really easy, but GO TO CLASS
No Comments
Can be very funny at times, is very concise with his explanations. If you attend class, no problems should arise.
Lectures can be fun, but cheesy. Basically, go to class, do the WebAssigns/worksheets, and you'll be ok.
Very helpful and nice. Good class. Learned a lot!
Great teacher! His very helpful and he wants students to learn the material. I recommand everyone to take him.
make sure you have the prerequistes or it will be your worst nightmare. but if you have them you will most likely not even need to study.
Pretty boring class, but what stats class is interesting? If you do your webassign you will do fine in the class.
Webassign are almost half your grade. If you do those and go to class everyday he explains things that you need to know. I find his explanation quite lengthy but i think he is trying to make sure we actually know the material. He incorparates alot of sports and real life situations to class exercises and he is a UNC hater .. arent we all :-)
Professor Reiland is a quality teacher who actually cares whether his students get the subject or not. His lectures are easy to understand, and all powerpoints are posted online so students can refer back to them later. His tests are rather simple, and he will answer homework questions in class if students are having difficulties with them.
This class is SUPER easy if you just pay attention and bring your calculator to class. He will answer even the dumbest questions after class and wont make you feel like an idiot. He doesnt take attendance but there are worksheets that are to be turned in at the end of every class and if you miss them thats not good :/ Super easy, great teacher.
Cute old guy super nice and helpful, pay freaking attention and you will do wonderful. Webassigns are fairly easy if you go to class and you also turn in worksheets everyday which add up if you dont go to class. He will answer even the dumbest question and not make you feel like an idiot :) Super teacher, take him.
Great class. Definitely recommend going to class, some webassign problems can be hard if you didn't hear him explain it. He won't completely work out the WA problems but helps you start them if you need help. Very entertaining class with the sound effects in the PP slides. Course pack doesn't follow his PP exactly, so pay attention!
Adding to my previous comment...his tests are much easier than webassign problems because he "can't assume everyone has a graphing calculator." It's a great assumption. Plus you get a note card for formulas.
Really difficult to pay attention. He is sort of monotone and has no excitement for teaching. Webassign homework is EXTREMELY difficult, but there are 4 attempts allowed so it's fairly easy to get a good grade. Tests are difficult to, but a formula card is allowed. I'm a straight A student and I'll be lucky to get a B-/C+ in this class.
I thought this class was really easy! Some of the questions on the tests were tricky, but he allows you have have a "cheat sheet" which is very helpful! He is rather boring, but as long as you study the information he provides you, you will be fine! DON'T BUY THE BOOK! I didn't use mine at all. Also, he HATES UNC!! (thumbs up) :)
Simply put, one of the BEST professors here at NC State. He is personable, patient, and more than willing to help. The WebAssign homework problems are hard but if you touch base with him, he explains it clearly. Clickers, practice tests are very helpful for exams. Great teacher!
Professor Reiland is the nicest guy! Unfortunately, he's a pretty awful teacher. Our lab TA's had a hell of a time trying to teach us information that he simply ignored, and Webassign kicked my butt!! I got so frustrated - It's not easy to have to teach yourself statistics :/
I took the class online so I don't know much about how engaging he actually is, but I had to email him a few times because I was confused on some things and he was very helpful. He once gave me an extension that I didn't even ask for, so that was nice.
The WebAssigns aren't hard at all if you actually study the material instead of trying desperately to find it on google or chegg like most people. Reiland is an excellent professor. His main website has everything you need to master the material. Very enthusiastic in class and genuinely enjoys his job. A huge sports enthusiast too.
Dr. Reiland really is a nice guy. Unfortunately, he is a very poor teacher. Paying attention in class felt useless at times, as not much was well explained. His slides were clearly made years ago and he is just at State to do research. If your good at teaching yourself things from his coursepack, you'll be alright. Otherwise, avoid this class!
Take this class online if you can. The first two tests are extremely easy and you are allowed a double sided formula sheet on all 4 of them (All non cumulative). The homework (between webassign and mastery points on pearson) is essentially 57% of your final grade and you get multiple tries on each problem.
Dr. Reiland is an extremely nice guy, but his lectures are very boring and he isn't the best teacher for introductory statistics. I think that he has a real passion for stats but has a hard time teaching his material in a way that's easy for first-time stats students to understand. The WebAssigns and tests, even with a notecard, are pretty tough.
Be prepared to teach yourself. Might as well not have an instructor at all.
Nice guy (we get it, you really like sportshate UNC), but he's not a good teacher. I've basically had to teach myself the whole class. I'm basically a straight A student but might get a D in this class. The homework is extremely hard, test are pretty rough too. Would love to grab a beer and watch the game with him but not take a class from him.
Dr. Reiland is one of the nicest professors that I have ever had. He is very helpful and will always stay to talk to you and help with anything that he can. His tests are very straightforward, easy, and based on notes. His lectures can be very boring, but overall he's a good professor.
Great professor. His reply emails were quick and useful. If you ask he will give you extensions (sometimes multiple extensions) on deadlines, which demonstrates to me that he actually cares that you know the material.
Professor Reiland was very enthusiastic about what he was teaching. He was very helpful in answering any questions. He quickly corrected my grade when I pointed out an error in my test grading. He was quite easy going.
Be prepared to teach yourself. No chronological order to the textbook so don't bother buying it. He doesn't explain formulas. Nice guy, can't teach. I've emailed him for help multiple times & received a curt response to use the forum instead. He will only help if you ask in person. B+ Stat. credit didn't transfer over. Now I'm stuck w/ a bad grade
If you can teach yourself statistics, this guy is for you! Doesn't teach in order with the book, tests are 17-18 questions (Final is 30) so no room for error. Lectures are boring, he runs off on tangents that don't even apply to the subject. Slow at posting grades, so you're not really ever sure where you stand. Pick a different instructor.
He's extremely monotonous and teaches in just one tone. Just slides through the presentation.
Professor Reiland was a great professor. He was very receptive to answering students question if they had them.
Very sweet old guy who genuinely loves statistics. He uses hilariously bad PowerPoints with sound and animations too. Gives out printed copies of lectures and posts hints for all the homeworks. Lectures are very slow though, but it's because he really takes time to make sure everyone understands. Pretty easy to do well if you study and do the HW.
I thought Dr. Reiland was awesome! Has quite a dry sense of humor, and the little add-ins to his powerpoint almost make it worth it, however I could go without them still. The worksheets were helpful to me and the tests were easy considering you could have a cheat sheet. I don't have my grade in yet but I'm assuming I'll be getting an A. Easy class
Very easy grader. Explains material slowly so you have enough time to understand the new formulas and concepts. Gives many practice worksheets that he goes over with the class. Often lets class out early. Highly recommend.
Professor Reiland is a really great guy, but the class is lecture heavy. I did have to teach myself a lot of the material. Stat is a hard class to teach during a lecture especially with over 300 students but he tried his best. He allows you a sheet to take into tests with you with helps a lot. If you put in the effort you'll get a good grade
Professor Reiland gives many homework on webassign so get ready to do them. They're almost once a week but the answers are available on Quizlet or Coursehero. Anyways his lectures are very boring and his tests are easy if you have a good cheat sheet and have done the practice before the exam.
I never missed A's in math classes and my GPA is 3.7, but I might ending up getting D in this class. Ready to teach yourself. He is basically reading his power points during the class, no practice questions for the students and half of students are not attending or just leaving the class all the time because they know it is not worth to take.
Really nice guy. The tests are much easier than the homework and he allows a cheatsheet on the exam. Basically, take ALL the problems from the PRACTICE exams, and w/e else and put them on your cheatsheet. Take the ENTIRE exam period to do the test and you should be good. A 'C' w/o studying, but prob an A if you actually try. DO THE TOPHATS FREE 100
God bless this man. I made a 56 on one exam and 48 on the final, I never went to class (which isn't that bad because you can just sit at home and do the tophats), only did like 50% of the tophats and only did as much of the WebAssigns as I could do with just finding answers from online and he still gave me a C. I should have gotten a D+ at best.
You have to teach yourself the material out of class. He reads right off a powerpoint during his lectures, which is a terrible way of teaching a calculations heavy class. He claimed that he doesn't give extra credit to individual students, but then gave a curve to select people at the end of the semester. Over half the class failed his 2nd exam
He reads right off a powerpoint and doesn't go into much detail on how to do any of the math. Half the class failed his tests, but he never acknowledged this. At the end of the semester he only gave those who did poorly a curve so that his grade distribution wouldn't be terrible. I hope you have a Chegg account because you will be teaching yourself
All I'm going to say is his only good quality as a professor is his curving at the end of class. There's a homework due every week, and your grade is 50% homework 50% tests. You won't learn anything in class.
Dr. Reiland tries very hard to make his class fun by adding different sound effects to his slides and having the questions be related to real life problems. This being said, his entire class is a straight lecture where he reads off a powerpoint that is hard to follow. Very sweet guy but very tough class. Chegg study is necessary.
This class basically consisted of the professor rapidly clicking through a bunch of equations on the screen and us struggling to figure out the homework on our own. The tests weren't that hard though.
Professor Reiland is without a doubt one of the best professors Ive ever had. Hes extremely knowledgeable on the material and is more than happy to help with any topic youre struggling with. The powerpoints are vital to class success, which is why he focuses on them so much. Just do the work (not Cheggs or Coursehero) and you should be alright.
If you take Reiland for business stats, be prepared to read the textbook and the lecture slides til you nail the material. The homeworks weren't difficult, but I struggled on the exams because of the WebAssign format and failure to study weeks in advance and to read the textbook. Thankfully, he curved grades at the end of the year.
Reiland seems like a good guy but he is an awful professor. He's one of those professors who teaches a practical subject by flipping through a powerpoint and vaguely explaining the theoretical side of statistics, leaving you to figure out how to do all of the work. The practice exams for the second and final exam won't be very helpful.
I thought the lectures could have been more engaging. No one in the class really pays attention due to the professors lack of authority. He sounds very insecure while he teaches and he uses "okay" anytime he's moving from a topic like a confirmation. Unfortunately, I think he's a bit too old to be teaching at this point. Should've taught in 80's
There is very little room for error in his course, only having 2 exams means doing poorly on one makes it so that you can now only maintain below the highest letter grade at best. Exams seem to be designed unnecessarily complicated just to make up for people getting to use a "cheat sheet," which barely helps anyway, given how little time you get.
Nice guy just not a good learning style. Lectures are boring and we never got to practice or really even learn statistics. Power points are just slides showing formulas and then teaching yourself how to do it all later before the test. Tests are nothing like the homework or material learned in class and even bringing a cheat sheet won't help.
Lectures get a bit boring. Webassign homework for each chapter is a bit tough but very helpful. Exams tough but you get a cheat sheet. The grading scale is set up to help you out, just go to class and do all of the homeworks. You just need to make Cs on the exams and you'll be fine. He offers a plenty of help outside class.
Nice guy, but this class is extremely unorganized. Could be because it's his first time doing online. Resources and materials are everywhere. You will be teaching yourself.
I took Reiland's class Spring 2020 and it was great. It was pretty much an easier recap of basic stats with very little new topics. He posted helpful advice and info in the webassign forums which was super useful. In person you could tell he was really trying to teach the material as best as he can. Even when we switched to online he was available.
I can't comment on his teaching as the class was entirely online. But the tests are exactly like the HW. They are open note/open internet. You have 24 hours to do the test and can leave and come back to finish at any point throughout that time.
Dr. Reiland's course was all online and you will definitely be teaching yourself. He has ecoursepack lectures on his webpage under the weekly agenda tab, where you basically go through them to make sure you know enough for the weekly WebAssign hw. Only two tests and a final, but all homework is worth 40% of your grade. 10% grade boost bc of COVID.
Mr. Reiland requires students to go through his personal website for the class, which appears to have not been updated in decades. The flashing red lights, random cartoons, suspicious links, and lack of organization on the homepage and throughout creates a stressful environment for the class.
He is willing to work with you outside of class but the tests are nothing like the homework. Excel will be your friend! The textbook and powerpoint were confusing and unhelpful. I found myself learning the material on my own rather than using the powerpoints. He is a good guy, but the class is terrible.
Here is why you should take this professor: you don't like when your teacher helps you learn, you want to read a syllabus that is poorly formatted, you want to be told to visit a website that was made in the early 90's to find all the information about the class (it really isn't anywhere else), you like to receive completely vague help in class.
Reiland is alright, not very organized and you have to use about 8 different locations for class materials. Super long powerpoints that you use to basically teach yourself. Good thing is that hw & tests are 50-50% so ace the hw and you can get mid to low B's on tests and get an A in the class. Tests are few questions so be careful.
His PowerPoints were straight garbage. His tests are very hard and you better do both practice tests as you dont know which one he'll base it off of. However while this class may suck, the HW is heavily weighted so do the best you can on those as they can save you from failing. But, be ready to sit down for 4+ hours when doing HW. Good luck.
Get ready to teach yourself everything in this class. His website and Powerpoints are horrible and absolutely useless. To do well get a 100 on the homework and do the practice tests to help with the exams. Go to office hours if you have questions about the homework. I would definitely recommend taking this class over the summer. Glad it's over.
Aside from a couple of formulas & steps, his powerpoints are completely useless. You pretty much have to teach yourself the material. HW is 50% of ur grade & pretty easy so make sure to get 100s on all of them. Do the practice tests he gives you and you can do ok on the tests. Take it over the summer if you can cuz his grade distribution is better.
I took this class during the summer and online. I don't understand what the other people here are saying because he provides a lot of great resources to use (a textbook, powerpoints with audio to explain the slides, recordings of specific homework problems, and a lot of other resources.) It's online and asynchronous, so expect independent work.
Only did Webassign, my lab, and the three exams. Couldnt really understand lectures.
This class is basically teach yourself statistics. Online HW, does not have any recorded lectures, you learn from powerpoints and an online textbook but then the Exams are in-person. So hard to learn math without someone actually teaching it to you.
Reiland is like your kind grandpa who uses old tech (everything is in excel), loves sports, and adds little gifs to his ppt slides. Class is super easy, basically all computation, exams are also easy, prof is very responsive w email and helpful in office hours. I've emailed him after midnight and he responded in half an hour. Take him if you can.
Took the class fully remote. PowerPoints had voiceover and were as interesting as they could be, imo. Dr. Reiland is accessible remotely all semester but there are also a lot of online resources provided. That being said, this class needs to be taken seriously. If you can do the homework, you can do well on the exams.
this class is HORRIBLE. seriously, do NOT take his 311 class online. the class average was failing all semester, it's all teach yourself stats. the class website is super outdated and crashes a lot. when i reached out to let him know, he told me to use khan academy. take literally any other class if you aren't a stats genius
Professor Reiland's lectures are hard to follow at times. Statistics are like a foreign language and his slides are all formulas and numbers, which are easy to overexplain or underexplain if you have never taken a statistics course before. Lots of homework that take hours to do each week. He posts many resources to help but tests are very hard.
Now, Mr. Reiland may not be the best at lectures, but the amount of help he gives in the form of office hours and recorded office hours is amazing. They will help you with each homework assignment (12 of them, btw), and they mostly break down each question, so it is easier to teach yourself. He also allows a cheatsheet for each test, best teacher.
Test are extremely hard and almost no chance of passing the exams if you are not good at statistics.
Nicest professor ever but worst class ever. He is so unorganized and none of the "resources" are helpful. Average score on exams is 50s and 60s because no one knows what's happening. Each homework also takes hours to complete and is impossible at times to understand. He gives 10% to final grade as a bonus which is nice but this class is still awful
He is the sweetest guy but when I say I barely passed, it was a miracle. Stats is a foreign language to me so I struggled a lot. Luckily tests and hw is equal but I never made above a 45 on an exam except the final which I studied for 2 weeks for and it was still a C. I would recommend this professor only if stats is a breeze.
So far from what I've seen in Prof. Reiland's class, the best learning material by far is the PowerPoints on his own website, which he narrates himself. I don't have to use any other material to learn other than those PowerPoints and the corresponding Webassign homework. I find the organization of his website to be slightly confusing, though.
I took the class fully remote over the summer and you get out what you put in. It's note heavy with little amount of things going into your grade (midterm, final, and 10 assignments). Textbook is required but not needed. All of the PowerPoints have voice recordings and as long as you pay attention to them and can do the homework you should be fine.
I took his ST 311 class over this past summer. I've never been that good at any kind of math but I ended up doing well in this class. Try to get good grades on all the homework because they're worth half your grade. He allows a full typed front and back cheat sheet for each test. Tests are hard but this helps as well as his review material.
I got really sick during this summer semester and had to spend a week in the hospital + got covid during exam time. I straight up STRUGGLED during this course to keep up because overall I'm not a math person. Thomas was kind and way too patient with me. He helped me keep my scholarships and do well in this class. A+ dude
Tests and homework are weighted 50/50. His class is hard but he is willing to help you a lot. He posts zoom videos to help you answer homework questions and will help you with any questions you need help with. Don't be discouraged if you fail the tests because stats is a very hard class but overall he made me enjoy this class alot.
He helps with the homework questions in class and is always willing to help students. The class is weighted 50/50 on test and homework. Lots of review questions/practices for the tests, though they are difficult. You do get to bring in a single cheat sheet in for tests so the powerpoints help when making them.
Prof Reiland is a great professor and he cares about his students. He goes over homework and test material in class and will help you with whatever you ask. The class material is just very hard. Be willing to work hard in this class if you want to do well, and Reiland will help you. You will fail the tests if you don't study or know the material.
Professor Reiland is very helpful and is caring to all his students. However, his lectures can feel like a very long time because stat is not exactly interesting to a lot of people. Homework can be difficult but can definitely help your overall grade. The practice he provides for exams is very good.
terrible
12 HW and 3 exams counting the final. Lots of resources and detailed explanations to help answer questions on HW. Most problems can be solved with a little bit of math, graphing calculator, or stat crunch. Use his PowerPoints on his website (not on Moodle) and office hour zooms on Moodle to do HW. Overall good professor.
Professor Reiland is very caring and helpful outside of class. However, his teaching methods are very outdated and boring. Even simple topics sound confusing. He does homework through WebAssign and they take FOREVER to complete and get ready to get stuck on the homework for hours. Get prepared to teach yourself. Overall awful class.
Professor Reiland was truly a great guy and you could tell he cared about what he taught. I feel bad he has to teach one of the hardest classes in college because he's such a good professor. As long as you do all of your work and try on all of the exams he won't fail you overall he's a great guy and professor and accepts late work.
Reilend is an OK professor. His lectures are pretty boring and we didn't do any practice questions until there was about a month left of class. The only practice you could do was the homework which was a lot of work in spreadsheets, which is useful to know, but questions on the test were nothing like the homework.
It's stat class, of course it's boring, but Tom is a really sweet guy who loves statistics and cares about his student's success. The tests are hard, but they're not worth a lot. Do the HW!! It's worth a lot and will save ur grade. Also, go to zoom office hours, he records them and walks you step by step through ur hw ?'s.
Dr. Reiland is very nice and respectful towards students. Show up to class, ask questions, take notes and you'll do fine. His homework assignments will be difficult from week to week, but the course pack was helpful in completing them. The midterms were good but the final exam was a challenge, so study extensively.
Dr.Reiland is a really good guy. He tries to help you as much as possible, but stats is a hard class. I recommend him!
very nice man but doesn't explain things very well. weekly webassign homeworks are hard and don't reflect the material on the test, but he gives practice exams that are very similar to the exam questions. tests are in delta, you can take a sheet of notes with you, and exams and homework are 50/50 for your grade so be sure to get the homework done!
Professor Reiland is very sweet and will answer all your questions, but doesn't teach the material well. Weekly webassign hw, is kind of difficult to finish but he provides extensions and uploads videos on how to complete some of them. The tests are nothing like the hw or practice he gives. Do good on the hw, because it counts for a lot!!
Reiland is a great person, but not so much as a prof. This is a class you will have to learn on your own. He skips the foundations for each unit and jumps right into the advanced steps for such. Exams and HW will make up basically your entire grade and the exams get much harder and harder as the class progresses.
Thomas Reiland is an amazing teacher. Unfortunately his lectures and website are not as helpful as you think. Do his practice exams and you will be fine. He gives extra points at the end of the semester for hard work so make sure to reach out. Homework is 40% or your grade, exams are 50% and tophats were 10% so basically a 50/50 split.
Really nice guy! He's always willing to help and gives you lots of resources to prepare for exams. The real-life examples he uses in the lectures help make the class more interesting. Definitely do the practice exams he posts on WebAssign! They have questions from past exams and are really helpful.
He's a nice guy who is accessible for questions but other than that this class is not easy. Lectures are very outdated and webassign homework does not align to content on the exams. Get ready to teach yourself most of the content.
Professor Reiland is great person, but doesn't teach the material well. Weekly webassign hw, is kind of difficult to finish but he provides extensions and uploads videos on how to complete some of them. The tests are nothing like the hw or practice he gives. Do good on the hw, because it counts for a lot!! Exams are extremely hard.
Loved Professor Reiland. Lectures were a bit of a bore at times but he covered the exact material that is covered on the tests, homeworks were a bit tedious at times but not too difficult. His website outlines everything you need to know for the homeworks and tests which was also very helpful.
He is a great and compassionate professor who truly cares about his students. He granted me multiple extensions on HW during the 5-week course. That being said, the tests are nothing like the HW (which takes hours to do), thus it throws you off. Do the practice exams. HW+worksheets count for more than 50%. He takes a while getting to the point too.
Dr. Reiland is passionate about statistics, explains the material well, and wants everyone who puts in effort to succeed. Less than 40% of your grade comes from tests, so constant participation will get you far in this class. He also allows a cheat sheet on exams. Everything you need to study for this class is on the class website and WebAssign.
He seems like a nice guy but he is a terrible teacher. I have taken a Statistics class previously and his method of teaching is so backwards that I actually understood the material LESS after sitting in his lectures. I am glad that the lectures were not required because if I had to listen to him attempt to teach the material I would have failed.
Really good and easy with grading. We did have extenuating circumstances this semester that required exams to be take-home, but he's a good professor overall, albeit his lectures are pretty boring. In that vein, attendance is optional. If you have any questions, he will not hesitate to help you.
Dr. Reiland is one of those professors that knows the material so well that he can break it down very simply. For a tough curriculum, he was spot-on when it came to explaining concepts. He creates his own presentations, course pack, and excel formula sheets.
This class is a stereotypical math class. Weekly homework with a couple of tests and a final. The tests including the final give you ample amounts of time to complete them and you can take the tests anywhere.
The course material was slightly challenging for me, personally. However, he was super kind and worked with me to help navigate my scheduling circumstances.
Professor Reiland explains concepts clearly, but the course is challenging. Attend lectures, do the practice exams, and use tools like Unstuck study to prepare - it really helps. Overall, a rewarding class if you engage with the material.
