Philosophy and language. This is an interesting course. It would be more effective with a structured tutorial where students have to discuss questions based on readings done in advance, instead of a third hour of lecture. Thomas is a good prof but sometimes hard to follow/lectures in circles.
Thomas is a very interesting teacher, but do not expect to get your moneys worth out of the class. He cancels nearly one third of them because he does not feel like teaching, and with all the spare time he has, he only returns assignments at the end of the semester
I found him to be a very easy marker. I attended all his classes and each time I was surprised how I barely understood anything he talked about. However, I still ended up with an A because I read the book right before the assignments. For sure the easiest marker I've ever had
I enjoyed Thomas' Plato and the roots of western philosphy class. A very intelligent and helpful professor. Gives examples to help clearify. Read the book and you will do great. Got a B+.
Great Prof, very interesting.
Fantastic teaher, and fantastic course. No textbook, which is nice, but readings. I suppose they could be long, but he made the material interesting so they flew by. Perhaps a bit confusing, but it's philosophy, it can't always be clear. Really wanted to help, and really helped if you talked one-on-one. I would recommend him a hundred times over.
Great professor, very interesting. Lectures are a bit hard to follow but overall, he is good at keeping you engaged. Very brilliant, and definitely easy on the eyes.
Great professor! Lectures are interesting and uses a good amount of videos. If you listen and do the readings, you'll most definitely get an easy A.
One of my favourite teachers. I found him very easy to follow. I think he was an easy marker because it was a rudimentary class. Concur with another commenter, definitely easy on the eyes. Very engaging teacher. Loved this course.
Very unique approach to teaching, doesn't like alot of rules - very easy on late penalties. VERY EASY ON THE EYES in a salt and pepper older man kind of way. Super chill in general though, not a hard marker. Not too exciting of a class though...
great prof, awesome communication and hes funny
Metaphysics was a hard and tedious subject, but Thomas made it enjoyable. He's very nice, has a razor-sharp wit and works hard to stretch your mind. He marks pretty easily, perhaps to compensate for the challenging nature of the material. Great guy if you can get him.
LOVE Thomas. The first thing I do now when I have to pick courses is search to see what he's teaching each semester. Ideas That Shape the World I was the best course I have ever taken. Part II was not so great because I am not into the ancients, but it still turned out well. He's really attractive too – partially because he's SO intelligent.
He makes all of his lectures very clear. The way he teaches is a bit strange but he makes the content easy to remember! Such a wonderful professor
He made our bioethics class fun and interesting. He is also very good at explaining philosophical concepts and always sharing personal life stories. You can get an A if you attend lectures and try to do all the assignments/biweekly journals he gives
The man is a genius. I highly recommend this class if you want to learn what is going on in today's world and how things really work. Really interesting course. A very fair marker.
All required reading are online. Fair marker - just do the work; profound lectures using current world examples as well as historical ones; ends classes early as possible.
He cancels class a lot and takes forever to give back assignments. Nice guy but his lectures are hard to understand because he doesn't use really powerpoints. I often find myself getting bored and wanting to leave early.
Surprised that this prof got such great reviews. First, avoid taking this class - it is a complete waste of a credit as the material is not relevant to anything in the real world. Prof took 2 months to begin marking anything so you never knew what you were doing wrong. Never responded to any comments on blackboard. Overall very disappointing.
Veryy good proff. easy marker. Hi is amazing
This prof was great! He knows what he's talking about and he's a fair grader. You don't need to do the readings if you attend class. I would love to have him again, I learned a lot from him.
He is very knowledgeable! His lectures are great because of that. He is also very open to helping students. The weekly journals he assigns are easy marks. One bad thing is that he takes forever to hand back assignments and doesn't leave any comments. Overall, it was nice being in his class.
great proff
Take this course if you are interested in philosophy! His lectures are so interesting...i barely understood what he said and still managed to do well in the course!!! :) He's really fantastic, kind, and willing to help you if you walk up to him and ask! Overall, REALLY chill prof just do your readings!!! Oh, and did i mention there's no textbooks?!
He is the definition of a silver fox. :P His classes were very interesting, and there's no textbook. Make sure you do your readings. He's also very helpful and easy to approach, with a good sense of humour
One of my best professors so far. While it's hard to follow everything in his class, you can always e-mail him or come for extra help. He really knows his stuff and is willing to help. He was also willing to extend the due date for the final essay if you had a bunch of exams just before it was due.
Took way too long to mark anything. Said he will provide actual feedback for journal entries when he actually didn't.
You were literally on your own; with students trying to teach each other the course. This was a condensed course (6 or 7 weeks), therefore it was stressful enough on it's own without the added pressure of an MIA prof! Seemed nice when he did get back to you BUT don't take this course online of you need constant feedback from the prof.
Probably best professor ever. His public speaking skills are top notch, so his lectures are interesting to listen to. Do note that he speaks fast, so do not expect to take any notes. Just take notes from his slideshows. Everything he lectures about is on the quizzes.
I could listen to Hart lecture for hours. He is so intelligent and nice. His assignments give you a great chance to express yourself and your ideas. I would recommend taking this class to anyone.
The most unhelpful prof, goes on and on about irrelevant topics like the mayor and where he grew up. Tutorial's are really helpful though Tip: study what he says won't be on the testexam & the textbook will be your friend
You literally don't have to attend class. Just read his lecture slide,go the tutorials and practice textbook questions. Why? Because during his lecture he LOVES to go off topic and it's useless to be there.
Professor Hart is brilliant, but make sure to be really interested in the course if you're gonna take it. Funny, approachable, likes to make sure everyone's following.
His lectures were very boring and hard to comprehend. His marking was often inconsistent, and does not give feedback.
SSH 105 Overall is a course that requires practice in terms of understanding new concepts and terms. There are only 3 quizzes and a final exam. Overall I liked Thomas Hart since he kept classes short, and posts his slides online. Be careful though, this course requires a lot of understanding since it's fairly new.
Don't take any online classes from him! He barely answers any questions, he changes test and assignment times at the last minute, and people were emailing him over and over again trying to get answers, at one point he hadn't logged into blackboard for like two weeks! I got a pretty good mark, just expect to teach yourself.
Great speaker, super clear. The course material could get very confusing but he made it easy to understand.
While it is true that he may not be around for you much after class, the lectures themselves were incredible, I hated missing his class. He was very clear and knows his stuff very well. If you don't get the class material after this guy explains it, you might never get it at all.
The course requires a lot of practicing from the textbook, in order to understand the concepts. The grade you receive, however, depends on your teaching assistant. He goes through the slides very quickly and rarely takes the time to explain each one, but he uploads it onto Blackboard. I think he'd be a better Professor in a smaller class setting.
Well, I'm actually a potato head and didn't get what Plato and his friends were saying so I dropped the course. Hart is a very intelligent person and looks pretty good. Very nice person too.
You don't have to go to class. He posts everything online and it is clear. Read the textbook and do the practice questions and you'll do amazing. He is probably the smartest teacher I have ever had in my entire life. He answers questions properly and is very good at teaching and speaking. Very nice and easy marker too. If you try, you succeed.
He is hilarious, so lectures are nowhere near boring. It helps to read at least some of the material to understand his lectures better, but he also does a great job explaining the text and gives detailed powerpoint lectures. The tests are literally stuff discussed in class so all you have to do is study the material and you'll be good.
Very easy going, and easy marks with weekly assignments. Do the homework questions and you will pass with flying colors.
I would advise caution when taking this class, it's not easy if you don't care. t. He makes everything very relative to every day life, and is approachable if you go to him. Doesn't email. Sort of scatter brained but in an endearing way. Highly reccomended if you're looking for a debate.
He was not very helpful in any with this course. I emailed him a few times and got no reply. This is an online course and email is the only way to communicate with him. Course was disorganized and all over the place. Some weeks we had assignments, some weeks we did't and it was hard to keep up. He did not post grades or feedback in a timely manner.
Super funny and interesting! He's a really cool prof and really engaging. He knows a lot of students by name and was a pleasure to have. Fair grader and doesn't make a fuss if you skip a class or two. Sometimes he goes off subject but he returns quickly, and he's not too bad on the eyes.
While he was a pretty easy marker, I took nothing away from this class. His lectures were very unorganized, and he would often leave the whole class confused, trying to determine what the point was. I still don't know what the learning outcome for this course was supposed to be.
Sped through lectures (impossible to learn everything in the class) and cut them short in half. Honestly, I learned from my TA, who spent their time explaining concepts more clearly and elaborately than they were said in class. It is a easy course for some, and for some it is the worst. I enjoyed it, because the concepts were easy to understand.
Class made up of weekly discussion posts (200 words), two papers and one final, none of which was particularly difficult. Weekly readings kind of long sometimes but not always necessary. He marks fairly and holds weekly tutorials to clarify any issues. Downsides are that he didn't really reply to emails and only gave back one grade all semester.
He was a really good professor by far my favourite so far, his lectures were easy to follow and straight forward. His tests were very easy and he's not a hard marker at all. He's also really funny so even if you're not interested in what he's teaching the lectures are still exciting and go by fast.
He is really interesting and tends to go off topic in a very alluring and interesting way.
I've taken 3 classes with him (ACS200, PHL101 and SOC107) and I plan on taking many more. He is an outstanding professor, definitely one of my favourites. He teaches the material in a way where you actually grasp concepts. He may talk too fast for SOME people (as I've been told) but I genuinely enjoy every one of his lectures.
Prof. Hart is really a great guy, and his classes very interesting. He really wants you to understand, and welcomes an open forum in the classroom. He's an incredibly easy marker, but provided zero outline for the paper, which was a little stressful. The exams were very fair.
He is a bit disorganized but has a great character. Very easy going professor and straightforward tests. He is a very knowledgable person and he sounds a bit like an encyclopedia when he talks knowing dates, historical facts, etc. The only problem with that is that you are never sure exactly what you need to know for the tests and what you don't.
I love this man. He is fantastic. I love listening to him speak. He is so knowledgable on so many different fronts. He doesn't believe in standardized testing to simply gauge your "intelligence". Great class, Great guy. He doesn't even make you get a textbook!!! All the readings are solely online, such a gem.
Prof Hart is a super caring and thorough prof. Even though he sometimes gets off topic, he makes the content interesting and connects it to things that are easier to understand. 10/10 would take his class again.
I love this man. He has the biggest heart, and truly cares. He is a huge inspiration, and makes you want to be a better person. 10/10 would recommend !
Professor Hart was a great professor to have. He was very knowledgeable about the topics and delivered them in a manner that helped students to learn. If you read the articles assigned and ask for help, you will get a great mark in this class. Thomas was awesome and I'd recommend taking a class taught by Professor Hart.
- A classic university experience in terms of lectures; he'll speak, and you'll be driven to listen. - Very charismatic. - No slides; delivery is enough to keep you engaged - Take notes; it all adds up - Weekly journals: 500 wrds, freewritten, on text of that week, easy grades. No prob. - The learning takes place during the lectures. Be there.
Really interesting lectures, I think this man is amazing and brilliant. However he is very hard to get a hold of outside of class, posts exam review guides and essay outlines too close to deadlines and the reading material is incredibly heavy. Go to class to pass and BE SURE TO read the readings beforehand.
Prof. Hart is knowledgeable, but I got the impression he was overworked, stressed out, and not passionate. Accessibility outside of class was slim, he did not answer his emails promptly, if at all, and he provided vague instruction on assignments. Easy class, interesting readings, but the lectures can put you right to sleep!
Dr. Hart is a great guy. He was fun and not too serious. He treated us as his equals which I really admired. All of the tests are based off of the readings and what he says in class so make lots of notes and listen to everything even if it doesn't seem relevant. My only problem was that he was a bit unorganized.
My favourite professor I've had. Very practical in his teaching style, super lenient and helpful when it comes to essays and due dates, no midterms, no final exams, grading style is based on your ability to think about the course material, rather than memorizing it.
He's amazing! His breadth of knowledge on the subject can be overwhelming and you may forget to take notes. There are no slides, it's quite organic, so attending class is the best way to understand the material. I agree with others, he's hard to reach outside of class time, so if you need to ask something, stay afterwards.
Professor Hart gives extremely interesting lectures. He really breaks down hard and thick content to make it more accessible for people who do not have a background in philosophy. He is very personable and has a great attitude towards teaching. You can tell very easily that he wants to be there.
Very interesting material that is eyeopening. Hart simplifies and elaborates on the texts so that they are more digestible. Four short journals and one final paper that are fairly marked. Would definitely recommend to take this class!
Thing is, I enjoyed his class so much, it was interesting and engaging and at times inspirational. But Hart was so friggin disorganized. You never really know when anything is due or what is going to be on each test out of TONS of readings. On some tests you'll get an A and others you'll get a C without any feedback! Great lecturer though
My favorite professor! Engaging and really knows his stuff! Some of the best classes I have taken at Ryerson hands down. Knows his stuff and tries to engage the class whenever he can. Not the hardest marker either, received some of my best grades in his philosophy classes.
Prof always kept on changing the course outline throughout the semester. Course had many inconsistencies. Try another liberal this liberal isn't easy.
Course material was fine but administration was bad enough that I'd never take a course with this teacher again, no matter what the topic was. Avoid this guy if you want stable due dates, want your e-mails answered in under two weeks, don't like it when classes degenerate into dissatisfied muttering, and generally aren't professional or respectful.
Prof. Thomas is a great lecturer. I took elective with him. It was a lot of reading because it is a history class. His marking is very fair. He takes into consideration that everyone comes from a different major. I took two history courses that semester one was horrible (because of the prof.) and one was great coz of Thomas. His test aren't hard
I took ACS 200 with Prof Hart as well. While it was difficult as there was A LOT of reading, he made it so interesting! His marking scheme is terrible, however, as he uses letter grades so even though I got all A's and only one B+, my overall grade was A- bringing down my GPA. Sadly, he is SO disorganized and so the class morale suffers a bit.
Hands down one of the best professors I've ever had at Ryerson. His lectures aren't mandatory but I found them so interesting that I never missed a class. Structure of the class was a few journals and a final essay. He tells you what he's looking for and marks fairly. Puts a lot of emphasis on clarity of argument.
He knows his stuff and is passionate about what he does. However he rushes through lectures, hands back grades late, always pushes due dates of assignments, and is not very specific in terms of what he expects with assignments. He also talks way to fast so be prepared to rely on the textbook.
I've only take philosophy courses by Prof Hart and I have to say, if you enjoy thinking for yourself then he's the teacher for you. He prefers journal and essay assignments and doesn't usually set exams. But he expects you to actually apply yourself and present thoughtful arguments. He's a bit slow when it comes to grading, but otherwise great.
He has assignments every week about the current chapter, those are helpful in preparing for exams. Studying the important information from chapters would net you a high grade. This course can get confusing, the best thing to do is go over practice questions in the textbook, they are similar to assignment questions. His modules are not very helpful.
I regret taking this course online, because apparently he is a great lecturer. I found this course unnecessarily difficult, and wouldn't recommend as a liberal. His modules were unhelpful, the textbook is your best friend (beware: textbook is kind of hard to understand). The first test was fine, the second was harder, and the final was okay.
Prof Hart is amazing. Best PHL professor Ive ever had. He is slow with grading, but it doesn't matter because its not hard to do well if you go to class and read. Likes having a conversation and gives great feedback. For journals and essays Hart doesn't care about a 'correct' argument but wants to hear an interesting discussion. Highly recommended.
Thomas is a great lecturer, I just wouldn't recommend the class itself based on content. As boring as it is, Thomas tries his best to make it easy to understand and almost enjoyable. Weekly assignments, two midterms, an exam and final essay make it a harder elective than most would chose. The readings are basically required to pass and helpful.
Professor Hart is a brilliant lecturer, always really engaging and he really knows his stuff. It shows that he cares a lot about his subject, and it really helps make it more interesting. My one issue is that he gave basically no feedback on assignments, and every time I turned something in I had no idea what my mark would be. Worth it though.
He is a knowledgeable professor. He is funny and explains well in the summary. However, you must type quickly of everything he says. There are no slides. There is no attendance, but it is best to attend in order to be able to answer easy short questions on d2l. No exams, however, there is a final essay. Great marker, not organized in deadlines.
Amazing lecturer. His online modules kinda suck but if you read the textbook and participate in his online tutorials, he'll clarify it with you and everything will be so much easier. Do your weekly homework for every chapter. Lots of reading, but if you work for it, you'll get that A- at very least. PHL214 is like algebra but with words lol.
I took this course online so I can't say much about the professor but what I can say is DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE ONLINE! Its a TON of work and reading for a lower liberal plus the content is really confusing, don't let the name of the course fool you.
Really expands on the topics he teaches beyond what's in the readings, making references to local political and economic issues. Easy grader. Might be a little disorganized sometimes.
Honestly I have no idea what to say about this prof since I never met him, looked at his modules or even attended the online tutorials; however, I can say that this course super easy if you literally skim the textbook and do the assignments (which also give you marks by the way). I'm not particularly smart and still managed a B by doing nothing.
Thomas Hart is one of my favourite profs. His knowledge and passion for philosophy is engaging regardless of your personal interest. He wants all of his students to do well and will provide them with whatever accommodations they need in order to succeed. You can tell he enjoys what he does, and truly cares about his students.
Lazy marker, gives everyone flat B+ or A-. Doesn't reply to emails, communicates poorly with students. Seems like a cool guy, but bad at his job.
This professor offers a unique approach to Philosophy. He gives the historical and social context of whatever ideas are under discussion, and shows that to fully understand philosophy , the ideas must be viewed from within that context. Other professors are not offering this valuable interpretation.
There are a few journals which are pretty easy marks and readings are may be a bit complicated if you're new to philosophy. Otherwise, he's a really nice guy, likes to give a few jokes sometimes, and his lectures are pretty enjoyable. He's really nice at marking too, and the class only has a midterm, a few journals, and a final paper. 10/10
Thomas is a nice guy, but he is a horrible prof. Ive never seen someone so disorganized. He never replies to emails, he reads off the slides , and he forgets to post the Dropbox for the homework you have to do weekly. I wouldnt take his class again. This was an elective I chose and regret
Extremely intelligent, interesting man. However, extremely disorganized prof. Like others here have mentioned, he is a scatterbrain and is always all over the place. Frustrating if you're someone like myself who needs set instructions/guidelines and marks back/feedback in order to succeed.
Very kind, intelligent professor. However, his course is somewhat frustrating because like others here have said, you never really know what to expect going into exams. You can tell he wants you to enjoy the content and actually learn something, but at the end of the day we're here for the credit too. Other than that, hes a great guy.
He is a very nice teacher, but boy is he bad at his job. He had to push back assignments and tests. We crammed three chapters in 1 day, and had a test the next week. He isn't that great at responding to emails, he gives you hw every week to be submitted online, I haven't learned anything in his class to be honest. Very poor experience.
It's clear that Prof. Hart's lectures are given with a great deal of knowledge, and that he loves what he does. Sometimes he could veer off into a tangent, however these tangents are incredibly insightful should you wish to expand your knowledge beyond the expectation. It's clear that he wants all of his students to be successful. A must-take!
Modules/lectures were in paragraph form. This wouldn't be bad if it wasn't for the fact everything was written like an essay. WAY TOO MANY big words used. If you're teaching a new subject to someone, don't confuse them even more. There was also so many grammar issues, run on sentences, and lost train of thoughts, which made learning harder
Hart is the most unorganized prof I've ever had. He isn't familiar with D2L, so each time he attempts to upload a grade you receive a highlighted 'F', and it takes him another week to learn how to rectify it. All you receive is a letter, so no feedback. Take home final, but very vague instructions. Takes him FOREVER to grade. Doesn't reply to email
Great lecturer, super helpful, and honestly brilliant. unfortunately, he grades quite slowly, is bad at replying to emails, and doesn't update d2l properly, otherwise i'd give him 5 stars.
Thomas Hart is a really nice guy, there's a lot of readings and a few tests. You'll do fine if you do the readings. His marks don't really seem to have a solid marking scheme but if you show that you've done the readings its an easy A
This Professor is the worst teacher I've ever had. He doesn't respond to emails. Doesn't give you marks back for assignments. And when he finally responded to my email after I sent a second one expressing my anger, he was very rude. I don't reccomend this teacher as he is unorganized and not helpful whatsoever. 0/10
I took this course online and the prof doesn't post anything. He also doesn't get back to emails. Contacting him is hard. Emailed him a week ago and still haven't heard anything from him and my exam is in a week.
He's a really nice and fair guy, really interesting lectures. Not too much work just readings no papers just short journals every other week and 2 tests. He does tutorials online so it saves you a trip if you commute
This course was extremely difficult for me, not sure if it is just me but the content is so confusing. The issue with this type of course is that it's really subjective so I recommend taking it in person if you can. The professor wasn't a huge help and I struggled to understand a lot of concepts even with the modules
Thomas is an amazing prof with a brilliant mind. His knowledge and passion make the class fun and intriguing. I believe his classes are not for everybody, you must have a similar passion for philosophy to truly enjoy his class. The material he chose was insightful and life-changing. He opened my eyes to the possibilities and perspectives in life!
Lots of reading was required and the lectures felt very dry and long. I personally found the essay grading criteria to be vague so the first assignment was difficult. Grading is two major essays so ask as many questions as you can. He's difficult to reach outside of class but is really passionate about the subject.
Very hard course for me to handle even though I ended w a satisfactory mark. He graded as if he couldn't respect writing that wasn't his own, he made it hard for students to get their words in during class even though he would take questions he would pass on some if he didn't feel like getting into it and he talked for 3 hours straight.
His lecture was extremely interesting. He used examples of his own personal life to make students understand the concepts of existentialism better. Also an easy marker, you dont have to try too hard and all the answers are in the book. You dont have to memorize anything since all the journals and the exam could be done from home.
Truly knowledgeable and passionate about philosophy, I really enjoy the lectures he's given, it feels like a unique life lesson rather than a university course.
worst prof ive ever had, does NOT reply to emails and his instructions barely make sense
Prof Hart clearly is an intelligent man with knowledge to share but I was really disappointed in the lack of discussion was able to facilitate. 3 hours lectures with only a small handful of close-ended questions posed to the class that are usually variations on the form "does anyone know what ______ is?" Can't we get a little dialectic as a treat??
2nd time taking a class with Hart and he is awesome. So interesting to listen to. My only criticism of Hart is he is unorganized. He often forgets to post assignments or promises to post grades and forgets ect. It can be frustrating at times but he usually makes up for it with extensions and such.
You can tell he's really passionate about what he's teaching. I've taken several classes with him, and he is by far my favourite professor. One of the most caring, empathetic professors I've ever met. He understands that life gets in the way sometimes, and he wants his students to do well. Stay away if you don't actually like philosophy.
This prof is clearly a really smart guy who knows his stuff. The actual issue is that his communication skills are practically nonexistent. He pretty much refuses to ever communicate with you and respond to emails and he often reuses old content over and over again and the instruction are so sloppy it leads to a lo of confusion and contradictions
Very interesting and passionate professor, enjoyed the course a lot and his lectures are great, except sometimes he goes a bit too fast and it's possible that you may miss some things. What I liked most about him was his passion for philosophy and all the stories and examples he would tell us so that we could understand better. Take this professor.
Great prof, he knows what he's talking about. Takes a while to reply to emails though.
Decent prof just highlights important points during lectures. but you can get by just by doing the readings.
Great prof. He's really kind and understanding, especially throughout covid. The tests and marks were fair. No complaints.
Took PHL187 in Fall 2020 online. I had a great time learning the material from this course. Dr. Hart's lectures were great. Some online discussion questions after the lecture for participation marks. Readings can get a little heavy, but they take no longer than 1-2 hours to finish. The slides also sum it up for you. Great prof. Great course.
Hart is very knowledgeable, and always delivers incredible lectures. Although you can get through the class just by doing the readings, zoom call lectures were mandatory to attend if you want a good participation mark. Assessment is based off of 2 tests and an exam (as well as participation). All the assessments are essays!
the class was not too difficult and I found it to be a step up from grade 12 philosophy. not many grading materials (3 essays in total) and participation marks ( go to class and complete the discussion questions you'll get an A). although it was a lecture heavy class I found the lectures to be interesting as he knows how to explain very well.
His class is the reason you take philosophy, he loves teaching existentialism and as long as you do the readings and whats expected you'll do great. The readings are super difficult though and a bunch of students dropped out, but once you get past the first month and a half you get better and getting a good mark is very reachable. FYI -no textbook.
This prof is really nice and engages with his class. hes very knowledgable and does his best to keep things interesting. there are readings every week and 2 big tests and a final exam but If you sound like you know whats going on, you will be fine. I literally had no idea about what was being taught but I still got by
He knows his stuff but is not great at explaining or actually teaching, the readings are extremely long and hard to understand so you need to attend his lectures to try and get explanations. However he marks really easy and if you just follow what he has said in lectures and add some of your own thoughts and research you'll pass with a decent mark
Prof Hart is super engaging, friendly and very laid back. At first I was overwhelmed by the difficult concepts, but over time I managed to make some sense of it. There is some leeway when it comes to the marking scheme; but make sure you effectively relate to the course concepts. Not the best with responding quickly, but when he does it is thorough
He knows what he's talking about, but his delivery of the information is confusing and not structured well. I had to work really hard and teach myself a lot of things outside of class to even have a small idea of what was going on. He isn't a super tough marker, but you need to work hard to understand the concepts in order to get a good mark.
He is a nice teacher however his grading is a bit confusing. During online school he deleted the recorded sessions each week to make sure you are caught up and dont binge watch them all at the end of the course or before a test - which is inconvenient for procrastinators. Overall, the course was easy because there are only a few things graded.
I love Professor Hart!! I want to take another class of his after taking PHL366 in Fall 2020. I don't major in philosophy but i got an A- on every essay! He is very sweet and a great person to chat with and ask questions to. He knows his stuff and always has something to say. I would love to take another class of his if it fit in my schedule.
I took PHL366 in Fall 2020, and it was an amazing experience! I absolutely adore Dr. Hart. He very clearly cares about the content he is teaching, which made every lecture immensely engaging. His lectures were a bright spot in my week for sure! He is also a very fair marker, and his assignments were easy to understand. Take his course!
Clearly passionate about the material - he is a compelling orator, and very articulate. However, he is very disorganized and unprofessional in my opinion. A professor passionate about the material is nice, but it is more important that they care about doing their job well - in my estimation, he doesn't care much for all that being a prof entails.
Hart is an amazing Prof! You can tell that he enjoys and cares about the subjects he is lecturing on. I have taken courses with him before and he never fails to be engaged in the topic. He doesn't read off slides or cards like my other profs do.
Hart was a very generous and flexible professor, especially during this online schooling time. It was quite difficult to access him outside of class, he did not respond to emails often. However, the course itself felt fun and nice to interact and engage with other classmates in the discussion. weekly participation discussion boards were easy marks
Good professor. He teaches good and expands on his points rather than just reading off a slide. This class does have a lot of reading though, so be prepared. He also does take a while to answer email though, and takes a very long time to finish marking. The course is easy though, especially with this professor.
He's a super nice guy, really fun and funny and likes to interact with students a lot. He is super unorganized tho if you take this course with him make sure to keep track of everything that's happening through the syllabus and read your mail. Otherwise midterm and exam were super easy.
Ryerson has acquired a real gem with Hart. He is such a knowledgeable man and he really cares about philosophy. His lectures are not boring at ALL even though PHL187 is very history-based. Hart will give you extensions, give you feedback, and everything you need! He really cares about his students.
Regardless of what I did - I did not understand the materials. I flunked the first quiz - my fault for not studying, but I flunked the second quiz after studying! Also this course was not what I expected. I expected critically reviewing topics, not doing math tables and learning that if it quacks and walks like a duck - it may or may not be a duck.
I agree with the person below me... this class just wasn't it. Normally an A student, and the tests were just so left field. No real way to study and prepare for tests because it was all random examples of guessing and him trying to trick you. The marks weren't posted until 2-3 days before the next test, so no real time to ask for help.
Don't believe what he says. U r on ur own. Never on time in feedback. Quizzes are not standard, designed to trick u. Tons of spelling mistakes of the quiz. Recycles the questions in final. It is not clear what u are supposed to learn. The book is Logical Reasoning, non standard textbook but has some interesting stuff. Got essay 80% still ended C- !
I took CPHL214 with Dr. Hart in the Spring/Summer 2021 semester. I finished the class with an 3.67 (A-). I thought the course content was interesting, however there were times where I felt there could have been a clearer grading criteria. Also, the quizzes are quite tricky.
Thomas doesn't care for his students as he forgets to even upload the required assignments on time, every week some one had to remind him that if the assignment was due or not. He is technology illiterate, he says quiz must be done in 90 minutes but doesn't know how to put a timer for the quiz. So it doesn't show how much time you have left.
Overall a good prof. He was super chill and understanding. Don't miss the discussion posts, take notes & you'll be fine. The only thing that disappointed me, is that we didn't really learn about Art in the class. It was supposed to be about art + existentialism, and it was just about existentialism, it wasn't bad at all but not what I had in mind.
I took Prof Hart's class in Existentialism, and it was brilliant (as long as you did the work).Granted,I am not a Philosophy major but the topic interested me,and this class ended up making me question the direction of my life as it sits,in GOOD way. It is not for the faint of heart, but if you find yourself questioning things, its a solid class.
Dr Hart is a great professor, his course was structured in a way that I could enjoy my summer and take a course at the same time. I usually enjoyed my mornings and studied a couple hours a night for this course 3 days a week and still managed to get an A-. If you're willing to put a few hours into his course, you'll definitely get an A-
Worst prof I have ever had. Never replies to emails and because the course is completely asynchronous emails are the only way of reaching him. Very slow marker. Doesn't release answer sheets a day before a quiz/test. Marks harshly and doesn't provide feedback when asked for it. Definitely, one to avoid.
Prof. Hart has easily become my favourite professor of all time. He cares about his students and he cares about the art of education. Prof. Hart has inspired me to learn in ways I didn't know I wanted to before, I had never cared much for philosophy before, and that completely changed with every passing conversation between prof. hart. He cares.
Prof. Hart is by far one of the most laid back professors that I have had. Discussion board entries are for completion, Midterm and Essay were straightforward. Lectures are more discussion-based (little to no slides), so be prepared to participate and take good notes. Other than that, this class was a breeze. Workload was light and engaging.
Doesn't care about students and their learning process. Doesn't interact with students aside from a few emails. Just a terrible class that I will never have anything to do with this prof after.
Best lectures I've ever been in, and super super knowledgeable guy. Makes a fairly dense subject interesting and fun to learn, situates ideas within their contexts super well. Can't praise Hart enough. A must take for anyone seriously interested in epistemology.
Just phenomenal. Took PHL550, not 551, but that isn't listed. Must have.
Dr. Hart was just awesome. Easy going and gave us an easy time with everything. If you're taking phl 101, expect a lot of weekly reading, discussion posts every week count for participation grade, and for midterm and final long essays. You shouldn't have hard time if you're reading the materials and attending the lectures.
He is hilarious and jokes around. It's clear he cares a lot about the topic and goes on and on. He's less focused on memorization and more focused on you /developing your own opinion and justifying it/. There're weekly posts but he's been /stellar/ at accommodating my health conditions and life circumstances. I didn't do the readings but do them!
Such an amazing prof, I truly wish I could take one of his classes again. If you have the chance to take a class with him, do not hesitate to take it. Not a tough marker and cares about his students. Overall a great class and I learned so much from him. Best lectures ever as well, the one class that I wasn't texting away on my phone. 10/10.
My favourite professor I have had. Cares and genuinely wants success for his students. The most engaging lecturer I have had. He makes lots of jokes and is very approachable to all his students. So fantastic I am trying to find another of his classes to take again. Highly recommend. Also the most intelligent person I have ever met.
One of the bests! Made class and tutorials always interesting. I always paid attention in his lectures. Very engaging.
Convinced that this prof wrote his own good reviews. It doesn't seem like he takes the role of a university level professor seriously at all. He doesn't have formal lectures, they're more just chatter. Ghosts your emails. ZERO feedback on assignments. Rambles on and on about irrelevant things. Takes phone calls mid class. Not professional at all.
He's not tech savy, always forgets to post stuff on time which is a huge inconvenience. Generally just very unorganized. Also like the other reviewers mentioned below, don't expect to hear back from him because he will ghost you lol. He came across unprofessional imo. No feedback on work, no clear grading criteria. Just bizarre. Avoid if you can.
Easily my favourite professor in the PHL department. Friendly, personable, and very approachable. Doesn't make you feel stupid for asking questions. A little unreliable with emails and discussion boards, but not maliciously, and always makes up for it. Wish he provided more feedback, though.
The lectures were not only interesting but this prof created a comfortable woking environment which made be feel welcomed to ask questions without the fear of embarrassment. He was funny and passionate about the content which made me want to learn about it. Dialogues were tricky at first but I learned along the way. I would def take it again.
Everyone should take Thomas for any PHL class, he is very understanding and an amazing marker for all of the students. The more you participate the higher your mark will be.
I am taking CPHL366 during the fall semester. Prof. Hart creates poorly formatted modules with wording that is equally as poor. Don't bother emailing him; he won't respond. The content of this course is easy and straightforward, once you realize that half of the garbage he mentions in the modules can be omitted. Seek outside content/resources.
Shrishti Kumar: Genuinely nourished my brain; the only reason I had the curiosity to research my self. Inspired me saying, you know they medicate you now, but a few hundred years ago you would have been a medicinal healer Term shamanic healer, paraphrased. Also loved arts and culture existentialism Give Him Tenure, he runs your Chang School.
He is SO nice and actually cares about his students and what he teaches. The discussion posts are mandatory but are super engaging and interesting. Literally only had a midterm and a final essay, no assignments, no homework, and no final exam. The course is super interesting and enlightening.
He's very smart, however, he misses a lot of classes and is not very good with replying to students. This is my first PHL course and I like it but the outline is not my style the final essay is worth 40% and its the only essay for the course so you aren't given much insights into what he may want.
Great prof; he's very smart, and his marking is easy. However, this is coming from a 4th year student taking a first-year course. So take it with a grain of salt.
Great prof! Attendance is not necessary but I do recommend attending his lectures and tutorials. Makes the class interesting and marks very fairly.
Very unprofessional. Extremely unclear as to how things are graded/weighed. Midterm/final were both vague and had unclear expectations. Most of the lecture/readings contain unnecessary information and he goes off topic and rambles a lot. Hes a decent person but a bad prof. Also flakes on emails and cancels lectures quite often
Being honest, I had no interest in philosophy. However, Dr. Hart's passion for the subject and course immediately catches your interest and helps you stay engaged. I left this course with a lot of knowledge, and I would definitely take this prof again. Very understanding, cares about his students, and a great lecturer.
very enjoyable classes, great with the jokes! Makes student understand with real life scenerios. he is not too strict with markings and makes his exams pretty easy however everything he provides is very broad so alot of questions might pop up. Be sure to ask before or after class because his email respond game is BAD.
very laidback prof. Super funny during his lectures, you can tell he's very passionate about it. Discussion post are easy participation points if you look through his slides. Also super fine.
He's a great prof who is passionate about his work and you actually learn a lot in terms of thinking differently and questioning different aspect of life. The class was very easy, I was a 4th year student taking it though so take it with a grain of salt. He's really bad at replying to emails so just make office hrs or talk to him in person.
He was a really nice and accommodating professor, I understand some students had difficulty in reaching out to him, but other than that his lectures were thought-provoking always!
nonchalant lecturing style clashes with harsh marking... lectures do not follow slides or have an outline; he is simply waffling. midterm and final paper are then based on "course content"--what content? lack of rubrics for the few assignments and no feedback provided with grades (that seem to be based simply on vibes...)
one of those professors people like because they're funny and chill, HOWEVER, as a teacher, there is absolutely no structure in the course. the class was graded by few things (25% - weekly discussion boards, 30% - midterm, 40% - final essay) but with no clear grading criteria EVER and things were often posted late, whether you do well is a gamble
I really loved Professor Harts lectures, he was very funny and also very approachable. I found him to be a fair marker, his only flaw in my opinion was that he was rather difficult to reach via email and he was known to often post information/assignments late. Despite this the class was enjoyable and I would definitely recommend it!
A lack of teaching (no actual interaction with the professor), a lack of feedback (course ending in one week and have yet to recieve any marks or feedback for two midterms), a lack of clarity (only gave final essay outline 6 days out from due date) and no replies to emails or inquiries. Amazing readings but the professor ruined it, DO NOT TAKE.
Great prof. I've taken Plato and Classical Philosophy. He knows his stuff. I find it best to listen/take way less notes during lectures because he speaks pretty fast and goes into depth. The structure of the courses is super simple and clear. Definitely keep up with the readings so you are prepared for lectures. He's funny too!
Taking a class with Dr. Hart is what helped me decide to minor in philosophy. It's rare to find a prof so knowledgeable and passionate in their domain while maintaining their joy for teaching. His lectures are less structured than most so some may struggle but, he is extremely understanding when personal difficulties occurred. Would take 100% again
This prof is super engaging and passionate about the material. While the course can be challenging, using resources like unstuck ai alongside the free textbook helps make it manageable. Attend lectures, participate in discussions, and you'll leave with a fresh perspective.
He does not reply to emails, has terrible communication with his students, doesn't give you back marks of any assignments or work of any kind until the end of the semester/course, no feedback on anything, but marks decently on research paper. It is content heavy, have to read a lot and he explains nothing. Zero help. Self taught. A 4/10 experience
pretty outgoing and great prof! hard to stay in touch though because he doesn't respond to emails much. but he's an understanding person. lectures were interesting imo and there are no textbooks, he just posts the readings in class. tests + exam are fairly easy too as long as you do the readings/attend lectures
I loved loved LOVED this class SO MUCH!!! The Prof was nice and easy going from the start and he made it seem like the class wasn't a lecture but instead a conversation. Students could raise their hands to speak and ask questions as well as give thoughts on the days topic. He's like Sikowitz if he knew philosophy and was given more screentime.
Very passionate about philosophy
Funny, well spoken, caring, cool. He's actually a really cool person and easy going. He asks questions in random in class so be prepared to answer. I noticed the essay questions lean towards a little bit of objectivity over subjectivity so less of your opinion and more of what's written in the text.
SUUUUUUPER nice guy and understanding. Lectures are not boring. You'll do good if you do the readings and pay attention. 2nd time taking his classes!
the 3.7 rating for this prof is a flippen LIE, anyone who rates him less than a 5.0 simply got caught using chatgpt or somehow failed writing an easy essay, no "tests" midterm and final were just essays, and they're so light, prof is hella cool and chill, ppl are hating for no reason 10/10 course its literally a bird
Good professor, he really cares what he is talking about, and he is happy to help you. However, if you use AI as a crutch and rarely show up to the lectures, maybe don't come on here and talk.
yall, if you ever take a class at tmu take a class with prof hart. im absolutely no fan of philosophy, but this man talks in a way that just computes in my brainnn. he's VERY evidently passionate and knowledgeable about his stuff n i srsly walked out of every class contemplating my life, in a good way. weekly iscussion posts, 1 online test, 1 essay
Never provides feedback, and grading seems abstract. The only form of communication with him is the email he sends at the beginning of the course.
Would NOT recommend. There was no feedback on essays, so it was hard to know what he wanted or how to improve. He's a very hard grader but doesn't provide clear instructions or rubrics for essays. Felt like we were left guessing most of the time. If you like clear expectations and communication, this probably isn't the best choice.
Over 50% of students presented a weekly discussion post that looked suspiciously AI generated. Exams were easy if you participated. Lots of reading, but interesting reading. Why do students blame professors for their own ignorance? These are universities courses, not elementary school courses. Study, and you will pass with good grades, as always.
Professor Hart was very understanding and accommodating. He replied to emails fairly quickly and he was very respectful in his replies. The readings were on the longer side. His marking was pretty fair.
Apart from saying "good luck" on the final exam post on D2L, he did not engage with students & ignored those asking for help or assistance on discussion board posts. It took forever to get the quiz results, which I anxiously wondered what my grade was. He offered zero feedback on the assignments &module exercises. Overall, he did the bare minimum.
+ Avoid majority of the slides (excluding the 1st and the one about fallacies, they repeat the book and the readings prior to the slides OR useless to the work) + Quizzes and exam are easy (some have repeat of past questions) + Outdated course structure + Fast response through email, no response on discussion board + interesting content but long
I really liked prof Hart because he was super engaging and actually cares what he talks about but it was very hard to know how you were doing in the course because your mark is based on 3 things. he didnt reply to the discussion posts or give any feedback on the midterm and tutorials often ended early or were cancelled. i enjoyed his class tho
This was the worst course I have ever taken so far. The professor never responded to Q & A or discussion post sections, and made 2-3 announcements only for the entire semester. Grades were always delayed after delay. He assigns grades for the assignment without any assignment comments. Avoid this professor and this course.
Dr. Hart is one of the few professors in this school that really cares about the subject he is teaching, he has a passion that I rarely see. Recommended that you attend all his lectures as he teaches through dialogue and rarely uses slides or textbooks. If learning philosophy is your goal he is the professor to go to.
Although he sounds like a knowledgeable person, his monotonous voice puts you to sleep. He rarely shows slides, his lectures lack organization, and he is a very VERY hard marker.
he clearly cares about the subject but his course is so incredibly disorganized. Cancels classes right before they start, comes late, says he'll post discussion questions after every class but sometimes doesn't post it at all or posts it v late causing u to miss it, no rubrics, and the 2h lectures are usually 40 min of rambling, wouldn't recommend
I really enjoyed this class! He's funny and clearly cares a lot about what he teaches but the lectures can be hard to follow and important concepts fly by quick. I wish I had attended office hours but I ended up needing to direct most of my effort to my other classes this semester. I'd take a class with him again.
The other reviews are right, yeah he is pretty chill but his disorganization made the course unbearable. It's not hard, just all over the place. Unclear instructions and he often says one thing then does another. His tendency to switch things up out of nowhere makes me say its not a bird course if that's what ur looking for.
Very passionate about philosophy, and that is reflected in his lectures. But he is SOOO disorganized and a VERY tough grader. He'll forget to upload discussion posts after class, and the mix-ups caused me to miss a few, impacting my grade. His guidelines are also very unclear. Expect to read lots.
Professor Thomas Hart is one of the greatest philosophy professors out there and I highly recommend him if you love philosophy. But if you are here just for the easy grade, maybe pick somewhere else because he can be hard to understand if you aren't familiar with philosophy. Can be disorganized but is very passionate, funny, and educational!
I mean he's a dry lecturer but I guess he's decent at marking?
Prof Hart is very engaging and knowledgeable but he's disorganized and never gives feedback. Supposed to have discussion posts due at midnight after class but he often forgot to post until later with no reminder so it was so easy to forget about them which sucked because they were a big part of the grade. Don't even try emailing him lol.
Very interesting and engaging lectures. Read the posted readings and complete the discussion posts! It is not a difficult course if you enjoy reading philosophical texts, if not… do not take it.
i really liked his lectures, and he was incredibly entertaining to listen to but just a bit hard to follow at times because he'd ramble a lot and id just get even more lost. id attend his lectures again, maybe not for a class just as a onlooker because philosophy isn't exactly my strong suit.
He gives no feedback, posts discussion questions late, inconsistent, announces cancelled classes after you've already traveled an hour to get there, doesn't reply to emails, rambles for the entire class, doesn't follow the course outline, and he believes if someone breaks into your home you shouldn't harm them... OH BROTHER
he's a pretty informal and chill prof, which was nice. however, it was hard to keep up with his lectures as his lectures did not have a structure to it...
doesn't always reply to emails, the most boring prof i've ever had, seems like a nice guy but omg. he just rambles. it never ends and he's so hard to follow. doesn't usually use slides. his tests were weirdly difficult, but he was generous with the essay grading and the discussion posts are just for completion so don't sweat it.
It was like he suddenly realized he was a professor the day the class started, it was so disorganized. There was probably students that didn't check their email and submitted a whole wrong assignment because he changed basically the entire course structure. Someone teach him D2L. Interesting (but rambling) lectures, easy grader, easy material.
Professor Hart is what you imagine a Philosophy professor would/should be like. I looked forward to his class every week and was fully engrossed while he lectured. Great prof, great person, great course. I'll be on the look out for future courses by Professor Hart. He is a tough marker though.
I love this man dearly but is he ever a confusing professor. His lectures were very entertaining and funny, and he is amazing to listen to. However, he is deeply disorganized and unclear about what is required for tests/assignments. Multiple people were confused when a test came up, not to add that the material is very confusing and abstract.
He is engaging when it comes to lecturing, but there is a lot to discuss about him. First of all, he's a tough marker, especially when he has 2 tests and an assignment, with weekly discussion posts. He rambles a lot; if you miss him for a second, you're lost. It wasn't a bird course btw. If you don't like phl, don't take it cuz it seems easy.
