All you can do is take notes. Reading the books is really not necessary. If you listen and take notes on everything..really quickly..you'll do fine. He's a nice guy. However, the class is kind of boring.
avoid this teacher if you suffer even slightly from narcolepsy. he will induce comas with his monotone.
He speaks in monotone the entire class and talks very fast. The good thing about him is you don't have to read the books, just takes good notes and you can pass with an A or B+ easily.
Oh my God I about fell asleep in his class so many times! If his the pitch of his voice had changed even once I would have been shocked. Straightforward though, and fair...when I accidently missed an exam, he was understanding and accomodating.
Anything "germane" to the lecture notes is on the tests. He is slow and monotone, but very knowledgable and helpful.
WOW! Don't take as a summer class. This was the most boring class I've ever taken. I didn't know history could be THAT boring. Fairly easy. He stares at whatever is on the wall behind all the students. VERY VERY monotone voice! Drove me crazy.
To be fair, he does have a monotonous voice, but he knows his material well. To pass with flying colors, be prepared for numbers and statistics (not Math), historical data. He uses them like no other prof. Also, know your reading material; there's plenty!
Interesting lecturer, good readings; get him off his lecture notes and into his research interests to get the most out of the course.
Very informative class and very straightforward. Be prepared to take many many notes. If you do take lots, you'll be fine.
An experienced prof, Dr. Rogers emphasizes statistics and numbers a lot. Be prepared for lotsa note-taking. If possible, bring a micro-cassette recorder too. Challenging, but an 'A' is worth it!
Lots of notes..find someone who had the class before and use theirs...No book reading required..it's all in the notes. If you have friends in the class work it out so one of you go each day and sign the others in and take notes
Dr. Rodgers is the epitome of a great man. Knowledgable beyond all belief but still down to earth enough to connect with his students. I'll agree, sometimes his lectures are boring, but you have to respect him. Awesome guy, and he would do anything for u.
Dr. Rodgers is very boring, and monotoned. I would however recommend him, as his class is easy to succeed in. He is very helpful, and knowledgeable. He crackes me up when he always puts his leg up on the table, and says "pretty much" like all
i really enjoy Dr. Rodger's class. If you are the type of person who learns by writing notes, this is definately your kinda of class!! He is super nice and really knows his stuff. besides, if you do well in his class, you'll know so much more than when you started!
Dr. Rodgers sucks really bad! However, he still is a person. The only time I enjoy his humor is test day. He cracks at least one joke and its funny. Other than that, he is too boring, therefore I almost failed his class.
He is boring, and he doesn't give time to write notes. Also he goes to fast never gives a break for anything.
boring lectures, but he makes lots of 'jokes' that only he laughs at which amused me more than anything! :) there's no nead to purchase the actual history book, however, you do need the 3 or 4 other books and you will have to read from them, but they're pretty interesting. i learned a lot and it was the first time i became interested in history!

the most boring man alive... i've read cereal boxes with more pizaz... he is a walking repository of knowledge though... ask and he can spew off mroe info. than you could ever need... ignore his study guides.. they are useless...
This guy is great! He knows his stuff. Be prepared to read 3 other books along with taking lots of notes. You dont't have to read the actual text book. He tells you everything you need to know in lecture. He also gives a study guide about a week before the test. These tell you EVERYTHING that is on the test!
Dr. Rodgers was a great teacher and you have to love his big sexy glasses!! Honestly he really is a great teacher. Tape his lectures and use them for your review on your study guides and you will be fine!! He is very lenient!!
He was a very easy going guy. Just go to class, take notes, and reveiw your study guide and you will do well!! Have fun!!
Ok This guy is the most boring man on planet earth. he is extremely monotone, and I cant understand a single thing he says. SUCKS!
Dr. Rodgers is a really nice guy but his class sucks! You definately dont need to purchase the 80 something dollar text book because you wont read it, however, you do need the other books because they are worth at least a letter grade on your test. Very boring, monotone, dry, and TONS of notetaking! tests are hard/lots of infomation to remember
Not too hard of a class. Do a good job taking notes and focus on the short paper that is due. The tests are very much lecture based and aren't really too hard. Overall, a good class.
this has to be the worst class ive ever had. not only is the class boring dr. rodgers is not a good professor. the man is brilliant but he can not convey his teaching to students in a way to recall info for the tests. you only have test grades and one paper, so if u bomb one test ur screwed. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! ull end up dropping
I sat in the front row and wrote down just about everything he said. I also studied hard for his tests. I thought he was boring, but he wasnt a hard teacher. Just take notes, study them, go to class and you will be fine!
He is the most boring man on the plant! I don't particularly like history but he just made it worse. If you can stand him the class is not that hard but it is hard to stay focused.
very smart professor... knows everything there is to know about history... repeats a lot of phrases like "**** as a skunk" and says the word specific like "pacific".. he started talking bout the pacific ocean and i was real confused... also, always looks at the ceiling, not the class... decent class as long as you read and don't miss...
I have never been good in history, but he made it worse. He definitely knows what he is talking about it and knows a lot about history, but..His study guides are full typed pages AND PAGES with NO line breaks and has open-ended questions. For example,"Know about the Batlle of Tippecanoe (Know the significance, the leader, etc.)" I dropped the class
He is very knowledgeable.
Very difficult class...hard to follow!
I thought he was easy! just know the study guides and stay awake in class... thats it!
the most boring professor ever! very non sociable, and extremely monotone!
reallly boring and really hard! don't take this professor his test are difficult and he doesn't stop lecturing!
Dr. Rodgers is by far the easiest going guy on campus. Yes, he talks and talks, but his test are straight forward and you end up learning a lot from him. He is also extremely understanding and allows the students to make up any tests or papers at a later date.
He was a hard teacher, who taught history out of order. his tests are hard. Make sure you do the entire study guide, and do good on the paper. He grades easy on it and you will need that good grade.
His tests are horrible!! He is not clear on subject matter. Nice guy, but a horrible teacher!
Nice guy but his lectures are sometimes unclear. His study guides are very long and unorganized but as long as you take notes and study youll pass.
Okay, where do you start. This teacher is awful. Very unclear, mono tone, boring"pretty much", laughs at his own jokes. how do u make a joke about history anyway. dont take this teacher. please save your self!!
Probably one of the worst classes I've ever taken. Incredibly boring and hard. Worst study guides ever. The teacher is nice but don't take him. However, I got low D's on all the tests but somehow pulled off a C in the class.
This was the worst class I have ever taken! I was not warned at all about him or else I never would have signed up for his class. The class was boring and his study guides were impossible. They were at least eight pages long, front to back, and all single spaced!! HORRIBLE CLASS!!!
Not a great teacher I would highly reccomend NOT taking his class
if you take this class then your pretty much comitting academic suicide. study guides look like the bible before it was published. impossible to stay awake. DONT TAKE THIS TEACHER. nice guy... but boring. i hated going to this class.
really nice guy, BUT TAKE SOMEONE ELSE ...EVERYONE ELSE TELLS ME THEIR HISTORY CLASS IS EASY and this on...not so much!!! long study guides and test! i tried really hard and still didnt get a good grade on the test!
awful awful awful...i have always hated history and he did not help at all..very boring and monotone i dropped the class within the first 5 weeks it was horrible...he is a nice man but just incredibly boring
i wasn't warned at all before going into this class..but save yourself. take someone else..hes really hard and his study guides are seriuosly about 5 pages long front and back and the font has to be size 9..very hard class
IF YOU PLAN ON TAKING HISTORY SAVE YOURSELF AND DONT TAKE HIM! HE TALKS IN A MONOTONE VOICE AND YOU HAVE TO BASICALLY TAKE NOTES FROM JUST THAT HIS DULL MONOTONE VOICE. NO POWERPOINTS OR SLIDES OR ANYTHING FROM BLACK BOARD YOUR HAND IS ABOUT TO FALL OFF BY THE END! I FAILED EVERY TEST AND GOT A D IN THERE BC OF THE PAPER WE HAD TO WRITE.
Great teacher. Dont take him unless you actually have a desire to learn and can have the ability to take notes and understand them. Dont let these other people scare you
really nice guy but dont take him unless you love history and and studying for hours on end. assings a lot of reading and tests are ridiculous
DID NOT LIKE THIS TEACHER AT ALL!! he was really hard. all he did was lectured. no extra credit, just a paper and 5 tests, which were really hard.
Dr. Rogers is one of the hardest teachers i've ever had..he does a lot of lecturing..so if you get lost you might as well drop the class..you can basically tell how the class is going to be after the first day..he is very monotone..and there's no homework..just 5 tests and a paper..a lot of reading in novels..and tests are killer...DO NOT RECCOMMEN
He is such a nice guy. He is monotone.Take notes on a laptop. His tests are kinda hard, and the study guide is overwhelming at first. There are 20 multiple choice ?'s on his tests, and if you just READ the study guide and not look up every single bit of info on it, you should be ok.
Booooooooooooring! Monotone voice makes him very hard to pay attention to. Study guides are outrageously long. I failed every test but got an A on the research paper and passed with a C.
This professor is very monotone. He looks up at the ceiling the entire time, which can be distracting, And he thinks the word 'specific' is pronounced 'pacific', which is also distracting. Tests are hard, study guides are rediculous. My first test is tomorrow and my study habits have been youtube and gears of war 2. i would not take this. peace.
Very nice guy, but very boring!!! Bring something entertaining to class. The tests are hard, but he is very helpful! Lectures are very monotone! I think he is still nervous or something...
dont take this class
His tests are 50 questions and have a lot of detail.
I hate history and he gives you a lot of info but if you take notes you will do fairly well on the test. His answers are pretty obvious for the tests he "hates ambiguous questions". I always fail history but without really studying just paying attention to lecture I got a B on both tests so far.
I took his class on the Civil war. Although I hate the civil war, and class wasn't mandatory, I still went because his classes were decent compared to others I had taken. His study guides were long, however if you google everything on them, you will do fairly well on the tests. Overall, it wasn't bad, however I would suggest looking elsewhere.
Great prof. for people who like history, but not so great if your taking his class to just fill a core requirement. Go to class, take notes, read over the study guide (it's huge but everything on the test is in the S.G.). Be a responsible student and you'll do fine. He's also very willing to answer any questions you may have prior to any test.
Dr. Rodgers knows his subject, and is a very thorough lecturer, be prepared to take a lot of notes. If you go to class and pay attention you probably don't even need the text book. Practically gives you the answers for the tests with the study guides. If you get anything lower than a B in this class it's your own fault.
Class lecture is hard to follow. Must be a good note taker in order to succeed in his class. Study guides are hard to breakdown, however test aren't too hard.
boring, but read the material before tests and you shouldnt need to review notes too much
Put it this way, he still uses a projector. Though very boring, just look at overhead notes, plus whatever you wrote down & if you are having problems talk to him. He will help you out! Not passing is your own fault.
Class can drag on, but is still bearable. Talks a lot, but knows what he's teaching. The books are very important, as many questions on the exams come from them.
Lectures for the entire class period and uses overheads, which can get boring. Knows what he's talking about and is excited about it. Study guides are hard to understand but test's aren't too bad. Takes attendance everyday. You definitely need to know how to take notes before taking his class!
This teacher could not keep my attention. He is very mono-tone so don't look for so much entertainment. He has dry humor about history and nothing he says is funny. His study guides, and notes are very long so you will need to study even longer for this test. I would suggest another professor.
I hate this class. It is so boring and his notes and study guides are so confusing. It is just pages and pages of rambling. It's like all of his thoughts run together. He knows what he is talking about, but doesn't teach it well. He is willing to help you if you ask. I advise taking it with someone else.
Go to class, read the material, take notes, use study guide and you will do fine. He is very straight forward with what he expects and how he teachs. He knows his history and able to pass the on.
Dr. Rodgers seems very interested in history but does not teach it very well. There are A LOT of notes! The study guides for tests are about 8 pages long single spaced. This class was very boring and difficult.
Excellent historical mind, loves statistics, and loves what it gets down to. Some may find him boring and sort of Millard Fillmore-like, but he teaches history the way it ought to be tought, straightforward and to the point.
He is a very sweet man. If you have to miss class email him and he will excuse your absence. It's hard to pay attention because I am not interested in the material and the study guide is very overwhelming. Test are impossible. Do good on the paper and it will help.
If you are a freshman that is just looking to get by, dont take Dr. Rodgers. However, for the upper level classes, I really liked him. If you do the readings and listen you will be fine. If you choose not to do the reading, the tests will be very hard. He is a fair teacher. Don't get overwhelmed with the study guides either.
Dr. Rodgers is a super nice guy, but I just could not force myself to pay attention in his class. His classes are all lecture, no class participation or quizzes. The tests are pretty intense. If you're good at history it might be a different story. He means well, but I wouldn't take another class with him. Bless his heart.
This is the most boring class I have ever taken, and I like history. Rodgers is a very nice guy, but cannot seem to make his lectures interesting. I either sleep or surf the web the entire class. (I'm writing this in his class now...) He reads right from the slides, so you could basically study those and be just fine.
Wow, what a man! The way he says "Indentured Servants" had me begging for more
Lectures are boring unless you enjoy hearing "Here and that kind of stuff is just what it gets down to" approx. 50 times each class. Tests are super hard.
This class is exceptionally difficult. Dr. Rodgers clearly has mastered the material, but teaches it like a 500 level class instead of a 100 level. Tests are difficult and the study guides are overwhelming (about 10-15 pages single spaced). The lectures are boring and monotone. The mandatory paper will keep you from failing the class. Barely.
A total Sweetheart but his class is difficult. Not the class to take for an easy A. But if interest in History he is very knowledgeable.
As others have stated, Dr. Rodgers is a very nice man. However, I am an A student and I studied like crazy for his exams and still got a B+. His tests are extremely challenging and his lectures are just that, lectures. No input, no laughter, it is tough to get through. He gives you study guides that are 16 pages in 12 pt. font.
This class is straight lectures. Rodgers loves the word "here." He will say it about 50 times in one class. Tests are incredibly hard, and study guides are about 10 pages long. If you are wanting to just get by, don't take this class. Because that's what I wanted to do.
Great teacher. As long as you are willing to study for the tests it is easy. I only needed to study for a couple hours the night before a test.
This class was very boring and hard to pay attention in. Rodgers loves saying the word here, i counted a 110 times in 30 minutes. Nice guy, but doesn't make eye contact AT ALL, he stares at the ceiling the whole class and his tests are long and very difficult, study guides are very long too. Do not take if you are a freshman.
He has 45 pages of notes for one test. so overwhelming if you haven't taken a college history class yet.
Toughest class I have ever taken! My roommate and I were the only two to show up for class and when I joked about getting extra credit for showing up he looked at us and told us that us being there was extra credit enough. When I asked him my grade he told me that my C in his class was great and I had a good grade... DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!
I am a sophomore &this class has been the most difficult/impossible one that I have taken. He says the word here every other word which is annoying plus he stares at the ceiling during lecture with NO EYE CONTACT. Tests are hard I recently spent 10+ hrs studying for one and pretty sure I bombed it. I am dropping this class today. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Great guy, doesn't have many assignments though. The ones you do have are tough along with the tests. Doesn't give much extra credit. If you take him be prepared to use the USI tutors for help.
Good luck trying to pass this, attended everyday to hear him lecture off of his word document and took absolutely nothing away. The study guides for the test may be worse than the class
Dr. Rodger knows what hes talking about and is a very sweet man. However, his notes reads like a 45 page dissertation. His notes and tests are often convoluted and its borderline impossible to take notes because he often rushes. He says 'here' CONSTANTLY and most students in this class don't even try to take notes because its a lost cause.
Dr. Rodgers has an immense of info he throws at you for each of his 4 objective tests. This may seem overwhelming, but if you just read and answer every question in the study guide you are guaranteed an A. I felt I wrote the worst papers of my life and he said they were great. So, I recommend if you want to learn a lot and have a challenge.
So Rodgers is a pretty solid professor and person. However, I will say I was constantly taking notes, usually for an hour straight, having said that, I felt the tests were not that bad. He's a nice guy as well.
He is a good speaker and is passionate about the subject matter. There are few complaints about his "lecture techniques", but nothing big enough that should deter you. This semester we had two papers to write (which were horrible), but the class and test are fine. He gives most the questions from the test on the study guide.
Dr. Rodgers is VERY passionate and interested in history and obviously loves teaching it. He is really good at lecturing because he gives you outside info about figures that are kind of funny. The 7 page study guides for 50 question MC tests is definitely overkill for an intro class. I didn't score well on any exams but the papers kept my grade up.
prof. rodgers is a great person, although his teaching style is not my cup of tea. He lectures off of a 30-40 page document that is in paragraphs. that right there makes it impossible to take notes unless you break it down. the study guides are the same thing, except 7-10 pages. The tests are extremely difficult. if history isnt your strength, dont
Worst class I have ever taken. He walks in, sets his things down and starts talking. His lecture is paragraph notes. Not only does he not interact with anyone in the class whatsoever, he does not even look at us while lecturing, he looks at the ceiling the whole time. Not once has he spoken to any student while in class. 10/10 WOULD NOT RECOMMEND.
He knows what he is talking about, and is very passionate about it. His entire class is a lecture, and he has lengthy notes on the board and breaks them down. He looks at the ceiling the entire time while he is talking too. His tests are hard and the 7 page study guide for a 50 question test is no help at all.
He is not a good teacher and does not explain well.
Dr. Rodgers, clearly loves what he does, and is obviously very knowledgeable in his teachings. However, the entire class is one long lecture, with no breaks for questions or communication. My biggest tip is to THOROUGHLY look over the study guide given, it's the entire test broken down. If you aren't decent at history already, I would avoid.
Horrible teaching style, no class inclusion. Straight lecture.
He is very knowledgeable about what he is talking about. You will need to study to do well. He gives an attendance bonus and has also given out a pretty generous amount of extra credit. It is definitely lecture-heavy. I would recommend going to class with the overheads printed off and highlighting and taking notes in the margins of the overheads.
Professor Rodgers is such a sweet guy but his class is extremely hard to pass. His lectures are a lot and he stares at the ceiling every single time. He occasionally interacts with the students. If you struggle with history, I would recommend a different professor. Half my class dropped his class which I would have too
Such a genuine and sweet guy, even gave me a extension on one of my papers! The problem is that his lectures are in paragraph form and about 60 pages long. He reads from the moment he walks in to the moment we are dismissed. The exam review is 7 pages of straight paragraphs for only 50 questions. Almost impossible to know what to write down.
He was NOT a good teacher. He doesn't make eye contact with anyone and only looks up the whole time. His lectures are on word documents in paragraphs, very hard to follow. His study guide was 10ish pages of paragraphs rambling. None of what was on the study guide was on the test. I ended up dropping his class, took an online course instead.
Always stares at the ceiling and will not make eye contact as he lectures the entire time. Talks fast and gets off track easily so now taking can be rough.
Professor Rodgers is very knowledgeable, but his teaching style can be challenging. Lectures are lengthy and lack engagement. The textbook and Unstuck ai helped me prepare for exams. Overall, put in the work and you can do well, but it's not the easiest class.
40-60 page long, essay formatt, word documents are read verbatum in his lectures. The study guides are 20-30 pages in the same formatt. Exams are 50 questions, wordy, and meant to stump you. I would not advise anyone to take his class, no matter how much you enjoy history.
Do NOT take this professor. No matter what!. He is a nice guy and seems very smart. But, has no idea how to teach it, he rambles and stares at the ceiling all class and never makes eye contact. Tests are VERY hard, and it's only hard because you don't know how to study. He gives super-long, confusing study guides. Don't take the class.
do not take this professor. his notes are 50 page long, essay formatted "slides" along with 10-page study guides in essay format. tests are made to stump you and are impossible to study for because none of the information that is on the test is on the study guide. he makes zero eye contact and only looks at the ceiling. I do not recommend his class
He's a really sweet guy, very accessible outside of class. But lectures are him reading off a word document, study guides are extremely long and wordy. I love history and tend to do well, but I really struggled in this class- it's hard to figure out how to study, but when you do exams aren't bad. Do well on the two assigned essays and STUDY.
Dr. Rodgers is a very lecture-heavy professor. Every day was 50 straight minutes of reading the overheard notes, word-for-word. I felt very frustrated and annoyed because there were only three assignments throughout 17 weeks of coursework, which felt a bit unfair, grading-wise. Zero extra credit opportunities or chances to bring my grade up.
