JERK! Not helpful or friendly at ALL.
Wears the same green vest everyday. Teaches course in a round-about way. Material is easier if you teach it to yourself. He is not helpful at all.
math's a pain in the neck, but he seems to enjoy this subject. he did a good job.
I'm a big math dummy and I passed with a B+. When I missed the final he let me take it later on even though the final was on the last day of exams. He obviously digs math. I thought he was almost too nice to most of the people in my class.
he is a good teacher, i don't know what everyone is complaining about. he writes all of the notes on the board. take notes, and they will greatly help you with your hw. just make sure he doesn't give you an inaccurate grade. not student friendly.
Dont do it. (Unless you like watching paint dry)
Kind of boring, but take it just to get the credit.
he is such a math wizard he thinks the stuff hes teaching is common sense so he moves on quickly. tests are HARD. hes really nice though but has no social skills whatsoever and has a hard time talking to you one on one which makes it hard to get help.
not friendly, not helpful, moved way too fast, hard class. i withdrew and took it a different time, not with him. i would advise not to take him.
He's not so bad. Come to class and pay attention. Make sure you write down examples from class so nothing will be confusing when you study. He doesn't seem like a very social person but he is nice and will try to help you. Not a very difficult class.
Is a decent teacher but lectures become slow and awkward at times. Grades strictly by his syllabus and leaves little room for mistakes. You won't learn much, but if you show up, you'll pass.
i completely agree with person who commented on his lack of social skills, try to pay attenting in class (its tough because its boring), write down examples and do the homework and you should be fine. -he's not too good abotu reminding for midterms though
So boring. Very hard test.
very boring. test were crucial.some quizzes very few test. too boring
I totally agree with everyone! He goes way too fast, and the tests and quizes (EVERY Friday!!) are worded very weird, and hard to understand. He goes way too fast without explaining much. I took this class at 2 pm, but found myself nearly falling asleep!
Definitely do the examples and the homework-you'll be lost without them. Quizzes every Friday, but usually a breeze. Tests are tough so study hard! Lectures are easy to follow.
The class isn't bad. He could go a bit slower, but as long as you actually do your homework the quizzes are ok... He is pretty boring but easy if you pay attention.
He loves what he teaches. Lectures are easy to follow. Quizzes once a week, and tests are tough. do the homework and study, you'll do fine.
boring class. hes willing to work with you if you need help. tests are not too hard. tough to keep eyes open during class
Ivey is one awesome Canadian. Ive never done well in math but did very well in this class and got an A. Lecture is good and quizzes kept my grade up rather than hurting it. He uses real-life examples all the time which are entertaining if youre into that kind of thing. Study and youre golden.
He is very good at explaining material. There are quizzes every Friday, no excuse for absence but by Uoffice, helpful by going over material that is unclear, hands back tests on time. 3 Midterms that are easy if you do homework. Not a bad class.
Great teacher! No homework policy but he does count absences. Very open office hours and if you're having trouble then all you have to do is ask. I studied and met for help, but the material is common sense. Easy class.
He is a great teacher!! Always has funny jokes to say in class. He moves fast but if you do the homwork, go to class and pay attention it will be a breeze. This class is really basic math and isnt hard, you have a quiz every friday and four exams. Its not hard and he is really nice.
Dr Ivey doesnt really care about his students.. he just cares about finishing the material and moving on. He grades very hard on every single problem. Honestly this math will make your head hurt because it is so confusing and so pointless...so get a professor that actually knows that and cares
He is not very helpful. I feel as if he does not care whether or not his students understood the material. He was very boring. This class was suppose to be an easy class but he makes it difficult. Get out if you can. Trust me, I love math but he will make you hate it.
He can be boring at times, but when he tells stories, he can be entertaining. He goes over problems in detail and tries his best to explain. I'm bad at math but for me, his class was a very easy A. Pay attention and ask questions, and his classes are easy.
This class was awful! Ivey couldn't explain his way out of a cardboard box. And here I worked so hard to avoid the other 203 teacher! A french teacher would be better than this guy. You ask questions, and he just can't answer down on the student's level. I'm an A student and struggled my way through only with the help of another professor.
I love Dr. Ivey! He was so hilarious, and a great teacher. He explains everything in depth, and if you don't understand something, he will go over it multiple times until you say you agree. He also is willing to help you outside of class. He is a great teacher, who does grade hard, but it's worth it because you actually learn the material!!
I thought he did not teach this class well at all. He is very monotone, so if you are tired at all, DON"T GO TO CLASS. He doesn't answer questions very well.
Dr. Ivey is a great guy and a great teacher. He will explain the material as many times as necessary for you to understand. Before every exam he has a review day for any questions. If I have to take another math class I would probably take him.
All the fuzziness and confusion I've had in Calc was fixed. I think Ivey is a very good teacher. The tests and quizzes came from the homework problems. He knows what he's talking about.
He really does know what he's talking about and is a great help. If you need help, ASK and he'll be willing to help you out any way he can.
he is very smart, but is a huge nerd! he's very willing to help and will always go over material again. he gives a quiz every week, but if you do the hw, you won't have a problem.
Ives is cool...definitely a nerd, but he prepares well and is easy to get help from outside of class...assigns alot of take-home work, though
Ivey was really easy. He goes over everything a couple times and will find time to help outside of class. Attendance is mandatory, homework is not checked, and only grades are 4 tests.
Professor Ivey is a GREAT professor. It's the class itself that's somewhat boring. But honestly, how much excitement can you expect from a stats class? He's clear, nice, funny, and a very fair professor. I recommend him to absolutely anyone!! Easy A if you do the homework and participate in class
I don't know what everyone is talking about. He is SO unclear, seriously cannot explain what he taught you at all. The grades are only four tests (so he doesn't grade homework) but I would have gotten like a D if I didn't have another stats prof for my major teaching me at the same time. If you're really good at this or if you've taken stats before
Hardest class ever!! Stats is a hard subject but this guy doesn't help the situation! Flies through each chapter, and assumes you know way more than you actually do. Leaves out critical pieces that my tutor had to teach me. I suggest more examples during class and allow the students a chance to do the problem before you finish it!
Prof Ivey does not care about students or their level of understanding. He is preoccupied with getting through the material and is not clear when presenting it, I learned more from reading the book than I did in class. I have also witnessed him being very rude towards student in class, he definatley has no people skills. Avoid at all costs.
goes to fast, thinks you know things you don't, i didn't learn anything from his teaching, when i went to the math lab the lady there made sense of things that i never understood when he did them
If you want to take a math class to get your gen ed requirements, dont take ivey. he presents things in class that seem easy enough, and when the quiz or test rolls around he makes words the questions so that you have no idea what formula to use. Doesnt care about students, except that he doesnt fail many. Just gives out alot of Ds.
Had him for Mathematics in Music. Sounded interesting, but Tommy made sure that it wasn't. Everything was absolutely confusing, even things I understood (overtones, phase shift) were rendered incomprehensible on his homeworks and quizzes. Looks like a really nerdy Steve Carrell.
Dr. Ivey did an excellent job teaching this class. I appriciated that he did not spoon feed the concepts, but challenged us to figure a lot of the material out on our own. Hardest class I've ever taken, but I feel so much more ready for classes in the 400 level now. Not the easiest teacher to follow all the time, but helpful in office hours.
Tom goes over material fast, but allows questions and does his best to answer them. He's a bit awkward when it comes to anything but statistics though. I wouldn't recommend being his friend outside of class, but I feel he does his best to teach where everyone can understand.
This was one of the most challenging classes I took. He goes over material very quickly and if you dont understand it you are pretty much on your own. He's not very approachable, which makes it difficult to get help. the only good thing is he gives online homework, which boosts your grade alot.
Prof. Ivey was pretty much useless as far as a stats teacher. Went over the material at a very rapid pace, no study guides or formulas, and because he wasn't approachable, I really struggled. He does assign online hw assignments, which are a grade booster, but overall, do NOT take him if you're looking to fufill your gen ed req of MATH 104!!
Dr. Ivey has been an excellent calc. II teacher. He is incredibly clear. Although he moves fast, he only says important things. This was a hard class but he made Calc II (notorious) pretty accessible. I would take him for all my math classes if I could.
Took Calc I from him - likes the word aribitrary.. If I had not taken Calc in High School, I would be failing his class right now. He does a lot of uneccisary explaining. He likes to provesomething before even telling you what he is trying to proove. And his SI thought he was better then everyone, so going to SI didn't help.
Ivey was not a terribly great teacher. I took calc in high school and it was the main reason i understood what was going on. He does do a lot of examples which help. He doesn't answer clearly when you ask questions, but he tries.
Not only did Prof Ivey not explain things well in class, but his tests had nothing to do with the homework that he gave. Half of the material he covered in class was explained in the most confusing manner possible. I had to spend most of my time in the math lab outside of class just to barely pass. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS.
I'm in the Honors College and taking Introductory Calculus with Ivey. He's by far the worst teacher I've ever had. I might get kicked out of the Honors College because of my grade in this class. i've tried going to math lab, taking online tests, going to officer hours, etc. his tests are ridiculous.
Worst teacher I've ever had. I'm a straight A student and he failed me my first semester in college. Do you know how weird it looks having all A's and one F? He is insensitive and blames the student for his inability to teach. Do not take any class of his, you'll regret it big time.
This man ruined my life. I wish I could say I was exaggerating, but he really did. Could not be more depressed over him failing me
Study like your life depends on it. Tests are extremely hard
AWFUL TEACHER. Ruined my GPA first semester of freshman year. I worked extremely hard and still barely passed the class. He is confusing and doesn't even teach anything you need on the final. Stay away from his class by any means possible.
Ivey def loves what he does, is patient with questions, give optional homework that helps with tests and understanding lectures. If you do the work, the class is easy. Just learn the formulas and how to use calculator programs and stats will make sense.
Ivey is unhelpful in class, and outside of class. He has horrible office hours and is not friendly. His tests are hard, and he doesn't explain well. If you ask a question in class, he doesn't give a good answer and isn't clear. He takes off points for the littlest of things on test and labs, so be prepared.
Dr. Ivey is definitely a good guy, but he's an awful teacher. He is unclear and not very friendly. I learned more from my TA and the math lab than I did from him the entire year. On tests he gives partial credit where it is due, but you have to know what you are doing. Doing well in the class is difficult, but with hard work it's possible.
I'm not a stats person so this class was somewhat of a struggle for me, but with going to his office hours and the CSL I pulled it off. Make yourself do the optional homework, it really will help so much. He can put you to sleep during lectures but can really can be very helpful outside of class if you ask for it.
He seems like a nice guy, but his lectures are so boring. I can barely keep my eyes open. Attendance is required and he assigns weekly online homework. The only things that go in the grade book are the tests and homework... so study hard!
boring
Professor Ivey is an excellent professor. He is brilliant and one can only learn from him. Only lazy people complain here, if you work hard, and math is not a kids game, study the material, practice extra problems and see him during your office hours for extra help you will do just fine. Math is all about practicing problems.
I LOVE math, but this professor wasn't good. He teaches ways of solving problems completely different than anyone. I went to CSL along with my entire math class and completed and studied the entire practice test for 3 days and still failed my tests. THERE IS NO EXTRA CREDIT. Tests and homework are the only grades so you have to do good on tests.
I would avoid him if you can. His tests are very hard, he had a bizarre way of demonstrating how to solve problems and he's not good at explaining theory in an easily digestible way. I've never had a class that I've worked this hard for and still gotten F's if this course weren't a corequisite for CSCI 250 which I'm doing well in I would've dropped
Will spend 5 mins on the hard stuff, then spend a whole class period on explaining long division
Ivey tries to be helpful and is pretty good at answering questions, especially if you go to his office hours. Overall, not a great teacher. He explains topics in class just fine, but its hard to connect those concepts to actual HW and test problems. His handouts and the textbook are super helpful though, and he gives you a cheat sheet for tests.
My first B+ in College, as a sophomore. He is a good guy but a terrible teacher, he is just confusing you are better of reading the book than going to class. A is possible you just need to practice problems. Do his homework and try to learn the material in other sources. Horrible handwriting too you can barely see what he writes on the board.
Dr. Ivey is a great lecturer and very smart. He is very passionate about mathematics and fair in grading. He makes mistakes but doesnt penalize students for it.
do not take this class unless you are naturally good at math. he is an unclear teacher and does not explain things very well. very repetitive yet somehow contradicts himself.
Literally the worst professor I have ever had! I am normally really good at math and like the subject, but he made me hate math. He grades very harshly. You can hardly read his hand writing on the board. The tests are really hard and nothing like the homework or class examples. The only grades are homework and tests, which are all hard and a lot.
Okay teacher at best, helpful during office hours, and homework assignments are graded on accuracy while the textbook and lectures do not help. Expect difficult tests and to not learn a whole lot. Everyone in the class struggles to get a good grade, forcing them to focus less on learning and more on getting by.
He's not amazing but still better than most math professors I've had so far. He's a harsh grader. I failed about every homework & test. He's nice but does not know how to teach. If you give your all to reading the book and exercises, you'll be ok. I do NOT recommend him for any other course unless you excel in the subject already. YOU NEED TO READ!
Worst class I've ever taken in my whole life. Unhelpful and disrespectful to students. If you're a student athlete, don't take his class because god forbid you get injured, he won't help you and he'll basically tell you to suffer. He also doesn't know how to write so you're just going to be stuck with squiggles on the board. Also a narcissist.
He is the worst teacher I have ever had. He is a terrible person does not care about you as a student. His teaching is very confusing I have always done well in math and have never gotten below a b and almost failed this class
He tends to talk in circles and can be very confusing when you asl a question. It is hard to read his hand writing which was a struggle for me. His tests are not multiple choice and you must always show all your work.
Ivey is the most misunderstood professor at the college. He gets flak for being a "bad teacher" when the reality is he's a good teacher who teaches a hard subject. I struggle a lot in math and I struggled a lot in this class, but he did everything he could to help me succeed. It's not his job to make the class easy it's his job to teach you.
I'm currently taking his class and it is very hard. I'm not very good at math in the first place so I expected to struggle but his class is very hard. Many people struggle in his class. I have studied for so many hours and gone to the CSL so many times and I still can't get above an F on his tests.
Withdrew from his class. I got an A+ in high school for prob/stats. How does he make it harder? I withdrew or else I would've plummeted in my other classes. If you take him, you must prioritize this class.
I am taking this class now and DO NOT recommend. I have always been good at math but find myself failing all of his tests. If you go to his office hours, he will rush you out of there and it is really not helpful at all. He's funny when he makes jokes occasionally and does seem like a nice guy, but its clear he doesn't want to be teaching.
Nice Guy. Tests are difficult, but straightforward. They are almost identical to the practice problems. If you have questions he responds very quickly to email. Allows you to use your phone on tests as a calculator. We were allowed a page of notes to use on the final. Homework is graded on completion. Class is a snooze fest but that's math for you.
He was a good teacher and could explain the content well and in an understandable way, but beware. The homework, lectures and tests are all completely different.
Dr. Ivey is a great professor. He cares about the student and wants them to learn and understand the content. The exams are very fair and we are well prepared beforehand. Ivey is obviously very knowledgable about the subject.
I like Dr. Ivey as a person and I wish I loved his class, but its just really hard. I struggled to have a B in his class, which is not a typical grade for me. He lets you have a formula sheet for the test which is ABSOLUTELY necessary. Stats is hard. Good luck.
He clearly loves the material. His lectures aren't always super beginner-friendly and he likes to really get in the weeds with topics, BUT he is great at answering questions and helping students at any level if they ask. He is happy to answer questions, elaborate, and review really basic stuff to make sure everyone is on the same page.
Genuinely the worst professor i have ever taken. I ended up getting a concussion during midterm time and let him know -- as well as my coach because i was a cofc athlete & he basically brushed it off and told me he didn't care. I was expected to complete the course with no help and now I have permanent brain damage. do not take this professor.
Exams are nothing like the study guides. Practice problems covered in class are extremely simple compared to what is seen on the test. Professor will skip steps in problems while working them out but will expect full proofs including what he skipped on tests. Weekly homeworks are graded on accuracy and are not graded leniently.
The worst professor I have ever had. Regardless of the endless amount of hours spent on this class, basically everything ended up being useless and not applicable to test material. Zero review for tests or the final. Told us the final would be mostly made up of x, y, and z. The final did not reflect that at all.
