This guy is strying to kill his students. You will have a "quiz" every day which requires essay answers. Then tests which are also essays-He is so picky.
absolutely great! STAR TREK NERD ALERT! i dont know what this other guy is talkin about. he gives daily quizzes, yes, but they are incredibly easy. you get 15 min 1/2 way thru the test to ask questions to fellow classmates!

Very nice guy. Offers help whenever needed, Tests are all essay questions that he already gives to you like 5 weeks before the test, so if your not lazy and you write them on your own, he'll go over them with you and tell you how to improve the essay
Talks too fast, hard to get the notes down for long answer ?s, which are half the test. He tends to steretpye his students, so watch out. Get on his good side! if u like 3 hrs of listening to oceanography, star trek refferences, by all means, sign up. hugest mistake of my academic career!
He's nice guy and puts humor into his lectures-even though its about Star Trek alot-and explain things in a way that helps you understand.I'm not a science person but I liked his class. He gives you the questions that will be on the test in advance and is always happy to help you.But you have 2 STUDY
He is mediocre, obviously new to teaching. He cant figure out how to hand back graded papers, and he NEVER lets class out even a minute early, because of THE RULES. He can't make the jump from PhD candidate to Community College instructor, he's too educated and severly lacking in people skills.
I thought he was a great teacher. You just have to blame yourself if you can't keep up with the dates. Just gotta know when the test is because he gives you all the questions anyways its up to you if/when to review them
Noyes is a great teacher. He is clear, helpful and will answer q's until you understand. He frequently ask the class q's to make sure studnts are interacting with the subject. Attending class is crucial because his exams are based on lectures. Highly recommended if youre a responsibile studnt.
This is the easyist class I have every taken, If you have no science in your back ground this is a good class to take.If you have any science background(HS included)this classs can be painfully borning. You don't real need the text book except as a reference, so try to share a text book with some one
just say no. tons and tons of mindless memorization required to get an A or B....he's a picky grader....
Quizes almost every time you go to class. Labs are just a pain and makes you stay till the end of class if you don't get it all right. Picky grader on essay. Miss a slight thing, he will mark you down. Plays favorites. If you want to work hard for a B go ahead.
This class is incredibly boring.Half the class dropped by the 5th week and these students were serious students. There is no way to get full credit on homework assigns with his rule to only grade 1 assignment per week.He plays faves, doesnt answer questions, and KEEPS U TILL THE END AND THEN SOME!

Just say no when it comes to this teacher
Its not a hard class as long as u can keep up with the work reqd. He hands out thorough notes, and summaries for each section. Homework is laid back but will really boost ur grade, if u do it..He is extremely helpful
he tried but sometimes it just is no use. tests and questions are very repetative. definatly dont need to buy the book. lab and classes are painfully long never lets you out early. overly anal about stupid little things
He is the best teacher @ elco. He makes sci fairly interesting & fun w/ lots of demos & labs. If you dont understand just ask & he will clarify. He won't just tell you to look in the book like some other profs. He also takes your effort & active participation into consideration when making your final grade.
Easy class. Test based off of lectures and study guides, just take notes and listen, you should do just fine. Don't really need the book. Students who don't do so hot: lazy and disruptive, the ones that talk way too much during class. If your a good test taker, you can have your test be worth more of your grade, and get away with doing no homework.
This teacher is not the best... by far! He teaches this class as if it were your MAJOR! And if its not your major don't take him!!! Also other Ocean prof. have said the same thing about him... "His tests are emphasized on a PHD degree. This was only a reqmt. class I was not going to work at the Ocean!!!
when you ask him a question, he sometimes makes you feel you're stupid. also, his essays are hard to answer. he is very picky with the words you use, and there is a lot of memorization. plus, attendance is 20%!
This class was hard. He gives u a lot of busy work for three hours. Can't leave until it's all correct. Keeps u after class. Tests and work is long and very difficult.

He's a very good teacher, I highly recommend. You just need to pay close attention to everything he says and maybe you should ask questions. He's very helpfull Overall great!
really good teacher, knows what he's talking about..but he kinda makes it obvious when he doesn't like certain student. materials are difficult but his notes helps alot. exams are long with essays..but everything on tests are from the notes. as long as you take good notes and pay attention in classes..you'll easily get A.
notes are already printed for you all you have to do is fill in some blanks. makes things easy to understand. gives you a discussion period during the test to talk with other people. i highly recommend him
great teacher. very understandable. talk to him outside of class in his office hours and he will help boost your grade towards the end of the semester. you are able to retake every test and he gives a ten minute discussion period in between each test. easy class and its fun as well.
DR. Noyes is a great teacher even though is just the 4th week of the semester I have a very good feeling that this class will go good. He is very helpful and if you so your study sheets you will do fine in the quizzes and the exams. This class is very interesting. You end up seeing the ocean in a new perspective MUST TAKE HIMM EASY A!!!!
He is very clear when giving lectures, and tests are easy to study for if you go to class and pay close attention. The labs and the homework are a clear view of what answers he is looking for on tests. I loved this class.
I dont think this is an easy A class, you have to study consistently, but at the end if you make an effort, he will grade you in a ver generous way, ie if you had an 88% hell give you the A or if you had a 64% and you do good on the final hell give you a C!it was an interesting class and he really is a good and caring teacher, take him and study!
Makes this subject interesting. Only downfall is no grading through out the semester, difficult to gauge how you are doing in class. No final, two 10-page essays plus class notes and class participation equal your final grade.
Good amount of work. Favors girls if you act concerned about your grade. Long class. I got a B.
class is very challenging. he's willing to help during office hours and after class. he tries his best to makes sure you understand the material. hes anal, wants to ensure you know the subject. very helpful and has a true passion for the subject. he's the greatest teacher i've had at elco. i would recommend him to anyone and everyone!
Oh well, this is a very hard teacher. He does assignments weighted (exams at nearly the entire grade). His exams are all essays and are really hard. If you don't already know the materials, you will not understand. I don't recommend this teacher.
Loves his subject and makes it interesting with the alternate site activities, in class video's, student examples and study sheets. Lots of homework & quizzes & mini tests throughout the semester which helps you maintain a good grade. If you're prepared to work hard then this is an easy "A". Labs are fun as well. GREAT CLASS!!!!!
I recommend everyone to take Dr. Noyes' class. He is the best professor in ECC. He is very passionate, funny, clear, and helpful. At the end, you'll learn at least something about ocean. I guarantee that you will love his class. But his class is not that easy, but if you study hard, pay attention, and do all the work, you will definitely get an A.
this teacher sucks, probably one of the worse teachers ever. he picks favorites and if he doesnt like you he marks your work down for no reason. the homework is stupid and takes forever to do...pointless class, take bio instead.
he gives ALOT of work. its not that it is hard, but this class is probably the amount of work you would do in 2. exams have discussion periods where you can share answers, but still pretty hard. alot of labs and homework. if your looking for an easy A, dont take this class
Online. This course is a very labor intensive class. Make sure you have plenty of time to dedicate to it. Overall, the labs can be easy grades if you go in and complete them at school. Ask questions if you need to. Study Sheets for Quizzes. His lesson readings are fairly easy to follow which helps if you are not a science major. I enjoyed it!
Lot of work and is very picky with the answers on the test. if u forget just a little thing he marks everything wrong. very time comsuming and lectures are boring. you get time during the test to share answers but too much work.
The class may seem very repetitive and boring at times, but he lets you have discussion time during the tests. How many other teachers do that? Might as well be legal cheating. Just sit next to the smartest or the most attractive girl you can find so you can breeze through the tests and not be bored out of your mind during 3 hour lectures.
No. Too much work.
Don?t listen to the people who said too much work, ANY work is TOO much for them. He doesn?t collect the HW that he assigns, he goes over it in class AND you get xtra credit for answering them. There were only about 3 easy out of class assignments that we had to turn in. Lectures were interesting and the labs were fun. I loved this class!
He has changed his class completely now. Due to the many prior complaints. He is now very easy and anyone can do quite well now.
Good teacher. Very straight forward.
I took his on-line class and thought he and the class were awesome. I am not science minded and do not like the subject at all but he made it very easy to follow. He does give a lot of work and it is very time consuming but he is always available to answer questions. It is the best distance learning class that I have taken so far. I would highl
i took this class online, but i went to class on fridays for lab (thats optional,u can do labs online).Class was easy and teacher is wonderful. Gives discussion period on exams. There is a lot of work to do for this class but it is easy, mostly reading. Mr. Noyes is willing to work with u. We had to go to the beach several times but that's optional
Comepletely plays favorites, instead of answering a legit question makes you look like a moron for asking.100% lacking in people/social skills and is completely oblivious to it = has thee worst personality for a teacher to have.So condescending that I honestly thought he had a personal problem w/ me until I read the other comments.DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!
Okay, here's the deal with this class: It's a TON, and i do mean a TON of work. For 4 credits, you meet twice a week for 3 hours and 10 minutes! (that's 6 hours and 20 mins per week!) You take a ton of notes and do a ton of labs, he's super picky about your answers, but he's also really interested in his subject and you understanding the ocean.
this class is easy although it does require effort. make sure you're there for the labs & do the study guides + the online practice quizzes because the questions on the test are the SAME as those. discussion time with classmates during exams! there is no reason to not pass.
Easy notes, just fill in the blank type of notes. Buy a 15$? ish packet for his class and everything is given (lab, hw, notes) Tests arent hard. Just write everything you know for word prblems even if it means repeating yourself. I bought the book but did not use it. if you dont study, then it becomes "hard." He really isnt too bad. just study abit
This class is more work than it is worth. He expects details and is not a good teacher at all. He is a prick and gets mad over the littlest things. If you put answers in his words and not your own you get points taken off your exams. When he is lecturing he stares at you and yells in your face. He takes away peoples cell phones, like it is highschool
Online files are much too verbose. Instructions would be clearer if instructor placed less emphasis on unimportant details and more on simple goals and directions. Step-by-steps do not require excessive use of highlighting and different pen colors, but simple numbering would help. Noyes is willing to be helpful, which is important. Calendar request
the professor is very helpful, but for an introduction class, is a hard grader. you learn a lot, which is a good thing, but the detail of what you're expected to know is insane. i hope the professor realizes that not everyone is a science major, let alone oceanography major. he works hard for the class.
This guy is a complete piece of work. You can never do anything right, and what someone else said is right, he is a total prick! He expects you to explain stuff like you're a phd in oceanography! He expects way too much and this class is an intro? Yeah right, more like last year getting your phd. He wants way too much detail, and he's WAY OCD...WAY
Alright. This guy is crazy. He likes to take points off for fun! A lot of the time it's not fair, becuase he knocks of like half a point. He is very annoying, and yes, like everyone has said he is kinda ocd...actually a lot! I would not take him at all!!! The expectations are way ridiculous. College is hard, but he makes you suffer...to the extreme
Probably the worst teacher at El Camino. He is really immature and will grade according to how much he likes, or dislikes you. When you ask why it is wrong he makes up excuses and wont change it. His online reading is full of typos (ANNOYING) dont take his class, he is terrible!!
This guy is the worst professor at elco. He gets me so angry that everytime I see his gay purple Honda fit in the parking lot I want to key it. Don't take him, neves is way better. He dresses like an idiot too. My bitter ex gf hates him too.
Professor Noyes is very detailed about things. He wants you to really learn things. This class was the hardest class I've ever taken in my life, however I'm sure there are worse teachers out there. At least you learn in this class, he makes sure of it. It's A LOT of work and if you try you hardest, it may not be good enough.
Noyes is a very good teacher his methods are sound and his notes are clear. There is a lot of material to be learned in this class and when it comes to exams he is not going to let you B.S your way through them. He grades based on how well you understand the material. Those who put in the effort will do well, others will not.
Bottom line, this teacher is HARD!!! I really struggled, but in the end I got an A by 1%. (91%) He wants to know details like you are a pro, but you do learn stuff. If you are a sci major, take him in class not online. But, if u need to take it for a ge like me, try for someone else. Really hard but I got an A! More work than is necessary.
Noyes is alright. He is not the worst professor I've ever had or the best. His class is like a high school class. He gives you his website that has everything you need to do well in the class. You have to show up to every single class or you will miss out on a lot of information and points. If you want an easy A don't take him.
funny at times but mostly annoying. this class requires A LOT of effort. he is super anal and likes to take off points and doesn't really explain why. buying the book is not necessary, tests are based on lectures. he is very detail oriented. not a very helpful prof. he loves oceanography & is very intelligent but doesn't know how to teach.
This man right here. He grades your tests very hard and you have to be sooo specific with your answer or he will mark you wrong for it. He's anal about eveything. He doesn't let you leave right after the exam which sucked b/c the exam was an hour and the 1/2 long. Rain or shine you HAVE to go to the trips to the beach. (which wouldve been nice if it was nice weather, but it wasn't) my suggestions don't take his class.
Professor Noyes is definitely organized. The text book is not needed to pass the class, but he does require studentst o purchase two of his notebooks which are inexpensive and make life in this class much easier. He is very precise, and grades tough when it comes to exams. Gives out hw, plans field trips aka "ASA" and attendance is mandatory, but
Not sure what all these previous comments on here are about.I have not done any kind of science class in a decade and am doing very well thanks to Prof Noyes.Maybe he has been on here and taken action to sort himself out, but I find him extremely helpful and his classes very interesting. He OBVIOUSLY LOVES what he does!
I took this class online and it was one of the most difficult classes I have ever taken. I worked so hard and still failed, he is strict on labs, study guides, and tests. He obviouslly loves what he does, but doesn't appreciate that students don't have such a huge knowledge of oceanography and need to be graded easier. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS!
i took this class online... and i agree with comment below. the most hard class i ever take in elcamino. He is super picky and hard to get good grade. if you want to work extra extra hard for online class.. go for it
your grade is determined by if he likes you or not. He offers alot of information through the reading but he does not help you if you don't understand.
This class was very hard. He the answers excatly how he said it in his lectures. I had to drop a class to pass this one. I did learn a lot though and enjoyed the labs and videos. I really didn't like how the we had to stay for another lecture AFTER a test!
This teacher is very hard,i took his online class and seems like he always has a chip on his shoulder. He is very bitter, and if you dont love oceanography like him, he gets mad. Also if you ask a question for help, and you dont know anything about the question (which is why you ask) he talks to you like your stupid. I would not advise taking him.
I took this class online. The lectures, readings, and lab are VERY interesting and enjoyable to learn about. HOWEVER, he grades your work very hard. He likes to easily take points off. For example, for not changing the colors of your post. I tried very hard in this class & the feedback I get from him are so harsh. Makes you feel stupid.
he knew how hard i was working and gave me an A even though i had missed the mark on the final and really deserved a B. He is open to suggestions about his teaching and makees you feel comfortable asking questions. I even asked if lobsters wered really blue before they were cooked and he didn't make me feel stupid. that is hard to do.
DO THE STUDY GUIDES! Longest class ever but I learned a lot. You WILL NOT pass the tests if you don't do the study guides. He'll never let you out early, even if you finish your lab early. Holds you hostage with a kelp stamp. Got pretty boring at times but hey, I learned a lot. No need to purchase notes, just print them.
I took this class back in Fall '08. I received a C, only a percentage away from a B. He's a pro at the subject but can be very anal and gets irritated easily. Take good notes, and complete all labs. Exams are long and very difficult. It requires you to do some sketches, mostly comes from fill-in study guides/notes. Interesting class.
He is the closest thing to a real university professor here. He is difficult, but if you can muster an A, you may be ready to transfer to a big name school. He is very fair but very anal about everything. But get used to it because he can almost be a saint compared to some profs at top ranked universities! Take! You'll repct urself in the end!
Good teacher. To the point. Nothing is a mystery. Just do the work. Follow the study guides while you read and you'll be fine for quizzes and tests. Force yourself to bust through the labs asap. Labs are the only pain, but just handle.
I TOOK THIS CLASS ONLINE AND FOR SOME ONE WHO HATES LABS AND SCIENCE CLASSES I DID REALLY GOOD. THIS IS BECAUSE PROFF NOYES IS AN AMAZING PROFF. STRAIGHT TO THE POINT AND VERY HELPFUL WHEN YOU NEED HELP. IF YOU DO YOUR WORK THEN YOULL BE GOOD. EVEN IF YOU DONT DO SO GREAT ON ALL UR TESTS. AT LEAST I WAS GOOD TO GO.
Oceanography with Noyes is simultaneously one of the most intense and frustrating classes, and also one of the most rewarding classes at Elco. The online section involves so much work in the form of labs/assignments that it is actually painful, but it helps you to learn and retain so much of the info. Noyes is great, but take the in-class section!
This instructor is very annoying, he is anal. He takes points off without clearly explaining why. He does not know how to teach or connect with the students. My suggestion due not take his classes.
His class was the best I ever took! I loved this class. I understand it’s a little hard class. He correct and grade your answer precisely and a lots of homework. However he is passionate about the ocean and knows a lot. I learned a lot from him and it’s useful information in your life. Going to beach for onsite class was fun. Take this class!
He's a good professor. Knows his stuff well. There is no kind of slacking off in his class, but he sets you up nicely to succeed. I definitely learned a whole bunch of new stuff. I would recommend taking him, but don't slack off and you should be good.
Mr. Noyes is a great professor. He really knows his stuff and is passionate about oceanography. I have seen some bad reviews for him but honestly if you think he is hard don't take any other science classes or you will fail. Do the online quizzes to study and you will pass no problem. I wish he taught other science classes because he's awesome!
Material was explained really well which made learning new things interesting and not too challenging. But I have 2 major complaints: the amount of homework/labs/reports was really overwhelming... Also I couldn't stand how he graded super hard on EVERYTHING. My final grade in his class was way lower than what I was initially anticipating. :/
Professor Noyes is great. He's passionate about oceanography and really wants his student's to learn. His syllabus seems overwhelming at first, but it's not that bad. I recommend taking his class online and attending class once a week for lab. It was fairly an easy A as long as you do all your work.
I took professor Noyes Fall 2014. Great teacher. He knows his stuff. He's a strict grader so watch out on those lab reports. Do the practice exams and optional quizzes and you will pass exams. Don't miss class you will miss a lot of important information. Overall great teacher I learned a lot.
i needed to take a science class for my GE and I figured this would be a great class to take. The information is very interesting and he teaches it well. However, he's extremely rude and if he doesn't like you, you'll know. Whenever I ask him something, he'll answer but he'll always make you feel minuscule. I would suggest you take someone else.
best prof ive had at elco. very clear about grading criteria. if you take the practice quizzes online(can take them as many times as you like)you will know everything on the test. makes lectures engaging, even if they are long as hell. labs are a pain but youll get through it. anyone complaining, i guarantee they were lazy, its all there for you.
WORST EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE I WILL NEVER TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM AGAIN. HE IS THE WORST EVER TO BE AT A COMMUNITY COLLEGE. HE NEEDS TO GO TO A UNIVERSITY THE WAY HE EXPECTS THINGS TO BE IS RIDICULOUS AND I JUST HONESTLY HAD THE WORST EXPERIENCE EVER WITH HIS CLASS. YOU WILL NOT HAVE TIME FOR OTHER CLASSES DEALING WITH HIM. BE WARE
This guy is great, VERY enthusiastic. If you open your mind to learning, easy to pass because it makes sense, barely had to study. Obviously, you have to do some type of work to pass. high school level ocean class. He makes it SIMPLE. GREAT informative lectures but are LONG, don't expect to be let out early. He will NOT baby you, this is college.
Didn't know what to expect, but pleasantly surprised! Noyes is really passionate about the ocean! Lots of work, lecturing and sometimes boring labs! Work can be done online and multiple times for higher grade. Extra credit opportunities! Lots of opportunities to get an A if you do ALL the work and study guides/online quizzes for exams are helpful!
For a GE class its pretty ridiculous the amount of work he assigns. Granted, he is passionate about the subject and if you are on top of the work it is possible to get an A. I overlooked the amount of work it would take and ended up with a C. Be on top of it and an A is in your reach. took him online.
He gets irritated when you ask questions and expects you to know everything already. He gives so much work and quizzes per section. If he likes you he'll let you complete labs and give you credit for completion if he doesn't he picks at every little thing that's not to "his standard" on the labs. Do not take his class!
Professor Noyes is an extremely strict grader. His lab is three hours long and will keep you the entire time. If you get one question wrong on his incredibly long lab he will send you back to your desk to revise the answer instead of just explaining your error and giving you credit and letting you leave. Lots of online work to be completed.
Noyes seems to pride himself in having a difficult class so much that it takes out any enjoyment or interest you could possibly get out of an Oceanography class. The work required for this course is the equivalent to at least two standard science classes. Take those instead, you will have an easier and overall more enjoyable class experience
Best professor ever! Even though there is a lot of homework, there is no exams in this class. You can take quizzes either in class or at home online. You have unlimited attempts to redo the quizzes unles your score satisfies you. This class is pretty relaxing, and it is easy A unless you are super lazy to do all the work at home.
His class is a lot of work which is tedious, but it's not hard work, its doable as long as you actually try/are determined to get a good grade. A lot of people who I've talked to this semester didn't like him because they were lazy/didn't want to put in the work. You can retake the homework/quizzes as many times you want for the grade you want.
Advice: 1) Buy his fill-in textbook, saves $ on printing 2) Yes there's a lot of HW: it's literally two classes BUT you can turn it in WHENEVER with no deductions 3) No in-class tests, all little online quizzes so you can-retake as many times 4)smart class b/c it knocks out your science + lab requirement. GO TO OFFICE HOURS if you are confused!
Pretty chill professor
Not a helpful individual, doesn't help effectively when a student doesn't understand the material, especially if a student has NEVER taken the class before. SO ANNOYING!!!!!!
best professor i've ever had hands down. he's accommodating and lets you turn basically everything in late and he doesn't deduct you points for it. he also lets you take the quizzes / tests online as many times as you want until you get the score you want. he also has so many extra credit opportunities that it's impossible to fail his class.
Get ready to do a lot of homework, this is not an easy class but professor Noyes is definitely caring and wants to ensure you learn the material of his class. DO NOT SLACK OFF and leave things for the end, his intro to ocea. class was definitely hard but I passed with a good grade, the final was extra credit if you were doing well in the class.
He is a very nice teacher, and the most chill person. There are a lot of homework, but he let you re-submit your work many times. Everything due at the end of the semester, and he also gives you a lot of extra credit. It's an easy class. Don't hesitate to take his class.
Noyes is a great professor. He makes it easy to learn and he explains thoughly. In addition he is more interested in his students learning than seeing that they just pass a test. The work required for this course is equivalent to two classes which is why it's a Hybrid couse. If you take the actual course you will spend six hours in class
Lots of lectures and can be really boring to listen to. On top of that homework and quizzes everything, do them on time and get them out of the way (trust me). Labs are annoying to do because if the whole group doesn't agree and have the right answer you have to wait your turn in line. Very tough grader on the two papers you have to do. Good luck
It is evident that Dr. Noyes takes pride in his subject matter; however, that doesn't negate the fact that his contact and grading policy is based on preferential treatment. Ask too many questions -- be placed on the lowest priority. Turn in a document in person -- get a zero until he has time to grade it.

Hes a very bad professor he doesn't know how to teach all he says is random stuff. Their are not exams but a lot of work and he is a very hard grader. He is very aggresive with work if he's not satisfied he will say something really mean. Hes rude, disrespectful, and crazy. PLEASE TAKE SOMEONE ELSE DO NOT TAKE NOYES FOR ANYTHING.
Overall Professor Noyes' class as challenging but doable. I repeated his oceanography class this Fall'19 and compared to Summer'18 , he did assign fewer papers. The work was doable but time consuming, so do NOT procrastinate on the units or quizzes because you'll find yourself not sleeping on the last 2 weeks of school. I did learn A LOT though.

I took him during the winter so it was a hybrid course composed in a month which was very time-consuming. His class isn't too challenging and is doable. As long as you are keeping up with your assignments and resubmitting assignments after he grades them which earns you extra points to make up for, you'll pass his class. He gives ec at the end too.
DISRESPECTFUL RUDE TOWARDS PPL !!! DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS HE IS THE MOST AWFUL PROFESSOR EVER ! HE TALKS TO PPL LIKE THEY ARE STUPID ! AND MAKES STUPID COMMENTS! HIS LECTURES R VERY HEAVY AND LOTS OF PAPERS TO DO ONLINE !! HIS LABS ARE HARD AND HE DOESN'T TRY TO HELP STUDENTS!! DO NOT TAKE HIM HONESTLY WASTE OF TIME !!!
This professor need to get help because he is really mental and need to calm down he gives too much work and is a really hard grader. I feel sorry for his students to deal with this crazy man. He needs a trarapist and needs to control himself if he is going to teach. I hope he gets fired because he is rude disrespectful and doesnt care for no one.
do not take him. he is the hardest grader in the world. he expects beyond perfection. it like he expects you to know every little thing about the subject (beyond what he teaches) and wants every possible little detail in the world. you give him your best work answering everything in his question in detail yet he will give you a D or C at best
For his hybrid classes he has it set up where everything is due on every Sunday and there are 4-7 quizzes plus homework, lecture, group assignment, papers, etc. The quizzes are the most ridiculous. 2-15 points per quiz, each question within is only worth .05 -.5 points each with up to 85 questions. Very confusing teacher, DOES NOT know what he wants
I respect that professor noyes has passion for this subject, but it is evident that he enjoys making his students struggle. Noyes is a extremely tough grader and makes his quizzes and tests very difficult to be an INTRODUCTION TO OCEANOGRAPHY CLASS. He does not seem to understand that. He also enjoys re sending back your work to re do.
All I can say is, good luck. Way too much work and expects way too much for an Intro Oceanography class. Do yourself a favor and just take Oceanography Honors, you'll do better in that class AND you'll most likely have less work.
I don't really agree with other reviews saying that he's a tough grader: he gives you a grade that is appropriate for the amount of work done and effort put into it. He can be a bit nitpicky but he is very passionate about what he does, which I really appreciate and admire. Overall, I've enjoyed the class and appreciate oceanography much more.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! He is a tough grader, extra with his assignments, and when he assigns an assignment he expects you to write everything he expects word by word. He gets bothered if you do not respond back to his emails. He responds to your emails during midnight and expects you to respond back immediately.
Had to take this class my last semester at El Camino to fulfill a requirement for out of state transfer. This was my worst mistake. James in passionate and I respect that, however, when you give a test and have 17 possible answers (no exaggeration), that is a bit ridiculous. Think twice before taking his class. I really wish I had other options.
Lectures r fmted in asgmts, w/ periodic questions about the readings. Almost all asgmts can be revised/retaken for + credit. There's wkly written asgmts where he's looking for VERY detailed answrs. To the point where I think he's being obtuse just to make u type more/go into detail. He puts in a lot of effort into class & expects u to do the same.
Prof. Noyes is great! He's so nice and passionate about the subject, he really made me care for the environment even more than I already did, I learned a lot. Lots of work but it isn't hard if you actually pay attention to his lecture and read his study guides. I would take him again if I had to.
Dr. Noyes is great, he lectures non-stop through the class, uses handouts and powerpoints which are very helpful for the quizzes in Canvas which have limitless attempts. Tough 'A', easy 'B'. If you really want to learn to love the environment and ocean, take him. Pay attention, read and you will pass.
Yikes. He is very smart and passionate, however the amount of work you need to do in order to get a high grade is too much. He is VERY nitpicky about how you answer the many discussions. I am not good with reading long material, which he has a LOT of. If you could, take a different professor.
Beware of 80 question homework and/or quizzes that are less than 4 points, Repetitive readings to quizzes and labs but don't realize because it scattered multiple links. Vague response to take-home exams and how you can improve grades. Half of the class dropped out within the first week, I made the mistake of not doing that. Take at your own risk.
Beware of 50-80 question homework and/or quizzes that are less than 4 points, Repetitive readings to quizzes and labs but don't realize because it scattered multiple links. Vague responses to take-home exams and how you can improve grades. Half of the class dropped within the first week, (red flag), I regrettably stayed, Take at your own risk.
I agree that he can be very nit-picky when it comes to written assignments. There are a ton of long assignments that are worth very few points. With that being said, you get unlimited attempts on pretty much everything: exams, labs, quizzes, homework, etc. So if you want an A, you will get it, but it is 5 times as much work as any other class.
Horrible. His online class consists of 3 written homeworks, 5 quizzes, and 3 discussion posts a WEEK. A WEEK YALL!!!! He grades so strictly. He does give back feedback and wants you to answer an EXACT thing to get a perfect score. If you want to have a life, don't take his class.
One of the worst professors I took. His online class consists of 3 written homeworks, 5 quizzes, and 3 discussion posts a WEEK. A WEEK YALL!!!! He grades so strictly. He does give back feedback and wants you to answer an EXACT thing to get a perfect score. He is the definition of nitpicky. If you want to have a life, don't take his class.
Please, please, PLEASE avoid taking this professor. By far one of the toughest graders @ this school. Very nit-picky, almost wants every written assignment perfect. Btw, you'll be getting 8-13 assignments each week. 20-60 question units/ labs worth 4 points. This professor is not worth your time! Please avoid!! (No opportunities for extra credit)
He's incredibly knowledgeable about the subject and I respect that; however, his level of nitpicky is to the extreme. You'll re-do at least 50% of your written assignments. 60 Q lab for only 2-5 points. Combined with units, labs, quizzes, etc., expect many hours a week committed to this INTRO class. If this is not your major, steer clear.
Pros: Repetitive. If you have insomnia, this class will keep you company Cons: Be ready for over 60 questions for 4 points + Multiple weekly assignments. Tragedy is that d next homework wouldn't unlock till u get a perfect score on the quiz. Multiple rewrites till u use his mind's exact sentences. Would have quit college if it was my first class
If you are looking to get an easy A, Im sorry to tell you but this is not the Professor for you. Now, if you are looking for a challenge and to improve yourself, then choose Professor Noyes. There is a lot of work so you have to put effort, do the readings and do NOT procrastinate. You get unlimited chances, so you can always improve your grade.
I have never had a teacher that gives so much work. It is honestly an interesting class and could be very good if there where not 12 assignments to do a week.
He is very very crazy he gives a lot of work and grades very hard he will you make fun of you to piss you off he is not helpful he makes you know everything is oceanography and makes fun of you if you don’t know the answer he needs to not teach he needs to be working in a lab el Camino needs to fire him he too much don’t take him AT ALL
So much homework, it's ridiculous. Like others said nitpicky with assignments and wants you to use the exact wording he would use. Highly recommend you don't take any class by this professor.
This professor gives A LOT of homework and is very picky with responses. There is also a lot of reading, which I didn't really mind, but the quizzes for these reading assignments are very confusing. His quizzes are also 30+ questions long for very little points. Do not take this class unless you're REALLY, REALLY passionate about Geology.
This class is difficult not because of the subject but because answers to questions have to be to his liking. There's a lot of writing and a textbook would have helped. Reading material was provided to us. The lab is worse due to a lack of instructions. Quizzes can be taken multiple times. I would this class to have a textbook.
The class itself isn't too difficult, but there are a lot of assignments so don't let yourself fall behind. He does want responses to be very specific, but he works with you. Doesn't require attendance and takes late work. Gives very detailed feedback so you know what to correct and how. 10/10 recommend. :)
There is a large amount of homework and the professor is very picky about the answers. There is also a lot of reading, which I didn't mind, but the quizzes on these readings are confusing. His quizzes are also very long (more than 30 questions) and worth very little points.
Literally first week and he's giving me 0's on everything. He barely has an explanation and yet is so picky?? It does not make sense to me. I wish I could drop this class. Im sure chemistry or even physics would be easier.
This class has a lot of homework. If you get behind it is very difficult to catch up. If you decide to take this class please take it along with easy classes. This course was very time consuming for me and I almost did not pass. He does accept late work without deductions. He's a good teacher but its a lot of assignments.
Horrible professor made my life miserable for that semester
Once he made me do a 14 comment back and forth with him over the span of multiple months for a 6 point assignment and still didnt give me all the points. Condescending, passive aggressive. Extreme amount of work that is difficult to catchup with even if you slack a single day worth. Then you have to remember to go back and edit it multiple times.
Mr. Noyes is an amazing educator and very attentive to his students. He spends lots of time carefully reading each assignment and providing helpful feedback. He offers plenty of office hours and extra credit among other opportunities to better understand and practice the subject matter.
I'm not even done with the semester and I'm already dreading this class. He gives SOO many assignments worth 1-10 points and will not award you the full points until you answer all of his ridiculous amount of questions. His grading is not clear and his quizzes are extensively long. Reading is too long and not pertaining to the homework or quizzes
If you are not a geology major, do not take him unless you have A LOT of time. Even an online course should not be this hard. 120 points worth of random questions you need to answer to pass the class and you don't even get full credit until you're losing your mind trying to answer all his questions. I recommend no one to this course.
Don't take him!!! His labs are super long and boring and they are only 5 points each. There is an insane amount of homework each week. At least 4 quizzes and 2 written assignments per week. And if you don't answer exactly what he wants he will not give the credit required to continue to the next homework. He is the worst, trust me.
I don't even know how he still has a job at El Camino. Literally the WORST class I've ever taken. I hope no one signs up because you will regret it. I'm sure Geology majors don't even enjoy this class.
This is the worst teacher I ever had in my life. Not only he's a tough grader, it almost feels like he wants to fail you on purpose. He claims he does all this effort so people will be more passionate and work harder for this class, but all the things he did, done the opposite. I am a Geology major, and I am telling you not to take him!
Don't take his class ever again. Even though it's an online course he is still going to dread you with homework. Do not take him he is very difficult. All the elective homework he assigns it is going to make your head hurt. One of the worst teachers I have taken.
Honestly should have read these ratings before I picked this professor. You will READ LOTS! Do not fall for the you can turn things in later slope. It's LOTS to read, like an abundance to read ! Pick another professor if possible. Let this one be your last resort! I can not wait for this class to end. I hate opening my dashboard to his class.
Pretty straightforward and interesting class. The professor will always offer feedback for a chance to get your assignment grade to 100%.
While the professor has high standards, utilizing resources like Unstuck study alongside the free course materials can help navigate this challenging but worthwhile geology class. Just be ready to put in the effort.
just…don't.
Just don't take this class
This class was lecture and lab so there was more homework. It could easily take just one day to knock out everything for the week. No exams and you can retake the quizzes until you get a perfect score. He makes it easy to get an A by giving tons of good feedback and lets you get points back if you explain stuff to him. Loved this class!
Ton of homework each week, labs in class are fine and teacher is nice and willing to answer questions. Very generous with late work and pretty understanding guy, just hate his online work, takes forever, is confusing, and he is very nitpicky when turning in written work. Attend in person if possible, make up labs are awful.
