he is the smartest person that you will even met in your intire life. He will have a noble prize one day. Once the man mets you once he will never forget your name. Yet he is one of the hardest teacher that i have ever had
I love Tom. Lots of fun, accessible, urbane, sexy, super bright, animal.
Tough throughout the quarter but an easy final. By far the smartest person I've ever met.
a future noble prize winner, the toughest professor i have had so far, but definitely one of the best. he will definitely test your limits.
He is hard, arrogant, and intimidating.
Excellent teacher, favorite so far--taught in a sophisticated style with nice subtle humour--he earned my respect with the rigorousness of his midterms, but I was disappointed with the ease of the final, especially since one could drop their midterms.
Amazing teacher. If you tell him your name once he'll memorize and remember it for ever! Good person to shmooze up to for rec's, but you gotta get good grades and do well in class. He's got the brain size of an elephant, and the memory to match.
he knows what the hell he's doing. if you don't, he'll explain everything to you from the start (and he won't f up or try to bs you). he's known to be the hardest teacher for 112c, but if that is dependant on the difficulty of tests, I disagree.
Awesome teacher, a great guy too
Not the easiest professor but by far the BEST. He is the smartest professor and most helpfull. Take his class and you will all agree. Morton is #1.
Best chemistry professor I've had so far. Lectures were outstanding and never left me dozing off. Smartest prof on campus easily.
humorous, knows his stuff, buy the 4 bucks past midterms cuz they help a lot, grading curve are nice, and very very SMART! i just wished he taught the 112B instead of Hollis.
He is a great teacher cuz he uses real-life examples to explain orgain chemistry.
Two comments: (1) Dr. Morton visits this site often (2) Dr. Morton refers to himself in the third person
Genius and great teacher!
supercalifragilistic-expialidocious even if you hate chemistry, you won't find him atrocious! Don't draw five bonds to carbon because four is the most-is. supercalifragilistic-expialidocious!
As hard as they get in ochem, but easily the best professor out there. His knowledge base is immense and ever-expanding, he tries to remember student names, and he holds numerous study sessions before his exams.
One of the best teachers on campus and perhaps the smartest. Very helpful and friendly.
He's an exceptional professor and very knowledgeable about organic chemistry. I felt he made his class fair in that achieving a good grade came with putting time and effort into the subject matter. He also made the class fun with his demonstrations (e.g. bow tie and fischer projections)
Dr. Morton is scary smart, but is a very entertaining lecturer. I had him for two quarters of O Chem. His tests are hard. If you want to compare your grade to another teacher's class, up it by one full letter grade. For example, a B is an A in any other class. I learned a ton. Thanx, Doc!
Fantastic lecturer and cool guy. Appears in the 1978 Guiness Book of World Records for "constructing the largest, completely edible model of benzene." Ask to see the news blurb that hangs in his office.
Professor Morton's tests are extremely difficult, but he makes up for it in his enthusiam for teaching. Very approachable and helpful during office hours and EXTREMELY intelligent in the field of chemistry. Makes coming to class enjoyable with his bow tie joke and songs.
he is brilliant and very difficult...study!!!
Super smart guy. Wont read off notes while lecture - he has none to read off of! Tests are relatively difficult. Expects you to memorize reactions, but is very helpful when in office hours or after class.
really didn't like the way he lectured..always erased and went back to previous notes to modify them. Never went to class..I think it's easier just learning from the book. He goes too fast that most people stare in a daze.
loved the class in the begining. Pushed myself and score well on a hard, yet fair midterm. yet, second midterm was a joke. 60 points on ONE EASY isoprene unit? give me a break! Gave those that barely studied an easy good grade and set back those who actually study hard for tests. Disappointed!
Let me start off by saying MORTON IS THE BEST TEACHER IN THE WORLD OF CHEMISTRY. I never learned anything in my life until I met Morton. Ppl in here that say he's hard are just stupid altogether. If you can mass Wirz in general Chem, you could handle this. I slacked all my life and ended up with an A+! Nucleophilic my @$$!
Morton is a good lecturer but he goes extremely fast and his exams are very difficult
Morton is an inspiring professor because he challenges you-and if you are a science major, you should like that! Go to lecture and definitely go to office hours because he slows the material down to an understandable rate.
They say his tests are 'eloquent'. If by eloquent you mean convoluted and confusing as hell then yes, his tests are eloquent. If his tests were more straightforward it'd be a much funner class.
WHAT A PROFESSOR!!!!!!!!! Never in my whole experience have i learned sooo much about chemistry. If you truly have passion to become a well educated science major then this is the class for you. That doesnt go without saying that this class is easy. ITS NOT!!! I busted my ass in this class and it turly paid off. Thank you Dr. Morton. Your the best!
Morton is a magnficent teacher. I can truly say he is the greatest teacher I have had at UCR. The material is difficult, but if you make an effort to go to office hours, he clarifies his obscure lectures everytime. Do the practice tests over and over again, he repeats similar problems always.
He's an excellent lecturer, but his exams are extremely insane! His high expectations in the class bites, but he gives out his old exams so you can study off them. Barely went to class, and still passed the class. Dedicated, and inspirational, but not the easiest class.
The main reason why I didn't like this class was his tests were too analytical. I understood all the material but the way he phrases his test questions...it's like reading an essay question just to do a simple problem. With the stress and etc on a test day it's very hard to figure what hes askin 4
Morton R0x0rZ. His exams are like puzzles. Everytime I do one of his tests, it's like tetris. And who in hell doesn't like tetris? His songs are incredible! I'm motivated to write a song on chemistry now! Also, who got his extra credit? It was Harry, Marry, and John Kerry?
This professor sucks. he didn't explain his stuff very well and graded extremely hard on the exams. before taking this class, i already took 5 chemistry classes included 3 honors classes. on those 5 classes, i got 4 As and 1 A-. therefore, i believe i am good in chemistry, but i got a C- in Morton's class and this is because of Morton, not me.
I don't understand why some people think he is so great...frankly, I didn't think he was all that fascinating or that great of a lecturer...but if you take the time to study on your own, you will still do fine in his class..study the type of old exam qs and the hw isn't worthwhile unlike marsella's and midland's class..is never available for appts.
Dr. Morton is the coolest science professor i've ever had. his class is incredibly difficult, but if you study the booklet of old tests, you'll be fine. make sure you go to every lecture and his office hrs are pretty helpful, if not amusing. i did crappy on the first 2 midterms and studied my ass off for the final and did really well in the class.
Difficult professor because he emphasizes concepts over memorization. I am one of the nerds on the right side of the curve and I enjoyed his class. If you are not a quick analytical thinker, you will loathe his exams. Think Marsella in what's emphasized, but the questions are much tougher. You do not need to memorize as much as you think.
He is extremely intellegent. Although his exam may seem impossible, they're not....they're actually not bad at all if you have someone who really knows what they're doing (like a tutor) to simplify it for you.
hard class cool teacher. knows a little about everything. really easy going
morton is the SHIzNIT
good prtofessor, but hard class and watch out for his temper
No Comments
His tests are difficult, but he knows that, so he offers an exceptional amount of help outside of class. His office hour is more of a study group, which is incredibly helpful. When I took his course, he made one of his test questions so difficult, the TAs weren't able to grade it.
Im still taking his class, and i hate repeating what other ppl said before but... he is extremely, amazingly SEXY! He's also pbb the best professor that ucr has to offer. and you WiLL learn a lot in his class... even if you don't want to. ask him about the story of what happened to his stainless steel model kit... it will break your heart.. =(
Hands-down the smartest man on campus. He is brilliant, and projects himself excellently, without the use of notes or the book. He knows more about chemistry than anyone he is teaching will ever understand. His tests are difficult, but require only good thought process and a strong basis of chemistry concepts and synthesis of multiple topics.
Best Professor Ever. All the students who took pirrung because of his "easiness" missed out on the best professor you could ever have teach!
learned alot from him!!! review sessions def worth going to! the onli complaint was that his style of teaching takes a while to get used to..
Excellent professor. By far the best and most knowledgable. Greatly cares about students, is quick to learn each and every individual name. UCR needs more professors like Dr. Morton!
teaching style is a bit different from normal...his tests are unique too...use your models...tests always had something about resonance struc, newman proj, comparing two diff struc or rxns....make sure to read the tests carefully (word to word)...GOOD proffessor...very helpful go to office hours...overall great learning experience...
This guy is inspirational. Its a crime not to go to class because of all the knowledge he has. He loves his job and he loves the material. If you do all the homework, read ahead, and use models you'll do fine. Lecture isn't for children, and the people who sucked obviously didn't do the prelecture assignments.
Horrible professor, his tests are hard! You have to fully understand the concepts in order to pass his class. Class average for second midterm was 27! avoid if you don't want to fail.
OMG YOU HAVE TO UNDERSTAND CONCEPTS TO PASS A CLASS!? I WOULD HAVE NEVER GUESSED!!! ps... 2/5 of the final was from his 2nd midterm word for word.
knows a lot of stuff.....very good teacher if you want to learn, very good if you especially want to go to med school, his class will help you for the mcat..=)
Extremely intelligent! Good Luck future students.
He is a very smart prof. He comes to class with nothing in hand because he lectures at the top of his head. He does make alot of students frustrated because he goes to fast and goes way in depth. His test are different from any other o chem prof. He test are extremely hard and not alot of people finish it but his curve is NICE No one will fail
Impossible to understand during lecture. Focuses a lot on stereochemistry (while the textbook does not as much). Tests are very hard. Had to teach myself by reading the entire textbook. He does curve all of the tests though. Know rxns and stereochemistry of them.
Extreemly difficult to follow. avoid his class like the plague. Very funny and nice man but his test are so hard. He's a genius and expects you to be one as well apparently.
His lectures are extremely boring and hard to follow. If you look around the room, half the class isn't paying attention. I couldn't follow lecture and so I eventually stopped going. I highly recommend attending every SI.
His disorganized/jargon-filled lecturing made ochem more difficult than it should be. Realize the textbook will be your teacher that quarter. DO THE HW even if you don't want to. Know that those who do the HW, typically do better on his tests-it's the secret to success! Tests-can't finish in time, harder than it should be, but just try your best :)
you have to use your models to pass the class. he's very smart, but goes off topic in class. review sessions are useless and too long. he actually makes you think about the structures, and bonds, i learned more in his class than any other chem professors. his test is hard, but curves the grade.
Prof.Morton was the hardest teacher i ever had. I left his lectures feeling dumber not for the lack of effort either. He sets you up to fail from the begining. He does not expect the average student to get better than a fifty on the midterm nor does he expect the average student to complete it. our first midterm avg was 36 and second 24, Good luc
He is a smart man and because of this his lectures drift of topic a lot. His exams are very similar to problems out of the book. If you don't know how to visualize chemicals with your models or your mind, you're doomed.
Amazing teacher, extremely intelligent. I didn't miss a single lecture just because I felt I would miss out on so much just from that one hour. I don't see how anyone can fail with the ridiculously lenient curve he has for tests. Tests were not nearly as hard as other comments indicate. You mean you actually have to understand the material to p
His midterms/finals are insanely hard. I did most of my studying near the test dates so that might have been a factor, but I actually went through reading all the chapters (and did all the suggested homework problems) and i still found it hard.
Molecular Models! Helpful at office hours.
Prof. Morton is undoubtedly the smartest teacher on the UCR campus. I am a chem major and still go to his office hours every quarter for help because i am a chemistry major. He is by far the nicest person who is willing to patiently help any student, as long as they aren't wasting his time(seriously try reading your book before you give up.)
GREAT PROFESSOR! Very detailed and prepares you for subsequent quarters of organic chemistry. Tests are fairly difficult, but tests on concepts and combining concepts to get to a final product. I regret not going to his office hours, but has made OCHEM very interesting. Generous "curve" but modified based on clumping of scores.
DONT take this class if you're usually the avg student, you will fail trust me. This guy fails about 30% of his class because he feels that they are not ready for the next step. Hes a great teacher if you just want to learn a lot, he's a terrible teacher if you want to maintain a good gpa.
Professor Morton is Great! He is very helpful in office hours and will never deny a student help. He's tough, but it's worth it to take his class, because you understand the information well. I would suggest anyone who is taking ochem 112A to take Morton. He's a genius! and a very loveable teacher.
One of the hardest classes I've taken. You won't be able to understand anything during lecture without reading the book first. I'm an average student student in science and I passed with a B, so its possible. Midterm #1/#2 wasn't so bad, Final was hell. Tip: attend ALL SI's, it will help you. If you put effort into his class, you will learn ALOT.
Made exams harder than they needed to be. Fair with grading, and helpful, but lectures are rather disorganized. SI and extensive textbook use are your only hope! DO THE OLD EXAM PROBLEMS!!
He's very enthusiastic about ochem. He's definitely one of the smartest professors at UCR, but because he is so smart, he tends to rant on about stuff that we don't need to know. Study his practice midterms, go to SI, do practice problems, read the book, play with molecular models. You have to study really really hard to get a good grade!
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!I would rather take a 6AM class then take his class again. He is so smart that he can't teach it to students. I went to every lecture and he seemed like he was speaking in Alien. I got a D in the class because his Exams were RIDICULOUSLY hard. I'm taking the class over again and I have A, so im not just stupid! dont take him!
Class is not bad. His curve is generous. Just do the practice problems and you will be fine
I'm taking him currently. 70 on first midterm, 9 on second. Does that make any sense, considering I put more work into the 2nd test? Yes! because THE AVERAGE WAS SINGLE DIGITS. Avoid at ALL costs. Marsella for 112a is nothing compared to him.
Crazy class. Owned the first midterm, i think they seat you by grade (top=higher grade) and second midterm got owned. It was disastrous with an average of 18. The final was tough, but someone got a perfect. In general, if you want a good grade, go to all his Office Hours and SI sessions. They were helpful.

SUPER HARD!!! First midterm was ok... second midterm was TERRIBLE!! Class average was an 18.. and FINAL was just ridiculously hard. Do not take him unless, you know you can do well in organic chemistry. You have been warned...
Ugh...so hard! His ideal is to teach the students with the exams, which he considers practice for the Final (which can be over half your grade). Grading is convoluted, and involves gaps in scores. Textbook use is an absolute must. You learn a lot. He's a genius, and a great guy all around. But it's just not fair to compare us to the Marsella kids.
he's a genius but his teaching style is really different & difficult to adapt to. goes off on tangents alot in lecture too...grading is based on either the 2 midterms & lab, or the final & lab.pretty decent curve though considering his tests are HARD. learned ALOT but take marsella.. hes much easier!
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!! He does not know how to teach it so that students can understand. Always goes on tangents. The first midterm was ok the second one was hard and the final was very hard! He said the second midterm was easy but the average was an 18/100. This reflects on his teaching. Please do not take him if you have a choice!!
To get a good great with Morton, you have to understand the reactions to do well on final. Make flash cards and form a study group with people that know the stuff. The practice finals that can be purchased also help. Just wished he posted them on iLearn.
Extremely hard. Probably the hardest teacher for the 112 series, simply because he truly expects you to be a self-starter and doesn't lower his standards of learning. I got an A in the class by studying day in and day out. Just realize that this class is no joke, and it will test your willpower like no other. Good luck future students.
Morton is really short.
Morton is definitely hard, but his classes are always interesting and the hour always passes by so fast! He's helpful when you need help and very dedicated to his students! He'll stay HOURS at a review session he hosts. Nonetheless, I really enjoyed this class!
Excellent professor, I took his class Fall 2010. Yes, he is a difficult teacher and this class requires a lot of studying. However, studying for this class gives you the skills necessary to dominate the next ochem classes. For example, I got an A in Hooley's 112B and undoubtedly I will get an A in Larsen's. I attribute all of this to Morton's clas
This teacher is pretty terrible. In lecture he only teaches you the simplest form of a concept and makes the tests the hardest. He posts problem sets but doesn't show you how to do the problems. Did a practice exam but not even half of the material was on the midterm. Avoid him if you want to learn.
Ridiculously difficult but will definitely help for remaining o chem series. First midterm avg was 19% and second was 30%. Final reflects the homework and midterms tremendously
He goes over the material really fast and it doesnt make much sense. Gives you homework and doesnt teach you how to do it. He will test you on stuff he did taught (midterms) and the final is very hard. 25% passing rate Avoid him
Morton is one of the smartest people I know and I really respect his genius. Be warned that his class is difficult but not impossible. I got 97% on the first midterm, 87% on the second midterm and somewhere in the 90s on the final. This class will truly test your knowledge and will weed out those who are not meant for science. SI helped me ALOT.
I usually just sign up for classes that fit my schedule, and I don't have many upperclassmen friends, so I never knew what to expect. I fell behind the first few weeks when I was "learning" like everyone else..He seems almost incoherent during lectures, jumping all over the place and rushing. But he's extremely helpful oneonone and in office hours
Morton was the best and hardest professor I ever had. His brilliance is evident in the way he teaches completely without notes. O Chem is tough and he helped me get through it neuroscience, too. You'll remember his personality forever: his entire final review session consisted of the UCR drinking song, and instead of annoyance, he got a standing o.
The average on the first midterm was around 34/35? and the average on the second was 14/15. The final was very similar to the midterms. And then some. You need to know reactions from the 112A. You have to know the mechanism, especially since he likes to break up reagents. Go to SI. Do any problems he posts because he likes to put those on the exams
Morton expects a lot from the students and is a "hard" teacher, but you will learn and there will be a generous curve to compensate for the extremely low averages on exams.
Dr. Morton is a professor to stay away. He is an extremely knowledgeable person and funny, however, he is really hard. Most of the time, i did not understand what he was saying in lecture. He gives you little practice problems and expects you to know the material. Highly recommend to do whatever problems he post and read the book.
What that guy said VV. His tests are extremely difficult and he is all over the place in lecture. If you just want to pass and don't care about other things, I recommend taking the "other" professor.
If I had to give someone an award for being the worst professor ever, I would give it to Morton. Being knowledgable does not make you a good teacher if you cannot bring the material down to the level of students who have never seen it before. He prides himself in making the hardest tests. Trust me: do yourself a favor & AVOID at all costs!
Thomas Hellman Morton. His middle name implies what his class will be like-hell. Morton is a old-fashioned teacher who doesn't rely on the textbook at all. He doesn't give you problem sets or the answers to the practice midterms. Horrible lecturer. His tests are near impossible. Avoid him like the plague.
in simple terms: go to SI as if your grades depended on it, do practice problems, and don't depend on curve. his averages are a B- and i had smart people in my class (first midterm: around 50%, second midterm: around 30%, and final: around 45%). unexpected high averages and being a visual learner, i barely passed.
I got A's in CHEM1ABC and B in CHEM112A, but I barely passed this course. It was the worst grade of my life!!! It lowered my GPA from a 3.7 to 3.5. Avoid it if you want to have a high GPA. His tests were ridiculously difficult.
Seriously? Ya its hard af, but its doable. If you put in the effort you'll get the grade you deserve. I'll be real, I studied a lot and I am not one of those smart people....I just want to office hours (he is super helpful!) and studied the book. I did well and originally I thought I was gonna fail. My year the avg was a 33% and a 14%...
This was the first class I had to put in all my effort. It's very accurate saying that what you put in is what you'll get out. Take all the help that is given to you: SI sessions, Morton's OH, TA's OH, and review sessions. It's not just memorizing mechanisms, it's understanding each step. Tests were challenging, but he's a helpful professor.
It is by far the hardest section of the O Chem series. The prof. goes through a lot of material throughout the quarter and you better believe that everything will be covered on the exams. The midterms and final exam are not to be taken lightly. Make sure that you do exceptionally well in lab because it will help your overall grade. READ THE BOOK!!!
Great guy, but it was his rep of being the hardest teacher that got me my A. The best way to get an A is to understand the summaries in the end of the chapter in the text. And DO his practice exams, they are similar. And make sure you understand lab as well, because IR's, mass spec, and HNMR's WILL show up.
Aside from the obvious that organic chemistry is a difficult subject by itself, Morton makes it substantially more difficult than it needs to be. The McMurry textbook is essentially a paperweight in his eyes. Students are best off consulting external study guides for help. Lectures have often had nothing to do with course material.
Yes, this class is hard and yes, he does make this course a lot more difficult than it needs to be but it is definitely doable. if you work hard and take all opportunities to get help like SI, review sessions, and OHs, you will pass. reading helps you understand the material but practice exams and problem sets are very important!! he's a nice guy.
Professor Morton is a very hard professor and is often hard to understand in lecture. Go to SI sessions, they are very useful. Practice Mid terms are similar to actual mid terms. Average grades on mid terms was 45/100 on first mid term and 34/100 on the second mid term. Final exam is very hard. Learn how to and use molecular model kits very useful.
Don't be intimidated by the people telling you that Morton is a hard professor. He isn't. Sure, his exams are formatted differently but he doesn't throw any curveballs at you. His exams are fair, he's incredibly nice & has a great sense of humor. I really enjoyed his class. But I will say this: YOU NEED A MOLECULAR MODEL KIT IF YOU WANT TO LIVE
Good class. Confusing and dull lecture. Different but mediocre exams. Generous curves. Nice teacher.
Dr. Morton is EXTREMELY knowledgeable in the subject of Organic Chemistry. That being said, he is not the best lecturer but he tries. Go to his office hours, he is very helpful and is always willing to explain concepts. His homework is very similar to his exams and if you get used to the way he asks things you will be fine. Exams are difficult.
Not a good lecturer. Read the book and do the practice exams. The exams are just like the practice. Go to him to get the answers so you know you did it right. Practice sets are okay, but not as helpful as exams. I did not go to any lectures and I still got an A. The average is really low, about 40%. You will need the book!
Morton is very smart; so he expects a lot from his students. Read the book, and do as many practice problems are you can! Find problems online from other schools or watch videos. You don't NEED to go to class, but make sure to go to SI! IT WAS SO HELPFUL. SI was the reason I passed. Overall, this class was difficult, but not impossible if you try!
Morton is hard to understand because he never lectures or answers questions directly; by the time he answers a question, he loses everyone. It's hard to know what to expect for tests because he creates new ones every year. You really have to know the material to understand his wording in lecture and on exams. Go to SI and read the book!
Hardest class of my life. The exams were insanely hard! I can't stress enough how hard the exams were. Get an easy professor and save yourself.
AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS! Professor Morton is just so difficult in every way. His voice is incredibly monotone and low, it takes all of your energy to pay attention to him. His exams were incredibly difficult, even he had issues doing the practice midterms and finals in his review sessions. Doesn't clearly tell you how he is grading.
The professor may look like the man from up, but he is no mr. fredrickson. He is incredibly tough. Class Averages are usually within 30-40%, but fear not, He will most likely issue your class an ultimatum where he would drop both midterms in place of a final; Prepare to go ham, because this might just save you.
