great teacher
I would give this teacher beyond a 5 point rating. I am a first time college student and I couldn't be any more happier with the teachers I currently have. His class was definitely worth taking. He is someone I was able to ask any questions and would take his time to explain my question in details. One of the BEST teachers i've ever had.
One of the best teachers Ive had in school history. His class is easy and lectures are great. Participation and attendance matters. He will explain in detail any question you may have. Very caring of his students passing his class, and gives extra credit. I highly recommend him. I will be taking his next course spring 2019
Amazing professor taking him for another class, cant wait!
Good class
there are online discussions that you need to participate in, but overall it is a very fun class to go to and he is the kind of professor you can email if you ever have a problem with the class or can't make it to a class, very understanding. I would 100% take another one of his classes!
Professor Mellana has inspirational teaching method thatsinteractive and makes the material fun and easy to understand. All assignments are in the syllabus or assigned by him in class, so I suggest dont skip. Hw is canvas discussions so dont lag. If you happen to fail doing that easy part he offers extra credit, you cant fail.
Mr. Mellana was such a great teacher! Most of the homework is online and is based on the chapters he goes over in class. Super easy stuff. Our final was just a group presentation on whatever topic of our choice relating to what weve learned. Hes also very funny and nice, so I cant wait to take his class for AJ 160.
Amazing professor. Learned a lot about Law enforcement and the dynamics to the criminal justice system. Interesting lectures, homework every week (but not hard), expect a midterm and final. Do your work and you'll pass. EASY A! Taking him again for another AJ course.
Hes a great professor i enjoyed his class gives respect to others
Great Professor. Super respectful and knowledgeable about his field. Has lots of great stories and makes the class go by fast. He does give homework but its always an easy discussion based on reading that you have a week to complete. as long as you show up you will pass. Easiest college class I've ever taken.
Awesome
He's by far the best professor ever. His experience in the field is vast and does not hesitate to joke around. Love it!
Hes a real one. He tells lots of stories about real life experiences in the field- already a good sign that he knows what hes talking about. Clear understanding of the material, gives clear instructions on what was expected.
Detective Mellana is a really chill, caring professor who makes class easy and fun. In every class, we always talked about recent events around the world and how we are doing, with or without regards to these events. I would definitely recommend Mellana if youre considering taking an AJ class!
One of my favorite classes Ive ever taken! As long as you participate in the weekly assignment and show up, you will receive an easy A. Mr. Mellana is such a hilarious, easygoing guy who has taught me a lot of life lessons. Your perspective about law enforcement truly changes with his class.
Professor Mellana is vey respectful and professional.
You are an amazing teacher! I am very glad I keep on taking your class.
Professor Mellana's class is one you would not want to miss, besides the fact that your grade does depend on you attending class... He provides insightful feedback and constantly tries to get students involved in his class. While I took his class, he did offer 2 extra credit opportunities which were both fun. Overall, a great professor!
He is literally the best professor I have ever had! He's super funny and really teaches you what you need to learn throught varries of activities. He is a great mentor and an inspirational role modle. I'm looking foward to taking more of his classes.
Mellana was the best professor I ever had. I had him for two semesters and passed both times. Super laid back and understanding and he hates when class takes a long time. Plus he is a detective so his teaching is based off of his experience not just by the book which was really cool.
This class has no pressure like other classes, does not feel like being forced to go and study but feels free and entertaining.
Mellana is an inspiring police officer and even better professor. His lectures cover the criteria exceptionally and give you a perception of the concept in an applied manner. Using his life examples as a officer his class is a great learning experience. He is also very caring of his students and will help guide you if you need help seeking job info
Super chill and understanding professor! Attendance is part of your grade. His lectures are more like class discussions. He is a detective so he has interesting stories. Class does not go for more than 1 hour and a half, if that. took him over the summer and did not open the book once.
Actually really chill and a pretty cool person. He likes to crack jokes, smiles through the pain, and is very accepting of anyone's predicaments or conditions. I had to leave the country and was absent for 2 weeks. Even though attendance is part of the grade, I still got a B. Overall, one of the better professors I had.
I took Mr. Mellanas class over the summer and learned a lot about criminology. The text book was suggested but not mandatory which was nice! If you want to learn more about criminology or law enforcement Mr. Mellana is a great instructor!
I love Professor Mellana ! He is by far the best criminal justice professor I have taken in my 4 years of being in Community college . He truly cares about his students and is willing to help in any way . He is a true gem !! Pick his brain if you want to be in the law field because he knows all the answers !
Hes seriously one of the best professors Ive taken .. such a laid back teacher he cares for his students .. you can ask any questions if you dont understand anything and he does not make you feel uncomfortable.. there is a quite few discussions but they are all easy .. I would totally take his class again
He is the best! Knows what he's talking about and overall just a great teacher and person! Would love to take another one of his classes,
I've taken all of Mellana's classes, he's super layed back and really funny. If you pay attention, you'll learn a lot in his class, he's not much of an text book person but you learn all there is to know with his stories. If you think you might have to withdraw from his class, I highly recommend talking to him first. His classes are all easy A's.
Great teacher! He is a very genuine person and truly cares about your grade. He is also very helpful so feel free to ask him anything!
5 STARS!!!!!! Hes a very caring professor and wants you to succeed in his class. Hes hilarious, he makes the whole class laugh all the time. TAKE HIM YOU WONT REGRET IT.
Best professor in cypress College and especially if you are looking for a career in law enforcement he is by far the best resource . He is a very caring professor and truly cares for his students.
Honestly, I thoroughly enjoyed this class. Yes, participation absolutely matters and you need to show up, but he is very funny and makes the class very entertaining. He mixed up lectures with videos and made it relevant to kids our age. It was a very manageable class and was overall very interesting. I highly recommend taking this class.
He is a very nice and understanding teacher. Very familiar with his students and very funny.
Professor Mellana is one of the best teachers at Cypress College. He is a well-known detective that brings "Real Life" teaching in all classrooms. He is flexible in teaching students from high school to all the way in college. I grasped all the concepts of criminal justice just by his experiences and the text book. I recommend him.... BY FAR.
Mellana is the GOAT. If you are a criminal justice major, take him. You will learned a lot not just from the class but his experiences as a former officer.
This year we were affected by the COVID-19. The class transitioned to online format. It was really easy. We met on zoom once a week and went over our assignments. Professor Mellana was really respectful and answered any questions that we had. The class was super easy I would recommend anyone to take this class with him.
Professor Mellana is a great professor! I appreciated his descriptive feedback on my assignments which helped me improve on my reports. I am a student who's questions develop questions and Professor Mellana was penitent answered all of them. He will work with you on attendance and assignment deadlines but communication is key! He's awesome !
If you need to take a AJ class at Cypress College Professor Mellana is your best choice. He makes class enjoyable and talks about his experience in the field and relates them to the lesson. He cares for his student and values their time he understand that students have other priorities other than academia. Great experience over all.
I took aj 120 this past semester and even with COVID making it an online class I still learned a bunch and Mr. Mellana checked in with us frequently.
Really openminded and laid back with workload. Discussion-based class, no textbook use other than simple online work with websites and videos.
If you are interested in taking this class, TAKE IT ! Professor Mellana is a laid back, & easy teacher. Took his class over the summer and it was a fun class & we watched videos. Some days class was only an hour long.
I highly recommend taking this class if you are interested in the subject. Mr. Mellana is a great source for information, very understanding, and it felt like he genuinely cared about us. This is the second class I have taken that he's taught, and I would take another if I could.
Thomas Mellana was a great teacher, he really opened my mind up to a new way of looking at the criminal justice system and its values. Although I don't agree with some things I learned again, it was nice to see from a different perspective. Other than that, he was a great professor.
Mr. Mellana is a really cool professor! I came into his class with many misconceptions and through his lectures, we gained really important perspectives and ways to view the world. I totally recommend taking a class of his, and I think you would learn a lot
Professor Mellana is a really nice guy and his class was really informative. It is not hard at all, For the summer semester we had one weekly discussion where we reply to two people and one zoom meeting. I really recommend taking this class, it's not hard at all but you still learn a lot of things.
We had 1 discussion a week for homework except for the last week, which was a final paper + discussion. There are modules w/ info to help with the discussion, & in Zoom meetings, we would talk about last week's info & the next week's info. He was respectful of our opinions & explained situations from his POV as a police officer & a detective.
I thought professor mellana was a great teacher. With things being online, we had a zoom session every week where we would talk about the discussion question prior to the zoom session. I liked hearing his stories as a police officer and he really helped me see things from his perspective on sensitive matters. Take his class!
best professor ever , hes a cop too so you really get good insights. very understanding & funny !
Very nice and an easy class. Talks about present-day topics and issues with law enforcement. Not really focused on the textbook - if you want to learn more about the specifics of Law Enforcement, read the assigned reading.
After taking Professor Mellana's class, I learned much more about criminal law. He is super fun and easy to talk to and values our opinions. I would definitely recommend taking his class.
I am a dual enrollment student who took Professor Mellana's AJ110 Introduction Criminal Justice course and I would definitely recommend the class! Professor Mellana is respectful towards everyone's opinions and makes this class very interesting.
He is a very nice professor and makes learning very easy for his students.
Mr. Mellana is an amazing professor who is an inspiration to me. He inspires me to succeed in all aspects of life and to be a strong willed person. He keeps lectures interesting by implementing personal experiences, so I never really get bored in class. Discussion questions and assignments given are insightful and to the point.
Such an amazing teacher. Wants to hear everyones opinion and it is an easy A. There wasn't a-lot of homework probably just 5-6 discussion post. I recommend this class to anymore because he really opens your eyes.
I suggest that if you need to take AJ110C that you take this professor. He is very helpful and gives interesting lectures. Everything was relevant to whats going on in today's society.
Best professor ever! I loved this class and he made it fun and very interesting. Would take his class again. Professor Mellana gives good feedback and gives extra credit.
10/10 recommend! He makes his lectures very interesting with his own stories and experiences as a police officer. As long as you do your assignments, quizzes, attend lectures- then you'll pass.
Even though Mellana had a busy schedule during the semester, I learned a lot in this class in the e-Lessons. He is very friendly and easy to talk to if you have any questions or disagree with him during lectures. If you want to learn about how criminal investigation works, take his class!
Mellana is the best professors ever!
Mellana is easily one of my favorite professors. His lectures are super interesting and best of all the class isn't hard at all. Assignments were super simple, they were mainly discussion posts and quizzes that were easy! 1000/10 would recommend taking his class if you can!
The BEST professor!!! Pay Attention in class because he will call on you and he'll tell you story's when he was on duty, Honestly if you can't pass this class it was all on you.
Professor Mellana is so chill and really just wants his students to participate in his discussions. He rarely gives assignments and doesn't grade harshly, so its almost impossible to fail to his class. He talks about his experiences as an officer and its very interesting. I definitely recommend taking his classes if its for your major or gen ed!
I would def recommend his class. He is such a great prof. There are some discussions and some work. Lectures are great and he is a very caring prof. Communicates well. Would take his class all over again.
This class is one of the best classes that I took. The discussions are great for sharing and understanding different perspectives and that what helps you learn. He responds to the emails in a short time period. He is lenient and easy going. He makes the subject very interesting to learn about. I recommend taking this professor!
I took this class online and over the summer. All we did were discussions. It was 1-2 discussions a week. We had to respond to the question and then respond to 2 other peers. Mr. Mellana graded on your discussion content, so all you really need to do is research thoroughly, type, and post. You'll get a high grade if you keep up, really easy!
A great professor when it comes to the subject of anything criminal justice and law enforcement related, due to Professor Mellana being a police officer himself. I had also taken another course instructed by him where there were mandatory online meetings, and participation was important to him. He is lenient on late work and is easygoing.
This class was taken during the summer and I must say that it was probably the most easiest class that I have taken. To sum it up, 1-2 discussions were given every week. The discussions itself allowed me to view other students' perspectives, which was quite eye-opening. I'd take him again!
Professor Mellana's class was one of the few classes that I really enjoyed. He's a really chill professor that gives a lot of insight into law enforcement while making it fun and engaging. I definitely recommend!
I had no idea he was a policeman before taking the class! He really knows what he's teaching you and will keep you engaged with the topic without stressing you out over your letter grade. If you do your homework on time and continue to show up to class, there's no reason you won't ace the class.
Professor Mellana is a great professor, very down to earth. We only had 2 quizzes all semester and barely had any discussions. He wants class participation when it comes to the chapter of the week. I would totally take this class again. Easy A!
allows for different opinions without judgment Has profession in criminal justice which makes the lectures more interesting
Down to earth, very chill and lets you speak your mind without judgment.
Amazing professor, had a lot of fun in this class. Just a few easy light assignments/discussion boards outside of class. Professor really just wants students to voice their opinion during lecture and teach through talking. Highly recommend his class!
He's a very helpful professor and will work with anyone's schedule.
Professor Mellana is such a wonderful professor, the best I've encountered in my college years. Very honest and is respectful of others' opinions. Has really interesting lectures and very easy-going class. Participation does matter in this class, do not be afraid to speak up, ask questions. Very respectful class and safe environment.
The pretty great professor had quite interesting lectures and scenarios that keep our brain thinking. He is a humorous guy and the assignments are not really hard. He even allowed students to turn in assignments late, with I believe for full credit- I don't quite remember but yeah. Awesome teacher, would one hundred percent take his class again!
Hw is easy and is mainly discussions and whatever's in the textbook. The study guides that are what's on the tests/quizzes. Overall, an easy online class.
Class is an easy A. Professor Mellana gives super interesting lectures and it's a really engaging class. He's experience in law enforcement provides a lot of insight if you have any questions. Highly recommend to take him.
Great Instructor, Class time and lectures were fun and humourous, and you learned a lot just from that. Participation matters and it makes the class more interesting when you ask different questions. I would take and recommend taking Instructor, Mellana over and over again.
Professor/officer Mellana was an awesome professor that gave so many opportunities to turn in your work late. Professor Mellana is also the perfect first year professor due to being extremely laid back and lenient on work in general in his class. Finally no test are required and his grading system is very generous.
He an awesome person just make sure you do the work
Professor/Officer Mellana is extremely chill and laid back. Not a lot of assignments and when you do get an assignment it is very straight forward and easy. Overall had a great experience in this class and highly recommend taking his classes.
such a cool easy going person assigns like one assignment a week if that, classes are usually packed doesn't care if you show up late
By far the best class I've ever taken at Cypress. Talks about real-world issues with his law enforcement background and experiences, and always appreciates input from his students. Gave one discussion once a week that takes less than twenty minutes. GOAT professor.
Tommy Mellana is one of the best professors out there!! I highly recommend anyone who's majoring in Administration of Justice or needs to take this class for a GE. His homework is straight forward and as long as you participate, you will pass! He also gives extra credit, gives great lectures and he's very funny. Great guy overall!!!
I liked Professor Melana's class; he's a funny and chill teacher and has great, interesting lectures! Attendance does matter because participation is a big part of grading, open talks with the class, and giving your opinion and perspective on certain topics he will talk about. He truly gives an amazing understanding of how the legal system works:)
Solid professor overall. He's a very respectable man, and skipping his lectures is a loss on your part not only academically, but also because he gives really good life advice and answers questions in a realistic and educational way. The class was very easy but we still learned a lot. Amazing professor. Thank you Prof Mellana!!!
Amazing professor gives the best life advice and is the chief or commander of the cypress police department. He is the chill dad everyone needs to hear from.
Definition of a great professor.
I wish I could take every class with a professor like this. Just overall an outstanding professor who has real world experience in the field he's teaching. I actually looked forward to his class every week because he doesn't waste your time with nonsense topics and has great personal stories from his work as a police officer.
Very fun class, had a lot of fun and learned a lot from his lectures and him talking about his experience as a police officer
Learned a lot during this course. Professor Mellana is awesome. He does require participation in class.
Chill professor. Class is not very hard, just do your work and you'll be fine. Very hard to do bad in this class.
Professor Mellana is knowledgeable and keeps the class engaging with real world examples. He explains concepts clearly and connects the material to how the criminal justice system actually works. Good professor who cares about the subject.
