Best Prof I have had at MSU, unreal guy, attendance is not mandatory but lecture is worth going to because he always says what will be on the exams. Really genuine guy.
If you struggle with math, this class is going to be hard. This class graded on very few things which if you didn't do good on, it was hard to comeback from. Go to class even though it's not mandatory because he does questions that appear on the test. Professor Rimer did not care if you understood or not, to him that was your problem not his.
The ABSOLUTE G.O.A.T. That's all really need be said.
I loved Professor Rimer! He cares so much about his students and clearly wants everyone to pass. Attendance isn't required, but I would say try not to miss any lectures. I would have got a 4.0 if it wasn't for COVID-19, but I slacked on watching his pre-recorded lectures. Just go to lecture, take one 5-10 question quiz a week and you'll do great!
Dr. Rimer is truly an amazing professor. He teaches in such a way that is both fun and engaging and makes you want to actually learn more. He truly knows a lot about what he teaches and has a great passion for it that he tries (and successfully does) pass onto his students. Truly one of a kind and wish he taught all of the classes here at MSU.
After taking a different professor for another finance class, I REALLY missed Rimer. He is very easy-going and explains things with great details and examples. Although class could be boring at times, I feel like this class was pretty easy if you just showed up, took notes, and studied a little bit. I recommend him over the other finance profs!!
I take this class now and its supposed to be a beginners finance basically. Its taught like its meant for 5th year finance majors. Its really hard to understand how to do problems off a excel spreadsheet. It don't work for me at all, we need to learn basics before we get into the heavy stuff. I would rather learn the easy way than to not learn
Tom was not a great professor but this class is easy af. Refer to him as doctor will make him happy though he is not. Very few things you are graded on. Plus most questions in the exam are copied from the sample paper. If you are smart enough to understand basic finance, this class is the easiest 4.0 ever.
I took Mr. Rimer during the pandemic but decided to post a review as I suspect that he is writing his own review. I would give a zero but no choice here. The textbook is totally unnecessary, waste of money. too bad no other choice unless for honors
The worst professor I have ever had. Would not ever recommend. Expensive textbook.
just drop the class myself after talking to some other in the class. too bad there is no choice but him. he might care but just not working for me. study room just shows the answers, not working either
This class is the absolute worst. There are 3 exams , so if you do poorly, good luck! The concepts are not clear during the lectures and he doesn't ever explain it in another way that would help. he is a very rude professor, but the structure of the class is just .
exam is 80% of your grade. too high and too few things are graded. also too many exams
exams are difficult and tough. lectures are ok.
Professor Rimer is a terrific instructor. If you don't plan on practicing the work though, you WILL have issues. If you pay attention and make a genuine effort to understand the content and how to do stuff, you should have no problem taking exams and getting a decent grade. He won't do your work for you but provides excellent explanations.
I basically teach myself using the book i had to buy. Not worth your money but what can we do with zero choices
I would give zero if I can. I just want to warn fellow students that talk to your friends and never trust a word here.
I was super surprised to see bad reviews for Rimer! Looking back, he's been one of the best finance professors I've had at MSU. His passion is obvious and I feel like he was always willing to help students who may have been struggling. For an introductory class, I feel like this was an easy A.
it is a class that you have to take so make the best out of it using your own way. I echo, he writes his reviews. I write this review as my experience in the last semester was painfully costly. So I can see the last review as his own work.
Everyone on here is hating but there is a reason. Yeah, it is hard and you'll do fine if you know these materials well ahead. He's available after the class though, and is a bit or very arrogant.
You buy the textbook and then you teach yourself. They do give out some problems in lectures, but only in lectures. This does feel very unfair and unwelcoming for many but if you got friends in the class, it is fine. Would rate higher if they try to be considerate.
I am not sure why so many feel the attendance is not mandatory. It said so but the truth is otherwise. Go to class and pay little attention and this is easy af. The easiest A I will get from msu.
He seems to be kind to many others but I really don't learn well under this structure. I never write review online as SIRS will do the trick but I am so frustrated that I want him to know. There are those who are not social and need help.
Professor Rimer's class layout was very frustrating and difficult to learn from. No lectures were ever recorded so you could never go back and reference things if you were struggling with a concept. This became especially frustrating when dealing with portions of the class that were done in excel. Finally, your grade is determined on only 5 items.
I am writing this again as he rates himself. He seems to be kind to many others but I really don't learn well under this structure. I never write review online as SIRS will do the trick but I am so frustrated that I want him to know. There are those who are not social and need help.
Rimer presents topics with a fun and lighthearted twist. He is an entertaining lecturer, it's true you need to go to lecture to understand, however he does post slides and the problem solutions if you really can't make it. Only thing that stinks is there are few grades in this class, but he offers an easy 50 point extra credit book report to help.
Easiest A ever. Worst lecturer ever. That's it.
I get 4 from self studying and paying for a textbook. Where does rimer come in the equation? Annoying.
I should have waited until next semester and take the honors' option. Otherwise, just take care of yourself as he is not helpful at all. And no other option unless you can take fall's honors' option. Never take his honour option as it is a joke. period.
What a joke this class is. What a joke this instructor is. What a waste. Maybe the study room students should take over
Although i am not sure what my grade is, I do want to warn my fellow students. Don't get on his radar, he is hateful once he knows you and yes, he definitely plays the favorite. so if you are his favourite, congrats. I am just expressing my opinion and get the wrong radar. Then nothing works anymore. i almost drop to take it another semester...
He is the bomb, he is the star, he is the man, the only one in the finance department. oh, just kidding... exactly the opposite. I wonder where he gets his education. seriously ,where.
I ask for help half way as I am on my way to fail. He sent me to the study room and that's the end of the story.
Textbook might as well teach me. If you struggle with math, this class is going to be hard. This class graded on very few things, it was hard to comeback from. Rimer did not care if you understood or not, to him that was your problem not his.
Exam is too difficult and too many exams.
Class is graded on very few things, but it is still easy to do well. He is very clear about what will be on exams, and sets you up with the proper excel models to make sure you can do every math problem on the exam so exams were not tough at all. Just make sure to do the extra credit to give you some wiggle room on exams. He was also very funny!
Class is graded on very few things but easy af for me. He basically gives you everything so exams were not tough at all.
He is a nice, funny guy. Do the extra credit because tests are basically the only grades and they can be hard.
Loved FI311 with Rimer. Although the class was hard and your grade is decided by very few, tough assignments and exams. Rimer is a great dude and a good teacher, knows what he is talking about, explains material very well, while also a funny dude. Don't miss lectures and you will ace this class.
I went to every lecture so I thought I was doing okay in the class until I got a 60 on one thing and basically failed the class.
Not sure why Professor Rimer's rating is so low. The workload for this class is minimal, and the work is not challenging. He tells you what to study for the exams/quizzes (which are open book) in class, as well as going step by step on how to solve the problems on the exams/quizzes. Just do the problems in Excel like he shows, and you'll be fine
Come to class, do the work and you will succeed. Really funny guy. Open note tests and exams which are very easy to do if you follow his lectures.
I get good grades with minimal efforts. If you want to learn finance, you will not learn any. Wait until you enroll in real finance classes...
Good guy. He's funny and he explains the material well. His Excel models are helpful.
Professor Rimer is amazing! His quizzes and exams are take home and open book, open note. His excel models are super helpful. There's only a handful of assignments, but they aren't super difficult either. Also, he is pretty funny during his lectures and keeps them entertaining. Material is not difficult to learn either.
Don't read the bad reviews! He is so nice and funny and he really cares for his students. The content isn't fun but he tries to make it more enjoyable and engaging. He's the best!
If you want a professor who does not know how to use D2L aka the platform we pay for, and uses connect for everything rimmer is your guy. He is old, and should have retired a long time ago. Not tech knowledgable at all. Also not understanding at all. If you make a slight mistake he will not let your correct it, and all hw is graded with 0 drops.
Professor Rimer is a super nice guy who genuinely cares about his students. However, he is unaware how to use most of the technology professors should be required to know how to use. His lectures are good as he tries to make them as funny as possible, however, the two exams are very difficult even being open-note. Upside is there is extra credit.
He makes ignorant comments and is very inconsiderate. I had a concussion and he still made me take the final, which dropped my grade by 10%. I had a doctors excuse and everything, but he did not care. I was not capable of taking the exam, but it was either take it or get an incomplete in the class.
Rimer is a great guy, you can tell he loves talking about this exeperience.
does not know how to use D2L, rude af
hands down. the worst. 100 dollars wasted plus tuition
He does not know how to use D2L. I took the online section, and the videos were like an hour long each. VERY long and boring to sit through, but watching the videos is essential to doing well on the assignments. I probably would've been close to failing, but he offered an extra credit assignment worth 50 points, which boosted my grade a ton.
Professor Rimer is great and doesn't deserve the hate he gets. If you pay attention to his lectures and complete the practice problem questions, you should pass with a 4.0. This class consists of 2 Exams and 2 Quizzes along with 5 modules (HW). He even gives out a 50-point extra credit book report which can help a lot. USE HIS FINANCIAL MODELS.
Great professor who really wants you to succeed. He gives you everything you need to pass the class, but proper preparation is key. His Excel models are very helpful and he tries his best to make the lectures interesting. There were 2 quizzes, 1 midterm, 1 cumulative final, and 5 module assignments. There is also an extra credit book report.
Professor does not care about you or your grade. If you miss ANYTHING by more than a couple hours there is no possible way to make it up. He does not allow accidents. If you forget to do anything he will not change it. When I asked for an explanation of such AWFUL teaching policies he never responded probably because he knows it's so unreasonable.
kind of not nice
The rest of my semester was super hard, so this class was a good break. Pretty easy for the time I spent on it. I took this for a minor and it's by far the easiest minor class I've taken. In the videos, he goes through a decent amount of examples and real-life examples so that's nice too. Doesn't deserve the hate he gets I would say.
A heartless teacher. Does not give extensions even if there was a very hard thing going on in life or issues with WiFi or site.
Very inconsiderate.
Since it is not permitted to use derogatory slurs--I must say to the classmate who finished the online exam in 6 minutes (with no proctoring) you are arguably one of the biggest dunces that I did not think I could encounter. I must give my gracious thanks to you for contributing to the reason we now have a proctored final. Congrats on the zero.
This course was entirely online, there was a lot of prep work that goes into the homework and exams. If you actually watch the lectures and build his models he provides, as well as walk through all of the practice problems you can get a good grade. It's overall not too difficult of a course, it's just time consuming.
Ignore the other reviews, this class isn't terrible if you just do the work and check answers with other people. He's a super caring guy just trying to do his best, he has great lecture that walk you through the excel calculations. He also is pretty decent at responding to emails and explaining well. Just try and you'll get either 3.5 or 4.0.
As you could probably tell, you should probably ignore most of the reviews here. Most complain that they weren't given extensions, instead of taking accountability for not doing the work. This course is an easy 3.5-4.0 period. If you watch the lectures and do the work, then you should get an easy 4.0. I just wish not everything was on connect.
Probably one of the most vengeful and cranky professors I've ever had. Asking him to lift a finger to help you after he makes a mistake is like pulling teeth. The only time he takes action is to protect his ego after anyone offends his “academic code”. If you have the opportunity to take this class with literally any other professor, save yourself.
Punished the entire class after some students cheated on an exam instead of punishing the ones who cheated.
Honestly such an easy A class. Ended with a 4.0. Just watch all the lectures or at least make an effort and at least go through the slides he posts, if you do all of that the exams and learning checks should be so easy. He gives a lot of bonus points on the exams so it's really hard to do bad unless you don't attempt anything.
I'm not sure why everyone is complaining about extensions when MIND YOU everything was listed on the syllabus. trustttt me this class is easy, also he gave me half credit on an assignment I forgot to do. Yes his lectures were boring but honestly you could get through it without even having to listen to the whole thing, everything is on connect.
ok i just wrote the last rating under this, but I forgot to thank the baboon who cheated and had us all do a proctored exam. There's a special place for you somewhere. See this just proves that the class really is doable. Just try, but don't be like the baboon
If you slack and expect professors to hand you As, don't take Rimer. But if you're diligent and follow along with the clearly-defined course schedule, it's hardly any work and really easy. He wants you to succeed.
Ignore the negative reviews. Professor is perfectly fine and organized. He curves exams and homework. You'll likely spend less than 2 hours per week on his Intro to Finance course. The negative reviews on here likely come from lazy business students, so I feel obligated to help improve this misleading rating.
I'm not sure why his intro level finance class has bad reviews. It was very easy, maybe because I'm a finance major idk. He doesn't require that much you watch lecture videos and turn in an assignment at the end of the week. Yes you have to watch the lectures to understand but it's just like going to class. Also I love his style of teaching!
Videos can take a while to watch but class is very easy. Just make sure to do the practice problems and you will have no problem with this class.
He's lowkey rude
Can be interesting but he gives way to many personal stories.
Very neutral about Rimer. Nice guy, but boring lectures. Got away with a 4.0 without studying, just put every lecture slide/practice question into a Google Doc and Excel to use on exams since it is open note. Very straightforward and clear grading criteria, and he doesn't ask much of you. Can't say I learned much from the course though.
He sends out way too many emails and it's borderline annoying. He says we aren't allowed to email him but he can email us all the time. At the end of the semester I had a almost perfect grade but after taking the final my grade went down to a 3.5 and he decided he was not going to curve students grades even after saying he was. He's also just rude
The class is not super easy but as long as you watch the lectures and take notes on them it's hard to do bad. The tests are all open note so you can just use your excel models which he shows you how to create and your notes to solve most of the problems. Do the practice problems--they cover stuff that will be on tests and you can reference them.
Idk why he has bad reviews. The content was easy and he was funny in his lectures. The only annoying thing is the confusing wording for some of the questions on tests. His video lectures are long but they kind of have to be(just 2x speed it). You don't need to study; just watch the videos, take notes, and do the practice problems.
While he goes off-topic quite often and is a little slow for my liking, he teaches the content. He does a lot of practice questions in his lecture videos, which show exactly how you need to do the problems on tests and homework. A very easy 4.0 if you just stay on top of things.
Prof. Rimer is interesting. The online lectures are super long but you'll be fine with putting them on x2 speed, and he goes off-topic sometimes, but he gets the point across. Homework is incredibly easy, it's just a few quizzes here and there. Exams are a bit tougher, but it is open book, so it's not terrible.
I liked this class. Learned a lot as someone who is not a finance person. The class is lecture heavy but if you follow the tentative schedule he has you'll be fine. I found a lot of overlap between lectures videos and textbooks so I usually just watched the videos and downloaded the textbook chapters in case I needed info from there on the exam.
he is a sweet guy but the class is SO BORING. I often found myself falling behind and I also feel like for some of the exams there was a lot of information to remember. I dreaded doing this class, it was superrrr hard but not super easy.
He bases your entire grade on 3 exams and 5 assignments. He also forces everyone to buy an expensive textbook that you barely use because he creates videos for every small piece of information, in which the slides he uses are not available due to "people just using the slides instead of watching the lectures." Take any other professor if possible
