almost too nice to be a teacher...really great guy, relates the topic at hand consistently to the real world, but has tough tests
Tom is the****. Hes too cool to be a teacher. Hes not the easiest grader, but everything is take home (even midterms/finals). The subject is boring, but Tom does what he can to spiff it up. He recommended his favorite types of liquor to our class! Tom, if you read this, you're the MAN.
He gives out take home midterms and finals. He hilarious and gets of topic easily but is a lot of fun
He's a funny guy and you don't really have to read the books if you take notes. Don't skip class though...my grade dropped because of it, he really takes it into consideration at the end.
This guy is AWESOME!!! I wish he taught more courses. He definitely is the best teacher I have ever had and makes philosophy fun! You would be making a HUGE mistake by not taking him. Very little HW with takehome midterm/final.
This guy is great! I definitely advise taking his class. Everything is take home, and if you have any questions at all, just ask and he is more than willing to help. Just take class notes and dont' skip and you'll have yourself a good A.
He makes philosophy, a usually boring subject, pretty fun. Tests are take home including the mid-term and final. If you want to watch movies, talk about aliens and have an overall good time while learning something take him!!!!!!!
He makes philosophy interesting and all the tests are take home.
Easy. If you want to learn you can, but if not... everything is take home even the mid-term and final. He gives you the answers in class. Take him. Makes class interesting.
This guy is amazing! SOOO funny.. extremely recommended. Course specialties include: taking time in the beginning of the semester to get to know each student, watching a really random movie and totally unrelated movie, and learning martial arts. You couldn't ask for a better guy!
Tom is the greatest prof. ever! If your major gives you enough hard times, his course is a God send. Take home mid. & final allow you to work with classmates! Gives weekly worksheets that are fill in the blank and easy as cake! Easy CAKE course!
I was in and out of the Hospital with many doctors appointments and operations due to injury. He was extremely helpful and understanding. He is a prime example of the likable up and coming University professor: Makes hard stuff easy, makes the boring fun, and makes a required class one that you would take over again.
He's a great guy. Loves random tangents about UFOs and crop circles. He's an awesome guy and an awesome teacher.
SO EASY! You can miss class whenever you want and for whatever reason as long as you let him know in advance and are honest (i.e "i'm really tired and would rather sleep). NO tests or papers other than group take home midterm and final. Weekly assignments that are fill in the blank and straight from lecture/text. Very laidback!
Tom is a great teacher and just generally fun to talk with. He can get students excited about pretty bland material, and does an excellent job of making difficult texts in philosophy accessible to non-majors as well as the generally disintersted. Highly recommended, especially for non-philosophy majors or those who find philosophy difficult.
He is awesome! Take good notes (write down everything he writes down) and you wont need to read to do assignments. 2 tests both takehome and done in groups
aweseome guy. he actually takes the time to get to know you and learn about you. be sure to take good notes (write down everything he writes on the board), only 2 tests and both are take home and done in groups.
really chill guy and guaranteed an a. take him
My favorite teacher so far at Creighton. He made class really interesting. Uses great examples, really makes you think, but super enjoyable. Only a mid-term and a final, both take-home and can be done in groups. No papers. Take notes and pay attention in class and you will be fine!
He was a good teacher
Only been in this guys class for 2 weeks and hes already the best professor I've had at Creighton. Took over our research stats class for the original teacher and I couldn't be happier to have him instead. Hes hilarious, interesting, and SUPER mellow. TAKE HIM IF YOU HAVE THE CHANCE! while attendance is essentially optional, i actually WANT to go
Sorry, THE POST BELOW WAS SUPPOSED TO BE FOR DR. LEAK. But, I do have Kiefer as well and it may as well be the same review. He is an awesome teacher. Assignments are creative, sometimes fun, and never very time consuming. Will excuse an absence (even if its because ur ****) SO LONG AS YOU TELL HIM BEFOREHAND. Overall great prof. Take him if u can.
I'm so sad he's leaving. One of the best in the PHL department.
Too bad that Tom won't be teaching next year. He's laid back and makes a 100 level course pretty easy because he understands that students have other things going on. I wish more people would have been able to take his classes.
Good teacher, just do notes and pay attention and you should be fine. He talks about random crap thats hilarious. And i think he does acid, fyi lolol
This guy is hilarious! He talks about the most random things, ie. zombies and zombie walks he does, so funny. If you do the worksheets (which are easy) then you will be fine. Midterm and final is take home. Easy teacher to get this class out of the way.
Easiest professor i've ever had in my entire life! And he's somewhat interesting too! He likes to try and relate to you so he talks about partying and such from time to time but it's all in good fun. And I agree with the acid comment. lol
Very easy professor! He tries to make philosophy interesting and if you are confused he is willing to explain it different ways until it makes sense. Very interesting person, fun class! Midterm and final are take home, they are difficult but it helps to work on them with a study group. I definitely recommend him!
Class is mandatory but the attendance policy is lax. He'll explain. He's pretty easy. Homework is a little on the difficult side, but other than that. Love this class for the take home final & midterm.
freshman class only so if you are a freshman... TAKE HIM NOW you will NOT REGRET IT. take home final and midterm. easy worksheets due every 2 weeks. watched 2 or 3 movies. LOVED his thought experiments (surveys in class about random opinions) and relates everything back to philosophy. still learned but it was really easy and fun!
SOO EASY. Everything is take home and he lets you work in groups. And when I say everything, that includes the Midterm and Final. He's also really funny and I enjoyed his class.
Easy class. 8 worksheets, A midterm and final. Everything is take home. Take good notes and you should be crystal.
Easy class. 8 worksheets, A midterm and final. Everything is take home. Take good notes and you should be crystal. Work together with people to secure your A. Attendance is required. After 2 misses he says he will dock you a half letter grade, but hes fairly lenient if you participate in class.
Downright favorite prof at creighton. the guy is hilarious. I knew nothing about philosophy when I started and now I want to minor in it. I would definitely recommend him, he is a part timer though so good luck getting him.
This class was so much fun! He really makes the lectures enjoyable and he makes you think outside of the box. The class is easy enough. You need to do the occasional worksheet and his midterm and final are take home. However, he thinks cell phones and laptops are evil technology. so don't use them in class!
Kiefer is the best teacher I have had at Creighton in that he cares about the students and truly tries to impact each student's life. He gives students every opportunity to pass, but if you wait until the last day to do homework you won't get it done. Additionally, he is a tough grader when it comes to worksheets.
Was so disappointed I couldn't get him for Ethics and realized I didn't rate him when I took him for Philosophy my freshman year. I really suck at philosophy but he worked with me. Took my late work and encouraged me. You can get a great grade easily with effort- I just slacked my freshman year. He is a great professor- one of my favorites!
Thomas is brilliant. As long as you take notes in class and read the books to do the homework and take-home midterm and final, you can get a B or B+. Not only are the midterm and final exam take-home, you are encouraged to work on it with others. You just cannot use any form of technology like cell phones and computers in class, but that's fine.
One of the best teachers I have had at creighton. For the take home midterm and final make sure to go into his office hours for extra help because they can be tricky but he is more than willing to be there for his students. He provokes a deeper sense of thinking and is hilarious. Not necessarily an easy A but definitely achievable.
If you dont care about philosophy this teacher is for you. All of his tests are take home and so you're basically guaranteed an A. However, if you're like me and actually want to learn something, take someone else.
If you have the chance to take Dr. Kiefer, do it. He is simply the best professor I had in four years at Creighton. The classes were always a highlight of my week, filled with engaging lectures and actually productive group discussions. He's also a genuinely cool guy who takes the time to know the students. 10/10, would recommend.
One of the best professors I've ever had! He actually cares more about you learning than the grades. He takes time to get to know you and learn everyones names! Definitely recommend!
Dr. Kiefer is the professor you want if you are looking for a laid-back class that takes off the stress. During this course, he gives you only 2 tests, Midterm and Final, which are both take-home tests. He is super relatable and wants to get to know you. He is all-around a great person who wants you to do well!
Dr. Kiefer is awesome. The first thing he said to us was that he would leave the stress to the other classes. 9 assignments on lectures + reading (easy), 1 midterm and 1 final. Tests are take home if you follow his one rule: No tech in class. You do NOT want to take those tests in class. Hes a nice guy! Please give him the respect he deserves!
Taking Kiefer for my intro Philosophy class was by far the best decision I made my first semester at Creighton. You are graded by few things, but both the midterm and final are take-home. Also, one week each month is a "movie week" where he just plays a movie that is "related" to Philosophy. Plus, his lectures were hilarious and interesting.
Kiefer understands the college students. He understands that you have other classes to worry about. Class is not difficult with 8 HW assignments and a take home midterm and final. Class is heavy lectures, often lets you out of class early. Class also takes breaks with 3 movies throughout year. Funny dude and NO TECHNOLOGY allowed in class
Kiefer is an awesome guy. Attendance is a majority of your grade, but you have 8 easy straight out of the book assignments, a take home midterm and final. The 2 tests are more difficult but can work in groups. you do 3 weeks of easy lectures followed by a movie week. not a huge fan of philosophy but would take another one of kiefer's classes.
Dr. Kiefer is AMAZING. He is super kind and tries his best to learn everyones names. He engages with the class and he's super quirky and funny. The material he teaches is super cool and interesting and I loved his class! All of his tests are take home, unless he catches 4 people on their phones. DON'T SKIP CLASS! All of the notes are in class!
Kiefer's class is such a blessing. He only assigns 8 fill-in-the-blank assignments all year, the final/midterm are take home (as long as your class stays off their phones!), and we watch a movie every month. He truly cares about every student and their well-being. The final/midterm are somewhat difficult but doing them with a group makes them okay.
Very funny!! Super easy in class, BUT the mid-term and final are HARD. It's a good thing that they are take home and you can work in a group!! Be sure to take really good notes and pay attention. Also, go into his office hours. He is super funny and helpful during them. Honestly I can not stress how important office hours are with this prof.
Kiefer was one of my favorite professors this year! He makes lecture extremely interesting, especially considering most people are only taking his course because it's required. Every assignment is take home, and he encourages teamwork on them. Take Kiefer if you want an easy A but also want to learn the material in a fun way.
Just do your homework well, work with a good group on your midterm and final, don't miss class, and you will easily get a B+/A. Kiefer is a really good guy too... Pretty awkward, very lovable.
Tom is a legend. Lectures are funny, examples are entertaining. He knows the concepts and explains them well. As long as you don't use electronics during class, the midterm & final are take home. Upon first impression, you'd think he's crazy, but he knows so much about random stuff besides philosophy. Easy homework, ample extra credit, take him.
Hes a good teacher. Easy work. You watch some movies in class.
Kiefer is fun and is great to discuss philosophy with. I had a great time learning in his class
Tom loves to talk. He really tries to get to know his students so that they are more than just a face. He is funny and tries to make class as fun as possible. If you like Nebraska football, definitely take Tom. The class is super easy with one midterm and one final. Participation does matter, so make sure you go to class and you will be good.
This was not a stressful class, but a very frustrating one. I did not learn in this class. This class could have been taught in a fun way but just wasn't. Philosophy is a very interesting subject but Kiefer lectures and then assigns boring homework. Still take Kiefer because the other philosopher teachers offered at Creighton are worse and harder
I feel like I would have enjoyed this class and actually learned had it been in person but since it was online very few people contributed to the group discussion.
Wasn't a fan of this class at all. The homework was frustrating and tedious because it was fill in the blank but he would only accept one specific word. It's not a terrible class besides the homework. Theres only 2 tests and they're open book, half multiple choice half essay questions, those were easy and you had two chances to take them.
Quirky guy, goes on lots of tangents, but pretty entertaining. Open book/note tests, can also work with others. Only midterm and final for tests. Can be a bit challenging since he gets very off-topic and doesn't always cover all the topics he tests on. Solid choice for a required class, not terribly hard
Kiefer is really nice and funny, but classes can be boring sometimes. Assignments about every 2ish weeks that are pretty easy. Discussions are frequent but straightforward and not hard. Midterm and final were open note--50 matching and short answer questions worth 40 points. A little difficult, but you could take it with friends.
Kiefer is probably the weirdest person I have ever met. You cant go on any technology during class which sucks but if you show up and write down what he puts on the board you will get an A. His study guides for the quizzes are the same questions on the quiz and just has a take home group midterm and final. Very very easy A if you go to class.
Dr. Kiefer is one of the WORST professors ive ever had. Asked us about porn during one of the first classes with him. His midterm made no sense and god forbid you reach out to him with questions. he is incredibly condescending if you don’t know what hes asking. Believe it is ALL of his students faults if they didnt understand something
I took his class online so there was not much group discussion. He asks strange questions about current pop culture; he tries to relate philosophical ideas back to celebrities or something he thingks students will understand. He did assign a fair amount. of homework and he is not good at responding to emails.
Super cool person. His midterm and final will take you some time but isn't really hard. Quizzes he gives you a study guide for and all the questions come right from there. He tells you to not stress about the class if PHL isn't your thing and he means that. Yeah, he has his quirks but he is a great professor and a great person.
Tom is a sweetheart. He probably cares about you more than your mom does. He often spends the first 30 min of class talking about whatever you want. Just don't ignore him, that's lame. Midterm and final are take-home and collaborative as long as you don't screw up and use your phone in class like an insolent fool. Respect Kief, he deserves it.
Kiefer is just a little quirky but he's a sweetheart. This class had some STUPID hard parts, class time always seemed like a joke but answers on quizzes had to be word for word what he wanted or you lose points. Midterm and final were both out of left field hard, this class is more work than you expect. BUT pls interact w him in class he'll b happy
Kiefer is great! He always has good one liners randomly in class, which is quite entertaining. There are a few quizzes throughout the semester, which he always reminds you about ahead of time. The mid-term and final are take home if your class stays off their phones. There are a few blueline discussion posts, which are thought provoking.
dr kiefer is an amazing person and he really tries to make class interesting for his students. absences will lose you points in the gradebook, and there is barely any homework, only quizzes every two weeks on the material learned through class or found in the book. the final and midterm are take home, but the questions are unexpectedly hard.
Keifer is a super easy teacher. All the quizzes, midterm, and final are open note and he offered extra credit for the midterm to help people's grades. The lectures are boring but as long as you take notes he writes in the board you'll be good.
Take this class for Magis core. No papers. There are quizzes every few weeks but they are open note and Kiefer gives you the questions for them before so you can find the answers. The final and midterm are open note and collaboration if you follow his phone rule, and they take a while, but are doable. Reach out to him for help, he's very nice.
This was a fine class. I've heard it's much easier than the other core classes. The midterm and final are very toughly graded. The quizzes help outweigh that. The guy is very interesting and quite the character but he is very smart and cares for his students.
This is a great Magis core class! Much easier than most philosophy classes. He is super caring and makes lots of jokes. Little homework and outside work. Only a few discussion boards, open-note quizzes, and a take home midterm and a final that you can work with a group on. The midterm and final take some time, but overall very easy class
Easy to pass, not so easy to get an A. Very very tough grader but everything is open note. Take the best notes (copied off the board) you can because they will be extremely useful on the quizzes and exams, which are take home. Be aware that the quizzes and exams take a good amount of time to do and a fair bit of reading. Overall Kiefer is very nice
Dr. Kiefer is a cool dude. His lectures are so interesting because he comes up with intricate thought experiments that engage his students, and adds a lot of humor to his lessons. He is SUPER strict on no-tech, but all his tests and the final are open book/take-home. I went from not knowing if I would like PHL, to registering for a 200 level class.
Kiefer is a funny guy. As long as you take notes and read the assigned material you should be fine. The exams are tough, but they are take home and you can work with a group as long as you follow the cell phone rule. Highly recommend working with a group on the exams as they are tough. Record your answers from each exam as they will be used again.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!
Unique guy, super nice, truly wants to get to know each student. Lectures can feel long sometimes because no computers are allowed but he tries to make them exciting. Make friends in class because you can work with the people around you on some tests. Quizzes, discussion posts, then take home midterms and final!
I think he is a great guy. Midterms and final is online as long as no one uses their phones in class. He is understanding and presents the information well. The midterms and final take a long time though so be prepared to spend a lot of time working on it, but you can work w/ groups.
Kiefer is a good dude, but he grades tough. I give him a 4/5, but I personally wouldn't take him again because of his tough grading. Sometimes I wonder if the answers that he is looking for actually exist. Keep that in mind.
Attendance is mandatory and you can't use any technological devices, even for notes, or you will have to take the midterm/final in person. Midterm/final are online and can be taken with groups but they can be very difficult and hard to find the right answer. The discussions are also graded pretty tough, but it's still possible to get an A.
Tom really cares about his students and actually wants to get to know you. His teaching style is different but in a good way. Definitely take his class if you want an easy magis core class. only rule is no technology in exchange for no in class test but this is a good deal. Biggest part of your grade is take home tests that you have a week to take
Thomas Kiefer is great. He really values each student and wants them to learn, and he will love you if you come to his office hours and debate philosophy with him. However, he makes the exams unreasonably, astoundingly, and absurdly difficult, so it's really good that those exams are take-home. Still, be ready to work for a good grade.
Tom is a great guy, but you have to be paying attention in class to get a good grade. Write down everything he writes down. The class isn't very hard, but his tests made me want to shove a pen in my eye. They are super difficult for no reason. You have to use the books, his lecture notes, and his online notes. And definitely work with others.
