Easy, fun, iteresting class on Pro Engineering
Good teacher & fun. Tryes to cram alot of work in a litle time. ProAny thing sux
Bad-ass class. Teacher talks quietly. Fun program to work with. TA's are helpful

advice: take notes.

Find the class that Luis teaches and you will be fine. Dont be stupid: Take Notes.
good teacher for teaching proE. Well, at least you don have other choices in SDSU for this class.
One of the best professors I've had at SDSU. He tells you what you need to know, so take good notes and you should do fine. He prepares you with every detail you need to know for the Pro/E job market. Fun projects. Pay attention to detail.
This is a great class...Pro E is somthing useful. Tom is a great professor and knows his stuff! You are here to learn and thats what you do in this class, learn!
Tom is the best in PRO E!!! If you take notes, you will get an A easily. Actualy, even if you don't take notes, it is still an A:)
Best teacher ever had. Easy to understand. Funny guy too.
Great teacher. Come to class everyday. Sit in the front and try to get ahead (ie: start problems early.) Ask questions, and DON'T get behind in this class. I finished the final projects early and gave me extra time to study for other classes finals.
Good guy, good teacher. Don't fall too far behind on the homework, it's hard to catch up. Pretty easy grade.
Easy class if your ahead. Tom tries to be funny, but to the average joe his jokes seem annoying. He doesn't seem to help everyone the same. If you suck up to him and laugh at his lame humor, your set. All I've got to say is Thank God for TA's.
Very easy class, especially for those who are stereotypically "good with computers." Just don't procrastinate. Also of interest is the ability to work from home remotely without having to purchase anything... (requires knowledge of linux howev
Cool Guy, Cool Class, just fun, nicest guy.
Class is easy - starts off slow but gets really busy at the end so stay caught up. Just pay attention in class and be awake-he appreciates it and is easy on you if you listen during lecture.
Fun class. Go to class and take notes during his lecture. Laugh at his jokes, he likes that.
great teacher, as long as you don't chatter in the back of the room. entertaining and knowledgeable.
Nice guy, class is easy if you go to the lecture and take notes.
Really good class, as long as you stay on top of the assignments, and get the projects done ontime, you will get an A. It is however, easy to get behind. One of the nicest engineering faculty, he actually cares that his students learn the material that he is teaching.
Tom is the man, just go to class because getting behind will hurt you.
Tom exemplifies what SDSU needs more of; teachers that actually know how to teach. The class is easy and fun, but don't fall behind because that stuff will snowball. He goes through EXACTLY what you want and if you have enough brainpower at 8am to remember all of what he says, it's an easy A.
Not a tough class. Stay on top of things and its easy. long lectures though
Very good teacher, interesting subject,**** out of luck if you fall behind. Too much work and long lectures. Take the class and enjoy, but remember don’t fall behind.

Hes the best teacher ever.
Tom is a great teacher. He know's his stuff in and out, and he will do his best to make you LEARN it, not just MEMORIZE it. He's a joker too, so he keeps things interesting.
Time consuming classes. Sometimes professor and lectures helpful, sometimes no help at all.
this instructor is awsome, wont find anyone like him in the engineering department. helps out alot and keeps you sane with his humor. take advantage cause engineering dosent get any easier.
Best Teacher Ever
Has been nothing less than nice. Very easy to complete assignments in that class and I strongly recommend him ONLY if you retain a strong passion for mechanical engineering. Sometimes the lectures drag on, upwards of an hour, but there is abundant work time. Teaches more in one semester than you'll learn in 4 years at another university!
Very cool teacher. Deff the best i've had in college. funny, and very helpful. you should take this class just for fun, plus a gpa booster. just do the easy class work and you'll get an A.
the best engineering teacher at state... if you found him or his class to be hard. QUIT engineering now, because it will be a large up hill battle
very good teacher prepares you for the realworld
I WOULD RECOMMEND!!! Easy class, just do your work and you'll be fine. I only earned a B- because I skimped out on the final project I would've had an A+ if I did the project. Subject is so good, that this professor had convinced me to change to an ME major. If you have problems with this class, ENGINEERING IS NOT FOR YOU, GET OUT.
Tom is an awesome teacher. He really cares and loves what he does.
best teacher ever. he is really a treat and you will not be upset about him. he is fun and clear and lots of help. he feels like a drinking buddy when your talking to him. the class is easy. IF YOU DONT GET IT ARE STRUGGLING ITS ONLY GONNA GET WORSE IN ENGINEERING.
Awesome teacher, he's very helpful and approachable
He is a very good professor and cares/knows a lot about his subject. His voice did put me to sleep many times though, but once he is done with the lecture you can just ask him anything you missed while you were sleeping.
He's great & if you miss one day of class, no sweat he puts everything online. He tries to be funny so laugh at his jokes for his sake but overall he's awesome.
really easy class. tom knows his stuff. my only problem was that he goes of onto tangents (if he didnt it would be an 3 hour per week class). but still fun
Great guy. Keeps class fun and interesting while teaching the material very well. He give a lot of help if you ask for it. Quizzes were the only part of the class where you should study some, but the CAD stuff not hard, but grading not proportional to the total amount of mistakes that one could make.
Whoa shouldn't have smoked that stuff back in high school, Tom is funny and helpful
Probally one of the worst professors I have ever had. When you ask him for help, he points his finger to someone else to help you. There is not a textbook for the Pro E software, and his lectures are very vague. If you could avoid him, then by all means take a different professor. You will learn much more! AVOID!!!
Nice guy, but not the most helpful chap. TA does most of the work, answering questions and such. Lectures are easy to follow. Class takes up a lot of time, but isn't very hard if you go to the lectures and to your parts right away.
TOM IS A G! Just buy Pro-E and solidworks at the beginning of me101 and use it through 102 and you wont have to go to class(unless there is a quiz) because his walkthroughs are awesome. If you didnt like this class or had an absurd amount of trouble with it you should not be an engineer. Class got me a summer job doing autocad BANK
Some of his lectures can be very long and boring. And if you don't catch something, you will might have to ask someone sitting next to you how to fix something when you get stuck. He isn't usually around to ask questions and his tutorials don't cover everything.
Tom is the only professor that I had that actually really taught me something. Some people don't like him because he won't spoon feed you, he just encourages you to figure stuff out on your own or by using the people around you, just like in the real world. I haven't had any other ME prof, but I'm sure Tom's the best one.
Tom is the awesome x 100. He doesn't spoon feed you, but his online tutorials help you out EXACTLY where you might get stuck. The pace of the class is perfect...projects get progressively harder until CAD is cake. I agree with everyone else though, if you "can't handle it" (as tom would say) get out of engineering...like right now.
I liked ME 101 a lot better. The class was hard towards the end, because the outlines weren't good and he spent an hour and a half lecturing a few times towards the end, giving us little time to do our projects.
Tom is by-far the most valuable instructor SDSU has to offer--he is clear, he is prepared, he is funny, he will help you become a great engineer. Besides that, he is EXTREMELY HELPFUL outside of his classes--ie, if you need help with the modeling of some other classes' project, he'll help direct you how to do it. The man deserves a raise!
One of the best teachers I had this semester he made me enjoy coming to class. He made the subject very interesting plus he can be funny during his lectures.
Yeah brah, like Tom is totally helpful. Soooo dank! he will only want to tell you things once, so write notes. Easy grader. gives plenty of time to shoot the gnar!!!!! Totally recommend! Sa-whate!
tom will get you ready for the real world atmosphere. which is if you have a question you ask your neighbor but if you can understand something he will gladly help you with any question you may have.
one word, superman
Awesome professor. Learned so much
Reaaaaaaaaaaally funny
very funny, speaks Japanese
This class is super easy but helpful at the same time. He explains everything you need to know to do the projects and doesnt waste your time with busy work. No homework except short reading near beginning. You can leave class early if you finish early. Easy A
This guy is awesome. It's super easy to get an A in the class and during his lectures if the class is stared to stop paying attention or falling asleep he'll start talking about something totally random like his japanese wife or sign language. very fun class.
Very clear and helpful teacher, definitely knows his stuff. Reasonable with project/homework due dates. Has all the answers! Definite easy A.
Class is super easy he doesnt ever push you too hard and the assignments are more geared towards teaching you how to actually use the software instead of just busy book work. He keeps all classes upbeat and fun and due dates are all easy to make. the only way to get a bad grade is to not show up
Awesome guy, actually TEACHES, and if you listen to him then this class will be extremely easy. Regardless though, easy A class and very entertaining teacher.
Best teacher ever had. Easy to understand. Funny guy too.
his jokes are not funny and his lectures drag on, but it is the easiest A ever.
It's a fun and interesting class. Lots of work but lots of time to do it
Really good teacher
Tom is a great teacher, as long as you go to lecture there's no reason you shouldn't get an A.
Class was awesome! Tom is the Man! Don't think you can skip more than 2 classes and still get an A. The class moves quick but as long as you pay attention you will be fine. He has even put up flash videos of how to do each assignment step by step! Learned a ton if into!
Awsome teacher who really knows his stuff. Very helpful and will take the time to make sure you know whats going on. The only way to fail is to not do the work or if you just screw around in class.
Tom is awesome, and his TA's are the best. If you have a question then you weren't paying attention in class. ALWAYS GO TO CLASS!! If you start skipping classes you're screwed because it all builds on itself. BE NICE TO THE TA'S because they are the ones that grade you so don't mess with them. You will pass if you do the work like the book says.
By far one of the greatest professors out there, the only reason you can fail this class is if you don't show up or your too lazy to do the work.TA's are the best and very helpfull lectures make your work alot easier.
Boring. Was hard to pay attention in class because he went on tangents. Self taught by other students and the TAs. If you ask him for help he won't help you due to budget cuts and leaves it all to the TAs. Was taken because I had to, if it was not a req would not recommend Prof but instead his TAs.
Tom's got a weird but awesome sense of humor. Class requires some patience but overall is pretty fun. TAs are extremely helpful so make sure to be friendly!
Fantastic professor, who teaches a class that actually should be worth even more money than I paid. He doesn't help you that much after his lecture, because if he did, then everyone would get an A without learning anything, because the modeling requires you to learn how to problem solve on your own. Do the work= "A" in this class.
Great professor that really loves what he is teaching. He will answer any questions you have that the TA, who is at every lecture, can't help with. You will use the lab book pretty much every day, but the text book almost never. Just make sure your assignments look exactly like the lab book before calling a grader over, final grade is mostly labs.
Entertaining, Love it when he talks about his asian wife and the good old days
Coolest teacher ever!!!
If your attendance is good and you ask for help when you need it, you'll do fine. Keep in mind the workload is not difficult but the amount of work is deceptively large for a two unit course (but since this class teaches the skills that are most applicable to securing an internship or job, there isn't much point in complaining).
So hot omg would fail so i can take teh class again lol~ But seriously, this guy is top notch at SDSU. All ME majors need to take him, and he is one of the best at SDSU. Easy class, and don't worry about hw or grading, just attend and he shows you exactly how to do the material. Plus, you'll make friends, and they can usually bail you out.
He's so dreamy, I just go to his class every time and watch him, making googly eyes and hoping he notices me. It's a real shame he's married!
Probably the awesomest professor I've had in college. He really loves what he does and he wants everyone who's willing to do some work to do well. Show up to class and get checked off on time
Awesome Professor! Always stayed late and kept the lab open for people who dont have the programs at home. Extreamly managible class if you simply come to class and pay attention : )
He keeps the subject matter pretty simple and focuses on getting a wide coverage of electrical concepts. It's pretty easy to pay attention but he hates the classroom and his penmanship is atrocious.
He is just too funny!
The best teacher I've had in college
Very easy
Best teacher at state
Yet another awesome Tom course. Don't worry about taking this, it is super easy if you attend class.
Super easy course and great professor, just attend class and pay attention, you'll gain so much!
He is one of my favorite teachers!!
Great! A+, highly recommend
The class itself is not very hard as long as you keep up with assignments and show up to class. It's easy, fun, and you learn a lot! Johnston is the best!!!
This class is VERY helpful & prepares you for your future. Tom always has fun stories to share with the class. He tells you all that you need to know and makes sure youre prepared for any quiz, you just have to pay attention and do the work! Sometimes he can seem scary to approach but he's actually not that scary so dont be afraid to do so:-)
good course! use your classmates
Great teacher if you can pay attention the entire class period.
The Best professor ever
Great Teacher. Really cares about his students. Tells interesting life stories to break of class.
Professor Johnston is the ideal "professional". He cares about learning, and learning the right stuff. More of a hands on teacher than anyone you will ever encounter ad SDSU. Highly recommend you take as many classes with him as possible.
Tom is very nice and you can tell he is there for the students. He cares about your work, and wants to prepare you for the work force. The whole course consist of learning ProE and Solidworks. Class is mandatory because we will build parts in the lab and he makes them due the next class. Very easy course.
Tom is the man! Super straight forward and the most reasonable professor in the me department at state!
Tom is great! This class is an easy A as long as you go to class. He tells stories in class, he's real, he cares about our education. Tom is da mannn!
VERY EASY. show up, listen to lecture, do the work, leave an hour or two early. Not much else.
Stupid lectures that take days because he gets distracted. Everything is just regurgitating what he does. Not finding your own solution to a problem.
He can get off topic, but I always find his anecdotes and stories hilarious, so it's not a problem in my opinion.
Tom is a great professor, he always tells funny jokes during lectures and is very friendly. He's helpful and approachable when you have questions. Get to know him and sit near the front, you'll have a better time in the class. Highly recommended, my favorite professor so far after one year at SDSU.
What more is there to say? Tom teaches this class very well. ME majors will use the two CAD programs he teaches in any job in this field. In this class you will do projects similar to that in ME 101 but a bit more difficult and with just a little less guidance. Very important class, and just be sure to start your final project as early as you can.
Tom is the realest instructor I've had. His class is long, but he keeps it interesting with funny tangents and usually doesn't take the full time. He walks you through making the parts and makes wise, caring comments. You need the book, but it's cheap. Easy quizzes and good projects. Come to class for good times and help from the aides or a friend.
He is not that great of a professor. He assumes that his students already know how to use the software for his class. The class is very easy and you dont really have to attend to receive a good grade.
If you are new to the software, going to class is a must-do, but going to class is not mandatory unless there's a quiz (about 3) or a project is due. As long as you turn in your projects and exercises you'll be good. Overall, the professor is very helpful and so are the TA's.
Tom was a great teacher to introduce someone to solid modeling software. His lectures are fairly lengthy however the material is covered clearly and the stories that are sprinkled in are great natural breaks in the class that also offer a laugh or useful lesson. the workload is fairly low if you are computer literate, I only need to work in class.
Tom is a god among men. When he is not pouring his heart and soul into spreading the work about mechanical engineering knowledge, he is inspiring the youth by recounting his time on this earth. Quite possibly the best solid modelling instructor that has ever existed.
I don't know what this guy below me is going on about, but I have to agree that Tom is a fantastic instructor. The only negative thing you could say about him is that he goes off on tangents while lecturing, but who doesn't like a great story? The work is easy and he provides instructions. We had to do a project, but you should be fine. Choose him!
ME204 is just a lab where you learn about a specific software. Basically, just show up to class and you get your daily points. Very easy class.
Straightforward and fun class. Show up and follow along and you'll get pretty much everything.
Amazing guy, really funny and always had good stories to tell. Has instructional videos for EVERY SINGLE assignment. He wants you to do well, he wants you to be a competent engineer, and he is very clear with his instructions.
tom is a great guy and cares about his students. just show up and listen to the lectures, its an easy class. its a long class but 90% of the time you can leave within the first hour and a half
Avoid him. Not a good teacher, give most of the work for TAs. You have to pay $75 for a stupid website which would be done by blackboard.
Nice and easy, if you are an AE or ME, take Johnston. Super easy class, videos for every assignment. Show up and get an A,
He is a good guy
Homework is very easy, he puts up videos that walk you through it step by step. Found his lectures pretty boring as he has a tendency to go off topic for long periods of time, but it's still important to show up. Class required spending a lot of money on online stuff that we barely had to use.
Cool Professor with a practical and hands on mentality towards teaching. As long as you keep up and take his advice you will do well in the class.
Tom's ME 101 class was a great intro class. He always uploads videos to Blackboard on how to complete a project so just follow those and you should get an A on every project. The only downside is lots of kids would use the videos to complete projects so it's almost like we didn't learn as much since we were just following directions.
The class was boring as you have to set in the lap for 3 hours. You can work on your parts at home or wherever you want. Throws a lot of jokes but none of them are funny.
One of the most enjoyable and easiest classes of Fall'16. Tom is a great instructor and walks your hand through most of the projects. The concept is fairly easy as long as you understand the basic functions of a computer. The quizzes can be hard if you don't study, however will at most just cap your grade at a B.
Johnstons class wasn't very interesting. He tries to make it be but he often goes into tangents. Near the middle/end of the semester he talks less and it's more of you making projects by watching his videos. They are mainly step by step on how to do everything. The class was an easy A if you take the time to do the projects
Johnston is a very mellow instructor he really wants you to use what you know from his short lectures and put them into practice. Don't worry if you can't figure out your first part or drawing, engineering requires practice even after class. You will need to purchase solid professor for his class and that shows videos of all the parts step by step.
Taking ME 102 is a challenge right from the get go. You must teach a majority of the material yourself, only giving videos on the material you should watch. He will hit you with a pop attendance quiz when you least expect it. Also, make sure you have good friends, as the teacher will not help you at all and tell you to find out yourself.
An extremely easy class. All you have to do is show up, do the work he gives you, get checked off, then you can leave. ME 101 was technically a 3-hour class, but I always left early because I finished the assignments before the class ended. Easy A, highly recommend
He quickly goes over how to make the parts in class, and goes off on random tangents, but luckily, his videos on SolidProfessor helped me greatly with the assignments. Show up to class, because he sometimes gives out quizzes.
Professor Johnston is a great solid modeling teacher. The assignments and grading criteria are clear and the least amount of time was spent in class as possible. Despite being a MWF class, there were very few Friday class meetings. Prof. Johnston is kind of soft spoken, so sit somewhere near him if you want to hear what he has to say.
Easy class! Goes through the parts and drawings very fast but posts videos on solidprofessor. Download the software so you can work on the projects outside of class. Few quizzes in the 1st half of the semester but if you go over his powerpoint slides you should be fine. The 2nd half will be lab practicals so go over solidprofessor.
If you watch the solid professor videos, easy A. Watch the videos and make the parts exactly as he does and you will get 100% on everything. Just make sure you go on days he introduces projects/projects are due because thats when he likes to do pop attendance quizzes if he notices a lot of people didn't show up.
Tom is a great guy and a good teacher, but I thought his class was a pain. The projects were easy (but very time consuming) to do since he uploaded the videos from them, but the quizzes (which no other instructor gives) completely killed it for me. They were harder than they should be, and honestly just not required for an entry-level course.
Straightforward class, easy A if you give yourself time to do the projects. Study for the quizzes because some of them can be confusing. Johnston doesn't do a good job on making the class interesting. If you have a technical issue when trying to get your project graded he won't help you and will let your grade drop an entire letter grade, absurd.
The best ME 101 and 102 instructor there is! He is straight forward and tells you exactly what the assignment is and when it is due. He also uploads video tutorials on how to make some of the parts which is very helpful. There are weekly quizzes for a portion of the semester and they are very easy to study for as he posts a study guide for each one
Easy class if you do all the work. You only need the textbook for quizzes but there's only 3-4 quizzes the entire semester. He tries to give lectures in the beginning but he usually goes on tangents and as long as you buy solid professor you'll be good for the semester because it walks you through almost all the assignments.
Professor Johnston is a great professor. The class is broken down into drawings, six quizzes, 8 basic exercises, two lab practicals, and three projects on CREO and SolidWorks. He's a pretty nice professor, however, he doesen't like when students ask too many questions. Watch the videos on SolidProfessor because they're extremely helpful.
This professor's grading is unfair and blames it on the head of the ME department. He will do his best to find a way to deduct points even if it is UNREASONABLE. The last project is an old mouse design, needs updating. Your grade won't reflect your efforts. Watch out for deadlines, if not you'll get 0 points even if it is completed.
Professor Johnston doesn't teach the class. You learn by watching the TAs and watching solid professor videos. The class itself is an easy A if you show up and follow directions.
A mediocre class. Professor Thompson does not even teach in class, he just assigns SolidProfessor videos for us to learn from. The GD&T quizzes killed the class for me as they are way too difficult. The TAs are rude and impatient too. Prof. Johnston does not seem to care about his students as he was absent during most class meetings.
He tries to deduct points any way he can like writing your first name before your last name on a quiz. He blames it on the head of the department instead of him doing something about it. You will notice passive aggressiveness and him raising his voice when talking to ESL students. Be aware of the deadlines.
Professor Johnston is not that great of a professor. I had an 8AM lab with him and he was absent for most of the semester. Him and his TAs can be pretty rude and unhelpful. Study hard for the GD&T quizzes as they are extremely difficult and confusing. He doesn't even teach in class, you'll have to watch the Solid Professor videos to learn CAD. Meh
He doesn't teach. You might see him twice out of the semester. You learn from solid professor videos. I recommend going to other sections, including yours, so you don't fall behind on your assignments. Ask TA's to help you with your parts. Consult with your peers because it'll be easier if yall work together to learn how to do the parts.
