The material was excellently taught, and the guy is hilarious. He makes fun of his wife practically every lecture, and today he was giving out cash to people. Generally just an awesome lecturer. The material in 55 is tough (for me, freshman), but he explains it pretty well. Take his course!
Dr. Nechyba is awesome. His lectures are fairly interesting, and he makes a really hard class worth taking. He's extremely helpful, but everyone fails the first test. If you go to his office hours he gives hw answers and tells a ton of jokes. generous curve, which is nice; makes fun of his wife
funny and pretty good lectures
THE BEST CLASS EVER!!! THE BEST TEACHER EVER!!! I'm so glad I got to take his class this semester!! He's not only a great teacher, but really funny and such a terrific person! He holds review sessions before midterms, and that takes real dedication! =)
Great teacher! Very funny guy.
Great professor, funny, good lectures. Hard exams and long homework assignments.
Nechyba was a great professor. He really makes the material interesting and easy to understand.
Honestly the reason why I became an econ major...he made economics INTERESTING!!! I looked forward to every lecture.
Fantastic teacher, makes a very difficult class manageable. you'll wonder why he's making you learn the basics, but you'll appreciate it later on the final, when everything falls into place. Lectures are really interesting, and he's a generally, all around great guy. One of the best I've had here
All I can say about this guy is that his tests are so effing hard. I didn't really go to class so I guess it's my fault I didn't do so well. Also, his book that he was writing as we went along had errors and made things confusing. He should have finished it before teaching the class.
best prof i have had so far. he is awesome - but it might be find to hard classes he is teaching because he is the head of the department.
great professor. class is hard, but he makes it fun.
Nechyba has been the best prof I've had so far. You learn a lot of interesting economics. He's very funny and talks about his wife a lot. Test averages were, 66,60, and a 55 on final (curved this up to 60). He curves the class to a B avg. Tests are difficult but manageable. He is brilliant and very helpful. Uses the book he wrote.
The most professional teacher i have ever had, made me become an econ major. His Exams are ridiculous but you will really get to know the material. He is funny and entertaining. He was writing the T-book and teaching the class so there were many errors which he admitted later made learning harder, but all in all my favorite professor at duke
suuuch an amazing teacher. hes so knowledgeable! so passionate. hes currently writing his own textbook (which is the "book" we use)...
Nechyba is the only way to enjoy Econ 55. Extremely difficult class, but as the author of the book, he makes it manageable, interesting, and entertaining. One word of advice: don't be fooled by the high curve (B/B+) or his laid back attitude. The tests are impossible (average on final was 49) and the class is filled with brilliant kids.
Hahaha..Dr Nechyba is truly the most awesome professor I've ever had, seriously. He made econs super-interesting and easy, of course!since he knows every single bit of the material!Take his class and prepare to enjoy..I really didn't miss a single class because of HIM.
He's been the Chair of the dept. for like 5 years, and he still takes time to meet with students outside of class, even though he's super busy. He's a great instructor and judging by my grad TAs he's a great Chair too, looking out for what's best for the department and students, not just professors. HE IS THE MAN!
Great prof. Really make you understand the materials in depth. Homeworks and tests are dreadful... pretty low averages.
Calls himself Econ Boy. Sings Barney in class. Makes Dr.Seuss book about econ lesson.
the best professor you will ever have at Duke, he makes even a lecture with 250 people feel personable with all the help he provides for everyone. i mean he wrote the book, he's legit man
He makes his lectures as interesting as they can be, even though it can be hard to concentrate sometimes in such a huge class. Nechyba is extremely knowledgable, and he can clarify things really well outside of class. His tests, however, are really hard, even with the curve.
Professor Nechyba is an excellent lecturer and he makes taking this pretty boring core class quite bearable. His textbook is very successful (even though you shouldn't waste time reading it right before the exam) and he is extremely helpful, very responsive to e-mails. He is the way to go if you want to take 55D.
Funny, smart, and enthusiastic. Makes a large class feel small. Tests are very hard, but you're likely to end up with a decent grade once the curve sets in.
Funny professor. Very helpful. He will always stay for a while after class, and it's a good change to ask questions. Homework is impossible, but really helpful on tests. Advice for good grade is attend all classes (awake), look at slides right after classes and do homework.
Great professor. Extremely smart and funny. He makes big lectures interesting and useful. Tests are hard, but getting a good grade isn't impossible. Answers emails and questions regularly. Very helpful out of class.
Great prof. Made lectures interesting and fun. Had a clever adaptation of the barney theme song reviewing several topics before our exam. Lectures cover the material at the depth required, and the problem sets work you through the nuances to prepare you for his tests (which are fair) and not that hard. Best prof i've had at school by far.
If you are an Econ major, try to take 55 with Nechyba. He explains the material extremely well and you use the textbook that he wrote.
Professor Nechyba is a great professor. He clearly explains tough material and makes lectures fun and interesting. He connects everyone with the material instead of simply reading from the powerpoints. Homework is very difficult and so are the tests but if you go to the lectures and sections, do the homeworks, and use the TAs, you will do fine.
Incredible teacher. Do whatever you can to take a class with Nechyba. His lectures are fantastic and he's a great role model overall.
Great professor! Funny and made the class really interesting and fun. wrote his own textbook, hilarious!
This year was a flipped-format class, so prelectures were posted and a quiz was given at the beginning of the class and counted in final grade. You will learn most of the material well, but not quite deep enough to be able to do his problems. Test questions are always never-before-seen, which made me weary toward the end of the course.
Dr. Nechyba is very helpful outside of class and will always answer your emails if you have questions on the material. He is lenient in terms of grading if he knows you're overwhelmed, so talk to him if you have a very bad schedule and can't get through all the work the class gives you. Tests are very hard. Don't cram and do the hw for practice.
If you're taking Econ 201D, take it with Nechyba. The tests are very hard but fair. The class is curved to a B. Nechyba gives engaging lectures, posts tons of study materials online, and is always willing to answer questions in and out of class. He is a teacher of the highest quality. I have no regrets taking the class
He's amazing! Now that I'm finished with the class, I kind of regret not paying attention to him sometimes in class. If you get behind in class, though, looking at his fantastic powerpoints will be more than enough to catch up. Books are good, but too long; powerpoints will suffice. Tests are hard but previous exams help a lot and the curve is a B+
Wrote consistently difficult problems, but explained the material so well and provided so much material to help that it was very manageable. I probably learned the most in this course out of all I've taken here. Just keep your head up,; you will never feel like you have mastered the material.
Nechyba was an amazing professor. Intermediate microeconomics is generally boring but his class turned me into an econ major. You can screw up big time in the beginning and he will give you chances to come back from it.
Nechyba's an amazing professor but his exams are extremely difficult. However, if you pay attention to him in class and put in some effort, it's not that difficult to get a good grade.
Nechyba is the absolute best! He's SO friendly and helpful and absolutely hilarious! His class is very entertaining and he makes the subject matter easy to understand - especially since he wrote the textbook. His powerpoints and prelectures are very useful when studying. Midterm averages are low (60s) but the tests aren't too hard. He's wonderful
Cemented my interest in Economics. The man literally wrote the book on Econ 201. Quite literally one of the most amazing professors I've ever known. Any university and student would be lucky to have him.
Nechyba is a boss. The tests are hard but the curve is massive so you end up doing well. Very funny in class. You do not need to go to class at all.
Tough class no way around it, but Nechyba is tha man. Great teacher, good at explaining.
Great professor with obvious experience and knowledge. Connects with students and enjoys teaching.
He's an awesome lecturer, although the course is difficult. If you want to do well, you need to put the work in, plain and simple. But Nechyba is funny, interesting, and absolutely brilliant.
Extremely intelligent, funny, and really tries to make the material more interesting and relatable to students. Very accessible if you reach out for help and is very personable and knowledgable about the subject and how best to teach it. Fantastic professor.
The modern-day Dr. Seuss of Economics. His lectures are super engaging, but it's a bit difficult to ask questions in class. TA's are great, though.
Excellent professor, super helpful. Wants the kids to do well. Hard tests!
Professor Nechyba is brilliant and is an amazing professor. Explains concepts clearly and is very helpful. Class was tough, but if you do the work you will do fine.
Could be the best professor I have had at Duke. Professor Nechyba is an AMAZING teacher and person, and I would highly recommend taking a course with him. Class will be pretty difficult, but it is much worth it as you will learn a ton of information. He is willing to help as much as possible outside of class.
Nechyba is the best Econ teacher I've ever had. His lectures are very engaging and quite funny. He wrote the Econ 201 textbook, and that speaks volumes about how knowledgeable he is. Tests are tough, but put in effort and let the curve do the rest. If you ever consider taking Econ 201, take it with Nechyba! He is boss.
Nechyba is the best. There's no way around it. While the material itself is hard, Nechyba is a great lecturer, and he explains everything well. You're going to have to put work in for this class, but it is definitely not impossible to do well. If you work hard, attend lecture, and do homework, you have a great chance of doing well in this class.
Econ 201 is a hard class in general, but Nechyba's lectures were entertaining and he cares a lot about students doing well. Fair overall, and if you're going to take 201 then take it from Nechyba.
Nechyba is just phenomenal. Incredible at explaining concepts and giving relevant examples. His tests will uncover the true extent to which you have understood the material, but the class is curved to a BB+ so most people end up with a decent grade. He puts great effort into this class so you just want to work hard too. Take 201 with him.
Very good professor, clear lectures based on book he wrote. Can skip class and get A, as textbook is written by him and extremely useful. Clearly wants to help student. Lectures can be entertaining with jokes, songs (look out for Barney song), and more jokes. Was wrongly criticised on Yikyak for harsh grade distribution (totally untrue!)
Best professor I have ever had at Duke!
He is one of the best professors I've ever had.
Nechyba is extremely passionate and actually enjoys teaching. He's department chair so he's not very accessible out of class but the TA office hours and review sessions that he holds are pretty helpful. Mid-semester he hands the class off to an assistant professor but is still there for all the lectures. Generally this prof isn't as good as Nechyba
Very tough class and material but Professor Nechyba did a great job of explaining it during lectures. He is always on top of grading and gives plenty of resources for the exams. The midterms and final are all really difficult with the average grade being lower than 65. But the class is curved to a B/B+ and there is a very flexible grading policy.
Arguably the best Econ professor at Duke, he knows the material better than anyone else (wrote the textbook) so his lectures are very clear and organized. Workload consists of a problem set a week. His tests are difficult, you have to work hard and study a lot to earn a good grade. But in the end, most students usually do well (B/B+ average).
Great Lecturer, turning grades back in a timely manner
Nechyba is a brilliant professor and he knows his Economics. Beware though: the material builds up rapidly, and if you are lazy, you will not survive in this class. It's a tough class, but if you put effort into it, you will do fine. Also, get maximum prepared for every exam, because your whole grade depends on two midterms and a final.
Nechyba is a great lecturer, explains things clearly and has a good sense of humor. Since he wrote the textbook you don't really need to read it in addition because everything is covered in the lectures. Grading is very fair and he is very transparent about the grading system.
Funny and nice teacher, but lectures can often be a bit confusing, so it's helpful to read the textbook if needed. Exams are really difficult and frustrating, make sure to go see TA's and ask questions.
Smart as hell, nice and funny. Tests are basically the only thing that decide your grade, so make sure you study for those. The class isn't easy and the material builds, but Nechyba is simply great at explaining tough concepts and makes himself very available before exams to help everyone out.
Great professor who truly cares about the material and student success. I never attended class as the in-class quizzes could be completed from anywhere. The book is a great resource for getting an in-depth understanding of the material. Exams are fairly difficult, but predictable if you review past exams. Material builds quickly.
Phenomenal professor who is passionate about economics and makes each lecture entertaining. He also wrote the textbook, which is very well written and becomes a valuable resource for mastering the material. The class is fast paced and tests are definitely hard, but there is a fairly lenient grading policy in place.
Nechyba is an amazing dude. He's really entertaining in lectures and really cares about teaching his students the material (he did write the textbook). Tests are extremely tough and make up almost all your grade but it's graded on a curve. It's a hard class but as long as you put in hard work it's manageable
Great prof do well on your final and you're good
This class was the hardest class I have taken so far. The lectures are very dense and the material is hard to understand. Nechyba is great/well versed on this topic, but his lectures/textbook tend to be unnecessarily wordy. Definitely recommend hitting up office hours (with Chelsea- she taught the class this spring) and spending time on the info
great lectuere, probably one of the best. help is really accessible outside of class with TAs, discussions, office hours, etc. doing the homework is really important to do well in the class. attendance definitely helps but isn't mandatory. with that being said, the midterms and final is very hard. taking this course in spring is probably easier
Nechyba is a very knowledgable professor who loves to teach. Holds extra review sessions even on Sundays before the tests. The class itself is very rigorous and the lectures tend to be very dry at some points. The textbook comes in handy a lot of times. His tests are insanely tough but I'd recommend taking the class with him only.
Prof Nechyba gives great and personable lectures. He's super smart - he wrote the textbook - and really tries to help his students out with review sessions before midterms. The class is really difficult and material builds fast, so avoid falling behind by going to TA sections. Your grade is essentially only test grades (though curved to a B+).
Nechyba wrote the textbook and it shows when he is doing lecture. You can easily fall behind in this class so having a solid study group and participation in discussion sections are very highly recommended. The class is curved to a B+ but the class also has very driven people so make sure you're one of them so you don't end up behind the pack.
I am taking his class during covid, so 2/3 lectures are over Zoom. This dude is so petty he refuses to give us access to the recorded lectures because he wants us to treat the class like "normal." Basically, he refuses to accomodate people in the times of covid and he makes us take exams IN PERSON. 174 students packed in one room. Great idea.
I regret taking this class so much. Nechyba is unapproachable and not very nice. He explains concepts very badly and makes it difficult to understand concepts that should be easy. This class is so stressful for no reason.
This class is difficult, not interesting, and the professor is often condescending when you ask questions. Attendance is mandatory, even though classes are online. Lecture recordings are not posted, which just makes things harder for us. This sucks because it is so hard to pay attention because Nechyba is so boring.
Best Professor ever, he is so dedicated and his office hours are so helpful!!!
Professor Nechyba is hands down the most amazing professor I've had at Duke so far. While the material for this class is not easy, he explains the concepts really well, and not to mention is very entertaining. I really appreciated his office hours before exams. Overall, he makes you work for it but it's 100% worth it!
I understand where the 1 star reviews are coming from--Nechyba might seem unapproachable because he's very dead-pan + has a dry sense of humor. However, I personally find him extremely willing to help--the week before every exam, he hosts probably about 10 hours of help sessions. He's also very understanding--he's posted lectures before on request.
Full disclosure, this is part 2 of the last review. I also think he gives really good explanations, and he's really patient with them too. The material is objectively difficult, so being confused isn't necessarily a reflection of his teaching ability. In any case, fantastic prof. I don't think the lower reviews do him justice.
Love the dude! Nechyba is so helpful outside of class and you know what to expect on the midterms. The material is hard, but good old persistency does the trick. Heads up that the content begins easy-ish, then spikes in difficulty, and then becomes more manageable. Also, gotta appreciate him giving a fall break when we're on a condensed semester!
This guy is incredible. Tests were difficult but Nechyba is one of the best professor's that I have ever had.
Before starting this class I heard a lot of comments from seniors about the difficulty of this class, but with the amount of support Dr Nechyba offers (love those pre-exam office hours) it becomes almost trivial to achieve a good grade. I wouldn't recommend taking ECON 201 with any other professors. He's also a great person outside of class. 11/10.
Nechyba is a King. THE greatest Econ professor I've ever seen. He's funny, helpful, nice, lenient, and knows the material like the back of his hand; he literally wrote the textbook, is constantly rewriting it and his lectures to better teach students, and can use real world examples and clear language to teach you what you need to know.
Dr. Nechyba is the best professor I've had at Duke so far. Going to his lectures is always a joy, and his lectures make the material very accessible. He is always very good at answering questions. Just make sure to go to lecture and keep up with the homework.
Professor Nechyba is a fantastic professor who excels at what he does. He is incredibly knowledgeable on the topic, and explains it in plain language to make it more understandable. Very accessible outside of class, takes a lot of time out of his busy day to ensure he addresses all questions in office hours. Other professors... take notes.
Take Econ201 with Nechyba! Econ201 was hard, but Nechyba used plain language to make the material understandable. Go to pre-exam office hours and do the past exams! They are the most helpful to prepare for exams. Nechyba would hold hrs of review sessions before every exam to ensure everyone learned the material. Lenient curve w/ an optional final.
Clear lectures and nice guy. Over the summer, was lenient on grading. Pretty easy to pass.
This man gives us quizzes to do with questions that we have never learned how to solve. It makes no sense.
Gives quizzes before each class with many mistakes and questions that he never taught us how to solve. Really frustrating and time consuming.
Makes the class much more difficult than it needs to be. Explanations of concepts are simple and easy to understand in the lectures and videos but quizzes and problem sets are extremely difficult and uncessarily time consuming. So much busy work and not a fun or interesting class.
Incredibly unfair ratings on here. Outstanding lecturer and teacher who describes complex content very clearly. It is a hard class and you will have to work a lot outside of class, but he is a uniquely open available teacher. Outstanding teacher-one of the bet I have had at Duke.
Professor Nechyba is really nice!!! but this course is so hard and confusing with an insane amount of work outside of class.
The class is a lot of work but he is so cute and wholesome. If you need to take econ 201 take it with him
he sends out a ton of emails everyday which makes it super confusing and also the class in general is so extremely hard. i genuinely think that this is one of the hardest classes at duke. but he is so nice and wholesome
I really like Professor Nechyba as a person. But this course is so difficult and confusing. It is like a full time job :(
I really like professor nechyba! econ 201 is hard by nature, but he does his best to prepare you to do well. he actually wants you to succeed and gives you clear ways of doing so. he's really nice and engaging. it's not his fault 201 is hard, and i think he's great at explaining difficult concepts!
Nechyba is so nice and tries so hard. Provides tons of office hours, old exams, genuinely wants you to succeed and gives you the tools to do so. Yes, the class is hard by nature, but some of the reviews on here are plain unfair. Also, his textbook is genuinely helpful and straightforward if you need it and follows the material nicely.
Love this man and his red pants. People say he gives too much work but it’s not bad if you have a work ethic. Super supportive throughout the semester and actually cares if we learn.
Only haters leave bad reviews: this guy is a god and every student should be required to take one of his classes. Legitimately funny, never seen a guy care more about his students, and so chill. Yea it's a hard class: get over it it's not his fault. Lectures are amazing
So nice, very funny. Genuinely wants you to learn and succeed.
Really frustrating class. If you don't want to waste 10+ hours every week just take the class with another professor.
I have no clue how this guy is a 4.9. He's a nice guy and all but he resorts to pre-class videos to deliver most of the content and has quizzes that literally take forever to complete which are riddled with bugs and glitches. Completely put me off the econ department at Duke.
If you watch the videos, show up to class and put in a modicum of effort, you will succeed. The lectures are clear and effective, as well as often including funny bits. He cares about his students but holds them to high ethical standards. He strives to stay aware of student desires and modify his class to help them succeed.
Ignore the immature bad reviews... Nechyba is a GOAT! Top-tier Duke professor and ECON professor. No matter your professor, Econ 201 will be a hard class, so might as take it with one of the most caring and nice professors at Duke (especially considering the class' lecture size). The way he teaches and helps students understand is unparalleled!!
Nechyba is the best teacher ever. He is funny, keeps lectures interesting and makes the course very fair. He is also really funny and cares so deeply about all his students. His class has always been my favorite.
Nechyba is the best! Such a great teacher and an amazing person! He really cares about each of his students and gives you all the materials and resources you need to get an A.
Professor Nechyba is an amazing professor and human being who provides tons of help out of class. The textbook homework tends to be extremely difficult, but the modules/quizzes are easy enough if you spend some time on them. I personally had a hard time focusing in lectures, but if you're an Econ major, I can't recommend Prof. Nechyba enough.
He's amazing! He's crystal clear at explaining, very patient, and genuinely wants students to learn the course materials well. He uses examples that relate to the real world. The class can be hard, but if you do all homework, do corrections, practice past year papers and attend the final study group sessions, you'll likely ace this class.
Really kind and understanding guy. The class is tough but he does everything he can to make it manageable. Homework can be pretty dense but midterms stick to the basics. Study for the midterms and you'll be fine because they make or break your grade
Genuinely the best, best professor I've had at Duke so far. 201 is by nature a hard class, but Prof. Nechyba is just so caring and kind. As long as you keep up with the work, do the past exams and go to the review sessions, you'll be fine.
Take Econ 101 with Nechyba. He is an outstanding professor and person. One of the greatest at Duke.
Professor Nechyba is always willing to make accommodations for students and give them the facilities they need to succeed. The material is difficult however the exams are very similar to what he teaches so there are few surprises, and the curves are generous. The class is definitely, however, in the end, a lot of people do well.
I didn't go to class or try particularly hard to understand the material, so I'm happy with the grade. The class is tough, but Nechyba goes above and beyond to help your grade. He gave extra credit opportunities and hosted review sessions on Zoom before the midterms and final. If you have to take the class, I can't imagine a better professor.
Econ201 is a difficult course by nature, and while I found the content to be boring/difficult, Nechyba was an AMAZING professor. There is a lot of homework, and I found lectures to not be super useful, but I really appreciated how compassionate Nechyba was. You could tell that he really cares about students and is very passionate about econ.
Best Professor I have had so far! Very student- centred, and focuses a lot on being of use and help to students.
Genuine person really cares about the content
Professor Nechyba is a super engaging lecturer and makes lectures interesting. Since ECON 101 is pass/fail, it can be hard to pay attention sometimes, but try your best to listen during lectures and learn something. I would recommend taking ECON 101 with him since his class has a much lighter workload and no exams and is less stressful overall.
I love this man with all my heart. You could not ask for a better professor. A lot of criticisms are of Econ201 and not Nechyba himself, and that makes sense. Econ 201 is a hard class, but he makes it so much better. He is funny, approachable and genuinely caring. He also wrote the textbook and is a true expert. Power combo!!! LOVE HIM
Homework graded by completion. Clear and easy to follow lecturer. Passionate. Occasionally funny. Straightforward exams. You'll get out of the class what you put in.
Best Professor Period
Take this class if you have the chance. Nechyba is an incredibly caring and inspiring professor who is governed by strong values. Sometimes there is a lot of work outside class, but there is a clear course set for you to succeed. Whether it is through an interesting connection or a funny remark, every lecture I attended added something to my day.
Econ 201 is a hard class, but it's been one of my favorite classes at Duke. Nechyba sets up the class in a way that rewards growth, so you have opportunities to improve throughout the semester. He's an incredible lecturer and prof. This class was challenging but also had stimulating content, and it made me look at the world differently. 10/10!
I love Professor Nechyba with all my heart. He has made my Duke experience really special. Despite this being a huge core class, he somehow managed to feel each and every one of us cared for. He was extremely responsive to any questions, and was even vulnerable at times in class. I really admire and appreciate him and all his efforts for us.
Loved him! - Lectures in class were ok? They would be engaging if you didn't know the material, but you learn it all through the homework so they serve mostly as review. - He was accessible outside class and the head TA was always willing to give extensions - He breaks down complex concepts, giving the intuition behind them.
Econ 201 is a difficult class due to the material alone, but Professor Nechyba made the class way easier. Extremely knowledgeable on the course, very easy to reach out of class, and grades fairly. You'll spend a good amount of time on homework and reviewing around exam time, but he wants you to succeed and you will if you work hard.
ECON 201 is a challenging class with a lot of difficult material covered. Professor Nechyba does an amazing job simplifying the material and using funny and relatable examples in class. He is also really caring and very responsive to emails and questions. I would recommend taking his classes and FLUNCHing him. He wants all his students to succeed.
This class was SO good. I learned so much and felt very engaged with the content. Prof. Nechyba breaks the content down in a manageable way, and is incredibly caring and knowledgeable. Grading is very fair. I learned tons about the applications of economics to policy and other disciplines, as well as fundamental theory. 10/10.
Econ201 is a difficult class but Prof. Nechyba is great and truly cares about his students
Nechyba has the reputation as the best Econ Professor at Duke and he has earned it. He genuinely cares about all of his students, makes himself available to answer questions, and takes feedback seriously, often changing policies and the schedule when necessary. The content can be hard but he makes an effort to make sure you can succeed.
Professor Nechyba is truly amazing. It is obvious how passionate he is about the content he teaches and he truly cares about his students, extremely accessible outside of class. 201 is a lot of work, so definitely beware, and the midterms and final are very difficult. But 201 is a hard class by nature, not Nechyba. DO NOT TAKE WITH ANYONE ELSE.
Nechyba is one of the best teachers I've had in my life. Never before have I laughed so much in a lecture. He's excellent with explaining concepts and making economics fun and interesting. His flipped classroom style is great, with videos and quizzes that help you learn and boost your grade. He is extremely understanding and great with extensions.
Looks like the Terminator. Sounds like the Terminator. Excellent Econ teacher.
Nechyba is a great professor. He really cares about his students and goes above and beyond to help us. Although the course content was pretty tough and often times unexciting, he helped us get through it.
Econ 101 with him is great. It's a lot of content but it's super easy to pass (only available pass/fail) and you don't have to take the final if you just go to class and do the pre-class work. He's just genuinely an awesome teacher and person and you can tell he really wants everyone to do well. Love him, def take his class.
Nechyba is the best it gets in Econ. He structures his class to inspire kids to pursue Econ, and wants everyone to pass the class. The quizzes are tough and can be frustrating, but working through them helps you learn the material. Awesome teacher.
DO NOT SLEEP ON THE EXTRA CREDIT-- IT CAN BE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TAKING THE FINAL OR NOT. Do the extra credit (all of it) even if you think you will pass without it. NOT WORTH THE RISK.
Nechyba is the GOAT. All of us love Nechyba. All praise the man of ECON. The leader, the legend. The second-coming of Arnold. He is a man always with a plan. A man of inspiration and motivation. A man who puts his students first. He is well-rehearsed.
He's him. It;s a good class.
Best professor I ever had.
great professor
Great professor. Econ 101 is a pass-fail class, and the way he does it, there are no tests, just quizzes that you can take online. It's an extremely low-stress class because it's nearly impossible to fail, and the workload is light as well. Great class for those unsure if they want to go into econ.
He's an amazing engaging lecturer and really explains concepts well. The homework is very manageable and discussion sections were great if you had questions. Perfect class for an intro to econ!
Super easy class. Nechyba is a G.
Professor Nechyba is fantastic at teaching the information of his course and it was evident that he wanted all students to do well. This was a pass/fail course, and he really did everything he could to ensure that everyone passed. His lectures are engaging and he provided a great baseline for economics without too much stress!
Great intro to econ. Lectures were engaging, Professor Nechyba is hilarious. He admits when he makes mistakes and is always there to help students. Unlimited attempts on the quizzes so class is easy to pass. Videos he posted aided my learning a lot. A little time consuming, but would take again without hesitation!
Professor Nechyba is amazing and he makes the class so much easier. It is a great way to be introduced to economics because it shows you everything that it can be used for beyond finance. He brings in a lot of speakers who have great advice about careers in economics. He likes to cancel class on Fridays a lot and usually finishes early.
Lectures were not interesting and I found his explanations unhelpful. Honestly made me less interested in economics and questioning whether I should take more classes in the subject.
It's honestly a shame that people graduate from duke without taking at least one class with Nechyba. He is the Econ god and he loves his students very much and does everything to make the content easier for students. I don't think there's anyone that can teach an intro to Econ as good as he did.
Nechyba is great and does a good job at trying to make students care about what is being taught. He's super cool and very knowledgable, so I highly recommend you flunch him.
I love Nechyba. I did not like the 201 material at all but he made the class tolerable and clearly cares so much about his students. In a giant lecture, it's easy to feel like the professor is being forced to be there, but I never felt like that with him. If I had to take this class with anyone but him, I would've dropped.
The homework is optional and is extremely lengthy, I suggest you don't do it as long as you are able to do the modules well and understand the material. There is a lot of content so I suggest doing the practice exams before each midterm. Nice guy overall.
Nechyba is the goat. Had him for Econ 101 Fall 23. Class is P/F and has clear grading criteria. If you do all the homework quizzes between classes and attend classes, you won't need to take the final and there are no midterms. Class can get boring due to content, but Nechyba is a funny and personable lecturer. Would 100% reccomend.
Make this man the head of the Econ Department. Reasonable and flexible. He helps struggling students, especially towards the finals. Great at explaining econ concepts. Exams are also well-written, and grading criteria is clear. Minor con: the homework was vague, unnecessarily hard at times and didn't help with the exams.
Professor Nechyba is the BEST PROFESSOR EVER! Econ 201 itself is a little boring at times and the homework was always lengthy and complicated, but Professor Nechyba made this core class so much more manageable. He gives extra credit, extends deadlines, and is so accessible outside of class. I also took Econ 101 with him and loved his lectures!!
Professor Nechyba is by far and away one of the best professors as Duke. Though I have decided not to continue on the econ major path, having taken econ 101 and 201 with him were amazing! He is an incredible teacher - he cares deeply about the subject matter he teaches but also about his students. He is always available and willing to help!
THE GOAT.
Absolute GOAT. Take Econ 201 with Nechyba if you have the chance. He presents the material very well and really cares about his students doing well.
Such an amazing professor. Honestly cares about his students and sets up the class in a way that it is very possible to come back from a bad grade. Do his modules (and actually understand them) and do the bootcamps for the final. The homework is hard and doesn't matter so don't focus on it.
Nechyba is a really cool guy. Goes out of his way to answer questions for students and host extra office hours/zooms to provide assistance. This was an extremely challenging class, but I learned a lot and it shaped my way of thinking about the world and economics. Him allowing you to drop one of your midterms is really nice as well!
My favorite professor at Duke thus far. Super nice and cares so much about his students. He genuinely wants you to succeed and he spends time outside of lectures and homework to help. Do his modules and understand them. Don't stress over the homework problem sets, and 100% go to his bootcamp review sessions in the last month of the class.
Professor Nechyba is one of my favorite professors I've had at Duke.
Nechyba is the GOAT of the Econ department. Took 101 with him last spring and waited a year just to take 201 with him! Really cares about his students, and gives us all the resources we need to succeed in the class. Exams are fair but require studying, but his flip-classroom approach really helps you prepare and understand the content.
If you put in effort with Nechyba, you will succeed. By far the best professor to take 201 with. If you have the opportunity to Flunch him, do it! He is such an interesting person who genuinely cares about creating an environment for learning and exploration.
HES THE BEST. TAKE HIS CLASSES
Nechyba is a fantastic professor who genuinely cares about his students. His lectures are engaging, and he's always willing to provide extra help. Use Unstuck AI along with the textbook to ace this course.
He's the best! Just bought us 500 donuts 🍩
Nebycha is the goat of econ, dont taken econ101 with anyone except him. the only problem with the s/u grading system is that you could absolutely study nothing in the class and get through it by having other do your quizzes, you just have to show up to get the Satisfactory, the exam is only compulsory if you don't get 70/75 points(very easy to get)
Sitting in a Nechyba lecture is like watching LeBron James play basketball. He is so skilled he makes it look easy. In all seriousness, Nechyba does a great job of making economics accessible from all disciplines. You don't have to be an econ major to take this class or be interested as he applies everything to the real world. A real class act.
I really like Nechyba as a person and I think his lectures are engaging and interesting at times, especially with guest speakers.
The sweetest professor ever! His lectures are super engaging, guest speakers are really interesting, and really cares about his students. Not a difficult class at all.
Mandatory S/U so of course the class will be easy. The mandatory attendance is very annoying and he gets annoyed with the lack of respect as a result of easy ways to get around skipping class. Quizzes with unlimited attempts before every class. Lectures are boring if you have any sort of background with economics coursework in high school.
Professor Nechyba is amazing. Make sure to take Econ 101 in the fall so you get him as your professor. He is extremely caring, knowledgeable, and funny. The class is very easy, you are graded mostly on attendance. Would highly recommend taking Professor Nechyba to FLUNCH!
NECHYBA=GOAT. Honestly, he is too nice of a guy, if you put in solid effort, you will pass the class, but he honestly just wants everyone to have a good experience with econ and learn what he teaches. Lectures can be boring and confusing if you do not keep up with the work, and the quizzes can be frustrating but overall, good class.
He was really the best
Nechyba is a very sweet, caring guy; just a truly nice person. His lectures at times are really engaging, and at times less so, since it's 75 mins x 3/week. Passing is genuinely easy if you show up to class and give some effort on quizzes (which can be tricky). Pay attention once in a while, because you might get something great out of it.
Nice professor. Lots of homework outside of class. No one pays attention during class, so it will be hard for you to pay attention as well.
Professor Nechyba is an amazing person who genuinely cares for his students. Lectures can very easily become extremely boring, but at times highly engaging. He plays ABBA for the class every morning. It is not hard to pass this class, but SHOW UP TO LECTURE. Do modules assigned after each lecture, as this is the majority of your grade.
Took this as a Duke bucket list thing, but my experience was average. Nechyba gives great lectures, but the content was disorganized so limited takeaways. Topics were too easy and not intellectually stimulating. Grading by 33 Canvas quizzes was annnoying, excruciating. Mandatory attendance, but too many don't pay attention or even game the system.
What a class. What a teacher. What a man. Would recommend to everyone.
The undisputed GOAT.
There is a God. And his name is Thomas Nechyba. Protect him.
Great professor. super engaging.
I didn't fully appreciate Professor Nechyba's gift for teaching until I had other professors later on. He presents more challenging material in a way that's far easier to grasp. His pre-class modules are unmatched in their quality, and his lectures are incredibly engaging—my only regret is not attending more of them.
Super engaging lectures - he's great at getting people of many backgrounds excited about economics. However, the class is so ridiculously easy that anyone who nerds out about the material isn't going to be very stimulated. Class runs on a flipped classroom model with mandatory attendance, but the lectures and homework videos get samey.
The GOAT of Econ, gets you interested in the field and wants everyone to succeed. Pretty easy class, but requires some time outside of class to watch the videos and do the 3x a week quizzes. Genuinely entertaining.
Yo if you get this guy you're set Funny and great teaching, but most of all genuinely cares about his students
Genuinely the GOAT of econ at Duke. Nechyba cares about his students a lot and is a really funny guy who makes class engaging. Econ 101 is pass-fail, and everything is just take-home online quizzes, so it's literally impossible to fail the class unless you are lazy. Go to lecture as he sometimes does manual attendance, but he's an amazing lecturer.
Nechyba is the best!! Highly recommend taking Econ 101 - the best class and the most amazing professor. He cares so much about what he is teaching and the class is pass/fail so you can focus more on the material rather than the grade. Class is rather easy to pass (just doing quizzes every night) and lectures are engaging (tech free though).
Such a genuine, caring person. You will get out of this class what you put in. Plenty choose to go the easy route but if you pay attention and try to actively learn the material, it's a strong intro to econ.
Like many others have said, Nechyba is the ECON goat. If you pay attention in lectures and outside of class assignments, you have lots to gain from this intro class. It's a pass/fail class, and you'll have to actively try to fail. Very easy course from a special professor.
