Really enjoyed the a&p sequence with this professor. Very laid back kind, down to earth of guy. Exams are tough but not overwhelming.
Dr. Hancock is an inspiration! Love his lecture style, he opts to handwrite his notes and draw out diagrams as he goes along as opposed to boring PowerPoint slides. I felt very fufilled by the A&P series, exams are tricky!
Professor Hancock is an amazing professor. I love his teaching style, he doesn't do power points and hand writes his notes. Yes, this is a downer for some students, but I learned so much more that way and I gained a lot of good information that I would otherwise forget in a powerpoint slide. It's a very tough course, and exams, so study the notes!
I enjoyed taking the Anatomy series with Dr. Hancock. He like a lot of people have said, hand writes his notes. I can see how that may turn off some people off, I personally didn't mind it. It's something different from the usual power point slides of most other professors. Bottom line this class taught me a lot and I will miss this class.
Hancock tells what he wants you to read in the textbook (this is not a class where you read the chapter after chapter after chapter). He assigns optional problems set and these help out a lot and they provide a way for you to actually communicate and bond with him. Go to office hours - he's super approachable and helpful :)
He is a nice guy!! But his teaching style is different! He will write the entire lecture as notes on the screen. No pics no video nothing. So if you take amazing notes you will do fine as his tests are from the notes. If you have ADD like me it's a challenge! the material is dense! But he will try to explain as best as he can!
Hancock - He is a brilliant, witty, kind and entertaining man. Thus far I have thoroughly enjoyed his class and his teaching style. He straight up tells you what you need to know, no if's, and's, but's or gimmicks. If he says it, or writes it, you need to know it, all else is dust. His tests are straight forward and (IMO) easy. Just do the work A
Dr. Hancock is an inspiration and mentor as well as a great professor. He hand writes all his lectures during class which means you can understand and keep up with everything he teaches. That said, he writes FAST so be prepared to take notes. Lectures are recorded, relisten to his lectures for clarity and study hard. You will love him and get an A!
He is a difficult grader, and words the tests awkwardly. Sometimes the questions have no answers, until you point it out to him during the actual exam. He said, "It is up to you guys to figure out if I say something incorrectly." The amount of effort you put doesn't correlate to the grade you should get. This is an unreasonably hard class.
Study really hard, take good notes and do the problem sets and you'll get an A it's a hard class it's not suppose to be easy. You are suppose to put a lot of work into it. He is open to help tons of time, email him and he will help you
I loved mammalian physiology. It was hard work and requires a lot of attention. But if you understand the concepts the test shouldn't be too hard
Dr hancock is a fantastic teacher. He is approachable, kind, and wants to help you succeed. The class is hard, and there is a lot of material so be prepared to study. Don't take the class if you can't commit to the work. He grades tests on a curve, which I find very generous. Definitely recommend him!
I have taken the whole A&P series with Dr. Hancock. He lectures off his notes and gives out problem sets before the exams (DO THEM!). His exams are hard because there is just so much material. He doesn't curve. Exams are 60% and lab is 40% of your grade. Do well in lab and that should "curve" your grade. Make sure to go to open lab!!
Hancock cares about his subject and the students. i took him for BIO 302 and took Degrauw for 301 and 303. if you prefer handwriting your own notes and using the text book to supplement his lectures i would go with him. is tests are somewhat "easier" than Degrauw's but he does not curve. personally i preferred Degrauws's lectures.
Wow. This guy loves to write notes in class, which are close to useless for studying, and nothing else. No diagrams, images, powerpoint etc. Does not give answers for study materials so you have no idea where you are. The absolute most dry teaching style is what you can expect. Read your book and stay hope unless you want to nap. Lectures are poor.
I have no idea how this professor scores high on this website. He is a very bad teacher and really just skirts over information without any clarity on what is important to focus on. Sure, a person can just memorize everything and be set, but that is unrealistic. NO powerpoints, only jots notes, no diagrams. Difficult to follow this guy.
Exercise an interest and do your problem sets. You will succeed. AMAZING TEACHER! AWESOME GUY!
Dry teaching. The "tools" that are given for you to "succeed" are terrible. No powerpoints, you get chicken scratch notes that are useless since they contain little context. Instead of giving practice/study guides you get worksheets AFTER he lectures. Prepare to spend wasting time flipping through. Large proportion wasting time to learning.
Great guy, huge help, hard class. This class will teach you how to study and more importantly, how to try in school.
Dr. Hancock is hands down the best professor I've ever had. He gives you all the tools you need to succeed, all you need is a little motivation. His notes are straight forward--rewrite them for your studies. Lectures are super interesting. He doesn't give answers to problem sets but if you work hard at them and ask questions he will help you.
I prefer Hancock's handwritten notes to ppt as it forces him to slow down and explain concepts. He sometimes disagrees with things that are said in the text. That said, the text is a GREAT resource. Do the problem sets as soon as you get them! There's no answer key for them but you can clarify with him via email or office hours. Will take for 302.
A Great Anatomy professor, really clear about the material and is clear about what is expected of his students.
I really enjoy Dr. Hancock's style of teaching. I have a profound interested in the subject, so his lectures are extremely interesting to me. He explains material clearly, gives study guides that are extremely helpful, is always available outside of class, and is super nice and friendly. I took Degrauw first term and definitely prefer Hancock.
Great lectures, great class. Dr. Hancock is one of the most approachable professors I've had at PSU, a very nice guy who wants students to succeed. A good grade requires paying attention in lecture and doing the problem sets. If you just want to memorize power point slides, this is not the prof for you.
Excellent professor. Great at breaking things down. Teaches you exactly what you need to know for the exam so that you're not guessing and scrambling to learn EVERYTHING. Great at testing logic; occasionally tests memorizable knowledge, but that's to be expect of an a&p class. Overall, highly recommended.
I took Professor Hancock's course at 8am and he was engaging enough to keep me awake for the full 3 hours. It was challenging but if you work hard you will be appropriately rewarded.
Dr Hancock became my professor during a difficult time in my life. He coached me personally to help me succeed when I was struggling with anxiety. He also uses a unique presentation style that really helps students keep up with the lectures so if you miss something, you can catch up. His tests only cover what was presented in lecture.
A&P is by far the most challenging course I've taken at PSU. One thing I appreciate about Hancock is the convenience of lectures being recorded via "echo 360" and posted on D2L - makes missing lecture not that big of a deal. His lecture notes are VERY messy, so make sure to rewatch lectures to make better notes. DO THE PROBLEM SETS!
If you want to spend three days a week attempting to decipher his handwriting then being tested with questions that have no or multiple correct answers then this is the professor for you! From attempting to read his chicken scratch to him saying that the textbook is incorrect in many different sections you'll have a blast trying to pass.
#1 Do well on lab quizzes and exams. I recommended getting Complete Human Anatomy to study! Time consuming but easy points! #2 Watch his lectures online, take notes of everything he said, and do problem sets! Whatever he said will be on the exam 90% of the time! Harder than lab, He also curves. So follow 2 rules and you will get A
Dr. Hancock is an extraordinary teacher first and foremost. He works with students to ensure their comprehension of the material and offers a robust array of study materials from prelecture summary notes to optional problem sets to practice exams to office hours. Failure to thrive in this class can only be due to a lack of intrinsic motivation.
I can't help but compare Hanock (my prof for AP 2 and 3)to Ed Degrauw (my prof for AP 1) who was simply amazing, and that might not be fair. Hancock is unorganized plain and simple. It is becoming increasingly obvious to me that he doesn't know what he wants us to know i.e. the curriculum for this course is not complete! Unacceptable! Frustrating!
I am not a very smart guy. But Dr. Hancock answered emails, clarified everything, including dozens of my own inquiries. If you don't take initiative to fill out all problem sets, and don't have time to watch lectures on Echo, you'll bear the brunt. Lectures and google were all that I needed, but I listened multiple x's. Take note of every word.
Dr. Hancock knows his stuff, but he's taught the same material for so long that I think he forgets how to make material make sense to those seeing it for the first time. It's also pretty clear when he goes into autopilot and goes through the motions. His tests are really difficult, but he curves the whole class at the end.
Its impossible to be full time in work and school with this class. He tells you that you should be able to come to his office hours and study everyday after class- no excuse. God forbid you have and emergency. He majored in math and expects too much from you. He is not even close to being a good professor. Find another class to fulfill your req.
Wonderful professor and lecturer. Definitely makes sure you work for it. He makes the material very interesting and does add a bit of math. Book use was minimal for me, as I just studied off the slides and did well. Accessible outside of class and incredibly smart, professional, and organized.
Took the condensed class. The lecture part was fine and he makes it interesting. He also gives out thicc 20page summary notes as well as recordings of lectures. The brutal part is anatomy. hope ur ta for lab is chill and doesn't wanna vent the regret of pursuing a phd at PSU to the practicals lol. he also curves ((:
The class is disorganized as a whole. He rambles through the lecture at full speed; when this happens, there aren't any questions to slow him down as nobody understands what he is saying. Kinda an anxious little squirrel frothing at the mouth. Hope your lab TA isn't some antisocial, sarcastic ornithologist who vents choosing PSU for their PhD.
Idk where the disorganized comments are coming from, as he is 100% the most organized and easy to access professor I've ever had (bad, only because he's ruined me for other professors). The content is SUPER specific and difficult but he's a great instructor and I'd take him again in a heartbeat. The class is hard but worth it.
I took ANP with Hancock for the complete series. He is a tough teacher. You really need to know the details and pay attention to the lectures. I hardly used the book and studied off of his power points. I wished that lab was a credit class instead of a combination grade with lecture.
This professor makes this course way harder than its suppose to be. His exams are worded in a way that makes it confusing. He writes all of the questions by himself so the language is difficult to understand at times. Would not recommend if you want to keep a good GPA and grades. This guy makes you earn more than learn anything.
Not worth ruining your GPA taking this terror class. Hancock isn't a very good professor at explaining concepts within this class. Even though he has an abundance of knowledge towards this subject, teaching definitely isn't his forte. Exams are ridiculously harder than its suppose to be and very confusing. Get ready to make anatomy your life!
Hancock makes me want to go back and pursue my computer science major after I had dropped out. You are expected to read his thick 30 page summary notes (all written by him) or read the textbook for any clarification on his confusing concepts. He speeds through his lectures full on Rambo mode and nobody understands a single thing by the end.
Ridiculously hard class. I'm a Junior science major, and I've never gotten a C before this class. I put in so many hours reviewing lectures, going through hundreds of problem set questions, and never got above a c on his exams. I took part 1 of the series somewhere else, super easy. You studied the material, and did well. Not the case here.
It took me a while to get used to his teaching style. What works for me may not work for you but looking at his lectures on echo and taking my own notes helped me. It is time consuming but you go at your own pace, you can stop and rewind if needed. Pay attention to what he focuses on during lecture sometimes its hard to weed out info.
Awesome prof. He is funny and passionate about anatomy and physiology. I loved all of the class even the parts that i found less interesting. He works hard to provide resources for success. He writes 30 pages of summary notes for every exam that are SUPER helpful.
8am is a brutal hour & you need to be caffeinated to keep up. He dislikes the low attendance but records lectures. Exams seem pretty fair except for exam 2 which covers the kidney. 98 on exam 1, 95 on exam 3, but I got a C on exam 2 AFTER the curve. The people who did well on that test have nothing else to do. For reference, I was a 4.0 student.
Took his mammalian physiology class. He is super organized, records lectures, and provides problem sets to prepare for tests. His tests are hard! You will have to put in lots of hours for this class. The entire grade is based on 3 tests and nothing else besides a curve. He makes himself available and response promptly to emails. He seems to care.
He is a good man
Hes very organized. Lectures are recorded and summary notes are very helpful. Problem sets saved me. Be sure to rewatch lectures and start studying early. You cant cram.
Dr. Hancock makes you work very hard for an A and he expected you to know every single detail. But his lecture is extremely useful! Understand the lecture really well and you should be fine. As for the lab, study Every single detail thoroughly and make sure you can recall the information fast, since you have a short amount of time for the practical
One of the best proffesors. Yes anatomy and physiology isn't an easy course yet this proffesor makes everything simple and try's his best to explain stuff in different ways. His office hours are really useful if you have any questions or need extra clarifications. I totally recommend Professor Hancock.
I would like about the lab of BIO301. It is zero credit, but he said that we should consider it as two credits. It takes more time to study than the lecture, which is four credits. Why he put too much pressure on lab when it is zero credit? He is disappointing us. Try to take this course to another school than PSU.
I felt Dr. Hancock was clear, did a phenomenal job explaining things and was very engaging; enjoyable to listen to. If you re-watch the lecture videos and read over the notes, the exams are fine. It's the LAB that is going to destroy your soul: It is entirely self-taught and a lot of detail to master. I wish we had more time to study the cadaver.
Dr. Hanckock is one of the best teachers that I ever had. He definitely enjoys teaching. He cares about students. he is accessible outside the classroom via email. his tests are easy(mostly big-picture questions) . do not need to read the book. just go over slides and 30 pages summary notes that he provides. attendance isn't mandatory. no clicker
He seems to try to teach everything harder than what it is. I do not know why he doesn't use 3d pictures to demonstrate the concept and draw crazy and unclear pictures to teach. Also, the students have to spend plenty of time to write his lecture to their notebook. He doesn't offer neat and organized slides to study. He teaches too fast etc.
He is a nice man, but his lecture is too heavy, and he writes and draws lines everywhere on the paper, which is super confusing. He is not aware that we have other courses besides AnP. If you want to succeed, do not take any other course beside AnP. No party, No weekend, No entertainments. Only study as much as possible. I got a hemorrhoid!
One of the best Biology Professors at PSU. Accessible outside class so go to office hours if you have any questions it is really helpful. Exams are not that hard if you understand the concepts and study from his summary notes. Overall I totally recommend Professor Hancock!
He is one of the best. To be a success, you should study hard and remember that this course is severe if you can take an easy course beside it. If you spend enough time, you will get a good result definitely.
He likes to put students in excessive pressure by the massive and compress syllabus and schedule. He cares about the number of slides to teach more than anything. We need the lectures to learn not to pass the exams.
A+P is by far one of the hardest classes I have taken at PSU, and I have taken other 400 level bio classes before. Dr. Hancock is an amazing professor and gives you every tool to succeed; it's up to you to use it. ITS A LOT OF MATERIAL, but if you do the problem sets, reads the summary notes DAILY, and do the practice exams, you will be fine.
I do not know how there are any positive reviews. The vibe I get from him is that he does not care about teaching at all. He is terrible at it because he makes things more complicated than they actually are. He takes everything SO SERIOUSLY when it does not have to be. I wish he would just chill out and give us a break every now and then.
If you only care about an easy A, don't take his class. Hancock loves teaching and wants you to be successful, so he gives tons of great material and expects you to know it. He offers every resource for you to do well. He's really a chill dude and he even keeps tabs on students' success after college. If you want to actually learn, take his class.
His exams are a tough but his expectations for lecture and lab are straight forward. Grading based only on tests. Lectures sometimes overwhelming, but his summary notes are amazing. Puts in a LOT of work to make his teaching and materials great, and he adjusted to the COVID pandemic very well. He is a passionate professor and his hard work shows!
Dr. Hancock presents a LOT of material in a very short time, but he is very well educated about the material and he is realistic about his expectations. His tests are hard and very specific, but there are no trick questions. You definitely have to watch the lectures to get all the required info. As long as you put in the time, you'll be okay.
Dr. Hancock is a wonderful instructor. I took his A&P series over the 2019-2020 school year and it was one of the most challenging courses I have ever taken. He cares about, and respects, the importance of the material and that is translated very well. Be prepared to spend most of your time studying lab material in conjunction with lecture too.
Had to buy textbook bc it had the lab assignments and diagrams for lab quizzes are pulled off there. Hardest class I've taken-material not hard but rather high volume little time. Took whole series in accelerated summer. You'll need to put in A LOT of work. Do problem sets, read summary notes. Lectures are really great, but the volume is overwhelmi
Ive hated my experience in this class. Be prepared to stay late because he never finishes class on time. He hardly answers questions because hes too worried about getting behind. His timed tests give you less than a minute per question and make it hard to even do well. His notes are also really sloppy and are no help for the exams.
his lectures are very fast which leaves little time to ask questions. you'll be teaching yourself most of the time. he seldom gives "grace". In lab half the class had loading issues to where there was only 2 minutes to take a quiz and hancock basically didn't care. summary notes have lots of spelling errors. in general he is very confusing.
Literally can not read his handwriting. Exams are given no time and any technical difficulties will cost you. Lecture is somewhat straightforward, lab is a totally a mess. Straight reading from slides and you have to remember.
prof provides A LOT of resources that help you do well in his class. Lectures go very fast (but are recorded), he makes additional supplementary vids, practice probs/exams, very helpful! summary notes contain everything you need to know. The downfall is the timing on Lab quizzes. Time management and not falling behind is the key to pass.
I had a wonderful time in the A&P course with lab. By far the hardest biology course that I took at PSU, so if you aren't up for a challenge then don't take this course. It will be hard, it will be time consuming, but you will learn a lot. Great course to take if you're pre-med, good overview of the different organ systems!
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE! Hancock loves to put pressure on his students. Exams are extremely difficult. The 2 midterms were 50 questions with 45 minutes. The final exam was 67 questions with 61 minutes. This course has cogbooks. Lectures are extremely fast paced and his handwriting is illegible. I was 1% away from an A, but he doesn't curve.
A & P lab is the most difficult science lab that you will ever take at PSU. At the beginning of each lab there's 10 short answer questions with only 7 minutes. You will lose points for misspelling. There's 2 practicals, which are 65 questions each with only 46 minutes. It's ridiculous how difficult this course is and it's worth 0 credits.
I didn't have power for about a week before one of the midterms. He only curved (which is something he never does) that midterm by 2% when he knew more than half of the class didn't have power to be able to study that much. He didn't even change the midterm date. Lectures are way too fast. Do you not recommend this professor at all!!!
This course is very difficult. Concepts are easy to understand but the information is very dense. Hancock is amazing at teaching the material, and the resources he provides help a lot. Summary notes will b your best friend. Tests are difficult but fair. Since info is so dense it is VERY important to keep up w/ ur studying.
Very good professor and a very hard class. I learned well from him, I know that some other students didn't click as well. The key to his class is to engage with the lectures, take notes on the slides, and DO THE PROBLEM SETS. If you can confidently do the problem sets then you are probably going to get an A on exams.
In my opinion, Hancock gives you the resources to do well, it just depends on the way you use them. It is a difficult course, but definitely not impossible to get a good grade if you manage your time efficiently and study well. Def recommend using his summary notes, problem sets and HW assignments. Lecture recordings/YouTube videos are awesome too!
Within his course I've learned that he isn't the best question writer. I'm spending more time trying to figure out what he is actually asking rather figuring out an answer. Its frustrating due to the fact that exams are timed. If you take this course you need to learn how to manage your time.
Half of the class dropped or withdrew from this class. The class is one hour long but the test is 45 minutes for 50 questions. I would not double in this class, if memorizing is hard for you try to balance this class with an easier one. Lab goes with lecture which makes it worse. each week you get a quiz that's 10 minutes for a packet worth of info
The lectures are very confusing and I spent most of the time trying to figure out what he was trying to ask during the exams. There is so much information you have to learn each week that it is almost unrealistic. I recommend not taking this class with another class that is time consuming because you really need to put your all into this class.
He was the best lecturer that I ever had in science class. English is my second language and I had no problem understanding his lectures and exam questions. Very well organized course, both lectures, and lab. He tested only on what he taught. Whatever is in the notes- high yield (must know).
Hancock's lectures and labs are so material dense to the point of it being unrealistic. Though many resources and support are readily available. Late-night hours will be spent studying. Test times are unfair, 60 min for 65 qstns, not even a minute for each. You will learn a lot and pass, though only through an obscure amount of time studying.
He writes very confusing exam questions that are easy to misinterpret. Lectures by itself are not enough because sometimes he'll mention something, not elaborate, then ask about it on the exam despite never talking about it further, you need to read the summary notes. Notes taken from lecture are confusing as he writes very little in lectures
I took 301 and 303 with Hancock and took 302 with a different professor. The quality in material is astounding--it's clear that Dr.Hancock has a passion for the course and for teaching. Read the summary notes. Show up every day and engage with the lecture--if you're pre-clinical this is the guy you want preparing you. It gets better after 301L.
The class is really not as bad as people say. Sure, the material is hard and it forces you to put in a ridiculous amount of time, but he provides you with all the resources you need to succeed. Don't bother reading the textbook or doing the problem sets. Read his summary notes through and through and you'll do great on the exams.
I loved professor Hancock. Anatomy is a very difficult and content heavy class that requires memorization, but im not judging the course, just Hancock. Even though he has to get through a lot in lectures, he was still engaging and recorded lectures, so I only went to one a week. Gives notes for exams to use as a study guide. Hardly any homework.
I thoroughly enjoyed lectures and classroom set up by Dr. Hancock. Didn't feel as though any part of the class was "busywork." Challenging topic, but he made it very interesting and engaging. He cares about student mental health, prefacing exams with encouraging messages and emphasizing importance of reducing test anxiety. Excited to continue A&P!
Dr. Hancock was a good instructor! The class wasn't easy, just took time each day. His exams aren't easy, but I found doing his problem sets to be the best way to learn the material and prepare for the exam. You can answer most of the problem set questions by looking through his lecture PowerPoints. The lab took a lot of time memorizing! Nice curve
Hancock lectured by filling his notes on the spot with drawings and writing. I copied along and used my notes to answer his problem sets and got a great understanding of the subject. Took time each day but was worth it. His tests aren't easy, but I found the problem sets the best way to prepare for them. If you want to understand the topic take him
BI417 was less stressful and scary than I thought, Thomas made the lectures easy to digest and went at a great pace without getting boring. The practice problems prepared you for the exams. I'd take another class with him in the future, I'd also like to add that this was an online course so it could be different for others.
Dr. Hancock is a brilliant professor with a genuine passion for the subject he teaches. His lectures are clear in the content necessary for the exams, and he provides ample resources (summary notes, problem sets, and separate videos breaking down content) for you to prepare for the exams as well. Really kind and understanding as well.
Dr. Hancock truly knows so much about the human body. His mind is a reference book and we are lucky to be able to learn from him. If you work hard and put in the time he will help you and respect you. This is not an easy class but he gives many resources for success and he wants his students to do well. One of the best professors I've ever had.
Insanely difficult for no reason. Almost made me drop out.
