fun and informative class. tests are straight from the class notes.
Incredibly boring and tests were harder than hell! Don't take it honors!
Pay attention and do the reading, it's easy.
Miserable.
Very easy class if you go to lecture. He's fun and very knowledgable.
Tests are really hard, he tries to trick you. Lectures aren't too boring.
Go to class, read book. Exams are difficult, but curved. Go to office hours.
VERY hard class, but if you go to his office hours, he's very helpful.
A lot of reading and difficult tests.
Couldnt stay awake during lecture & nothing that I studied was EVER on the test
excellent professor, very into the topic and enthusiastic
Funny guy... very knowledgable/interesting. Tests were a bit hard.
Nothing I studied was ever on the test. Boring lectures, and impossible tests!
Nice man and helpful if you ask-classes boring as hell, tests hard w/random info
BORING Class Impossible tests
very hard, boring, helpful, great guy, great humor, tests incredibly hard
Participation a must; Pretty funny/eccentric at times; hard but curved tests
Great teacher, Honors section helpful, Go to class and take good note
He'll help whenever. I slept every class, read the book before the tests, got A.
class if somewhat difficult, but he gives study guides which really help
whoever said it's an easy A is on crack. great prof. but tests are def. hard
NO!don't take unless Antro. Major , test are impossible, lectures are boring
very amusing, rather hard tests but multiple choice, read the book!
Nice and enthusiastic.Passionate about subject but tests are stunning .
This is the most boring class ever. DO NOT take this unless you are an anth major. Otherwise, you will not understand anything. The tests are taken mainly from the book. The lecutures only help explain the readings. Even then, his lectures don't help.
Massive amount of info to learn, two exams plus cumulative final. Exams INSANELY difficult. Would NOT recommend to anyone but an anthro major and even that is pushing it
Very helpful, and knowledgable about the material. A great speaker.
Great teacher, really knowledgeable; makes lots of funny comments during class, for those who are paying attention. Going to class+taking notes+reading the book=acing the exams- honestly!
Really easy guy. Likes to talk and just expects you to read. Have some idea of whats going on and get an A. Always willing to help if u need it and will give clues when he's talking. Take the class and get the A.
really amazing class, an incredibly passionate and nice teacher. The exams are EXTREMELY tough. He doesn't give study guides, so you need to do your reading (which there is a lot of) and study hard on your own. Exams are tough, but you learn a lot.
really amazing professor. tough class, he really expects you to do the reading and take good notes. if you do this though, you should have no problem in the class. really nice and great guy, extremely passionated and knowledgeable about what he teaches.
class covers a lot of material, but he is very helpful. he says he'll test you on the extra readings, but you can basically get away with skimming them briefly. he does, however expect you to know a lot of details for exams.
Really nice guy, tests are INSANELY difficult! you have to know the material inside and out but if you go to his office hours he's really helpful. would only recommend to someone ready to work hard.
Hardest class I've taken at UD! But, one of best professors. Exams are killer, so don't take this class if u have a heavy class load or are used to breezing by w/o studying. Very willing to give students xtra help. This class should be like 600 level!
Don't agree with previous assessments that tests are "insanely difficult". The tests are fair and thorough. Yes, you need to study, but the tests are not constructed to be tricky. Dr. Rocek is an excellent resource and a friendly man.
Nicest professor ever. Will help you out if you're struggling. Is very well rounded in all things archaeological. A tough marker, however. Don't slack off in ANTH104.
very helpful and understanding. never wanted to miss class. Scan thourgh books and readings, study note and look at review sheet.
I felt that as long as you studied for the tests the class was easy enough. He curves tests sometimes. I skipped ten classes but still got an A. Most of what he explains is also in the book...and you are expected to know stuff in the book that he doesn't go over. Or maybe I just missed too many classes :)

Granted, this is a tough class, and you do have to work for your grade, but if you study and read (I repeat, READ), you should be fine. He is very intelligent and has a dry sense of humor. Take him, if for nothing else than to learn about some really interesting things. I first registered for this course w/ no clue as a last resort, and I loved it!
Awesome professor. It's really interesting stuff too if you're into it. Very willing to help you out and answers questions clearly. There are 2 multiple choice tests and a cumulative final, but everything is fair and from the book and lectures.
He's really into his subject matter. The class was a bore, though. He did his best making it as interesting as possible by bringing in food and telling jokes. The midterm and final were hard
(Honors Colloquim) Good man, and tries hard to spark some interest in a subject that people in the class don't really care about. Lots of reading, somtimes a bit off topic and he wont get to all of the assigned material in class. Read it all though, or the tests and paper topics will seem very hard. BIG Tip: outline the readings to study for tests!
class is tough. hes really enthusiastic and knows his stuff, but if youre not into then dont expect to do well. tests get progressively harder but the final isnt too bad
A difficult class, but he really tried his best to reach out to the students. He covers a lot of material, but he makes it interesting. He's really helpful, arranges great review sessions to answer questions, and even invited us to the lab to look at fossils. Cool guy.
passionate teacher and willing to help, but the tests are really tough. 2 tests plus a cumulative final=your entire grade. you basically have to read/understand the entire textbook, which isnt the easiest thing to do
Very passionate, good teacher. Tests very hard. Studied with a group 16 hours for the final, got mid 80s. Rocek is fun, class is hard.
knows a lot about and is very passionate about his field. lectures can be boring if you're not into fossils etc. but he tries to keep it interesting. tests aren't bad at all if you read the book (read the book!). going to class isn't 100% necessary, but helps a lot. he's rather goofy. nice, too. go to office hours if you're having problems.
I had a very hard time following his lectures. He's very scatter-brained and often goes off on tangents that have nothing to do with the lecture, completely forgetting what he was originally talking about. His tests are ridiculous, expecting you to almost memorize the book. For non-majors, I would definitely not recommend this class.
he tells you right at the beginning if you dont want to work, dont take the class. you HAVE to do the readings and you HAVE to attend all of the lectures. I did both of those things and i got an A, without having to knock myself out studying. you are in college, you should have to work for your grades to learn!
very nice guy. very passionate, and willing to help you whenever you need. subject matter itself is difficult due to the amount of material. not very interesting to a non-science major.. but a good teacher
It's true that his tests are quite difficult but it's quite easy to guess what he's going to put on them generally. While lectures are optional, it's a good idea to go. Material from the textbook is used to supplement the material in class on the tests. Read!! A really decent, funny professor, but a quite dull (and indepth) subject.
Rocek is a great professor. He knows all the material well. The problem of this class is the overwhelming amount of stuff you need to know for exams. He's forced to speak really fast during lectures to get through all of it. Go to office hours and talk to him. The exams are really hard, you have to attend class and read extensively. Not an easy A
Great professor, insanely difficult course. The material isn't difficult, but retaining 6,000 years worth of information is. The exams aren't bad...if you know what he thinks you should know.
I picked this class to fulfill a Group D. It's not terribly hard; Rocek tries to keep things interesting. This class just requires a lot of memorization and good note taking. Some of the material was pretty interesting for a group D.
Really, if you show up to class and do the reading, you'll do well on his tests. They're all multiple choice. He's also an engaging and funny professor. I've signed up for another of his classes in the fall.
Pretty hard class for a 100 level. You really had to take good notes, go to class, and READ the book to get a good grade. You actually learn some pretty cool stuff in the process. Curious George was NOT a monkey but an APE!
I took him for both 104 and 320 this semester, both difficult classes. I went to him for a lot of help, something I don't usually require. He was a very nice guy and helped me a lot. However, his tests are unpredictable and his assignments are overwhelming. He's a very tough teacher, with good intentions. I don't recommend taking him.
He's a nice guy and is willing to help you out whenever you need it, but he expects you to remember a HUGE amount of information for the exams. He is a harsh grader, but he is also very interesting and even brings visual aids. He is a nice teacher and he really does want you to learn. Two hard exams and a tricky 10 pg paper.
Professor Rocek is a great teacher. He goes through a lot of information but he keeps it interesting and is a pretty funny guy. He is very helpful if you go to him and he wants you to succeed. If you go to class and study a bit before taking his exams the class is easy.
Professor Rocek really is a nice guy and a great professor. HOWEVER, his class requires that you go to EVERY single class and read EVERY single page in the book. There is ALOT of information including full primate history and world maps. Don't take just for Group D. You should love anthropology if you're taking this class. Not easy A at all!
Ridiculous class. He literally expects you to memorize an entire text book for the final and gives absolutely no type of study guide or guideline of what to study. He chicken scratch handwriting on the chaulk board is near impossible to follow/read unless you are in the front row and even then your squinting. Dont take unless u like anthropology
I'm a senior, and I've rarely seen any class that demanded this amt of info recall. Prof is a sweetheart, but unclear. Final should NOT be cumulative! Students that love bio/arch usually love this class. If you don't, it will be really tough. That said, his handouts are KEY; use them to organize the info or it's totally overwhelming.
I took his People and Culture of the Southwest class (which is clearly his love). Our class had less than 10 people which was really nice. I personally enjoyed class, and never missed one. He gets VERY excited about his topic, and expects his students to share the same zeal. Better come interested or you'll find yourself miserable with the work.
Not bad gave tremendous 10 point curves on all tests and curves your final average at the end
He is such a nice person, but I would not choose to take this class if I could do it all over. His tests are ridiculous for an intro class! Your grade is based on 3 exams so you really have to do well on them! He does curve the grade and that is a life saver. Make sure you stay awake in the class to take notes as it can get really boring at times.
Professor Rocek is cool. Sometimes he moves fast in lectures but always makes a point of leaving time for questions. Definitely expects you to read and does test on info that was in the book but not in his lectures. Likes to make jokes and puns, sometimes even in test questions, which helps make things more interesting. Overall a good professor.
Rocek is a prof who truly wants his students to do well in his class. I enjoyed most of the lectures although they can get boring. Took the class to meet a requirement and this is the perfect class to do so for students who know how to study. Review your class notes and learn vocab in the chapters and you're golden.
Took Professor Rocek's Anth104 class for an easy group D class and it turned into easily the most enjoyable class of my semester. He is quite lecture heavy, but always makes sure to answer student questions, regardless of what they're about. Highly recommend if you enjoy the subject matter of the class.
Very nice prof but class difficult even though level 100. Hard to pay attention and take accurate notes on. His notes dont have a lot of content so you NEED to listen and write down what he says. 3 exams, no other grades. Grades curved. Up to 1/2 final letter grade in extra credit available. Do not recommend if just taking for breadth. Buy book.
Hardest intro class I've ever taken, this is not an intro level course. DO NOT take if its not for your major. I am an anthropology major and I am even failing it. The tests are extremely hard and there's only three. If you want to study for hours and hours and still fail an exam, this is the class for you.
Prof. Rocek is an extremely nice person but his class was awful. He is intelligent and knowledgeable, but it was far too difficult. The ONLY grades all semester are three exams, so if you bomb one, you're pretty much screwed. The exams are very challenging so he always has to curve them. I do not recommend taking just for group D credit.
While the content is quite challenging and there are few grading opportunities up front, Rocek is an extremely nice guy and will give you further grading opportunities if you ask for them. Its definitely not an easy A, but fostering a good relationship and open communication is very much your friend.
Prof rocek makes bio-anth pretty easy to understand, just go to class and take notes and the exams will be fine! The exams (3- the last was a cumulative final) are open note AND curved. His lectures make sense and he'll always answer questions. Plus- he's pretty funny. Not too bad for an anth requirement!
Really nice guy. If you like anthropology take this class. You mainly read the textbook and listen to lecture, no homework other than the reading, which means that you've got to do good on the exams, but he does give extra credit opportunity upfront.
Prof is great and clearly enjoys his field. Only grades are 3 exams which are based on lectures and the textbook (older versions will work). Attendance isn't taken but the lectures aren't posted to watch outside of class. No canvas page or online resources; you're mostly on your own. Overall a good class if you put in the work.
Great professor whos clearly passionate. A bit difficult for 100 level class but if you ask a question hell explain until you 100% get it. Only grades are exams which are multiple choice. He does record the lectures if you miss them but the quality isnt great. As long as you pay attention in lectures and ask questions when needed youll be fine.
good prof, just a ton of stuff to remember. he doesn't post his lectures, and doesn't always go from the book so it was a bit confusing for me. only grades are exams. he is very nice and is super funny.
Lectures very heavy, which is fine, but covers a lot of material in a very short time. Attendance isn't taken but for your own sake attend class because he doesn't have any online resources. Grade is only 2 exams + long sem paper. A lot of "required" readings but you can get by skimming or not doing some of them if you focus in lecture.
I took ANTH204 with Dr. Rocek and had an alright time in the course. He grades easily, and has a bunch of assignments throughout the course to complete. The biggest assignments are a mini proposal paper, and the final exam. Overall I appreciate him as a professor, but did not learn much from his lectures as they can be quite boring.
Rocek is a passionate professor with a good sense of humor, who does his best to make a boring topic interesting. However, his class is graded by 3 tests and nothing else, and the sheer volume of information covered between these tests makes them very tough to study for. As a class, midterm 1 and 2 required a 19% and 22% curve for the class to pass
Love the prof but the class was impossible. Only graded by three exams
Professor Rocek is one of the best teachers I have ever gotten the privilege to learn under He is genuinely a kind and caring man for all students. He is so passionate about his work and the material he teaches and it shows every single meeting. The class is a little tough with only 3 grades but if you study and read beforehand they are reasonable.
Really nice guy, always offers to meet during office hours if you need extra help but the class itself is awful. Just straight lecture and the only grades are 3 exams plus a few extra credit points if you spend 20+ hrs in the archeology lab.
Very sweet elder man but the class material is very boring & too much to keep up with. The class is graded based on 3 test, all multiple choice but still very difficult. He offers a zoom the day before to answer questions but refuses to give a study guide. Offers extra credit but you have to devote 20+ hours in the lab for a few points.
This professor needs to retire - only boring lectures. Grades are based on 3 multiple-choice tests. Students learn so little and do so poorly that he curves every test (as much as 25 pts. and many fail). He won't provide any study guide and refuses to use Canvas so there are no resources. Was put in the class as a freshman and was my WORST class.
Rocek is super nice and funny, and he's great about being available in office hours, but I absolutely hated this class. The material is mind-numbing, and there are only three tests so you have to study hard for them. He does curve the exams heavily though so I managed to get a B, but I really had to work for it.
Professor Rocek is an awesome guy and very knowledgable about what he teaches. We had 3 exams in total and those are the only grades that are put in. It is a lot of information and quite heavy.
such a sweet and genuinely interesting professor, but the class is almost impossible to understand unless your super interested in the subject. Professor doesn't us canvas and provides no test prep, slides, or any material other than lectures and long readings (wont pass if you don't read). i took as a breadth fulfillment and its my hardest class.
I've had Prof Rocek for two classes, in both classes he is very lecture heavy and uses the chalkboard, so you can't access what he writes outside of that lesson. He does follow very closely with his textbooks, so referencing those can be very helpful if you miss a class or need more in depth review. He is very accessible and cares for his students.
REALLY REALLY needs to retire this should not be a 100 level class id say its a 3-400 class avoid this class /prof at all costs my father has a anthropology degree and even he's confused by him contradicts himself and the textbook 24/7
this class sucked. lectures are torture and no supplemental work only three scantron exams. he's genuinely nice and a very sweet guy but the class was actually painful. if you care for your sanity NEVER take it, it is extremely confusing
He is a very nice guy but he was a very hard teacher to follow along with. He ONLY has exam grades. There is SO much content that you don't even know where to begin to study. There is no way of getting the notes you missed bc he does not upload notes anywhere. YOU. WILL. FAIL. I am studying for the final RN I am in tears. GOOD LUCK.
Professor Rocek is a genuinely nice guy, but the class is quite challenging. With only 3 exams as the grades, you really have to stay on top of the dense course material. Unstuck AI helped me prepare, alongside the textbook. Overall, worth taking if you're interested in the subject.
