very laid back
He is a horrible teacher. He doesnt grad fair, and you can clearly tell who his favorites are in class. If you arent one of them he wont score your papers as well.
A terrific prof, friendly, kind, and helpful. Gives you a reason to come to class.
Amazing teacher! Not only did he teach me to become a good writer, he renewed my love for it. I've never been so confident with my writing as I am now. He explains assignments well and make the class really fun, it was the class I always wanted to go to, even if I didn't have to. Everyone who loves writing will love this teacher!
Fiction Writing. I've had this man for two classes this past semester and he is incredible. The course projects were fun and he critiqued everyone's short stories well. He definitely had time to make a quick joke and make the class laugh, I could tell everyone loved him. He is a successful novelist and I wish him the best of luck in the future.
If you complete all assignments and do them well, you will have no problem passing his class. He does grade hard on his papers though.
Very laid back and nice.. He is willing to help you if you ask! His class was easy
I took his class online, and it was hard. He really poured the work on. Still, very interesting coursework. I struggled due to personal conflicts and he was very understanding of this. I wish our class would have been more involved, message boards were weak despite requiring to post. WOULD RECOMMEND HIS CLASSES TO ANYONE WHO LIKES TO WRITE!
He is the best teacher willing to help you out. I have had with him summer class and it was fun and very neat.. Highly recommended:
I took Freshman Composition with him and he is a LOT of fun. He alwasy does fun activities in class and while I couldn't really care less about writing, he comes up with some pretty cool writing activities and is really open regarding subjects for your esssays. Never a dull moment, highly recommend him!
He was my favorite teacher, when ever I struggled he was approachable and nice to talk to. I liked how he always had the class participate in activities. If you do your work you will do great! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Mr.Maltman :)
I just started my class with Mr Maltman and he think he's fantastic! He is easygoing, encouraging, fun, helpful and more importantly he is open. An upcoming assignment for Labor Day weekend is to take a field trip anywhere and write about it. Very cool!
I loved this class. Maltman is helpful, encouraging, and open. He reminded me why i write, and why i love to write. Writing Workshops are positive, constructive, and just plain fun.
He has a lot of Work..really Demamding but is a very Good Instructor..He wants students to Pass. Again..a lot of Work...Took his class online felt like a 8 credit class
I had Maltman for a Creative Writing class and a Fiction writing class. He was a really great teacher, alwasy helpful and available. He was one the teachers that led me back to my major of Creative Writing. So I have him to thank for that. He was always encouraging. The only thing I had an issue with was that some of his syllabi were confusing.
A lot of work, but if you do it... you'll do fine. Lot of really great books to read. Very willing to help. Lots of extra credit opportunities. Took his class online, loved it. I bet I would've loved it on campus too. Really great!
Creative Writing class, online. He is a very nice person, I never met him in person though. he does expect a lot, but he is glad to be of assistance in regards to how to make a good paper. Would recommend.
Very great guy as well as teacher. He really cares about his student's writing abilities and wants them to improve and is more than willing to help. A lot of work and reading but i find that he is a VERY GENEROUS GRADER when it comes to papers. I recommend him!
Great teacher:)He is really willing to work with you if you are struggling! I really liked how he didn't give ideas, but how he asked questions to get you thinking on your own!! I enjoyed a lot of the group activities! I got a ton a lot out of his class! My writing really improved a lot!
He is the best teacher ever! He does different class activities and games to engage the class. Super fun! He is easy to approach and has a great sense of humor. I highly recommend! Some of the books you can get away with not reading, but some others you do have to read for group quizzes.
Great teacher! He is very clear about what he wants from you in assignments. I took his hybrid class which I liked a lot. He always pushes assignments back farther for the class. You don't use your books much and the discussions are fun! I would recommend for sure.
Maltman loves what he does, and that seeps through into his teaching. He's passionate and he does his best to help you do yours. He expects a lot of his students, but it's not so much that it's overwhelming. Be prepared to participate! He's always asking for people to share their work.
I took the hybrid course and it was pretty great, although I think there were too many discussion boards to post on throughout the week sometimes. The readings were interesting. The papers were straightforward. He pushed back the due date for at least 3 of our assignments when we asked and sometimes when we didn't ask. Nice class overall.
I am currently taking his hybrid class, he is an excellent teacher. It is a 4 credit class, so don't expect it to be effortless. But if you show up, give effort, do extra credit, and ask him if you have any questions you'll do fine! Highly recommend
Tom is an excellent teacher. He's passionate about the subject and it's infectious! I've learned so much about writing being in his class. He's definitely a step above any of the other Eng. professors at Normandale.
I am currently taking is hybrid Freshman Comp. class and i absolutely love it! The way he teaches is very unique and fun. He's class is pretty easy if you put a good amount of effort in. I strongly recommend him to everyone.
I took his hybrid course last semester. He is such a wonderful professor! He is very approachable and is always helpful! He gives a ton of feedback for every paper through D2L. He prepares well for class each week and his lessons are always entertaining! I HIGHLY recommend taking his course!
I never received anything below an A on any of my papers. He's really flexible in a ton of his assignments - he lets you pick topics that interest you. He's a nice guy.
I would recommand him! His grading is great! I love his teaching and he makes it easy on students. He is very friendly and easy going with assignments!
I love this guy I took Children's Literature during the summer time and I also took his creative writing class 3 years ago. He's very helpful with what you need help with. Overall, he's very nice professor.
Tom was a really great teacher. He was available outside of class if you needed extra help and he keep your attention during class time. I would recommend this professor.
He was a fair grader and provided many opportunities for students to get help. He stayed on topic and his lectures are easy to listen to. I took his hybrid class and had a few times where he wasn't quite clear on due dates. Other than that, he is a very helpful and easy to approach professor.
Would recommend! Took the hybrid class, so 3-4 discussion posts a week, but it was do-able. Most papers were 1000-1500 characters, the longest was an 8 pg argumentative research. He's great on feedback, is very helpful, friendly, and makes class short with enjoyable activities. Most importantly, there's a lot of freedom in topic choice on papers!
I would definitely recommend Tom, I took the hybrid class so we would only meet once a week and the rest was online. I never felt overwhelmed with the amount of work Tom would give and the feedback was always really helpful. Also a very fair grader. He's super friendly and available outside of class if you have questions.
His class was very easy! The content was clear and very helpful! He is very approachable as well, so don't be afraid to ask for help!
This professor is amazing! If you get a bad grade on an essay just go talk to him and he will help you get raise that grade! You do get quite a bit of homework but it's super easy to complete, just time consuming. If you show up and do the work you will pass the class, no problem. I have taken him for three semesters and will take him again!!
Never in my experience as a college student have I felt so compelled to be a writer. After taking this class, I feel not only more confident in my writing ability, but more confident in sharing my writing with others. Tom is an exceptional professor and made a remarkably incredible impact on my college career and life. I would highly recommend!
Tom is a intelligent writer. He cares about his students and gives great feedback. He allows you to rewrite your papers after he gives feedback. I took the hybrid class; Make sure to keep up with the discussions online and you will do fine. 3 papers, no final just an easy group project.
Hybrid- You meet on Monday and it's important to be there. He spends 1 hour chatting and doing activities. The other hour is work time. For the rest of the week, you have 3-4 discussion boards and you have to respond to 2 posts in each. They're really easy too, it takes like 30mins a piece. Not much reading, mostly writing. He's also pretty funny.
He is the best teacher I have ever taken. He is super laid back and actually cares about his students.
Tom is really passionate about teaching writing. You do three papers that all build up in difficulty. He gives you feedback on your rough drafts. If you aren't happy with a grade on a paper, he'll help you bring it up. I took his hybrid class, and the online weekly work is just 3-4 discussion boards that don't take up too much time.
Mr. Maltman is an amazing professor! He's very understanding, and works with you to help you improve your writing. His feedback and grading criteria are very clear. Just be aware that if you take the hybrid(like me) it's a heckuva lot of self-accountability compared to a normal course. Overall, I can't recommend him enough! Great guy.
Maltman is a really nice teacher but I feel his teaching is to much like highschool, at freshman comp I wanted to learn more college writing and I feel like I was just in another highschool English class. He could use to make it a little harder and prepare us more for classes to come. He also isn't always the most organized with essay deadlines.
Prof. Maltman is the best because he chooses topics that are interesting and applicable. He created an online community that is normally very difficult to do. Papers are fairly easy and amount of reading is very low. 3-4 discussion boards each week that take time but not too bad. Take this professor if you want to get value out of the class.
He is a cool guy
Listen, If you want a teacher that is one of the most humble and kind hearted people I have ever met. Take Maltman, he treats every student like a family member regardless of their age, gender or opinions. He is one of the few gems of the garbage heap known as normandale community college. -If you did not get my message the first time take him.
Fantastic professor. He creates very open environments for class discussions and topics are relevant, mostly about current social issues. He is thoughtful, caring, and you can tell that he wants the best for his students. Opportunities for extra credit, but you probably won't need it.
Professor Maltman is the best english professor Ive had so far. If youre a semi decent writer youll get an A no problem. Classwork is a part of the final grade, so while attendance isnt graded showing up will help your final grade. His essays require some extra work, but hes a very easy grader. I learned a lot!
I loved having Professor Maltman as my freshman comp professor!! He's such a dedicated, kind, inspirational professor and I don't know how you could get anyone better for this class! If he sees that you're willing to put in effort, he really helps you and even if you don't know what you're doing, he'll sit down and help you figure it out! Take him!
Tom is a good guy and very soft spoken. He is caring and understanding to your needs. However, he is not always exactly clear on essay rubrics and criteria. He also counts tardies to class. 2 tardies equals 1 absence. Make sure you'll go to class and you will pass with a high grade.
I took Maltman's hybrid freshman comp class. Best class ever! The in-class portion is full of helpful tips, his humor, and preparation time for the week's homework. Outside of class, there are four discussion boards which can be a little time consuming but if you focus, you can get them done pretty quick! Maltman wants the best for his students!
I think the professor is alright, but he's work is intense. I wouldn't say the class is easy. You will absolutely pass the class if you do the work, but don't expect this class to be easy. There's a lot of reading and writing. There's usually 4 board for hes class. You might have 3 some days, but it's usually 4. Essays are more than you think.
I took professor Maltmans freshman comp class and he was the best! Literally the nicest teacher ever. He gives you great feedback on essays and is a pretty good grader if you tried your best. He even allowed us to redo some for a higher grade. A LOT of the points from your grade comes from in class assignments which are easy so come to class.
A fantastic writer in his own right, Thomas really wants to get the most out of your writing. Provides excellent feedback on bigger works and portfolios. It can be difficult to keep up with all of the writing assignments, but I cannot fault him for that. He clearly has a good grasp on his craft and how to teach it to impressionable students.
Tom is an amazing professor. He teaches the class in a thought-provoking manner and made me excited about writing. The feedback he gives on essays is so helpful, and I can tell I improved throughout the class. As a side note, attendance itself is not mandatory, but there are a lot of in-class assignments to do. (Repeat reviewI messed up my first)
Tom is very disorganized. He consistently uses outdated podcasts and homework instructions that he does not update, so get ready to be confused as to when something is due. He also uses poor resources, and for you final project you will have to use a website to create a blog that has TONS of technical problems. Would not recommend.
Thomas Maltman is a poor teacher, I work very hard and I can never get higher than a 90%. He is vey homework heavy and if you're taking him online you can't really say whoa slow down a minute I'm drowning in your homework. He recycles material and hurries through readings with haste."class read chapter 12-30." I hated this class it was very hard.
Tom is Bob Ross reincarnated! Hes very kind. You will look forward to class. Hes passionate about writing and will inspire you. If you have a genuine desire to learn- youll be fine! Lets you re-do papers if you got a lower grade. His class isnt difficult, but does require lots of reading . If you communicate he will take the time to help you.
Professor Maltman is a fantastic professor for those who come in with a strong writing basis already. His assignments, while they may feel like a lot at sometimes, really fulfill his philosophy that writing is about discovering. Lots of opportunities for extra credit and you can always email him for feedback on your essays and he will get back.
Easiest class i've ever taken. Prof. Maltman was extremely helpful and sets the student up for success. He offers lots of extra credit which is extremely helpful too! 10/10 would recommend!
When I put the tag in about lots of homework, I don't mean that it's hard homework. He's an easy-ish grader. As long as you do the work, you'll pass. I really liked him as a teacher but my class wasn't the best. I did the hybrid class and there is a lot of typing. If you spread the work out it's doable. We only read the handmaids tale for class.
Professor Maltman wants all of his students to succeed and does everything to help. He responds timely to emails. He gives clear and constructive feedback. Lectures were coherent and concise and he included the class into discussions. I learned a lot in this class, felt challenged, and would definitely take another one of his classes.
Very nice man! Just lots of busy work since this is an online course which was primarily how he taught us. It was very on your own time and the work was assigned weekly. Id say Maltman is a solid choice and he gave great feedback if you participated and wanted it.
This was my second course with Tom, and he's the best professor I've met. He encourages his students and gives excellent feedback. His assignments are designed to motivate. After taking Creative Writing with him, I'm inspired to write every day for the rest of my life.
Professor Maltman was such a wonderful teacher. The online course was composed of 4-5 "Discussions Boards" per week which are composed of activities to help you become a better writer. I took the summer course so we only had to write 3 papers. He gives great feedback and was just overall a great teacher! Highly recommend!
Thomas Maltman is the goat of freshman comp professors. Everything is clear cut what you have to do for the semester and he offers feedback ahead of time on papers that are super helpful and greatly improved my essays.
One of the most passionate, inspirational, and kind-hearted teachers I've ever had. Entertaining and engaging lectures that respectfully dive deep into controversial subjects. Fun, novel weekly exercises that hone in on specific techniques. Unique type of writing pattern for each essay. Gives detailed feedback on early submissions.
Professor Maltman is one you will never regret taking a class with. He is kind, fun and incredibly caring. He has great communication skills and his online course is very easy to follow. If you have to miss a class, it's easy to get caught up by just looking around on the course homepage. Easy A if you put in the effort. Favorite instructor ever.
I will recommend students to take this class, because the lecturer will give you time to resubmit your assignment if you didn't pass and he will encourage you to redo it again so that you can pass and get good grades. He likes his students and wanted everybody to pass even when you are behind with your assignment he will still extend five more days
He will bombard you with work till the point your lost in the mess. You have assignments and writings for so many different things its impossible to keep track. Doesnt matter if your struggling especially during these times he will not lesson the work load and you will definitely be missing something. Dont take unless you want to be overworked.
He was a great professor overall. We had a paper due about every other week or every three weeks and read part of a book near the end. For every paper, you can email him before you submit it and he will happily give you advice on how to make your essay better. I earned at least a 95% on each essay and I'm not even a great writer.
Prof. Maltmans great. This class is pretty easy, but you definitely need to put some work into it. Every week theres four discussion boards and you need to reply to other people too. Theres usually another assignment along with that. I think four essays overall, but he gives you lots of time and practice to better them. He grades fairly too.
Professor Maltman is a good person and teacher. His class was not necessarily difficult, however, you do have to put a good amount of work into it. The essays are fine and what youd expect, but for me, the discussion boards were a lot of pointless work that didnt feel like I was getting much out of. He was a fair grader and gave good feedback.
Discussion board heavy. Theyre creative though, and relatively easy to answer. Essays are fine, and he gives a lot of time for you to write them.
Mr. Maltman was a great professor. You can tell he truly cares about his work and students. I took his summer class and there was 4 discussion boards a week and an essay due every other week for a total of 3 essays. he gives you a fair amount of work but its super easy and he grades fairly. He helps you out with essays if you ask.
Mr. Maltman was a great professor, he takes his time to give you clear feedback on your work so you know exactly where you went wrong, if you follow this you will get you A. I will say, the discussion posts were time-consuming and a bit annoying, but once you got the hang of it, it was fine. Since this class was online, I didn't go to meetings.
I took a all online summer course lots of discussions and papers it was a good class. He was very helpful in reviewing my papers and giving good advice before they were due
Thomas was an amazing professor and honestly, taught me so much. The feedback he gave was so useful and helped progress my writing from draft to draft. Within a semester he taught me plenty about different formats of writing and the ways I could develop ideas and organize my thoughts.
It's a writing class, so get ready to write, like a lot. He's an amazing teacher, you'll actually learn. But, the weekly discussion boards can be very time-consuming. He's also very easy to communicate with and genuinely wants you to do your best.
Professor Maltman's lectures provided resourceful information on improving my writing, established clear criteria for assignments, and offered opportunities for students to earn bonus points and feedback on essays. I often found reading/writing boring, but now I invest myself in reading/writing. I recommend taking his blended/hybrid class.
Its a writing class, so it is expected that you write a LOT and he does provide good feedback which definitely helps you. He is understanding and caring. There are weekly discussion boards which were kinda hard but if you get them done quickly it won't be a problem. Lets you know 2-3 weeks before an assignment or an essay is due. Would recommend.
TAKE YOUR WRITING CLASS WITH HIM! He is absolutely amazing and gives great feedback so you can improve your writing. There are an average of 4 discussion boards a week but if you stay on top of your work they are easy to complete. He gives you a large amount of time to complete your essays so you can review and perfect them before submission.
Thomas was the best professor I have ever had. He wants the best for each of his students. His in-person lectures are funny and enjoyable while being super informative. He gives vast amounts of feedback and deeply cares about helping you improve your writing. TAKE HIS CLASS if you need to take a writing course. He cares. Classwork is very heavy.
Professor Maltman was an absolute pleasure to have as a teacher. This wasn't necessarily an easy A, but if you put in the time and effort participating in discussions and writing essays you will do well. I would recommend this class to anyone that actually wants to improve their writing skills, and is willing to do the work.
I highly recommend taking this class if you need it and want a good instructor that gives great feedback. I took Thomas' online class this 2023 Summer term and it was one of the easiest grades I received. I would have gotten an A but I was in Europe for a majority of the term so I slacked off a bit. He gives great feedback, and cares about us!
There was a lot of homework but nothing that wasn't manageable. Very nice guy that genuinely cares about his students. As someone who didn't enjoy writing much, I was dreading this class. I got very lucky to have a prof who actually cared and wanted to help me get better at writing. One of the best profs I've had. Would highly recommend to all.
Prof Maltman is amazing. He wants you to succeed. There are a lot of discussion boards to keep up with every week, but you can earn extra credit on some of them. You can also get feedback from him on every essay before it's due, in addition to peer feedback.
Professor Maltman was so caring and beyond sweet. He's a really easy grader and is very supportive of ideas/willing to help his students. Maltman is great at responding to emails, connecting with students, and motivating students. Class is VERY work heavy with consistent essays & readers responses. He's understanding of late work, just communicate.
Maltman is the best professor I've ever had. He takes an interest in every. student and made me really excited to show up to his class every time. His genuinely thought out lectures are fun and inspiring. Mr. Maltman is an awesome teacher and a very very respectable man.
He truly cares about his students and is accessible outside of class. Theres essays due about every 2 weeks and 3-4 discussion posts every week. You can email him your essay before its due and he will give you feedback. The discussion boards can get annoying and they are time consuming.
My favorite thing about Professor Maltman was his genuine passion for writing and the interesting material we got to read and write about in class. He is clear on expectations for assignments and offers a variety of fun, extra credit opportunities throughout the semester. Class participation is important, but not intimidating! Highly recommend!
Professor Maltman gave me the impression that he wants you to build writing skills, not only for success in this class, but for college in general. He is enthusiastic about the subject and gives feedback on your essays before the due date if you ask for it. In addition, the discussion boards help build the necessary skills in an entertaining way.
Professor Maltman is an amazing teacher who genuinely cares about each of his students. He made my writing significantly better and taught me important concepts that I'll be using for the rest of my student career. Usually 4 discussion posts a week and an essay each month, which can feel like a lot at times. Would 100% recommend him to everyone.
Consider yourself EXTREMELY lucky if you get learn under him. Class isn't about busy work, pointless worksheets, or long books you have no interest in reading. He want's you to grow. His assignments are intended to inspire, he provides personal prompts that I wanted to write about. Maltman is the bar all other profs should aspire towards.
Thomas Maltman is a great guy and a good teacher but Holy it is a LOT!!!!!!!!!!!! of work. He assigns 3-4 long discussion boards a week and essays due every 2-3 weeks. This class was literally the amount of work of all my other classes combined for 4 credits. If you actually enjoy writing take maltman otherwise don't burden yourself with his class.
I can't lie he's aa professor who LOVES his job but its ALOT of homework and you do 3-4 long essays
He is the nicest teacher. He is passionate about what he teaches and wants to help you. Super understanding. I highly suggest building a relationship with him, he will be more likely to help you. He gives great feedback on essays if you ask. There is a lot of daily homework assigned, 4-5 essays, one 10 page one. It's easy if you put in effort.
Mr. Maltman is so kind and soft spoken. He truly cares about what he's teaching and he won't hesitate to help you- you just need to ask. 4-5 essays for the whole semester, and daily reading/writing homework. There is a heavy workload, but if you put in effort you will pass. Attendance is not mandatory, but I recommend it for rubric explanations.
This professor genuinely cares about their students and always provides thoughtful, encouraging feedback. They truly want you to learn and succeed. Such a kind and understanding person, and they even accept late work!
Very Good professor.
Maltman is a great teacher! He does an amazing job teaching the material and is such a kind and caring person. Beware though! You WILL be doing 3-5 lengthy discussion boards a week as well as a 4-12 page paper due every 2-3 weeks. You will also never get 100%. At least one point will be taken off each paper no matter what. Gives great feedback.
Professor Maltman is an engaging instructor who genuinely cares about helping students improve their writing. The class has a good amount of work, but with tools like Unstuck ai, it's manageable. Highly recommended for developing essential skills.
I had this professor for college writing as an in person class. This is straight up the best teacher i've ever had in my entire time doing school. The class may be difficult if you're not great at writing but honestly he makes it very doable for just about anyone.
Mr.Maltman is an awesome and caring professor. His classes are so fun and engaging and he was very understanding of my health issues near the end of the semester. He clearly cares about writing. The only thing id say is that the discussion boards can be tedious IF you don't plan ahead. But we all need challenge and practice. great professor.
He is caring and accessible outside of class. & He has published four novels! He is a profound professor. Great teacher. Learned a lot. took summer semester. A lot of work, but if you put in time and effort you will succeed. He knows creativity and understands we are all different with our learning styles, which is important especially in writing!
Professor Maltman is awesome!! He gives extremely good feedback and is very responsive through email. There is a LOT of work in this class, which is exhausting, but as long as you break the workload down into smaller chunks, it becomes more manageable. Make sure to post discussions early. This professor acknowledges hard work, even if not perfect.
Professor Maltman really cares about getting his students to produce the best work. You will have to print out a lot of papers. Lots of reading, writing, and journals! Lots of good feedback, more effort = better reward.
This class was great! The essays are fun and engaging, and there are only about 5 total essays! Prof. Maltman gives good feedback and actually cares about student success. He offers extra credit, too. The only drawback I can think of is the discussion boards. There are a lot of them, and some you have to read a lot; and they are just exhausting.
I took this class in a compressed summer course and still received an A despite even heavier workload. Lots of discussion posts that you NEED to participate in. He is very inspiring, caring, friendly, and an author himself. He made writing fun with the themes he chose, and his passion for writing. Fair grader as well. Would definitely take again.
Assigns a lot of work, but it all felt worthwhile. I am way more confident in my writing after taking this course.
He's nice but either he assigns too much work or the other ENGC1101 instructors aren't assigning enough work based on what I've seen from my friends. Picking one instructor over the other shouldn't cause a significant difference in workload.
He was very caring and genuinely wanted you to succeed. He's quick to answer emails, and he gave out a lot of extra credit, which helped me a ton. There's a lot of discussion boards, but they're all relevant to what we learned during the week. Lots of essays, but they were fun to write. He's very fair with grading. Wonderful class overall.
