Holme is a decent professor and a nice guy. He's easy to understand, but not always easy to follow. I didn't think his lecture notes were very helpful. I would recommend trying to take the class with Greenbowe if possible because he uses more examples and explained things more clearly. If you got to Holme's lecture regularly, you'll learn from him.

Not a good professor
A good teacher who knows his stuff. He wrote the textbook! Lots of opportunities for extra help. Some lecture things can be a bit confusing. Tests aren't too bad, just do some thorough studying.
pretty good professor. he is very easy to understand and wrote the textbook, so he konws his stuff. some things are a little confusing and with 400 people in the class, it usually doesn't get cleared up during lectures.
he did write the book. he knows his stuff. lectures are confusing, but you can allways talk to him in his office; hes very open.
He is not a bad teacher, but does took too much about insignificant things on a regular basis.
Prof. Holme is a good lecturer, he really knows his stuff and he attempts to make lecture interesting by breaking it up with clicker questions and discussion. Tests are kind of hard, but if you read the book, and go over the study guide, it's easy to get a good grade. also take advantage of all the extra credit offered.
Takes a little time for the student getting used to having 500 classmates in your class, but I am sure he doesn't mind having this many because we all have to buy his book. We also have to buy retard clickers that are expensive to replace just so we can prove to him that we are paying attention in class.
Decent. Chem 167 for a lot of people is one of those classes you HAVE to take but don't really want to. I didn't think I would have to attend lecture as I took Chem in High School, but he grades you on clicker questions in class so without going you loose a significant amount of points. Pretty disappointing.
Good teacher. makes some very nerdy jokes. Got through the first part of the class okay with prior chemistry knowledge. I did have to read the book towards the end but overall the class isn't that hard if you do the work and take notes. He is a good teacher, he knows his stuff(wrote the book).
Great teacher. Wrote the book. Class doesn't take up too much time.
Prof. Holme makes great strides to ensure that his students understand the material, but the grading is un-necessarily strict. The TA's are unforgiving when grading exams and quizzes, with little to no partial credit being given on long problems. Also, the occasional substitute teacher talks to the class like they're retarded. It hinders learning.
Good teach and a good guy. This class is tough unless you put in the work. Go to the lectures and read the book and read the book and read the book. (the book is the key to this class)
Good professor who really knows his stuff. Lectures were on topic and provided a good overview. The tests were fairly difficult and were graded very strictly. However, you can make up loads of points on the final. Go to class because clicker points are big. Difficult class but still pretty good.
Could pretty much make up all of your tests in the final so very helpful. He was pretty funny and he really knew what he was talking about.
Good teacher and easy to listen to. Makes class interesting. Not much need for the book, since he is the author and his notes are very comprehensive.
Lectures are clear and not boring. Doctor Holme does his best to keep the material relevant and fairly easy to understand. Not an easy course, but if you put the effort in, you will be rewarded.
Dr. Holme is a great lecturer. He wrote the textbook, so he definitely knows his stuff, but he makes it easy to understand. Lectures aren't dry, he even throws in a little humor sometimes. I highly recommend him.
Holme would definately fit in on the Big Bang Theory cast if your trying to get a mental picutre. Hes cool but Chemistry is just not my cup of tea and I am I smart guy, yet I've failed almost every test! Pretty hard class if you have no chemistry experience. If you like Chemistry it should be a breeze!
He makes the lectures interesting and they seem to go by really fast. By using clicker questions he gets you involved and it doesn't seem like such a huge class. The tests are challenging but doable.
He is a great professor. The course work was very difficult but he made the class enjoyable. He goes out of his way to help (has review sessions, virtual office hours, etc.) especially during finals time. I highly recommend him as a professor and I wish I could take more classes with him.
Attendance is a must due to clicker points. If you print the lectures slides as notes you will do well. Pay attention during class as 95% of the material on the exams is covered in class. Basically, the only grade that matters is the final. Since he gives resurrection points, if you do poorly on previous exams, your grade can easily go from C to A.
Professor Holme, or "T. Holme" as I like to call him, is a boss! Undoubtably the best professor I've ever had. Exams are difficult but managable. If you do well on the final, he will go back and change your grade from the previous exams. You can literally go from a D to an A! He is a genius and unbelievably helpful. Awesome guy.
Professor Holme is seriously one of the best teachers I've ever had. He's a very nice guy and is flexible with deadlines if you talk to him. The tests are primarily open note, and anything on the test is covered in the notes during class. Loved this class and Holme also!
I originally heard he was a great teacher, but being in his class this semester I realized he is not. I am a good student and always advocate for myself. I have not heard back from him 2 separate times via email and when I talk to him in class he blows me off. It is his last semester at Iowa State so he might have given up. Very disappointed.
He is very goofy but that makes him hilarious. From his background n chemistry you know he is very very knowledgeable in the field. Chem 160 is a joke so you might as well enjoy the class with Professor Holme!
He's a good teacher that makes lecture interesting. Be warned that clickers are used daily to check if you're showing up so go to the lectures. If you don't the a fair chunk of your grade could go missing.
His lectures are good but he doesn't seem to cover the material given on tests completely. Overall a really tough class and not the best teacher for it, especially since he is more engineering geared!
Holme is a really good professor, he helps his student learning chemistry by different methods. However, the huge problem is that he separate his lecture and the tests. Basically, his lectures doesn't cover even 10% of the tests. Other than that, he is a really good teacher.
He's a really interesting professor. He makes things very clear in class and make sure the students understand. He gives students the chance to actually learn the material not just do things for points. Tests are pretty straight forward.
He is pretty funny and he really explains concepts well in lecture. He uses clicker questions every day so go to lecture. His grading is very fair but also pretty easy.
Took this class for a science credit, and really didnt mind it. It had interesting content in it, and Holme was a good teacher and really knew what he was talking about. He should really get a laptop case for his stuff, he uses an old cardboard box to carry his stuff around. Hes a good professor and interesting class.
I started out this semester with full confidence I was going to ace the course with Dr. Holme. As the semester went on, I started banking on maybe getting a C. I ended up with a B-, so I can't complain. Not the grade I wanted, but not worth retaking. Study. Go to class. Go to SI. Get a tutor. Chemistry is hard, so be prepared to work.
Lectures were fairly interesting and helped with understanding the content. Clicker points made up a large percentage of the grade (over 8%) so it is helpful to go to class. Pretty funny and definitely knew a lot about chemistry.
Dr. Holme was always super enthusiastic and made the class fun. Chem is a lot of work in general but if you keep up and go to class you'll do just fine. Oh and study for tests, they're standardized within the department and can be kind of difficult.
Highly recommend if you can get his class!
Dr. Holme is funny and enthusiastic, but chemistry is really hard. He tries to make the class fun, but be prepared to study. I was retaking chemistry from high school where I got a really good grade, but ended up with a B- in his class. The tests are difficult because they're from the chem department, so go to SI and ask questions.
Cares about the students and wants to see you succeed. His lectures are fun and he makes it interesting. He does his exams so he tries to make it fair. If you have questions go to his office hours he will be happy to explain it to you. As long as you go to lecture, read the book, do the homework and practice you will be alright.
Overall a pretty good professor, he lets you retake two of your exams at the end of the semester in Chem177. He's tough but very fair and as long as you read the book and do the homework you should be fine.
Holme knows his stuff and has a tendency to go fast in lecture. Outside practice and studying is definitely required for his class. Overall a really good class and as long as you try hard you'll be fine.
Dr. Holmes tells you what you need to know the exam and final, but he does not teach it. He briefly goes over topics and his tests are very difficult. He does offer two retakes which helps a lot. You may go over a unit for a week and not one question from that unit will be on the exam. Extremely passive aggressive as well. Go to SI to pass!
Great professor! Posts slides before each class and lecture recordings after. Uses lots of examples and practice for difficult concepts. You can tell he really cares about his students. Tests are tough but he provides lots of resources to help you do well. Would definitely take a course with him again.
From what I heard while taking the class, he is the easiest general chemistry professor. Mostly because hes been teaching for awhile. He made material easy to understand but he would go on tangents unrelated to the course material.
I had him last fall and at the beginning of the semester I really enjoyed his class. But by the end I didn't care for his attitude and how he spoke to students. He would talk down and was also passive aggressive. But his teaching style was good, but if you had a hard time understanding chemistry in high school I would go to the SI sessions.
Dr. Holme is a fairly decent professor. He obviously knows his stuff which can often come across as arrogant. He's decent and gives you good feedback if you ask for it. His lectures are usually pretty quick paced but he does a decent job of explaining things. Not my favorite professor but far from a bad professor.
He was really hard to pay attention to.
Test-heavy, not a lot of opportunities to recover from bad grades so make sure you do good on the tests! Attendance is graded, he's a good lecturer but he goes fast so if you struggle with Chemistry get a lot of outside help; they really want you to read the textbook. Holme is very condescending when asked questions! Also does not round up grades!
He is a nice guy but you have to do well on the tests to do well in the class. He moves very quickly so I would recommend rewatching his lectures, going to SI,and getting extra help if you struggle with chemistry.
Got 100% in attendance, homework, quizzes, and the paper. Didn't do the best on two of the tests and got a bad grade in the class. His test have random questions about material he maybe mentioned for 20 seconds during a lecture.
If you have a bad grade. Sucks. You can't recover from it. He literally will examine you on things that are not covered very well and you are souly responsible to figure things out with the textbook outside of class. WORST CLASS. If I had another teacher I would have passed.
I got 100 on every assignment and 100 on the paper we wrote. Based on three tests my grade was still very poor. The only way to boost your grade is study a month in advance for the final. Holme was very negative towards his students and at one point assumed the people not sitting at the front were deaf or just careless because of their seating.
A real conceptual teacher. I was in his honors section and he taught me wonders. He does grade tough and has more difficult exams than the other profs, however, he is much better at teaching and will prepare you more for the future.
No curves. If you review his study guide it is point on. switched from one class to another pretty tough and gives you an extra credit "exam". TA and professor give you two different answers. You can Tophat from home but you should go to class if you don't understand the material. You should go to tutor, study, read, and prepare for your class.
I took both 177 and 178 with Holme, and I absolutely loved being in his class. His teaching style is very effective and he is a great person and a great teacher. He gives a lot of opportunities for students to improve their grades and is very good at giving feedback. Holme adds a lot of personality to his lectures, and he makes chemistry fun!
Good class if you took AP Chem in high school. If you haven't taken AP Chem, DO NOT take this class. Holme is very bright but uses an "engineering type" of teaching and if you are a straight forward type of person then his lectures get confusing. Hardest class at ISU. He does not check emails.
Honestly one of the worst professors I've had here at Iowa State. The class is HEAVILY graded on tests which are once every two weeks. He does not give much information on what will be on the test, and always states that his practice tests are not what is going to be on the actual exams. This makes it hard to even know what to study for..
Holme is by far the worst professor I have ever had. During lecture he does no run through problems and expects you to know them on your own. He may run through how to do a problem one day, but then he will totally dismiss it and just expect you to understand every problem that is given to you.
He was a great teacher. I wish I would take all chemistry classes with him. He makes you think beyond just learning information. Everything is related to relevant, real world problems.
Professor was horrible. Class averages on exams were 60-70%. He does not "believe" in extra credit. He does things completely different than all of the other chemistry professors. Tests are only 15 questions worth 60 points so you are basically screwed. I did everything I could to raise my grade and still barely passed.
Overall a great professor I came thinking that Chemistry was going to be hard, but it wasn't, I had taken AP Chem in High School and didn't receive the credit to pass out of Freshmen chem but he made the class enjoyable. He could acutely teach and made the class an interesting place I also was able to declare my major in Chemistry becaus of him.
Holme applies chemistry to the real world. He responds to emails in less than an hour most days. You can tell how passionate he is to help kids learn. Unlike most chem classes, you must write a paper, but it is an easy way to boost your grade.
Lectures are really helpful. Tests are on the harder side but nothing too bad. Attendance isn't mandatory but there are "exit tickets" or pop quizzes that you take at the end of class. He is really responsive and overall a good teacher.
he makes no sense whatsoever. he takes attendance points for lectures. if he didnt do that itd be okay cause im just learning it independently but he will mark u for academic misconduct for no show. if u take this class u will be learning independently but u still have to waste your time by showing up to class just to learn nothing. im good at chem
He is not a fair grader along with rambling in his lectures.
If you did not take AP chemistry during high school get ready to struggle. You can tell Holme really loves chemistry but is not good at teaching it and often adds unnecessary concepts to the exams. Lectures are pointless but mandatory, as he uses tophat for attendance points.
I took AP Chem in high school so I already knew the content and didn't have to study too much. The tests weren't too difficult, but the class average for each test was 75%. He mumbles a lot, so it can be hard to understand him. However, I do appreciate how much he emphasizes sustainability in his lectures.
Lectures are content heavy and he rambles on about how the class content relates to the outside world way more than actually focusing on the main lesson. Tests are extremely difficult and averages were about 65% all semester. Have to write a paper which none of the other profs do. Had to get a tutor to understand anything that was being taught.
He's an okay teacher, lectures are kind of hard to follow. I highly recommend going to class because he uses TopHat and those points are essential for getting a good grade. There is an essay which is easy to do but none of the other Chem177 professors have an essay. Tests are hard but you get to retake 2/3 of the tests at the end of the semester.
Holme focuses on the big picture and sustainability for the first half of the class. There was a 500 word paper due halfway through the course, which was a decent part of the grade for the class; it was fairly easy. Towards the end of the course, content gets more in depth and difficult. The teacher knows his chemistry and encourages engagement
This class is not hard to get an A in. Holme is a fine professor but the tests can be difficult. If you go to class and pay attention, and do the homework, you'll be fine. He does use TopHat, which are easy points. If you don't pay attention or don't try, you will not succeed. Reach out to him if you need help.
Dr. Holme is an alright professor who likes his job and teaching. However, his lectures tend to go over A LOT of topics in just one lecture and constantly add to what is already on the slides, so it is important to pay attention. Tests are pretty difficult, but as long as you practice the OWL before the exam, it should help prepare you.
He was a good professor
His lectures are extremely unorganized and long. The grading style of this class is also one reason I hate it. Tests are 25 questions multiple choice, but 1 question could be worth anywhere from 3-4 points each. So your grade could tank easily. All around I just do not enjoy my time in Holmes class. His class has costed me many tears.
He has a system where you can earn more pints than there are available. Overall, I don't think he grades that rough seeing as you can score partial credit on quizzes, granted, those can hit pretty heavy. There are a lot of points given for participation.
Holme was an okay professor. He's the only chem professor with an essay in his curriculum, but he grades it relatively easily, which might help your overall grade. The tests are hard and may mention topics that don't seem relevant. Attendance isn't mandatory, but there are easy participation points during each lecture. No text book needed.
He knows what he is talking about, but sometimes he is incredibly boring. He also made our section write a paper even though the other sections didn't and it was about something that we didn't really learn in the class. The tests weren't too difficult, but they varied in difficulty. He does Top Hat, but it is the same code every time.
Average professor. My main issue is that we had to write an essay, which no other chem professors make us do, and it was graded very harshly. Lectures were insightful and enjoyable, but the way he grades is very confusing. Holme kind of does his own thing and is different than anything I've seen in the chem department. Very interesting experience.
Very engaging and try's his best to make sure everyone understands.
He relates topics in Chemistry back to the central topic so you understand how the chemistry is applied. His lectures are good. Go to class and get points from TopHat. Homework is pretty easy as well. You don't need to read the textbook. Sometimes it is hard to hear in the big lecture hall but overall would reccommend taking this class with him.
He cares about his students and I can tell he loves to teach, but I personally did not like his style of teaching, especially for chemistry. Between the poorly explained slides and the random tangents on candles and wild fires I did not learn much from lectures. Exams did not really match course material. Easy homework and TopHat points though!
Entertaining guy, passionate, knowledgeable. Participation in lecture counts towards grade. Tests are short but multiple choice and heavily weighted, if you miss two or more questions you won't get an A. Decent amount of homework but easy. Caps off points available in each category, very easy to reach the maximum which I liked. Some extra credit.
Very lecture heavy. His teaching style wasn't my favorite. It feels like he talks around the point and never really makes it very clear. Test are multiple choice but still not easy. Test are also very heavily weighted so if you do bad on one, it will drag down your grade. He uses TopHat in class for points. Overall, nice guy though.
He's a decent professor, but I didn't like the way he taught. I went to maybe 10 lectures and they all confused me. Did the TopHat questions from my bed. I was already familiar with the material of the class so I was able to do well. In discussion sections I ended up teaching the people sitting next to me weekly. Not the worst, just not for me
Dr. Holme's teaching style makes the class unnecessarily difficult. He rushes through explanations and flies through PowerPoint slides, making it hard to take notes or understand the material. The exams are another issue. They're too close together, worth very few points, and just a few mistakes can tank your grade. Would not recommend.
His class is very lecture heavy. I often found it hard to keep up and retain what he was saying as he over explains with vocab that only a grad student would know. We only had 5 tests before the final, but each question is weighted heavily and so are the exams as a whole, so if you get 1 or 2 questions wrong, your grade is screwed.
Lectures are useless honestly, he doesn't really explain the material all that well. One thing he did that I liked was the extra credit opportunities at the end of the semester. But overall this class stressed me out.
Eh. His lectures were quite boring and I found it difficult to stay engaged and keep up. His grading policy is nice even though everything else was meh
Did not like him. Lectures were BORING. 5 in class exams were given out before final exam and he would give out "study guides" that did not help at all. I recommend buying the ACS study guide because this saved me for the final exam. Homework is very frustrating and takes a long time. If you have him, good luck.
His lectures can be boring and he uses TopHat. The exams suck and are usually 8-12 questions, 4-6 points each so missing one question can tank your grade. He did offer resurrection points that brought my grade up a ton. Buy the ACS study guide for the final, study hard, go to class and you will be totally fine.
Awful. Rude. Dismissive. I attended every class, went to SI sessions, got a tutor, went to the chem help room, and was still barely understanding the content. After class one day I asked him for extra guidance since I was struggling and he basically told me "IDK what to tell you". Had to drop the class since it was affecting me so poorly. AVOID HIM
Sometimes the lectures would drag on, but he had materials to help you understand the material. The course is very test-heavy, but if you study and come to class, you will be fine. Other than that pretty easy course just do the work.
Professor Holme is a good professor who explains things through lectures pretty well. There are very few demonstrations in this class, so take that into account. The course aligns directly with the lab. Lots of slides and a lot of reading and homework. He is accessible outside of class and is pretty understanding. Exams are difficult though.
Failed to make the class super interesting for me. Was still a valuable learning experience, but I would review all my options prior to taking him.
He is a great professor, especially coming from someone who struggles with chemistry. He tries everything to encourage the learning of his students. Just study and pay attention and you will be good!
