Good, interesting lectures, relatively easy to follow.
he's a wacky guy
Funny guy, fun class, keeps you interested, but he can be confusing at times.
Funny and knowledgable. Good at dealing with obnoxious philosophy students...
I think he really likes trees. He makes class interesting and makes us laugh.
Funny, Austrian?, Knowlegable, Not an Artist!, Great Overall Teacher
Strange, strange little man.
intelligent, kind man....but spacy and unbelievably frustrating

Interesting class, with a good approach. Funny.
tom rocks
Brutal. Makes little sense in class and a difficult to please marker.
Is anyone else from phil 261 disgusted at the exam mix-up...or am i all alone
Unorganized, but funny and interesting. Has his heart in the right place.
Uses horrible examples, text is hard to understand, class lacks proper debate
great guy, very enthusiastic.
Tom was a fabulous teacher! Very thorough in making sure concepts were clear, and kept lectures interesting.
As a math student, I took a chance by taking a philosophy course, but with Dr. Heyd learning about the philosophy of religion was fun and very interesting. He had great insights into the eastern religions and increased my understanding about them.
Very hard to interpret what he is saying. He thinks in German. The text is too complex for 1st year students who have never taken any philosophy before. Many students have trouble staying awake in class.
OMG! If you don't like Locke, then you're screwed. Gave a totally biased treatment of Berkeley THROUGH Locke (even though it's true that Berkeley ****s up on Locke a lot), so we missed-out. Also, spent way too much time on Locke. His lectures suck too.
he's a good guy and can be really funny in class!but his lectures can be very repetitive, and boring. Readings are really hard to understand as well.
it is imperative that thom be more interactive with the class, instead of just rambling on by himself. also, it's unfair to give participation marks, as the percentage that it has, as an impact on the final mark, is not even outlined in the syllabus.
Wow. Is this guy not the worst prof ever? Terribly unorganized and unclear. I'd rather get teeth pulled than take another one of his courses. Get another job buddy, teaching is just not for you!
Worst prof ever! Hasn't a clue what he's talking about (even admits it sometimes); is supposed to be a Locke scholar but doesn't have a clue (he reads his own interpretation in there). He doesn't accept different opinions from his own! Beware of the cup!
Brutal! If you can avoid his classes do so. The course material is challenging enough without having to keep asking to yourself "What the hell did he just say?" I'd rather go to the dentist, too!
Nice guy. I think he tried to let the class lead the discussions too much, so we didn't always get to the root issues. We read a lot of Kant. A T.A. marked our papers, which seems to often make for lower grades.
He knows his stuff; esp. RE the british empiricists and if asked a good question lights up like a jack-o-lantern, but the rest of the time appears to be falling asleep along with his students. Have a good question prepared or plan for an hour-long nap.
most unclear prof that I have ever had. the class is a mess. he gets on a tangent and stays there for 2 classes, and your readings are hardly ever covered in any difinitive way. if you need any kind of direction at all, skip his classes.
Oh my god, this was the worst course EVER! I'd rather have Langer! The material was OK, but Heyd cannot, I repeat, CANNOT teach!! Brutal, avoid at all cost.

Terrible, horrible, and all things bad. If you want to learn anything, STAY HOME AND READ YOUR TEXT. He can't teach this class. It's a waste of time. You'll be more confused coming out than you were going in, and he won't cover the article anyways.

wow, you are in the presence of a legend, not so much for what he say, but because this guy makes the best off the cuff funny comments ever, the german accent helps.. haha, understands some readings very well, and others, not so much, enjoys drawing funny pictures on the board, take his classes
Since I didn't realize I would be doing philosophy when I signed up for European Studies, there was a pretty slim chance of me liking the teacher (I hate philosophy). Having prevously taken 2 other philosophy courses, however, he was definitely the worst of the 3 teachers. It was hard to stay awake.
During class he at times made it interesting, knew the philosophers and went off on countless tangents, but when it came down to the midterm he was a brutal marker and didn't give you any helpful feedback on the assignments beforehand so you knew if you weren't getting it.
Think mad scientist dr. seuss euro goofiness. Funny in-class examples. No feedback on assignments. Garbled lectures. Great material though and fun discussions. Do the proposed activities outside class for max value. Quirky, maybe manic-depressive, but otherwise enthusiastic. Not a great communicator. Not an easy 'A' course. Overall worthwhile.
Seems like a nice enough guy, but I have never walked in to a class so excited to learn only to leave that same class hating a subject. Philosophy readings can be confusing enough, but instead of helping his students understand he makes you more confused. Plus his idea of getting students involved is to talk to your neighbour for 15 minutes...
Idiot. Should not be allowed to teach. Worst teacher ever.
Nice person, and tried honestly to help, he just cannot teach!! Typical academic who really knows his stuff but just can't get it out of his head and into yours.
Nice guy and pretty funny at times but he is still an awful prof. He obviously knows his stuff but he can't present it in a way that students can grasp. He wastes A LOT of time talking about irrelevant things and you are better off doing the readings and not going to class as the tests come directly from the readings and you will do much better.
I was utterly shocked to find myself chastised before the entire class by Heyd for explaining a philosophical term using an analogy to capitalism. I dont care if he's borderline communist, but to beat his hippie drum so loud as to drown out his student's ideas is beligerently reckless and irresponsible - this man should be fired. SHAME ON YOU HEYD!
Great enthusiasm, clear, engaging. I learnt a lot in this class.
The way that he words his questions is impossible to understand and when he does notes on the board its basically just a bunch of cirlcing and underlining... i'm not a big fan
Heyd thinks that Kant is the God of philosophy and brooks no debate regarding the superiority of Kant. If you're looking for a course that involves critical thinking in any form, get another professor. Heyd uses this class to force his views on students, and frequently engages in logical fallacies when trying to argue with dissenting students.
More a sophist than a philosopher. Emphasises what he likes (We spent more classes on Kant than on any two other philosophers combined). Exams formatted to place further emphasis on his beliefs. Glosses over any attempts to disagree with him, and seems passionate about specific ideas rather than philosophy itself.
If I knew then what I know now, I would not take the class. He seems nice, but Dr. Heyd;s lectures are very unclear (no prep apparently), he chooses readings that only state one side of arguments, and he shuts down students who then ask questions about them and who don't agree with him. Don't take it. Enough said.
Dr, Heyd has a clear idea of the way he wants you to respond to questions but fails to share it. For Phil. 333 40% of the grade was a group project (including a group essay) which is ridiculous, especially for an upper level philosophy class. I will never take another class with him.
Doesn't understand that philosophy is about rational speculation... Shuts down any student with an alternate view.
Very nice guy, accommodates students with difficulties, responds to e-mails with very detailed and thoughtful responses. However, course weighting strange (high percent for group project and exams but many assignments + attendance + Mandatory classes/fieldtrips worth only 5%). Course way harder than expected for 200 lvl. VERY boring course.
Heyd was nice enough, but it is true that he squashes any comments which differ from his views. This class was awful, the most boring, and painful lectures Ive ever slept thru. He's terrible at answering questions and unclear about expectations on tests and assignments. Definitely not taking another of his classes
I thought Thom was awesome! Super funny guy, reasonable with assignments, and tests were fair. Readings were hard for a first year course, and he can be unclear at times with lectures. Overall, awesome guy. Would definitely take a class with him again.
This was an awesome course. The prof was very encouraging to help us do the readings and was always available for feedback after hours. I would take another course from him any time.
Class discussion was always first rate. This was a great way to start with philosophy. He made the class fun. I liked how he made it possible for us to express our opinions and to connect ethics to our lives. I recommend this prof to all my friends.
This Prof was really helpful, he had an awesome grasp of art history and contemporary art, as well as philosophy of art. Taking this course really helped me with my other philosophy courses. I was able to use his tips in art history as well. Neat guy.
In this course Heyd made a huge effort at getting students involved in class discussion. This worked really well as he always tried to give a balanced view. He covered stuff that I had always hoped to discuss. If you studied it was easy to pass. I recommend this class (I even brought my girl friend to show her how much fun it was.)
Neat guy, always encouraging to enter class discussion, open to new ideas. Guides discussion gently so that it stays philosophical. You do have to work the material, but it pays off. Highly recommended.
This prof makes you work hard but it is worth it. It is a really great experience. I can only recommend this course.
Interesting and entertaining professor. Will clarify concepts well and as long as you go and do the little assignments you will know the material very well.
Dr. Heyd did not provide clarity or feedback on assignments. Students learned quickly that he did not like opposite points of view. This did not encourage class discussions. He required a group essay, which did not benefit the students, but he had fewer papers to mark. Small group discussions were a waste of time. Not an effective teacher.
Great prof, explained everything very well, and allowed for class discussion. I can only recommend him.
The most helpful prof I have had, always ready to engage a diversity of opinions and to give feedback on work. I can only recommend him and this course.
Very helpful, leads discussions, lets people speak. Tests are fair.
Heyd helped us work in groups, the learning experience was democratic, the readings hit the mark, always engaging, a cool prof. I hope to take another course from him soon.
What I liked about this prof is that he was very approachable and has an easygoing style. I recommend this course to anyone. Especially cool is the section on animals, abortion, and sex.
Cool prof, always raises challenging questions and allows for a lot of discussion in class
I really enjoyed this course. Tom raised many hot topics in class, and was always available for consultation. Good class!
This guy is very engaged in the material even if it is a bit dull at times. Let him know that your thinking about things and you will do well on assignments/tests.
Very fun but definitely a little scatterbrained. Do your own research and don't rely on class to get the topic. Encourages class discussions that can get a little out of hand.
Awesome Prof. Don't pay any attention to the comment about being scattered. He was crystal clear but expected you to do your readings. I really learnt a lot in this course!
The course Introduction to Ancient Philosophy surprisingly was a lot of fun. Heyd really knows how to get your head wrapped around those first philosophers. you cannot lose taking this as a first course in philosophy
What a fab prof and course. Reading the ancient philosophers was like reading a mystery novel. All along Heyd encouraged us to think for our selves through the arguments and to stay critical but appreciative. I recommend him very much.
I took this course out of interest, looking for an intro to ethics but in real life. This course gave me much more than I had expected. The professor was awesome, always full of energy, he made reading the material easy. very enjoyable.
A great course, makes Ancient Philosophy come to life. Thom encourages discussion in class, explains very clearly, grades fairly. Best course I have taken so far.
The teacher was awesome, he really made this a *philosophy* course, asking us to question our beliefs and even the textbook claims. I recommend him highly.
The teacher is super. I hope to take more classes from him.
tom made this class really enjoyable, we had to do our readings alright, but it paid off. i would take another course from him if I could. cool class.
Lazy, arrogant, unprofessional, deals in broad generalizations, ignores the text, loves going on useless tangents, condescending towards students, only wants to hear catch-words, puts little effort into grading, requires name tags because he cannot be bothered to remember names, often demeans students when refuting them, etc etc etc. NEVER AGAIN!!!
He conducts in-class discussion by getting you to talk to your neighbor for 15-20 mins (which is a good 1/3 of the class!). No feedback on assignments. Requests nametags; super annoying. Yes, I think he opposes any views against his own, and will often interrupt dissenting students. Would not recommend.
Spends the entire lecture asking questions which he never answers, then on tests when you give your answers he marks what was in the readings as wrong and what was your own deductions as wrong.
Awesome prof.
Thomas is an acquired taste; He continuously asks questions instead of laying down a foundation first for each philosopher he covers. He never truly answers his own questions or other students and beats around the bush with explanations, then leaves you hanging, questioning what is right and wrong and what you could write on his tests to please him
Best prof all year
Definitely can go on a few tangents, and if you're the kind of person who really needs answers for every question, you might get frustrated (but keep in mind, this is philosophy...!). He just leads you on your own journey towards learning, and is INCREDIBLY helpful and kind. Lots of opportunity to focus on what interests you!
Heyd is by far one of the easiest professors you will ever have at the university level but DO NOT expect an A. He rarely gives them out but expect a high B and nothing more. Do the weekly assignments and the midterm and after that the final is take home. Super easy and I would recommend this course to all business students pre-core
Heyd's strength is undoubtedly his creative approach. He can reveal connections between concepts you'd never have thought could be connected. However, this very strength can be his weakness, as it leads to disorganized lectures where he ends up rushing to catch up for time lost on digressions (oft initiated by random student comments). Recommended
Philosopher teaching an ethics course, so a bit flaky as you might expect. That said, an interesting, well-spoken guy with a good grasp of his subject. Lectures basically "show up and group chat." The insistence using checkmarks and comments on assignments instead of hard marks is infuriating. Overall, though, good pick.
extremely helpful. makes you reflect on your own views. good readings.
Lots of online readings. Lectures were quite boring, and were primarily on Western Europe and antiquity, not Eastern Europe. More of a random course on variable topics, rather than talking about the history of the cultures and their relation to modern day. Disappointing prof, hopefully better with someone else. Im still getting EUS minor though.
awesome prof. helps you think about how business life can be meaningful and ethical. gives out lecture notes. always helpful and available. I recommend him highly to anyone who would like to be in commerce and do the right thing
brings Ancient philosophy and world alive. even has a field trip, and lots of chance to meet classmates. great readings
Professor Heyd is fine. Just make sure you did the readings and weekly assignments. In class you will just talk to your classmates about the readings. The content and readings are quite easy and interesting. Can be a bit wooly, but still a nice course.
Would avoid at all costs. Completely disorganized and got progressively worse throughout the semester. Won't record marks on coursespaces and can't provide you with a clear grade. Criteria for group projects is vague and he will assign marks based on however he's feeling (and then can't justify them). Get ready to sit in a circle for daily groups.
It doesn't take a lot to get a good mark, but you need to be basically publishing a paper to get an A. I took notes before the midterm (hardest part of the class) but he posts his notes so after I stopped. Show up and reiterate the material to him in your project, midterm and final and you'll get a B easy.
DO NOT TAKE HIS COURSES!!! He is completely disorganized and vague and this gets progressively worse as the semester goes on. His lectures make no sense and he can not teach whatsoever. He grades on how he feels and can not justify his grading when questioned on it. His assignments are also extremely vague and unclear. Worst Prof I've had!
Unbelievably flaky. No clear marking rubric, you will never know why you have nearly failed an exam. The markable material is fine to get through if you just regurgitate what he says in class. We have been a week or two behind in terms of material covered, and it makes doing group projects more stressful. This class made me hate philosophy.
Ive take some of heyds classes before and loved them, but this one wasnt at all enjoyable. First of all it took weeks of months to get any corrections on assignments if you ever got corrections back. There was a pretty large group project that ended up only being work 10% and the final was worth 40% and its been 20 days and still no final grade
Really enjoyed his enthusiasm in all of the lectures and the readings. Content was very interesting and class discussions were mediated well. Grading criteria was somewhat vague, but if you put in an average amount of work and attend class you will succeed! Would definitely recommend for an interesting elective.
Entertaining lecturer. He can be funny, and knows how to involve the class in a discussion. The class was well paced as well. Small group project. Small weekly homework involving readings. Two tests. Overall one of the easier classes I've taken.
Professor Heyd was very accommodating and well spoken. He was very accessible for questions and addressed what was unclear. His readings were very interesting and added a lot to the course. I thoroughly enjoyed his class and would definitely recommend it to others!
Thom seems friendly in some contexts but is a surprisingly hard marker. Often contradicting himself and harshly grading tests even when answers were pulled from the horse's mouth and directly from his notes. He is very scattered so if you can go with another prof to get this required course out of the way I would. Has a good sense of humour though
Enthusiastic lecturer and always smiling. Is obviously passionate about what he teaches and helps students find ways to deepen their learning with emails about philosophy events on campus and in town. Slides are good study material because they include everything that he covers in class, but show up because he takes attendance.
This is a great course looking at Philosophy and the Environment, blending Environmental Studies and Philosophy. Weekly assignments force you to do the readings, which in my opinion helped a lot. Group assignment was a great learning experience, applying course material to a relevant location in Victoria and presenting. Would take Heyd again.
Takes clear notes on everything he says in lectures, study those notes and learn the arguments he presents, and you'll be just fine for the exams and group projects. He's a very funny and approachable professor. I just wish the group project didn't go on as long as it did, but other people in my course liked the group project component.
If ancient philosophy is your jam, you might enjoy this course. Notes are detailed, it's not a homework heavy course. There were weekly assignments based on readings, and an intensive group project for homework. However, prepare to be interrupted by Heyd during discussions + during your own presentations. Tough marker but with vague criteria.
