This past semester was Holovics's 1st, so I was a little worried. It turns out, he was my favorite teacher this semester and made chemistry semi-fun! He really cares about his students and was available anytime I needed help. I definitely recommend Dr. Holovics!
Really a great teacher. Gives excellent notes and good lectures. If you put in the time, there's no reason you can't do well in his class.

very easy and fun. did demos. he was very enthusiastic and kind of quirky. his tests were pretty easy, but he was harsh on grading sometimes. he gives a lot of extra credit too. easy A.
Tom Holovics = The Man. Nominated him for the teacher/man of the year. He is the best guy in the world!!! He really cares about his students and you can tell he loves what he does. Really fair tests. Major Kansas fan so watch out around March (he gets into it). I recommend Tom Cat to both incoming students and for man of the century.
He is an amazing teacher. Full of fun and he enjoys what he does. If you need help, he will help you. He is very clear and gives good extra credit. His tests are fair and will help you out. Definitely reccommend him!
Holovics as an excellent teacher. He is the best professor I have had at SIUE thus far. He provides notes on blackboard that can be printed off and are presented in class. It made the class 100 times better. Tom provides prep guides for every test. I highly recommend Holovics for Chemistry.
Good teacher, makes the class as clear and easy as possible. I olny studied for each test for about an hour or two and didn't even crack open the book and got a B. Is willing to go out of the way for students, and is a pretty cool guy...highly recommended.
I really liked him a lot...he is a joker and enjoys what he does. His tests are fair, and I did look forward to his class pretty much every day. Plus, he's kind of cute! lol
What a great guy he teaches the material great and is very helpful with any question. His multiple choice on test sometimes are very tricky but the test are exactly what he says and its pretty easy to get an A.
Very good teacher. Tests are good and very fair. if you attend class you wont have to do much studying.
Holovics is an amazing teacher. Probably one of the best chem teachers i have ever had. His lecture slides are incredibly helpful and his tests are not that bad either. He has a great sence of humor and is really understanding when you need help with something. If I could take every chem class I had to with Holovics I would!!
he's an awesome teacher! he wants everyone to do really well unlike a lot of gen chem teachers. he is in his office and willing to help almost all the time. he does tons of examples which really helps. on his quizzes you get 5 out of the 10 points just for writing your name on the quiz. TAKE HOLOVICS IF YOU CAN!!!
He was a great teacher. I learned SO much from him last semester and he explained things in a way that I can understand. (which is good since I am terrible at chemistry). He is a great guy! :)
Amazing teacher. Always willing to help after class or during office hours. Very clear and covers what you need to know and always tries to offer extra points to help you receive a good grade. Best chem teacher i have ever had and would strongly recommend taking him. He will teach you so much about chemistry and you will enjoy it along the way.
I repeated Chem 1 and 2 with this professor and went from having a D to getting a B. He's a very very nice person, and as long as you do all the homework until you get 9's or 10's and do the supplemental homework, you'll be set. He's extremely helpful outside of class as well and a wonderful teacher. I hate chemistry and it was my easiest class.
He is a good teacher as long as you can stay awake listening to him lecture. He gave us lots of extra credit and rounded the exam scores. Do the online homework early so you can visit his office if you have any questions.
Mr. Holovics knows his stuff, he is very easy to follow a long with and is helpful! He is always in his office hours when said and will walk you through any homework assignment. Show up for class & do your homework and you will be fine. Great professor!
Doc Hoc is an amazing guy. Easy to understand, easy to get along with and most of all he loves chemistry. Just loves it. He's funny and weird and just overall fantastic. Also, he's a lumberjack in his free time. Take the class.
I really liked him. He teaches well and does his best to make class fun. He is very helpful outside of class. His tests can sometime be harder then you expect. You do have to study if even you think you know it. TAKE THIS CLASS !
Pretty undecided on this teacher... He definitely made chemistry a better class than most professors, but his multiple choice test questions are ridiculous! Usually missed about half of them on average, along with lots of other people in class. Besides that, he was a pretty good teacher..funny, entertaining, helpful, very easy to understand.
Holovics is the man!! Excellent chemistry teacher.
LOVE him!! he was such a good teacher. even in lecture he would answer individual questions and would make sure all 300 of us understood. he was so easy to follow as long as you come to class and do the homework the weekly pop quizes and tests are no brainers. hes an amazing teacher!
Class is very much geared toward solving problems. He does a great job working problems during class. The final is completely different from everything he teaches in class. It's the dumbest thing in the world. But he curved it so much it didn't really matter.
I took chem 120 and 121 with him and he was great!! He was always willing to help and did examples to make sure everyone understood! You can tell he really cares about his students and wants them all to do well
Not bad, but not the best. I didn't like his teaching style, it wasn't best for me. Example after example, doesn't focus on anything else. Really dull, but does know his stuff. Take Gattung!
Dr. Holovics is a great teacher. Helpful, clear, and intelligent. His exams are a bit long, but he often realizes this and compensates with a curve if necessary. He uses a pop-quiz system, so attendance is somewhat required. Overall, I absolutely recommend him. You'd be hard pressed to find a better chem instructor.
Great teacher! very helpful! if you go to class you will do well on his tests. he curves almost all of his tests along with the final. homework is done online, which is easy to do as well! Overall, i thought he was a very good teacher, and i did good in his class!
He teaches well but the tests are very hard.
He was extremely helpful and made sure if anything was unclear by the end of class everyone was on the same page. Tests were difficult but one of the best learning experiences I've ever had.
He is a very good teacher and really cares about his students. All homework is online and you can use notes on all the quizzes. HIS TESTS ARE VERY HARD!!! You need to study your butt off for them, some of them are curved, but don't count on it.
Dr. Holovics is an excellent chemistry professor. He provides his students with a lot of chances to improve their grades.
Dr. Holovics was a great professor!!!! Study very hard for his exams so you do not have to worry about the final. I worked my butt off and I got an A. Be prepared to work in his class to do well!
Holovics is a super nice guy and trys to make class very interesting! I entered this class with no chemistry experience and had to drop it. Holovics goes through the material very quickly. Also, the examples we do in class are MUCH easier than the ones on the test. I did well in every aspect of the class except the tests. Tests are very long!
Dr. Lumberjack is awesome. His lectures were very informative. His tests were fair and they were straight from the homework and notes. You have to study for Chemistry but it was a great class and I would take him again.
Very nice man. Pop quizzes but allows you to use notes. Tests are hard, but if you do the suggested problems from the book, you usually get a good grade. Very helpful. Always preaches about office hours. Online homework is definitely helpful. Final is the ACS standardized test, but he gives great review for it. Great class, great teacher!
One of the best teachers I have had at SIUe. Has pop quizzes, but you are allowed to use your notes. He is always willing to help and he explains things VERY well. His tests can be a bit challenging, but he prepares you for them extremely well. Overall, an EXCELLENT teacher.
No complaints about Holovics...just the tests. They are really long and I usually never struggle at completing tests in a class period. He does give extra credit opportunities!
He is the best chemistry teacher that SIUE has.
Best chemistry teacher!Enough Said!
He is the best Chem teacher and I would highly recommend him to anyone intrested in taking Chemistry. The exams are very difficult and I would suggest always doing all the review problems but he provides you with enough to get a good grade.
best teacher
Excellent professor! Very clear and concise with his lectures. Tests are a bit long for having only 50 minutes, but certainly do-able if you know the material well. He gives you plenty of free points/extra credit just for showing up, also.
I had Holovics my first semester at SIUe. He was one of my favorite professor. His teaching is very straight forward, and if you pay attention in class you will do just fine. Class was never boring. He was a really fun teacher. Definitely take Holovics if you can!
Great teacher. This is a true university level class. To do well, you have to go to class and put forth the effort. Holovics is and excellent lecturer, so pay close attention. Very helpful in and out of class during his office hours. Study, study, study.
Great Teacher. Lectures were really easy to understand. Had office hours the day before tests. online homework was helpful.
He is amazing! Lectures are not required but there are easy pop quizzes. Buy his book of powerpoint slides and practice problems. A is 85%, and 40% of the grade is easy points like workshop, online homework, and quizzes. People who had minimal or no prior chemistry struggled to keep up, but get a solid start and don't miss the easy points!
Holovics is a very knowledgable, talented professor. Tests are long and difficult, so study study study! But he is helpful, prepared, and honestly one of the best teachers I have ever had. Take his classes.
Very good at lecturing and answers questions during class. Responds to emails quickly. Tests are moderately hard, be sure to read the textbook and do practice problems in it. There is usually one long answer question in each test that was in the book and not in the "try it yourself" problems in his powerpoint slide book.
Holovics is really a great professor and I recommend taking his class. He presents the material in an organized manner and always asks to see if people have questions before moving on the to the next topic. His tests are a little on the hard side, but hey it's Chemistry! Study as you go and you will do fine.
I really enjoyed this class with Dr. Holovics! He's an easy going guy and is really nice. It's not too rough getting an A because the online homework can be done until you get a 100% and the workshop that goes along with the class makes for easy free points. The tests can be challenging but not impossible. And he has curved a few of our test.
I LOVE Dr. Holovics. I'm currently taking 121B and had him last semester for 121A. His tests are demanding and you have to know what you are doing in order to complete them on time. Pay attention to the multiple choice because they account for a lot of points. He's an EXCELLENT professor though. Very helpful and usually quick to return grades.
He's a great teacher and I learned a ton in his class but his exams are tough.(I pulled an A in 121a and prolly will get a B in 121b) Study a ton for the exams and do ALL the try it yourself problems. Also if there is a problem in the book you did in lecture but wasn't on the try it yourself for that section make sure you can still do it. Holovics is notorious for throwing you exam curve balls
Very good teacher. Wants to see his students do well.
One of the best teachers I have ever had. Chemistry is not my favorite subject, but Dr. Holovics made it very easy to learn and do well. He was always very clear in his lectures and would always work enough examples and answer any questions. His exams were challenging but not impossible. I highly recommend taking him if possible.
Fantastic teacher. Really cares about the students doing well. He makes things very easy to understand. His tests are fairly extensive but he should prepare you for everything on them.
Pretty easy professor, notes are provided with spaces for you to fill in. Exams are pretty straightforward with the exception of the multiple choice questions that are often things you haven't seen before.
Holovics was an awesome teacher! He was great at explaining most topics and always open to questions. He was also really good about help outside of class. Overall one of the best teachers I have ever had. I highly recommend him!!!
Very helpful, I wish I would have understood what he was teaching me.
Excellent power points very good teacher
Holovics is an AMAZING professor, TAKE HIM. He isn't the easiet professor out there but you learn a lot and he really cares. There are like two extra credit opportunities, so don't depend on it. He is very willing to help and is fun in lecture. The homework is a free 10 pts (online) and the quizzes are open notes 85%+ is an A. The final is CURVED
Just about as good of a professor as you could ask for. Extremely nice person, extremely good at what he does, nothing but good things to say about him.
great lecturer, made chem fun and interesting. nice guy in lecture hours, too. seemed like he really cared not just about our grade but our understanding of the material. sets students up well to continue on in chem. a real asset to siue.
By far one of the best teachers ive had here. He makes it really interesting and explain everything really well. He will take question in class and after class. Great teacher i highly recommend taking him.
One of the most helpful professors you will ever have. Just show up and spend a couple hours doing your homework and studying for tests and you will do great! He also offers occasional extra credit and curves a few tests.
Professor Holovics is one of the most helpful teachers I have had. He was always in his office when I needed him and remembered me after I was out of the class. Some of the material is difficult but he is very passionate about it and tries his best to help students understand. I would take him again!
He's a great teacher, chemistry just isn't for me. But he is good at answering questions clearly and concisely. The workshops were a little much sometimes, but helpful at other times. He did show a video clip relevant to the material about every week and a half, big plus.
Awesome class!!!! Holovics is an amazing teacher. I have a learning disability and have a very hard time concentrating in class, but I had no trouble in his class. He was always willing to help me and encourages students to visit his office if you have any question. Take his class if you have to take Chem.
Thomas Holovics was an awesome teacher! Always willing to help and gives you lots of examples in class to help the material stick. Studying is a must… but he is fantastic and gives you all of the tools to succeed
Dr. Holovics is just awesome. He's a nice guy who will explain anything that you need him to explain. I found him humorous at times. Just a really good professor and a really easy class.
Great guy with a good personality. Makes class interesting/enjoyable while teaching you at the same time
Awesome teacher! Makes it enjoyable. Watch science experiments on Ellen on Friday's sometimes. Easy if you read over your notes and do the try-it-yourself before tests. Also ask workshop leaders for their old tests to get a feel for the questions.
Fantastic professor. Chemistry can be dry at times, but Holovics keeps it interesting. The tests aren't ridiculously hard, and the homework is online. Doesn't curve exams much but offers extra credit once a semester I definitely recommend him
Professor Holovics was one of my favorite teachers here at SIUe. He really knows his stuff when it comes to Chemistry and is always there to help if you don't understand something. We watch Ellen on Fridays and there are plenty of extra credit opportunities. He really wants us to succeed. And an A is from 85 to 100. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Holovics is a great teacher if you already have some knowledge of chemistry. If you don't remember high school chemistry, this class will be extremely tough. He does, however, answer all questions and has office hours and TAs that will help.
I love chemistry and although most people loved him I didn't find his teaching styles helpful. He will help you with confusing material and always answers questions in class. Tests are very hard and long, you will barely finish them if you finish them at all. Study a lot, go to the workshop, and make sure you understand everything before the test
I LOVE Doc Holovics. He is probably the best professor I've ever had. He makes you work hard, but if you do chances are you'll do well in the class. I wish he taught organic!!
Holovics is easily the best gen chem teacher SIUE has. His lectures are great and he's a super nice guy, but his tests are extremely hard. You HAVE to read the book and study and put a lot of work into it to get an A. Make sure you're studying and going to his office hours. Also his island of hair is funny.
Holovics is a great professor, very personable. He provides fill in the blank lecture notes that follow his powerpoints. Make sure to take extra notes of what he says, those concepts do appear on exams. The tests are hard, but he provides lots of example problems & the workshops are helpful too, be sure to review those! Also, he is there to help!
He lectures right from the notes but he gives you all the notes to follow along. Homework is all online, there are pop quizzes, 4 tests and a standardized final. Quizzes aren't worth that much but tests make up for most of the total points. He gives good feedback and helps when you need it.
Dr. Holovics is one of my favorite professors on campus. During lectures, he speaks very loud and clear, elaborates on all of power point slides to get a better understanding of the material, and is always eager to answer questions. I'm also oddly attracted to him which made lectures even better. Holovics, if you ever read this - I love you.
He is an amazing professor! He really cares about the students and makes class fun and enjoyable. Buy his workbook and you will get an A. The workshops that he offers are also very helpful! He is amazing, and I wish I could take him for all of my classes. (Tests are difficult if you don't study or pay attention in class. Read the book)
Very nice guy but I found his teaching very unhelpful. He speeds through the content and I found his tests really hard. I'm a straight A student and found this class a struggle to get a B. I basically had to teach myself most everything from the book. Don't recommend him unless you are just really good at Chemistry - then you'll prob be ok.
He is a fantastic teacher. His voice can be very easy to tune out (I have problems staying awake). But other than that he is fantastic. He knows how to explain chemistry well and I am happy he teaches 121B.
Holovics is a great professor. He made everything easy to follow and to understand. His door is always open and he is more than willing to help. He makes chem fun with his funny and kind demeanor. I definitely recommend him!
I had Dr. Holovics for General Chemistry and I really enjoyed his class. Chemistry is a hard subject so expect to read and put in the time studying, but he makes lecture enjoyable. Speaks loudly, clearly, and shows fun experiments videos frequently on Fridays. His book of note outlines saves a ton of time.
Fantastic teacher, helps students with anything they need. The tests are hard, and you have to study for them, but there are more than plenty of tools given to you that you can use to study. Genuinely cares about his students and their performance. Honestly probably the best teacher SIUe has to offer
Holovics is easily one of best teachers for straight out of high school transitioning. He does well in preparing students for his tests and when things go wrong (projector breaks, wrong grades) he has easy work arounds that make the class more interesting or fair. I don't know anybody who doesn't enjoy taking class with him.
Holovics teaches a tough course very well. He is very clear and detailed but not boring. He is a very skilled professor!
very good professor. makes chemistry fun. tough course but does give extra credit.
Holovics is definitely the best teacher that I have ever had. He wants nothing other than to see people succeed so he gives atleast one extra credit opportunity each semester. His lectures are super organized and beneficial.
Holovics is the best chem teacher I've ever had, after having about three different ones at SIUE alone. Chem is a hard class, but if you pay attention to Holovics, he will explain everything, and will always be willing to help. If you apply yourself, you WILL learn Chemistry. He's also got a good sense of humor, and gives extra credit opportunities
he is a good teacher but just was not for me he knows his stuff and runs through it so fast i was always lost reason why I'm retaking it now with dr shaw and i hav an A
His lectures are decent but it's really easy to get distracted. The workshops help a ton!! That's where you actually learn how to do the problems so take that seriously. I've never been to his office hours, but I know he'd be more than willing to help if you ask! Study hard and you will be fine
Holovics is an amazing professor. He really cares about making sure his students really understand what is going on. The workshops really help if you take them seriously. However, if you don't pay attention in class, you won't do well on the tests. He also gives pop quizzes so it's important to stay on top of the topics being discussed.
You have to be ready to do the work but he makes this chemistry class a lot easier than what it could be
Dr. Holovics is one of my favorite professors. He genuinely cares about his students. His exams are tough, but only because he wants to prepare you for your future Chemistry classes. Be sure you double check your work before you turn in your exam because a mistake in a calculation can really hurt you. He is hilarious and his door is always open.
Take Holovics for first-year Chemistry. He has amazing lectures and he is very reasonable. He makes sure that every student understands the material.
The "Red Book" is very helpful, pay attention in class and you will do fine.
Homework is very long and hard. assignments were hard due to lecture sometimes moving so slow. Don't go to workshops, do homework, or miss pop quizzes you won't pass. Very tough grader on exams doesn't start curving grades til November (or the last 3/4 exams)
If you are midly intelligent in this mans class you will at least get a B
Chem is a hard class, so you do have to spend a lot of time outside of class if you want to pass. Holovics does a great job at explaining the material. He answers any questions you have. I started the class with a D, but went to his office hours and he helped me bring it up to an A in the end. The final is curved a ton so don't worry about that.
Professor Holovics makes a great chemistry professor. He is phenomenal at his job. Most of the work we did was online. As long as you practice problems on your own and spend a little bit of time studying each day, you are set to pass. He is kind enough to give a little bit extra credit to everyone at a certain point in the semester.
Good instructor, however he boasts about giving partial credit, but then makes 1 question on the test worth 20 pts but if you get it right up until the end and then miscount the significant figures he counts it wrong and only gives you maybe 1 point for the 20 point problem that you basically got right. He knows his stuff, but he grades to hard.
If you have the chance to take him, do it, because there is no one better for gen chem.
If you're taking CHEM121A/B there is no one better than Holovics.
No better professor at SIUE for 121. Thorough, entertaining, plays awesome clips. Very helpful. Maybe not as engaging, but he really is helpful. Stand up guy.
I came to college hating and not understanding chemistry at all. He made me feel prepared for my next few years as a Biochem major. I am definitely taking him again next semester. He goes over sample problems in class, has tons of study materials for exams, and the class is structured very well overall. He is very nice and will always help you.
I've never met a man like tommy. When I came into the class I was shaking in my boots fearing that this professor would be cold and uninformative. Oh how I was mistaken. This man was born to teach Chem. His voice echoes around the theater of peck hall filling all of his students hearts with warmth. Overall great dude and an even better fisherman.
Great, great guy. Fairly engaging, and very nice. The tests are easy, and the quizzes... well, you get your notes. Great guy.
This dude right here. I went from having a high school chem teacher telling me I was a moron, to one of the most helpful and caring teachers I've ever had. It's clear that he legitimately cares about his students and their success. I went from absolutely hating chemistry to majoring in Biochem, and I have him and Miller to thank for it.
Holovics is great professor. He gives a good amount of homework that is due online, but you can extra credit on it so it helps your grade out. The tests are pretty hard. You will not due well on his exams class if you do not spend time a decent time studying. He gives pop quizzes, but you can use your notes on them.
I switched my major from the social sciences to the natural sciences and was terrified to make the transition, but Dr. Holovics made this course very easy to understand especially for someone with minimal background knowledge. It takes work for an A, but if you take good notes in lectures and read the chapters it is more than possible.
This class was insanely tough. The material was not all that hard if you studied and payed attention in class but the tests were ridiculous. I do not recommend taking Dr. Holovics for chem 121a especially as a freshman adjusting to college.
Great guy but the tests were extremely hard, the school tutors couldn't even help me with my homework
Holovics is an amazing professor. There is a lot of homework, but it is only meant to help your grade. There are pop quizzes during class so it is important to attend every lecture, but you are allowed to use your notes on the quizzes. The tests are challenging, but if you can get an old test it has similar material.
Prof. Holovics is a great professor. He is willing to work with you ONLY if he sees that you are doing your part to understand it. He can be your best friend if you listen to him and apply his nmemonic devices to your work! GOD bless!! I got a B out of CHEM 121a and I got an A out of CHEM 121b.
Quite a bit of homework but you get many chances. Good teacher. Explains well. Lecture is boring but very helpful so listen and fill out the chem book.
Lots of homework, but you can guess multiple times and still receive full credit. Very good at teaching, but pretty hard exams.
Great professor. Take him if you get the chance. Super helpful and gives plenty of opportunity to succeed.
Tom is an absolute GOAT. The man makes everything you need to do clear: 6 quizzes, one of which is extra credit, a test every few weeks, and an A is an 85, even though you could probably get the usual 90. His lectures give you all the info you need for tests, and he is surprisingly funny. Great guy, would absolutely recommend him
He is the best teacher you will have during your gen eds courses. He loves his job and wants you to succeed. He gives plenty of extra credit on homework assignments and occasionally curves exams, and even gives you study guides. I have never heard a single complaint about him.
Great guy
He was amazing. His class is hard, but you definitely retain all of the information and he makes it fun. We watch Ellen DeGeneres on Fridays and it makes up for all of the hard material - kind of.
Really nice guy. He gives lots of materials for practice, like reviews, try it yourself worksheets, and white board videos. He explains everything very well.
He's awesome
What can be said about him that hasn't? The class isn't the EASIEST but it also wasn't the hardest. Grading was pretty clear from the start, and he will do what he can to help. 121B is definitely harder than 121A, but I still wouldn't compare it to anything like Orgo and having Holovics is still the highlight of my education
One of THE best professors I have taken at the college level. He is extremely caring and does explain the material very well. He is super clear on how grading goes and although he does not take attendance, I recommend to show up to every. single. class because he does give pop quizzes. If you show up to all of them, he drops the lowest. Love him!
Hands down one of the best teachers I've had in college so far. By no means an easy class to take, but Dr. Holovics teaches well and will set you up with everything you need to succeed. He's very devoted to teaching chemistry as an experience rather than just another course to take as well. I honestly recommend him before any other teacher.
Great teacher! Explains topics very clearly and gives lots of practice problems
Holovics was a great professor with everything being completely online. Take advantage of the supplemental instruction and workshops in his class. As long as you do everything in the class you should do well.
Dr. Holovics is one of my favorite professors at SIUE. Even though his class was online when I took it, I still felt that he was there to respond to any questions or concerns I had. I felt that all of his homework, exams, and quizzes were all reasonable and complimented what was taught in class very well.
I mentioned I did not like the online videos he required to be watched because the video just stopped and asked a question on what I just learned. I was focusing on what was going to be the next question instead of focusing on what I need to learned. when I notified him he wasnt willing to help me and rated me as a poor preforming student..
I took Chem 2 online async with Holovics and it really wasnt too bad. All exams were online through respondus, quizzes are WAY harder than tests, and homework takes forever but isnt very difficult. Overall if you want a decent grade and are scared of chem, then take Holovics.
Great prof! He explained material well! He makes his own book that u take notes in, which is v helpful. The hw take 4EVER, so start them early. Grades: hw, quizzes, & exams. His lectures are v helpful. Def go to SI! It's a great place to practice what u learn! If u watch lectures and go to SI, u should do well! He is happy to help in office hours
I had lab asynchronous. It was fairly difficult, but the TA was so helpful! Def go to the TA office hours! W/o them I wouldnt have done well! Prof Holovics explains things well, but it's still kind of hard. Grades: pre-labs (3 tries), watching lab vid, and post-labs. He is happy to help in office hours, too! It would take me about 4-8 hrs a week.
Dr. Holovics organized our lectures very well and gave a clear layout on how to manage the daily amount of work one should do. Also, he replies promptly to your emails and gives good feedback. Most of his lectures are easy to understand and are just long enough to know enough information but short enough to keep you engaged. Would recommend.
Fill in the blank notes are easy but caused me to absorb the material less. Assignments are about every 2 weeks but take over 2 hours, so start ASAP. Uses LockDown Browser. Provides most formulas on quizzes and exams. He has a friendly intro on each lecture video.
My favorite professor by far.
Dr. Holovics is a solid choice for this course. He makes all of the material understandable, and he replies to emails promptly.
Loved having Dr. Holovivcs for 121A online. Gives very good feedback and is very accessible throughout the day. The lecture videos were spread out so no one day felt overwhelming and the HW is very helpful with instant feedback! Overall great professor!
Mr. Holovics makes material very easy to understand even when online. Extra credit for attending SI sessions. Homework really helps understand material. Really good choice when taking CHEM 121 A or B.
Best professor Ive had so far!
I had him asynchronous online for my first semester only because of covid so all of his lectures were videos with questions. All I say is pay attention, know the basics, and do your best in this class because the next section is impossible.
You can tell he likes this subject. He actually teaches the material and helps you learn instead of just memorizing it. There is a decent bit of homework, but it helps commit what we learned to long-term memory. His exams are easy if you pay attention in class and get the homework done. He also offers a lot of study material outside of graded work.
Can definitely tell that he knows and cares for what he is teaching. Highly recommend taking one of his courses
Dr. Holovics is a great professor, and I am excited to have him again for 121B.
Holovics is awesome and it's clear he knows his stuff and is passionate about teaching gen chem. There's textbook and he suggests you read it, but I never did. He doesn't take attendance, but you really need to get the notes to do well, and he does a few open note pop quizzes. You get homework a couple times per week, but the grading is super easy.
he is a great professor.
Great at explaining things, doesn't rush topics or take things too slowly, good sense of humor. He really just knows how to run a class and make sure that everybody comes out learning something every day. Would absolutely take him again for every class I can!
Great professor, would 100% take again. Has a really good sense of humor that makes the lecture more lighthearted and chill. SI's grade exams and can be harsh but Professor Holovics is always willing to meet and work out things you think were graded too harshly. Really down to earth and personable
You are required to buy a note packet which contains all notes and PLTL worksheets. Very organized professor and is willing to help when needed. Gives extra credit for attending Supplemental Instruction. Quizzes are given at random so I recommend attending class everyday. Overall a great professor and would take his class again.
Dr. Holovics made chemistry super interesting and had the class organized in a manner that helped my comprehension of the material. Having guided notes really made it easy to follow along
He's the man. I loved gen chem 1 & 2. Come to lecture, do the homework, and study with others!
As a freshman, Holovics made me see that not all professors will be strict and unapproachable. He truly cared for his students and it reflected in his feedback and lectures. Probably one of the best professors here, I definitely recommend him. As long as you study and put forth the effort you will do well in his class. Genuinely a kind, funny guy.

One of the best Professors (and teacher) I've ever had. He goes through material thoroughly and gives a lot of examples, is ALWAYS willing to talk to students, and is genuinely passionate about what he teaches. His exams are difficult but you always learn everything on them. He's very funny and always looks like he's having fun giving lectures.
For being a student that has been out of school for 6 years, Professor Holovics made re-learning Chemistry very accessible! Provides more than enough material to ensure students success throughout the course. He also cares about how students are doing and is willing to help when/where needed if reached out to.
Holovics is the best professor you'll ever have. He explains difficult material well, and is very passionate about what he is teaching. Between SI, workshops, study modules, and exam reviews, there's no reason someone shouldn't do well in this course. It's a pretty demanding course, but feasible because Holovics is so good at what he does.
Holovics was by far the best and my favorite professor I had freshman year! As long as you pay attention in class, complete your homework, and study for his exams... they are not difficult. Attendance is not mandatory, but there are a few open note pop quizzes, so it is better to attend class every day. He is not a waste of your time!
Lectures were inciteful; however, sometimes he wouldn't really go in extensive detail about the material rather than just providing the definition and a visual. This causes you to do lots of work on your own, like SI, reading the book, and reviewing old notes/homework which can get stressful before each exam. He curves and is funny tho!
Best professor ever!! He clearly loves chemistry and is passionate about teaching it. He is always willing to answer questions or help in any way. No better professor than Thomas.
Amazing teacher and seems to actually care for his students and keeping up with their progress. Definitely recommend to anyone.
He explains very weirdly, he makes the marital harder than what it is. His meeting hours are from 9:30am-10:30am no other times if you are a freshman with 8am 9am or even 10am your out of luck. He also lies about what's going to be on the exam for no reason. Lastly if your in honors SI will never be a time you can get to. SI don't help much
GO TO SI (gives you extra credit)!! He was very enthusiastic and clearly outlined what he expected you to know on the tests. An 85% is an A. I never used the book and just relied on the notes. Will be taking him for chem 2 next semester also! Sometimes the way he explained things was confusing, so studying on your own is beneficial also!
If you want to do good in this class you need Holovics as a professor.
Literally the best prof at SIUE no doubt. He used to do pop quizzes I heard but this year he used a website form which was so much better bc you just get points for it. He gives you everything you need to have an A tbh so if you put in effort and work and if he sees how much youre trying you get rewarded for it. He's awesome I will miss him a lot!!
Such a king he literally sets you up for success. My GOAT bc he gives extra credit if you go to SI (go every day your grade will go up a lot). So nice, funny, caring. 10/10 recommend would take him again any time for any class. The grade is already curved you get a B if you're at a 75 even so if you do bad it's on you frl. An icon + legend.
Dr. Holovics is a very good professor. He explains very clearly what is expected on each exam. Practice problems are provided, and if you go to SI, he will give you extra credit at the end of the semester. If you are able to take him, I highly recommend.
Did everything he could to ensure the class would succeed. Homework 2-3 times a week but there were three attempts available. An 85% is an A. Just an all-around great professor that really cared.
Holovics has fair grading criteria, great lectures, and is a caring professor. If you want to do well in general chemistry, he is the professor you need.
Although Holovics did not teach the chemistry lab, he would always be sure to make announcements to the class if there was something important going on in the lab that week. He seemed to be very involved, and I appreciate his awareness of the class.
Professor Holovics was one of the best teachers that I was given the pleasure of having. He is the go-to professor for anything you need elaborated in the class. Ask any questions in class, he will answer them to the best of his ability. If there's something you need, he will provide it for you. Just know that the notes are fill-in-the-blank :)
Loved him! Great, clearly tells you what he wants you to know. Sometimes his tests had random questions but overall a good teacher. I got an A in gen chem 1 and 2 w/o studying a whole lot. Its very calculational/formula heavy but all easy, basic math. go to SI to get extra credit!!
Holovics class was so easy to learn in with the notes. The exams are not super difficult if you put a little work into it. Gives lots of extra credit if you go to lectures and SI
He teaches well
Prof. Holovics is good. My issue was with the course itself. 5 days a week, lectures and workshops and they want you to go to SI outside of that. If you have responsibilities outside of school like I do, it can be tough. For a general course, this seemed to go into DEPTH. 50 minutes for a 5-page exam was not enough for me. Did not enjoy this course
Still upset 6 months later that my 89.75% in the lab was not rounded to an A when I attended every lab and did not skip to use it as my dropped. Contradicted himself when he said he would certainly round up for students, but apparently not for me I must be horrible.
I came into general chemistry with absolutely zero background in any chemistry. I completely failed the first exam and ended with an A. He is very well spoken in lectures, he knows what he's teaching, and he's formulated a great course. He teaches what you need for the final which is difficult in and of itself. I recommend Dr. Holovics to anyone!
Clearly knows what he's talking about and explains it really well. By far my favorite teacher at the school, can't wait to have him next semester. Notes are fill in the blank and there are plenty of chances for extra credit. Gives you formulas and constants on exams so you don't need to need to worry about memorizing them. Great person and teacher.
