I took him during the summer and it was REALLY hard. The quizzes he gives are based on reading so it sucks if he hasn't gone over that chapter or maybe forgot somthing. He also requires you to memorize the EXACT date, name, and artist of many artworks. The only thing he went easy on was the papers. It's extremely hard to get an A in this class.
I took Gothic Art History this summer with Professor O'Leary thinking that it was going to be one hell of an interesting class. I COULDN'T be ANY MORE wrong. This class is boring, and O'Leary makes the subject even more boring. JUST READ THE BOOK. He also uses USELESS videos that is streamed on Youtube. He's also ALWAYS late. SO incredibly boring.
He goes over a lot of information, but it also very informative and extremely helpful outside of class. He will also work with you to help you do your best in this class.
He's a nice guy, the class just covers so much information that its extremely hard to be able to retain all of it. he shows powerpoints every class. you have to read 120+ pages for a 60 point quiz which you have no idea what he will test you on. I am studying for a quiz right now and was curious to see his reviews because this is lunatic!
Every single class is a lecture powerpoint, he is late to half the classes if he is even there at all. Covers way toooo much information to be able to retain it all. A very VERY boring class. Extremely vague on what will be on quizzes and midterm/finals. Altogether do not take his class!!!
This teacher does not care about his basic Art History course. He only used powerpoints, was extremely dull, and showed up 45 minutes late to the FINAL. Stay away from this useless class!
This class is not for the faint of heart. You have to are able to memorize 25-30 slides for the two exams and be able to name the piece of art, the artist, the year it was created, the medium, and it's significance for the time period, you will succeed. Two quizzes that are very difficult only worth 5% of grade and visit two museums write two papers
2 quizzes: 5%, 2 papers:1st-10%, 2nd- 20%, midterm-25%, and final-25%. He can change percentages. Attendance MANDATORY. Everything he tells you ends up being on the midterm and final. Quizzes are hard. I had him for 3 art history classes. It was all right. Not that great uploading slides to follow in class. Best to bring labtop during lectures.
He's a nice professor and really loves what he teaches about. However he expects us to learn a huge amount of material at a very fast pace. His lectures are all pwrpoints and they're basically what's in the book. Thats why I don't think attendance is a big deal. His papers are very easy but his exams have no study guide. But he is an easy grader
He is a great professor! You need to have a great interest in art history if you want to succeed in this class. He is very passionate and thorough in his lectures. YOU MUST read from the book to do well on the quizzes. As for the exams, memorize memorize memorize! It's up to you if you want a good grade, I got an A in his class.
There is a lot of material to cover but if you read & use the study guides, you can get a good grade. I didn't care for the grading structure as there were only a few chances get points. One low score and the overall grade will really suffer. He took weeks to grade things so it is difficult to know if you should W or drop before the deadline.
Take his classes if you are interested in an Art/Art History major. I felt like I came out knowing so much more when I transfered to a cal state because of him. He's the best professor I had at saddleback by far and he really cares about the subject. I wish I could have him for every art history class. It was so worth the money I paid.
Dr. O'Leary has received, unfairly, negative reviews only because his classes are difficult. He is always very clear on EXACTLY what you will be expected to know for his tests. He is the most knowledgeable art professor I've ever met, and he is always more than willing to help. All you need to do well in his classes is to put in a little work.
He is very knowledgable. Everything is very clear. You have to keep up with the readings, and you will do well on the quizzes. He always emails, always uses blackboard. He is very nice, he does not want you to fail. He doesn't give extra credit, or want you to beg him for your grade. Take this teacher.
Has engageing and real life experiences that keeps you entertained during dry periods of the lecture. He sometimes had sceduling conflicts with Faculty meetings, so be so check e-mails for canceled or late starting classes.
Great teacher. Hard tests. Really pushes you to learn. Challenging but interesting. He's laid back in his element and surprising with his humor. Great listener. Very helpful. Whole course plotted out on syllabus, no surprises. MUST read the textbook. 2 essays, 2 brutal tests. Not for the faint of heart or for cell phone addicts. I loved it.
Mr. O'Leary is very helpful when it comes to describing the art that you're looking at. If you read the book you will do well. I made flashcards for the test and midterm and got an A on both. He is very lax with the spelling. As long as you get the general idea then he counts it as a point. I loved this teacher.
This professor gives very little feedback to his students. It seems that he wants his students to fail. He lectures from the book, but rewrites the questions in a way that is hard to figure out. He loves the subject matter, and unfortunately makes it difficult for his students to love it also. Over all, his class is a waste of time.Read the book
Dr. O'Leary is the man. His quizzes are worth only 10%. The two essays are graded modestly. And the two tests are what impact your grade. All you have to do is memorize 25 slides(name, artist, date) per test with a short essay question. You don't have to show up to class, but make a habit of going as he is a VERY knowledgeable professor. TAKE HIM!
His class is 98% lectures. Takes a LONG time to put up graded material on blackboard. My final for that class is in less than 3 days and he still has not put up the study guide .felt like going to his class was pointless if his quizzes are only 15 Q's and gives us so much info that we don't need.
He never came to class and was always late. Class is relatively easy if you read the book. I thought it was important to pay attention to his lectures and ask questions because you learn the artwork better.
Right now I am writing an essay and I seriously was devastated to find that I have been writing it wrong the whole time. He is not concise with instruction and how we should format the essay.
Im not really sure what everyones talking about... He is very clear as to what you need to study on the midterm/final. He posts all the ppts for the class, practice quizzes (opt), essay prompts, videos shown in class, and emails. I barley opened the book. I take REALLY good notes and pay attention.
I do like art, but it's not my major. Tom is a nice guy, but I would say that he rather is in his own world. Not very helpful tho. Got an A from reading like crazy out of the book. My advice: If this class is a must he is ok, otherwise, find something else.
O'Leary is a good professor. He's truly passionate about what he is teaching. He also could answer any question I had, he's very knowledgable about all parts of art history. I really enjoyed his class, and learned a lot. The two essays were graded easily and the final and midterm are super easy if you look at the powerpoint.
one word, EASY. Go to class, write your essays like you care. Do the review. I took the final (75 questions) in 8 minutes and missed 1 question. With that said, I missed 2 classes and put time into my essays and participated in class.
TAKE AS A SUMMER CLASS.Easy A but you have to GO TO CLASS! the quiz/midterm/final are all based on his study guides. Memorize them guarentee A+ Loved him! Its a long class since its in the summer but trust me it will be worth it onece you have that A. His lectures are so ensightful learned to love the class. Act intrested, and he will like you more
Professor O'Leary is really nice! Although the class feels boring while you're in it, you come out with a lot of great insight on what art is all about. & he's funny. The class is an easy A as long as you study from his study guides, don't BS the papers, and pay close attention to the dates that things are due. PS:dont buy the book
took both Anct-Goth and Ren-Mod classes this semester. He was late a lot. I came to class and doodled. Failed most quizzes, A's on both midterms, finals and papers. A in the first class (still hasn't posted second part's grades but will be an A. Class was very dull. Don't buy book just study the test packet and memorize date/years/artist name gglol
Professor O'Leary is an excellent Art History instructor with a subtle wit. His instruction is simple and he may seem deadpan, but if you ask questions in lecture you can really learn more about Art than just memorizing stuff. Professor O'Leary is very knowledgeable; get the books, do not miss a class, use flash cards and you'll do fine.
He gives you everything you need to succeed in class. Go to class and get the text book. I also recommend the Writing about Art book because it helped a lot with the essays. There is no need to get the Abacus to Zeus book. ALL of the quizzes are online before you have to go to class which is nice. They are the exact same questions. Doesnt email
Really passionate about art history, I've learned a lot from him so far and wish I could take all my history classes with him. He has great wit and is very funny/sarcastic sometimes. LONG lectures, great content.
The greatest professor ever. So understanding. He care's about his students. Book is needed, easy grader on papers. 1 trip to the L.A. museum. He makes art history easy. He makes people who were otherwise uninterested, interested. Tip: Read the first introduction in book, and study the history of the kingdom, more than the actual history. A breeze.
He is very knowledgable, and helpful if you ask. Be prepared to force yourself awake though, especially for a mid-day class, he lectures with strictly power points with all the lights off & its photo history ... yawn. Oh, don't yawn loudly. Lots of martial to work with. Full power points and extra info online.
Must do ALL the assignments, essays, and work in order to pass. He gives no grace and no extra credit for late or missing assignments. He makes it clear that he doesn't care about your GPA if you don't do the work for his class. I missed a paper deadline by one minute and he wouldn't take it. Real bummed about it.
Doesn't TEACH anything. Shows powerpoints and videos that give background information but don't actually say anything important. Quizzes are easy but papers are absurd. Expects a paper done the first week of class and he hasn't even taught anything yet (not that he ever gets there). Avoid him if at all possible.
Dr. Thomas O'Leary is well educated and well knowledgeable instructor. He covers almost all materials in chapters. You have the book and well organized PowerPoint slides to study at home. Participation and attendance both matters. Exams are not hard and he does not expect you to know all the detail. You will learn a lot in his clas
taking this online was a big mistake. Super unclear about what he expects from you and does not act like he cares about this class at all. quizzes are okay as long as you read, but assignments are ridiculous. I've taken several online classes, but I've never had to email the teacher more than once a week for clear instructions. DO NOT TAKE.
Professor O'Leary is a very unclear educator. i took his online course and would not recommend it at all. he expected us to read a textbook, but didn't tell us the name. His lectures were nonexistent as his powerpoints contained only pictures, no information whatsoever. Also, it is the end of the semester and he has not yet graded my midterm.
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS. Instructions are unclear, & he takes forever to grade. Fall semester starts tomorrow & he has not inputted the midterm grade yet (taken a month ago). He is the worst person to reach. I have a program that tells me when ppl open emails & he has opened several of mine & doesn't respond. Never had more anxiety about a class b4.
Avoid at all cost! No communication whatsoever. You need to invest some serious time in this class, not for studying unfortunately but to figure out what is required from you. This class is unfair to the students simply because the lack of communication by this professor is a solid foundation for failures.
Definitely on the list of least favorite professors. Very disorganized and the reading is brutal. Often forgot to post quizzes a writing assignments until right before due, but still expected you to turn them in on time. Oh, and there is a field trip first two weeks of classdidn't get much of a heads up on that one.
By far the worst teacher Ive ever had the displeasure of having. Ive never met somebody, let alone a teacher, who is so vague and unclear. There is not a single point in the class where he actually taught us anything too. We read the powerpoints and book ourselves, and discussed it by ourselves. No help whatsoever.
This class is an easy A, just show up, pay attention to lecture and study the online study guides(which are identical to the quizzes) and you'll pass. Mid-term and Final were all based upon pieces where you needed to know artist, date, title and meaning. idk why people are complaining about oleary. He is extremely intelligent and knows his stuff.
I took his internet class so my expierence may be a little different. Art history is in general boring but his class wasn't that bad. He did assign four papers but two of those papers are the final and midterm that he gives the prompt in adance. He's an easy grader on essays and quizzes as long as you try. I would recommend him for anyone
This is a class you have to really pay attention in if you want to succeed. Interesting if you enjoy learning about different cultures or history in general. There is a ton of information to process and remember, but tests are simple you are told exactly what will be on them. If you have questions, just ask and he'll always do his best to answer.
I took his 8 week ARTH 25 class last semester, he is above all a very good teacher! He is very passionate about what he teaches. His lectures can be a little overwhelming sometimes, but his quizzes are super easy! He is also an easy grader and if you try you will pass! I got an A in his class. I really recommend taking him!
Super easy.
Professor O'Leary is very knowledgable about the material. He has always been really great with emailing me back in regards to the questions I had in the class. Just be a grown up and meet the deadlines and don't make any excuses. I think he really cares about his students as long as they try.
Took the online class during the spring and am happy I did due to how straight forward it was. Everything is spelled out for you and most of the points are easily earned. The most difficult part was the mid-term, so tab the book with all of the slides he provides. Go to a museum, write the papers and check your grammar
I took his online class. 2 museum visits and a paper for each visit. A midterm exam including an essay and a final research paper. Also, be aware of weekly discussion boards & quizzes. It was hard to communicate with him via email. So you are kinda on your own. the syllabus is not clear. you have to work hard for this class, but you can get an A.
disorganized& Doesnt grade the work. exams R heavily weighted, amount of time given is unacceptable, considering the content. He's setting students up 2 fail. syllabus is unclear doesn't explain what he expects. Doesn't respond in timely manner, doesnt notify his students of changes. worst experience I've had @saddleback .hes being paid for nothing
Very straight forward from the very 1st session. As long as you study and take notes on lectures you'll be a 100% ready for the exams and essays. Fun class, and I was never a art person.
Amazing. He's very straight forward and easy. Take notes and study them before the exam and you will end up with an A.
i took his art history online class this class was great to take online he gave quite a bit of homework but i expected that from an online class i learned a lot about art history and i was able to finish my homework on my own time as long as it was before the deadline the teacher wasn't that hard to get a hold of him via email good teacher overall
Professor O'Leary gives very long powerpoint lectures, but they are mostly pictures with no descriptions. His class is pretty straight forward, but he takes a very long time to grade anything, so you never really know how you are doing or if you should do something differently until it is too late.
He's very vague on blackboard. He replies to emails quickly, but his instructions are VERY VAGUE. Homework is easy, one a week you write a discussion post. Lectures are vague, just a bunch of pictures. Tests are essay heavy. Two papers for the class, but it is mandatory for one that you go to a museum. He grades slow.
He is a horrible teacher. Is very vague in how and what he teaches. Gives you facts that he contradicts later. Get ready to read and write a lot. Lots of power points with just pictures, and no explanation. He goes over content way too fast to even copy down or commit to memory. Unfortunately you have to take this class from him.
Vague on directions/instructions. Quizzes are multiple choice. Discussion Board posts are easy but with essays, he is a harsh grader who doesn't give any feedback.
I took his online Art History class and I really liked it! His instructions were very straight forward and he responds quickly to emails. One downside of his online class, however, was that his powerpoint lectures were not very helpful, but as long as you read the chapters, you should be fine. He provides study guides which were very useful!
Extremely rude/degrading towards students. You won't get your papers or tests back until the end, so don't expect to know your grade. Treats his students like children. Always gives vague answers on what's going to be on the test. Grades his papers like an english prof. Bad attitude. Bad lectures. Worst. Teacher. Ever. You'll regret taking him.
Super cool guy. Sarcastic humor is plentiful, and he is not as harass as his syllabus makes him out to be. Quizzes are kind of gnarly, because he asks for minute details that you will miss if you skip class. So be careful to skip on the weeks the quizzes test on. Not very hard at all.
I took this as an online 8-week course. It was time-consuming, as there is A LOT of reading. There were two discussion boards per week, 2 papers, a midterm, 4 quizzes, and a final paper. The midterm and quizzes are straight from the study guides and the midterm prep powerpoint. He's not a super hard grader, and he responds quickly to emails.
Was a pretty easy class and he was nice.
I took ART 25 & 26 as 6 wk classes and I don't recommend this professor. He did not abide by the syllabus for ART 26 which led to a lot of confusion with students. I know students who emailed him and never heard back. The hardest part about these classes is the vagueness in his directions. Honestly, they were easy classes but you won't learn much.
I took his online 6wk ARTH25&26 class and it wasn't the most pleasurable experience. The work isn't hard but it is very tedious, long, and time consuming. He combines 2-3 weeks of work into 1. The last week of the course, I had 5 discussions, 2 five page papers, 2 finals, and 2 quizzes that were all due on friday if i combined both classes.
Easy A. Easy grader as long as you show effort. I never really used the book. I just researched subjects online myself. It was a disaster trying to get ahold of this teacher. He went weeks without providing grades, and forgot to upload major assignments that equalled to about fifty percent of our grade until the last week. We all panicked.
He acts like his online class is the only class you have. He assigns 2 units and 2 discussions for each week. You'll pass easily if this really is your only online class and if you know how to manage your time. Just do your work on time and the way he wants. If you need a history class take GD 1 with Prof Christopher Claflin. He's the best.
Took online class and it was great! Not too difficult and not too much homework. A couple of written assignments, online quizzes and discussion boards, and gives powerpoint test review for midterm and final. I would definitely take another class with him.
Pretty basic class. If you keep up with the discussion posts and study for the tests, youll be fine. Theres A LOT of reading material but youll be alright if you skim well and pick and choose the most important stuff to read. Basically, an Easy A. Just keep up with everything! (Tip: For all the quizzes there are flash cards on quizlet)
I had him during a summer term, so maybe things are better during the normal year, but he is so hard to contact and his instructions are incredibly unclear and contradictory. He says he checks email and doesn't, didn't give office hours, doesn't answer phone calls, and barely makes any remarks on papers. Also, he makes SO MANY TYPOS.
No extra credit, I took it online and don't even buy the book. I search the information and resource online, it is better that way. 13 discussion posts, 1 midterm, 1 final, and 2 papers. He got study guides for the exams and it is 60% exactly the same. So if you study, it is an easy A. It is fun to learn art too.
Content in the class was informative and fun to learn. Professor was difficult to contact and never responded to emails.
I took his accelerated 8 week summer class. He doesn't respond to emails quickly and I found him patronizing when he did respond. The syllabus was vague, so I ended up missing an important assignment. I kept an A in the class until this mistake, but the amount of work was stressful and time-consuming, especially since he offered no extra credit.
Took his classes for my art major: animation. I did his summer 8-week course and didnt try as hard. But do put into work for his discussion posts and replies. He is an easy grader, especially for papers. Same routine and assignments throughout the semester.
(8wk course) You can tell he doesn't know how to use technology, his lectures are just slideshows with no explanations so he just ripped what he uses for in-person classes and put it online. Heavy info and workload & he gives until Wednesday to complete it for full credit. I suggest doing one lecture on Monday, 2nd on Tuesday, then DBs on Wednesday
This class was an easy A. One discussion board a week, two formal papers, quizzes at the end of each week, and two exams. The discussions can take an hour but as long as you use information and examples from the book you will get full credit. I recommend taking this class, the professor is helpful and knowledgable and the material is interesting!
I took Arth25 online with Prof. O'Leary this past semester. There is a lot of reading and it's important to do the weekly discussion boards. For the papers make sure you pay close attention to formatting and citations! He did respond to my emails quickly and was attentive. Overall, I would recommend his class.
I had a mixed experience with this course. I put a lot of effort into every assignment, not because it was hard, but because I was interested. Going into finals, I had an equivalent of an A+. Something came up. I reached out to the professor. He never emailed me back. He graded an assignment I wasn't able to turn in. I felt misled. My grade tanked.
Really harsh grader on discussions, takes a while to respond to emails. For the final didn't upload a review until the day before it was due. The class is mostly the discussions and the replies, other than that it's very structured.
I took his ARTH25 and 26 courses. For each class, there is a weekly discussion and quiz. There are also two papers, a midterm, and a final. As long as you provide examples for each of your points in discussions, you'll get full credit. The classes are pretty organized, I definitely recommend them.
He's super chill, athough towards the end of our semester he made us take a final, do a project, and a 5 paged essay. For the most part, the class is super easy just busy work.
I wonder how he can teach 9 classes(6 saddleback, 2 Los Angeles city college, and 1 Fullerton college class) in one semester at three different schools. I am really really wondering about what kind of quality of classes he'd provide to students.
To become a full-time art history professor at a community college these days, I heard, one needs to have a Ph.D. It refers to teaching complex art history that involves some scholarly conscience and dedication, and slideshows without explanations or narratives are not enough.
I'm not even sure if I got a B. He hasn't graded any of the 3 essay exams, each worth 100 points. I could be failing right now. He doesn't teach. 0 online videos. Whole class is read the textbook and post on discussion board. He grades essays like an English prof even though its arth. Some grammatical corrections were wrong too.
The content of the class was interesting, however O'Leary was below average. He never graded any exams throughout the entire course so I have no clue what grade I am actually ending with. He is also very bad at responding to emails, and never responded to a question I had regarding the exams. His syllabus and rubrics are also extremely vague.
This review is for an 8 week course. This course is self-taught via PowerPoints with hyperlinks to more websites. In addition, you are required to read the 3 200-300-page books as well. Emails are not responded to quickly. Books are only sold online and not available in my library. Not a fun class. be aware that this is a hard class.
My recommendation id you want to take Arth class its nice in this college But pecarfull to take it with this instrucater as He is So hard grader for few things and don't accept any chance to Retake the discussion again or exam even if you in the limit time before pass Due trying with nice instructor to grantees you will pass and give extra credit
Overall easy! There were weekly discussions that were followed by quizzes but they were easy if you took notes on the lectures. The work is just really monotonous and boring and the worse part were the two papers but those were fairly easy, and not graded harshly. There was also a mix up on due dates and when I emailed he was really nice.
There was a discussion and quiz for each unit, since I took his 8-week class this meant 2-3 discussions and quizzes per week but they're easy as long as you read the lectures and take notes. There are 2 exams, 2 papers, and a project at the end of the semester where you have to make your own piece of art. As long as you do the minimum you will pass
Very slow grader, class was easy but discussion boards were EXTREMELY TEDIOUS. Has not finished grading essays even after course ended. Tedious essays. Quizzes are easy and discussion boards are expected to be really detailed.
Awful teacher. Avoided interacting with students and submitted grades extremely late with little feedback. Difficult to contact outside of class.
I had previously left a negative rating of him, but this class changed my mind. I previously had an online class with him, which was bad. However, the in person class I had with him was a lot better. He cares about his students and is very knowledgable in what he teaches. I would highly recommend taking an in person class with him.
Currently taking this class for 8 weeks online. Discussions and quizzes are simple but 2 paper essay assignments are pointless and difficult to do. They are worth 100 points and if you either miss or fail them, grade goes down. He just wants to make you fail the class. TOTALLY UNFAIR with deadlines for 2 paper assignments. DON'T TAKE HIM!!!!
He gave 8-10 chapters of reading, slideshows 200+ long, and several videos to watch... every week. I was spending more time on this 3 unit class than I was for my 4 unit classes. While he is reasonable about grading, the material of the class was incredibly boring. He is not clear about what you need to know for the exams or for the papers.
8wks online, all I can say is its lazy. No real lectures, just links and presentations of images. It is self taught without any cohesiveness to the material. Exam content is ridiculous. Names and dates but he doesn't even provide artist names in his presentations. So slow with grading papers. Didn't even bother to spell my name right in emails.
Claims this a no textbook class, but each quiz came directly from the optional textbook and answers were not available from the readings he gave. You can find a free version of the book online.
Every assignment opens up to another. Syllabus was clear and vague at the same time, making it so I got 11/12 multiple attempts until guessed the seemingly missing info from the syllabus. Professor expects students to go to museums w/ proof of ticket. I've taken multiple online classes through saddleback and this one has definitely been the hardest
Professor O'Leary runs a rigorous class, but provides helpful feedback. While the workload is heavy, using resources like unstuck ai for study prep made it manageable. Overall, a rewarding experience for engaged students.
Good luck. Online is a joke, just a copy paste of some reference materials probably used in lectures, but no explanation given + yt videos 0% for late assignments I thought I did okay on the exams, but the grades came back way lower than expected Feels like a prof who doesn't care and won't adapt to online, but will sign up to teach it anyway
The professor is very rude and has unrealistic expectations. It's generally an easy class to pass but all we do is lectures and papers. Very boring and showing up is a participation grade.
