Hu is NOT a good teacher. On top of the language barrier, he is not thorough, does not encourage questions, and doesn't provide solutions to his problem sets. If you are desperate for Stats, then you may as well try your luck.
He is one of the best instructors in the state of California.
Mr. Hu might not be clear because of his accent but he is extremely helpful. He would dedicate all his time for the student. He would even let student go to his house and study. Who ever made that dumb comment about Mr. Hu is probably one of those lazy students who dont even try and expects an A.
its VEry hard to understand him, but he does help u after or before class. so study hard suckers!
He is extremely helpful. He dedicates a lot of his extra time to his students. He gives you practice exams a couple of days before the real test and is very approachable. He does have an accent but he repeats everything so that his students can understand. I really enjoyed his class. He is a great teacher.
His tests are extremely difficult. I don't like his attitude. Believe me, you will have to drop his class sooner or later 'cause his tests are very very hard.
I don't understand his lectures. You can't ask questions during the lectures. He doensn't have office, which makes students harder to approach him, and ask questions.
He one of the best professors at ccsf. i have never gotten an A in math, but ended up getting an A in his summer course. He is so nice and helpful. He really cares about his students. He is open to answering any question and even stays after class to help. His lectures are so organized and clear. his exams are so easy. You can use a cheat sheet.
He's the most devoted instructor I've known. He offers extra extra hours to help his students. His MATHEMATICAL TEACHING is very clear. If you're good at math, his class is so easy, you just need a little time to study. Otherwise, you'll struggle to past.
he doesnt take any attence, he begins lecture once class begin and u will only need to take note during class.he gives quiz evey week and the quiz is same hw questions. his test is very easy, u can use a cheat sheet in any size. and he like to help students a lot.
He is a Chinese teacher I like him so much because I understand what is he talking about. When I after class, I can ask him the questions that I can use Chinese to ask him. It's so cool for me. I recommand the students to take his classes.
The most helpful teacher I've ever had! He's willing to spend a lot of extra time on students. His lecture is kind of restricted to the textbook. His exams are neither too hard nor too easy. That's good for B or C students, but it doesn't help distingush A students. So know who u r before taking him. Besides, prepare to bear with his accent!
thomas haitang hu is a nut case. he loves statistics. and he also loves giving very difficult homework and tests. he's very clear in class and writes all the notes you need on the board, but at times throws weird curve balls like formulas you haven't used since beginning algebra. if you don't mind hard work, his class is really good.
Don't take his class. You will have to drop later. His tests are super hard. It was very hard for me to understand his lectures.
He is ALWAYS willing to help, but you will have to work your a$$ off in this class. He is one tough cookie...you will have to EARN your grade from him.
He is not very helpful and runs through things to fast. He approached Algebra in a different way that confused me. I became lost so I had to drop the class. I would take another teacher, than him.
He's always available for help. He offers extra hours to help his students! great! his lectures/materials are clear, well organized! however, his class is so hard, especially his hand-out homework. lots of homework!
He is an easy teacher.
This "pure math" nerd has superb math skills but lacks command of English and does not know the art of teaching. He tries to eliminate students by giving brutally hard quizzes & tests, & he keeps them under continual stress by excessive homework. Avoiding word problems, he makes little effort to connect calculus to physics, chemistry or astronomy.
he definitely loves probability! he gives tons of homework hand-outs, and those are really hard! however, he's a very generous grader. prof. Hu is the most devoted teacher i've known.
He has the thickest chinese accent of all the teacher ive had. Forget asking him any complicated question because he would not understand you one bit
He is funny n nice.i took summer class, each week he gave a mini quiz which from the HW, only 4 testes we had. you onlu needa study the HW, then i am sure you will got wat u want. but i m too lazy. n have to be nice to him!!
Mr. Hu is clear in presenting material, but his accent can be a barrier if you don't speak Cantonese or Mandarin. He explains everything all the way out which is needed sometimes. You will bust your tail for him but you will learn and if you make the effort, he will help you. Don't think you waltz in there and get an A. You have to earn it from Hu.
Accent makes things a little hard to understand at first but he is a funny guy. This is a tough class with daily hw and quizzes but it all pays off in the end. He really wants you to pass and is very helpful!
If you say Mr. Hu isn't helpful, you obviously either didn't have him for a teacher or don't pay attention. He always says anyone is welcome to join his study groups in the cafe. Unless he is outside smoking a cigarette, he will give you his undivided attention. Plus he writes everything he says on the baord if you can't understand his accent.
He is best teacher i've had so far. He spend a lot of time helping students and he respect his students and shows he really care about them. The subject is difficult, and his accent is hard to understand sometimes, but if you pay attention and ask him to help you, you shall see that's rewarding.
A good, funny, and helpful guy. He is definitely willing to go the extra mile to help you out. But oh my GOD, this guy has the thickest accent i've ever heard. He zooms through his lectures quicker than I've seen any professor do. The guy erases the notes he has up on the board faster than anyone I've seen. Sit up front and stay on top of it.
Mr. Hu is LMAO FUNNY. He might be the only teacher anywhere that draws on himself with chalk to make a point. If you need help go to his cafe sessions on Tu/Th before class. He'll help you. He moves very fast so you have to be on your toes. His accent's strong so I STRESS to write everything down verbatim and review it later. You'll be ok if you do
Yes Hu is one of the harder teachers at ccsf. Yes his accent is tough. Yes he gives lots of work. But YES Hu is absolutely the most helpful professor and will make time to help you. And yes as the last person said, if you get his jokes he can pretty darn funny. He has a alot of energy. I've never seen anyone erase a board with such enthusiasm.
mr WHO is really nice. he writes everything on the board. for our final he let us drop whatever tests u want, but the final will be worth more. he doesn't collect hw but, quizzes practically everyday exactly from the hw. no curves. his grades are based on a point system out of 100. hes really cool guy but pretty hard unless you know your stuff
I took Hu as a prereq to get into b-school. You have no idea how helpful Hu is until you?ve been stuck w/a prof that refuses to explain things. His café sessions are a gift for people who struggle with math concepts. You will never have a prof more helpful while in college, esp a 4yr sch. Appreciate his helpfulness. And yes, he is pretty funny. :)
Mr. Hu is helpful teacher but Sometimes you cant understand him bec he is chinese. But He is a considerate teacher. When it comes in the test it is more harder than the way he teach but a good thing you have a cheat sheet.
Took him in the summer. Was not clear on explaining. gave many problems to do within 24hrs with a quiz everyday. he allowed people to cheat even when some people told him. He made the class frustrating and drove people crazy. take him if you don't want to learn anything!
Hu has lots of energy. I think he eats espresso beans for meals and washes them down with Red Bull. But seriously, several people already said this but it bears repeating. Mr. Hu is NOT easy but he's probably the most helpful professor you'll ever have. He'll work and work with you. And he's pretty funny too. his accent can be tough so take notes.
His lectures are very organized. Even if you don't follow the material, it will make sense upon further rereading. He constantly gives "review math" by including "recall this" in his lectures. You learn/relearn/refresh material from trig/algebra/early calculus. More difficult/even # Homework solutions are posted on line. He tutors Mon/Wed/Sat.
He is nice but really TOUGH!!! be prepared of undergoing frustration in his class. Only take his class if you are math genius and you think math is piece of cake. Otherwise, don't even bother to think about taking his class. If you want to learn something , go for others. If you want a good grade, go for others. Not recommend him anyways:(
I agree that Hu is not easy, and the accent is tough, but he has study sessions each week and invites every student. If you don't pass his class, that's on YOU, because Mr. Hu will help everyone that requests it. If math is not your forte (like me), GO TO HIS STUDY SESSIONS. In short: not easy, but EXTREMELY HELPFUL and generous with his time.
I passed Stats but struggled a little. It's hard to understand him because of his thick accent, but he is a really nice guy and is helpful. He's also very committed to his work. Hmk every night but he doesn't collect. He also gives a short quiz before class ends to see who did the hmwk. If you're going to take his class, prepare to work hard!
There was a bit of a language barrier, but he put out a great effort. Calculus is a little rough to begin with so I expected a challenge. I would recommend his class to anyone.
Summer 110A. Mr.Hu is one of my favorite instructors in mathematics. His teaching covers with enthusiasm. He offers much more help compared to other teacher. Quiz is straight from homework. Midterm is very challenging because the computation is tedious. Final converges to "challenging? since it is comprehensive. I did well!! STRONGLY RECOMMENDED
Absolutely a good guy!!!
Hard to understand but by far one of the best math teachers I've ever had! He is always available for extra assistance. He's better than the math lab because he will always offer one on one teaching when you ask. He also engages students and makes class entertaining and fun while learning a difficult subject. TAKE HIM
I think he is nice, but he tells us to study on certain pages and the math test is harder then what we studied. I just warn you that when he gives you review problems.. do the other ones that are harder.. because he makes it double for the test..i went to the math lab but it did not matter because it still was harder for the test..
Mr. Hu is one of the best math instructors I've had the privilege of being a student to. He is funny, kind, and bends over backwards to make himself available to students, and to give them resources to help them with tough material. Quizzes and tests are sensible and based on homework and stuff we've covered in class.
Hands down for Prof. Hu! I took his class for summer school. Even though it was a month summer session, he gives out quizzes everyday but would help us on our quizzes and homework if we ask for help, half paper note on tests, and open notes for the final. Overall, Prof. Hu is a helpful teacher!
BEST MATH TEACHER EVER!! Mr Hu explains things crystal clear, he is sooo willing to help outside class! he assigns homework a lot every lesson, but this is how you should learn math! practice! 100% recommend him!
His accent is very heavy, but over the course of the semester it becomes easy to understand. There is a quiz every week based on the homework, which helps in preparing for the exams. However, a lot of his in class examples are different from the actual problems he gives on you on exams. If you get confused, definitely go to his office hours.
EASY: No, but you'll be fine if you work and pay attention. HELP: 5-STARS PLUS! I've never known any professor so willing to help students so Hu's a superstar to me! CLARITY: Don't know how to answer - accent may be tough at first but Hu's crystal clear for expectations. INTEREST: more in other classes, but his enthusiasm makes class light and fun.
It looks like a lot of what I'm going to say has already been said. Mr. Hu has a strong accent but you will learn to understand him during the semester. I'd definitely take notes and review on your own time. Not easy, but will help anyone. SO freaking helpful! You will not find a prof more dedicated to helping you succeed. 100% thumbs up for Hu!
Fall 2013 night class. He speak Cantonese, Mandarin, English and post solutions online. His notes are organize. He don't check homework, but give you quiz(total value 30% final grade) from homework problems. you could use a formula paper in exam.Final exam is open book, notes, so print all solutions from his final review and at least read them once.
I took Prof. Hu Summer '14. He is a great teacher. Very willing to help. Gives tons of examples during the lecture. He does have an accent, but you get used to it. Very kind and nice teacher. He gives tons of HW, but that's how you learn math anyway. Quizes everyday, Mon,Wed,Fri were group, Tue,Thu were individual. On test you can bring cheat sheet
On test you can bring small note.
Amazing teacher!!!!!!!!
One of the best math 80 teachers!! He assigns homework but it is similar to what will be on the test. He sets you up for success in his class. He may have a thick accent but he writes everything on the board so you have no reason not to understand. He made coming to class enjoyable with his sense of humor and funny personality!
This class was really difficult. I found a lot of his lectures hard to comprehend because he doesn't really go in depth with step by step, concise directions. He's a nice guy but I think this class is better suited for someone that already knows a bit about statistics or is generally very good at math.
Helpful helpful helpful! This is the guy you want if you are fearing math. I was dreading math but Hu tells you on Day 1 that he has study sessions. Saved my tail! It doesn't mean he's easy. It's college math: it's not supposed to be. But in the study sessions he works 1on1 with you til you get it. And he's very funny too! He makes class enjoyable.
You will learn a lot from his class
If you are bad at math just do not take his class at all. He is a nice guy, tries to be funny and joke around. But as a professor he is just horrible. he cannot speak English properly, he knows math, just cant explain it. He does not like confrontation either, if you talk to him about something he will take it personal and make your life hell.
This dude moves super fast, has a thick accent, and has a grading scale which means its hard for you to improve your grade if you're not one of the smart people. Bad teacher, hard to understand. Lucky that I was decent enough at math to pass
Mr. Hu is a very nice guy, but he's also one of the most difficult math professors I've ever had. I struggled to earn a C, but Hu is very well organized and you can learn a lot from his lectures. Not recommended for the faint of heart but if you identify as a math geek and like a challenge then this is the guy for you.
Mr Hu would take time to explain the more subtle points of Calculus I. I was repeating this class for the third time with respectable grades previously. Mr Hu would make jokes about "stupid math majors". And the sci fi show Dr Who. Mr Hu had class study groups prior to tests/finals. I wish I had better study skills to retain learning I will review
Mr. Hu is a great professor and can be quite humorous! I took him for both Math 40 & 60. He takes attendance by use of daily quizzes and these will add up, so come to class! We did massive amounts of homework especially during the summer but it was always out of the book and not online :) ! His exams can be tough so prepare yourself by studying!
Great teacher in CCSF. He's very funny, and his logic is very clear. This teacher really get you ready for math 110B and math 110C.
Has a very thick accent, but all his notes and examples he puts on the board are clear and straight forward. Very useful for Math 60. Daily lectures help tremendously with the HW. DO the HW to help pass the quiz the next day. Quizzes are daily. He will go over anything people have trouble with. Grades on a curve.
He makes it clear on the first day what he expects from the class. He grades by how well you do compared to the class. He has a very thick accent and makes jokes about math majors and being from China. You will hear the word "lousy" and "stupid" everyday. He uses it to describe everything. He goes super fast and you need to study outside of class.
Took Mr. Hu's summer school course. He was awesome! Explains everything in detail. He is well organized and goes over things that way you definitely absorb the information. I would take him again!
He will teach you outside the box and if you attend his class everyday and put some work, I guarantee you will be ready for your next math class.
No exaggeration when I say Mr Hu is one of the best teachers I've had. Calc3 is not easy and it covers many topics, yet I was able to work the hw based almost entirely on what I learned in lecture. He's engaging, caring, hilarious, and approachable. He makes himself available outside of class and is responsive to email/phone. He is rooting for you
Professor Hu lectures in an understanding matter; writes all the steps to the problem. Daily homework that is optional. It is to your benefit to do the homework. Three quizzes per week and the problems are from the homework. Fair and easy grading system. Recommended to do the homework. Tells you what is on the test and is similar to the homework
Quirky funny guy but absolutely terrible teacher. Sure, there's his dense accent which already makes it difficult to know if he's even speaking English. But that aside, he is very very bad at conveying the language of math itself he simply will work out a problem on the board rapidly but not necessarily go into the process of what steps to take
(summer) I believe one can mediocrely pass this class because he genuinely wants to see you move on and succeed. However, for this class to be a success for you: you need to attend every class, take great notes and follow along, you need to do your homework, you need to put effort into understanding the concepts outside of class. He knows whats up!
I put all my effort into understanding the information did not do any homework because there was not point if I understood the subjects he went over.. Mr Hu was hilarious and cares about his students as long as you put forth effort to try to understand the material . If I had to take any math at CCSF Id want Mr Hu to be my teacher again.
Mr Hu is the teacher that whipped me into shape. He wasnt an easy teacher but he was the one that made me good at math. Fantastic guy.
Mr. Hu is probably the best math teacher I ever had. he does a lot of lectures and notes and goes step by step with how to do the problem. There are quizzes everyday based on the homework. Homework is optional but you should do it dor the practice but also because quizzes are based off problems on the homework. Tests every week as well.
He is a professor that grades on a curve, only 45% of people get an A or B, the rest get their gpa ruined by a C, D, or F. H.W is ungraded, but his tests contain so many trick problems that after briefly brushing up on the topics, it doesnt really matter how much you study, because youll get snared by the trick problems.
Very funny. Has a thick accent but fine. Overall good
The professor doesn't speak english. When asked to organize scribbles on board, gets into fights with students. Refuses to tell students what homework is required for study. University basically shielded him from being sued for flagrantly violating Title V requirements.
Mr Hu is one of my favorite professors, and is the reason I like math. His lectures are dense but organized providing lots of examples. HW is optional but weekly quizzes are based on it. Do the work and ask for help at office hours, and you will learn a lot in his class. I am currently also taking his online Trig class! Very laid back & funny prof!
Mr. Hu is better than most professors in the UC/CSU system. His style helps you understand the material. As long as you pay attention in class, and do the homework, which honestly doesn't take that long you'll probably be in A-B range. Best part is how I'm still using the notes from his class at UC Davis because the teachers aren't as good here.
Do NOT take his courses online. The only support he provides is his personal lecture notes. He has not translated his course into an online format. He is putting no effort into doing so. You learn as much on your own as possible, and if that can work for you, go for it, but watch out.
Refuses to teach remotely. Doesn't give any useful feedback if you email him with questions. The only graded work are weekly make-or-break quizzes and two exams with a final exam(worth very few points). The entire class is curved, so your grade is pretty much set by how well everyone else does. Very stressful until he gave a super easy final exam.
Terrible teacher.... There is a big difference between understanding the material and being able to teach your students that material. Professor Hu doesn't know how to teach even though he understands Calculus. He has no idea how to make sure you are learning the material, he just does math problems on the whiteboard and hopes you understand.
Thomas is super cool and willing to help if you have any questions. Material is difficult and requires lots of studying outside of class. Take notes, ask questions, practice calc every single day and you'll be alright !!!
Very hard for me,and you need to study hard to pass this class
This class was very hard because he doesn't explain homework, quizzes, tests and only posts the homework answers online. He mostly fools around and makes weird jokes. Out of all my classes this is the hardest one. At the end of every class there is a quiz thats based off of pervious lectures and homework. Quizzes and test are open notes.
Mr. Hu is probably one of my favorite professors I've had. Quizzes and final are open notes. Tests you get to use a cheat sheet. He assigns HW but we don't turn it in; he usually has the answers for the HW above the actual problems and questions can reappear from the HW onto the quizzes/tests. He's super goofy and understanding, would take again!
He is a teacher that works very hard. I personally find his lectures easy to follow along and like the flow of the class, however he can be a bit fast and hard to understand of some of the things he says because of his accent. If you put in the effort in the homework and daily quiz's you'll succeed in his class
Professor Hu is one of the best in the business. His lectures are very understanding for those who don't know much about probability and stats. If you do the homework, the quiz will feel quite easy for you. Quizzes and final are open-notes. For midterms and tests, you get to have one white sheet. His accent is a bit strong but its doable. I got anA
It was hard to understand him as he has an accent so as he was lecturing it was hard to follow. During lectures, he goes at a fast pace which makes it hard to keep up as well.
Grade is based on quizzes (every class) and tests (3 or 4?); HW (15-ish problems each section) is optional but quizzes are based on it. He has an accent but writes everything he says on the board. Solid lectures but not great at answering questions. Grade is curved but for MATH110A it doesn't help as many people are retaking the class and acing it.
Professor Hu has wide management of Mathematics and Calculus theory. He deeply knows what he's teaching. His accent is thick, so it takes a minute to get him at a 100%. Besides that, he writes everything on the board, gives open-note quizzes, and has a curve-grading system (if taking his class, make sure the entire class gets fair results)
He is a good teacher and knows what he is talking about and is very open to questions and being reasonable. However, sometimes his accent is hard to understand.
I checked my grade just after it became available at semester's end. His grading scheme was straightforward. I computed that I was on the border of B and A, after finding out my final exam score. My grade was listed as C. I immediately called him at his office to review my grade. He quickly changed it to B. It was interesting that I had to do that.
Not a good teacher. He doesn't know how to teach even though he understands calculus. He has no idea how to make sure you are learning. He just writes theorem proofs on the board, briefly explains, & expects you to understand. You & tutors teach yourself. If you're not prepared for that arrangement beforehand, it results in unnecessary extra work.
Shows us the how without the why. VERY available to talk to. Taught different subchapter per day. hw is ungraded, odd number problems from our text that will be reflected on next-day-quiz everyday. 3 tests (lowest one dropped), last test was open notes; 1st 2 were open-formula. mandatory final that was open note. Entire grade is based on curve
Very dedicated, but I dont get much from the class, and make sure that you can understand his strong accent. There is nothing wrong with that, but in terms of grasping concepts, you need to fully understand what he say.
Quizzes on things you were just taught and you have 20 minutes which is completely unfair. otherwise, lets you use notes and formula sheets but wasted time showing you the long way for ten minutes then saying don't do it this way do it the shorter way be prepared to self teach before coming in class
Professor Hu will help you in the fundamentals of trigonometry through many quizzes, but might leave it to you to get creative & intuitive for doing more abstract problems on the 3 tests. Takes long, complex thought processes, ask for help in the middle of them. This kind of experience might be good prep for Calculus.
Professor Hu is an alright professor. He's very nice, but hard to understand as he has a heavy accent. Because of that and the class being challenging, I wouldn't take him unless necessary. You will most likely have to teach yourself the material, as it's difficult to understand what he says and writes on the board. Quizzes after every class btw.
It's a math class so it's expected to be harder then normal. That being said Mr Hu has good policies that help you. All the tests are open note, and the quizzes you have everyday are just maybe 1-3 problems, and at least for Math 80 (stats) you could work with other people, so it helps. He also drops your lowest test score. TLDR put effort = Pass
One you get past the accent, he's amazing!
