Dr. P is an awesome chem professor

Doctor Pentecost was an extremely helpful teacher and made sure everyone understood subjects before moving on. His tests are very easy because he uses hard examples in class to get kids practicing, but then puts easy questions on the exams so as not to confuse the kids who aren't as serious about chemistry and are just taking it as a gen-ed.

Extremely helpful. Very easy if you pay attention and understand the concepts. Makes sure kids understand before moving on. Incredibly easy tests and quizzes. Looks like John Candy mixed with a badger. Recommended.

Dr. Pentecost is a great guy, a fantastic teacher, and really cares about the students and his career. His tests are fair and he is always looking for ways to improve. If you want a chemistry class where you won't be bombarded with facts and learn a good deal, then be in his class. Welcome to GVSU Dr. P!!!

Prof. P was one of the best professors I've ever had, and that goes outside the department as well. If you're not to great in CHM take his class. It's not that he makes it easy, it's that he makes it easily understandable.

By far the BEST professor I've had. Incredibly helpful in and out of the class. As hard as chemistry was in high school for me he really helped me understand CHM 116. He is a really funny guy and a great professor who loves his job and helping students learn. Anyone would be crazy not to take Dr. Pentecost.

Everything posted on here so far are true. Dr. P is definitely my favorite teacher that I have had so far. He goes about teaching subjects in a great order, which really helps for understanding and tying sections together. DEFINITELY TAKE HIM! I only wish he were going to be teaching some higher level classes so I could have him again as a prof.

He is the absolute BEST teacher I have ever had. Chemistry is not my best subject but he gave me hope and confidence. He loves chemistry and he loves teaching. He will do anything to help you. His tests are fair and he's always looking for way to improve even though he's great! DEFINITELY take him! He even helped me with my test taking anxiety!!

Without a doubt the best professor I've had in college thus far

I had an extremely hard time with this class because I am not good at chemistry, but he was so helpful and always had time to explain things to me. I would have failed completely if he hadn't helped me so much. My favorite professor so far!!!

Dr. P is very helpful and helps you get the grade you are looking for. Tests can be hard, but he is a very fair grader. Take this professor!

Dr. P was an all around great professor. He explained everything very thoroughly and to a degree we could understand. I wish i would have taken 116 with him too! Tests were fairly easy and over the material he covered in class. Never used my book. definitely recommend Dr.P!

Had him for both CHM 115 and CHM 116 this year. Great professor with good clarity and alway willing to help in office hours or outside of class. 116 was definitely a harder course, but if you show up to all of the discussion and lectures, you could be ensured an A. Drops lowest test score, or replaces it if you get a higher score on the final :)

Good at explaining things; takes time to answer everyone's questions. The only thing I didn't like about him was that he always seemed to cater to lazy people by pushing back deadlines and dropping lots of assignments. But... a lot of people like him even more for that reason. Ver nice guy and I would recommend his class.

Uses really good examples to make eveything make very good sense. Always willing to Speak after class, review grades, help in office hours. Very kind and very funny. I couldn't not pay attention in class even if I tried. Definitely recommend taking this prof.

I had Pentecost for 115 and 116. This guy cares so much about students understanding and succeeding in his classes. He is always willing to meet with students who need help. Amazing!

Great professor! He's extremely helpful and truly enjoys teaching. His tests aren't too difficult, and he curves them at the end of the year. He also gives out occasional extra credit on days when he thinks there will be poor attendance. (when hlidays are coming up)

He is a fantastic teacher, and hilarious. He's helpful if you ask for help, and even makes it a point to make extra group study times, if you want to go. He's really a great teacher, highly recommended.

Great professor, made chemistry fully understandable

Great professor! This was a tough class but he's always available to help out. Don't be afraid to go to office hours because he's a really nice guy. I met a lot of students taking other chemistry classes who went to Dr.P for extra help! Highly recommended but you'll still have to work if you're not a science whiz!

BEST professor I've had so far! Dr. P is AWESOME!! I would take him again in a second. He is very helpful and he actually cares. I would recommend him to anyone. Take his class. Its not the most easiest class but he makes it interesting and I love it. He does notes on a tablet he has and that way works GREAT!

Had Professor Pentecost for both 115 and 116 and he truly is a remarkable professor. Always willing to help students, exams are fair, tells you exactly what you need to know for every exam, and describes everything in ways that are easier for students to understand. Take him for both 115 and 116 if you can.

I had Dr. P for both CHM 115 and 116, he is an awesome professor. Very willing to help students understand the topics and is very clear on what is needed to get an A in his class. I would recommend Dr. P to my friends.

I would recommend taking Dr. P for CHM 115 and 116. I had little chemistry background knowledge going into these classes and ended up with a B+ and A-. If you make an honest effort, you will do fine in his class.

He is my favorite professor I have ever had thus far!! VERY helpful!! Nicest teacher I have ever met and he really cares about his students. I still go back to him for help with my other classes. Recommend for everyone to take him at least once!

This Professor was the most attentive to the students in his course that I have ever seen. He did all he could to make the course as easy and understandable. Since the base content in the class is still chemistry it not super easy to understand but if you have any questions he will help. Go to class and you will pass.

Love him!! He's honestly a great person that cares a lot about his students. You can tell that he really has a passion for chemistry. He's very personable and knowledgeable. I highly recommend.

Pentecost is seriously the best prof ever. He is so engaged in the students and wants everyone to do well. He will help you with just about anything. He tells you that even if you don't have him in the future, you can still come to his office and he will help you! He cares about his students and how they do in his class. I RECOMMEND HIM 100%!!!!

Pentecost is a wonderful professor. He honestly cares about every students success and is more than willing to help you understand. Chemistry is usually a tough class for most people but he teaches it really well, if you show up to every class and listen and do your homework you will be fine. Highly recommended.

Had Dr. P for my first class ever taken at Grand Valley and couldn't be happier that I took him. The class is challenging, but he cares and is willing to help whenever you need him. Such a great guy, and makes things very clear and understandable. He's also hilarious, and extremely reasonable. Homeworks and quizzes are easy. TAKE HIM!

I had Dr. Pentecost for lecture. He's a very nice guy and will help you however he can. I absolutely hate chemistry with a passion, but he made it a little more bearable. Tests are not bad as long as you thoroughly study the material from both your notes and supplemental worksheets he gives you. WebAssign is awful and he is aware of it.

Dr. Ps is awesome! If I didn't have him for 116, I honestly don't know if I would have passed he class. He is very committed to knowing his students and helping them the best he can.

Makes a effort to get to know you, realizes flaws in academic system, will work out any kinks or problems your having very quickly, funny as all get out, I love this man I would take him again in a heartbeat

He is a wonderful professor who is really good about answering questions if you have them. Come to his office hours, they are helpful if you don't understand something. He is not condescending, which is really nice. Also, I he never stops talking about his son (apparently he goes to GV and is exceedingly smart) which I think is adorable.

Professor Pentecost is probably the best professor I've had. I would highly recommend his class to anyone. His lectures are great, he is funny and he makes it very interesting. Compared to what i've herd about other professors, his class is pretty easy. If you do the homework and take good notes in class, it's pretty easy to pull off at least a B+

Pentecost is probably the best Chem professor for gen Chem at GV. Really makes sure students succeed with curving grades at the end of the semester and weighing your tests in your favor. Webassigns are tedious but good for understanding info.

If you HAVE to take a chemistry class, definitely check if you can take it with Pentecost. Chemistry is a difficult class but he makes it do-able. He is entertaining, answers every email and averages your test grades so that the best score, weighs the highest. I would definitely take him again.

He was very good at explaining a tough subject. He gives an easy lecture to understand and goes over homework questions in class. He is eager to help if asked. I would highly recommend over other professors.

Pentecost is hands down one of the best profs I've ever had. He is extremely clear on expectations, gives study guides, and will break a problem down step by step so you understand it. Prof. P. is the nicest professor I've ever had. He is constantly asking students for feedback in order to improve and better teach his class. He loves answering any questions his students may have, and provides very clear lectures. He also curves the tests to the benefit of his students. Great humor, and tries to get to know his students.

Amazing teacher!! I am so happy I had him for Chm180, he explained all concepts extremely well and was always wiling to give extra help. He also reminded us about upcoming assignments, went over homework in class, and gave study guides for test and quizzes. Grade isn't solely on test/quizzes so that also helped a ton

IF YOU STRUGGLE IN CHEMISTRY, TAKE THIS CLASS. Dr. P has made me so confident in chemistry and I absolutely adore him. He will work with you and the entire class if you are stuck or confused. He's also super funny so don't be afraid to laugh at things he says especially when he refers to things as "stuff." He deserves way higher than a 4.7!

Professor Pentecost is the best professor I have ever had. He really cares about you succeeding. He has answered my emails within minutes on a Friday night, and has met with me even after office hours. He pushes back quizzes and exams if he feels the class needs more time. Dr P was easily the best professor I've had at GV. He responds to emails within 30 minutes usually, even if it is a weekend. He also understands that we have other classes, so if you ask him to extend a homework deadline he will. Unlike other chemistry professors I've had, he never tries to trick you on exams. TAKE HIM!!!!

Professor Pentecost cares first about his students learning, then everything else. He can breeze through material a little quick sometimes but he values student feedback and is constantly adjusting his style. He keeps the mood light and as fun as can be for chemistry. Lots of work for the class but also lots of EC opportunities.

I failed this course this winter, and when I took this class this summer, I can't thank Dr. Pentecost enough. Truly understanding and his lectures are so easy to follow. There is a lot of homework but he goes over it in class and gives extra credit. He made chemistry really fun. If you have too make a choice this would be an easy one!

He assigns homework for each chapter, there are about three quizzes and three tests. He is somewhat picky when it comes to grading. We did a couple of labs here and there that were fun. He uploads all the notes onto Blackboard. The class is designed for nonscience majors so the chemistry aspect wasn't too bad.

Pentecost for lecture is one of the best professors I really like his way of teaching and answering questions. He assigns Chem101 and webassign assignments about once a week but will give you the answers if you ask in lecture. Just go to class and do the assignments and you will pass the class.

If you have the chance to take a course with Pentecost, do it!! I was nervous going into this class and he made it super easy. He's very good at explaining concepts and cares a lot about his students and how they are doing. He's very flexible with deadlines and accommodates to students when needed.

Absolutely by far the best professor I have had at GV. Chem doesn't come too easy to most, but Tom is so caring and will drop anything to help you first. Exams are a tad difficult, but still reasonable and he will help if you ask. 100% recommend him! You will not regret it!

An absolute godsend. I hate chemistry, but Professor Pentecost made it no big deal. You will have to put some effort in to get a good grade but he's widely available and he's super kind. He always reassures us that even if we do bad on one exam its not a big deal. If your taking chemistry take Pentecost FOR SURE.

THE BEST! I took Pentecost after hearing such amazing things and they definitely were right. Im not great at chemistry but Pentecost not only wants you to learn, but will help you in any way possible. He changes his approach based on your needs and will go to extreme lengths to help you learn including having individual weekly meetings.

Professor Pentecost is absolutely amazing!! He is one of the only professors that I have met that actually cares about the success of his students and what grade they receive in the class. He is so helpful and is willing to go the extra mile for any student who may be struggling in his class. The class is hard but he makes it easier.

I LOVED taking this class. Pentecost is a really caring individual. I failed every single quiz/test, barely passing the last four. I still managed to pass his class with a B-. He try's to give a lot of extra points with homework, in class participation etc. I would really recommend taking him! He cares about all his students passing with effort!

Professor Pentecost is an amazing chemistry teacher. He truly wants his students to succeed and he works hard to make sure that all of his students are on the same page in his class. He keeps class interesting and makes real world connections to the information being taught. If you have an opportunity to take his class, I highly recommend!

Dr. P is a great professor. He is super knowledgeable about Chem and overs great resources for extra help. You can email him whenever you want about anything and he does what he can to help. He is a big advocate for mental health and takes in students' schedules when planning out exams so students aren't overwhelmed. Best prof ever.

Dr. P is the greatest professor to ever exist. I would be shocked to meet a better prof and/or human in my life. He genuinely cares about you and your well being. He is basically an angel and willing to help whenever you need it. He will always respond to an email, and its usually within 30 minutes. I would highly recommend choosing his classes.

I had to retake this course because I failed it the first time. I just finished the final exam and got a 99. He is so helpful and sometimes sends out hints for the labs or quizzes. I could not recommend this professor enough.

Had to take this class for my major but he was genuinely the best professor I've ever had. It's a huge lecture but he wants to know everyone personally. He is understanding when things come up and he genuinely cares for our mental health and well being. I've never had a professor care so much and actually take steps to help us when we do struggle.

TAKE HIM IF U CAN!!! I took Pentecost for CHM 116 and LOVED him, so I took him for my HNR course. So caring and understanding of life outside of school. So flexible with hw and exams, and this class specifically was super easy but also very interesting at the same time. Idk how much else to say it but TAKE HIM FOR ANY CLASS U CAN

TAKE HIS CLASSES. Dr. Pentecost is so caring and understanding for all of his students. He will give you an extension on everything. He truly cares that his students are learning and succeeding. As someone who came into chem thinking I wouldn't pass, he made it possible for me to end with a good grade. Best prof ever.

Professor Pentecost is by far the most understanding professor I have had at Grand Valley. He truly understands that students have homework outside of his class and that we get burntout mentally. He is extremely willing to work with his students and give extensions. There are no tests in the class, just presentations and a few papers.

If I could rate this man higher than a 5 I would. He went out of his way multiple times this semester just to help me succeed. You can tell that he actually cares about his students personally and wants the best for them. Loved this prof, pretty sure he was the only reason I passed CHM115. He really cared about the students, his lectures were pretty good, and I wasn't at all scared of going to him for extra help which says a lot lol. Tests were fair and he was pretty lenient with partial credit. I didn't have any friends in class but I still did okay! I highly rec.

Pentecost was an AMAZING professor and is definitely one of my top favorites here at GVSU! He's such a positive and funny guy and he's super clear with his expectations. He adjusted deadlines for the class if we all decided that we needed extra time. I really enjoyed our textbook and the course content was super interesting. He made science fun!

I struggled a lot with chem last semester, but Pentecost was SO helpful in giving additional help and being incredibly supportive. Has shorter but more frequent 'tests', loves giving out half-credit, and is super helpful and flexible out of class. Homework is short and due dates are flexible. So I can't do chemistry to save my life but he got me to pass PERIODDD!!! Great attitude! Just ask questions, do the extra credit assignments, and get those credit hours!!

He is my favorite professor I would take him for every class if I could. He explains things clearly and rephrases concepts if you ask a question. There is literally nothing I would have changed about this class.

Really knows how to help his students when there is a misunderstanding or lots of confusion. He gives helpful note outlines and even lets us pick quiz days based on how well we feel prepared. Cares a lot about his students and their mental health. Super chill!

I wish Prof Pentecost would teach a class on how to be a good professor and all other professors would take it. He was extremely nice and helpful, super funny during lectures, genuinely cared about his students, and was forgiving when I needed to take test late due to being overwhelmed with work. I would recommend him 1000%, take him if you can!!

Loved Prof Pentecost. He made it clear from the very beginning that he prioritizes mental health in his students, which I really liked. You need the textbook for this class and actually do need to read it. The class is structured around one big group project, but he makes it clear that the right groups are formed and that all contribute equally.

Dr. Pentecost is a great teacher, very much deserving of his 5 rating. PChem has some tough content but he has good lectures and does a good job keeping it accessible. All exams are take-home and you get plenty of time to work on them. He also drops the lowest quiz grade you get which is very nice.
