Wonderful! Always interesting, connecting things that you wouldn't think to connect, goofy sense of humor, never boring. Passionate about teaching, which is refreshing. Great teacher!!
Awesome! Again, he really does connect things you would never think to connect. Fun style of teaching, and his papers aren't always the usual 7-page intro, body, concl type essays...a lot of variety. Really cool guy.
I must be the only person in the world who thinks Gustafson in totally lame. I feel like I've wasted time and a lot of money in his class, I haven't learned ANYTHING. Easy A: take him. Learning something worthwhile: skip it.
I never care much to rate professors--but Gustafson is by far one of the best professors I've had at USC and at any university for that matter. He is very engaged and plugged into his student's life and is passionate about his subject.
I am in his class: LA: The fiction right now! OMG he is a terrific professor. I have never seen a teacher so passionate about LA and what he teaches as Prof. Gustafson! Very interesting; time flies by in a flash; about 100 pages per week of good reading

hes goofy, passionate and keeps u interested. dont try to take notes though cuz hes all over the place. midterm/final is a take home. u have to adjust to his teaching style though otherwise ur like the guy who didnt learn anything. but i think hes great.

Really passionate and interesting teacher.
A great teacher who is passionate about teaching. Although the class requires a lot of reading, nearly all the books are interesting and you learn a lot. it requires work on your part, but it you do the work you'll get a good grade.
i think prof gustafson is a great teacher for the american studies course (core req). he has us read really interesting stuff. you learn a lot and question new things after his course. i prefer his larger lectures to smaller, as in the american lit class he only lectures and rarely lets students speak.
Gustafson's class requires very little work. Each day a commentary is due that is a paragraph long (Really easy). There are 4 papers (Midterm and Final are 2 of the 4 papers) and are mainly busy work. Gustafson is very loud but makes class enjoyable. Only problem is the length of class, but otherwise a great, easy, and enjoyable class.
gustafson is an awesome guy and really wants his students to learn. he also brings in music that relates to what we're reading which is cool. there's a fair amount of reading, but if you read the main works you'll be fine. i would recommend this class.
took him for emotional intelligence. he's a great guy-extremely nice and very passionate about books. would take him again.
Took his Political Fiction and Film seminar. Very friendly man, helped all of the freshmen adjust to college life. Really laid back atmosphere, and does his best to make everyone feel comfortable. Absolutely worth it for all incoming freshmen to take a freshman seminar with him.
This professor is definitely at a large university, and might have had a more fulfilling career at a small college somewhere on the East Coast. He's an English professor at the wrong school. In his presence, the world has to revolve around him, but it doesn't. There are more remarkable people in the world than him, but he does his job pretty well.
unorganized, uncritical
His lectures are unorganized and rarely stick to the syllabus. No structure, but easy class.
I usually never rate professors, but I felt the need to warn innocent English majors: do not take a class with Gustafson if you want to learn anything! This class was a complete waste of my time. Gustafson is boring, uninformed, and repetitive. He chooses typical high school reading material and offers no new perspectives.
He is unorganized and extremely boring. I enjoyed the readings for his class (Amst 301) but he turned interesting readings into boring ones. He is also very biased and does not present an objective view...this is coming from someone who often shares the same opinions.
Some of the raters on here do not appreciate a good thing when they see it. Gustafson is one of the nicest, and most generous teachers you will ever meet; he assigns a lot of interesting reading as well. The people rating him poorly are complaining about structure, but really, nothing in Undergrad even matters, so shut it and enjoy yourselves.
Very energetic teacher. Nicest guy I've ever met. There is a lot of reading but he explains all the important readings in class. You will have a paragraph due in every class, a few essays, a midterm, and a final. Confusing, but fun class.
Confusing, boring, and way too much reading. Avoid this prof if you value your time.
I had fun in this class. His lecture is quite funny. I like the topics that he taught. But you need to go to class. If you go to class, you will get a lot of hit and tips from him. But if you don't go to class, you will be loss when you are taking his mid-term, assignments and final.
If you want a chill class, take this. He's an easy grader and since he rarely sticks to the syllabus, he ends up extending deadlines for papers. The midterm and final have 2 parts: take home essay and an easy 10 question multiple choice in-class part. He spends most of the class showing movies.
easy A. Guaranteed. Just go to class, and turn in the daily paragraph responses (that you can totally bs during the class period) and you're golden. Fun class.
Such a nice guy! At first, he comes off a little weird, but he's very sweet, genuine, and helpful. He gives you a lot to think about and brings up deep ideas in class, but the work is by no means hard. He won't ask that much of you...there's a lot of hanging out and watching movies.
He is an amazing professor. Assigns really interesting reading and is very energetic and dynamic in class. Most lower division courses are full of rouge memorization & useless test but Gustafson has great class discussions that relate to the readings and you come out of the class for a love for literature (if you didn't already have one!)
This was by far my favorite and easiest class of my first semester at SC but I guess that's because it was a 2 unit seminar. Either way, Gustafson is a very passionate and animated professor. He is a bit weird in a silly way but he's extremely helpful and insightful. Proposed a lot of thought provoking questions. Get him if you have a chance!
Easy class. Eccentric teacher. Interesting but annoying projects. EASY.
Easy class. Interesting books. Projects are a little too detail orientated, however, they're graded leniently. Lectures consists of discussion about the assigned readings followed by a film. He expects you to turn in a reflection of the readings to turn in each lecture ( you can do it during class). Overall enjoyable class!
It's an easy class overall and the projects are easy to BS. However, he is the most bizarre man and I felt like I was wasting my time by sitting in his lectures.
lack of feedback made me unnecessarily nervous - got an A. did all the papers the day of and barely studied for MT and final. make sure to listen in reviews. all the projects are super interesting - interview project, food ratings, movie reviews etc. super fun to have an arlt not just based on writing boring essays! professors passion is contagious
He is a great professor! May seems not so clear in lecture, but that is because he is talking about the reading materials! Those who do the reading will find the lecture easy to understand. Do the reading, and write your paper seriously, you will definitely learn a lot. His view about democratic thinking is useful and helpful.
Fun teacher but the class is no joke. Make sure to read designated important material and pay attention in class.
Pretty tough class
LA The Fiction. Definitely need to go to every class to succeed. Also, he's a little bit harsh (writ140-like) of a grader on the essays.
Awesome professor, you will learn a lot from him and his readings. Opens your eyes to many different viewpoints, however it is not an easy class and you should avoid it if you want to slack off.
He is a passionate teacher that knows and loves his subject. He will make you love it too. However, this comes with a ton of reading which is interesting but a bit overwhelming at the same time. Do not take this class for an easy A, you will have to read a lot and earn that grade yourself. Definitely an eye opening class.
Gustafson is a great guy trying to teach valuable stuff. His actual teaching of material is somewhat confusing but his assignments are simple. Easy class.
Cool professor. You should attend all lectures so you get the participation credit, but lecture is fun anyway, most of it is watching movies. He's kind of all over the place but if you're in class youll get the main idea Papers are fun and easy a lot of reading but all good novels
Professor Gustafson is a little insane, but in the best possible way. He's very passionate about literature and Los Angeles, and he's also hilarious. The class is slightly unorganized, but this doesn't affect your grade, so don't worry.
He really is insane, but that's only because he's so passionate about what he does. I have never in my life met a person who gets more excited about American Lit. It's impossible to leave this class without a greater understanding a respect for America and her writers. He gives quizzes and there's a lot of reading, but it's not too hard of a class.
One of the best professors at the entire University. His passion for the material, teaching in general, and his students is unrivaled. He wants you to put in the work and do the reading, and if you do so, you will succeed.
Great professor! He's pretty crazy and out there, but that's what I enjoyed most. He is flexible with due dates, and the assignments aren't too difficult either. 2 mini projects, 2 papers, 1 midterm paper+midterm quiz, and 1 final paper+quiz. Overall I really recommend this class!
BEST TEACHER EVER. TOOK HIS AMERICAN LITERATURE CLASS AND ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT. NOT ONLY IS HE INTERESTING, BUT HE'S FUNNY AND UNDERSTANDING.
Gustafson is a great professor that truly has a passion for history and teaching it. He cares about the well being of his students and really wants them to learn. His goal is not to just teach history, but to get students to think in a more humanitarian way. Lots of reading but it's not all necessary. take the class!
Professor Gustafson's craziness and commitment to his students are both above and beyond anything I've ever seen. However, I would not recommend this class if you have a demanding schedule because there is work due every class and large assignments due roughly every 2 weeks.
Professor Gustafason is easily the most engaging teacher I've had at USC. He's so excited about the course material and infectiously adorable. You can't help but smile at his excitement. He's also extremely accommodating and accessible. Plus, reading isn't necessarily mandatory. If you want to enjoy a teacher, you should take an AmLit with him.
I have never had a professor care more about his students than Thomas. He knew all 150 students by name, read EVERY paper and genuinely believed in them. The class itself... not the best. It is an "Easy A" but there is a LOT of busy work. It isn't hard, but it takes a lot of time. Love the teacher, not the class. Just a repeat of American history.
Dr. Gustafson is one of the best professors I've had at USC. His passion for literature is infectious, and it's obvious that he genuinely cares about his students. ENGL 263 literature was fun to read and the workload is definitely manageable. I would definitely recommend this class!
Overall, this is an okay class. I really don't know why you would take it for GE credit though. This class is 2 hours long, and he actually likes to lecture until the last minute. You have to attend every class to to earn credit. And he gives so many projects that take SOOOO MUCH time. If you want to spend a lot of time in this class, take it.
He genuinely cares about what he is teaching you. He made me completely reconsider the history of our nation, and he is all about looking at an issue from all different sides. Best class I have taken at USC. I enjoy coming to class because he does not want you to take notes. All you have to do is have an open-mind and listen to what he is saying.
Professor Gustafson is a character to say the least. He's extremely passionate about history and is absolutely hilarious. There's a lot of papers you have to do but if you follow directions you should get at least a B+. If you show up and do the homework you should get an A no problem.
Gustafson is extremely enthusiastic and passionate about this topic which unfortunately manifests itself in hour and fifty minute long lectures in which he babbles about whatever comes to mind. The smaller projects are easy A's but the midtermfinal project and quiz take ridiculously long to study for and complete.
Professor Gustafson is the best professor I have taken a GE course with. Even though it was a big lecture class, I felt a personal connection with him as he is open to office hours and truly wants to connect with each student. I have hysterically laughed in almost all classes and, even as an art major, found a true interest in American history.
Lectures seem like they're all over the place, but if you've done your reading, you will see that his lectures references the various reading assignments. You don't have to buy ALL the books, some he posts excerpts on BB. Projects are long--my writing assignments easily exceeded 10 pages. Avoid if you're 2nd 3rd yr premed w heavy course load
If you do everything, it's easy to get an A. However, attendance is mandatory, and he checks by requiring a paragraph response to the readings every single day. If you skip class and come in at the end to hand it in, he won't take it. No phones or laptops allowed. Assignments are extremely long, but there aren't any real papers. A good guy.
Please don't take this teacher if you have any level of previous understanding of the topics. He says the same thing for an entire semester. Its exhausting, boring, not educational, pedantic, and truly not what I expect from college professors. Yes, he's a nice guy - I would hardly describe him as a great teacher though. Mediocre at best.
Professor Gustafson is a bad teacher, in which he is unable to organize and articulate the class materials. He requires paragraph responses that are counted as your attendance. I really like the topic that is covered by this class. However, because of his inability to engage students, I hate this class.
He is a great professor, her really cares. He is not very clear and is a super slow grader. But really passionate about the subject, I would recommend taking him, one of the better English Professor I have had. Just very disorganized and lots of reading, but not totally necessary to do. He gives great feedback on papers and there are only 4 of them
He's a great professor! Extremely funny and helps keep lectures interesting. This has been one of the best classes I've taken at USC and I would definitely recommend taking Gustafson! There's a lot of effort required but if you are willing to work hard, he will notice that and reward you.
Such a funny professor. He is definitely one of my favorite professors. Like any GE class though, expect a lot of liberal thinking. Attendance required because you have to turn in reading responses for every class. Passionate about the subject. Note: he doesn't do much grading; TA does most; his grading is easy but the TA I had grades very tough.
Hands down, the best professor I had at USC so far. Relatable dude, insane, empathetic, funny, and extremely passionate about American Literature. Did not expect to enjoy this class so much!!! Lots of readings, but they are definitely worth it.
You can only fail the course because of poor participation and/or lack of work. The course requires reading daily but it is not time-consuming! Reading will benefit later for the exams! The course has 4 easy time-consuming projects. If you receive an A in the midterm you will do great in the final. IF YOU ARE A FRESHMEN TAKE THIS COURSE!
Subject is really interesting, and Gustafson is passionate and funny. But he expects you to read SO much--like a book a week by the end, and countless long articles at the beginning. Papers take FOREVER and you need to read to complete them. He gives hints in lecture. Spent more time on this class than my others combined. Would not recommend.
Subject is difficult, and he expects you to read to work for the grade you get. There are quite a few projects, but they were engaging and were not straight papers. You can probably pull off a decent grade even if you don't do all of the reading (he even admitted that if you do 80-90% of the reading you should get an A).
Guarantee that you get an A as long as you turn in all the assignments. Required weekly reading and homework but I literally didn't read anything and did the homework during lecture right before it was due. People complain it's too much work but it's still a guaranteed A so take this class because he's super passionate and hilarious too!
Such a caring professor! Easy an A as long as you turn in your assignments. Really cares about his students and teaching them information that actually matters. If you want to laugh in class and have a professor that's actually passionate about what he teaches then take this, especially if you need a B GE requirement!
He honestly is one of the best professors I have taken so far. He does talk a lot, but he has interesting things to say.
Don't go to his office hours unless you have at least half an hour. He talks a lot, but he's passionate about his work. He takes forever to grade, but he tries his hardest to make sure you get that A. The assignments are long but fun to do which is appreciated. He puts 98% of the readings online!!! check there before you buy any of the books!
if you need a GE you should take this. if you show up to lectures and pay attention, you can half-ass all the assignments and get an A. he asks for 2 quotes from the reading and your thoughts on them as a hw/attendance, you can do that literally in 30min before class. This guy is totally nuts, which makes lectures exciting and interesting.
Awesome teacher. Passionate about what he does and the lectures aren't bad to sit through either, half the time there are movie clips. You'll have to do outside stuff for the class a little bit but it makes you appreciate the school and where you're at more. Can talk to him outside of class easily, and should definitely take if you have GEs needed
A little bit of an oddball (in a good way!) but so inspiring and passionate. Easy to talk to, counts attendance by a short paragraph on the assigned readings he asks you to turn in each class, if you miss a class you can turn in a makeup paragraph and still receive the credit. Also gives you a chance to rewrite essays for a better grade.
Great Professor, not such an easy A cause there is some work involved with a scavenger hunt and the papers, but manageable. Very funny and you watch a lot of movies in class. Guaranteed A-. Loves Soccer.
-Lectures are EXTREMELY boring. His lectures go on random tangents and I always feel like I learned nothing. -Take Eike for TA (TA grades most papers, Professors view of you doesn't matter as much) -Show up to turn in daily reading response, so you have to go to every lecture -Extra credit offered -Extremely easy to do well on papers
Professor Gustafson is EXTREMELY passionate about his class. He assigns very time consuming assignments but they are graded pretty easily so everyone ends up with either an A or high B. If you need a GPA booster take this class.
He is one of the worst teachers Ive had at USC. He believes that teach history out of order is more effective than teaching it in chronological order. He is extremely boring in class and makes you turn in a daily reading every class. Yes this class is extremely easy, every assignment is busy work and you will come away with learning nothing.
Dr. Gustafson is hands down the BEST professor I've ever had at USC. The class is very easy -- 2 take home assignments (fun), 1 take home midterm, & 1 take home final (in addition to reading responses, which only have to be about a sentence). I recommend this class to anyone looking for an easy GE or anyone who wants to learn about history.
Gustafson is an amazing professor who truly cares about his students and their success. He's incredibly passionate about emotions and emotional intelligence. He has the most lively and energetic personality and makes each class entertaining. He has a lot of tangents about his personal life, but that's what makes him great. Crazy yet inspirational.
Too much writing. Barely learned anything. Easy class, however, show up and pass. As long as you do all the parts that he asked you in an assignment, you'll get at lowest an A-. Would not take again due to long lectures. REALLY REALLY REALLY LONG LECTURES WITHOUT ELECTRONIC DEVICES
Prof. Gustafson is such a sweet and caring person. Once a semester he invites all his classes to a small cookout at his house. He really want you to learn, he's always super excited and happy to teach and his energy travel onto you. Daily reading assignments, 4 big assignments but they're doable. 10/10 recommend!
This class is an easy A IF you do a fair amount of the readings. I did 80% of the readings and made an anthology which was really helpful for the midterm and the final. You need to invest a lot of time and effort into this class but if you do, you'll get an A. He's slightly weird but very sweet and welcoming so go to office hours! A great class.
Easiest class I have ever taken. There is 3 simple but time-consuming "projects/papers" but all are graded lightly. Lectures are INCREDIBLY boring but you dont have to listen/ pay attention because there are no tests. The midterm and final are both watching in-class videos and writing a sentence or 2 about them
The most boring lecturer ever. Class was easy (just 2 simple papers, take-home midterm/final), but he adds weird things to force you to go to lecture. ie: a daily paragraph about the readings for the class, as well as a question of the day you would only know if you went to lecture. Easy class, boring as hell, the choice is up to you.
He was awesome!!! Will totally take his class again!
He gives a lot of busy work and you don't learn much. The reviews on this site make this class sound easy, but this class is difficult for a GE.
Very interesting dude, makes the lecture bearable. Lots of reading, but the reading is all novels that are actually very interesting, rather than a textbook. The best part about this class is that your grade is directly proportional to the amount of work you put in. Only a few points are from "tests", most are homework assignments.
He's very kind, but... The class is 100% based on participation. But there's a ton of participation required: 5 busywork essays (each 13-26 pgs long), long-ish reading responses twice a week, 5-10 readings per week, and fine print in the syllabus that reserves him the right to fail you if you miss more than 7 of the class's (very boring) lectures.
Easy to get an A if you put in the work but this class is A LOT of work...5 essays (all around 20 pages), daily response papers to the readings, and a group project in discussion. You don't learn anything in class but you have to go (if you miss more than 7 you will automatically fail). Tests are worth 6% of the grade. I repeat, A LOT of work.
Professor Gustafson is extremely caring and easy to talk to. The class involves a lot of work in the form of readings and papers but it is not hard to do well in it. He is a little eccentric but very passionate about the subject. Lectures are unrelated and sometimes boring but he shows a lot of clippings in class. Very helpful outside class.
The lectures are incredibly boring and unrelated, pretty reading-heavy class but the novels are fairly interesting and I feel like I learned a fair amount from the books. I dreaded lecture because it was 2 hours and difficult to follow. Easy A if you do the work...
easy A as long as you hit the guidelines. your TA alight suck but if you go to his office hours hell change your grade. it is a lot of work but it is a guaranteed A. he doesnt like technology in his class. GPA booster for sure.
Very interesting selection of books. Truly caring professor. Lectures can be boring at times, but its one of the more layback GE's at SC.
I love this professor because he is really passionate about what he teaches. It's a lot of work but you learn a lot
Prof Gustafson has the most boring lectures in the world and sadly you are only allowed 7 absences, otherwise, you will automatically fail the class. You are also not allowed technology which does not help, but the class is so easy that I would recommend taking it for that reason alone.
This class is rather easy. The only project that will consume most of your time is the midterm and final anthology. But, you can always run it by him before submitting it and he will give you feedback. More often than not he will say it's perfect but the TA will grade you harder. Watch out for that. Besides that pretty easy A. Take him if you can!
Such a good professor! The homework for every class is a reflection (1-2 paragraphs) based on a quote from the reading for that day. Super easy to do all he wants to see is that you actually read it. The books he assigns seem like a lot but are really interesting and you get to watch a couple of movies. Probably 2-3 big assignments all semester.
The most passionate prof I've ever had - he made me love the course. The lectures can at times be hard to follow but honestly it's not bad. HW every night is a 2 paragraph reflection on reading, and you can do it in class. He assigns a lot but u don't need to do it all. He wants every student to get an A and cares a lot. Al Brown is a good TA too
I took 2 of his classes, got As in both and more importantly I grew as a human being. I have never in my life met someone who is as overflowing with compassion as Professor Thomas Gustafson is. He truly puts his heart and soul into his work. His class has a lot of assignments, but they're graded easily and His TAs are extremely accessible and kind.
homework is a 2 paragraph response for every class, which can be annoying. BUT you can do it in class so its manageable! prof. gustafson is WONDERFUL, passionate and a great guy to talk to outside of class. ive genuinely learned so much from this course and i loved the books we read + films we watched. most people get As. take him if you can!
You have to go to class and do daily journals based on reading. You dont have to complete all the readings , just enough to write a little bit about it. You dont really know your grade until the end but it ends up going well if you go to class and out in effort
Easy professor. Make sure to turn in the daily assignments and papers on time and should be an easy A. He wants you to get an A so it shouldn't be hard at all to do. Sometimes he is unclear what he wants, but don't stress as long as you do it, he will give you an A. Take his class.
Super sweet prof and really cares about his students. Easy to get an A, he wants to give u an A. This class is a lot of reading (its ENGL class, its expected) & a good amount of writing but the writing is all about your personal interpretations -- so super easy assignments, just time consuming. Learned a ton & super interesting curriculum.
If you need to satisfy a GE, take Gustafson's Los Angeles class. It was super interesting getting to learn about the recent history of LA and the scavenger hunt we had to do was awesome. Learned so much about the city and have a greater appreciation for it after taking this class, Gustafson is a great choice.
Professor Gustafson is a very sweet man with lots of passion for his teaching material. Personally, I felt like this class was an insanely high amount of work for a intro general ed. You'll be reading hundreds of pages every few nights and having to write 1-2 page reflections before each class period. Be prepared to really grind out some writing.
He is honestly an amazing teacher. Even though the workload is a lot for someone looking to earn an easy A, as an engineering student, I can say its very manageable and since the class is extremely interesting it compensates for the workload. He is very understanding and modern, the type of teachers who are super passionate and were born to teach.
Amazing professor with wonderful TAs. His assignments aren't too hard, but I would come in with writing experience. I learned so much about LA and the culture of the city, and would really recommend this class. He is super accommodating and understanding and wants you to learn and grown as a person. TAs rock, they want you to do well.
My favorite professor I have taken at USC!
My favorite professor of all time. HE IS INCREDIBLE! Dont pass up on taking his LA class. He plays lots of movies and is super passionate about his lectures. Hes honestly just the sweetest guy, and he tries to keep students engaged. Hes extremely understanding given the online situation. IM SO SAD THE CLASS IS ENDING IM ACTUALLY SUPER UPSET
Prof Gustafson is so nice & understanding and you can tell he truly loves teaching this class. He is very passionate and enthusiastic when he lectures and plays a lot of movies/music during class. There are LOTS of readings and writing assignments where he expects a certain level of depth but they're graded fairly and easily. Highly recommend!
Professor Gustafson is one of the nicest professors I've had. He was really caring and accomodating during online classes and always shared his own experiences with the class. There is a lot of reading however and 2 paragraph responses and 1 question of the day are due each class. No tests but there are projects and papers.
I enjoyed Dr. Gustafson's L.A. course! Great GE-B -- the course doesn't require a lot of memorization. Lectures are mostly films/music clips. Can be done asynchronously. He made a lot of adjustments to assignments to alleviate pandemic stress! There are daily homework and a lot of readings. Graded on a lot of essays so BE prepared to write.
Gustafson is such a kind and caring prof. Bc of the pandemic our final was just a few questions about our experience in his class and he basically let us decide our course grades. Daily homework but it's graded cr/nc so it's manageable. 3 unique papers/assignments, midterm, and final. TAs can grade harshly sometimes, but interesting & easy GE B
Prof Gustafson's class was really interesting, although it was pretty heavy on reading. You can tell he really cares about the stuff he teaches, and he's really passionate about the subject. Kind and understanding prof, would take again 100%
This man is elite. He still sends me movie recommendations and his stories are so genuine. He's an incredible person, you'll miss out not taking this class.
2-page daily assignments, research & interview paper, take-home midterm/final. Gustafson cares a lot and the TA's are easy graders. That said it's certainly not an easy GE. If you don't do the readings midterm/final are both very difficult.
This class was really fun and easy. Lectures are extremely long, but he'll ask a QOTD at the end that is crucial to every homework assignment. Honestly a lot of work, but the readings are interesting and if you do your work you'll get a good grade.
Professor Gustafson is the most enthusiastic professor I've ever had, to the point where he *very* excitedly yells during lecture (in a good way.) There's reading responses due before every class but he accepts late work, and as long as you put effort into the papers (I think there's 3?) you should pass with flying colors
GREAT professor for a GE! Cares way more about students finding the material interesting and offering learning experiences than giving out tough grades. There are a few projects and no real exams! Inspiring prof, highly recommend!
Took his Los Angeles, city, novel, movie class and found the lectures long and tedious. Assignemnts on reading every class, but you can skim and get by usually. The subject matter was very interesting however being from Los Angeles. If you want to learn about your city's history with an engaging but lecture heavy teacher, this class may be for you
I loved this professor! Gustafson is a sweetheart and it shows through his teaching style. He's a passionate teacher, which made me actually look forward to doing the relatively small amount of homework he assigned. Would highly recommend taking his course!!
Gustafson is a very passionate professor and really cares about the materials, that being said. He is very disorganized and sparatic lecturer. Assignments are unnecessarily long and the curriculum is non linear and hard to follow
I really enjoyed this class and the professor! I highly recommend ENGL174 to anyone who wants to learn more about emotional intelligence. The professor is so passionate and taught me so much that I haven't learned in other classes. Be prepared to write a lot of responses to readings, but honestly so worth it. By far my favorite class at USC.
Professor Gustafson was a breath of fresh air, He is very passionate about the subject and does his absolute best in making sure his students understand the material. The course has a few projects, simple homework, and there is very easy grading, Take this class.
One of the best classes and professors out there at USC, take this class you will not regret it 100%. Easy A.
TAKE ENGL 174! This emotional intelligence is the only course of its kind here at USC and I would recommend everyone take it as it can be applied to any major/background. If you are interested in emotions and how to become a better human being, take this course! This class can be heavy in reading, but the content and professor make it worth it!
Professor Gustafson is awesome! I took his ENGL176 class and found it very interesting, his enthusiasm for the subject will rub off on you! He gives quality feedback on assignments and lets you know when you did a good job.. something I really appreciated. He assigns paragraph responses for each class, if you put effort into those you'll do well.
Never thought I'd give a five to someone who struggles to work blackboard but here we are. Gustafson is super passionate about what he does and cares about the students. The class is so much better if you attend, but most people didn't. His class definitely changed how I think and in that sense changed my life. Highly recommend
If you need a GE, take this. Easiest A of your life lol
I usually dread going to large, GE lectures, but Professor Gustafson's class has been awesome! The lectures can sometimes seem like they drag on, but the content is interesting and it's clear that he knows what he teaches and is passionate about it. He incorporates his personal experiences and it makes the lectures more interesting.
Gustafson is one of the most passionate professors I've ever taken. He's very erratic, and sometimes lecture is really hard to follow. Must attend lecture for the Question of the Day, which he gives out at the end of the lecture and is required for the assignment due for next class. Two assignments per week due before each lecture, a bit tedious.
This man is great. He is very erratic and funny during lectures. The lectures do feel long and can be boring but it is an easy A. The two only essays you write are graded a bit pickier by the TAs. Professor is very passionate about L.A. You have to go every class to get the question of the day but if you have a friend in there it helps.
As long as the lectures are and as tedious as the HW is, I still have to give Prof. Gustafson a 5. He's so passionate about what he teaches and incredibly flexible/understanding, couldn't ask for a kinder prof. 2 assignments per week can get old but they're easy. Overall a fairly easy A, just get the QOTD and keep up with HW and you'll be fine.
I want to rate this class a 4, but I cant bring myself to bc professor gustafson is just so nice. His extreme passion for the material is contagious. That being said, the lectures can feel extremelyyy long. But regardless, still definitely recommend this course I have really enjoyed learning more about the history of LA
Prof Gustafson is like the irl version of Sikowitz from Victorious- in the best way possible! He is super eccentric but really sincere and kind. His lectures are really inspirational and thought provoking. There are about 8 books we read for the class which can be demanding (skimming recommended). Class projects/final are a breeze! Its a good class
He was an amazing professor. His lectures, it's true, were not necessary to doing well in the class, and most involved showing movies and/or documentaries. But if you have the option to take Gustafson, you should jump on it. His projects, tests, and hw are all easy As and he's the most passionate professors I've seen yet.
Great professor! Very passionate about his teaching and very accessible outside of class hours. Attendance wasn't mandatory, but is worth it imo. Easy A, but lectures were almost two hours for the GE and there was a decent amount of reading required. Paragraph responses, one midterm + final. Both projects. Basically what you put in, you get out.
Probably one of the best professors I've had at USC.
Professor Gustafson is a lovely, caring professor who wants you to LEARN. Opening my heart & mind to this class did not disappoint! Easy midterm & final, simple projects, easy assignments. All I can say is please show up to class; it's sad not seeing people turn out towards the middle of the year when he cares about us so much. Informative & easy!
A lot of reading involved but Gustafson makes the class both easy and enjoyable. Planning on taking more classes from him in the future.
great dude
Take him if you want an easy A. BUT get ready to write A LOT, five assignments, each takes up to 8 hours + weekly responses + 1 TA group presentation
If you are looking for an easy A GE, I definitely recommend this course! As long as you submit all the assignments with a bit of effort, you will get an A. It does require a lot of reading and writing so be prepared for that in the major assignments he assigns. Other than that, he is a really nice guy that makes the course as engaging as possible.
Get ready for some enthusiastic lectures, however, as the semester goes on they kind of drag a bit. The workload is super manageable. Professor Gustafson is super funny, caring, and kind. Easy grader with some enjoyable assignments.
5/5 for Thomas for some of the most inspirational lectures I've ever had in SC. 3/5 for my TA who... to their credit still graded leniently but was kinda hard to talk to in discussion sections. Be prepared for A LOT OF WORK but a straightforward A. Expect to spend more time on this course than the other GEs but you basically get a guaranteed A.
BEST GE EVER - must take this course for GE-B! Prof. Gustafson is exceptionally inspiring and passionate about love & literature. Made me (STEM major) consider minoring in something lit. related. You get as much from this class as you put in - you can either dive into the readings and grow tons or skim them and get by just fine. Highly recommend.
Professor Gustafson is a g. He really cares about the course and even more about the students. He was a super laxed grader and attendance was a suggestion, but even still the course concepts rung through very clearly. he really knows how to convey history in a way to get you to really care. 10/10 professor
Easy straightforward class but be prepared to do a lot of work.. If it's to fill a GE requirement I would honestly look for a different class. The workload for this class coupled with the fact that you have to commit over 4 hours per week attending (since he heavily emphasizes attendance) it really isn't worth it.
Professor Gustafson is one of the kindest, most empathetic professors I have met. You can tell he truly cares for each and every one of his students. The class itself felt a little long at times, but the workload is definitely manageable. I'm happy I was able to take one of his classes!
Prof. Gustafson is a very kind, understanding, and passionate person. He is willing to help you with assignments, but grading is very much heavy on the TAs. However, there is a lot of reading followed by an assignment for every class, so this class takes a lot of time. The projects were time-consuming but not very hard, and it's an easy A!
Prof. Gustafson was a very enthusiastic lecturer and cared a lot about the content of the course. The lectures are a bit long sometimes, and there are many assigned readings before each class, but the work is relatively easy and pretty straightforward. There aren't any tests or quizzes, and most of your grade comes from homework and projects.
Prof is extremely passionate but lectures can get a bit boring bc it's 2 hrs long in large lecture hall (and prof doesn't allow laptops). Homework is easy but takes a lot of reading. Assignments are easy and tests are easy. Reading material is very valuable!
He is cool. Like easyyyy class. If you show up and put effort into your papers its chill. But 2 hours with no laptop and phone got old quick and if he sees you on your phone he will call you out. the papers were easy af-- the worst things were the questions of the day. You had to go to every class to get those and its annoying. Easy GE tho
if you haven't taken 176 w prof g, you really haven't maximized your full USC experience. this class was everything & more, and has been my favorite class i've taken at USC this far. if you love LA or want to learn more about LA, THIS IS THE CLASS FOR YOU. prof g is literally a comedian and should pursue standup tbh & made me fall in love w LA :,)
The professor is a very kind, genuine, and funny guy. The class is very unique, and rewarding if you're willing to invest some time into it. The work is easy, but there is kind of a lot of it given that the class is a GE. It's an Easy A as long as you do all of the homework/projects and put in some effort.
Prof.Gustafson is a very kind and caring professor. He is very knowledgeable and excited to teach.
As a person, Professor Gustafson is nice enough. As a professor, his lectures are rambling and repetitive - basically an entire semester of "listen to your heart!" There are a lot of readings, some interesting (others full of stereotypes/microaggressions), but because of the quantity, there's never enough time to discuss anything in depth.
idk why the last person so mad for but Prof.G is like a blessin from heaven.I love this man so much. He's inspire me to do a lot more in my life and it just truly depends on how much you listen to his words of wisdom.if you genuinely want to grow mentally as a person then take this class, its also an ez A, you just gotta speak from the heart
This course has a heavy workload, you need to read and write a lot to keep up with the assigned homework and major papers, but prof. Gustafson grades pretty easily. Lectures are 2 hours long and incredibly boring, he rambles about random topics or plays random videos the whole time. You also cannot use electronics in lecture, he WILL call you out!
I didn't love Professor Gustafson like a lot of others did. He was extremely lecture heavy and rambled on about topics that weren't necessarily useful to the overall curriculum. I can't say I learned much in his class despite the content. He doesn't allow his students to join in on discussions or topics at all.
I loved his course even though I was a non English major. His enthusiasm and positive mentality made every class interesting and enjoyable. His passion for American literature made it easy to also be interested, and all around was a great, caring professor.
Nice and funny guy but the 2hr lectures were a snooze fest. He asks a QOTD for attendance at the end of class so a lot of ppl would just show up in the last 20 mins. The amount of readings per class made it impossible to go into depth and most ppl just skimmed them. That being said, it is still a pretty easy A if you complete all the assignments.
Professor Thomas Gustafson! You are the best best best. You might not see this, but thank you for meeting with me in office hours for our emotions class. You taught me so much more than just the classroom, and helped me to address my own issues outside of class involving my family. You are a beacon of light in this world. My sister is doing better!
The professor is super caring and passionate about teaching emotional intelligence, and I would say I learned a lot in the class. He does assign a lot of readings and although some are interesting you are fine with a summary. Assignments are easy and inspirational. Great GE
One of the nicest and funniest professors. Cant use your laptops but makes the class really interesting. Definitely likes to lecture a lot so be ready for that.
He is awesome. Definitely unique but in the best way. Really wants to TEACH which is great.
176 was so much fun and mostly because of him. He genuinely cares so much about what he teaches which makes class interesting. Lectures can sometimes be hard to get through but still good. Would recommend.
An easy course overall with 5 projects (two as midterm and final) and daily participation points are a big part of the grade. Lectures can drone, but you get to watch movies sometimes. He will call you out in front of everyone for using your phone in lecture. Can tell he really, REALLY cares about what he teaches. Kind guy too, wants you to do well
I loved this class so much. Highly recommend it to anyone interested in emotional intelligence. Assignments are not work intensive and very interesting. Readings and discussions are thought provoking. Only drawbacks: paragraph responses to readings for each class (easy to do without reading them though) and he does not allow technology in class.
this prof can only be described as interesting. if you really care about the subject it's cool, but as someone just needing credit i didn't love it, that's just me. super easy GE but man the busy work & readings are INSANE. no electronics in lectures, so the 2 hours is hard to sit through. but prof is so passionate and loves what he does
