Very hot. Really knows his stuff. Very engaging in lecture. Grades easy. Class not difficult. Did switch required reading so I was stuck having bought books I didn't need- hold off to buy texts. Overall: high recommendation.
great professor, requires lots of reading, but he definitely knows his stuff.
VERY HOT. Excellent at maintaining focus in class and engaging you in material. Leads GREAT, INTERESTING, INTELLECTUALlY STIMULATING discussions. Makes class a fun challenge but not impossible to get through.
Very intelligent, amazingly hot, super class...he's one of those so hot and funny guys, that your not sure if he's gay or not because he dresses well and wears major designers. With that aside, Awesome class.
Awesome class. I learned so much. It's a lot of reading but the class discussions are all based on them and the class is very engaged in the lectures because they are discussions. Very deep material. Stimulates a lot of thought. Prof. knows material very well. and ps he's very nice to look at.
Classroom discussions are intellectually stimulating in a relaxed setting. Higgins allows for all viewpoints to be heard even if they are unpopular. He is a teacher that still has that spark to where you can tell he still loves what he does.
Professor Higgins (unfortunately his first name is not Henry) is a wonderful teacher. He is very excited by his subject and gets students involved. He doesn't show partisanship towards any political party or religion or anything, which i think is great.
Higgins is INSANELY intelligent, he has been all over the world, and has the memory of an elephant! He's willing to consider any viewpoint that may be brought up. Although there is a bit of reading and writing required, he's understanding in his grading. He's enthusiastic and makes an effort to engage his students in every lecture. And hey, even if you somehow manage to think the material is boring (nearly impossible)...ladies, you'll be entranced just by watching him talk and play with his GORGEOUS hair!!!
He's a great teacher. Interesting lectures. easy grading and damn fine lol. Take him you won't regret it

he is HOT. i have a huge crush on him. wow. what makes him a great professor is that he is a freakin genius. he knows his stuff and he makes the class very interesting. AWESOME PROFESSOR.

very interesting, very easy class
He's very much into his field and he knows his stuff. He can tend to ramble on certain subjects but other than that, it has been a very entertaining course. Be sure to take good notes.
Great prof, easy to understand and no exams
This class is sooooo boring! if you're not interested in philosophy do not take it. I was half asleep in his class most of the time. i found myself costantly looking at the time. His class sucked. he has a midterm, a paper, and a final. He makes up his final and midterm on the spot and he doesnt even use those questions on the test. I give him a f
Totally agree w/the person below me, we must have been in the same class. We had to read about 40pgs a night of boring phil stuff that made no sense, kicks you out if your five minutes late, mandatory atten, and has a paper thats worth 1/2 of your final grade. Class is totally worthless like worse than most GE classes and hes of no help I him an F.
Okay, so forget about what the other negative comments said. This teacher is amazing! He knows so much information about Phil. If you do the work and do the work well, you will do fine. Participate in class and ATTEND CLASS!! Ask ?s if you need to. Higgins is amazing!Do your work, it will be difficult, but well woth it by far! Pay attention too!

must do a lot of reading, cool guy, easy class, kinda boring subject
Awesome teacher. Very good class. He is super smart. cute too!!!
I did have any interest in philosophy going into this course. He really opened up my mind and made me think outside the box. Really good teacher and always interesting.
Doctor Higgins is an amazing professor. He does a great job at presenting the material and getting you to understand the topics. However, you must be interested in the topic to take the course. He does raise interest in the subject but if you aren't willing to do some reading and learn the material don't bother taking the class. One midterm, one fi
Great teacher, he enjoys the subject and very intelligent. His teaching style is loose, a lot of deep reading. Only 2 tests in the course and 1 report. This class makes you look at things differently and its a good thing. Morals and ethics what we really need more of.
I had professor Higgins about a year ago. He is very helpful. There is not that much hw, just the occasional reading and I think there was just a midterm and a final. If you have questions, he was willing to work with you to answer them. Good professor.
Professor Higgins makes this class interesting. It can be kind of dry material, but his passion for the subject makes you want to listen. I would say the only drawback is there aren't many opportunities for points; just a midterm, final, and attendance points. I'd definitely recommend him though, and he's not hard to look at.
He's a cool professor but his class gets very boring at times. High level reading and critical thinking to understand his lectures. Don't take this class if you don't want to write because you will be hit with a 14 page paper at the end of the semester. He's very fair though.
Cool teacher. a lot of reading. no tests. midterm and final are long papers. have to go to class to understand the material
Dr. Higgins does lecture a lot, but he tries to make it as simple as possible. Attendence isn't mandatory but I highly advise you go to every class if you really want a good grade. Good notes and reading are very much necessary and his midterm and final are short essay questions. Good class overall.
I had Higgins about a year ago. Very interesting class, made you think and question alot of things. As long as you attend class and take good notes you'll do good on the exam and final. I'd definitely take another class taught by him :D
An amazing professor who knows his subject well. He is passionate, really wants us to learn and understand the material, and is very concerned with how we can apply this to our lives. I highly reccomend him, just be prepared for a lot of class reading. Don't go to class if you don't read, he will cancel class if nobody read.
Overall, he's a good professor. His lectures can be hard to follow, and he gets very defensive of his opinions. But he's not a tough professor, and he's genuinely interested in making his students care, and that counts for a lot, especially with those outside the major.
His teaching methods are really helpful. Before going on, he makes sure we understand.
Funny guy, I took the class once a week we spent time talking and analyzing movies, fun class time flies by
My favorite class so far at Fresno State. Dr. Higgins is awesome! He is so passionate about Philosophy that it makes you actually enjoy what could potentially be a boring subject. Do the readings, go to class, take notes, and you will do great. Plus he is really nice to look at...
i LOVE THIS CLASS. HE BRINGS HIS STUDENTS IN AND WE HONESTLY UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING! II WOULD TAKE ALL THE CLASSES HE TEACH AT FRESNO STATE.
Take this class if your serious, very helpful and breaks things down, he will fail you no matter how "cool" you are with him
He is intelligent and funny. His lectures are very interesting and easily comprehensilble. He actually made philosophy very appealing and sexy... :)
Dr. Higgins definitely knows what he's talking about! The material's complex, but if you STUDY, you'll do great! He's extremely knowledgeable and wants his students to do well in class. However, he will NOT pass you if you don't prove to him that you know the material! He's always available to help you, so don't hesitate to ask for assistance! A++
This professor makes you read a lot. It's really a lot of work and then he is not very clear on his lectures. If you email him, he won't reply you back no matter what. If you go to his class five minutes late, he wont let you come in.His exams were long essays and bunch of hardcore philosophical definitions. He is smart but not cooperative at all.
Don't take upper division with him. Take lower division. I had him for Phil 2 and loved it, I got an A. For Phil 120, I disliked it and got a B. It's an exhausting amount of reading and the paper had to be 10-16 pages long. Dr. Higgins is awesome and hilarious, but stick to lower division.
Very difficult class. Didn't do so well on the tests, but did well otherwise. The more you participate in class discussion and show that you read the texts, the better your grade will be. I don't think I particularly deserved an A, but I read the assigned readings and participated in class a lot. It was an interesting class and made me think.
GREAT PROFESSOR! He is extremely knowledgable and the way that he makes philosophy approachable is worth attending for. He makes himself available and goes to great lengths to insure your understanding. You do have to read to get the grade. If you don't you will have nothing to contribute and won't learn anything.
He was a good teacher but i did not like his teaching style. He never returned any email and he is very strict. He has lot of rules for example he will not let you in his class if you are 5 minutes late. Some of his lectures were very annoying. I liked the subject a lot but he is not cooperative at all.
Funny guy, but he's too picky. His way of thinking was one-minded. Never really took what other people had to say seriously because you can tell he still believed what he thought was right. It was interesting, but wished he could have practiced what he preached a little more. You basically have to think EXACTLY like him to get an A in the class.
Easy class if you do the readings. Make sure you go to class because he does pass out a sign in sheet randomly ever certain amount of days. The tests are a little annoying because they're only 20 points. If you mess up a couple of questions, you have a bad grade. He has extra credit, so do it if you're feeling lost.
He was an OK professor. It seemed as though at times he was unsure of what he was lecturing on. His tests are CONFUSING (that is my biggest issue)and tricky!!! On an important note, you HAVE TO do the readings! Some of the questions to the exams come straight from the book verbatim. GOOD LUCK IN HIS CLASS. (P.S. I would never take him again)
Liked his lectures, attendance is not mandatory but if u didn't get the reading he explains it in class. And it helps that he's nice to look at :D
He is really picky with final projects. Talks super fast. DONT TAKE HIM. Really bad teacher.
This class was slightly difficult because the material isn't easy to understand but the prof makes sure the whole class knows and learns what he's talking about.Exams are not so hard unless u definitely don't understand the point of the lectures. PLUS HES SUPER NICE and has a great smile.
Dr. Higgins is seriously one of the best teachers ever. He makes the hard stuff easy to get. And he explains things with his personal stories. And they're usually super funny. He's a really cool guy. I definitely recommend taking him for any philosophy class!!!!
Doing your readings help a lot. It can be intense so he does help clarify in lecture. He's a really chill guy, good at teaching. His tests are very specific. He did 2 midterms and a final. 2 out of the 3 tests consisted of 2 essays each. He can be a bit hard on these if you're not thorough with your response. Overall he is very nice and helpful.
he's a really great person but has a horrible way of grading, he sets up the whole class on 100 point scale and only two midterms that are worth 20 points each, so basically your whole grade is depending on the final , oh and the final is super difficult due to the fact that he doesn't give enough time to turn it in and expects a perfect essay
Makes you think twice about your own ethics and morals. Very interesting class. Grades fairly. Just understand the concept
Amazing when it comes to lecturing. The hour your in his class, it feels like it goes by in minutes. But with amazing lecturers, comes dumb exams. His exams were difficult almost every time, not impossible, but difficult. The people that ace his exams, are usually ones that actually understand material, or have mastered BS.
Genuine good guy - he has a really nice heart. The class was very interesting and rather enlightening. Even non-philosophy majors will enjoy this class. The material is sometimes hard, but he goes over the concepts you need to know for the exams NUMEROUS times beforehand. I'm glad I met this guy, and you ought to visit him in office hours.
He is a pretty cool guy but his lectures can be a little boring if you don't read the material prior to class. Only 2 midterms, the final, and attendance. Not too difficult, but make sure you know what you're talking about when you right your response! An interesting course, nonetheless.
Such a good teacher. Fun lectures. Great positive attitude and very friendly. Also nice to look at. Just pay attention in class. Class is no mandatory but everything on test is lectured in class. Yes there is a lot of reading but so far I'm doing great and i never read the books. One of the best teacher I have ever had.
I loved Dr. Higgins class! He is a professor that knows his stuff. The class I took was a night class, but he made the hours go in minutes it felt like. There are two midterms and a final which he gives all the information you need to know if you attend his lectures(not mandatory). I would HIGHLY recommend taking his class. One of the best Ive had
He's a really cool professor; he covers interesting topics & has a very open mind. His grading is a little weird. There's only 2 midterms and the final; they're all short answer form. Know what you're talking about!!! Also, attendance is part of you're grade. Not too difficult of a class, I would definitely recommend Dr. H.
He's nice and teaches ok. Grade wise, there's only 2 exams n a final (all essays) all total up to 90 pts n the other 10 is attendance. He grades hard on the essays so make sure u know the stuff! A lot of the time u will watch films. Not much of philosophical concepts learned but was interesting. Oh n he wo t bump ur grade up if u get 69 to a C!
Dr. Higgins has such an open mind and he's open to any arguments a students brings up in class, to the point you can't tell what his religion is, or if he even has one. Great listener. But also a great teacher. You really need to put in a lot of hours during the week to deeply understand what he's talking about. An easy A if you dedicate yourself.
Great teacher and one of my favorite at Fresno State. Lectures are amazing and really works to help you understand the material.
Great teacher and lecturer. Really made me rethink what my ethic and morals were. But he is a tough grader! The final was an ethic long paper, and you could chose between 5 or 4 topics I believe. And best believe, there were not short papers at all. And additionally we were not provided with a grading rubric or any examples making it even harder.
I have very mixed feelings about this professor. He gives great lectures & unless you really understand philosophy, lectures are essential to pass (attendance counts for points) I took this class during intercession & we had 1 midterm (inclass testtake home essay), 1 final paper (12 pages long) He grades VERY hard, gives no rubric for grading,
really tough grader but he is a nice guy. you will have to read a lot for his class. he takes the class so serious. If you are not majoring in Philosophy don't take his class.
Honestly the coolest class I have taken at state so far. This class is super interesting. DO NOT FALL ASLEEP! Involves a lot of reading so use audiobooks. Read the material before class and do not fall behind.
Wasn't the most understanding and graded me differently then everyone else, didn't seem very fair and was harder on me then most.
DONT TAKE THIS CLASSS! He doesn't keep you upgraded on your grades then at the end gives you whatever he wants. He told us he does LSAT questions, so the test were hard! We had so much readings on philosophers that don't even matter, and it was confusing. Sucks when I was getting all A's in all my classes but failing this stupid GE class.
took this class during the summer intersession. absolutely loved the lectures. systematic in teaching and connects ideas well to real life issues.
Exams are pretty hard. Lots of reading; you have to read to pass and understand his class.... Very good and knowledge professor.. amazing at teaching. Very fair grading; work for your grade!
He is a great professor. If it would be possible, he would be my best friend. He's so good at teaching and he's really passionate when he speaks it's truly amazing. He's really funny and friendly and I am really disappointed that I couldn't fit his other class into my schedule for next semester but I will try to go on his class trips.
Amazing, caring, funny, smart, understanding, laid-back, and fair professor. You will become acquainted with many thinkers in his class.
Dr. Higgins gives very good lectures and you can tell he knows his stuff. He takes the class very seriously and is very specific about his lectures. He seems like a great professor and I'm excited to be taking his class. The material seems tough but it is an interesting topic. Super cute too, so that's a plus!
Thomas was an insanely inspirational professor. His knowledge of Philosophy and its surrounding concepts are unparalleled. I highly recommend you take a class with Dr. Higgins, any class. It is well worth your time, you get more than you pay for.
Such a great professor. His lectures are super interesting, but get ready for a lot of reading. Not a tough class but his tests are so make sure you study. He really taught me a lot about philosophy and surprisingly made me love it! (not just cause he's cute)
His lectures are interesting but don't seem like they are prepared ahead of time. He is passionate. The class lacked structure. The syllabus changed every chance it could. His essay prompts were written last minute and unclear/confusing. No notes or study guides. Nice guy, wouldn't recommend for someone who works best with structure.
Higgins is passionate and his lectures were very interesting, so I never missed class. Attendance is mandatory as he gives many random, easy quizzes on the readings (don't take class if you hate reading). His tests are tricky at times, but if you know your material and ask questions on review days, you'll do well in his class. DO the extra credit.
If you don't like reading, do not take him. There were a few problems with his teaching style: didn't follow the syllabus, hard to keep up writing notes, test were essay format, super hard grader. Overall, I think he makes the class much more difficult than it has to be, and he never answers any emails. I do not recommend taking him
I don't recommend taking this professor. Our class had a total of 4 assignments. The first four months of class our only grade was a 10-point quiz, which most people failed. The last month of class he assigned three essays, two 12-page essays and one 14-page essay. He barely gives any feedback and grades very tough. If you need an A, dont take him
Overall class is very enjoyable always has good lectures. If you do not like reading do not take the class, but even then the readings that we have to do are very interesting and you really learn something from them. Usually have a short 1-2 question quiz at the beginning of every class about the reading we had to do.
Does contracts. so if you want a C in the class you'll have to do X amount of work and thats the grade you get for the class. super easy class if you are doing a contract and you don't need to go to class when you are on a contract only need to meet once a month to turn in assignment.. very interesting and awesome professor.
Grades material really hard and there was a quiz every class period on the readings. You need to get all the books he lists on the syllabus. The class was interesting overall but would highly recommend to take it with a different professor instead.
Worst teacher I've ever taken the class lectures were so boring and repetitive. Get ready to read as you have a quiz on the reading everyday in beginning of class. Only has 4 assignments throughout whole semester and doesn't really prepare you for them.
Very cool guy who seems to care a lot about his students. I looked forward to his class every week, as it was always interesting to hear what he had to say. Lots of reading, 4 writing assignments, only test is the final. No real notes or powerpoints to keep track of, so pay attention when he's lecturing and writing on the board.
Absolutely loved this class!! There is a lot of reading but its all extremely interesting. Professor Higgins made lectures funny and interesting. I always loved going to this class; it helps that hes extremely handsome too.
Hardest professor I have taken. Do not take the class if you want an A. Professor grades very tough. I would recommend logging into Zoom classroom hours and going into office hours for paper help (it will be needed). No midterm, 1 final (paper), 4 learning modules. The learning modules are based on class lectures. Must attend class lectures!!
Dr. Higgins is one of the most amazing professors I've ever had. He makes learning fun and makes difficult concepts and ideas easy to understand. He is very kind and caring about his students. The curriculum in the class is very interesting and engaging. He uses unique ways to teach the material, but it is efficent and fun. Loved his class!
I contracted for this class and it consisted of 3 discussion journals (9-11 pgs), paper proposal, and one 12 page paper (if contracting for an A). The discussion journals weren't too bad just start early. The paper was difficult and he did not give feedback on the paper. Overall, an average class.
This teacher is not the greatest we have only four learning modules and you have to pay for material in order to finish any modules for credit. His feedback is terrible and doesn't clarify if you ask him. Altogether this class was horrible you read a lot and that doesn't even help with the assignments.
taking him online right now and we have done two modules that have consisted of reading and watching movies and writing essays on both. We have not done a test. The essays are a lot of work for 20 points . The essay has so many questions and little questions within it. He does give good feedback and cares.
So far we have done 4 modules all essays that have to do with watching a movie and reading. I went to all of his office hours and thats honestly the only reason I understood what he was asking for grading wise. He was willing to help me and edit my paper and give me another chance at a better grade. He expects a lot but he is an amazing professor
my o my did I absolutely regret taking this class. 5 modules, 20 points each and are all essays. If I had to describe what his class is like, it's like an advance English class that requires you to read and analyze the shiz out of movies. Tough grader. If you want a challenge, take this class. He tries his best to help you but you have to ASK him.
this class was hard, he is a super tough grader. He wants so much analysis for a short 2 page paper. One time I changed the spacing so it would turn a 3 pg to 2 pg, jus bc it was so hard getting so much content into two pages. I still got a C, even though i put so much into it. It is a lot of writing and watching weird movies
Higgin's is a tough grader but he will help you if you go to his optional zoom meetings! If you are not a good writer, this class will be a challenge for you. It's tough, but he is always there to help! 5 total essays, 20 points each. Offers extra credit and HELP. I never asked for help but his feedbacks when grading essay help me write better.
This is by far the worst professor I have ever had in my entire life. I took into account that professors have it just as hard as we do especially in this time but oh my god. I turned in my work on time and always went to class and never received any good grades. Save yourself time and do not take his class. he also does not respect busy schedules
If you are taking Phil 120, make sure you don't do what I did and slack on keeping up with the lectures. I personally did not attend the Zoom meetings but they were provided in a Google Drive folder. There are 4 3-page "learning modules" you will take and make sure you treat your audience as if it were your peers, explain everything you bring up.
I was reading a lot of the comments saying Professor Higgins is awful, but really if you ask him what he's looking for he's very fair. He does want deep analysis but if you attend optional zoom meetings he helps you. Also gives really good and in-depth feedback on each paper so you can fix it on the next. He also gives a lot of EC.
By far the most difficult class and toughest grading professor I have had at fresno state. He is a great, nice, and overall very caring professor but his assignments and lectures were just so confusing. He expects so much detail in every single learning module and even when you think you tried your absolute best, he would still fail you
Professor Higgins is a really tough but fair class. This class is not for those that want an easy A, however if you want an easy pass I would say this class is ok. If you attend class, and just do what you are supposed to do you can pass. Reading isn't 100% necessary if you pay attention in class as he explains what was in the readings.
This professor will force you to write papers about very questionable movies he likes and will grade you so harshly. This is a Philosophy Class and he is giving out Cs and Ds on every paper. Philosophy is supposed to make you think about harsh realities, but for Mr. Higgins? Its his way or the high way. Dont take his final, its not extra credit.
Mr. Higgins in a tough grader and expects you to understand every topic. He reads every paper and grades then as if its an advanced writing class. The class consist of 4 papers that are 3-4 pages long and if he does offer EC? Itll be another paper due at the same time of the main paper. Expect to watch movies and write about certain theories.
Philosophy's supposed to be broad and accepting of others' views on specific topics, yet this class did not allow for personal input. Instead, the papers that were expected to be written must include specific ideas from other philosophers, incorporating it with his chosen movies. Even if you explained and defined everything, it's tough getting a B.
If you are looking for a class in which you can participate freely and have thought-provoking discussions--think again. Higgins is a nice enough person; however, he teaches in an extremely typical "oh yeah, he's definitely a philosophy teacher" manner. Flowery language, almost to a point in which it's annoying to listen to. Class is done in 30 min
Had to read 6 books and other stuff throughout the semester. There was a paper it felt like every other week.
Great philosophy teacher and left his lecture every morning contemplating my existence on this earth.
Provides all readings and films possible for the course, though the films were mostly (if not all) rated R so a heads up about that. Went to him for help to understand an assignment and instead, he just expected me to understand on my own since it "was my job to figure it out". Had a horrible experience with this teacher in general.
Lots of movies assigned. Prof Higgins clearly loves philosophy and his lectures reflect his passion. I am never bored, and he often ends class early. He left thorough feedback on papers in the form of audio messages. However he wasnt great at engaging the room, so the class felt a little dead and there were plenty of awkward silences.
pretty easy class, only four assignments 25 points each, if you go to his review zooms he gives a lot of input about the assignments, basically you just watch movies and relate it to philosophies
Professor Higgins is a great lecturer BUT, if you think this is a easy A class, then maybe reconsider. I really had to work for my grade. He gives no homework, literally your grades comes from the 4 essays we have to write which he grades critically on. If you go to the optional zoom sessions, it definitely helps so take advantage of that.
Tough grader but his lectures are amazing! Pay attention and go to the zoom review sessions... Ask questions, read, and watch the content he tells you to watch and you will be fine. Make sure you do your best on the papers. Overall this is not an easy A class. Work hard, have an open mind and enjoy the process of learning in Philosophy 120.
His classes were very interesting and he is very welcoming to questions. He explains everything very well and there is no bias in his lectures. I would recommend this professor and would take this class or a future class of his again. The information was interesting and how he presented it was interesting as well. Great professor.
This class was not an easy A. He was nice and is passionate about philosophy but man he's a tough grader. The final grade was based on 4 papers but the criteria of the papers were always unclear and challenging. He didn't say what he was looking for so it was tough to write them and if they weren't up to his standards forget about a good grade.
only 4 assignments out of 25 points, give options and some give extra credit points, attendance not mandatory but does do in class quizzes about assigned readings that you can't make up and doesn't give heads up, he grades a bit tough but leaves good feedback. As long as you try and do good you'll be fine, but wouldn't take professor again
He is a very tough grader, but he will tell you the prompt is easy. The few assignments were very different from what was taught in class, and his lecture slides strayed away from the essay prompts. He often discussed his political and religious beliefs in a class meant for "morals and conflicts pertaining to novels, films, and dramas."
Professor Higgins' PHIL120 class is challenging but rewarding. Tough grader, but engaging lectures and helpful feedback. Utilize the review sessions and Unstuck study to ace the essays. Not an easy A, but worth the effort.
I loved Dr. Higgins' course! His lectures were always interesting and if you paid attention and did the reading his few assignments were fairly easy to get through. Some readings were difficult, but he always helped clarify things during class. What I learned in PHIL120 will stay with me forever. If you can, take it!
