Professor Moilanen "Tom" is awesome!!! I had to take speech as a pre-req and was absolutely dreading it, but he made this class interesting and somewhat fun. Tom will help in any way possible to make it more comfortable for the student. If he is an option for a speech class you need - take him and you will be glad you did.

This class was a blast. i couldn't have asked for a better communications teacher or a better group of people in this class. the speeches were a bit nerve racking but nothing i couldn't over come. all and all a faboulus class

Tom is an incredible teacher. The class was challenging, and I had to work hard, but it was worth it. He truly cares about teaching and the students. Best teacher I've encountered and would recommend to everyone. You won't be sorry.

Tom is an awesome professor! He teaches material that i actually use in my day to day life and for my future. (When do you ever say that about a class) Anyway, class is easy, rarely any notes. He really got through to me and enhanced my speech giving skills. Take him for comm 101 if you can, you won't regret it!!!

Thomas is a unique teacher. He is honest and doesn't beat around the bush. You should not talk about religon in his class. When you are speaking do not say certain words he will mark you down. (like, umm) etc. Easy A if you know what your talking about when you speak. Take notes when he speaks. Dont buy the textbook, not needed at all.

AWESOME CLASS hands down. Tom is by far the best professor anyone could hope to get for this class. I just kicked back and enjoyed the whole semester because he makes it that much fun. Even when grading he can be very lenient and understanding. He's hilarious and encourages you to be yourself. Only homework is working on speeches (4).

I loved Tom! He made class very easy and fun! Though his appearance may not be professional his class was amazing. The work was easy and he is more than willing to help anyone that needs it. Easiest com professor! one minterm and one final got an a on both NO need to study they are so easy! he requires four speeches but goes threw what you need to include in them. if you show up to class (and try to give the speeches) there is no way you can fail

I loved this class! He's really good at lecturing so you barely even remember you're a class. He's very understanding and easy-going. As long as you show up for class, especially on your speech day, this class will be a breeze for you. Oh and if you're short on money, I wouldn't buy the book. I only opened it once.

Tom is the best professor you can ever get for COM 101. This class was a breeze for me. I got an A on everything! He's hilarious and is super laid back. Take him! You don't even really need the book either because he helps you understand everything so well!

Great Professor he really revamped my faith in teachers. I hated the thought of speaking in front of people, but he helped boost my confidence and improved my overall communication skills.

I'm not going to tell you that this was an easy class, but what I will tell you is that because of Tom's teaching, I can speak in front of people just fine, now. He takes the time to get to know you, understand you, and guide you. He lets you enjoy the class just as much as he does. I strongly recommend Thomas Moilanen; he's an amazing instructor.

Tom is an excellent teacher. He is funny and can get a bit side tracked at times, but he covers the material. You get plenty of time to prepare your speeches and he gives you the rubric to work from. Also provides study guides for tests. He is a down to earth caring man. Funny as hell too!

Great professor! This is an instructor you want for a public speaking course. He is very easy going, and is very helpful. I was dreading taking this course. But it turns out to be the funnest class I've ever taken.

Excellent professor. He is extremely helpful, and as mentioned in another review, he takes time to get to know you and takes an interest in you as a person, not just a student. His anecdotes and examples are spot-on. Overall, I really enjoyed his class, his demeanor and his style, and have recommended him to friends.

Tom is a wonderful teacher who makes his expectations very clear, and he provides you with the tools to meet those expectations. He and I are very different, but this did not hinder his ability to relate to me. I highly recommend his class. Especially if public speaking is not your comfort zone.

Spring 2013 Mr. T is by far my FAV prof! He has passion 4 his class. U don't have 2 attend but U loose out on info 4 speeches. He makes u interested in going to class with all his knowledge n stories I enjoyed every mintue of class. His class is a breeze as long as you participate in the 4 speeches (Attend speech days). He reviews his exams to the T so there isn't any reason to do poorly on them. He's pretty funny and easy-going.

He is definitely THE BEST professor I have ever had! He is so encouraging, he gets straight to the point, has great constructive criticism, and is such a cool guy. I learned so much from him and can't wait to take another class from him. Just don't be late!! That's his BIGGEST pet peeve.

LOVE his class I take his class once a week for 3 hrs. His lectures are simple just take notelisten and you will ACE the tests. 4 Speeches, we've already done 2 and I've gotten As on both and I hated public speaking. Tom's class has made it so much easier for me to speak in front of groups. You'll laugh the whole time! Super chill dude!

I take this class once a week and I love it. Tom is funny and casual. 4 speeches, easy midterm with review, and a final. Grading is helpful and the speeches are pretty easy even though I had a tough time with them because I'm an "um-er". Lectures are very few and not boring. No textbook necessary. He's really a 1010.

I took this class for my communication credit and it was an easy A. Great professor!! This class is very easy, two tests, and four speeches. It is all very clearly laid out for you in the syllabus. Best part was it was a class of 15 so don't fret if you're afraid of getting up in front of a crowd to speak. We got out early almost every day too!

Tom is a fun professor who is easy to speak to and is entertaining to watch. All around great professor who is obviously passionate about literature and makes students feel at ease that may be anxious about speaking in front of class. Don't be afraid to take COM 101, especially when you have a professor like Tom.

Finished up his class today. It was a class that met for once a week for about three hours. Most weeks we didn't use up the full class time. It really wasn't required. I'm generally shy and highly fearful of public speaking but he pushed us out there with a much needed tough love. He's welcoming to all walks of life and has a feisty sense of humor.

He's such a funny guy! I took him Thursday night for 3 hours long! Time flies with this professor, he's incredibly chill. Do your speeches and take notes and you'll surely get a good grade. Remember, the cat gets tired after the catnip so the last answer on both exams is D-All of the above!

If I could have Professor Tom as my professor in all the classes I need to take... THAT WOULD BE AWESOME!!! I loved his class and how he teaches. Amazing teacher, defiantly makes the class enjoyable and easy if you know what he's looking for. Make sure that all your speeches are well prepared but he is big on extemporaneous delivery. I really enjoyed this class, he is someone i will be seeking out for other classes as COM is my major.

Professor Moilanen is awesome. He's a huge dork but very funny and incredibly smart and knowledgeable about his subject. Expectations are very clear, 4 speeches and 2 tests which you will review entirely before the test day. Easy grader but gives excellent feedback; you will become a better public speaker after taking this class, guaranteed.

Taking COM 101 with Prof. Moilanen was a real treat. He's funny, intelligent, and tries to make a usually boring class interesting. He doesn't assign homework beyond the speeches, and encourages interesting speech ideas. If you want to enjoy a required course like COM 101, take it with him.

4 speeches (story telling, demonstrative, informative, persuasive) and two exams ( one has 50 questions which costs 100 points and the other has 100 questions which costs 200 points). Most of test answers were described in class.

Professor Thomas ! I learned so much in this class and my fear of public speaking dropped from 10 to a 0. Honestly there is no one better then him! He is nice and listens to his students and gives great feedback. I'm sad this class is over I enjoyed it so much! He loves his cat! Very funny and fun class! Learned so much in this class! It's public speaking, so there are four solo speeches. Topics can be virtually anything you're interested in- the point is learning to speak, not be "politically correct". He is interesting, interested in the speeches, and extremely supportive. LATENESS is a problem, especially on speech days- because you're messing someone else up. Wait outside.

Enjoyed his class even though I hate public speaking. Made me feel at ease about speaking in front of the class. Love his teaching style. I would definitely take another class of his if given the opportunity.

Moilanen was a fantastic professor! He made you feel comfortable speaking in front of the class. His jokes and random musical bits made this class very fun. There are 4 speeches and 2 tests and if you know your material and do the outline, the class is a breeze. He always goes over what is going to be on tests the class before. Highly recommend

Length of speeches (4 of them) are: 2-min, 5-min, 6-min, and 7 min. This class is not difficult. I didn't need my textbook because he went over everything that was going to be on the exams. Everyone who wants to pass the class has to speak, so if you're terrified of public speaking; know that there a bunch of others feeling the same way. Good luck!

Professor Tom is awesome. You get to pick your own topics for your speeches which really lets you be creative. He is also very good at giving constructive feedback and wants you to pass. Not to mention, he is an expert in his field and his level of knowledge is astounding. Great teacher and a real person.

1st off , I was terrified of all the speeches; it was the one class I wanted to avoid for as long as I could. BUT this teacher made the class a delight. He makes you feel comfortable, he is HILARIOUS and very smart. He knows his stuff. I got to where I was actually excited to go to his class. TAKE HIM! HE IS AMAZING !

He is a great instructor. It is a speech class so there is some effort in preping for those but besides that the amount of work needed is minimal. There is a mid-term and a final. Very easy going and would recommend taking him. As a com major I wish he taught more classes besides 101. No need for the book, he tells you exactly whats on the test.

This guy is honestly the most sincere and funniest COM instructor I know. One advice that I gotta say is that always have a backup plan if you're doing slides as a background in the speech. Other than that, he tries to work with you if you work with him. Lots and lots of bad puns and corny jokes, but I would def take this class again if I could

Really easy class, and such a funny professor. There are only 4 presentations all semester, which are all really easy. He gives rubrics,and great feedback. He makes class super enjoyable, even for the people who dread taking this class. Just don't miss your scheduled presentation day, he will not let you make it up.

He is a great professor with a great humor! He LOVES his cat! He is fair with grading speeches, if you miss the date for your speech he wont let you retake it! Notes are taken by listening, I wish the notes were on a slide or on the board! He goes over test 2 days before and doesn't really help if you need it. But other than that he is GREAT!

Professor Moilanen was amazing! Really made the class fun! I took his 4 week summer class at 7am. There was a speech every week. U get to pick the topic. The textbook isnt really needed bc he goes over what will be on the exams; I didnt purchase the book and got As on both the midterm and final. Would 100% take again! Final grade - A. TAKE HIM!

Easiest class ever. 4 speeches: 2, 4, 6, 9 minute speeches. Pratice it and you'll do great, also his lectures consist of talking about what will be on the midterm and final - take notes and you'll pass with an A. He is an amazing teacher, funny, and makes the class very fun and enjoyable. All he asks if for participation! Textbook isn't required.

If you're reading this, stop! Quick! Enroll in his class. Look no further- My fear of public speaking borders on phobia. Somehow, he made it enjoyable. He cares & encourages everyone not just as students, but as humans. What a brilliant mind and humanitarian. I am genuinely sad it's over; Moilanen is one of those you'll never forget.

This is a correction to the feed back I just left (most recent one). Class was NOT difficult. You need to make an effort, yes. But not unreasonably difficult. I wanted to rate Moilanen 5 stars all the way. ( Difficulty was perhaps between a 2-3.)

One of my favorite professors! He lets you do your speeches on mostly whatever you want as long as it relates to the topic, which makes it easy. He's not that tough of a grader and his lectures are super entertaining. You don't necessarily need the book as he covers everything in his lectures, so it's optional. Fun environment! Attendance mandatory

In the course there are 4 speeches, a midterm, and final exam. Very simple class and the professor is kind & funny. He grades fairly and gives great feedback and room for improvement. Considering it was online due to Covid, I personally believe it was quite simple to create speeches that you present to a camera rather than a live audience.

Make sure you turn in your work and follow instructions, its a bit of hard work and making sure to turn in things before its due. Ive been trying to avoid COM class but Im glad I took it. Its not all bad as it makes it out to be. Just do you work and its pretty easy to get a high grade.

Loved him. 4 speeches -2,4,6,9 minutes and hes NOT a strict grader if you gave it your best effort, he gives helpful feedback, not bad grade. Theres a Midterm and final. His lectures are funny and thoughtful and he tells you what will be on the exams so take notes. Easy A.

Absolutley love him! He is fun and engaging. He grades super lightly, his lectures are engaging, and the speeches are easy. Honestly my favorite class that semester. I guarentee you will love him.

if you need Com 101 take it with him!! you have 4 speeches but make sure you follow his prompt hes a light grader and as long as you follow the instructions you will do fine. make sure you take his notes because the exam is on everything he writes. make sure to study as well he will give a study guide with all of the answers just STUDY. easy A

super easy A and cool professor!! he yaps alot sometimes (but it never really bothered me). just make sure ur prepared on ur presentation days and this'll be the easiest A of ur life

Genuinely such an easy A. His requirements are pretty straight forward. At the beginning of the semester you will choose in what order you want to present and he will follow that sequence for every presentation. Just show up on time for presentation days, bring in your papers, and you will pass the class. Mid term, final, n 4 speeches.
