Very hard, but you can learn a lot
Class is hard but you'll learn the material
he subbed my class for 2 weeks and those 2 weeks are the only time i've ever understood what's going on in chemistry-i got the feeling that his tests are pretty demanding though
Admittedly a very "challenging" professor. Requires you to learn the material. You will be WELL prepared for future chemistry classes. Makes the subject material extremely interesting. Although demanding, a very enjoyable experience.
The above are all true, yet I DO NOT recommend this prof. if you dont have PATIENTS and lots of it. He will drive you insane after saying the same thing for the 50th time, and dont even get me on his lack of staying on subject. Overall, he is a good guy.
This mother-****er is the most infuriating, aggravating **** in the school. avoid at all costs.
What an idiot.
He is funny and interesting. His test start out easy and then rapidly become harder I believe. You buy practice test, however, which help and his T.A is really helpful. If you take him take him at night though. It is long, but you will benefit from it promise!!
Just don't take him. Take anyone else.
You'll learn the material well, but at the cost of your GPA. He doesn't use the book much at all, and his notes are hard to understand. He's very smart and very respected, but I would reccomend avoiding him.
This is coming from a person who never had to study for any type of science class. He is demeaning & lecturous(not on the subject). Avoiding at all cost! Though this subject is required for all incoming freshman, take it somewhere else b/c if taken here, you'll have to take this professor.
Dr. Jackson is challenging, Don't take him for an easy grade, and don't take him lightly. Moreover he can seeem very intimidating and makes you want to shut up and die. Old-school southern, stubborn. But He knows what to do, and how to get it done. Don't take him unless your dedicated.
crazy
I encourage you to take this course if you plan to teach yourself. Be careful on the take home tests, you will see it again on the final. It is his way of getting you to learn what he could not teach. His name should be JACKA**!
The worst teacher ever. Do not take him, run fast, VERY fast from this man.
Dr Jackson is a very intelligent man and definately knows what he is talking about. Don't take a class from him unless you are prepared to work hard. He is an excellent teacher, although he is very strict. Overall, if you work hard and do things his way, you'll be rewarded with an A.
He likes to humiliate students.
A good teacher if you really want to learn chemistry. Very strict, yet fair and clear.

I haven't had chemistry in five or six years, and I dont find Jackson all that challenging. He lets you buy a test packet, and for one of your tests, it is exactly like one of the exams in the packet. Plus there is a take home exam so all you do is find a chemistry major to answer it for you. And he drops your lowest grade. He really tries to help
In my opinion he's a great professor he knows his subject and does like 2 crack a joke or few. Besides the fact hes a tennessee fan overall hes a great professor. Roll Tide!
He keeps the class' attention.
He's a big time smart a** and sometimes makes you feel stupid for asking questions. He lets you buy old tests/notes so his tests overall are pretty easy. He gets off the subject pretty easily too which can be annoying. I made a B in his class, I'd take him again.
Bit of an Ass but he is a good teacher
hE IS THE MOST CONFUSING TEACHER i HAVE EVER HAD.
He is a terribly boring teacher. I don't know how people can say he's entertaining. The course itself is very easy, but his teaching skills are horrible and one thing a professor should not do is call himself a dumba**.
The class is pretty easy, but the guy is an a**, and he gives no partial credit at all.If you don't put down exactly how you did a problem, he gives zero credit for the problem. He doesn't explain things well; he should not be teaching. If you're unlucky enough to take him, study your notes that day b/c he gives bonus problems once in a while.
He is truly a reason not to be a Chemistry major. He is very unclear and would rather tell stories about himself than teach! Also,he refers all the problems to his SI who barely understands either! AT ALL COSTS DO NOT TAKE!!! Even if it means staying at the school another year or transferring to take it somewhere else!
he would be a good teacher if he didn't teach like his first year chem. students were supposed to already know everything about chemistry.
this guy SUCKS!! Do not take if you want learn chemistry. he is very unclear, won't answer questions, and his tests are hard as hell. DO NOT TAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dr. Jackson has forgotten more chemistry than I could possibly hope to know in a lifetime! An excellent teacher!!
I WENT IN TO THIS CLASS WITH A LITTLE KNOWLEDGE OF CHEMISTRY. I AM ONLY TREADING WATER BECAUSE OF THE SI AND PAST KNOWLEDGE. I HAVE A B AVERAGE NOW, AND I STILL ADVISE ANY STUDENT TO AVOID THIS PROFESSOR AT ALL COST. I AGREE, HE DOES NOT LIKE TO ANSWER QUESTIONS, AND HE DOES NOT GIVE GOOD EXAMPLES. HE NEEDS TO RELATE BETTER TO THE STUDENTS!!!
This guy has got to be on crack. He doesnt actually teach class. We have 4 weeks remaining and we are still in Chapter 5, only our take home exam covers through Ch 19 and its due by next class period. He said that our final will resemble this test. He refuses to answer questions and treats his students like they are idiots. Avoid this professor.
I started out in Jackson's class at the begining of this semester and had to drop it. I studied a lot for his tests and went to the S.I. but stuggled because he does not teach clearly. He is rude and condescending. He'll tell you "Answer the question, and shut the h*** up!" But then when he answers your questions he can't follow his own advice!
I took this class last summer. It wasn't hard but it wasn't easy either. You have to study to pass his class. All of our test were mul. choice which was ok. If you have the test packet from the sem. b4 you will do alot better on his test. He is very much so rude and will call you stuipd if you don't know something. make u not want to talk n class
Jackson is the epitome of the arrogant, swaggering, distinctly unhelpful professor who follows the adage: Those who can, DO; those who can't, try to teach. At the beginning of the semester, his response to every question was, "Common sense should tell you...". His tests were very hard, primarily because he did not cover the material in class.
I agree with all the things the last few people said about Professor Jackson. I would recommend NOT taking his class!
I think he is great, not very easy, but if you study and practice the problems you can pase the test with no problem. I made an A, but i did my work. i dont see what everyone elses problem is.
He is definately NOT an easy teacher. If you skip class, don't take notes or don't pay attention, YOU WILL NOT PASS
Jackson tries so hard to be a smart ass when anybody asks him a question that he comes off as being mean. His lectures are horrible, he is stuck in the '60's, and not in the hippie way. His tests are pretty easy though, go over past tests that either he sells to you, or get from somebody else. He practically uses the same questions every semester.
He is a good teacher but, has a different approach than the average student is used too. He teaches concepts...I never had chem but will have to take this class twice.
The word JERK says it all
Dr. Jackson is an American Badass. His class is not for the weak. If you have a die-hard, Republican nature, he is the perfect professor. Highly recommended for anyone who is truly willing to learn chemistry.
He is mean and he does not consider the feelings of the students when he curses at them. Mr. Jackson has a attitude problem and he needs help with his issues instead of taking them out on the students.
Excellent teacher if you're actually here to learn chemistry. He will NOT baby you, in any sense of the word. If you want an easy class do not take Dr. Jackson -- if you want to take the hardest professor and learn the most; take Dr. Jackson, you will learn in his class or fail it. He has a temper, but he will answer your questsions, just ask!
I took this professor over the summer for nursing chemistry. I agree with the other ratings that he is quite mean and is unwilling to help students if they have questions, but i think he has low self esteem and lacks confidence in himself to answer our questions. Personally, I think he needs Christ in his life.
For the serious students only. Watch your back and be on top of your game and you'll be fine with lots of motivation. SI lectures are one of the best I've been in. Don't fall back like me or you won't do too well. Read the book throughly was a fact that I wish I have learn earlier. The $5 test packages are your BEST investment.
Horrible! He writes wrong answers on the board to see if you are paying attention, I find it hard to trust him teaching me. He does not like to answer questions and he is very rude. He knows his chemistry but is not good at explaining it to others.
This is a hard class. You must attend class or you will be lost. Most of the test questions come from the test packets you can buy in class and his notes. Take very good notes and if you can work the practice test, you will do fine on the in class test! I passed with a B but struggled. I would rec taking him if you are dedicated.
He explains the material well but is arrogant to anyone who asks questions. If you take him, always add up you test grades because there is usually a mistake on every test! He has a habit of not putting the right answers on the answer key. I rec. the night class - he is easier on that class and it only meets once a week so less material is covered.
DON'T TAKE THIS MAN IF YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO WORK HARD. I had him for Chem 100 and ended up with a stinking C in the class. Definitely watch out for false answers written on the board and be sure to buy the test packet. Read the book and go to the SI sessions, but don't ask Jackson for any help.
A very educated and effective instructor. Some find Dr. Jackson's class hard, but let me tell you: IT IS WORTH THE STRUGGLE! Regardless of how hard his classes may seem, I find that I learned A LOT from him. I would reccommend taking him if you are a dedicated, hard-working student interested in expanding your knowledge of Chemistry.
I always dreaded going to this class. He has a habit of making students feel dumb when they ask questions. He will also right things wrong on the board. Sometimes he does it on purpose and sometimes he doesn't even though he will always say he meant to. If nobody notices the mistake then it will just stay that way. Avoid this class if you can.
He is a total ASS!!! If there is a question you want to ask, ask someone else. He tries to make you feel dumb. He is old and stuck in his ways and needs to retire. If at all possible DO NOT take him. For nursing students this is a problem, because this is the only nursing chem. available. GOOD LUCK!!!
This class was terrible. He writes things on the board and sometimes he writes it wrong to "see if you are paying attention." If you don't catch the mistake he will leave it that way. He is very demeaning and I'm sure many people didn't ask him questions because they didn't want him to make them feel stupid and still not get the question answered.
He has GOT to be better than Forbes.
He rambles alot and it becomes hard to pay attention. His grading is pretty harsh. He's pretty useless when it comes to trying to get help. He leaves mistakes on the board on purpose and won't change them if you don't notice them.
I recommend him if you really want to learn chemistry. You need to study, but it's not hard to have A or B in his class.
Easy to understand. He expects students to come to class wanting to learn and actually trying. What a concept! Be respectful, pay attention, and study. That is the only way to succeed in Organic with any professor..Period!! Great teacher and person.
I was forced to take this class in order to complete my teaching certification. I cannot see how anyone could gain knowledge of Chemistry Fundamentals by taking Dr. Jackson. Out of 55 minutes of class time, we might get 10 minutes of actual instruction. The rest is incoherent rambling. This guy is 100% useless. Find a professor who will TEACH.
I had Dr. J for Organic I and II. Although it was the toughest class Ive ever taken, I could no be more thankful that I took him. He know this Organic and pushed his students. We started with about 65 students at the beginning of the year and ended with about 20. EVERY student was glad they took him becuse we feel like experts now!
He cusses alot to the class.
The most arrogant professor that I have had. Not personable at all, and when he is in a bad mood loves to yell at the class. Yells at people, even when they ask good questions. At least he does give group work assignments to help out your grade. Don't take this fool unless you don't have a choice.
horrible, horrible, horrible! avoid all costs!
He expects you to already know everything! if you ask a question, then he will basically cus u out he is horrable and doesnt explain anything he thinks he is god
He refuses to teach out of the textbook because he only believes in "his way", and even multiple times says stuff in the textbook is wrong. He encourages asking questions, yet makes fun of people when they do. Also grades correct answers wrong. Show up on time to class, or else he'll lock the door and won't let you in. Hardest teacher there.
Terrible teacher! Do not take his class. This was supposed to prepare me for my higher level chem classes yet I didnt learn a thing. He purposely teaches the wrong thing and expects the class to figure it out when they go home and study. So I learned everything wrong and had to drop the class. The first test is easy then its really hard.
useless... says the book is wrong, doesnt give partial credit and got mad and walked out of class after 10 min of lecture. most of the class is failing
hard, doesnt like to teach, makes people feel like they are stupid, hard final. very useless
Dr. Jackson is a very good teacher. He knows his stuff when it comes to Chemistry. He does like to make his students feel stupid though. Most of the people in my class were scared to raise their hand to speak. You must be in his class and listen to the lecture though. All you have to do to get a good grade is go to class, takes notes, and study!!
The class overall will rule your life. He is very helpful outside of class but he requires that you put in the time and effort required. His tests are terribly difficult and require you to committ many mechanisms and methods to memory. If you don't put forth all your effort you will be lost. Don't expect to touch bonus points on tests.
Dr. Jackson:basically has the rep of Lord Voldemort of Chem! He's brilliant and will help ALOT if you're going far w/ Chem courses. Come to class, pay attention, take notes, watch what you say around him! His test packet is SUPER USEFUL. His "labs" [Ch 100 doesnt have a wet lab] are good practice for exams! I survived, and glad I took the course.
Mr. Jackson I beleieve could be a good man. But is class is extremely hard and i studied my butt off. He will embrasses you in front of class and even when i went to his office for help he made me cry cause i was so aggrvated. All he did wwas make me feel stupid
Bit of a prick! Don't even bother buying a book it would be a total waste unless you use it as a door stop. He claims you dont need the book in his class BECAUSE HE DOESNT TEACH FROM IT! Enjoys making a joke out of students whom are there to learn not get insulted! Unless you enjoy getting insulted, embarrased & make a joke of then DON'T TAKE HIM!!
Don't listen to what anyone says on here! If you are willing to pay attention in class and study then you will do fine.Dr. Jackson's personality is very misunderstood, he honestly is a good guy! If you go to his office and show him what you are having problems with he WILL take the time to help you! He is very intelligent and I would take him again
worthless teacher. it's hard for me to say that about someone but i didn't learn a single thing from his lectures. si was the only reason i got an "a"
VERY TOUGH!!
I will not forget this class. it will help me in the future
He knows chemistry to a tee. Unfortunately, he loves to make people feel really stupid by ridiculing them in front of the whole classroom no matter what kind of question it is. He is incredibly cynical towards our class. I wouldn't recommend his class to anyone.
If you are willing to put up with a very demeaning professor then by all means take him. He makes you feel stupid for the questions you ask. If you ask him to work a problem from the test he will grumble that he's "already gone over the material so you should know it". He also gets off track during lecture. Plus he is very cynical.
Not very helpful!
This teacher is awful. Hard tests and not very helpful.
not good
Oh my gosh this class killed my GPA. I've never made a grade like this in my life and I was constantly surprised by his tests. The only way to ace the class is to study over 40 hours a week.
First, if you make a B in his class you have learned a lot. That being said, quite possibly the worst teacher I have ever had. Not only that during advising told me that I would not get into pharmacy school, since then I have been accepted. Pretty strong words from a guy who does absolutely no chemistry research why is he still there.
Super Easy class... he gives you the tests to study and you get boocoo bonus points!!! i learned all this stuff from high school... i was like only freshman in the class and i did fine!! and go to the S.I. meetings... a teacher is there to tell you the answer if you are wrong... we worked out all the tests!! easy!!
Very hard class. Dr. Jackson is very difficult to understand at times. My best advice would be to LEARN Dimensional analysis and study the test packets, most of the test questions come from that packet, but do know how to work out the problems. The bonus pts (dimensional analysis) will come in very handy at the end of the semester, 10 pts each!!
i loved dr.jackson's class. there was only 2 things i did not like. 1- we never used the book, so that was 120 bucks wasted, the other is that i'm in chem 131 now, and i take very few notes, because jackson taught it well. -that being said i'd take his class again!
Easiest Chem class I've ever had. Dr. Jackson explains everything to the smallest detail. He answers student's questions in a calm and helpful way. I even called him at home once and talked with him for an hour about a homework problem. Clearly an expert; he is the best in the field. Dr. Jackson improved my Good Organic Chemistry Terminology.
Jackson is a tough cookie. I recommend taking Jackson only if you have no other choice. If you take him, definitely study the test packets. Some questions on the quiz & exams come from this material. He will give help after class but he is a bit of a smart-ass. I dropped him b/c I took the placement exam and passed which he prepared me for.
Hrd as heck this man makes me want to stream if you have a lot of free time and you love chem Then take him.Although the class is difficult in the end you will know chenistry very well if chemistry is your major i would suggest him becaue you will lean alot
Basic chemistry course. Sure, he talks condescending to this class because he thinks most aren't too intelligent. He gives plenty of bonus, however, and you can drop a test. If you take notes, start studying the material from the start, and come to class you'll do quite well.
What a jerk!! I had Jackson by mistake. I started with another teacher, but my original teach had a heart attack in the middle of the semester, perfect timing, I know, and I WAS passing at the time- when the class has about 140 students in it. Then in comes Jackson, who also happened to be my advisor at the time, for Pre-Med, and he starts teaching us ORGANIC Chem in a Chem 100 class. I eventually had to drop and I dropped last minute. By that time there were about 25 ppl left in the class.
