Teaches way to fast. Too smart for his own good. I have no idea what happened in class. Ever.
Can not comprehend anything he says. He assumes we already know everything but he is a smart guy just not very good at communicating what he knows.
He seems like he knows what he is talking about and he is very funny, but he isn't a very good teacher. He teaches way too fast and expects us to know everything already. His favorite thing to say is "I'm sure this is too easy for you."
Just like the others have said, he's a super smart guy. And I'm sure he's a nice person, but he's an absolutely terrible teacher. He doesn't know how to explain things. I'm fairly sure he spends half the class saying, "This is easy, right" or "You probably already know how to do this" Avoid taking his class if at all possible!
Awful teacher, does not know how to talk. Get's way too technical and brings in concepts from other chapters that complicate work. Puts up lots of work and almost never shows you how to do it. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
Hickman is a very smart guy but does not know how to teach. He assumes that everyone knows the answers to his questions and goes way to fast for everyone. whenever he says, "do it my way, because its easier" just ignore him (you will get the question wrong on the exam by doing it his way). He's smart but just can't get his ideas through to you
He is a very smart man, but he is an awful teacher. He uses his organic chemistry material to explain basic concepts of chemistry which makes the material much more confusing. He asks questions in class but does not explain how he does it, and he does not tell you the correct answers. Never explains anything and boring. Stay away from Dickman.
He is amazing and is awesome and I love him
Hickman's quizzes were often very hard, but don't effect your grade much. I found it helpful to stop by his office hours a couple of times to get extra help. You should definitely go to SI if you didn't understand during class. Don't let yourself fall behind and you'll be okay.
This class was absolutely awful!! Do not take his class!! He puts all his powerpoints online and just reads from the slides. He states like ten times a class that we should already know the material! NO that's why i took this class. He doesn't teach, and then he expects you to know EVERYTHING for the exam! Do not take him! It will kill your GPA!
The worst science teacher i have ever had do not take him he has no place teaching. he ends every sentece with "This is easy, you should already know this, and you should be able to just look at this and know the answer." are you serious no i dont know it from high school thats why im in the class nver heard one nice thing about him.
He never explains any of the material that are on the slides. He just says "This stuff is too easy right?". You should not take him if its possible because you won't learn anything from him and your GPA will drop.
Is Dr. Hickman hard, Yes! But if he sees that you care he will help you as much as he can. Go to his office hours, he will be a great help!
Yes, his class is hard, but this is college. He moves fast and assumes you can keep up. But he is also human, if you explain you are behind he does EVERYTHING he can to help you succeed. He also has a great sense of humor when you get to know him, so GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS, this is the BEST way to make a good grade in his class!!!
Dr. Hickman is wonderful! He seems to know what he is talking about, and I love how he tries to apply the different concepts of chemistry into the different majors that we are in. I was able to visit his office hours several times, and that was a great resource in preparing for exams. He is also a very fair/nice grader, and gives partial credit.
Yes, he does say "this is probably too easy for you guys" but the previous reviewers obviously have no sense of humor because he's joking. As long as you pay attention in class, he prepares you SUPER well for the exams. Anyone who gave him a negative review obviously never went to his office hours either, because they're helpful. GREAT TEACHER!!!!
Extremely hard for a survey class. I dropped CHEM 223 because of the hardness and he basically teach the same way if not harder. Extremely boring. Talks on and on and on with a dull tone. TAKE SOMEONE ELSE FOR SURVEY!
Dr. Hickman teaches by writing on a chalkboard while explaining topics, which can be really boring or confusing at times. He gives random quizzes in class as well that may/may not help with the topics that are being taught. His tests are okay but I would definitely read the book. I would not take him again for another class however.
The material is hard, but he tries his best to make it simple for ya. Tests are killer because if you mess up the same thing over and over you fail. He's sassy and occasionally condescending but I think it's funny. Looks at us and says "Yeah, you guys look like you're either lost or about to cry" and then re-explains. Very helpful office hours.
Dr. Hickman is definitely one of kind. He's super funny... in a weird way, but class is always enjoyable. As long as you show up and show him that you're trying, he'll answer questions and help you out. He doesn't assign a lot of homework but he does spring quite a few pop quizzes (they're group quizzes) so just be sure to always show up.
Dr. Hickman is probably the best instructor that I've had at clemson. The lessons and material are tough, but he tries his best to make it easy and simple. You'll find him dumbing things down in an attempt to let everyone understand. He does a great job preparing his students for the tests, so pay attention. He is also hilarious in his own way!
How the heck did I get a B? Organic Chem is a tough subject. Dr. Hickman is a very smart, funny man; but do not depend on just learning from lectures. I didn't open my book very often, but it helped towards the end. YouTube videos saved my life (especially Khan Academy). I recommend visiting him for office hours. Help him help you.
I would not recommend Hickman for this class. He is not clear, he writes all his notes on a chalkboard, and he is very cynical. The only good thing was that all of his tests are curved... a lot. Re work all the quizzes multiple times and memorize the practice tests and you will be golden.
Gets off topic quite often. Dumbs the subject matter increasingly as he realizes people aren't getting it. He curves the tests like A LOT. Not the best lectures because he uses a whiteboard in an auditorium. Easy group pop quizzes. Get the David Klein textbook instead of the one he recommends (He doesn't go by the book but it's there for you).
He drops one of your three test grades. The first two tests are usually curved or he lets you correct them for half-credit. He tries to make his lectures interesting and mostly writes notes on the board so he's easy to follow.
He is the easiest of the CHEM 1010 teachers. His quizzes are easy and the class lectures were easy to understand. He is pretty funny, but he can be a little condescending.
As someone who isn't a chemistry major, I'm so glad I had Dr. Hickman. His quizzes and homework assignments are 100's so long as you turn them in, which was an awesome grade-booster. Tests weren't terrible because test corrections were given for 50% credit. Teaches from chalkboard, so he's easy to follow. He's very helpful in office hours, too.
He is one of the worst teachers I have ever had and he is a very mean and rude person. He thinks we should know all the information he teaches already but the point of the class is for him to teach us. Would never recommend to anyone.
I absolutely love Dr. Hickman! He is really great at teaching chemistry and always open to a few questions after class. Classes are not mandatory but gives a "pop quiz" every friday just to make sure you're coming to class. He gets you very ready for the tests. I love him so much, im taking him next semester as well!
I liked professor Hickman. He's kind of condescending some times, but overall he's a good teacher. He uses a chalkboard to lecture, which I liked. Any time i've gone to him with questions he's been very nice and helpful. He's pretty hilarious if you understand his jokes, and he gives pop quizzes.. every Friday. Study a lot, tests are manageable.
I would not recommend taking this class, he makes the material so confusing by just throwing stuff on the board and not explaining you. He is condescending and expects you to already know half of the material. He will help you in his office hours but he still is condescending. He makes sure people ended up with the grade they needed.
He's a decent professor, but only uses chalk when lecturing.
Hickman does an especially good job of teaching the material for the common exam. Going to class and paying attention will prepare you for the exam very well. He helped me to easily make an A and I am taking him again this semester. The homework is easy and all of the quizzes are group quizzes. Great professor who cares about his students!
This class is tough because the Chem. department makes it tough. Hickman does his best to teach the material but is slightly better when it comes to Chem. 101. He can be a little confusing when writing notes on the board. However, the quizzes and homework in his class really can help your grade. Overall, I would recommend him.
Hickman is a good professor. He loves to say things like "blow up" and "pluck." He can be a little condescending but get to know him before you judge him. If you want him to like you, suck up. It's pretty simple. But he's a good guy. He writes out his main points in sentences, which I like. He also gives "pop" quizzes, but you can work together.
Organic chemistry, even the survey course, is difficult. His lectures were sometimes confusing, but he was helpful in office hours. If you're struggling, just start going by once a week. He will help you, and basically go through the lecture again or the homework if it was assigned that day. I would take him again.
He teaches from a chalkboard, which I liked for organic because he allowed me to see the mechanisms clearly so I could understand the reactions better. I would probably say he is one of the easier organic professors, even though that doesn't mean it's easy. His exams aren't too bad. He is funny and I enjoyed him as a professor overall. Id recommend
Love him! Always willing to answer questions and be as helpful as possible. Really funny.
He is very interesting and I great professor. He explains things very well and includes great anecdotes.
If you have extended time you should you should schedule to take with the testing center. Does not respect giving the proper amount of extended time even though he is obligated to. When confronted by email with both me and advisors he did not even bother to reply to some of them. Not friendly in person as well as rude if he explains multiple times.
Worse teacher and he's the only teacher for this class. He just expects you to know it. Be prepared to learn most of this stuff on your own because you won't understand his teaching style. There isn't much to learn and it is easy stuff but you do learn it mostly by yourself. There are random quizzes but they are group quizzes and few homework assg
I think Dr. Hickman is awesome. He uses the chalkboard so it's easy to take notes with him. He tries to prepare you for the exam by giving you past exam problems while he's lecturing. Though, he doesn't announce when your homework is due. In fact he rarely mentions you have homework. So be sure to check sapling after each class.
Honestly such a good guy. He is super understanding and willing to work with your schedule.
Hickman was hands down the best gen chem professor Clemson has. He cares about his students and wants to make the personal connections to help you learn the material. The class and material is hard, but Hickman takes his time to make sure that everyone understands. If you don't understand something his office hours always help.
Good professor. Teaches what you need to know and not much more. Teaches from a chalk board which is nice because he can't go too fast. He does tend to have a habit of glossing over stuff, but he'll eventually come back around to it. Probably one of the best CH 1010 professors, our section has pretty high grades.
Loved him, class was hard, but he is a real gem.
TAKE HIM! He is the best chem professor I've ever taken. Hilarious, would often go on random entertaining tangents. But also gives good notes that help you pass his straightforward tests. Super accessible outside of class at office hours and he's always willing to help, especially if you frequented his office like I did.
I love Hickman. He doesn't use powerpoints, so be prepared to write/type notes because he uses chalkboard. He always talks about his prison friends which is a nice break from lecture from time to time. What i love about him the most is that he puts up videos of him explaining topics and solving questions on practice worksheets!
This professor was one of the best professors I've ever had. He made the material easy to understand and actually cares about his students. Also, his stories can turn any bad day into a good one. TAKE HIM!!!!
I love Dr Hickman! I had him for both Chem 1010 & 1020. He is very funny and has large availability outside of class. He really cares about your success and will give you as much help as you need if you go to his office regularly. He does give a lot of quizzes but they are mostly for attendance and some of them are group quizzes.
Dr. Hickman is VERY good at explaining chemistry and wants you to do well. He hand writes lecture so its easy to keep up and he tells great stories and managed to keep my attention in an 8 am lecture - I really enjoyed the class, and learned a ton from him. Definitely take him if youre able to!
Dr. Hickman's amazing. He is so good at breaking things down and it's easy to follow his process in class. He writes the notes on the board as you do, so it's easy to keep up, but make sure to write everything he writes. He is hilarious and definitely keeps you awake during early classes. He wants you to do well and gives you what you need to do so
Dr. Hickman is a really nice guy. He's accessible outside of class and is eager to help students. BUT he's awful in lecture. He jumps into topics without giving context and skips steps during calculations, leaving you confused as hell. He's funny though so I guess that's good.
Hickman is the BEST! If you have the choice, take him for 1060. He is very laidback and realizes that no one who is in the class actually needs to learn the material for their major so he makes it as easy as possible. The tests are easy and so are the in-class quizzes because you can work together. Also, he loves serial killers and its amazing lol
Prof. Hickman is the best! Definitely go to class - he gives you in-class quizzes that are open notes & collaborative. Also he always tells a fun story in class. Go to his office hours if you need help! He is always willing to help & genuinely wants you to succeed. I would without a doubt take his class again!
Class is not mandatory, but he will give out take home quizzes in class that are due next class. He makes it very easy to skip classes, almost too easy. You can't miss the quizzes because they end up counting toward a large part of your grade. Also, you have no idea what your class grade is until finals week. Go to every class, and you're fine.
Dr. Thomas Hickman is a phenomenal Professor. He covers the topics well and his lectures coincide with his textbook. Attendance Is not mandatory but I recommend you attend to insure your success in the class. He is very helpful outside of class and always available during office hours. I would recommend and take his class again.
This man is amazing for an 8am class. I suggest going to his office hours, the man is funny!!!
Great lecturer, he writes on a blackboard, so it's easy to keep up when taking notes. He takes his time going through the material, is very thorough, and even provides supplementary material on canvas. He does give in-class quizzes; however, he drops your two lowest quiz grades. Definitely an easy A -- don't let people scare you.
Hickman is hilarious and a very good professor. Very clear, willing to help if needed, gives pop quizzes, so come to class. Pop quizzes are take-home or done as a group in class. Be sure to do online hw, go to class, and do quizzes to get an easy A
Dr. Hickman is the best professor I have had at Clemson. He is extremely helpful and hilarious. I am taking him for Chem 1020 next semester because I wouldn't want anyone else to teach me chemistry. If you have the opportunity definitely take Dr. Hickman!!!
By far the best chem teacher here. Attendance isn't mandatory, but you probably want to go if you don't want to spend time teaching yourself. Online homework is due at the end of the semester with unlimited attempts. Some quizzes but rarely graded for accuracy and one or two are dropped. I chose him for chem 1020 too. Study old tests for the final
I took my Gen Chem at a USC branch my senior year of highschool and took this class as a first semester freshman and I was pretty scared. He teaches this class very well and I had very little trouble in it. He cares. Even though he never took attendance I still woke up for his 8AM & he'd have us rolling on the ground we'd laugh so hard some days.
Gives funny stories in class, take home quizzes are easy to do at PAL/with online help/in groups, lowkey a stoner
Professor Hickman is an awesome chemistry professor. He knows his stuff, is approachable, and gives every chance to succeed. A few things to note: he does have some slightly bizarre personal anecdotes, he does give random take-home quizzes often, and trust me, you DO NOT want to miss a class (he's fast-paced). Overall though, a great professor.
Best professor Ive had so far. He makes everything understandable, even for idiots like me. Be sure to ask him about his death row letters, you will not be disappointed
He teaches to the tests and makes it extremely simple by putting everything on a blackboard. His quizzes target the hardest material that will be on the test, and he puts practice tests on canvas. Responds quickly with good explanations to any questions over email. I hated high school chem, but this guy was my favorite professor this year.
Hickman is absolutely amazing. He gives 12 take home quizzes throughout the semester and grades on completion not accuracy. He also drops 2 so you only need to do ten. His lectures are amazing as well. They are fast paced and easy to absorb. I highly recommend him
Hickman is a great professor for OChem I. I am signed up to take him again for OChem II. He takes his time to explain things in lectures & he makes you want to go to class. He is very understanding. He passes out paper quizzes in class that are not hard. There are also canvas quizzes due before exams. He wants his students to succeed.
I had Hickman for Chem 1 & 2, and I would definitely recommend. His lectures teach exactly what you need to know for the exam and he gives you all of the study materials that you need to do well. The exams are relatively hard, but you can do well if you study. He gives take-home quizzes once a week and the homework is due at the end of each unit.
Honestly the best intro chem professor you can get- super chill and laid back but INCREDIBLY knowledgable. Tells weird stories ab serial killers whenever he feels attention drifting and prepares you so well for all of the exams. I always felt 80% more prepared than my friends with other profs. If you have a choice- take him!!
Took the online summer course and the class had a clear structure with lots of homework that was graded by completion, a few quizzes and 4 tests in total. There was enough resources between just those things to help me get an A.
A solid chem 1010 professor. Went on rants about serial killers but that always kept class interesting. Really knows his content, and always did a good job of explaining things.
I thought he was a really great professor, especially for a chemistry class! Dr. Hickman took the time to make sure you understood the topics and gave more than enough extra work to prepare for the exams. Although my class was through Zoom, I think that going to the lectures still helped me because he took the time to answer everyone's questions.
I took professor hickman online and I feel he would have been way better in person. His videos are very boring and not very descriptive. The tests were on specific facts and not the majority of things we went over. I eventually stopped going to his zooms because he was always at least a lesson ahead of us.
This man cannot teach in an online setting, so if you want to take Hickman, be prepared to teach yourself everything. If you go to his test reviews, even if you ask good questions he will not have an answer for you. His lectures are vague, and he only teaches the shortcuts not actually how to understand the material. I wouldn't take hickman's class
Professor Hickman was a great professor he took time to help his students understand any concept they were struggling with. He also has attendance optional but you learn so much in class that are not on the recorded lectures that it is really helpful to do both especially if you want an A.
Dr. Hickman was all around awesome. This class was taken during COVID so it was all online. He posted his lectures so you could work at your own pace but also had multiple weekly zoom sessions for Q&A and further explanation. Sometimes his lectures could get boring but were overall informative. He gave plenty of practice that was super helpful.
Professor Hickman was awesome when it came to talking to him, but he spoke way over my head all semester. It was completely online because of Covid. So his lecture were posted then you could go to zoom for QA's. I never thought the zooms were helpful and they actually confused me more. Nice professor, though.
Dr. Hickman is an awesome professor who truly cares about his students. Learning chemistry online isn't necessarily fun, but he made it tolerable and always made sure we were prepared for exams.
Hickman is a great prof that really cares about the subject and his students. His lectures are a little slow but he's very thorough. He gives weekly quizzes but gives you the questions beforehand so you have all week to work on them and get answers. The material is hard but if you have questions he's very helpful and keeps going till you understand
His class was a nightmare. Everyone in the class struggled with this lecture. He posts videos of every chapter and I am telling you the proton guru videos did nothing! Very hard class to study for. Do not recommend taking his class.
Do not take him if he is teaching online classes. Only one of the test averages were passing, the other two were a low D and a high F. I suspect people are cheating like crazy as theres always someone making a perfect score for every test, including the final. I believe his tests were the hardest, as the final was much easier than the tests.
This class was the worst experience I've ever had. The class averages for the exams ranged from low Ds to Fs (59). They do not curve at all. The first exam was the only exam that had a passing grade. The class was also not structured at all, and their was no clear way on how to prepare for exams effectively. Please, please, don't take this Professo
Dr. Hickman is a great choice for Organic. I took this class during the summer, so it was very fast-paced, but the course was set up in a way that made it manageable. Take advantage of his office hours, they are very helpful. He is always quick to answer questions over email. Orgo is tough, but Hickman makes it doable if you put in the work.
Dr. Hickman is one of the most well respected professors in the chemistry department if not at Clemson University. His Orgo 1 class is a breeze if you go to class, get the Organic Chemistry as a Second Language book, and don't cheat yourself on quizzes and practice problems. The exams are high stakes but if you have discipline you will earn an A.
One of my favorite professors at Clemson so far. Although the material is difficult, he usually does a good job of teaching it and is a very funny guy. He loves to tell stories in class, and also has all of his old recorded lectures posted online if you missed class or need to hear something again. Doesn't require a textbook, just online homework.
He goes slow enough in class and offers many opportunities to ask questions. He also posts all of his recorded lectures so that you can review them. He provides lots of helpful materials for practice (review problems, old exams, online homework). He is very funny and tells stories throughout class.
Hickman is my favorite professor. He is so funny and tells stories to bring attention back. He makes chemistry interesting even early in the morning. Our average for exams is usually higher than other sections and there is very little homework. Just an online system that are due before the test on that chapter. I would recommend him 1000/10.
Hickman is the best professor the only reason why his rating is low is because he teaches Chemistry which is a hard subject in itself. He does everything in his ability to make the class easier on students. He is HILARIOUS. There are quizzes every week but they are easy and he gives a lot of the answers in class if you pay attention.
Dr. Hickman is the best professor I've had at Clemson, thus far. His lectures are very informative, and he just wants all his students to succeed. He posts his lectures from the COVID semester online, and also provides many other resources in order for students to master the material. He also is a really funny guy, and is just overall a happy guy.
Dr. Hickman is probably my favorite teacher that I have right now. He teaches very well and makes sure people in the class get the content and will answer questions about either the lecture or homework right after class. He also is full of hilarious and insane stories that I would gladly listen to outside of class for entertainment.
Dr. Hickman has very entertaining lectures with crazy stories to help give your brain a break. It is important to know he uses the chalkboard but, his lectures still get all the concepts across is ways you can understand. He also posts the guided notes online and the weekly quiz online so you can work on it the whole week before it is actually due.
He is so funny and a real gem in the chemistry department. The lectures can get a little confusing, but he has lecture videos and you can use those to catch up or review some material. His classes consistently score higher than others. Tests are pretty easy if you study in advance, hard if not. Note: he tends to complain about politics and masks.
Prof. Hickmans lectures are instructional, but he recognizes when were all dead first thing and the morning and spices them up with funny stories about his home life. Quizzes are open book and usually very helpful for studying for exams. Overall a great professor for a somewhat difficult class.
Literally such an easy class. Just watch his videos and do practice tests and yall get an A.
Hickman uses the chalkboard to work out examples and explain concepts, unlike many other chem profs who read of a powerpoint. Highly recommend, he makes the material easy to understand by providing tips & tricks. The same test is given to ALL chem students, which were pretty easy if you do the practice tests Hickman provides. Need online hw code.
Prof. Hickman was one of my favorite professors this semester, despite taking his class at 8 am. His lectures are well structured with guided notes with optional videos that you can watch at home. He also includes various personal stories throughout that were always bizarre and made my mornings a little more bearable.
class was very difficult and there is no extra credit provided
Makes chemistry so simple.
Dr. Hickman is my favorite chemistry professor. He prepared us well for the exams, and he always would do problems from other exams as practice during lectures. The one downside is he will talk about serial killers during class, so be wary about that. Chemistry is a tough subject, but Dr. Hickman tries his absolute best to prepare you for the exam.
I really enjoyed Hickman as a professor. He taught the information well and is very funny. Would highly recommend taking him for Chem 1 and hoping to get him for other chem classes in the future.
Dr. Hickman is prob the best chem professor at Clem. The class is not easy and he knows that but he tries to give you every resource he can in order for you to do well. He cares about his students and our success. He is also super funny, his mid lecture stories are always hilarious and makes the class tolerable.
Hickman is definitely a character at Clemson. He is hands down the best professor for Chem 1010 and makes the lectures bearable. He will randomly ask if weve heard about his serial killer or meth lab stories so be prepared because they are wild. Overall a very good, down to earth professor who makes chemistry 10x more enjoyable.
The course material is difficult, but he tries to teach things in a simplified manner. It can make things difficult on tests since some other professors prefer to be more complex on questions, but you have access to previous exams to get familiar with the formatting. If you've got friends in other sections, it can help a lot too.
He certainly makes lectures interesting. I didn't quite like him as a person, but it didn't bother me so much because he was a great teacher. His course is super organized, he posts lecture videos from the past, and gives guided notes. Quizzes are also easy because they are open notes and he gives the questions out beforehand.
best chem prof at clemson
Lectures were a little disorganized and smart works is unhelpful and hard but Professor Hickman overall knows what he's talking about and like the material, he will try to scare you with test percentages and isn't ver helpful at answering questions during a lecture, but if you go ask him after class he will help.
Great professor. Probably one of the best orgo professors at Clemson. He likes to tell stories during class, but overall he explains the concepts very well.
If you put in the work for this class and do practice problems, you will succeed! However, if you wait until the day before the test to study, that would be a mistake. The quizzes are so helpful with explaining the content, and this is my favorite class that I've ever taken at Clemson. Hickman is nice and funny, take him!
Professor Hickman was great. He tells a lot of funny stories and was very entertaining. He does a good job of teaching major concepts in organic chemistry. You will have to do a lot of work outside of class, that is just how it is with organic chemistry.
Hickman is hilarious and is clear about the curriculum that will be on the exams. If you pace yourself and study the material covered after class it is VERY doable. He is also open for Zoom office hours which helps a lot with any questions on concepts you have. Do practice tests and make sure you know everything he covers. Not as bad as you think!
Dr. Hickman is an excellent lecturer. He writes everything on the board and works through lots of practice problems in class. If you go to class, work through the homework, and ask questions, you will do just fine in his class. Also, he is just a fun person who will leave you laughing on several occasions.
Hands down the best professor I have ever had. Took his organic 1 class at 8 am and he actually made me want to show up to class. He tells hilarious stories (sometimes it feels like a stand up comedy session during lectures), works through plenty of practice problems during class and writes everything out with you during lectures.
Took 2230 in Spr 22. The material in orgo is very hard but Hickman tries to break it down to the bare essentials and appeal to multiple learning styles. I recommend watching his lecture videos before class and then asking questions in class. Told very funny stories when time allowed. Dont take the 8am section, because you will never end up going
The best professor you'll ever have.
Hickman is an amazing professor for teaching such a difficult course. He provides tons of videos and resources if you need extra help learning concepts. He is always accessible outside of class. Half the time he is telling weird or funny stories, particularly about serial killers. He is by far one of the best chem professors at Clemson.
Dr. Hickman is by far the best professor I've had at Clemson. For such a tough course, he provides you with everything you need to get a high grade in the class. Gives a lot of quizzes, but they help grasp the content for the course. Highly recommend taking this professor for this course.
Dr. Hickman is the goat. If you can, take him. You will not regret it.
Love Dr. Hickman, great stories and really just teaches you what you need to know. He doesn't teach all the fluff of orgo, just gets straight to the point. Definitely take him.
For such a complex class, prof Hickman explains concepts simply and effectively. It helps to watch his lecture notes before hand and then get a better understanding in class. His "quizzes" walk you through everything you need to know and are extremely helpful. Such a funny guy and makes going to class worth it. Would take him again if I could.
Hickman is by far the best Organic Chem professor. You won't regret taking his class. It's definitely helpful to take his advice and read ahead in the textbooks he recommends. His lectures are as clear-cut as a Chemistry lecture can be. His quiz worksheets are also great practice. Just know that quizzes and exams are your only graded materials.
Hickman is a really nice guy, just know that he only teaches using chalk and a chalkboard. This class is just really hard and you'll have to put in a lot of work, but that's just how chem is. He had videos on Canvas with guided notes which were helpful if you can't see what he's writing with the chalk.
Dr. Hickman teaches on chalkboard only, but posts so many materials on canvas and amazing walkthrough problem videos that it makes up for it. He's very funny, so many stories about his wife and crime shows lol! No hw, and maybe 12 10 question quizzes throughout the semester were given. Orgo is hard, so study even though there's no hw graded.
Dr. Hickman is an amazing professor. He is very engaged during his lectures and answers any questions clearly. The course is somewhat quiz heavy however he gives plenty of time to prepare for them by giving paper versions well in advance. I would highly recommend Professor Hickman to anyone taking an organic chem class.
Loved this man. Made class enjoyable, even with it being difficult material. Would help you out if you needed whenever. Cares about his students and is hilarious during lecture. TAKE THIS MAN!
Awesome guy! Ask him about his serial killers.
Sure, its Survey, but just because he says he'll go easy on us doesn't mean it'll be easy. Hickman is the kind of teacher to write a problem on a board, stare at us for 5 seconds, then ask if we need any more practice problems. Hilarious stories, man has had the most eventful life and loves to talk about it, but not much to say about his teaching.
Organic just sucks. Hickman makes it bearable with his thorough explanations and insane stories. If you're gonna suffer through Orgo, take him.
This class had very few grades, with around 80% of the grade being composed of exams. There's no hw but there are weekly quizzes on lecture material. I personally didn't like his teaching style due to his lack of slides but did fine after finding my groove using outside resources. Overall, the class wasn't too bad.
Hickman is a great professor. The class itself is a hard class. He post lectures online. They are just as helpful as his in person lectures. He gives quizzes for every chapter that are very helpful and are a grade booster. Would not have passed the class with another professor!
He's really good at simplifying the material so that it's easy to grasp but still accurate, and he's very charismatic and funny in lecture. Listens to student feedback, too; on the first day of class he asked if we wanted to use the SmartWork system and when we said no, he took it upon himself to make paper homework assignments and grade them.
Hickman is hands down best professor I have had at Clemson! Orgo is hard but he is amazing at explaining the material and gives quizzes with so much explanation and he drops 3 at the end of the semester. His test averages and A rate speak for themselves. Lecture is hilarious and helpful. TAKE HIM!
IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A CHEM 2 PROFESSOR, TAKE DR. HICKMAN'S COURSE. He is probably the best professor in Clemson's chemistry department and genuinely cares for his students. I couldn't recommend him enough. Chemistry will always be a difficult subject, but Dr. Hickman made it easier to learn.
Dr. Hickman was a great professor for chem 2! He provides a good bit of material outside of lecture that help with studying, and he is really good at explaining difficult concepts. I cannot recommend him enough!
I liked Dr.Hickman. He taught organic chemistry in a nice, clear, concise way. Kinda if you read organic chemistry for dummies. He assigns quizzes that honestly helped more than lecture. He is accessible outside of class and I recommend going to his office hours. He is a professor that is nice to talk to and easy to get along with.
THE GOATMAN. I had Professor Hickman for Gen Chem 1, Orgo 1, and Orgo 2. Best chemistry professor at Clemson! He writes on the chalkboard during class, making it very easy to follow. Lectures are also available on Canvas. Lots of practice problems provided. I highly, highly recommend! I made an A in all 3 classes because of Hickman!
This is my second time taking a class taught by Dr. Hickman and I wish I could take him again for orgo II. Out of all the orgo professors at Clemson, he is by far the best. Lectures are fun to attend, he makes quizzes as easy as possible while still being helpful for learning, and he'll answer as many questions as you can throw at him. Take him!!
Dr. Hickman is the best chemistry professor I have had at Clemson! His teaching style is engaging, and he always tells the funniest stories. He lectures using the chalkboard and does not have slides. There is no Aktiv homework like the other professors, but there are weekly quizzes. I can tell that he wants us to perform well and actually learn.
Hickman is a great prof who makes Organic Chem bearable. His lectures are clear, and he posts helpful videos on Canvas. While the material is tough, his quizzes and stories make it enjoyable. Unstuck study was a lifesaver for studying.
I absolutely love Hickman he was the best professor I've ever had. He is incredibly caring and sweet he loves teaching. Take him.
Provides tons of practice material and pre-recorded videos on each topic. Super funny and caring in lectures but you don't have to go. Quizzes re-lecture the material and tell you how to do the problems. Take him if possible.
HICKMAN IS THE BEST!He has office hours almost daily and has lectures pre-recorded.He responds quickly to emails and is the best at simplifying orgo. Orgo is hard, but he just makes it very tolerable with his teaching and quizzes.I would take him over any other professor. He always had the highest averages on exams. Such a caring guy too. TAKE HIM!
THE BEST CHEM PROFESSOR. He goes through everything with his own understanding, so really good if you're the type of person who wants more of understanding pov than just the plain material. He did everything on a chalk board, which was super helpful for orgo. He gave great examples in class and made sure we understood what he taught before exams!
Hickman was a nice professor, and his quiz handouts were amazing, but the class still sucked because it's organic chemistry.
This is my goat. I've taken this class 3 times and the one I took with him finally woke me up and helped me understand the material. He answers every single question (and I mean every single question) anyone has during class, answers every question after class, and explains the material so well. Owe him everything. TAKE HIM FOR ORGO.
I've taken him for almost every chemistry class I've taken. He's super nice and wants to see his students do well. He also always has the highest exam averages, so I would definitely recommend. No textbooks, attendance is optional, and he has lecture recordings and extra practice posted on canvas.
Dr. Hickman was the best professor I have ever had. I had him for CH1020, CH2230, and CH2240 and was perfect in my eyes. He made chemistry not only easy but so enjoyable again for me. He knew exactly how to frame something so that you could learn it, even if it was a nonconventional way. I would recommend every STEM student take his class.
Professor Hickman is a great professor! I struggle with grasping Chemistry concepts at times, but Dr. Hickman explains topics super well. He provides lecture videos and an abundance of resources for practice. His quizzes provide additional conceptual explanations that are extremely helpful. I am taking him for Organic Chemistry, as well.
This guy is the most entertaining and hilarious professor I have ever had. Academically, he is outstanding. He is the only chalkboard Orgo professor, while others use PowerPoint, which is nice. He also describes the concepts clearly and loves questions. His stories are also amazing; there is never a dull moment with Hickman. Highly recommend.
Hickman is fabulous! Entertaining lectures and always willing to help outside of class. It's a tricky course, but the way he explains things usually makes sense. If lectures get confusing, he always posts topic videos, practice questions, and walkthrough quizzes on Canvas.
Just came across Hickman while I was rating my other professors, been a couple years since I took his class and I still think of it fondly. The material itself is really hard but I still wish I could just go sit in on his lectures, guy is hilarious. I got a B and took a different prof for orgo 2 and nearly failed. Take Hickman, you won't regret it
Hickman was a great professor! His lectures were thorough, and I really liked his quizzes, for they explained the class concepts in a different way that was sometimes easier to understand. I know it isn't his fault, but the exams were extremely unpredictable, and the mega final with chem 1 and 2 was a lot to study for and do well on.
Dr Hickman was fantastic. He gives quizzes that explain the material SO clearly. I didn't take advantage of these explainations and failed the first chem 2 exam, and then began to use his resources and ended with an A in the class. He posts so many practice problems on canvas and explains things in ways that students can clearly understand.
Dr. Hickman is the best organic chemistry professor you can find! Even though all classes share the same exams and grading scale, a great professor still makes a huge difference. Dr. Hickman is always there to help you when you struggle. I went from failing Genchem to an A in Orgo 2, I attribute that a lot to Dr. Hickman's teaching.
Dr. Hickman made chem 2 bearable. He is an extremely personable guy. Sit in the front few rows if you can- he knew me by name and was such a sweet, caring professor. He posts shortened versions of ALL lectures so it's easy to go back and review or watch if you missed class. TAKE HICKMAN FOR CHEM!
Dr. Hickman truly cares about his students while also being an excellent lecturer. He covers the material in a concise and organized manner which really helps with comprehension. The class is difficult because it is organic chemistry but he makes it as digestible as possible.
Very funny guy, but I feel like I didn't actually learn anything in his class. He honestly seems like he has given up on teaching. He reads off his note sheets, expects everyone to know most organic chemistry concepts already, and his anecdotes take up 30% of class time. The tests are quizzes are easy enough, but I'd rather have a real professor.
Best Organic Chemistry professor, I was in another section with a different professor who made me more confused, but Hickman really helped me understand the information. He is also funny and will get sidetracked with great stories. TAKE HIM over all the other professors.
Makes organic chemistry entertaining. His tangents are so funny. This is a class you must put a lot of work into to succeed, but his explanations and provided resources make that job easier. He has benefits over other professors like easier quizzes, four dropped quizzes, and an 89.0 is an A.
Mr. Hickman is good at teaching; however, he will make simple topics complex. Be prepared for him to be off topic for 15 minutes of class, then speed up his lectures. But overall, it is a tough class, and he does try his best to make everyone successful.
He teaches in a chalk and talk way, but also the quizzes he posts for you to complete are pdfs mixed problems and explanations. He has long office hours almost everyday, and you should show up all the time, that's where he's the most helpful. He's also just hilarious and encouraging and his stories make me die laughing, even at 8 am
Hands down, the best professor I've ever had. Protect this man at all costs. Made Chem 2, Orgo 1, and Orgo 2 bearable. Still go to his class occasionally and chat with him. He is genuinely so kind, caring, and extremely knowledgeable.
Hickman is a chalkboard professor, so he writes out all the notes as you go. I liked this because I felt like I could keep up with his teaching. He posts videos on canvas for literally every topic we were tested on. I really like how he got straight to the point in his lectures in person. He does go on a little story time at least once a class.
Hickman is hands down the best for organic. He teaches with chalk, so it makes it easy to keep up. The weekly quizzes are very detailed and provide additional explanations for class concepts. Before exams, he would go over commonly missed topics to help with exam prep. He is super caring and really down to earth. Definitely taking for organic 2!
Professor Hickman is kind of a nut but truly a great professor. I took him at 8am and missed some lectures, but it was okay because he posted good lecture videos online that can make up for missed classes. Lowest quiz grades get dropped and for exams 2, 3, and the final you're allowed to create a cheat sheet. Still a bit hard since it's chemistry.
Dr. Hickman is the best! Organic is a difficult class, but his teaching and quizzes make it easy to understand. His lectures are entertaining, and he encourages questions at all times. Highly recommend.
Very casual, approachable guy whose lectures were engaging and information-packed. Somehow we learned everything we needed to know in between all of his stories. Orgo is hard, there's no denying that, but his lectures and quizzes made the information a lot more digestible after you get over the initial learning curve.
