Good teacher. Don't miss class or you will see it on your test grade.
Outstanding teacher, exlremely willing to help out, very, very hard class, STUDY
Excellent teacher. Works hard to help students understand!
Wish I could take him with me!!
I did NOT understand chem at all until I took him. very good prof- makes it fun
Great Prof. - don't miss any classes!
The best Chemstry professor I have ever had!!
Smart prfessor that knows what he is talking about. Very helpful, makes chem fun
excellent teacher. Knows what he is teaching, and trying to make chemistry fun!
Lots of cool demos and loved to teach chemistry
He has given me a very clear understanding of general chemistry and appriciates comments and questions during lectures. I'm going into a nuclear science because of his intro to nuclear chem in Chem 114.
He is a good teacher but has never done 101 and is kinda ahead of us but he is very good at making us understand.
If chemistry is hard for you, definately seek extra help. It is sometimes difficult to retain everything you need to know from Neils. But he is a wonderful person, a dedicated teacher, and will bend over backwards for any student that asks for help.
Best Chem teacher ever!
Very good teacher! The best chem teacher that I've ever had. He is always willing to help. He tries his best to make the subject understandable. If you go to class and study, you should get a good grade. His tests aren't too hard either! Wonderful teacher
You can tell he really loves chemistry. He makes class fun and interesting. Love him! I wish every teacher taught like him!
Dr. Neils is a total science geek, which makes him have a great sense of humour. It seems to me that he'd rather be teaching a higher level CM class, but he's always willing to explain things and does a very good job with it. Loved him.
Great guy. really knows what he's talking about. challenging sometimes, but not in a mean way, he just wants to make sure everybody really knows the material. Makes class enjoyable. I recommend him to everyone i know.

I never took chemistry before this, Dr. Neils made it interesting and not so intimidating! I would recommend him! He's a science geek and proud of it! He also really knows his stuff!
He will make you like Chemistry
he is really good at what he does and makes sure you understand everything. he always answers questions no matter how dumb they sound and he gives a lot of real life experience to help you relate it.
Best teacher i have ever had. Makes class interesting! Makes lecture packet for each student, so concentration is put on learning and not taking notes. Loves what he does. Very funny! If you come to class, study, and ask questions you will do well. I wish he taught all my classes
Very helpful and is energetic. He is a very thoughtful person and cares about his students
He is a fun teacher that knows how to make the class fun.
He's an amazing teacher, he made me love chemisty! He does many demos in the class and makes it fun, he's always there to help! Take him if you get a chance!!!! He makes it as easy as it can get for chemistry!
Very nice, makes chemistry understandable. He was very helpful teacher.
Challenging prof who makes class interesting and the subject easier to understand. Hard, but fair and does great chemistry experiments. Study the outlines and take notes and you will do well in this class.
He is extremely enerjetic about life and this class. He will go out of his way to explain something to you. Awesome professor highly recommended!
Took 109 after already having a B.A. from MSU. I have had many professors. He is by far one of the best professors I have ever had, if not the best. One of the only professors that is dedicated to having class be fun and a great learning experiece. Chem. is never easy, but I actually looked forward to class.
He was a great professor. He answers any topic question until the idea is clear (even if people ask the same thing over and over). Tells great real life stories. Works with you to understand Chemistry.
The most clear and helpful prof that I hav ever had.
Definately the most helpful, energetic prof. I've had yet. Very dedicated to students, very patient, and extremely excited about his job.
Prof. Neils definitly loves his job, energetic teaching style and does a great job of explaining why things do what they do at a level that makes sense. Pay attention and follow the lecture guide to do well. Even if you don't like chemistry you will not hate going to class because it's always interesting with Neils teaching.
Prof. Neils was the most helpful prof I've ever had! Although Chemistry is never easy, he made me want to learn and he was there WHENEVER i needed him. Laugh all you want but I had a small crush on the guy ;). I definitely suggest him, he'll help you with one of the hardest subjects you'll ever deal with!
I got a C in chemistry in high school, but I'm getting an A in his class. He's really easy to understand and really takes things step-by-step. The most helpful science teacher I've ever had.
Professor Neils is the best. He really wants you to understand Chemistry because it's all around you. He loves what he does, and it really shows. He is willing to sit down with you in office hours and help you if you need it. Feel free to ask questions! If you want to understand what you are trying to learn, take Chem with him!!!
Dr. Neils is one of the best professors I've ever had -- and I'm a second degree student, so I've had a lot of them. He's passionate about the subject, approachable, and funny. I'm not great at math and science, but Dr. Neils always found a way to help me understand the subject.
One of the most intelligent professors I've ever had. Very organized, clear, and helpful. I really learned something from him.
I hated this class. If you are like me and have a hard time understanding chemistry unless they take it step by step and not go so fast...dont take this class..he flys by so fast and assumes we get it..I hated this class because I bought the book and we never used it. He assumes we all want to be Chemists and that we love chemistry..
If you want a great professor that keeps chemistry very interesting- take him! He is one of the best prof's I have ever had! Study and you will do fine on tests! He makes chemistry actually enjoyable!
If you want a great professor that keeps chemistry very interesting- take him! He is one of the best prof's I have ever had! Study and you will do fine on tests! He makes chemistry actually enjoyable!
He is a great prof who really cares about chemistry and it shows. He wants you to learn and will do anything to help you out
very helpful
Great teacher! You can tell her loves what he does and that helps. Just show up and study your notes and you'll do just fine:)
GREAT TEACHER...he really knows his stuff..He made it really fun with his stories and experiments. Just study study study his test are nothing like what he puts on the reviews or past tests. If you have a question he is more than willing to help. Overall a great teacher!!!
awesome teacher
I loved this professor! He is very helpful, but he makes you think and won't just give you the answer which is nice, but sometimes frustrating. He cracks jokes and does experiments in class, very interesting! As long as you show him RESPECT you'll be fine, he is very helpful during office hours also!
Great Teacher.
He helped me learn a lot
Dr. Neils is great! Some aspects of inorganic chem were a little challenging(the math), but he made the class enjoyable. He is funny, very helpful, patient, welcomes questions. He guides you in figuring out the answer, instead of just giving it to you, which makes him a good instructor. He did interesting experiments in class, too.
Probably the best teacher I've ever had. His enthusiasm for the topic is amazing -- you can tell this guy just LOVES Chemistry. I found him easy to understand and extremely helpful, and really knows his stuff.
dr.neils is great profesor, ready to help although go fast in teaching and somethings assumes student know them, he is very reasonable and not hard on student. he is a scientist probably his family too. just study his test, review sheet and note what he teaches and you will pass. i recommend him
Dr. Neils is a great Prof. He does teach at a fast pace, so I recommend attending EVERY class. He is enthusiastic and may go off on a tangent, but it's usually an interesting one. He is energetic and you can tell he loves science and being teacher.
Dr. Neils is very clear as to what is expected of his students and he is always there if we have questions. He is one of the best professors I've ever had.
He is a really hard teacher you really need to study all test are essay questions no multiple choices. good luck!!!
Dr.Neils is hands down the best teacher I have ever had. Class is interesting, moves at a good pace, and well planned. He is extremely organized and quick with grading, which I really appreciated. I seriously do NOT understand how anyone could give him a negative review. He is so smart and so nice. If you pay attention and study you'll get an A
I have Dr. Neils for Lab only. He is funny, interesting, and fair. Labs fit very well with lecture. He treats students with great respect and posts grades promptly. I hope I can take a lecture with him, as he makes things so clear. My background is English, but he has made Chemistry very enjoyable!
I loved Dr. Neils! He was fun, helpful, clear, and very intelligent.
Excellent professor. This guy is one of the best instructors I have ever had. He is an asset to GRCC and I would take one of his classes again in a heartbeat. Very intelligent, knowledgeable, and willing to help you understand.
Only had him for lab but he is amazing! Definitely my favorite teacher. He is funny, explains things clearly, respects others, and is always walking around to see how we're doing. Lab reports were hard at first but once you figure out what he is looking for it's cake. I would take his class again in a heartbeat. I highly recommend him!
Took his honors class. Great professor, very good at explaining complicated material. His classes are a lot of work but his teaching skill makes it all seem very manageable. Its by no means an easy A but with his attitude and skill there is no excuse for a poor grade.
Great professor! One of the best I have ever had. He makes things very interesting and is interested in what you are using chemistry for. At the beginning of the class he asks you fill out a sheet so that he can learn more about you and then talks about the subjects you are interested in throughout the course. I highly recommend taking his courses!
I never really cared for chemistry, but he makes it VERY interesting and easy to understand. I'm currently finishing my first year of college and he is definitely the best professor I've had so far.
Dr. Neils makes learning fun! I don't love chemistry, but I eagerly anticipate his class each week. He is tough, but very fair and treats students with respect. His wife is a chem professor and it's a good thing because she probably is more understanding about his mistress, chemistry. He is passionate about it, which makes him a great teacher.
He is probably the best professor that i have had in the 4 years of part time at GRCC. I can't stress enough how helpful he was for me and how understanding he was for my issues. He knows his stuff and is a classic fun guy and would tell all sorts of chemistry related stories of his life and why things work the way they do. very informative class!!
I needed to take one year of first-year chemistry before taking organic chemistry, both of which were required for my biology major. I found myself enjoying chemistry thanks to Dr. Neils. I now have three college degrees, and out of all of the courses I've taken over the years with all of the professors, Dr. Neils is in the top 3!
Textbook sucked. Would not help me through personal problem hindering success. Some of his lectures were very good, and others were difficult to follow because he kept going off on tangents unrelated to what we needed to know for the class or for science, yet he didn't always cover everything in as much detail each class as would be optimal.
If you don't like chemistry, Professor Neils will keep you interested...I promise. He will answer any question that might pop into your head while actually caring about teaching you the right things. Just put in your time to the class, show up, turn in your work on time and you will do well. He is fair and reasonable. He is pretty much the best.
Excellent professor!!! He gives notepacks, which really helped me keep up with class. However, don't come to his class unless you are willing to work really hard for an A! To explain how good he is, one of his students came up with a saying: "In CHM 130, there are two types of students. Those who HAVE Dr. Neils, and those who WISH they had him!
Thomas Neils is a really nice guy, and funny too however when it comes to class lecture he seems to try and cram a bunch of information at once and barely goes over the new material.
My favourite professor yet. His lectures are really interesting, to keep students from becoming overwhelmed he will tell funny stories or share something he read about recently. He is very clear in his explanations and will try his hardest to help you understand. No multiple choice on his tests but he lets you look at the previous years to study.
I'm an A student and I had Neils for orgo lab 1. He grades SUPER hard and won't answer questions during lab. He is willing to help answer (most) questions outside of lab and the test are hard and unfair. No questions on the test were covered in lab.
Great teacher. Unlike most teachers at GRCC, he knows what he's talking about and explains everything very well. If you put in work, he will give you the grade you deserve.
Really liked this class, as a Chem. major I think this has really prepared me to take Orgo next semester.
Knows what he's talking about. Very good professor and lecturer, but will make you work for your grade and get your stuff done. Amazing, interesting, often funny lectures.
I had prof. Neils for my lab. He was a pretty good instructor. He really wants to make sure his students understand what is going on. He kind of rambles off subject sometimes when explaining the lab, but he was overall good. He's a really nice guy, and he doesn't grade very hard.
Dr. Neils is a great teacher. I had him for honors chemistry, which was a very tough class. He is always eager to answer any questions and understand things in a new way. Tests and quizzes are extremely tough, so be prepared to study hard. Also, expect to be consumed with homework throughout the semester. Lab with him was fun, just annoying.
I am retaking CHM120 at GRCC right now with Dr. Neils and he is such great prof. He knows what he is talking about and really cares about students understanding the material and has a real passion for chemistry. If you go to class and ask questions, this class will be a breeze. Book is only needed if you like to do practice problems.
I hate chemistry but Dr Niels made it fun without being to hard. Lots of fun stories. Reminds me quite strongly of Bill Nye, and you ask for more than that out of a science professor.
My first impression was a testament to who he really was. He is a quirky guy who loves teaching kids about chemistry. I haven't had to ask him for much help on material as his lectures are solid and as interesting as they can be usually, but I did ask him advice on what classes to take next semester and he was very helpful! Nice, passionate guy.
A great teacher. He explains things in a way I understand. He's also really accessible, kind and funny.
He is one of the best teachers I've ever had. I would take his class again I could. He explains things in a way that they're understandable and he answers any questions that you may have. Overall, his class is very fun to be in!
I had taken chem 3 times at a different community college in the area and failed each time. I decided to try GRCC and took Professor Neils class and did amazing. I bought the textbook but never used it, the reading isnt required. Dont miss class youll fall behind, and dont be afraid of office hours because he is always available!
I took this class over the summer to get a better grade than I got at my university. Coming into his class I was sure that my brain wasn't capable of learning chemistry due to my experience prior with this class. Mr. Neils had a way of teaching that made me understand completely. He is also such a caring a silly guy and wants to see you succeed.
Dr. Neils is very compassionate about chemistry. He is extremely helpful in office hours and is always willing to help you 1-on-1 whenever you need it. He uses great analogies to describe things. Chemistry is my hardest subject, but I worked hard and asked many questions and got an A, so it's possible. Short answer testspartial credit!
Amazing teacher, really loves what he is teaching and will help explain anything to you if you just ask! He does go a little fast when lecturing, but thats just part of the course! Happy I took CHM 120 with him!
He is great!! I definitely learn a lot.
Dr. Neils is easily the best professor I've ever had. He puts so much time and energy into making sure students have adequate feedback to improve and he constantly finds new ways to make lecture fun. He knows everything about chemistry there is to know and he loves to help you if you need it. I wish all of my classes could be taught by Dr. Neils.
Thomas Neils is a good professor if you want a good challenge. Taking CHM 120 was very difficult and since we had to go online that made it alittle easier. Lectures were less online vs. in person. He does care about your grade, but you have to try to succeed in his class. He is a very hard grader, but listen and try and you will succeed.
Professor Neils is the best professor I've ever taken. He helps you truly understand the material and is caring. Do the homework well and you'll be prepared for the tests! His lectures are engaging and reviews concepts from textbook reading. He's available outside of class and is extremely helpful. HIGHLY recommend Neils for any chemistry class.
