my favorite class at UNI - he's real corny, but it's funny. good teacher

Pretty easy class. he is a little different. labs are pretty easy to. one little hint if planning on taking the lab take the class in the fall then you dont have night labs when it is freezing and snowing.

tends to respond to questions in a snobbish manner as if better than or doesnt have the time to help.
He has a funny dry sense of humor and explains things really well. Grade is based on tests and homework. The class is fun and easliy passable.
This man is rude, arrogant, and creepy. I would not take his class. He is very unclear about definitions and assignments. Also, his tests are very tricky.

I thought he was pretty funny, although a little corny but the class is rigorous...very hard i thought but then again im not too fond of science.
He's soooo weird kinda freaks me out. tests are pretty hard i think the average is 70% but and thats with a second chance for 1/4 credit on all answers. He doesnt really teach well but he has a shirt for every planet, moon star constellations and the sun.
Lectures are somewhat interesting but test are extremely hard. Expect to study about 7 hours for each test if you want an A. The class is for beginners but he expects you to know stuff that he hasnt gone over. And he purposely words his test questions to trick you.
not an easy class...but definately fun. He uses hands on examples and makes things a little easier to understand. He makes you laugh every day and his slides are pretty cool too...very little homework, and scratch-off tests w/ a chance for 1/4 credit on the ones you miss!
Interesting guy, wear's t-shirts that correspond with his lectures (i.e. lecture is about Mars, he's wearing a Mars t-shirt)Tests are not easy, he definitely wants you to think. I personally enjoyed his sense of humor. Overall not a bad class.
horrible. made everyone feel like crap. we wanted MORGAN!!!
He is absolutely Hillarious. This couldnt be an easier class. All you have to do is listen durring the lectures and you have an easy A. Don't even bother buying the books since everything on the test is from the lectures.

good visual aids
He had t-shirt corresponding to each lecture. He was always available for help. The coursework was difficult and sometimes incomprehensible. I enjoyed his tests because they were scratch offs (like a lottery) and gave instant results. The class required me to think "out of the box."
Just as an FYI for everyone else who is considering to take this course from this professor, just make sure that you DO NOT schedule an emergency wisdom teeth surgery during a test, because the make up test is NOT EVEN FOR THE SAME CLASS! The test I had to take for a make up was for the LAB astronomy course, therefore I FAILED IT!
He has a facebook & he looks at your pics on your facebook. He trys to be funny, but it doesn't always work. You have to study the book & class notes A LOT for the 4 tests. They are very hard!!! That's 80% of your grade and the rest is the observatory and notecards, which are really hard too. You have to get 20 correct which is like impossible
I only took this class because I needed it for my science minor. It was really difficult to understand what he wanted. Tests were impossible, he asked you things that you NEVER covered in class and that WERE NOT in the book. Way too hard.
Dry sense of humor and amazing, prop based examples of what he's talking about make lessons entertaining and clear. Manages to teach astronomy without burying you in trig. Knowledge is applied in tests, for the most part, rather than just regurgitated. My favorite class this semester. Recommended for anyone who has yet to take a lab.
Took sky interpretation(calls it by different names each year, 100 level astro class)Go to lecture, do the mini quiz in back of chapters, write a 5 pg paper and do some small hw, and this class is in the bag. Tests are still scrach off but questions are the mini quizes, only 2 tests and the paper is your final.
Love the dry sense of humor and his amazingly easy to follow and understand explanations, but his tests are harder than what he goes over in class, and very little he says is in the book actually is. Unclear at times in lab, and he can get kind of snide and condescending, but overall he was okay...
I can't say enough good things about Dr. Hockey. I think he is HILARIOUS! I took astronomy and would recommend him to anyone science major or not.
Tests are very hard. I can take notes in class, read the chapters, take my own notes over them, study a lot, and still not do well on the tests. Grading is not fair, especially in the lab, where he can't tell you why you got the grade you did. What he teaches in lecture and the tests do not correlate well. I do not recommend this professor.
Had Dr. Hockey and James Robinson for cosmology of ancient people. Had a hard time deciding which I liked less. Hockey is boring to listen to, doesn't do much to keep the class interesting and is not very approachable. Tests were difficult and only based on the lectures, which were impossible to stay focused during.
The class wasn't horrible but usually was pretty dull. His tests have very little to do with his lectures, and regardless of how much you take in there will be information on the test that you've never heard of before. During my semester he broke his foot so instead of teaching us he played videos of himself teaching that were from 1994.
I took this class back in the Fall of 2013. Looking back I have to say that this was by far the hardest class that I have taken at UNI. Lectures are really boring and hard to follow. And no matter what we studied, there were always questions that weren't in the book, study guide or discussed in the lectures. Not very helpful either. Don't take.
Took Astronomy as an online class. DO NOT DO IT. Picky grader, tests are impossible to get better than a D or low C. Questions are get it or you don't, no partial credit.
Very dry sense of humor. Pretty dull guy too. Just sits at the front of the class and drones on about planets and stuff. The lab was easy, but the lecture was impossible to stay awake in. He's just a pretty weird guy in general, and isn't all that approachable. Avoid taking astronomy in general, but if you have to don't take it with him!
Probably one of the worst professors at UNI. Lectures are hard to follow as he is difficult to understand. Tests are ridiculously difficult and often contain material that wasn't covered class. Never available outside of class. I spent more time studying for this class that my two Intermediate Accounting classes combined. Do not take.
Poor DR. Hockey, he got such bad reviews. Some of it's true, his sense of humor is dry, he's like 90. His lectures are hard to stay awake because he shuts the lights off and talks in some sort of hypnotic way. I couldn't stay awake. However you get two chances to answer on tests. Give old Doc Hock a break!
This was a tough class but I learned a lot! He does a lot of demonstrations that help explain tough concepts. Labs are pretty simple- if you go to all of them he drops your lowest lab score. Tests are difficult- I go to every class AND read the textbook. If you're bad at math, TAKE THIS CLASS- he doesn't make students do math in class and on exams!
Took Astronomy with him and hated it 90% of the time. Lecture was hard to follow along with, he didn't explain things in a way that made sense to everyone. When you ask questions, he acts like you are dumb for asking them. Tests are "adult multiple choice" meaning they are very, very hard questions over material that wasn't ever mentioned in class.
I took Astronomy with him almost four years ago, and I absolutely hated it. Tests are totally unrelated to his lectures, the textbook, and even the labs. Lectures are extremely hard to follow and he's never available outside of class. Can be pretty condescending when you ask him questions. AVOID this professor.
Could not stand to be in class anymore. Super old, boring professor. 1 out of 3 seniors in class. Mostly freshman, they thought he was so funny. He is NOT! Planning to drop class!
He is a very boring dry professor. Seems to know his stuff but is very hard to pay attention to. Doesn't deliver the material in a helpful way.
Is not a bad professor by any means; definitely knows his material and teaches it well enough. My biggest gripe is that lectures are delivered rather blandly, making being immersed difficult. Tests are done by scratching, like a lotto ticket, and aren't particularly difficult if you study properly. You also get daily questions in place of homework.
Hockey was great. He sips water throughout class because of a mouth condition, but he is generally understandable and goes slowly through the material. He answers questions well, and he seems to be a generally likeable and even-keeled person.
Hockey was a great professor who is an expert in his own field. His lectures are on point an elaborate greatly on the content in the text book. He also knows how to bring in the needed levity to the classroom by throwing a few jokes and has regular office hours!
I was a freshman when I took this class and definitely recommend it! Even though it was difficult, Hockey is fair and knows his stuff...
Great class!!! Dr. Hockey is a bit old school but he has done a great job. I feel like I actually know and understand the astronomy. No negative comments!
Great class and professor!
Dr. Hockey is an interesting professor. While he is really funny (unintentionally), he sometimes makes you feel REALLY stupid for some questions you ask. His lectures are very bland, often times leaving you more confused than ever. While I have learned a lot, I feel like I am being done a disservice by being in his class. Get ready to study!!
I took this class with Hockey because I was told how great he is. He may have just been off this semester, but we watched videos almost the whole semester of old lectures. He is not responsive to emails. He didn't come to class for over two weeks and said nothing to us. He is knowledgable and kind, but he wasn't what I expected.
Dr. Hockey was one of the worst professors I've had here at UNI. He must've been having an off semester because he only lectured us in person for about a month and then started showing us videos from the 90's of him lecturing, which weren't very informative. If the DVD player malfunctioned, he'd dismiss us with no notes for the test..
If you're looking to take Astronomy w/ Hockey for an LAC, I would reconsider. He's a good guy, but this is a hard class that was taught pretty poorly. He lectured the first month of the semester and then showed us videos of him lecturing in the 90's the rest of the semester. You're only graded by exams and notecards that you turn in during class.
Hockey isn't a great professor. He taught before the first test, but after that we just watched movies. If you ask a question, he'll probably make you feel stupid for asking and not answer it specifically at all. He also gave us the wrong reading assignments for unit two, but didn't tell us the correct reading.
Never read the textbook, fell asleep in class half the time. Hockey is generally a pretty decent guy and sometimes actually funny, but so boring. A lot of the class is just videos. There are 4 exams and a notecard question everyday for attendance. He wears an astronomy shirt to match the lesson everyday. Dude LOVES the stars! Nice guy, bad teacher.
Hockey is an okay guy, but not a great professor. After the first exam of the year he only shows videos. He does not post grades on blackboard, you have to wait until the end of the semester to know your grade.
I took this class in the fall and thought it was easy. I skipped class a few times and I never opened the textbook. I got an A- which I thought was good for the effort I put into the class. In the spring I told one of my friends to take it. She read the book cover to cover, took notes, and never skipped but walked away with a C. Very Inconsistent.
Hockey is a character! He wears a shirt that corresponds with the lecture everyday and is so passionate about teaching. That being said the textbook is basically non essential except for answering the homework questions. If you get 20 homework note cards you get full credit for homework which is easy peasy. Tests are a bit hard, overall I had fun.
Online course, summer 2020. 30 homework questions, 4 tests. Little to none of the material in the test was in the book. Questions for homework had to be searched up online. Very tough grader on the homework questions, one word off & he would count the entire problem incorrect. Inconsistent grading, too. Somehow I got an A-, I knew almost nothing.
He was horrible. Either did a boring lecture the entire time or had us watch a nova video for the entire class period. One day he showed up 30 min late and was upset that most of the class had left. He was not sensitive to students with disabilities and treated them like they were a burden. He had questions on the tests that were never discussed
Out of all the classes I took at the University of Northern Iowa this was by far my least favorite professor. Grades everything in a specific way so lots of people miss points. Also bragged a lot about how nobody did well in his classes. Wanted his students to fail.
This class is ridiculous. I really love a challenge, but through academics not through someone's insane expectations of the presentation of the work! He has little to no compassion either, do not expect any slack. I am on the deans list, with scholarships have never failed a course, and have never wrote a rating on a professor, this is the one.
If zoom doesnt cooperate then youre screwed. He doesnt send the lectures to you even if you missed because zoom troubles. Also has little content discussed on tests. Almost all questions are not discussed in class and youre left to assume. He seemed like a very cool person, but a terrible professor. I am an honor student and Im getting a c.
I feel like if class wasn't online it would have been easier. The tests are hard and don't really relate to lectures in some aspects. Homework is needed and is straight from the textbook, so you need to have the book. Demonstrations are cool and he is sweet, but he acknowledges that people barely pass with grades above a C.
Thomas Hockey has shirts that match the theme of every lecture. The class consists of 4 tests each other 20 points each and homework questions that add up to 20 points total. At the beginning of every class he says "Alexa its time" and she goes "Studio 501b, somewhere on the hill, It's earth science 1100 with professor Thomas Hockey."
100 points available in the class, 4 quizzes (20 points each), twenty homework points available. No extra credit. Hw straight out of the book that you must buy, if your answer is doesn't match his, you don't get the point. 32 (ish) chances to get all hw points, but highly unlikely. Would not take again.
Prides himself on students not passing his tests like a personality trait. Lectures are boring and he could never figure out zoom. Tests have nearly nothing to do with lectures; you have to apply the concepts to what is prompted. He is nice and funny though. He really loves astronomy and is passionate, just not a people person ig.
For a 1000-level course, this was bogus. An unhealthy amount of time is spent sitting through Zoom lectures (COVID) and you really need to pay attention. The textbook was HARDLY needed, but required if you want to answer participation questions for lectures. Not an awful guy himself, but teaches way above a first year level.
I took the six week astronomy class. He should not be teaching a level 1000 class. He makes it beyond difficult to pass. His test is a matter of a guessing game as there are more then one answer that is correct. He is strict on answers for hw questions as well. He is strict on how things are submitted and doesnt seem to care if you pass.
Thomas Hockey is by far the most disrespectful professor I have ever had while attending UNI. You get 20 HW assignments throughout the entire semester & fighting for your answer when you believe it is correct; is pointless. DO NOT take his class if you don't have to. He takes pride in his students failing his class. Decent human being- bad teacher
Im not ganna lie, this was definitely a hard class. He is not a good professor, the first day of class he said most of you will fail this course and laughed. He does not care to help and is disrespectful if you do ask for help. Do not take his class if you have a choice. Goodluck if you have to.
Chose this class because I'm fascinated by astronomy and thought I'd love it. Wrong. Tests were so specific over things that weren't really in the posted lectures and he was rude to me when I would ask questions over what I missed. Need the textbook for homework. Ended with an 88, but counted as a B because of the scale. Wouldn't recommend.
It was easy to follow along and understand his lectures, but when it came to the exams, they extremely specific and over information he never discussed during class. Homework was easy, but you only get credit for 20 questions out of the assigned 40. There is no extra credit offered. His explanations to students questions were very confusing.
Didnt seem to care when students would let him know that the giant beam in the room made them unable to see the screen. Wont share his PowerPoints to students gone for covid or athletics. Speaks so slow that its physically hard to actually want to be in class. When the class started he said most people fail his class and then laughed about it.
Worst grading I have experienced at UNI! Do not take if you have a choice. So disrespectful, he doesn't seem to know what he wants with his homework questions. I got a zeros for answers I knew were correct and he didn't care to fix and then he commented that it was "annoying" to read through my longer answers.
He doesn't explain what to do or how to do things. I am confused 100% of the time because he doesn't explain anything clearly. It's obvious that he doesn't communicate with the TA because they give me different answers to the same question. He grades tough and once stated to the class that "just getting the right answer is not good enough."
Overall, he was pretty good. Read the book and pay attention and you'll be fine.
The exams were online which was nice but he made the questions way more difficult than they needed to be. You need the textbook to do the homework questions and he puts the question on the board at the end of class. He did offer a few extra credit opportunities. Very goofy guy and hard to understand sometimes.
his lectures are amazing he actually cares about teaching. get some friends in his class so someone can get the homework every day. the homework is easy but you just have to go to class to know what it is. exams were online too
I was hesitant to take this class upon seeing the reviews, but I'm glad I did. It was super interesting and I looked forward to every lecture. You HAVE to sit in the front or middle to see his models and demonstrations.Talks a bit slow, but that makes it easier to take notes faster. Exams are 80% of the grade, so you really need to know your stuff.
He doesn't grade things the way you would want. He also makes things very confusing and doesn't answer questions very well. I get very confused by things and it's not very easy to ask questions knowing you won't get a good answer back.
You HAVE to be in class to know what the homework assignments are. Every day is a lecture and there are 4 exams with no final. Hockey is very quirky and goofy which is nice but sometimes it gets in the way of him explaining things. He is the only prof that teaches Astronomy and Astronomy lab.
By far the best science class I've ever had. Always able to ask for help and can work together on labs.
Unilaterally makes class and grading decisions that inconvenience students. Generally unwilling to cooperate with assigned accommodations. Refused to grade a single assignment or test until the end of the semester. Runs off of an unconventional grading system also.
He is extremely well-versed in his subject. Stick with it--he is definitely worth it as a professor. Good at explaining difficult subjects and seems to have a model or visual metaphor for every day. Attendance is not mandatory for a grade, but you need to attend to know the homework questions. Clear syllabus and grading setup. Excellent professor.
Class was difficult and it was hard to connect materials to the tests. Definitely need the textbook because he does not tell you everything on the test even though he talks for forever. Does demonstrations in class that kind of help. Very understanding if you need to reschedule a test.
He is kind of hard to understand and doesn't really go into detail on things in the unit.
You're graded based on 20/35 homework questions (easy) and 4 exams. The exams are extremely difficult so be prepared to study. They're 40 multiple choice questions for .5 point each. It says the textbook is required, but you don't need it. The readings aren't worth anything and I didn't do any of them and it was fine.
Very monotone could fall asleep every time and was a bit bland.
