His tests are fill in the blank, but are kinda hard. He doesn't use the book, you only have his notes to study by which makes it hard because there is no second reference. The class is very long and boring. However, he is very thorough and holds review sessions.
Tests can be hard if you don't study his notes. He puts all of his notes online, just memorize them. Also, he is very helpful if you ask him questions and is very understanding.
He is a great professor. I was lost in the beginning and asked for help. He helped me every week. He really cares about his students. This kind of teacher is absolutely hard to find. Take him. His notes are posted online, memorize them. If he gives you problems to work out, practice them. They will be on the test. Do HW!! Replaces 60% of Worst Test
very helpful professor!
Excellent teacher! Engaging lectures, straightforward about grading and attendance policies, gives challenging exams, but offers help to no end, and he earnestly wishes to see his students succeed. He also treats them like responsible adults, and not high school students (i.e., if you don't show up for class, it's to your detriment).
Really interesting teacher. Makes pretty much any topic accessible and easy to understand. Difficult tests, but certainly fair. If you study a ton, you can make an A. One of the most worthwhile/interesting classes I have taken in my 3 yrs here.

At first, he seemed a little uptight, but as the semester went on, he opened up a lot. He really is a good guy. He wants his students to learn. He can get a little exasperated with answering questions sometimes, but answers them anyway. 80-100 is an A, so it wasn't too difficult to get an A. He was very clear in his lectures.
He lectures very quickly. Keeps you in class a minute or two after it should be over. He is not too keen on answering questions. Tests are definitely hard and you'll need to take lots of good notes and study for them well. Biology is not my forte and I should not have taken it in the first place, but he's willing to help if you ask for it.
Had Hilbish back in 04. Hilbish rocks on so many levels, both in his teaching of biology and academic activities outside of class. Great prof, smart guy, hard class but it was supposed to be.
Class can be boring at times, but he is a good professor, all test questions come from notes, and he drops half the lowest test grade, tests are not extrememly hard, just study for them...good overall professor
80 and above is an A, so that makes it a lot better. He doesn't take attendance, so I didn't go very much. As long as you can get a copy of the notes, you should be fine. Second test was a lot harder than it should have been. And the exam isn't cumulative.
He's the House (TV show) of Biology professors. Really sarcastic, but he was funny. First day I thought he'd be a jerk, but from the extremely limited amount of classes I went to, he seemed to be a good teacher. He says "you will die" often, in reference to the essentials of life. The class wasn't hard, I'd recommend him.
Hilbish makes his tests extremely difficult and tricky on purpose. I wrote down literally EVERY WORD this guy said in class and I still did terrible in this class. I read the notes religiously and it never helped. If his tests were as clear as his lectures then this would be a good class. Instead his tests were awful and hard to finish in time.
The last reviewer was exactly right, Hilbish's tests were pretty bad. All of his questions were about these scenarios that you had to analyze. Simply studying your notes will not help. I felt clueless going into his tests because you never what he could ask you. The subject matter is not difficult, he just made it difficult with his tests.
Really funny, interesting lecturer. Tests are difficult, but manageable with studying and he gives curves and extra credits. Really good to talk to, and if you have a question on any kind of biology theory level, he's the guy to go to.
Does not know how to talk to people
Smart man, hard class. You will have to study with the man to understand his test. I LOVED biology until this class. He would be so much better if he taught in a level where people new to biology could understand it. If you understand him, then you are either a genius or you have repeated this class
worst class at USC. He announced to the class at its beginning that it was his first time teaching an intro level, but apparently he has not curved the information. Tests are IMPOSSIBLE! If you are a graduating senior especially, do not take this! All notes written and classes attended, amounted to nothing on exam days. someone needs to stop him.
Hilbish's class is impossible to do well in. He straight up said that he'd never taught 110 before, and he used information from 101 and 102 instead, and those classes are much harder than 110. Don't bother taking notes in class, they won't help. Exams are far too difficult and test you on information not gone over in class. I hate Bio for this.
Hilbish was a very difficult teacher. His tests do not include questions about information taught in class, and he goes off on morbid tangents much too often. I should have made a much better grade in Bio, but he pretty much ruined that for me.
Hilbish is a cool guy. He teaches with straight up fast lectures and tells it like it is. His tests are hard, but you have to apply what you learn to different situations. An 85 is an A so it is definitely possible to get one. He doesn't take an BS but he will give extra help if you need it. Review sessions for exams were useless.
Hilbish knows what he is talking about and gives fairly interesting lectures. His tests are extremely difficult, but he is very helpful in providing a study session himself the day before tests. He is also willing to give students who meet with him study tips and advice for his tests. Be ready to try hard!
Dr. Hilbish is awesome. He makes jokes in class to keep even plant biology interesting. And he knows his stuff and can communicate it well to the class. Plus he publishes his grading scale and curve ahead of time so you know how you are doing. I took notes and would study an hour or two for each exam and got an A.
Hilbish is great. He makes the class interesting with sarcastic jokes. As long as you have good attendance you should be okay- he does not test from the book at all. Make sure to take VERY detailed notes though and understand concepts. He uses a lot of test questions where you have to apply your knowledge to situations he doesn't lecture on.
I think Hilbish is pretty cool. His lectures make sense and are actually intersting. He gives examples for every concept introduced, which is really helpful. Tests are straight from the notes, so take good ones! The tests aren't easy, but do-able.
Hilbish is a great professor. I enjoyed his class. He gives 4 exams and some homework assignments. The exams are short answer but as long as you study you should pull an A or B. There are no tricky questions. He is also very accessible outside of class and will help you with the homework assignments. I definitely recommend him.
Hilbish is a good lecturer and makes the class interesting with lots of examples. Tests come straight from the lecture and the study guide, and you should always make at least a B if you try. He is helpful and invested in the class. I would definitely recommend him.
I think Dr. Hilbish is fantastic! Really interesting lectures with exciting supporting evidence. Funny guy. In the end, he let us retake any of the first 3 exams with the final, so you can improve later on. Gives a weekly homework assignment, but they're interesting, easy and add up to being half a test grade.
Very good lecturer, very enthusiastic about the subject. Clear on class/exam expectations. His exams aren't easy, but they aren't overly difficult either. With a decent amount of effort most people should be able to pull of a B, and he typically has a curve he informs you about the first class. Overall he gets two thumbs up.
Teaches very well.Exams are not easy, but if you study with the intention of actually understanding the material as opposed to memorizing facts, it will not be difficult. It is not extremely hard to get an A.
His lectures are sometimes interesting. If you don't understand something in class and go to his office hours, he will basically reteach it to you. That being said, the tests are pretty hard. They are all free response.
Dr. Hilbish made the topic interesting, I had 0 interest prior to the class and only took it because it was required. 4 tests and homework assignments make the grade. Homework assignments are graded easily. Tests are harder with short answer questions that require analysis and application of lecture material rather than just spitting back facts.
The man is a legend. A wildly intelligent yet down to earth professor who is incredibly helpful and interesting. Would take any class offered by him no questions asked.
Hilbish is somewhat monotone, but he explains everything very clearly. If you want to do well on the tests, you'll have to study and possibly review things in the textbook. Overall, Hilbish is a good teacher. I learned a lot.
He's a great lecturer. Keeps even the most boring parts of the class (like plant anatomy) interesting. Tests are hard but his grading scale reflects that. 82 and above is considered an A. 4 tests including the non-cumulative final all weighted equally. Textbook is useful to look at diagrams but tests based on lectures
Hilbish was a great professor. He makes his lectures really interesting and knows that his class is hard, so he pre-adjusts the grading scale so that an 82 is an A. Attendance not required, but all tests are based on lectures so skipping isn't a good idea. Only grades were 4 equally weighted tests. Really interesting guy!!!
Dr. Hilbish was extremely helpful and his lectures were interesting. He's a bit awkward, but enjoys talking with students. If you ask questions and talk with him a bit, he is more than willing to help you succeed.
He's cynical, sarcastic, and makes lectures interesting even at 8:30 am. I HATED biology, until this class! Be prepared for major note-taking though; so go to class everyday otherwise you really are missing out. He cares about concepts rather than strict memorization, so pay attention to everything! Awesome guy, fast-paced, extremely helpful .
I love Dr Hilbish! You definitely have to attend class and take good notes in order to do well on the tests, but he is very helpful and a great teacher
Dr. HIlbish was really great about getting you the info you need to know. His lectures are focused and clear. I always felt prepared for exams, especially after is pre-test study sessions. Go to class and take notes and you will be fine.
GREAT professor! Tests based solely on his lectures and he only sometimes used powerpt. I recorded them to make sure I could listen back. He loves this subject and makes lectures very interesting. He loves it if you go to office hrs and is very helpful. Likes to get coffee with students. Mc tests make you think but are not hard if you study.
This class has probably been my favorite thus far in college. Dr. Hilbish makes the information really interesting, and tests are straight from the lectures. If you are trying to decide between taking this or a non-honors version, TAKE THIS CLASS. It's not super hard, and you will enjoy it.
Amazing professor. He loves what he teaches and if you visit him at his office he'll love you even more. Do NOT buy a book for his class, he doesnt use them. All tests are over lecture notes only.
Dr. Hilbish is thoroughly fantastic. He makes ecology interesting, and makes it seem easy and intuitive. Very approachable. -Go to lecture: that's what the test is on. -Don't buy a book. -Tests are open-ended, but fair. -Lots of "aha" moments. You will feel like you learned something.
Hilbish is great at explaining concepts and his exams are based strictly off of lectures. You have to be at every class to make sure you get his notes. Make sure to see him about how he recommends studying. It is time intensive but you'll be thankful for it when you get your grade. Very funny and willing to work with you outside of class.
Really not too bad if you put in the work, 4 tests are the only grades, theyre hard but you should be fine if you go to class and study, mostly application based, need to show up to class to get the notes and understand material, no hw, only 4 nights of studying total, lectures are boring but u might get to see him slam the door and break a clock
Dr. Hilbish's class is pretty different from any other course I've taken so far. His lectures are just him talking and occasionally drawing diagrams on the board, no power points. His exams have a lot of applied or abstract questions. It's pretty tough to study for them, but if you can figure out how his exams work it gets a little easier.
Hardest class I've ever taken hands down, I felt like I knew all of the material and but when it came test time his abstract and vague hypothetical questions made no sense to me.. his grading scale is different but it's still impossible to make an A. wish i took someone else because the honors cred wasnt worth it. also he smashed 2 clocks
Dr. Hilbish is a great professor for BIOL 301. He is very knowledgeable on all the topics in class and gives good examples that connect main ideas. He held out of class review sessions before exams where he would go over past questions from exams, which would often overlap to the current test. He cares about the students learning and is great.
Dr. Hilbish is a great professor! He really cares that you understand the concepts rather than rely on memorization. The class isn't easy, but if you take the time to study and ask questions, youll be fine. He does a great job making himself available outside of class for help too. I really enjoyed his class and feel like I learned a lot!
Dr. Hilbish is a very engaging professor. He makes the class really interesting and really wants to see you do well. If you attend class and study, you can definitely earn an A.
Difficult but manageable. Lectures are interesting but can be hard to keep up with at times. Study a lot and youll be fine!
This was a difficult class, there is a lot of content and the exams are his own formulated questions. If you do poorly on the first exam, go to his office hours! He is super accommodating and will make sure you master the content. Record his lectures to go back and listen since he talks pretty fast. Exams are all his lectures, so no textbook needed
Dr. Hilbish's Honors 102 course was absurdly hard, however I learned more from his class than any other course. If you're looking to save your sought after 4.0, then I would not recommend taking this course. Although an A is very attainable, his tests are insanely hard. He uses hypothetical scenario questions that check your knowledge thoroughly.
Read these reviews, thought it would be a good idea to take the class honors. Nope. Mainly based on him talking with few diagrams drawn on the board because he loves the sound of his own voice. Clearly thinks he is the smartest man alive and spent class time discussing how Jesus is not real. Studied extensively and still got bad grades.
Professor Hilbish is a very good lecturer. You have to be a good notetaker in this class because he doesn't always have PowerPoints for each bit of content we go over. Your entire grade in this class is based on four exams, with the lowest exam grade being worth half the weight of the other three. All of his exams are 50 multiple choice questions.
BIO102H w/ Prof. Hilbish was great. I learned a lot! The material is difficult but Dr. Hilbish was always willing to meet with students outside of class to help them understand and learn. An A is attainable (you need an 82). Show up to class and take great notes because exams are all lecture based. Go to his zoom reviews. Be prepared to work.
This class was challenging, but it set me up for success for the rest of my bio courses. Hilbish taught for deep understanding, not memorization, so much so that I still remember most of the concepts he taught 3 years later. I find my other bio courses so much easier now because I am already familiar with a lot of the topics. Truly the best prof
Lecture-based exams, so taking notes is a MUST, but there are also outlines available for each section, just aren't as thorough as points he makes in class. Very respectable & respectful. Responds to emails quickly & very helpful for any questions you may have. Example exams & help sessions are given/held prior to all exams. Few hw assignments.
Dr. Hilbish is extremely knowledgeable about what he teaches and it come through in his lectures. He has a dry sense of humor but is very accessible and wants to see his students succeed. He makes study guides for the few tests we have, and they are VERY helpful so definitely use them.
This is a difficult class but if you take good notes, go to office hours when needed, and go to the review sessions, it's possible. 4 exams, final wasn't cumulative. This is not an easy A but he genuinely wants you to learn the information and is reasonable with his final grades if he knows you put in effort to the class. Textbook was useful ish.
Great professor. He really cares about his students' grades but will never care more than you do. He will set aside lots of time to do one-on-one sessions with you if you go to him. I would highly recommend recording his lectures, all of his exams are really lecture-based and he doesn't use the book at all so don't even bother reading it.
I have never received a grade lower than a 95 in a science class and I had to drop bc I was going to fail. Only way to learn is go to class, listen and take very careful notes while he's talking fast and record lectures and listen again. there is no book, no notes and no outside resources besides him. only grades are exams. WAY too hard for bio 102
I absolutely loved dr. Hilbish. This wasn't just a normal bio class where you memorize terms and spit them back out. He wants you to deeply understand concepts. He doesn't use powerpoints so be ready to take lots of notes. He's very kind and even took me to lunch once to talk over things I didn't understand. Great professor!
Always keeps lectures interesting and engaging. There are no assignments, grade is completely based on 4 tests (non-cumulative). This class is not easy, but if you take good notes, you will learn a lot. I recommend recording the lectures and listening to them again. While this is time consuming, it is hard to get a good grade otherwise.
All of your grades are four (non-cumulative) tests. They are not the worst since they are all multiple choice. However, there is a lot of information in each exam cause he talks so incredibly fast. Record the lectures and listen again while filling in more details to your notes because you WILL miss things the first time.
Hilbish is the best biology professor I have ever taken. His lectures are concept heavy so you have to take good notes. He is very knowledgeable in the field and you will learn a lot. There are 4 exams which are multiple choice, but you have to take good notes and STUDY.
Lectures were packed with information which made the class a struggle to stay awake in at 8:30, but his course outlines were clear enough to get by. There are a few homework assignments where you had to read research papers, but most of your grade is made up by 4 tests. For all tests he had review sessions and example tests, making them easy. 10/10
I'd take a bullet for this man. His lectures are kind of boring, but his course outlines are very helpful. Show up to class bc a lot of his charts are on the exam. He is so nice and passionate about what he does.
He is very passionate about what he teaches, makes it more manageable to sit through lectures. Doesn't always have slides he follows along with so you have to write/type what you hear. Beneficial to record lecture and go back and rewrite notes. Mainly conceptual exam questions so make sure you know all the topics and examples. Get ahead early.
I loved professor Hilbish. He doesn't take attendance but you should go to class to take notes during lecture. Even though he posts the power points, they're mostly just pictures and not good for studying. We had 4 tests including the final, which wasn't cumulative. Very little homework and good to boost your grade. Take him!
Professor Hiblish has amazing lectures and is so knowledgeable about the topic. It was a joy to be able to learn from him. That being said, tests in the honors version of this class are all free response and are quite difficult. However, they are not cumulative, and he really does try to grade in your favor whenever possible.
Do not take this professor if you are lazy. I loved him and I thought the class was amazing, but it is impossible to make an A without full comprehension of the material. The exams are about recalling facts and application of knowledge.
This is a fairly difficult course. Each class is lecture from start to end, DEFINITELY record his lectures and re-listen to study. There are 3 exams and a final (not cumulative), and the exam questions are based solely on his lecture. The material can be hard so make sure to study really hard for each exam and do not skip class!
His lectures go really quick and are packed with info, so make sure to record them and re-listen later. The whole grade is 4 non-cumulative tests, with the lowest score being half the weight of the others. He's a very genuine guy, very willing to help outside of class if you ask. His exams are difficult because it's application, not reciting facts.
the GOAT. His lectures are fantastic, he's a great guy to talk to, and the tests are fairly straight forward. Would recommend!
Professor Hilbish is friendly, passionate about teaching, and wants to see all of his students succeed . Going to office hours and asking questions helps . His lectures are detailed so pay attention. The exams aren't hard but cover everything he discussed. I recorded the lectures and listened to them before the exam. To get an A, know the details.
Dr. Hilbish is very knowledgable & passionate about the material, however his lectures can be dense & boring. He has a dry sense of humor. Honors exams are completely written response, so having good notes is important. He provides note outlines but they're brief & lack details. He truly wants you to succeed, & will do his part to make that happen.
Great professor and very resourceful. Willing to help and re-explain material. Not many homework assignments and overall grade is primarily based on exam scores.
Dr. Hilbish is a really awesome professor, but the entirety of his class is based upon 4 exams. However, his tests can be extremely tricky, and coming from an all-A student, sometimes the questions are rather unfair. He is very accessible out of class and cares about his students, but this class isn't for the weak.
Dr. Hilbish is very helpful and will answer any question that students have in detail. However, the tests are very tricky and can cause confusion making them hard to succeed on even if you know the material. I took this course because it is a pre-med requirement but not much of the material pertains to the medical field.
Professor Hilbish is great! Just to warn you, your grade depends basically on 4 tests and the homeworks. However, he's very generous w his grading. His class is hard, but he genuinely wants his students to do well and will try to help you with your grade whenever possible. Attend every class and take notes on everything. Go to the help sessions.
Dr. Hilbish is genuinely just a good guy-- if you show that you care about learning his stuff, he will care and want to help you succeed. His lectures can be dense-- try recording and listening to them back. Four tests, 50 MCQ, lowest test grade is taken for half weight. He's tough, but he makes sure you know the material. Lots of application
Dr. Hilbish is so caring and passionate about biology. He is willing to help you study and his lectures were never super dull; however, your entire grade is based off of four challenging exams. So challenging that an 82=A. I studied so much and felt prepared, but the questions are very confusing and I struggled no matter what. Great but tough.
He is fine. Nice professor will help you if you ask. I personally just think he made the class harder than it needed to be. As an elective class that I had to take on top of my other classes it was frustrating. First time I have ever gotten a C in a class in all of college, and I have taken OChem, Anatomy 1 and 2, and Cell and Molec.
His tests are way too difficult. In class he is very hard to take notes off of when he only uses pictures in his powerpoints. The tests are all multiple choice but very specific questions. Most questions have multiple correct answers, you are expected to "choose the best answer." I think the questions are purposely confusing for no reason.
Overall the best professor I've had. If you want to know how to do anything on the exams, attendance at lectures is basically mandatory. Easy to reach outside of class, consistently present for office hours and will happily reteach content. Truly cares about students and their lives, and is more than willing to help them get connected for research.
While his tests are difficult solely because of how he words the questions, he genuinely cares so much. He wants students to succeed and is very passionate about the subject. Attend as many lectures as you can, even though it isn't mandatory, and write down the examples he talks about. Attend office hours, and he will go over anything.
