He's a great guy and very helpful
He's the best Lecturer we have.
Awesome! Easy Class, laid back, and you will learn alot! Good graduate class to take.
Professor Hemmick is one of Stony Brook's finest professors. He is engaging and fun, and I really felt that I learned a lot in his class.
A professor looking to help the students learn. He really cares about the students, and goes out of his way for them. A great guy.
Thomas Hemmick is God!
GREAT PROFESSOR!!!!!!!!
Made class more intresting than it needed to be. Gave reviews on weekends to help study for the midterms. Great professor nothing to say but good things. Cant wait to take PHY122 with him.
best phy prof at sbu
hilarious guy. best professor ever. He gave weekend reviews before every exams. He devoted so much time to give us review sessions. You'll learn alot in class.
Quite possibly the best prof i will ever have in my life. he is extremely clear, helpful, makes class actually nice to pay attention to and holds 10-6hr reviews on weekends! That's some devotion to the students! He makes physics as painless as possible. He's an excellent A++++++++ prof!
hands down best professor I've had yet
Can't say enough about him. He devotes too much of his personal time to students. Spends hours and I can see him tire down during his review sessions. Gives you every chance to do well but if you still mess you, it's your fault. Someone buy this guy a case of Dr. Pepper. Seems like his favorite.
He makes physics fun. He is funny and loves teaching. He is cares about students.
you got to take him for every class
He's outstanding. I thank God that I had a him for a prof. never thoguht i could do well in physics, but he worked with me until i "got it"... which was usually extremely fast b/c the way he teaches. Best prof int he world. Funny, nice, cares, loves his job, works hard.....AMAZING!!!!!!
Great professor, funny, has very, very, helpful review sessions
very interesting, thorough review sessions, straight forward tests (no trickery), good teacher
recommend this prof. his review sessions really really help. practice exams are similar to real exams....u should take his class...
Great professor and never seen someone so devoted to students and teaching makes hard stuff really easy to understand, you should definitely take him. He is great and interesting. Won‘t regret it, I promise.
You gotta love professor Hemmick! He is very caring and a man who loves what he is doing.
One of the most caring, and hard-working, professors I have ever encountered. If you have to take physics, do it with him.
HILLARIOUS!!! One of the funniest professors at SBU. A pleasure to have him as a professor!!!!!!!!!! He really cares about the students and this is what makes him special
This professor is the man. i thought he was a good lecturer, but then i saw how much time he was on campus being the man. He will teach you very well, He is the man
Awesome!!!! Cares so much about the students!
this prof. is cute..and he can explain stuff really well!! good good good!!
He is a very nice guy who is willing you if you ask him.
best prof. ever
THIS MAN KNOWS HIS STUFF NOT TO MENTION HOW TO GRAB THE ATTENTION OF A CLASS OF 500 ..IVE NEVER LIKED PHYSICS UNTILL I TOOK HEMMICK HES HALARIOUS.. HE MAKES PHYSICS SEEM LIKE A BASKET WEAVING CLASS .. HONESTLY THERE IS NO FORMULA SHEETS BUT WITH HEMMICK HE ALWAYS HAS THE BEST TRICKS TO REMEMBER FORMULAS WHICH IS ACTUALLY VERY IMPORTANT FOR MCAT PRE
Prof. Hemmick is one of the most amazing professors at Stony Brook. The world needs more educators like him. I have learned more from Hemmick than any other class. He made a very challenging subject clear. The dedication to teaching this man puts in unexplainable. He hands an A over to you all you have to do is take it. I love him!!!!!
He is the best physics professor...you can't go to sleep during his lectures because he has many interesting stories to tell...I was on the verge of a C- but i did good on the final and ended up with a B+...i would certainly recommend him
I absolutely agree with everyone else, this has been by far the best professor i have ever had in stony brook. I think its amazing that he takes the time out of his life, without being paid, to give 8 hour long reviews before the tests. I absolutely understand physics because of him. Also very fair tests, always exactly on what he has taught.
He has a very odd passion for physics. You can see it in his face and hear it in his voice, the passion that he speaks of physics with. It's a little scary. Overall, nice guy, good professor.
This guy is the man! He makes physics extremely interesting, and is so helpful it's not even funny. He hold around 4 8 hour review sessions for each exam, and he goes through every problem in detail. This professor is by far the BEST in the University. With an extreme passion for physics, if you study and go to review, you will surely get an A.
great professors. him and axel are a great time. all willing to go out of their way for you.
very helpful, however the subject require a lot of work and memorization
the best professor i ever meet!!!no one could do such wonderful thing for review section and spend more than 8 hours for every review.moreover, he likes to tell story during the class, highly recommend, take this professor!!!
Holds 8 hour review sessions before test which he is not paid for... I think that alone speaks volumes about his willingness to teach. So long as you attend his reviews and lectures, I never neededto pick up the textbook... ever

hemmick is the man. no other great physic prof. gives away one question from hw for the exam. awesome
he is the best! the material can be challenging, but he makes class fun. he is hysterical and will keep you interested and awake!!
He's one of the best professors you can have on this campus. He's very committed to teaching his students physics. He's crystal clear in his lectures. Also go to the review session, after going everything make so much sense. The 2 midterms and final is easy as long as you study and go to the review session. take this professor!!!!
Well, physics is easy in the first place. I've never attended any review session and still got an A. (I am a part-time student.) Hemmick's lecture is funny, but sometimes it is just enjoyable without really getting into the physics content itself. Not present during his office hour. Hard to find him!
Professor Hemmick made me believe in public education again. He loves physics, he loves his students, he loves teaching. You couldn't ask for a better teacher, what with all his "ding ding ding dings!" and "fiom"'s and "neee" and "neeow"s LOL love love love him to pieces, he's adorable and funny and absolutely the best!!!
Freaking awesome , i want to marry him
THE BEST of THE BEST!!! Absolutely enjoy his class, very entertaining lectures, so you actually DO want to come to class. He makes everyone laugh, although at first it was kind of awkward. His tests are fair, if you attend his reviews (which he gives on weekends, but it's totally worth it if you want to do good on a test).highly recommend him!!
Prof. H is amazing! He truly loves what he does. He is very clear in his expections and wants everyone to do well. He is so dedicated to his work that his 8 hour reviews are truly life savers. I highly recommend and him.
LOVES teaching, every class is a performance, very entertaining, you learn a lot and although he provides no Formula sheet, tests are easy because he teachs so well, asks fair questions and gives 8 hour review sessions.Im Bio major, not a big physics buff, but he is still the best Prof I ever had.I'm emotional speaking of him, Inspiring, magnificent
Same Guy as below. One small flaw, Homework is painfully challenging. Help Room and Office hours often needed, and your fellow students. Easiest solution, www.Cramster.com, for 40 bucks a year you get all the answers. Save yourself the aggravation, Its worth the $$$, and you still learn how to do the problem in the process, it shows the method
He talks way too much during lecture about random stories - Don't really care - We could finish the lecture in 20 minutes if he would stop side tracking with random stories and wasting time. He also screams in the mic a lot which gives me a headache by the end of the lecture which is why people don't go to lecture. He is Annoying and Wastes Time.
Is this the Hemmick in my class. Why he gets "Hot" points. Do you guys just want to be sacastic about the fact that he is unable to teach thermodynamic? I think my high school teacher is better than him .However, this is SB, what do you expect. I always think pofessors do not teach us the real thing, because we did not pay enough tuition.
Professor Hemmick is an amazing teacher. His methods (especially in the latter half of the course) are clearer than the book's and his lectures are very entertaining. His tests are fair and we learn all the material well. Appreciate Hemmick b/c most people taking the main sequence physics right now aren't happy with the course or the teachers.
ok. He is a great teacher and his review sessions are saviors. His exams aren't hard at all if you do all the work. He knows what he is talking about and talks about physics with passion. Definitely, better than half the physics professors at stony brook. The text book is useless, so don't even bother to buy because it is a waste of money.
Best science professor I've had at Stony Brook. He tries really hard to make sure you understand. Very helpful and interesting =) I was scared going into physics because I'm not good at calc but the course wasn't bad at all because of his teaching methods
Okay, people dissing Hemmick's stories, his stories actually RELATE to what he's teaching and it helps us relate what we're learning to real life so shut up! HEMMICK ROCKS MY SOCKS!!!
one of the best professor at SB. vivid and enthusiastic at teaching. humorous and really cares about student. Try to help students to have highest possible grades yet make sure they acturally hearns the material. Very nice professor.
one of the best professor at SB. very humourous and cares about students. try to help boost students' grade yet make sure they actually learns the material. vivid and enthusiastic style. Highly recommended teacher
Best teacher at SB. Go to class do the work go to review....easy A, Hemmick is the man! anyone saying anything else didn't want to learn anything.
I LOVE HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great teacher - doesn't take himself too serious, believes in what he teaches, looks like he enjoys teaching - enjoyed the class
really nice. he gives review classes which are really helpfull for your exam.
One of the best teacher's i've ever had, you can tell he loves teaching and loves physics, he is extremely helpful and actually made me enjoy learning, physics and knows how to keep everyone entertained with stories and jokes and the most random stuff ever. I'm so upset he's not teaching 122 next semester.
Terrific professor! He truly puts effort into making sure his students understand the material, makes jokes and gives fun examples to make class interesting. Fully understand what he's talking about/how to do his problems and you'll be fine. There is a lot of formulas to remember though so don't try to cram last minute.
He treats everyone with respect. THIS PROFESSOR IS AMAZING LITERALLY N I feel bad that he will not be teaching PHY122 in FALL10. He will be teaching PHY131 and PHY132,respectively--those kids r so lucky. He does not use lecture notes, "how can u lecture faster than you write" his words. EXTREMELY GOOD AT TEACHING. He tells real n cool stories too.
This professor is amazing. He goes out of his way to explain things in the best possible way. He is so dedicated that he gives an 8 hour review session on his day off to help students before the midterms. The subject matter is not easy, but this Prof. makes it fun to learn the difficult subjects.
He makes physics real interesting. Go to his classes, you'll learn.
i love his jokes with loud and clear voice. It is easy to understand his lecture(not all the time) and if u watch or go to review session b4 midterms ull get good grades. Think carefully in his exams(some problems will be reversed or changed a little from midterm practice)
So glad to have him as a teacher. Only dread is that the class is at 7:25 in the morning. Despite the awful time slot, he makes the class enjoyable. GO TO HIS TEST REVIEWS. The questions that are on the test are usually ones that are gone over during the review. Highly recommend. He also has a great sense of humor too. You just need to stay on task
Extremely helpful and goes out of his way to make sure you understand the concepts. He has a great personality and sense of humor -- I guarantee you won't fall asleep in his class although it's at 7:25am. Go to his review sessions and stay the entire length. Highly recommended, anybody who thinks otherwise is a slacker.
-.- his joke is so cold....not even funny... 7 20 morning class.. i really can't concentrate..
Mandatory attendance is excessive. Lab and recitation grading standards are inconsistent across sections. Exams are very easy. Class is as easy an A as physics can get. Too much focus on basic problem solving rather than on really understanding and appreciating physics. Great lecturer -- puts in a lot of effort into everything in this course.
He's a great guy and a great teacher. Very helpful. If you go to class, do the homework, and go to the reviews (a must - some questions end up on the test), the class will be VERY EASY. He moves very quickly, so skipping class is a bad move.
hemmick is all around THE MAN. dont believe the people who rate low, they dont appreciate good professors when they get them.
The best professor I had in Stony Brook University. Gives students every opportunity to succeed including really helpful review sessions before exams. Hard not to do well in this class if you do all the work and attend/watch all the review sessions.
Cares about his students, funny, interactive, easy to understand. Do your work, study and you will get an A if you deserve it. Probably one of the best physics teachers, so take any class you can with him!
He is an absolute god-send. An 8-hr review b4 exams, r u serious!! Only if this class wasn't so damn early...but no complaints about the guy. I'm not sure if we really LEARNED physics, but he sure as hell made it easier to comprehend, not to mention he's always interactive and mostly comedic. He can talk for days, and not just about physics
the best professor in stony brook. the one, and the ony.!!!!take his class if you need PHY131.
Was very interactive, explained everything clearly, kept us awake for the 7:25 a.m. class which is pretty hard to do.
Best teacher I ever had. If you go to the reviews it is extremely easy to do well.
This man is my favorite in the entire school. If I didn't have him for physics I don't know what I would have done; he is legit the best teacher ever. I loved him even though he made 7:20am classes mandatory, this man was the man. If you can get him, even at 7:20, do it, you won't regret it.
I've had many intolerable physics teacher, but Hemmick is an exception. Hemmick is a rare breed of teachers within the science community who has the gift to make challenging subjects understandable and interesting. Hemmick is simply the best.
Lively and Entertaining
he's really good prof. teaches really good. He do the midterm review session on Saturday before the exam, and sometimes he gives the problems from review session on exam.
Great professor overall, I felt like I learned a lot in his class. He has a 6-8 hour review session before each of the exams, the homework takes a reasonable amount of time, and with all of the components and study time there is a lot involved. The tests are usually more involved than the practice exams he gives.
He does not curve. He holds 6-8 hours review session before every exam which helps. One thing I don't like about him that he talks a lot. So if you go to his office hour, he will waste half of the time talking about random stuff. He is funny, helpful and post lecture video online. >90 is an A in his class. No clicker question counts.
No formula sheets or graphing calculators allowed on tests. But, this guy has supernatural powers when it comes to explaining stuff. During his 6-8 hour reviews, you would walk in feeling clueless, and then walk out feeling like you can take the test in your sleep. He doesn't use ppt slides but derives everything on the spot. Amazing professor
I am completely convinced that this man could teach calculus-based physics to a monkey if he tried. He's funny, his lectures are interesting, and he's without a doubt the best teacher I've had in my life.
He is the best teacher i had in stony brook University. His reviews are really helpful. I heard PHY was hard but this guy made it clear. If youre taking physics choose this guy, he is the best. Test are really easy if you study. DASSSIIT!!
Great Professor. No matter who you take PHY 132 with its going to be tough, so it might as well be with Hemmick. On the other hand, I think the fact that the course was easy worked against me, since any chump with a memory could be prepared for his final exam. Anyway his lectures are clear, reviews are helpful and grading is ok.
This man is the best physics prof in Stony Brook. His grading is fair, he makes it understandable and gets you ready for all exams. go to class and rec., go to lab (no write-ups), do the HW (online). Thats half of the points right there. GO TO THE EXAM REVIEWS!!! and study them and its an easy B. great teacher he actually cares.
Funny, easy, crystal clear.he makes physics easy, but tricky on the exams.
One of the best professor I've ever met. Very clear and concise lectures. Fair tests. Entertaining lectures. His review section will help you ace his test. 5 stars =D
Prof H is an extremely funny teacher with a great way of explaining complex ideas. I wouldn't want to have anyone else for my 7:25 am class. He's so good that he makes it bearable to be up that early.
super cool
Great teacher who explains everything clearly. He wants you to do well and gives great review sessions and easy tests.
his tests are really hard, study a lot and go to all review sessions. this man is SMART on a different level. he's hot too :P
This guy is a very good person. The sole reason I decided to take 131 instead of 121 was because of him. His tests are definitely difficult even though he does indeed go out of his way to help his students. He is not good at all with his emails. If you email him, you'll be lucky if you got a reply within two weeks. hard tests, great prof.
He's a great man. He gives very interesting and funny stories pertaining to the subject matter. He teaches the material better than I've seen previously. Best professor I've had so far.
Great personality, tests are very difficult. He holds an 8 hour review session for each midterm on the weekend to help students understand the material. For the final he holds two review sessions. Only complaint would be that he didn't cover the curriculum fast enough and we had to cram 3 chapters of thermo-dynamics into two weeks.
He is extremely enthusiastic about physics and makes it bearable to get up at 7:25am three days a week. He synthesizes his lectures on the spot. He doesn't even use powerpoint presentations. Watch the lecture and go to review sessions. Read the book as much as possible and go to office hours. The exams are difficult but you can do well if you focus
SIMPLY AWESOME!!
brilliiant man that is able to convey his intelligence to others, unlike many that paralell his knowledge tests are difficult but more than aceable if you learn to apply his methods, manage your time efficiently and attend review sesssions
most engaging professor Iv had between 3 different colleges, could do onsite demos though but his competence in technology almost makes up for it
AWSOME! Go to the review. Be present in the class. DO well on the exam. EASY A! Very helpful, the review is a MUST to do well in the exam. He basically shows you every format of the questions that is going to be on the exam at the review. But he does not like being absent, so be careful.
He's energetic and connects well with students. But he's not so helpful outside of the classroom. Try going to his office hours and you'll see. There are too many students asking for help and half the time he just wastes the two hours telling stories. One good thing he does is review sessions before tests
best professor in the world, he doesn't teach, he performs
This guy is great, one of the best professors I've had so far at SBU. He explains how to do everything prior to tests in his review session.
OKAY. you are really lucky to have this guy for physics. he is THE BEST. makes the material easy to understand and gives alot of chances. the tests arent hard if you study and watch his review sessions. all in all, HES TOOOOOOOOOO GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD. TAKE HIS CLASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS. seriously.
Very useful professor, he holds a 6hr long review session before midterms and final which is very useful too. Even though physics itself is hard, he makes it easier for the students!
The best professor I have ever met
The man teaches unbelievably well, I was good at physics before hand, but now I am even better. MY advice: go to the review sessions before tests. Hemmick teaches you exactly what you need to know and how to do the problem in the future
Great teacher. Very helpful especially before the test. Going to the review session helps ALOT.
He should receive a nobel prize in teaching!!
This teacher is amazing! He explains everything really well and performs out problems so that you can understand things in real life. I didn't fall off track that bad but whenever he had his review sessions, I SUDDENLY BECAME A PHYSICS EXPERT, especially for the final. He is the best, he's interesting, entertaining, &extremely helpful. God bless him
By FAR the best professor Ive had in physics or otherwise. He is engaging and enthusiastic: he obviously loves what hes teaching. He uses personal anecdotes and demonstrations and hes funny. He makes a 600+ student lecture seem small. He holds 8 hour review sessions before every exam and two before the final. He genuinely cares. Seriously the best.
Hands down one of my favorite professors, he's really helpful. If you don't understand the first time he will rephrase until you get it. He holds review sessions (he also writes the test) and has often gone over problems that were on the exam. Also if you show up early he plays music videos at your request before lecture.
Fantastic teacher! If you miss his reviews and you fail it's your own fault. His reviews are 100% worth it, and can get you an easy A if you just listen.
Always use clicker to check the feedback. Clearly distinct different concepts. Humor and Help a lot.
He spoon feeds the methodical approach necessary to ace the exam. This is useful for maintaining a normal (uncurved) distribution of grades but unfortunate because it enables the lazy freshman who take the class and leave with a grade that does not correlate well with an understanding of the material.
Lectures are okay, but not that helpful. His review sessions are where he does the real teaching. They are amazing and not that bad to sit through even though they are 8 eight hours per midterm and two days for the final.
By far the best professor in SBU! I Needed help with some integrals because my math was a bit behind for the class. He changed his office hour to the same day I asked him. And took his time to help me even though students were waiting. Excellent!
Great professor, really paves the way and encourages students to pursue a interest in physics by making it easy and understandable.
The material in PHY 131/132 is very difficult, but Hemmick makes it much easier to understand. He writes out his lectures on the spot and really knows how to keep everyone engaged. Lectures are streamed online too. Also his 8 hour review sessions (on the weekend!) are absolutely amazing and so helpful. Definitely one of the best professors in SBU.
One of the best professors in SBU.
Hemmick is the man! A good saxophone player too!
a great professor. Really knows the subject. often proves the textbook wrong and explains the details. you could learn a lot in this class. He will make you love physics. The tests are little hard but if you attend the review it will be very useful. He makes the class very interesting and sometimes funny. highly recommend taking his classes.
Professor Hemmick is great. He keeps students engaged and interested, helps create an intuition about the topics, and wants students to succeed. He does review sessions before each midterm and the final, which help tremendously to develop problem solving skills. Lectures and reviews are also available online. He's also approachable and patient
Great professor, he's funny and crystal clear on everything he teaches. Both classes have tough material in it but Prof Hemmick does his best to make it easy to learn.
Seriously one of the best professors at SBU. He's funny and crystal clear with everything he teaches. Breaks difficult problems down and makes the difficult physics not seem so difficult. He holds amazing 6-8 hour weekend review sessions before tests. If you can get him, choose him. You won't regret it, even if its 8 am class.
By far the best professor in Stony Brook. You'll be disappointed when Stephens comes in. Genuinely cares about students. You'll hate waking up so early, especially since thursday is a big party night and everyone on campus is doing something, but he makes class interesting and fun.
amazing professor. makes physics very easy and interesting. only professor who can make the early morning classes fun and interesting. knows his craft very well. often proves the textbook wrong. you can die to take him
Hemmick is the man; intro to physics is of course difficult, but hemmick gives you you're best shot if you stick with lectures and go to the reviews. Much better than stephens.
Great guy. Also attending review sessions are a must, but if you work you'll do fine.
Best professor I have ever had. Very informative, helpful, and holds 8 hour reviews before every test.
BEST TEACHER.
Prof Hemmick was my favorite teacher at stonybrook
Best professor ever out of all the physics professors. Will show the BEST approaches to actually learning the material. His humor is just so awesome, and it actually HELPS you with the material!!! Actually cares for his students, and makes very very reasonable choices for the students. You seriously cannot go wrong with choosing Hemmick. :')
Hated physics all through high school and almost didn't go into electrical engineering because of how much I despised it. He made physics fun and easy.
Watch and study the review videos & attend the 8hr review session. Will save your grade.
By far the best physics professor at Stony Brook. The material is still very hard, but kind of expected in this class. Office hours are helpful and homework is somewhat reasonable. Attendance is somewhat mandatory because of clicker questions.
You actually can't skip class because attendance is taken, but he's a great prof. Helpful to the point where he sticks around after lecture in Javits and you can ask him questions. Go to the 7-8 hour reviews, you can walk in knowing nothing and walk out able to get at least an 80. Don't buy the textbook, buy a mastering physics access code.
Love this guy, he makes waking up at 7am worth while! He also have very helpful review sessions before an exam.
God Professor Hemmick is a good teacher. He is literally one of those great professorlecturers that every student should have in college. Everything he teaches is on point, tests are literally EVERYTHING discussed from his 6-8 hour review session. If you plan on taking physics coming into college, take it with this guy. Absolute BEAST.
Prof. Hemmick really enjoys what he does and it shows. His enthusiasm will always keep you awake and interested (regardless of how tired you are). After class, he always takes questions from students and explains thoroughly. He regularly emails his students with videos and notes he feels will help make both the homework and studying easier.
THE BEST PROFESSOR EVER! REALLY KNOW THE SUBJECT AND ARE VERY HELPFUL DURING Office hours. He also gives review classes before every midterm.
Great professor!
Funny with multiple sense of humor Can go through lessons at a fast pace Uses his body as an example to demonstrate physics Expectations are fair
Professor Hemmick is amazing at what he does. His lectures are entertaining, and if you show up to class and attend his review sessions, you are almost guaranteed to do well. If you have the opportunity to take a class with Hemmick, DO IT!
He's test is hard and he behave different what he said but he is ok.
I actually didn't take his section but I always go to his review session and HE IS AMAZING. I went from knowing nothing to being able to do most of the questions after going to his review session!
I took part of this course in high school so it is pretty easy for me but Hemmick clears things up I had trouble with. If it were any other teacher I wouldn't be willing to wake up for his class.
Professor Hemmick is definitely one of the best at Stony Brook. He's clear, concise, and knows what he's talking about. That being said, his class is not easy. Do not skip lecture, as your grade in his class will also rely heavily upon attendance and homework. Please, go to his 8 hour review sessions. He basically tells you what will be on the test
One of the best professors I have ever seen
amazing and very knowledgeable
Hemmick is the man. This past semester I think we gave him like 3 standing ovations during lectures. He knows the homework system is stupid. GO TO HIS REVIEW SESSIONS. I jumped from a C to an A- because I went and watched review videos. He makes learning physics easy. Clicker questions for attendance, but I think you can skip like 5 days.
Hemmick is one of the best professors at Stony Brook. He's hilarious and is really enthusiastic about physics! Never leave his class without a good laugh :) Do well on webassign and tests and you should be set. Weekly recitation grades add up so study hard. Oh and if you miss a lot of clicker questions you're in trouble so get to class on time!
I didn't really find Professor Hemmick to be that good of a teacher--compared to others, his teaching style may seem a blessing, although I personally found that much of the lectures in class that are completed in his SMART notebook software don't happen to have a lot of content to them despite covering everything that was listed in the curriculum.
His class was the first physics class I took that I really understood. I don't think I was ever awake during regular lectures, but as long as you go and click in, go to his eight hour review class, and watch the review videos, then you will do fine.
Awesome professor, extremely funny. There is a lot of content and it can be difficult at times, but he holds 6+ hour review sessions before exams, has lectures online, and posts many sample problem and solution videos. Attendance is mandatory, but I didn't mind. He makes physics fun. Just put in the effort and you will do fine.
Hemmick is, by far, my favorite professor. As a physics major i was scared when i first entered Stony Brook as a freshman but Hemmick is nice, jolly, and makes the material clear. He doesn't add superfluous knowledge and try to prove how smart he is.
I had never taken physics before and I probably wouldn't have done well in the course if it weren't for his awesome review sessions and review videos that he posts online. The grading is very lenient and getting a good grade in his class isn't that difficult. BUT YOU WILL NEED TO SPEND SOMETIME TO REVIEW!
Simply put: One of the best physics professors out there. Extremely good at what he does and makes very helpful review videos. Lectures are very interesting making them worth it even at 8 am. Exams are difficult but not if you pay attention to his him and attend the review sessions he holds before exams.
Teaches material with enthusiasm and explains methods clearly. Answer keys for test reviews often have errors. Will NOT reply to your emails. EVER.
A great professor who really loves what he teaches, his tests could be a bit difficult at times but definitely do able, especially since for every exam he held an 8 hour review session which was really really helpful. Textbook was useful, there is really no need to get it.
I love him!!!!
Best professor and class EVER. It's not a hard course, so if you do your part you will do well. I found out the hard way, but he is very fair in terms of exams and offers redemption if he sees improvement (that's how I got a B). He puts in a very respectable amount of work to ensure your success in the course, so be wise. 8 hour reviews are amazing
PHY 131 and 132 were very tough courses. Prof Hemmick knows that, and accommodates the students by making thorough review videos, and spending 8 hours giving a great review lecture before each exam. If you stay on top of the HW and attend the review lectures, you are sure to do well on exams.
Best professor at stony hands down
AMAZING
If you understand the homework questions, the examples he put up on blackboard, and most importantly the review questions, you will pass the class. Hilarious, slow-pace lecture.
A great teacher who really knows how to communicate the material to students
I have an 8 AM class with this guy and his class manages to wake me up. He knows his subject really well and more importantly, he knows how to engage his audience. Very approachable. The tests and homework can be tough but there is plenty of help to be found. He can make stuff that's actually tough seem easy. I don't know if that's good or bad.
Really amazing professor. He loves teaching so he will actually teach you the material and does not require you to do textbook readings. The textbook isn't really necessary. He holds 8 hour reviews on the Saturday before an exam and will spend it teaching you the exam. GO TO THEM. He is super funny and interesting and passionate.
Hemmick is one of the best teachers I've ever had. It's amazing the energy he brings to the lecture hall and how well he is able to break down and explain the material for you, in both a concise and clear way.
Professor Hemmick defines what it means to be a good professor. He is humorous, compassionate, funny, and laid back. If you show up to his class and ask questions, you will learn the material inside and out without much difficulty. His tests are pretty difficult, but they're manageable if you just put in the effort. An amazing individual.
Hes a blast and a solid teacher
I love Hemmick. Hemmick is bae
Best professor in terms of teaching and arguably knowledge
If you go to the review sessions you'll get an A.
Thomas Hemmick is the perfect example of fairness. He gives you so much review that if you do all that he gives you, there's no way you won't know how to do well on the test. A large proportion of his class gets A's. He has so much energy and passion for physics that the class periods will fly by. His 10 hour review sessions are highly recommended.
Prof. Hemmick is one of the greatest professors on campus. He will do whatever it takes to ensure the success of his students and true comprehension of the material.
Prof. Hemmick is the best!!! Take his classes!! Every class is fun and although you have to put in the work for your grade, if you go to the help room, you can get the homework done in a few hours every week. Go up to him after class and ask questions-- he is friendly!
hes awesome
Hemmick is amazing! Best professor I've had. His lectures are clear, understandable, and enjoyable. His grading is very fair. He has so many review opportunities and doesn't throw any curve balls on his tests. If you put in the time and effort to watch the review videos and attend the 8 hour review sessions, you'll get an A. Hemmick is the G.O.A.T.
I love Hemmick. He's awesome.
Such an awesome guy overall. Really cares about his students doing well
Really makes physics interesting. I believe in sleeping but I woke myself up at 8 AM every day just because of him. Easy A if you go to class, finish homework, and go to the (extremely helpful) 8 hour review session before every exam.
Hemmick is the ideal professor. In terms of teaching his students not only how to do something but also why, he is a very hard act to follow.
I took Pofessore Hemmick's class online this summer, and coming from another university I was a little nervous. BUT he is by far the most amazing professor I have ever had. I am not so strong in physics, but he simplifies complex topics so that you can actually understand them and not just memorize formulas. Definitely recommend taking his class.
He is a GOD. Best teacher by far for any Physics class in Stony. Phy 132 is a little bit more complex, but put in roughly 2.5 days and you'll get a 90+ on every exam.
He wants students make read all about books. It takes too much time for studying only for phy. That was SO WASTED.
Great teacher. 8 hour reviews are very helpful, go to those and you'll be fine.
Fantastic teacher. He really gives you the resources to prepare for the midterms and tries to make his 8 AMs worth it. I will most likely try to take his PHY 132 class. He gives homework weekly and the extra credit is literally a study guide. He lives up to his reputation.
THE nicest professor ever
Hemmick is a great professor. It's obvious he wants his students to succeed, to the point where he gives 8 hour review sessions before each test. The lectures are early, but productive.
One of the best professors in the school. I can guarantee that you will not regret taking his 8 A.M class.
All the study material he gives is world changing, it makes the class pretty simple to study for. Also, he is VERY generous with the final and is just a cool guy in general.
Great professor. Clearly shows that he cares and values his students' success. Do all of his homeworks and watch all the extra credit review videos and prepare well for the final. The final does wonders for your final grade. Do a little bit above average on the first two exams and you should be able to get an A no problem.
Hemmick really cares about the success of his students. Would do anything to make sure that we understood the material, even if that meant holding 8hour reviews before the exam on the weekend. Great professor, but an even better human being. He has his own ways of teaching the most difficult topics and makes it extremely simple. Definitely take him
Hemmick is great! Class is at 8AM but he tells funny stories and has enough energy to feed the whole room. 90+ gets an A, 85+ gets an A-, and so on. Midterms are only 15% of your grade. Use his extra credit videos!! They're really helpful.
He's a great professor and give you many extra credits. The test are easy and he gives you review sessions before the test every time.
Let's face it. Physics is not an easy subject. That being said, Prof. H. genuinely cares for his students (all 700 of them) and tries his absolute hardest to make sure you understand the content. Final grade is based on a % system, but takes into account improvement over the semester. Use all the resources he provides and you will get an A.
Professor Hemmick has got to be the best professor I've ever had. Although his lectures are only available at 8AM, they are definitely worth getting up for. He makes hard subjects understandable for students and often tells really great stories that also are somewhat physics related. If there's any physics class you need to take, take Hemmick's
Big daddy hemmick is the best! Gives you a tremendous amount of resources to do well in the class. Definitely take 131 and 132 with him!
PHY131 and 132 are probably some of the easiest A's you will get. His grading policy is fair and he gives you a better grade if you improved. I'd suggest taking the online class because you don't have to wake up early and it's the same as the actual lectures.
Taking physics lab online was no problem. BUT, the semester has ended and only 1/10 labs have been graded. If you have any questions, forget about it. The professor has also dodged every email that I have sent. So if you take 133 online, you are on your own. No feedbackno room for improvement. Also ZERO interaction and no syllabus.....
Dr. Hemmick as the 131 online professor is very good. Grading is fair, and there is a lot of materials online to review for exams. Both his lectures and the supplemental materials are a great base to actually learn the material. HOWEVER, for online 133 he was not so great. On the day I handed in my last lab, I had just one grade in.
He is the Best professor I ever had.
I normally do not give reviews for professors. I feel like my opinion should not shape the viewpoints of other students. HOWEVER. Professor Hemmick, or as most people say Dr. H is the best professor at Stony Brook University. I didn't even take high school physics, yet I understood everything that he taught. Thank you Dr.H for making physics fun.
Hemmick is a great professor. He genuinely wants to give you an A. All the resources are there for you to be able to do so. 8 AM is a drag but if you're concerned about your grades, Hemmick will make it easy for you to do well. Lots of resources available through him.
He's the goat
Thomas Hemmick is a fantastic professor who cares about his students and actively wants those same students to succeed as well as they can. His lectures are engaging and his presence in the lecture hall is commanding. I feel nothing but respect and admiration for him. If you have the option, TAKE HEMMICK'S CLASS!
One of the best physics professors I ever had in my life. He explains physics to the core which is a good thing if it's a beginners course. The exams were super easy as the questions were very similar to the review material. Apart from that, he is hilarious and answers almost any questions. I think his early morning classes are worth it for that A.
Great class for freshman students, and overall a great professor.
I guess he was a good professor. Managed to stay on track and deliver the information well. Talks a lot of trash about your previous physics teachers, which is annoying at times. Don't bother going to review sessions - just watch them online later. Midterms are super easy as long as you do the homeworks and watch extra credit videos.
Words cant describe the angel that is Hemmick. Honestly you can love or hate physics but Hemmick is one of those professors you wish you had for every single class for the rest of your life. I owe my soul to him. Just take him , just take Hemmick.
Great lectures and extra credit. Available after lectures and stays until all questions are answered, even if it means he has to stay more than 1.5 hrs. Review sessions are wonderful and extra credit videos further reinforce the content. Resistance is futile; even if you don' want to learn physics, he will make sure you will!
The best teacher that I've never met. I took Hemmick's online physics class this summer since its difficult at the college I goto and this was probably one of the best classes I have taken ever. I actually learned physics and understood it. Just watch the lecture videos and do the extra credit and you are fine if you are taking his online course.
SBU gem professor
GOD sent man! He is one of the best professors at Stony! He genuinely cares for his students and will do anything in his power to make sure you get that A! The material is obviously hard, but he makes everything super fair and easy. Take him, you WILL NOT regret it.
Doesn't teach Physics at all. He just makes jokes half of the time rather than making sure we learn
I am very disappointed to see his rating is that high. He is good at teaching in person class. He literally accuse everyone for cheating on online exams even it is a open note, and allows three attempts on the exam. He calls out students for using all the attempts on the exam. SBU Physics department is overall a shame.
Easy A if you know what you're doing in each lab experiment. Sometimes, however, the experiments can take a long time because Hemmick doesn't respond to emails like many have mentioned to me. Another nuisance I dealt with is that labs weren't graded in a more timely fashion. 10/10 overall because the videos (mostly) simplified the procedures :)
Avoid this class with Hemmick. He is the worst choice for intro Physics class. This man threatened students to fail whole class if he notice someone uses notes, or formula sheets on the exams. At worst he already have failed some students a whole course for using discord, where he should have just give them 0 on midterm. Avoid him at any cost!!!!
Professor Hemmick made taking physics extremely easy. I had already failed PHY121 And was told to take this summer course because it was easier even though the level is higher. As someone who is absolutely terrible when it comes to science I was able to follow along. Pretty healthy curve at the end, got a 20% on first midterm and passed with B+.
Took him over the summer. He tends to say that class examples help with tests, but he doesn't even fully solve them in lecture. His lecture videos are often disorganized. So you better off learning yourself from youtube videos. His tests are difficult, and are impossible to complete in a given timeframe. Don't take this important course with him.
Looks cheery and fun but is very uptight and doesn't care much about you understanding. The course is very easy so he makes the grading very tough and makes it very difficult to do well if you don't follow everything he says or even have a slightly different understanding of the material. Not a helpful teacher at all.
I have to say, Hemmick, albeit being known as a good professor, has not shown himself to be as superb this semester. He scheduled one of our midterms on election week making it difficult to focus. He made his grading criteria very vague. Refused to curve any exams. And refused to let us use any open notes even though the exams weren't proctored.
Hemmick is very unorganized this semester. He does not fully go over any problems during the lecture or exam review videos. We basically had to teach ourselves as he only touch on basic staff during lecture or review. He does not allow us use any open notes or formula sheets during take-home exams.
Very good professor. I came in with strong knowledge because of AP Physics, so it was partially review, but the difficulty of questions was increased with some new topics as well. He covers the topics really well, and while he won't solve everything for you, he makes you understand what to do. Exams are often very similar to the "Problem Books."
He's awesome.
He's very sweet and wants you to succeed. He makes watching the (asynchronous) lectures equal in their weight to your grade as an entire exam. Physics is hard to handle in general, and he's not easy to reach for extra help, nor does he offer office hours, but ultimately he's on your side.
He's very sweet and wants you to succeed. He makes watching the (asynchronous) lectures equal in their weight to your grade as an entire exam. Physics is hard to handle in general, and he's not easy to reach for extra help, nor does he offer office hours, but there is the physics help center
Professor Hemmick is a great professor and the best physics teacher someone could ask for. He makes the class pretty straightforward and actually helps everyone learn and understand physics. Although asynchronous classes tend to get a little disorganized sometimes, his teaching makes up for it, and his grading is pretty lenient.
Horrible professor. I'm shocked that Hemmick is considered the "best" physics professor for introductory classes. Prerecorded lectures from three years ago, going off on unrelated tangents and not completely solving the problems. He lowered grades for students with "generous" TA's for the lab. I should have received an A based on the syllabus.
easy professor, exams basically just review questions but worded differently,
Take this man: he makes hard topics easy to understand. The problem-solving questions are very similar to the test questions. As long as you study problem-solving questions, do your homework every week, and complete the lectures/recitations, you will get an A in the course. HEMMICK IS GOATED!
Hemmick tries to summarize concepts, but sometimes his explanations are more confusing than helpful. HW problems are challenging and often unrelated to lecture. Often solves the easier problems in recitation and only partially solves the harder problems, leaving the rest to us to do. That said, the problem solving videos are extremely helpful.
Everyone loves Hemmick, but he posts lectures from 2018, does not answer his email ever, and teaches as if his students already have a basic understanding of physics. You cannot ask him questions and there are no TA office hours. Even my physics major friends could not understand some of the problems he gave us. The grading is violently curved, tho
Professor Hemmick is amazing. Watch his review videos and make sure you know how to do the problems. He sends out emails detailing what to expect on each of the exam questions. His tests have the ability to show you when you get an answer correct as you work through the problem. Multiple attempts on test questions! He wants you to succeed.
I took Classical Physics II as a summer course to hopefully be able to get my degree, since I never took Physics II at my actual University. I attempted to contact Hemmick throughout the entire course with questions on certain pieces of review material. I never received a single reply.
Watch the lectures in 2x speed and then do every problem in the midterm four hour reviews and you'll be guaranteed a good grade. The homework is confusing and doesn't really align with the problem solving book. But my average is really good so probably take him for PHY 131 over the other professors.
He teaches materials assuming everyone knows the basics but it's very hard for people without basic (prior) knowledge to follow what he is doing. He makes exams harder than practice problems but I think it should be the opposite. He screams in lectures making it harder to focus. He's very smart and I get it but I am not smart.I want more clarity.
TAKE THIS CLASS FOR PHYSICS! I suck at physics, but hemmicks makes this class easy. This class is an easy A. The homeworks are way harder than the exams. His lectures are entertaining and he explains concepts well. Study the review problems and you will do very well on the exams!
Couldn't understand his way of solving problems.Didn't understand the purpose of WebAssign homeworks when exams were all tricky.Had to study all on my own.The only thing he helped with was for me to google the topics on youtube to study.
There is not a better professor I can ask for than Professor Hemmick. He makes physics, a very tough topic, extremely easy. He gives 3-hour lectures and 1 hour recitation a week which is extremely doable during your off time. If you watch his 8-hour review sessions, you are almost guaranteed a 100 on his midterms. His final was extremely fair.
Cannot be accessed through email but his lectures and recitations are more than enough help. 3 Midterms and 1 final and if you do the practice questions you'll be okay.
1 of the easiest professor to take for Physics in summer. He doesn't give partial credit on exams but he is very lenient with grading distribution. He in fact give 3 attempts on online exams & let u replace final exam grades with 2 midterms if score higher. Although he doesn't have office hours he is very accessible in email & respond very quickly.
Just like for 131, he is the goat.
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE ONLINE Hemmick doesn't respond to emails, when he does, he doesn't give valuable information-only says to rewatch lectures. When emailed/asked to explain a problem, he simply doesn't. The homework is significantly more difficult/doesn't align with what is gone over in lectures. The actual physics is explained very poorly.
The lab write-ups were long and painful, the TAs cutting down points at every turn. The prof didn't respond to emails on time but respected any and all wishes for extensions, even for the exams. The homeworks were difficult but the exam questions were basic, easy, and given with 3 tries per box. His 8hr reviews prepared me well for the exams.
Amazing professor, highly recommend.
Online class is super easy, just watch the lectures. He does half the homework questions in the recordings. exams are online
This man is a god sent to Stony Brook. He is such a good person and has easy-to-understand methods for difficult topics. Please take him and you won't regret it.
One of the best professors in terms of grading leniency. You can get a relatively easy A or B as long as you do the homework. Exam grading is fair and he prepares you for everything. Unfortunately, I took it online so I do not have much to say about his teaching style. However, it does take a bit of time to do everything, from watching videos to HW
Watch the weekly lectures and join recitation, you will be fine. Especially before exams he posts 8 hours lecture recording. And the exam questions are similar to those review sessions question. Should be an easy A
Exams correspond to the 8hr review sessions. Topics are easy to understand with some basic calculus foundation. Lenient grading as well with 3 tries on all exam questions. Super easy to coast by, and get a B
If you have not already taken Physics his explanations could be confusing. He assumes you already know physics. He does not teach topics for the first time. Regardless, anyone can get an A. Most of the course is about learning how to solve problems. His recordings make it easy. However, I feel like I did not learn much Physics. This is a setback.
Great class.
Hemmick is my favorite professor at sbu. I had him online for Phy 131 and you would've never expected Physics to be that easy. I took Phy 132 in person and I loved it, overall fantastic professor. Carrying the Physics department and he is very straightforward. He will help you if you ask him.
Prof Hemmick was really chill. Its an asynchronous course, so know that his lectures are from 2018. (not joking.) The lectures are heavy. All the lectures and home-works are due Saturdays. Exams are on saturdays too. I definitely recommend because he tries his level best to make the lectures funny and interactive.
Hemmick is a great professor. I took PHY 131 online in the Fall of 2024, and the class was overall pretty straightforward. He has 8 hour review videos posted before every exam which does help. I think the lectures aren't all that helpful sometimes, but the concepts are relatively simple. Would recommend (especially over the other physics classes).
I took PHY131 and PHY132 over the summer and this class was really straightforward. I just put the lectures on 2x speed but the exams are basically questions from the problem solving book. Homeworks are chill and overall a good class to take
He makes lectures funny, even though it is online. Graded by very few things and exams are really straight forward.
goated professor. i hope someone saves all of his lecture videos even if he retires
He's very engaging in his lectures and explains the topics well. The lecture videos feel like they jump all over the place at times, but he posts review videos which are a great summary of the lectures and help you apply everything that is learned to prepare you for exams and understanding concepts. He makes a challenging course feel lighter.
His lectures are quite long but engaging, and he knows how to teach well, and he is incredibly hilarious. His homework can take some time, but they make sure you know your stuff. His tests are reasonable, and he even tells you the exact type of problems you can expect. If you want an A, take his class; you won't regret it. The goat.
He is the best physics professor! His course is really good and helpful, not bc it's easy but bc he explains really well. And since this course is online async, it helped me to manage my time more easily.
Is good ✔️.
