, definitely recommend!
Best professor ever! I took Dr. Everest for Pre-Calc and he is very organized, clear, and helpful. I hope to take Calc 1 with him in the future. Highly recommend.
He is so great, he explains EVERYTHING, he's nice and if he ever makes a silly mistake on the board he doesn't get defensive like some other professors do, recitation quizzes are easy, homework is easy with some question for the MAC, doesn't take attendance in class, recitation attendance is required on tuesdays for quiz. He's funny and BRITSH
The best math teacher Ive had at pitt. Great guy. Plus hes British.
He is one of the greatest teachers I have ever met. If you do the homeworks and get as many looks as you can at the calc 2 problems, you WILL do well in the course given that you understand the material. He certainly teaches it in a manner where you can and I heard he is appreciably better than any other calc 2 teacher. Cool accent too, great man
Very funny, but very dry. It was especially difficult to take this class in the evening, since his voice nearly put me to sleep. However, he does a great job explaining the material. Don't get too comfortable, though- I missed a week of sequences and series, and it really hurt on the second midterm. Work hard and you'll be fine.
Based on my friends who had other profs for calc 2, Everest is hands down the best. He made everything extremely clear and had ridiculously organized lectures. Tests and recitation quizzes were MUCH easier than other profs' and VERY fair. He's a wonderful teacher and I'm definitely going to try to take classes with him again. Would recommend!!
He taught the subject fairly well and was willing to help with just about anything you asked him about. Be aware that you cannot use notes on his tests or the final and there is a lot of formulas to memorize but that's a decision the math department made, not him.
I found math to be pretty difficult in high school, but Dr. Everest made even the hardest trig applications seem simple and understandable. He is incredibly organized and very helpful during his office hours. Tests are fair and based on the material that had been taught.
Let me start off by saying me and math dont mix, unless its just algebra but somehow magically prof. Everest made me understand. Hes a great teacher, gives you this sheet that shows you where in the book that specific lecture covers and practice questions . I recommend going to class, do webwork, take notes, & review his detailed class notes
Ran through calc 2 with Everest this past fall, hard class to take and also a hard class to learn but he was efficient and explained all of the concepts very well. He will check many times to be sure that his work makes sense and that everyone is following. I did not really use the textbook but rather watched videos and completed the Lon Capa work.
The absolute best math teacher at Pitt. He is a lecture god- interesting, detailed, organised. Hes patient and great at accommodating various learning styles. Hes also unreasonably attractive and a great guy.
Math is NEVER fun, but in this class at least it was understandable. Tom is a great teacher and gives fair quizzes and tests(one of the only math teachers that puts multiple choice on it). Textbook isn't necessary but is helpful when studying for finals. Wish i could take him again
He's extremely accessible outside of class and always willing to help which is so crucial when it comes to these harder classes. He's the gem of Pitt's math department.
Everest is one of the best in the Pitt math department. If you have to take Calc 2 at pitt take everest. He is very thorough and will help you individually if you ever need it.
2 WORDS: LECTURE GOD In conclusion: take him for any math classes you are required to take if possible
Amazing lecturer. Exams were relatively easy so you have to study hard for the final.
BE WARNED: Great prof, good lectures. You will think you are doing well in the class because you made As and Bs on your mid-terms. This would be WRONG thinking. Does not prepare you for the departmental final and does not teach all the material you will need. I had an A going into the final and failed the final and now have a D and have to repeat.
AMAZING LECTURER. Literally the best. Take Everest no matter the cost. Homework was a bit much, but thats linear for you. Exams were fair. Everest prepares you for the final
Took him for Calc 2, and FANTASTIC LECTURES. Easily the best and easiest to follow lectures I've ever seen in the math department here. But that won't stop the final from being hell. The Calc departmental finals are basically unfair, but Tom helped me prepare for this much better than the previous time (I had to retake it). Great and funny guy too
His lectures were fantastic! Tests were very fair, however I felt that they alone didn't prepare me for the departmental final (I had to retake this course because I didn't prepare the right way). This could be avoided however by studying harder problems, because the departmental final will be hell. That being said I would definitely take him again
Everest was a great professor and always made sure you understood the material. His exams were way easier than the final so watch out for that
God Tier lecturer, this man could teach a fish to walk on land probably. Would recommend for any math class he available for.
Everest is solid. Pretty accessible outside of class with office hours and a pretty humorous guy if you get to know him. My semester with Everest for Calc I was flipped (lectures outside of class), so just be careful that you choose the right section for your skillset (flipped vs. nonflipped).
I never took calc before coming here, and Everest made it so easy. He manages to make calculus entertaining somehow, and is generally just a great guy. He wants to see you succeed and cares a ton for his students. He offers exam corrections for 20% credit, and while his exams are not easy, they are fair and they prepared me very well for the final
Dr. Everest is one of the best math professors I've had at Pitt, he's up there with Dr. Hockensmith. He is super super organized, and the class is perfectly paced, following the syllabus to a T. All the homework is from the textbook. We were well prepared for both midterms and the final, and he even gave credit for test correction.
Dr Everest is an outstanding professor. His lectures are clear, easy to follow, and he provides many examples. He comes to class organized, and will happily answer any of your questions. The only warning I have is that his tests are a lot easier than the final, so you will have to study hard for the final. Overall, great professor and great guy.
Professor Everest does a fantastic job of not only teaching the basics of calculus, but making sure you fully understand the concepts behind every topic you learn. He keeps his lectures interesting and engaging. Two midterms are extremely easy, but the final is much more difficult, so be prepared to put a lot of time into studying for the final.
His lectures are fantastic and gives lots of examples. The best advice I can give is take good notes of what he goes over (including the examples). And do the homework -- these are primarily what got me to understand calc2. The notes I took of his lectures helped big time for his exams and especially for the departmental final. He does a great job.
Complete teddy bear of a professor. Show him you are trying and he will do the absolute best he can to help you succeed. Very funny and caring guy!!
Dont take his class got an A or B on everything, wasnt ready for the final failed and now I gotta retake it. Not a good professor or a nice.
Everest is the most kind professor I've had for a math course. His lectures are engaging, he tries to make sure that no students fall behind, and he is accessible outside of class. His tests are fair to the content taught in lecture, and his test correction policy provides a grade boost should one of the exams go poorly.
Prof. Everest is just okay. His lectures are clear in that each one correlated to a section of the textbook clearly, however the examples he does in class are not necessarily helpful or relevant. To me, it seemed like he struggled to make connections or sense of the material. This lack of relevant examples made quizzes, exams and lon capa difficult
Nice guy and a good professor. Knows what hes talking about and wants students to do well. Exams are tough and a bit long but he allows test corrections. Do book problems and get help if stuck since Lon Capa is trash and will not help you at all. If you do only the Lon Capa problems you will struggle. Good professor, tough course.
Pretty nice guy. Likes to have a good time in class while also explaining the material. Make sure you do problems from the book to prepare for his exams, as they are tricky
Lectures are clear and keeps you engaged. Super helpful during office hours; he won't treat you like you're stupid. He held 3-hr office hours the day before our final. My only complaint is that his tests are too long for the time given which screwed me over a bit, but he allows test corrections. His tests are similar to the final which is nice
Professor Everest by far is the best mathematics professor I ever have had the pleasure of taking a class with at the University of Pittsburgh. He really turned mathematics around for me, and I highly would recommend his classes.
He was absolutely wonderful, clear, caring, patient, kind, soothing and reasonable. Made a pretty difficult class extremely manageable and approachable. 10/10 would take him for every math class if I could.
He makes math easy. Its just that simple. He is so clear in his lectures. As long as you stay engaged and focus during lecture you will succeed in this class. Take him also because he has a British accent, and that alone makes it worth it.
I took him for 0413 and for 0420, him and Dr. Schikkora worked together. They both are amazing. Tom is so caring and very precise. His choice of words sometimes is just impeccable. He is the perfect teacher for an introduction to analysis class. Really I would take any class with him as he explains things so well. I can not emphasize this enough!
I have now taken Dr. Everest for multiple classes and loved every one of them. Linear algebra can be a little confusing and hard to wrap your mind around, but Dr. Everest makes it so much easier. He provides many examples in his lectures that help you fly through the Homework with ease. Tests are long, but if you go to class, you will do well.
Explains concepts very well, and super approachable if you have questions in or after class. Lots of notes per lecture with lots of time between homework assignments. Tough course but if you put the time and effort the midterms and final should be alright.
Awesome teacher
tom everest is a great choice for calc 3. tests aren't bad (they are fair) but you definitely have to study. departmental final was a little harder than his exams but overall this is a great professor for a difficult class.
Im okay at calculus so my B is my own fault. Professor Everest is a great professor, however, and I highly recommend him. He has a great sense of humor and explains concepts very well and is open to questions. Very enjoyable class, couldnt recommend him more highly!
Everest does a great job explaining everything and is an overall cool dude. Do the textbook pages and youll be fine
he is an angel
Tom is a great professor, one of the best math professors I've had. Super organized and very personable. A solid amount of work, but that's to be expected for Calc and he will give you infinite attempts on the HW if you need them. The exams and quizzes are very fair.
Great at explaining concepts and answering questions--makes good drawings during lecture to help visualize 3D surfaces. He's a genuinely great guy which is more than can be said about the other math professors I've had here. The class was difficult in my opinion, but that's more the material than the man. Highly recommend Everest.
Good enough for calc 3. Gave good examples and worked through problems, but explained nearly none of how anything was derived. Felt like he was just giving us theorems to memorize. Fair tests, relatively fast grader.
Prof Everest was a great lecturer and was very caring and supportive. His quizzes were super easy and his tests were also very manageable so when it came time for the departmental final I thought it was very challenging. All that said, I still feel like I learned a lot and would recommend him.
Dr. Everest is one of the best math professors at Pitt. His lectures are so clear and he explains all of the topics very thoroughly. He grades the exams very fairly and he assigns a weekly homework assignment of around ten textbook problems. He is extremely helpful in office hours.
It will be my pleasure to have Tom Everest for Math class. Really careful teacher who try to make sure that you can completely understand his content. Sometimes he likes to make the exam problems easier and like to give partial credit as much as possible if you shows your work.
Not only is Tom a great guy, he is accessible outside of class, super helpful, patient, and does his best to make sure we understand content and origin of formulas. Im not going to lie, calculus is an extremely difficult subject - but Toms class is awesome. He holds review sessions, answers all of our questions and is super cool. Recommended!
Calc 2 is going to be difficult with any professor, but Tom is a really solid choice. He's fantastic at teaching and his weekly quizzes are pretty easy. His midterms are more difficult than his quizzes but not impossible. Do the practice in the textbook to do well and his grading is a little weird, but Tom's a great guy and a great Professor.
I dont think Im going to do the best in this course, but Everest is a solid choice. He gives you all the resources needed to succeed. I didnt do a lot of practice problems, but if I did I wouldve done better. He also has a bunny cam for finals week :)
Excellent professor, excellent guy, awesome accent. I was kinda worried about jumping straight into Calc 2 my first semester but this guy made it an amazing experience (and made it my favorite class). His lectures were perfectly structured and paced and everything always made sense. 10/10 loves a good cycloid
Dr. Everest is an amazing professor. He explains topics very clearly and effectively. He is one of the best math professors I have had at Pitt. I would definitely take another class taught by him.
Best choice for Calc. 2 at Pitt. He describes the material very clearly and provides many extra resources for further help. The class can be slightly intimidating at times because there's only two midterms and a final, but as long as you do the suggested book problems you'll do well.
Dr. Everest is an amazing professor. He genuinely cares about his students and is very fair with exams. He doesnt record lectures so if you want to get a good grade, you have to attend class. Most of your grade is based on two midterm exams and the final, but you should do well as long as you study and do the recommended practice problems.
Cale 3 is going to be hard no matter who you take, but Tom makes it as straightforward as possible. Super nice guy who really cares about his students. I highly recommend himl
Professor Everest is easily one of the best professors to take for Calc II. His lectures are well-executed and his explanations, precise. Put in the work and you'll do more than just pass. I can't stress this enough, don't slack during his lectures because he does a really good job of explaining things. Do the Lon-Capa and pick some book problems.
Learning Calc in a British accent is a great time, Everest teaches very hard concept very well and is overall just a nice and funny person. His tests are very fair for what he teaches in class, ever problem is like an average difficulty, with that being said calc 2 is still a very difficult subject so you still have to study alot
Everest is a good professor who teaches the topics well. Attending class is not mandatory, but necessary if you don't want to fall behind. If you put in the work and learn the material (which he makes it easy to do), this will be no harder than any other math class you'll take at Pitt.
He's very good at teaching and explains things very well. Calc 2 is never an easy subject but he'll guide you through just fine. You'll definitely want to attend every lecture as you can fall behind really easily.
I had Dr. Everest for calc 3 and thought he was a good professor. His lectures were very useful, but I recommend doing book problems to help study. His exams were fair. They weren't super easy but they helped you to prepare for the final exam. I would recommend him.
Dr. Everest is a great choice for calc 3. I had him for calc 2 last semester and had just as great of an experience, although I did find calc 3 to be significantly more difficult. Lectures arent mandatory, but you should go if you want to do well. Most of your grade is dependent upon your performance on exams due to departmental rules.
Great professor for calc 3. His lectures are very easy to follow, and he always stops to answer questions. All of the lectures are made available online. Exams are tough but fair. Due to departmental rules your grade is almost entirely determined by exams, so make sure to study hard for them.
Everest is a great choice for calc 2. Very easy to ask for questions, never makes you feel stupid, posts his notes and good exam practice. Calc 2 is hard no matter what but Everest made it the best it could be with his lectures, highly recommend.
If you take Calc 2 because of prerequisite for other major don't take him. You get grades by two midterm exams (25% each), loncapa (10%), quiz (10%) and final (30%), NO extra credit. If the average of midterm is not bad he won't give a curve. Even if he gives the EC that adds on your homework grade or loncapa grade (which does not help).
Tom's a really great professor and person. Midterms and the exam were difficult (but not impossible). Easy weekly quizzes. Extremely accessible outside of class and he's really great at explaining topics that you having trouble with in office hours. He records every lecture if you miss or need to re-watch and he's insanely good at teaching.
I am extremely qualified to write this review as I took Calculus 2 from him... twice. I failed the final my first time around and had to retake it. Frankly, that was my fault and he was such a good professor I had no qualms taking his course again. He is an extraordinarily clear and concise lecturer and I make no hesitation recommending him.
Uploads notes online so you can check. Really thorough lectures, but his practice midterms doesn't help THAT much. In fact, it looks very different from the actual midterm(which are longer and harder). Took me some time to adjust bc I was surprised and panicked how hard and long the actual midterm is(even his TA agreed w me) for 50 min time limit
Took Everest for my first semester at Pitt, chose him for his high rating and was not disappointed. The lectures were clear and the test were fair.
He was a great professor overall. I did not take calculus during high school and he made it manageable. He was very kind to his students and made class interesting. I recommend him!
The best professor in the world. Explained every topic so well and slowly and made sure everybody understood. Most of the grade is the 3 tests taken but if you pay attention and study you can do very well.
Good lectures, explained very well, answers questions well. Uses very easy examples in lecture and homework and quizzes feature much harder questions, so I relied on youtube. Midterms and quizzes are WAY easier then final.
Context: I took Calc 1 with Prof. Everest and am not naturally gifted in math. Prof Everest is thorough and expansive when it comes to explaining topics. His class is very structured - lon cappa and a quiz due every week at the same time. He is easy to reach outside of class. He is fairly stolid but is reasonable when it comes to his expectations.
Great lectures. The midterm and quizzes were very easy, which is good in a way but also did not prepare me for the final, which was way too difficult.
extremely clear and organized. not always the most interesting material but it was just calc 1. did a great job giving us what we needed to learn to succeed. straightforward lectures and examples. not a ton of assigned homework but I would do the optional problems he assigns. midterm exams were pretty easy. overall a solid prof
Professor Everest was a really good teacher. I thought his lectures were well taught, the mini quizzes during recitation each week weren't difficult, and he gave you plenty of practice + materials to prep for the exams. Overall would really reccomend for Calc 1.
Professor Everest was amazing for Calc 1. His lectures were always clear and organized. The weekly quizzes were pretty simple and they prepared you well for the difficulty of problems to expect on the midterms. Midterms were pretty easy as well and the final was not too tough compared to the midterms.
Tom is bae. He's so thorough in lectures and just a chill dude. Weekly online homework and gives partial credit on exams for trying. Best calc prof
Everest is a great teacher for Calc 1, he teaches it at a high level, speaks very eloquently, but never is condescending or arrogant towards his students. Would love to take his class again.
Lectures are comprehensive and organized. Always aware of other students and their accessibility to the board. Posts notes & practice exams to Canvas. Quizzes are 2 questions for 10 min, and really easy. Textbook not needed if paying attention in lecture. Great professor for those who haven't taken calculus in high school. Prepares well for exams.
Calc 2 is notoriously difficult, but Everest made it very easy to understand. His tests can be difficult, so do the homework and practice with old tests.
Very effective lecturer given the difficulty of the subject, and is very available for help. Quizzes were very simple. Lenient enough when it comes to grading, but the exams are still relatively difficult, especially the final (though not written exclusively by him). Also is very organized. Objectively a very good choice.
dr. everest is very accessible and willing to help you if you need it. the exams are difficult and he is a tough grader, but he prepares you well for the departmental final.
Dr. Everest is really just an all around great prof. Is super caring and attentive to class questions, wants you to succeed. Tests are reasonable, homeworks are hard but the grading system works in your favor. Lectures are very clear and make a lot of sense. If you go every day and take notes you will succeed.
Dr. Everest was amazing at lecturing and made very difficult topics very clear and understandable. Quizzes were fairly easy and exams were difficult, but not terrible or impossible. No curves on the midterms because averages were pretty high, but the departmental final did have a curve. Overall a very good professor.
There are no words in the English language to describe how beautiful this man is with mathematics. Yes, his class is quite difficult and it requires you to pay attention in class, but you LEARN in his class. I've only had him for half of a semester, but I don't think I've learned more in such a short amount of time and understood it thoroughly.
Dr. Everest is one of the best lecturers I have had, and even when I missed class the uploaded notes were clear and understandable. Lots of optional extra practice from textbook, and exams are difficult but fair. Very accessible through office hours as well! In terms of grading, there's a short weekly hw and pretty easy quiz, 2 midterms, and final.
Dr. Everest is the best professor I have ever had. His lectures are amazing, and his explanations are clear and concise. The practice problems prepare you for the quizzes, which are easy. The midterms are difficult but fair. He also covers all the material that you need to know for the final. Don't miss an opportunity to take this class!
Dr. Everest is the Bob Ross of mathematics. It is very calming to listen to him teach. I swear he reheares his lectures because of how orchestrated they seem by the end of class. Content wise, the weekely quizzes are 2 quick, doable questions and the exams are mildly difficult.
He is the MATH MAN. My jaw dropped on lecture one and stayed that way till I finished the final.
Easily one of the best profs I've had at Pitt, calc GOAT. Lectures are amazing, and everything is explained very clearly. The course does go very fast so you definitely have to pay attention. Midterms can be hard but they're pretty fair and prepare you for the departmental final. Most of your grade is exams so make sure to prepare for those.
THE ABSOLUTE BEST MATH PROF AT PITT! TAKE THIS MAN IF YOU WANT CLEAR LECTURES AND EXAMPLES THAT DIRECTLY RELATE TO THE CONTENT ON TESTS. Lectures are enjoyable and to the point, content is clear. He is very passionate about math and always willing to help. I WOULD RECOMMEND HIM TO ANYONE AS HE IS THE GOAT!!!
THE HYPE IS FAKE
Thomas Everest is one of the best math professors at Pitt. He explains concepts in an excellent, clear manner and has very fair exams. He is also British and is easy to listen to. Calc 2 is a difficult subject (most failed class at Pitt), but if you do the book problems, you will do fine on the midterms and final.
He is a great lecturer. Lectures always have clear descriptions and example problems. He is extremely helpful in office hours and is clearly willing to discuss any questions at any time. He is funny and very polite as well. Clearly cares about his students and will help in anyway.
Dr. Everest is a very nice guy. His lectures are very clear and he gives a lot of examples. The course material is hard and so is the final, but he gives practice exams and good preparation.
i think his lectures and notes are really clear but he's one of the professors whose in class example are pretty basic in comparison to the textbook questions and the questions on the final. if you're not someone who learns well from just basic examples and needs to also go through more difficult example in class, he may not be right for you.
What an amazing professor, exactly what you'd want from a math professor, straight to the point, punctual, very knowledgeable, very helpful. I would recommend everyone taking Calc 2 to take him, his midterms were very fair and made a class that I have heard is very difficult more than manageable, pay attention and go to both recitations
Very clear and to the point, has a good number of example problems in lectures, and plans the perfect amount of content to fill a lecture and stay on schedule. Tests and quizzes are similar to recommended textbook problems and problems sets. Exams and quizzes prepare you well for the final. Overall very well organized and well structured lectures.
The hype is real. Even though a lot of the lecture examples were from the textbook, Dr. Everest did a great job explaining concepts. Lectures were always timed very well, and never felt rushed in the class. Would highly recommend. Also very funny :D
Enjoyable professor. He uploaded his notes to canvas so attending lecture wasn't mandatory, but still very useful. There are weekly quizzes given in recitation that aren't hard (which I wasn't prepared for so I did horribly on every time) and the tests are relatively difficult. The final was the only thing that really gave me a run for my money.
Great professor! Easy to understand and explains hard concepts very well. I was extremely prepared for the final which is the hardest part of the course. He's super funny and relatable too. Class has 2 midterms, but as long as you understand the notes, you will get an A. Lon capa sucks so much but ask him questions or your TA and you will get a 100
Amazing professor, difficult exams but really good at explaining and very well organized.
He teaches assuming you already know everything he is teaching and if your taking the class to actully learn the topic you wont. For the exams he gives practice problems and answers but his answers skip steps and are very difficult to understand. He also takes weeks to grade tests. Avoid at all costs worst teacher ive ever had.
calc 2 is HARD. but Everest is such a good lecturer. does problems and reviews concepts in class, homework isnt too hard, and overall such a nice guy. bi-weekly recitation quizzes that are pretty easy. midterms are kinda hard, but not if you study a bit. very open to questions and i really recommend to take him if you can!
Everest is a fantastic math professor - his lectures are crystal clear and he has a great sense of humor. While Calc 2 is challenging, Everest's fair exams and textbook-aligned problems make the class manageable. For study prep, I found unstuckstudy and ChatGPT super helpful.
Dr. Everest has clear, concise lectures and genuinely cares about his students learning the material. Calc 2 isn't supposed to be an easy class, but he posts the lectures online if you end up getting lost in the material. The homework and quizzes aren't bad, just be prepared to study for the exams.
Very good lecturer, always stopped to see if people had questions. Quizzes were fairly easy, midterms were difficult, make sure to study. Always posts lecture notes verbatim after class. 100% would recommend as long as you have a somewhat good base for calc 2.
Overall a great professor! Grades consist of the weekly homework/quizzes, and three midterms and a final. Quizzes are easy if you pay attention/study. Homework is fine also. The tests are definitely managable and there are no trick questions, but you definitely have to study a lot for them since it's a lot of material.
Incredible professor, I wish he taught all of my classes. Uploaded notes, frequent office hours, easy-to-follow lectures. He's the only reason I got through Calc 2, and I'm really glad I got his class. Worth taking it in the morning.
Professor Everest is definitely the best route to take for Calc. His lectures are super informative and he equips you with a bunch of resources to practice outside of class. The final is pretty rough, so make sure you study hard for the midterms and do you best where you can! Make sure you utilize office hours and don't be afraid to ask questions!
He was such a good professor. Moved fast and made the topic a little over complicated but recitations and his office hours help a lot and he is very caring. I didn't do well on the tests but the quizzes and homework helped my grade a lot and somehow I ended up with an A-.
All these 5's makes my wonder if Tom is running some kind of Rate My Proffesor profit scheme. Not a bad teacher, but I wouldn't say he's a good one either. Obsesses over explaining concepts, with very little time left for practice problems. Grading is very inconsistent.
hes a very very boring lecturer. he has no sympathy outside of the class and he is super hard to talk to with his stuborness. his material on his practice exams do not correlate towards his exams at all. his exams are like a mini textbook and you only have 50 minutes to get through it. do not take him if you want to pass math280 find someone else!
Don't take into account of the previous reviews giving him a 5 star rating those were from 7-8 years ago. He is not what the previous ratings describe him as. He is very stubborn and does not give any flexibility whatsoever. Exams are very difficult and if you do not go to his boring lectures you will probably fail. Reads straight from the book.
I don't know why some of the new reviews are so low. I found Dr. Everest to be very through and I felt very prepared for the midterms and final. He posts notes online after each lecture which is nice. One thing that I found very helpful was to do the optional practice problems for each section right after class (that night or the next day).
Dr. Everest is one of the best math professors at Pitt. I had the luck of taking him for both MATH 0230 and 0240. He is an amazing lecturer who is very clear in his instruction. He provides a copy of his online notes from each lecture which is helpful if you miss something. He prepares you very well for the departmental final which is cumulative.
he's a nice guy but imo his lectures do not adequately prepare you for the exams. his practice exams do not reflect what is on the real midterm exams. his examples in class are simple, and then the problems on the exam are way more difficult questions about the same topic. i was surprised how good his reviews are because his teaching is mediocre
Everest is a solid choice for a 240 professor. Friendly guy, great accent. Lectures are clear and he is organized. Notes are posted to Canvas. Frequent reminders about grading system, HW and test dates. Lon-CAPA HW was not too overwhelming. Tests were challenging but reasonable. Was receptive of questions during lecture and office hours.
He's so GOATED. I'm not even joking, just put in the work outside of class and do the practice problems he recommends, you'll be good.
Great professor, wants to help his students as best he can. Would definitely take again!
Questions discussed in class were surface level and didn't understand why you were doing things. On exams you have to put it in the format he wants otherwise it is wrong. Take an easier math class.
I absolutely could not stand him. The quizzes totally mislead you- they're way easier than the two midterms, which come out of nowhere in difficulty. The Lon-Capa homework is long, tedious, and feels never-ending. Lectures are painfully boring, and the examples we go over are nothing like what we're actually tested on.
Great professor who wants to see his students succeed. Sometimes overcomplicates material, but is awesome nonetheless.
The class itself is very hard, but he did not make it any easier. Exam questions were way more difficult than the ones covered in class or on homework. He isn't an awful professor but just teaches on the surface level and expects you to understand it to the fullest extent.
He's a nice guy, but his lectures are a waste of time. Does not cover material deeply only on a surface level basis and expects you to just figure it out from there. His quizzes are also not similar to the midterms or final. Don't recommend.
he provided the materials for success, but he doesn't necessarily teach it himself. i personally found his lectures helpful, but i spent hours outside of class teaching myself out of the textbook. i didn't feel that prepared for my final, but that could have been a personal problem
Lectures are very helpful, and he always posts notes after which are very organized. It's clear he cares a lot about his students and wants everyone to succeed. Calc 3 is a class with a lot of material but he does a great job of covering everything with a certain amount of depth. His midterms are pretty easy and usually have high averages.
His lectures are mostly good but sometimes he will veer off and talk about things we do not need to know for the exam which can get annoying. Lectures can be very surface level with exams being way harder. All the being said he is still definitely your best option as far as pitt's math department goes.
Everest is a great professor and makes calc lecture bearable. His exams are rough but they prepare you well for the final. You definitely have to put in the work outside of class and do most, if not all, of the textbook problems to get a good grade. He either explains topics surface level or goes into too much depth.
I took calc previously in high school so this class was pretty much a breeze. The quizzes and exam questions were usually pretty simple compared to the homework. The homework was sometimes annoying, long, and repetitive. The midterms were pretty straightforward, but the final was much harder. Overall, it was a great class.
Very solid professor, very smart, gives plenty of partial credit when grading. Would def recommend for any math class he teaches.
He's a great, very chill teacher. He teaches very well. I'm not entirely fond of his grading scale, 2 midterms each worth 25%, however his teaching makes up for it. There is a decent time crunch on both midterms and especially the final, but all of them get curved.
