It is a flipped class, so be ready to do a lot of work outside of class. There are daily clicker questions, so you could skip a few times, but you would want to go to most of the lectures to get the points. He curved a few of the tests, and on the final, he gave us a lot of extra credit. He knows many of the students in the class by name.
Freeman was definitely the easiest CHEM 101 professor you could have. The flipped classroom wasn't bad, but you have to stay on top of all of the outside work. He is a super cool and fun guy. Plus he curved everything and gave you every opportunity to get a good grade; it was hard to do bad in there. I would definitely recommend him to anyone.
Dr. Freeman is very well-intentioned and enthusiastic. He even memorized everybody's names. However, maybe he should have spent this time developing lesson plans because his class was very disorganized. Because of this and the flipped classroom technique I often had little idea what I was suppose to know for exams or what to prepare for each class
Dr. Freeman's class was very frustrating due to the flipped classroom style early on in the semester. He made up for this by giving loads of extra credit on the final and two separate final grade calculation methods to help students. Be prepared to spend lots of time teaching yourself and doing online homework such as ALEKS.
Dr. Freeman was a good professor in the sense that he assigned helpful homework assignments (like Pogil and Aleks). However, there were times when I wondered if he actually entirely knew the material he was teaching. He second guessed himself a lot which led to a lot of confusion amongst the lecture audience. Overall course not so difficult.
This class was awful. He does flipped-classroom style which leaves all the work on you. Not only do you have to learn the material yourself, but you have to do a workbook, 2 different online homework sites, and the tests are difficult. He gives a clicker quiz everyday.
Dr. Freeman is an excellent professor. People need to realize that when you come to college, a lot of work is required outside of class. So the lectures were only beneficial if you prepared for each class. Dr. Freeman really cares about his students and their success and is very kind, and strive to make the classroom a fun learning environment.
Too much work put in for the grade I received. His tests are harder than they need to be for an intro class and Sapling and Aleks are both unnecessary homework sites. Would not recommend taking his class unless you love a flipped-class room andor are a guru in chemistry.
Dr. Freeman is an amazing professor. The people complaining clearly did not put the need effort into the class. This is a science class so of course it was a challenge. As long as you do the homework and practice tests with a positive and determined attitude, you will get the content. I will also rec office hours. Dont buy textbook; neveropenedit
Wonderful professor! He helps students understand things conceptually, which was good for me since I had no background in chem from high school. If you put in the effort, you'll do well. The bad reviews on here don't seem accurate at all to me. Tests:very fair, cover exactly what he teaches LecturesHW:instructional, interactive, helpful
The material isn't difficult if you took chemistry classes in high school. However, it's a flipped classroom so you have a ton of ALEKS and Sapling homework and may get confused if you have to learn from scratch. That said, you still have to show up to every lecture because there are clicker quizzes. Tests are fair. Easy A if you put in the work.
Professor Freeman was a very clear lecturer and gave homework and classwork that was actually helpful. He gave so much extra credit on exams and some assignments that the class became an easy A.
He's very passionate about the subject, is super nice, and is definitely willing to help anyone who asks for it. He tries to make the class enjoyable (ie. tell chemistry jokes). His tests are fairly easy and straightforward as long as you pay attention in class. I'm glad I had him and I would definitely recommend him.
He is very enthusiastic about the course and tries to keep lecture entertaining. Although it is a flipped classroom, he goes over everything and is willing to answer questions. There are several homework assignments, but they are beneficial and help reinforce the material. His tests are not difficult, he offers practice tests and extra credit
Freeman is a wonderful guy. He's a very lively person, and it honestly surprises me this website has a B for him. His tests were relatively easy, as long as you look at all his powerpoints and practice exams. Only annoying things are clickers and saplings.
Very well-liked and willing to answer questions.
Dr. Freeman is awesome! I was really nervous about taking chemistry, but he explains everything clearly and it is clear that he cares that students understand the material. He puts up practice tests before exams which are really helpful for studying. The homework outside of class is not bad at all. TAKE HIS CLASS!!!!
Tests are really straight forward, but can be tough if you don't practice the material in advance. Freeman is a great professor for this course though. He's laid back and pretty funny. He makes the material easy to grasp. You just have to make sure to retain it. Clicker questions are used for participation/mini-quizzes.
Very unclear in a flipped classroom. Wasn't very clear on subject matters and pretty disorganized
Dr. Freeman is an amazing professor. He truly cares about each and every student, and he is always willing to help. He's pretty funny as well (he makes a lot of Chemistry jokes). The Sapling and ALEKS are tedious, but are relatively easy. His exams are straightforward and clear-cut. You'll definitely get an A if you study hard and come to class.
Freeman is a nice, funny guy and he knows chemistry like the back of his hand, but he isn't the best professor. He can't decide if he wants to flip the classroom or not and gives clicker quizzes everyday. I could never make it to his office hours because I had other classes, so I emailed him so many times I lost count and he never answered. Oh well
Dr. Freeman is a cool and smart guy. He gives tons of extra credit and offers mentor sessions and also group office hours. Despite this, the class requires tons of work outside. Lectures get confusing, and he could probably be clearer. You have to do a lot of self teaching outside of his class. Be ready for clicker quizzes everyday.
I loved Dr. Freeman! He's extremely knowledgable and genuinely cares about students. He hosts helpful open office hours and review sessions. He's also super funny, and our class shared lots of laughs. Nevertheless, his sense of organization is a little off. He does offer EC though! On Halloween, we could dress up as elements and get 3 extra points.
Dr. Freeman is really laid back and pretty funny in class however, I am not a fan of laid-back teaching styles. He does not give much homework and therefore it is really easy to slack off in class. Put in the work and do the textbook problems and you should be golden.
I honestly didn't put much effort into this class, hence my grade. The class wasn't too bad, and the lectures were fun. There wasn't much homework, which is why I slacked off so much (also because chem lab killing me). He gives a lot of extra credit but doesn't curve or take off your lowest test grade like most other profs. Clicker quizzes everyday
Freeman is by far the best Chem 101 professor at UNC. He's nice, smart, funny, young, and cool. Not to mention that he gives extra credit on every test, including the final, and also for completing surveys and dressing up as an element for Halloween. I didn't use the textbook but it might help. He puts practice tests on Sakai. Take them!
Very clear lectures, lots of sapling homework. Test were fairly easy if you studied. Final is exactly like the three tests from the semester. Overall, very easy to get an A if you try, would definitely take again.
He was a very clear lecturer, and participation was graded through clicker questions. We had a lot of sapling homework, but it's not difficult. Test were fairly easy if you studied. The final is exactly like the three tests from the semester, which makes it easy to study for. Overall, very easy to get an A if you try, would definitely take again.
I though it was great but I had him his first semester, so he was lenient and he might get harder later on
Dr. Freeman is a very knowledgeable and intelligent professor - while his lectures may sometimes be confusing, I always attended class and had a very fun time listening to him explain chemistry - he loves it, which made me love it. Tests can be very difficult but gives partial credit which is a savior!!!
If there was a calculation error on one of your tests, dont expect to get it back until the very end of the semester. Expect to learn from the online Openstax book and only do problems in class. Tests have a similar format to the practice tests but he will test on stuff we not covered in class & posts a video online and tests on that info
There's a good bit of online homework. Tests are very similar to practice tests, and there are extra credit opportunities on all of them. Participation matters but there is extra credit opportunities available for that as well. Even though I skipped a handful of classes, my participation score was still high.
Chem is killer, it doesn't matter which professor you have. Freeman is incredibly talented and very fair. If you really take the time to go to his office hours he will help you. He's trying to pass you. He gives SO many extra credit opportunities and partial credit on tests. Tests are similar to practice tests, which is nice. Lots of homework!
Dr. Freeman is a nice, pleasant and funny professor. He wants you to understand the material and pass - take advantage of his generous extra credit and optional instruction time. Mostly online homework. If you do not learn well with a flipped classroom (like me), his class will be frustrating.
Dr. Freeman is an awesome person, but a sub-par professor. His class is flipped classroom, so if you don't know how to do the material beforehand, chances are, you will be confused in class. Class is made up of practice problems and clicker questions with almost a complete lack of explanation. He is decently helpful in office hours.
Very cool and nice, but not the best lecturer. Found that I had to rely on teaching myself almost all of the material. Tests are very fair, though, if you do the Saplings and practice exams.
Dr. Freeman is a really nice guy, but he's a terrible professor. You basically have to teach yourself everything and the tests are really difficult, so good luck.
Freeman is an ok professor. He is a nice guy and is nice enough to talk to, but he uses a flipped classroom, which is difficult to follow at times. He spends most of the class time on practice questions, which would be great if he didn't spend 20 minutes on each question. Take this class only if you can teach yourself chemistry decently well.
If you are not good at reading a textbook and teaching things yourself, you will struggle. I personally prefer learning from practice problems during lecture, but some do not. We almost never finished the lecture slides, but he puts them up online. The grade that you receive depends on the work you put into it. The exams are fair and manageable.
This is a flipped class, so you do have to put in work. Do ALEKS, actually try to understand homework problems, and listen during lecture. Dr. Freeman makes you think, knowing a simple rule isn't good enough if you want to pass. The tests are very fair if you put in the work. The harder problems in the exam are the challenges in the PPT slides.
Flipped classroom so you are basically the teacher and he is simply someone there to ruin our lives and get paid to do it. The exams were impossibly difficult and the class was a waste of time, space, and tears. Avoid at all costs unless absolutely necessary. This class will ruin all of your happiness.
You have to teach yourself. Chem101 profs are inaccessible and his individual office hours are 5 minutes long. Go to ChemPossible(Learning Center) and group office hours because you will not understand the material just by going to class unless you took AP chem. I was able to pull it all together for the final exam, but it took a LOT of work
Picking a 101 prof? Choose Freeman. Lectures are clear and well organized. He explains things really well. He posted some very helpful online videos too. Class time is spent heavily on practice problems, but he gives you enough notes that I never needed the textbook. Exams were very fair - no surprises
Freeman is a very fair teacher who makes you work for your grade. Don't be scared off if you didn't take AP Chem- I only took honors chem in 10th grade and was totally fine. Group office hours (especially morning before the test) are very helpful as well as working through PowerPoint and textbook problems. Be sure to stay on top of online homework.
Freeman was a great teacher who did a good job of making the awful topic of Chemistry more interesting. He uses a flipped classroom so if you don't do well with that you might not like his teaching style. Overall he really cares about his students and I enjoyed his class.
Freeman was a great professor. Chem 101 will always be hard at UNC since it's a weed-out class, but Freeman makes the lecture-hall class interactive and more entertaining. He genuinely cares about his students. I was disappointed that there weren't as many extra credit opportunities as in past semesters. I had an 89 and it didn't round up
It really does not matter too much whether you have him or Beaver as they use the same exact ppt slides. He is a good lecturer and a very nice man. Not many substantial extra credit opportunities except for the final, which was very appreciated. A pretty fair class to be honest. Don't expect it to be easy.
Freeman is a super nice and funny professor. He explained things clearly, but the whole class was spent doing practice problems which is useful, but he wastes way too much time on each one. The tests are straightforward, but you definitely have to know the material - the conceptual and mathematical parts.
I went to almost all of Freeman's group office hours, and learned SO much more from this than regular class. He is super helpful, and willing to help you work through just about any chem problem! He's a funny guy, and super fair, so if you ever have concerns with the fairness of a test/hw problem, go to him.
I was struggling and Dr. Freeman was willing to bend his schedule to provide 1-on-1 assistance. Also, enjoyed his corny jokes.
Dr. Freeman is a great professor. He's knowledgeable and willingly to help students. You don't always find great professors that love to teach, so it's great to have a professor that takes pride in what he's doing even if you don't like chemistry. Go to lecture and make sure you understand the sapling questions.
It's Chem 101. It's not a party. But Freeman is a pretty decent professor and an entertaining guy. The flipped classroom doesn't work that well because there's a lot of sitting around waiting for other people to finish working problems, but when Freeman actually does lecture, he's pretty good at it. You could do a lot worse.
The class is taught at a fast pace but office hours really helps!!! Take it from me. Take his class and go to office hours.
Dr. Freeman was an awesome chemistry professor. I had a very weak chemistry background, but this course prepared me well for CHEM 102. You have to put in work, but in my experience, it is often worthwhile!
One of my favorite professors. Very quirky and intelligent. He actually made me enjoy gen chem. Put in the work if you want a good grade, because the material can be challenging.
Dr. Freeman was a really nice guy, but there were a lot of group projects and he didn't give much immediate feedback on them, which wasn't super great. However, the quizzes and the final were pretty easy, and his lectures were good! Overall, I would probably take him again.
There were too many group projects for this class that taught me NOTHING. Things took forever to get graded and he takes forever to respond to emails. That being said, he was a fair grader and his lectures/powerpoints were really good. I feel like I hated the structure of this class rather than his teaching style. Would be better with only tests.
Dr. Freeman is a nice, friendly guy who unfortunately has to teach a standardized science course. Freeman tries to make chem 101 fun and not scary, but since the class is huge it's hard to fully grasp everything he says in lecture. The tests are tricky! Tips: perfect dimensional analysis & review all his powerpoints before the tests.
Freeman is nice and funny on occasion. His quizzes and exams are difficult because he only prepares you on the surface level and expects you to learn everything else on your own. People talk about great he is compared to other teachers but I don't see it. Gen chem is gonna be rough anyway and Freeman makes it bearable but that doesn't make him good
Freeman's a great prof, really clarifies things in lectures and makes sure people understand basic concepts. This is a pretty fast-paced course, but if you do the hw, come to office hours if you're having issues, and keep up with textbook readings, you'll be fine.
Freeman is a really caring professor. He's accessible outside of class, & it's much easier to understand the lesson in his office hours. Expect to do a lot of reading on your own, & go to any tutoring session possible! I doubt you'll find a CHEM101 professor that actually teaches the material without you reading or practicing material beforehand.
Chem 101 is hard, there's no getting around it. Dr. Freeman makes it more than bearable. He's a great guy and lecturer. The class can feel scattered at times, but it's inherent in the structure of the course. His individual office hours are really enjoyable and help make a huge class feel personal. Read, make study guides, practice. You can do it.
Dr. Freeman is a great CHEM 101 professor! He is very funny and tries to make chemistry more enjoyable. The class is difficult, but that is expected of CHEM 101. You need to do the readings and study in order to succeed, but it is possible. The exams are tough.
Freeman is a great option for CHEM 101. The class itself is difficult and the structure of it is very complex for whatever reason but Freeman makes it okay. Freeman really cares about his students and appreciates his chance to be a professor. His lectures will clarify everything in the textbook and he is a solid choice for the options available.
Fantastic teacher
chill professor. chem 101 can be hard, a lot of the learning is outside of class but freeman actually teaches concepts in concise ways that help.
Professor Freeman is a nice guy, but it takes forever to get grades back. It is hard to change your study strategies because you don't know how you did on a test until a month after you took it.
Professor Freeman was a great professor. He tells jokes, and does his best to explain material in class. The class is definitely hard, but with hard work an A is doable. Do all of the warm ups/graded homework. He is accessible outside of class and is big on making sure you succeed. GenChem is hard, so its on you to work hard if you want to do well.
CHEM101 at UNC is going to be hard not matter who you have. Freeman is a strong choice as he really knows what he is doing and a good lecturer. He is a really nice guy as well. However, he sucked at getting grades back so I had no idea how I was doing until about 3 weeks after each midterm. Overall very hard class but very good professor.
Dr. Freeman was my first college chemistry professor and he did a very good job of explaining topics in class. Office hours are what really help to understand concepts and he is very helpful during them to prepare for difficult tests. He genuinely cares about students and makes lectures engaging. Dr. Freeman was a great entrance to chemistry
Freeman is by far the best choice for 101 at UNC. He is caring and teaches the material in an effective way. Tests are difficult, but they are not that bad if you focus on UNDERSTANDING the material rather than memorizing how to do problems. He is very approachable and tries to ease your nerves about 101 being a weed out class (still is though)
He may have changed since I last had two years ago but then, he was not a good professor. He operated on a flipped classroom so didn't really lecture much at all. The exams were hard and what was more frustrating was not no practice material was given for the exams.
Great professor in that he is super nice and is really passionate about chemistry. The one problem I had with this class is that there was never any access to good practice problems. All we had were the graded homework and it left me really unprepared for tests. In chemistry, practice makes perfect and I feel like the lack of practice hurt me a lot
He is a good choice for CHEM. People need to understand that this a flipped classroom and you will have to teach yourself and there is no way around that if you want to pass. He is funny and caring and nice. Always ask clarification and practice a ton of problems.
Freeman is the better option between in him and Moy by far, but if there is another option I would chose someone else. He is nice and I think he genuinely cares, but he does not explain very well. The content of the class is more difficult if you don't know anything about chem so definitely pay attention and take the online homework seriously
Freeman is the best choice for chem 101!!! Chem will be hard regardless of who you take it with, but Freeman is a really nice guy and tries to make it bearable. You will have to teach yourself in chem, so that might be why some people are giving negative reviews.
Freeman makes chemistry very enjoyable and I thoroughly looked forward to going to his class every day. Chemistry is not an easy subject so all of the exams are standardized so the professor is just used for guidance. Its a flipped classroom so your success in the class depends on you effort to do the reading as well as extra problems. its possible
I took this class because I heard that he was the best teacher to take it with, let me reassure you, they all are awful, but I guess of all of the options there are, he is your best bet. Class was really difficult and the way these guys explain stuff, you should take some sort of chem class before this class because you won't understand anything.
Started off soooo slow and made us really behind and now is constantly rushing to get us on pace. Explains basic stuff pretty well but when it gets difficult stuff he tries to teach by using examples which usually does not work really well. Out of all the chem professors he is probably the best one but you will have to learn some material yourself.
CHEM 101 is very difficult no matter what. Freeman definitely cares and tries to help everyone understand. As with most UNC science courses, you will have to teach yourself a lot out of class so you can get what's going on in class.
Though I won't say that Freeman is the best teacher ever, but he's pretty cool and funny. He's a fair lecturer, but exams were fairly harder than the practice examschem dept loves to buffer up the exams each year. He's the "best" 101 instructor, but I would recommend taking CHEM 101 with a smaller class size. You have to work diligently for an A.
Dr. Freeman is a nice man who is clearly very passionate about chemistry; however, he does not care about the success of his students. He offers NO feedback on tests, he grades SUPER HARD, and he teaches in the most convoluted way possible. I don't advise taking this class if you haven't had AP Chem in high school because you WILL fail.
Best professor I've had at UNC. Great guy and has amazing lectures. 100% recommend
Out of the options we had for my semester I think Freeman was the best option. However, once we passed unit 4 and real information started to be presented, it was clear he thought everybody in the room had a phd and could work as fast as he could. It is a large lecture, so much homework, and final was nothing like the exams. Not my fav prof.
Decent professor but tends to be slightly arrogant. The amount of effort you put in definitely correlates to your grade. There is a good amount of homework and warm-ups throughout the semester but they are manageable and really help. For the most part, you will be teaching yourself like any other chem 101 class here though.
Although this class requires a great amount of effort, a high grade is attainable. Don't let people scare you about this classit is not a weed-out course. Go to class, review your notes, and make sure to do practice problems daily. You will be fine. One downside, however, is the rounding. I made a 92.5 and they refused to round this up to a 93.
Good prof! He is definitely the best choice for 101. He's funny and you can tell how much he loves what he's teaching.
Freeman is a solid professor, and definitely superior to the other CHEM 101 professors.
Chem 101 is going to be a challenge no matter who you take it with. Many of the negative comments here come from the fact that people think they can "study" the way they did in high school and make an A. Dr. Freeman is a good lecturer and he wants you to succeed in the class but you have to put in the work. He WILL help you if you put in the effort
Freeman is a good choice for 101 because the CHEM department at UNC is not the best. His lectures are good and easy to understand. The tests are stressful and worth so much of the grade so you really have to study and DO PRACTICE PROBLEMS in order to do well. Each little mistake really matters on the exams because they are so heavily weighted.
Really funny and gives good puns but was not very helpful in giving feedback and CHEM is always extremely test heavy. Do the readings and practice!!
Listen, I am not good at chemistry. But I can say that confidently because Dr. Freeman is a great professor that really cares and is super cool. Unfortunately, Chemistry was not my forte but he helped me a ton and whatever way he could. It's a big class with lots of resources. I would make a C in his class again any day.
The best group project I had at UNC - on chemists of underrepresented communities. Midterms are open for 24hr but very difficult and time-consuming - they require you to be creative. The final is a 10-minute presentation of a chemical pathway. Overall, he is a lenient grader, and you will get an A if you have a good chem foundation and participate.
I highly recommend taking the honors 430H with Freeman instead of the regular course. I am not an honors carolina student, but this class was small, and we got to know Dr. Freeman well. His exams were take-home and usually took a few hours to complete as they were heavily application and research based, but I always felt I learned during the exam.
Dr Freeman is there for you. He wants to see you succeed. BUT, it IS HARD!! You need to do your readings and practice problems, be active in class, and youll do fine.
Thomas Freeman is an amazing professor and makes sure you do well in his class. His quizzes require a lot of thinking and application rather than memorization. Readings are not required but do help with the lessons. While he does make it easy to gain points, don't take this class if you expect to not study or pay attention in class.
While Dr. Freeman was an okay grader, I wouldn't consider him a great teacher. He did not teach much and would instead summarize what we read in the textbook. The classes were often very boring and lecturey so it very important to read the textbook! Overall the class wasn't too hard but I wouldn't recommend him for a harder level.
