Thomas is a very nice person, but dear god, was he ever BORING. I couldnt take his class by the time the semester was over. I cant complain, however, as I was at a C+, completely bombed his horrible essay final test, and he still gave me a B. Thanks Mr. K!
Professor is more of a preacher than professor, is supposed to teach ethics but rather preaches christianity and wastes lecture hours talking about india
wow! i don't even know where to start. first of all i couldn't understand him at all! i got sick of his stories that were completely pointless. the only bonus was that he was easy to manipulate.(getting out of class extremely early) other than that it was painful to sit in his class. overall it was highly irritating!
don't take this class plz!!! nice guy but ....its a horrible class, i didn't understand a word he said
Very Very nice man, a little hard to understand but as long as you study the lecture sheets that he hands out you should do fine in his clas and maybe get into a discussion with him from time to time!
He has a heavy accent, but he is still a wonderful teacher!
I thought he was a very nice guy but he gave you lecture notes that were just like the quizez and were easy they were only ten questions and a paper, and mid term and final that were really easy too
Nice guy, a little hard to undersand sometimes though. First time he has taught this class but will be teaching it again. 5 case papers and an oral presentation at the end of the semester are all you get graded on. NO TESTS! Like I said, he's never taught it before this semester though, so it might change how he grades it. Pretty easy though.
he is very understanding when things happen a little hard to understand the first couple of classes because of his accent but you get used to it. he uses the text book a lot but he tells you what will be on quizes and gives you outlines so its really easy
Great guy. Teaches everything in a very clear way, even though his accent's pretty strong at first. Very lenient with due dates. Great guy, especially if you show a genuine interest in the class.
Horrible.
Really nice prof, his accent makes it a bit hard to understand him, but you get use to it, gives alot of extra credit, but make sure you read and stay on top of things!
If you are looking for a class where you get a good grade for learning nothing about philosophy, this one's for you. The class is all about Mr.K in India and his god. Easy otherwise, just agree with every nonsense he preaches. If you confess you are devout Christian, you get your A.
I took Biomedical ethics with him. Nice guy but class is sooooooooo boring. I had the feeling he learned the subject during the semester. The class was a pain to sit thru and most of the stuff we read is plain useless. But he's a good man, understanding and easy.
He is VERY hard to understand. Very. I have him for Intro to religion, he is actually a pastor and he preaches Christianity. Not the experience I was hoping for. If you ask him a question out of the box of challenge something he tends to brush it off. His class outline is great, you really can't miss anything but am disappointed in his class.
He is a very good teacher! easy class to attend. U get group presentations, write ups each week, but it is an easy A for the class. Class can get boring at times, but He is easy and helpful!!
Wonderful teacher, very helpful, explains readings well. Loved this class!
What a waste of time and money!! Easy grade, boring, uninformative class. I don't understand why he's "teaching". Let someone who knows and cares about the topic teach, Mr. Kulanjiyil.Or start learning yourself.
Awesome Teacher!!! Really Helpful.
Great Teacher
The guy can barely speak English. He's a flaming liberal but if you can put up with all that it really is an easy A. You don't need to read the book at all. He posts study guides on blackboard and gives you the answers before the tests. If you want to learn something, take another class. If you want to boost your GPA, look no further.
He posts all notes online and then goes over the same material in class.
Good professor overall. He posts all his notes online, and gives you easy assignments. There is absolutely no reason to not get an A or a B in this class, he is an easy grader.Even his quizzes were pretty easy. Just put in effort and you will be fine.
He was super nice and such a cool guy. He's understanding and very pleasant. His accent is really thick which can be unfortunate at times, but he's clear, consistent, and super nice. I had him for Biomedical Ethics and I HIGHLY recommend him. He made the class so interesting!
easy class. 5 critique papers which if u just relate the topic to some story in urlife ull get full points for. dont quote from the text in those tho. u need the book, no more than $30. 5 quizzes which arent difficult. i didnt do so well on them, still aced the class. 2 exams. not hard either. 1 paper not hard. easy class. he just didnt like me
Decent teacher. I personally had no problems with him, but after reading a few reviews could see why people would. He did talk about India (but that was b/c he was running a trip 4 it). Book was expensive but you didn't need it as he put the notes online and went over what u should have read in class. If u want an easy A or B take this class.
easy going teacher. 10 question quizzes, easy 2 page papers. we have group discussions like everyday. easy a!
Dr. K is great, though his accent is deep and he is often hard to understand and a bit biased towards his background faiths of Hindi and Christianity. Gives a lot of extra credit and leads discussions where you actually learn something. His name is actually spelled Kulanjiyil according to BB. I would take another course with him any day easy A!
He is a great teacher! He usually only lectures for 15-20 minutes then we watch a video and usually end with some group work. His accent isn't bad I've never been not able to understand him. Midterm & final, a few quizzes. HW is a few "reflection papers" that are one page double spaced - easy points. Over all easy class and he makes it interesting!
Dr. Kulanyilil is a great teacher. His class is so easy and he is really passionate about the subject. As long as you do the assignments and listen in class, it will be a breeze. I definitely recommend him, especially if you want an easy A in an interesting class.
Dr. Kulanyilil is awesome, class is super fun and interesting. He is passionate about what he does and cares for his students, just had him for Biomedical ethics and class was always interesting and easy A if you put in the effort. Biomedical ethics is basically his baby at COD and who better to learn from than the father! Thumbs up for Coolness!!!
This teacher is awesome! I would highly recommend him.
Dr K's Biomedical Ethics class was a walkover. He is very enthusiastic about the subject and makes the information extremely easy to understand in his lectures. Offers loads of extra-credit. Take this class if u need an easy A. It's fun too. Lots of group work and presentations.
This is a very interesting and challenging class. There are 6 papers to write total. There is a lot of memorization involved in this class about specific details. The instructor is nice, strict, and teaches quite well. There are no foods and no drinks allowed during class.
You only need the book for the writing assignments (just copy the prompt from someone in class). He lectures everyday and summarizes all key points of the text. The class was quite interesting and he has fun stories. The only problem was that nobody wanted to discuss in my class, but he said his other class was rather active in discussions.
Strict attendance policy. Lot of assignments (papers, group work, ect). Several quizzes, midterm, final. Did not care for him, not very helpful, will not allow make up quizzes. Doesn't answer questions - brushes them off or goes in a different direction with them. Try a different professor, you will not enjoy this class unless you're super diligent
Great guy. real sincere and caring. lectures are boring but class is easy. easy test and quizzes and gives extra credit. you MUST attend class. the book sucks and its hard to read but you need it for some lectures. has a bit of accent buts its cool.
Fair grader and stuck to the schedule that was laid out at the start of the class which allowed plenty of time between assignments. Assignments were explained well and if help was needed Kulanjiyil was available in a very timely manner. Assignments were all meaningful to the subject matter with the appropriate amount of freedom for essay choices.
Just do all of the homework, and you should get a good grade. Quiz's are very easy, never studied once. You dont have to take any notes, he hands out printed sheets of the notes everyday. Class usual ends early also. Very good teacher! I learned a lot and easily passed
The group projects that needed to be completed in his class every other week got rather tedious rather quickly, but apart from that, he is a very good teacher. Unopinionated and intelligent, he was what I considered to be everything you would expect from someone teaching a variety of religions. Not too terribly difficult of a class, but do study.
Do not expect him to respond to your emails within 24hours. He seems to not care about whether you pass or fail.
Dr. Kulanjiyil is a fantastic teacher who loves teaching and cares for his students. i took him for ethics class and learned so much. He is a great man that belongs in an ethics classroom.
Very difficult to understand due to heavy accent. A nice guy, but the curriculum was not well planned out. His Powerpoint lectures were pretty useless for understanding the material, they were sparse, and were rushed through to give more time to small group discussions. Book is necessary. Better hope you have a talkative class or it will be boring.
WHOEVER IS READING THIS BEWARE! DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER-- seems harsh yes but he is. My lord, the Term Paper due is so freaking confusing. All the assignments are far from clear. I feel like he literally made this entire course in his sleep. He does not respond to emails, quizzes are terrible as well as DB. so many people dropped, I dont blame em.
I got the book (never used it except for homework responses and the extra credit given for the semester) and barely even tried in that class - still did well. He's a very nice teacher and I thought he was really good! He loves it when everyone participates. The topics that we discussed were very interesting and I enjoyed the class overall!
He is a peaceful guy. Class is straight forward-show up, participate(opinionated answers in class discussion, do homework and you are good. I don't remember if we needed a book, but you can simply ask. Don't let his last name scare you, you will be able to understand everything he says :)
While I accept that summer classes may be more densely packed with assignments due to the shorter term, this course was just ridiculous. There's a total of five writing assignments in this 8-week course, which wouldn't be too bad, if three of them weren't spaced three days apart with repeated recommendations that you "don't work ahead".
he Is not clear about the work that is due, assigns 5-10 pages of reading every class, but if you read and understand the assignment you should do fine, but beware he is never in his office and never responds to emails. Class is passable with an A but an intro class shouldn't be this hard.
Professor Kulanjiyil is very knowledgeable and great teacher I took his philosophy 1100 class and get an A. he is very helpful and care about every student. show up, participate with the class discussions, do your work and he is there always to help you. He is a really passionate and dedicated person to his job. For sure I will take him again.
Dr. Kulanjiyil is a very poor communicator and can sometimes take up to a few weeks to respond to students. His quizzes for the online class are only available once, for 24 hours, so if your schedule doesn't allow you to get to the assignment on a particular weekday, you're out of luck. He also refuses to allow any students to work ahead.
I took this professors honors religion class, and I throughly enjoyed his class and the people within it. There is A LOT of presenting on that class and you are expected to read weekly homework assignments, with that being said Professor K is extremely nice and an fairly easy grader. Put in moderate effort and youll do fine.
Great person.. Ok teacher. Everyone else noted his accent and although it is heavy, 99.9% of the time you can understand him. The tests are SUPER easy. All in all read the outlines he provides and at least 50% of the readings he assigns and you will be fine. Beware though because participation is graded!
Extremely difficult class, a lot of lectures and reading to do. weekly discussion boards, quizzes, papers and activities. Gave schedule in syllabus and no reminders and no late work. No extra credit. No extra credit. Take days to reply to questions about assignments and 99% of the time sends the syllabus or quotes the syllabus. Book focused.
He's an alright teacher. On papers and presentations he's a very easy grader. Puts what will be on the test on blackboard so you know what to study. Has a slight accent but very easy to understand.
I had him as an online teacher and it was almost impossible to get him to respond to an email and when he did it was likely short and rude. He's a tough grader and very strict with online work. Would never take his class again.
Wonderful professor and class. Through this class, I was able to develop a strong interest and better understanding of philosophy. His feedback was extremely helpful and enabled me to improve throughout the semester. Great, very thought-provoking class, with a truly knowledgeable professor who cares about his students. Would 100% take again!
This professor grades semi fairly, but dont expect helpful feedback. My husband and I took the same course together and got copied and pasted one sentence comments from him. The way he explains things (ex. How to write the final paper) was confusing, but when I attempted to email him with questions, he was rude.
I did not dislike him, but I did not enjoy him as a teacher either. I really enjoy learning about bioethics so I spent a lot of time engaged in the course material, however, I barely passed the course. He is a tough grader and does not have great communication skills. I would not take another class with him as the teacher.
Online class is ALL about papers! even the final has 2 papers included, would not recommend taking this class unless you are good at writing. He is a very tough grader! I never got an A on an paper and i'm quite good at writing. 0 for late work.
Thomas goes outside the position as just a teacher and really gives you a real area to think and interpret. By far one of my favorite teachers at COD for how respectful he is.
not too sure what to say about him.. he was nice but strict in a way, hard to understand at times because of his accent but made his class interesting. the quizzes sometimes didnt make sense and the final either.. many papers like case analysis and a term paper, i would maybe take someone else
I took this Philosophy Honors class in Fall 2019. Dr. Kulanjiyil is a wonderful and understanding professor. However, he is a stickler on his attendance and late work policies, but informing him ahead of time works. This class has several papers and group presentations, and all the readings matter. His tests are a breeze--answers in unit outlines.
The guy doesn't teach anything. He isn't a teacher, he's really a instructor just doing their job. All he does is give homework and grade your work. Doesn't care about the student not like Casey Slott who cares. He only is in it for the money, he won't care about you unless your his religion. He is also has religious discrimination so be careful.
Dr. Kulanjiyil has some impressive credentials, so when he gives you good feedback, it is a good feeling, and he gives plenty of feedback. Unlike many reviews here, he DOES get back to emails. As an online summer course, it was overloaded for me, LOTS of reading, class is real interesting though, you learn a ton! I do wish he lectured though..
He did not give good feedback on papers and I did not do well on them as a good writer (A's in all English classes). Was not willing to work with the student and assigned too much work and his expectations were unrealistic. As a straight A student I struggled greatly until I finally dropped his class (the first and only class I have ever dropped).
Professor Kulanjiyil has clear grading criteria and what he expects from you on assignments. Responds to emails. Summer class was put together well. It was overloaded with content but it was a summer 8 week class. You learn so much. I wish he had some way of teaching virtually. Great professor. I recommend you take him.
His condescending attitude is the worst. If you email him a question, it always starts with: this is perfectly clear in the syllabus. Well, obviously not if I still have a question. I would not have taken him if it were not required and he was the ONLY professor teaching the course. 5 days for assignment 1--includes reading over 200 pages!!
Very uncooperative. Gives no reminders or even announces assignments or when they are due. Condescending attitude, doesn't care about students. Very poor feedback and confusing assignments. Lots of work, with no instruction. Very unpleasant experience in the class, I ended up having to drop it due to the fact that there is no teacher communication.
He is very strict on what the students should do but helpful. good prof. in general.
He is good, although he'll make you work for every single credit you want. No work, no eating
Good teacher, interesting class. Stay on top of the work and due dates yourself as he doesn't waste lecture time giving very many reminders, but they are all clearly in the syllabus.
The grading was hard and the final is very hard with essay and discussion scenarios both of600-800 words in just 1 hr and 30 mins which also includes 20 question quiz.
The quizzes were easy if you did that reading and the discussion boards were interesting. I worked hard on the final and got a decent grade on it (though I think I deserved a little higher). Since there were no lectures I don't know much about him.
He had quite the accent which made it difficult to understand at times so if you can't focus, it's going to be tough. He requires not 1 but 2 textbooks, and the 2nd is just a handbook for the 1st one. Unfortunately he's got some assignments that require them. In addition, he doesn't seem too empathetic and his assignments are all over the place.
The blackboard setup was all over the place. I am an A student and have never received less then a 98% on a paper. Unfortunately, he bases your grade off his personal feelings not your backed up research. He is obsessed with talking about personal topics such as abortion. He never excepts late work even when you were sick!
Don't take if you're not ready to write like 4 side papers and a term paper. he was the only one available for me so if that's also the case for you, take in person for sure.
Worst teacher I have ever had in my entire 14 years of being a student. Not sure how this man got a teaching job but it should be taken away in a heartbeat. Still managed a B in the class, but what came along with that was a 3 page paper, 2 discussion posts and a quiz EVERY week. Spent more time in this 3 credit hour class than I did anatomy. AWFUL
He is a tough grader when it comes to discussion. You will need to go above and beyond to get full credit for the most simple assignments. His quizzes are a joke. One spelling/case sensitive error and you get the entire question wrong. I got a 94 on the final paper, and that's what saved my A. Professional and replies to emails. Overall an OK prof.
Prof. Kulanjiyil will mark you off for everything. Rarely does he give full credit. He will also correct you when you make a statement that doesn't adequately reflect his beliefs. Gives more criticism than constructive feedback. This course is a lot of work, especially for 5-weeks. He isn't a bad instructor, just very tough on students.
The class was completely online and syllabus was pretty straight forward. Although, Professor Kulanjiyil was a tough grader and sometimes gave false information. Also when you try to contact him through email, he is very rude and demonstrates that he does not care for his students. Honestly, wouldn't recommend taking this professor.
Professor Kulanjiyil is a very interesting person and generally seems to care a lot about his students. He offers very thought provoking group discussions and his lectures are well explained. His only downfall is that he will not post about assignments and you have to really dig through the syllabus to find basic details and due dates
Professor Kulanjiyil is a tough grader but he gives great feedback and is very encouraging. I have a lot of respect for him as an educator. If you want to push yourself to improve your writing and critical reasoning this is the class for you. Apply yourself and ask a lot of questions and you will doo just fine.
Difficult for an intro class. It is not easy to get a very high grade on assignments, and his comments are not helpful to improve on future ones. Hard to tell what he wants. The quizzes are straightforward and easy if you watch the videos and do the reading. The textbook is necessary. There is extra credit, but expect to do it.
Dr. Kulanjiyil was nice and often humorous. He taught the difficult to talk about topics well. Lecture outlines were helpful to follow along with the lectures and study from. The textbook was heavily relied on--You need to read the textbook essentially cover to cover.
kind and caring professor, but He is boring though and very monotone. The workload is not bad at all. there's total of 5 papers. The bad things about the class were how boring it was, and the quizzes are hard. The whole class struggled on all the tests because they were simply way too complicated for this course. I don't recommend this teacher.
Professor Kulanjiyil is a very difficult person to work with. He does not state when assignments are due and allows offensive language to be used in the class freely. Multiple students left the class during lecture due to this. He is an extremely tough grader and makes it impossible to gain an A in the class. I do not recommend Prof. Kulanjiyil.
I'll withhold detail until the semester ends but I certainly do not recommend.
He is very soft-spoken and has very clear deadlines. There are so many extra credit opportunities I am surprised anybody would get below a B.
He grades tough. I first read through the entire syllabus to know the due date. One day he sends an email about a comprehensive exam and then I went to look for it the same day and couldn't find it. I emailed him and he made no sense at all and was accusing me saying I'm the reason I couldn't find it, and didn't even explain.Never taking him again.
He is strict and very by the book. He lays everything out on the syllabus and expects you to refer to it first when you have questions. The class is very much based on the textbook, so I highly recommend reading and studying from it. It's a dry but doable class, just keep up with the work and actually use the textbook.
I had a good experience in this class. The only thing I would say is that you learn by reading the textbook and with handouts, so make sure to listen. I got bored and couldn't understand some material, so what helped me was creating my own flashcards. Lots of little papers and a few group assignments. Take this course if you like philosophy.
