weekly quizzes. doesn't know how to teach. THE WORST!
he makes calc harder than is has to be. his quizzes and tests are harder than the hw. if you miss more than two classes in the semester forget about it
New prof, other Thomas John is a diff guy I think. Pretty much all the calc3 students really liked him, he was as clear as you can get. He always had review sessions the night before a test which were really helpful. He's a very handsome middle-aged man. Take his class. Anyone who wasn't in his class complained abt their prof/T.A. so get John!
THOMAS JOHN! THOMAS JOHN! Boring lectures. Accent is kinda funny. Be prepared to do a s**t load of homework. Tests are pretty easy, but you still have to study before. Didn't know him that well because it was a huge lecture class. Three tests and a final, along with tons of online homework that sucks
Overall good professor. Class is pretty easy if you go to class and take notes. His homework is optional, so if you do the homework it will be an even easier class. If not it won't hurt you too much as long as you go to class, pay attention and take notes. Overall good professor and good class.
The greatest MAT prof ever! He is super clear, repeats important things over and over. Key to success is attending lecture, and taking good notes. Extremely helpful and tests are fairly easy if you attend lecture. Tests never have surprises. Amazing Prof!
He tries to set the due date of the homework for at least one class after he discusses the topic, which helps allot. He is very clear and goes out of his way to give short reviews where necessary. 15 times better teacher then some other math professors I had the misfortune of learning from.
He is a nice guy. Comparing to other professor he is one of the best math professor in Syracuse.
Greatest math professor I have ever had in Cuse. He explains everything thoroughly and makes calculus a breeze. He's very helpful when other students ask question in class. His tests are easy if you go and pay attention in class. He takes questions from recitation quizzes and homework problems and puts them as exam questions. Highly recommend him!
One of my favorite professors here at 'Cuse. Took him for MAT 183 as well and he was extremely helpful with any questions students had. He takes questions from previous tests and quizzes for the final so everything is straighforward and nothing is a surprise. Genuinely a nice guy who is always willing to help. Highly Recommended!
One of my favorite professors here at SU. Genuinely cares about how you do and always willing to help if you ask questions. I took him for both MAT 183 and MAT 284 and he was amazing for both as well. Highly recommended!
One of the only good math professors at SU. So lucky I got him for this course. Explains things repeatedly and in a lot of detail so he drills it into your head and makes you understand it. Lecture is a bit boring and not mandatory, but very helpful if you attend. Exams are exactly what he goes over in lecture. No surprises. Recommend!
Thomas John is a pretty cool guy himself and he explains the material pretty well. It's a pretty basic math class so the lectures are boring and not necessary to attend, but you will benefit if you do go because of Professor John.
He is the best mathematics professor I ever had at SU, makes kinda cool jokes and classes aren't that boring. He kept insisting about rating him here, I felt I had to do it...
Professor John is awesome, plain and simple. His MAT 221 section has been nothing short of perfect. He explains everything with remarkable clarity and takes time to emphasize important points. Lecture is boring, but it's Stats class so what would you expect. I've gotten a 100 on everything this semester just by showing up and paying attention.
Willing to answer questions. Tests were clear. Class was easy.
He allows open book tests which is awesome, but if you don't understand the material going into the test, then you will have an extremely hard time during the tests. Only grades in the class are tests and the lab that goes along with the course. The lectures are decent, nothing too interesting or boring. I would still recommend taking the class.
Not a bad guy but the lectures can drag on. Not a very hard course if you're bad at math. He wants you to understand the material as best as he can but its up to you whether you pay attention.
In a pretty large lecture hall, Professor John does a pretty good job of teaching all of the content. If nothing else, he is exceedingly fair as a professor. The class is extremely easy if you're willing to put the minimal effort required to succeed, math student or not. The lecture was boring, but math is boring so that wasn't really a surprise.
Super easy class if you go to lecture. 4 tests and final are super easy and are open text book but need to go to lecture to do well. He's my favorite professor by far and made it clear to understand the content. He uses a chalk board which was actually helpful seeing him writing out the problems and going through them.
Professor John is one of the best professors that Syracuse has to offer. Just by showing up and participating a tiny bit I was able to end with an A-, and i am not a math person. Professor John is great with extra help, and is easily able to get the question/problem to something you can easily understand. Basically show up to class and you pass.
He's very clear so the material is easier to follow. Going into quizzes and exams you know what to expect from what he taught so there's no surprises. Great professor.
I'm not a math person, and going through statistics just by using a textbook (I often use the textbooks to self-teach when it comes to math since the instructors often move too fast) can be a real pain since they're often too verbose to follow. This professor really goes at a level I can understand his lectures are enough for his assignments.
Thomas John is THE MAN. He is super clear in his lectures to the point where you'll be like wow this is so simple why is he even explaining it. He puts lecture notes online, there's no homework, and open book tests with post-its. He's also super nice and understanding if you need help with anything.
He explains the material really well and the class is super easy dont really have to show up just read blackboard PowerPoints.
Very nice guy and explains the new material in great depth so you can really understand. Really a great professor and cares about students. Is very fair and will accommodate fairly to his students.
Awesome professor! It really depends on the type of student you are whether you like him and do well or not. Took his class at 8am and went to every lecture and he ultimately gave me extra credit on my exam because he knew I cared enough to show up. He's passionate and cares that students learn and is so willing to help! I will miss him!
One of the worst professors I've had at Syracuse. He is a genius, but he is not willing to help his students.
awesome! examples in class R used on tests, graded easily, super nice, great teacher (gives LOTS OF EXAMPLES AND EXPLAINS IN DIFFERENT WAYS SO DIFFERENT TYPES OF LEARNERS UNDERSTAND-- seemA redundant sometimes but HELPS!!!) show up, go to every class, and you are okay. OPEN BOOK --> BUY BOOK ASAP BECAUSE THEY WILLLLLLLL RUN OUT AND U NEED FOR TEST!
Amazing teacher, I was scared going into college to take math, but as soon as I walked into my 8am with "Tommy John" I knew that the class was going to be great. The man is a genius at being able to explains the subjects and is very good with his students. Please take this man's class, he is the best math professor at Syracuse.
Professor John tends to not explain well in his lectures. I have attended every lecture, done my homework, gone to recitation and I have yet to understand a single topic. DO NOT take his classes if you are not a math person and want to pass. math class
Professor John makes this class very easy. He basically gives you the test material in lecture. If you attend class and recitation and work a little bit outside of class, this class should be easy enough. Yes, you have to study for tests, but if you put a little effort into this class, you'll definitely get the grade you deserve.
Professor John makes it so there are absolutely no surprises on tests and quizzes. Simply make sure you understand example problems given during lecture, and you are set for quizzes and tests. Don't show up late to class and make sure your phone is on silent and you shouldn't have a problem with this professor.
Mr. John tries to make his lectures as easy as possible, but this means he is redundant and boring. However, take his class if all you need is to cross off a requirement, bc his tests and hw are manageable. Make sure you arm yourself with coffee for his 8 am tho, his lectures get old real quick. DON'T BUY THE TEXTBOOK! IT'S USELESS.
Dr. John is one of the best professors in the math department. He can be intimidating at first, but go to his office hours! He is extremely welcoming and helpful. He is very fair and doesn't throw curve balls on quizzes or exams. The class requires a lot of work, but once you put that in he makes it easy to succeed!!
His lectures are so boring. Maybe it's because I'm not good at math or maybe it's because I had his class at 8am but whatever it was I HATED this class. Retaking the course with a different professor. Even if you hate math or dread waking up early, GO to class so that you won't have to retake it or stick with a grade that trashes your GPA.
I loved him. He writes every word he speaks on a piece of paper and projects it which is a bit boring but as a teacher he takes his time and goes through very fair examples. The homework is helpful (not too much) and actually helps you prepare. I had to study but I heard Calc 2 was the hardest calc and he made it fair. I hope to have him again
Despite having an 8am my freshman year, I really enjoyed having Tommy John as my early morning professor. He made the lessons really easy to understand and despite having a huge class, he would answer anyone who raised their hands. If you are forced to take MAT221 like I was, I recommend taking it with him. Great professor
Show me another!
He doesn't explain anything and is very hard to get in contact with. He doesn't seem to care about students and if they need help. We are always behind on work which makes the homework very difficult. He also just tells us to look back at the notes for help but his notes don't help at all.
Spends 90% of class lecturing us on his teaching style, how he won't repeat himself, how we need to learn by ourselves, be more independent, don't ask me questions, blah blah blah. 10% is spent throwing math problems at us, out of order, with messy handwriting and dismissive explanations.
The worst teacher I've ever had in my entire life. Not only does he not know how to teach, but he's just mean. This is not only my first semester of college but it isn't in person either and he's saying I get a zero on the math midterm for not submitting my answers as a PDF but rather a JPeg. He teaches class with zero effort and can't even teach.
This course is by far the worst I have taken at Syracuse. With a name like Tommy John, I would have assumed this dude would be cool. However, he is the opposite of 'cool'. He spends half the lecture explaining things unrelated to math and then follows with yelling at students for asking questions in the lecture chat. Worst class ever!
Worst professor ever. This is my first semester at college and I was already nervous about taking a math class cause Im not good at it. He just makes it even worse and its even harder since its online. His notes are messy and doesnt answer questions and gets upset if we do. Honestly he just scolds us most of the time.
DO NOT!!! Take this class if you can help it. Taking this my first semester was a grave mistake, Professor John is unhelpful, unclear in his lectures, does not take time to answer questions in class, and when he does chose to answer questions, he is condescending in answering them. Very poor teacher and would not recommend
If you want to take his class, you shouldn't. Otherwise, taking his class is the worst decision in your life. He never helps students and respond to your emails. His handwriting is too awful. Besides, he just taught some of the parts of math in which he thinks important. After you finished this course, you even do not know what is the statistic.
Worst teacher I've ever had. Belittles students for asking questions in lectures. Refuses to answer emails "out of principle." Announces new assignments then doesn't post them until the due date. I've learned absolutely nothing from him and his lectures, if you take this class be ready to self-teach all of the course material.
Lecture heavy. Drones on and on without stopping for questions. Impossible to reach outside of class. Unclear about instructions.
Given that everything was online, he overestimated himself as well as us students. He claims that he is not at fault if his students fail because he believes that learning online is no different than in person. He's also very rude to students and doesn't allow questions during lecture until told so. If u can, please save yourself from Prof John!!
The worst person I have ever encountered. Today in lecture he brought up and laughed at his rate my professors ratings, his highest this year is 1/5. I have worked countless hours trying to learn this class on my own because I can't tell you one thing he has taught me and still needed to withdraw. I actually thinks he enjoys watching us struggle.
I've been an A student my whole life. I got an A on the first exam where it was fairly straightforward information. However, the second this material gets beyond common sense, you're screwed. Professor John's lectures make understanding which material is actually important incredibly difficult, and I got a C on the second exam. Run away from him
Professor John is not only a bad teacher, but I think he genuinely enjoys seeing his students struggled. At the beginning of the semester he told us he hated questions during class and the compared himself to celebrity saying he "couldn't perform for everyone." As an A student my whole life, I genuinely struggled with this course. Run.
the worst. nothing else to say
If the math on exams aren't completed the way he wants it, you will not receive credit. He was very condescending to many students if they were asking to review a topic. It was not a safe learning environment. Our class started with roughly 300 people and by the end, only 80-90 students were left.
Makes it VERY clear he doesn't want to answer questions from students although his lectures are hard to follow and won't take the time in class to make sure it's understood. Will also scold students if it was "in the syllabus" or previously mentioned when it would take him less time and effort to simply answer the question
If you are in Whitman and get this professor, drop it. Lectures aren't helpful at all and the notes are messy, and prof seems to be making an effort to humiliate people when they have questions. He makes it very clear he doesn't want to answer questions and is incredibly unhelpful in all aspects- be prepared to go to tutoring or teach yourself
One month into my college career and I am already done with this class & Tommy John. As an A student my whole life, I am genuinely scared I am going to fail this course. Truly one of the worst people I have ever come across. Sent us an email and ended it with, It is the 3rd decade of the 21st century. One should be comfortable with technology!
MAT 221 is what you make of it. Math was never my strong suit; I needed to make a concerted effort for this class just in order to pass. A majority of the course grade derives from exams and post-lecture quizzes, so make sure to drill yourself with problems if you aren't confident with the material. If you invest enough time, you will be okay.
I am writing this now, in the middle of semester, as a break from his homework sets that I have been doing since Monday of this week (it's Saturday) because I am so angry. He is genuinely the worst teacher I have ever had and my high school teachers barely showed up. He gives you no formulas and explains absolutely nothing. This man is terrible.
This dude just gets it, he is so clear of what he expects, no ambiguity. Just do the work and you will be golden
This class was awful. He was not an understanding professor, got mad at students when they asked questions about the material. The tests were tough. Attendance isnt mandatory though so just teach the material to yourself and youll do okay.
He was terrible and the worst teacher at Syracuse
When I first read the Rate My Professor reviews on Professor John I was terrified. The class is extremely difficult, but if you go to class, put in the work, and take advantage of the tutoring resources offered, you will pass. MAT 221 is brutal and requires a lot of hard work, but the class is not as hard as these reviews make it out to be!
Prof. John gets a lot of hate on here but the truth is that if u want to actually understand Stats he is the best option. He is mean and will not talk to u out of class, but he will explain the concepts in the best way possible. There are a lot of HWs and quizzes, but doing them really helps you understand everything. Just do work, ask TA, & STUDY!
Quite possibly the worst teacher I have ever had. I'm good at math and even I hated this course. Not very responsive to questions, especially if it is something he has previously said. 30% of students failed one of the tests this year and he still refused to curve the test. Only take this class if necessary.
Honestly did not find this guy that bad. The material itself is awful but I'm not a math person. He tried to teach it the best he could and I learned enough to get a decent grade. Definitely would take him over other MAT 221 prof- Au. Heard from friends that she's so much worse. Count your blessings with John.
This man is WAY overly hated. He's a great professor because he sets his expectations for us very early on and sticks to them. The way he teaches if very easy to understand and the exams are just like the problems from the quizzes, which are just like the examples given during class. Put in the work and don't complain, you will do well.
Professor John structures his class with a sink or swim approach. Reach out for help the minute you start struggling, as exams and quizzes basically form your grade. Typically 50+ homework problems each week, with trickier questions than exams. Reviewing older tests are helpful, as is CLASS tutoring. This class is intense, expect to work hard.
A lot of people hate on him but he's actually a pretty decent professor. This course is easy if you're good at math. Homework will prepare you very well for the exams. He has office hours and he's always willing to help. You do need to spend time trying to understand the information. By far the best stats I professor at cuse.
Not as bad as he is made out to be but the lectures are very long and he struggles to keep class engaged. It was hard to keep up with 2 quizzes and one homework a week as well as the exams.
Professor John kept repeating that this course wasn't "Thomas John's Preschool" and that he shouldn't have to explain how to access or do the homework, despite it being our first week of classes.
Professor John is absolutely awful! It wasn't until this class that i had a teacher i genuinely hated. John never gives formulas so its impossible to learn how to solve problems and his notes are all over the place. The guy is straight up rude and could care less about his students succeeding. I have never had a teacher so unwilling to help.
Very hard to understand in lectures and is not good at explaining the material. I had to go to tutoring every week and I still could not pass. Highly encourage looking for another professor if you struggle with math.
stay as far away as possible if you can. if his class is a requirement....im so sorry.
If you can please take 121 instead. This class is the hardest class I have ever taken and caused me so much stress. Its an 8am lecture and Im just awful at math so it was a bad combo. But seriously avoid this class its just really hard.
DO NOT TAKE HIM!!! Worst professor I've ever had at Syracuse. Got a tutor and still managed to get a D in a class.
He doesn't know how to teach, he assigns SO MUCH homework on multiple different platforms, there are online quizzes after EVERY SINGLE lecture and the way he conducts his lectures are so disorganized. His notes are a bunch of words and make no sense. Don't take this class he's the worst math teacher ever, and I've had some pretty bad ones.
The weighted class average is an F. Let me repeat myself...... F. At some point that responsibility has to fall on the teacher and his style. Professor John is the least understanding professors I've ever had, and that's coming from someone that's taken some brutal teachers at SU. Very frustrating.
I literally never write these reviews but Thomas John is the worst professor I've ever had. The class average is a 68. No one understands what this dude is talking about. There's a ton of homework on multiple different platforms, quizzes after every class, tests are worth a ton. And he's an awful teacher. Do whatever you can to avoid his class.
Class average is a 50% at the withdrawal date. Exam averages have both been 43%. Most quiz averages are under 65%. Is refusing to curve anything or make anything easier.
This was GENUINELY the worst class (MAT 221) I have ever taken in my LIFE. P. John is an awful teacher & tests were extremely hard. Almost half of the class fails every test, and he doesn't seem to care. Unless you HAVE to take a class he teaches, DON'T. It's incredible that for all the AMAZING professors at Syracuse, he fell through the cracks.
a TON of homework, tests are meticulously graded, unclear teaching, talks in circles, hard to understand
3 quizzes a week, speaks down to students, and is a miserable prick, I told him my family had covid so I wouldn't be able to take the recitation quiz and he told me oh well. I would never recommend any self-respecting person to ever take his math 221
Lets students drop, withdraw and incomplete if they choose so. puts out reminders on those deadlines and signs of forms without making a fuss
The class is designed in a way that many people will fail, he lectures either way slower than necessary or way too fast through complicated units. Don't waste your time trying to understand what he's saying. I don't understand any of what it is I'm actually calculating, and I have a B+; that's not learning at all. A waste of time, money, sanity
the best thing about the class is u dont have to go. when the prof isnt going on a rant making a student feel bad hes using all the vocab without explaining what it means. class is useless just read the overpriced textbook
A little all over the place. Takes a while to get to the point. Knows the subject very well, but has trouble explaining it to students that need more help. Pro tip: don't go to the lecture, join the video call or watch the RECORDING later in the day.
Awful professor. If you have a chance, run away! Please don't take his class! His voice is muffled and unclear, consistently demonstrates the definition, and uses fewer examples. TO BE HONEST, his lecture is completely useless for most students.
No one willingly takes this course. Students are almost always forced to take his class due to their major. This ultimately results in a great deal of struggle for Falk and Newhouse majors (who aren't always proficient in Math). If there's another option for this course, then take what you can get.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU DON'T HAVE TO! I would have failed had I not withdrawn. He was never accessible outside of class, didn't answer emails, and didn't provide feedback on wrong exam answers. The quizzes he gave had concepts that we didn't even cover yet. Overall, not worth it. Take 121 or 221 with another prof.
Lectures are illegible and inaudible. Lots of homework for first class. Beware of pop-up quiz. Not a good recommendation to students who study statistics for first time.
This man is not understanding students' problems and clearly should be fired if 2/3rds of his class is unable to score over a 60%. Do not ever take tommy john if you want to have a manageable workload. 3 weekly quizzes worth 30% of your grade. I could not recommend taking him in any circumstance
He is so BAD, run away!!! Stats is not hard bc I took mat121 and got an A but when I took Thomas John class, I failed and he's the worst teacher ever, he's inconsiderate and I cannot understand him during lectures.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Take MAT 121 instead. Spare yourself. I read these reviews and did not believe them because I am good at math. Boy was I wrong...Even if you do good on the homework and quizzes, somehow the tests are harshly graded. Only class I've ever had to withdraw from. Took MAT 121 the following semester with Bourhim and got an A.
Just do not take his class if you do not have to, harsh grader and has no pity for students
horrible professor you can't understand a word he says or read his handwriting. 3 quizzes a week with a ton of homework. I am typically pretty good at math but thomas john makes it so much harder then it needs to be. Do not take this class
I did not enjoy or really understand Professor John's lectures until I decided to stop showing up and watching the lecture recording later that day. (THANK YOU FOR RECORDING THEM). A lot of the lecture is kind of pointless and I learned more from doing the homework. I am naturally good at math, but if you aren't, maybe look for someone else.
Attendance isn't mandatory and he does Zoom meetings for every lecture, posts the notes and video recordings. Homework isn't bad, about 2 per week and unlimited tries on each problem. Quizzes are awful, they tank your grade because u get 10 mins and only 2 questions, and there's 2 quizzes each week. Also, there's a quiz after the first "lecture".
Honestly he is not a bad teacher it is just a difficult class. This class requires a lot of attention,he gives 2 hw/quizzes a week which should help you see how your learning is in that class,it is graded. He provides online recorded lectures which will make you feel like class is optional GO TO CLASS will improve grades. Overall he's a good teacher.
Lectures are recorded and accessible online. One quiz after each lecture and almost one homework each week. If you are expecting an easy course with every point given to you without any effort, then this should not be your choice. If you actually want to learn and improve, this is it. Important to review old exams and example questions provided.
He's not as bad as everyone says he is. I was sick a whole week and he matched the two quizzes I missed to my exam grade and gave me a 100% on my recitation assignment. He's very understanding, you just have to talk to him about it. Class can be challenging but if you go to the CLASS tutoring groups held weekly you should be okay.
Grade very weighted on the 2 question quizzes after every lecture, that are often multi part, with only 10 minutes to complete. Miss one, it tanks your grade. Very rude to students who have questions, in person and email. Takes too long to respond to questions, and students who ask are subject to ridicule. Handwriting is messy and near illegible.
if you have not required for the course, just not take it.
He's really not a bad guy, but he does a bad job teaching the class. He talks the whole time without covering much information. Everything he teaches is either stuff we should already know based on the prerequisites, or stuff we could figure out very easily. The class is not difficult but a waste of time.
Not a horrible guy but is a lackluster professor. Records and posts lectures so copying what he does gets you far. But he is vague, leaves out key details, & often fails to explain concepts adequately. You will struggle on many assignments & have to teach yourself. Occasionally cracks a joke but is mostly rigid. Rebukes harshly for phone usage.
Not a bad teacher! He explains the concepts in class and if you pay attention you will do good. If you have a question that was covered in lecture he will say watch the lecture video and if it wasn't covered (or you need more help) he will help you. He wants his students to do good and gives advice on how to succeed (he won't feed you the A).
Absolutely awful. His lectures are unorganized and honestly just disrespectful for his students. He uses a spiral notebook and writes about 5-10 words a page before he flips to the next. Thats how you learn. He doesnt give you any practice problems instead he just makes them up as he goes. When it comes time for exams there is no study guide.
this dude hates his life and makes it his students problem
IF HE IS TEACHING THIS CLASS WAIT THE NEXT SEMESTER FOR A DIFFERENT PROFESSOR!!!
Would not take this course again!!!!! Terrible lectures that did not help learn anything.
Has to be one of the worst professors at Syracuse. Soulless teaching, dumps his brain on the paper with no clear explanation or anything, and the tests are complete bs. No study guide, no guide on what to study at all, just old homework's and quizzes. Oh and not to mention the tests look nothing like anything you probably studied. Steer clear.
He made it very difficult to understand the material. Most learning was done by myself. Not necessarily even the hardest class, but his teaching style is awful. Difficult to engage in, unclear voice/writing, and timed quizzes right after the class. Fair to say that that's sorta unreasonable. I mean the material itself takes time to master.
DO. NOT. TAKE. His notes are hard to understand, and the only way you will do well is if you have a good TA. He doesn't explain concepts well, and barely uses examples in class.
Mostly taught myself. I had a good TA and was able to learn from her, but lectures were unclear and his notes were impossible to read. The timed quizzes after each lecture were hard but we did have plenty of time for the homework. Overall, not the worst, but definitely be prepared for a good amount of work outside of class.
Stats with Thomas John was awful. He could barely teach, and most tests covered topics we never learned. His lectures were confusing, and asking questions only made it worse. The class made me hate stats — total waste of time with a teacher who shouldn't even be teaching.
He is terrible. The tests are 86% things we have never done before. I have never ever gotten a C in my life and this class is genuinely killing me. I am trying my hardest and can not do well.
He did not cover the material needed for tests and gave unnecessary theoreticals without ever showing the actual steps of calculation needed. Tests were very confusing and were nothing like lectures or homework. His notes are not helpful at all and often confused me even more as they were just his thoughts on paper with few numbers or examples.
This guy is a terrible teacher. Ur gonna end up teaching urself everything. This is not a good beginning math course because he does not explain well, and when asked questions, does not know how to thoroughly answer them. Do not recommend!!!!!
This is a doable class if you are already good at math. Stats 221 should not be this hard. He grades like he's satan. And to his replies citing all of the As students get, please put up how many people fail or withdraw. it'll be even more then Orgo.
Not a tough class but a tough teacher, I went to every lecture and he just rambles about non relevant things ALOT and makes not a lot of sense. If you try to reach to him for help expect a very passive aggressive almost argumentative email telling you to just look at the class notes. Do NOT recommend.
The class was challenging, but the professor is clearly passionate about his work and teaching students. He is willing to work with students and support them. The exams makeup majority of your grade and is based on the lectures.
Overall, a very difficult class with a ton of homework, quizzes, and very difficult exams. The first 2 midterm exams can be very challenging, but the final is easier. The lowest homework and quiz grades get dropped. The class has a slight curve.
Honestly I liked Dr. John and this class. His quizzes and tests are extremely straightforward and are fairly simple if you study beforehand. Lectures are recorded and posted afterwards and attendance isn't mandatory. You have to study to do well but the assessments are easy enough and the resources are there so getting a good grade is doable.
I withdrew after realizing the course wasn't needed for my major. The class is difficult when you know you're struggling without asking for help and not using the resources provided. He provided very helpful notes for every lecture, including a recording of the lecture. The questions on exams and homework are found in lecture notes. He's great.
He gets *way* too much hate. He is stern and he very much expects you to heed his instructions, but he cares a lot about the material and that you understand the material. Prof. John gives you everything you need to be successful. Go to office hours! He is very helpful one-on-one.
This is just a terrible professor, tried to ask him a quick question after the lecture, and he immediately put on his mask and told me to ask the TA. He uses two platforms for quizzes and hw, which is just pain. I withdrew and took the class in the summer and got an A. There's no way i was even getting a B+ and learn anything with this dude.
awful. you can barely hear him speak and his notes do not help.
If you plan to/have to take this class, find a God to pray to, seriously. He is so quiet and incoherent in lectures to the point that social media can teach me math better than he can. Ridiculous grading style- You can get a question right but they'll mark it wrong because you didn't do it his way. He's crazy sassy for no reason at all. Good luck.
He's not a very good lecturer. I learned more from the once a week recitations than I did from weeks of attendance and slide review. He's also pretty rude when you ask for help or clarification, and spends roughly half the lecture complaing about the students before actuall starting to teach. You're better off taking the course with someone else.
Lectures are not very helpful, the recitations helped me more than his class. When I asked him a question in office hours, instead of giving me the answer and helping me, he told me to go review the notes. Talks very quiet in class, sit close. Only two exams and the final which were hard but a lot of the problems were similar to homework problems.
