I think he's funny to listen to personally. Many call him mono tone and think he's boring. Tests relatively easy. Gives out ALOT of answers and help for the test. No real homework but reading a 10 page essay every other week or so.
Had modern world Civ. with him over interim...he never kept us the whole time (yay!), but was very monotone and hard to pay attention to. Overall I learned a lot, though!
he is monotone other than that he knows alot about history and everything else ask him anything and you get a clear answer, ask him the things on review guides and you get answers to test yes!
I like Professor Roland. He is very clear in his expectations. The homework all directly correlates to the exams. If you follow his directions you will do well in his class.
ok, Rowland for 202 is EASY..do the extra credit paper and you will gain alot of points...ask relevant questions in the review sessions and you will get answers to test questions. Do the review sheet and you will know it all...go to class, and you will b
He's pretty easy, not too easy though. He's not monotone, and is one of the funniest teachers I've had.
I have had 5 classes with Professor R and can honestly say that he is the best at UW-O. He enjoys teaching, and cares about the students understanding of the topic. Stories are hillarious, and he jokes a lot. If you get the chance, take him.
He was great, very funny. He probably put the rating on here before mine, that is something he would do just to be funny.
Had him for Early Civ, i liked the topics and he made them pretty interesting, good teacher, only hw was journals twice all semester, pay attention, take good notes and you'll be fine, good extra credit options too
In... Any... Event... I took professor Rowland's class and that's definitely his catch phrase. count how many times he says it if you get bored with learning about the bar-bar-bars... good teacher. nice guy. if you miss an assignment date just go in and tell him something and he'll take it.
Good teacher. Fair in grading. Tests are not to bad at all. Take him if you can.
Great prof. interesting to listen to, very clear and stright forward about what he wants done. His interem class was great. His 14 week class got boring a little bit, but overall a great prof.
I have taken this guy for 2 classes now and he knows his stuff and teaches it well. If you can't pass this class, you have some issues!
He is a very knowledgeable professor, who is easy going, fair and quite humorous. If you get the chance to take him for any class. He is great
A bit monotonous, but fun and interesting. Occasoinally made fun of self for comic relief.

by far the best professor i have had at UWO.
I had this class for interim, and it was decent. He lectured for about an hour, usually watched a video, then lectured a little more after it. Has a dry sense of humor but it kept me entertained. Very typical "historian" and gives you unique information you'd never learn anywhere else. Like the origin of "ok" for example!
Very easy going, lots of movies to watch. Tests are easy if you attend class. Chances for extra credit. Understanding of late work due to computer issues. Great guy, easy class.
Awesome teacher. Always on topic, right to the point. Helpful study guides. Tells you directly or impies on what is gonna be on the test...
I took this class for interim, so it was a lot of info in one sitting, but the tests were pretty easy and he gives you study guides and outlines of his lectures. Its an easy A if you just pay attention!
Interim, super easy class, probably diddn't need to show up and still get an A if you know any basic history. Came off kinda blunt but we got everything done we needed to
one of the best teachers i have ever had, knows his stuff, and knows how to teach it, i wish he taught more classes here for the history majors to take
I took this class over winter interium - he knows A LOT about history! He makes history interesting! Very easy class for interium - I got an A - print off his study guides and be able to talk about the topics - everything on the exam is on the study guide :D
Very easy and tests are a joke.
I've had him twice now and loved both classes. He's great teacher and gives you everything you need to succeed in class. He's easy to talk to and very helpful.
Great teacher knows everything and can answer any question, i learned alot, take him if you can
super guy he makes me want to learn more about history(i used to hate it)dry/sarcastic sense of humor, which i adore he is very clear on what he expects his students to know which makes studying so much easier
He's a nice guy that is pretty friendly if you participate. Doesn't ever respond to e-mail so go to class. I tried pretty hard and did pretty good. I think there were circumstances that made the class harder then it usually is so i think it would be good to take him if he's still around.
Amusing guy, helpful, liked the class even though I don't have any interest in the military (which is what it was about, took it because it's an upper level and you need so many credits to graduate so...)
Dr. Rowland is a great teacher. If you don't listen to what he's saying he can come off as monotone, but if you listen, he's actually got a very dry/sarcastic sense of humor. Very funny. Took summer class and rarely stayed the whole time. Part lecture, part movie and the movie was interesting. Highly recommend but pay attention!
Took him for an independent study. It was only 1 credit, just a paper, and he let me just get on with it. No timelines, no meetings, just ask if I had questions. Very helpful when I did have questions. If you need independent study, I would recommend Dr. Rowland!
professor rowland is a great teacher! doesnt hand out a lot of readings, and is straight forward with his notes and the tests, overall great teacher!! would recommend him definitely! is kind of dry but puts in some humor every once in a while
He is awesome. Just got done taking History 201 during the Fall 09 interim and it was a blast. You need to attend lecture and take notes, but if you do these two simple things, there is NO way you won't get an A. His lectures are interesting and he has a good sense of humor. Very willing to help if you have questions. Also great for Early Civ.
Absolutely love Rowland! You have to attend lecture and take good notes if you want to pass, but if you do that it's easy. Lectures are always interesting and he's a very funny guy. Definitely take him as a professor!
Loved him! i took this class for interem and he was my fav! hes a funny guy and makes lecture intersting. His tests were easy as long as you take notes and pay attention. Definitly take this professor if you can!
Very Good
Great teacher! He explains the material very well, and he is very understanding. You will do great as long as you attend class and take notes.
Only contention with this class was it was an 8am class. Did not use the textbook at all and did well. Most will want to supplement from the book for their notes. Either double essay or 1essay/mult choice exams. Easy writing assignments. Do the extra credit. Though his handouts, while useful were split up weird.
Awesome guy
hes cool and funny
great teacher and pretty funny
take this teacher
Dr. Rowland is a wonderful teacher. He knows his stuff and tries to make history fun for those who are not into it but using pictures, and other sorts of media. He has a sense of humor and you can tell he really enjoys what he is teaching. The book is there to help guide you if you like history you should be fine but if not reading would be key.
Dr. Rowland is a wonderful teacher. He enjoys his job and tries to make it interesting even for those who do not like history. He does this by using many different types of media to keep your interest. He also has a sense of humor. The book is a good guide to keep up with what he is lecturing on. Overall he is a great teacher. Take him!
EXTREMELY good professor! He is very interesting and will do anything he can to help you to succeed. He is very knowledgeable and helpful and every way possible. He is a fabulous person with a great sense of humor and I would suggest any of his classes to anyone, whether you like history or not. I have taken him twice and will take him a 3rd time.
Dr. Rowland was an amazing teacher and knows a lot about US HIstory. I would definitely recommend taking it as an interim class if you could because its an easy A.
Best history teacher I've ever had.
Great professor! He knows a ton of stuff. As for the work, you just do one 10 pg paper and the tests are essay but aren't that hard. Just know the stuff from your notes and you'll be set :-). I hope to have him again in the future if necessary.
Great teacher! Exams are super easy and lectures have an outline that is easy to follow. Has a very dry sense of humor, but is quite funny.
The best history teacher at UW-O in my opinion. Have taken him twice and will be taking him a third time this fall! Funny, dry sense of humor and always has interesting classes. Take him!
An amazing teacher. Entertaining and smart. He really got me interested in History again.Do not buy the Unfinished Nation though (very unneeded), but do buy They Way We Lived.
Entertaining and smart. He really got me interested in History again.Do not buy the Unfinished Nation though (very unneeded), but do buy They Way We Lived.
A lot of fun!
He was a great teacher! History is my hardest class by far, and he made it so simple to understand! He is not scattered brain and everything flows so smoothly. Has dry humor. Took as an Interim Class no class assignments which reg semester classes requires. Take this class!!! Last exam he gave free 21 questions (out of 50) b/c we ran out of time :)
One of my favorite professors! I had him for winterim, and it was an easy A if you studied. He hosted reviews before the exams which he handed out extra credit for if you went. I would definitely recommend him to anyone. He is kind of monotone, but overall made the class enjoyable and interesting!
Loved this professor! Though he's old he uses some humor to make lecture more interesting. I learned a lot of our nation's history, take him!
Prof Rowland is my favorite professor to date. It was the highlight of my week to listen to him talk about Wisconsin history. He really knows his stuff! I never read the Wisconsin History book and got high A's on all my tests. This is a lecture class, take good notes and plan your essays before hand and you will be fine. He is hilarious.
Great guy. He is funny. I am glad i had him!
Way good at his job
Not a hard class, show up and take notes and study a decent amount and expect an AB
Class is super easy, as long as you attend! It comes with a book, but you do not need to read it in order to pass the class. There are 3 exams that are easy if you pay attention in class and random book assignments that are pretty self explanatory as well. Professor Rowland has a dry sense of humor, but he is super funny once you understand it.
To say Dr. Rowland is simply good looking is a understatement and frankly and insult to the man. Not only is he easy on the eyes, he is also a dedicated intellectual. Some might call him a Renaissance man... No argument there... others might call him a hero... again no argument.. He is in all honesty a great teacher and very enjoyable to learn from
Rowland is a great professor , who really knows his stuff. He does lecture a lot, but I enjoy it. He has little ways of spicing up his lecture. Overall a great , quirky professor. Have had multiple classes with him, and is my favorite professor at UWO!
Great teacher, demands useful assignments and offers feedback. Tests aren't easy, but if you actually pay attention in class you'll do fine. A decent amount of writing is required. He's incredibly funny, too, so lecture is never boring.
Fantastic professor!
Professor Rowland is the most hilarious professor you will ever have. If you have the opportunity to take him do it! You won't regret it!
I found it a little difficult to write for an hour about what he talked about when there was really nothing to follow along with. Go to the review sessions if you get lost or distracted like I did. They help a ton, and you can even get extra credit for going. The exams were very straight forward and the assignments were few. Overall, not too hard.
Nice guy. The lectures got long. The readings were also a bit confusing. In addition, he has slides bashing political figures which is not necessary.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND for anyone who needs to take some History classes at UW-Oshkosh. He really understands what education should be about. He doesn't give you busy work. He tries to actually make you more knowledgeable about History (with a few life lessons sprinkled in). The atmosphere of the class is terrific as he keeps things light with dry humor.
Dr. Rowland is an amazing professor. He makes his lectures easy to follow with his PowerPoint slides, entertaining with his dry sense of humor and wit. Grades based on attendanceparticipation, midtermfinal (essays), article questions and a book review. Best professor on campus. Basically the Indiana Jones of history.
He was an excellent Prof. very clear, was a relaxed grader, if you put in the effort you will pass with a good grade.
One of my favorite teachers at Oshkosh (there aren't many). Returns work very fast, understanding, and is always there to help. Definitely recommend taking any of his courses.
Modern US history was easy and Rowland was a good professor. Don't buy a text book and borrow "The Way We Lived" book from a friend or split the cost. Material was easy, just go to class
Don't purchase textbook, only the essays
DR. Rowland was an awesome professor for history 201 and 202. You really need to go to class in order to pass because I didn't for 201 my first year and got a C. I paid more attention and went to almost every class for 202 and Got an A. It's that simple. Go to the review sessions offered by the PERS leader because mostly all answers are given.
Dr. Rowland is full of himself and constantly cracks jokes about my (the class') lack of intelligence and it's despicable. I come to class everyday to learn, that is the point of FURTHERING MY EDUCATION. In regards to the class you need to show up and write down everything he says. Also buy both books. However, I use the search engine Googleforhelp
US History to 1877? Fascinating, and wonderfully presented. Dr. Rowland explains America's beginning in a way that allows students to track the progression of dates, names, and places, but maybe more importantly, the overarching character and tone of the first 48 as they mature. I *highly* recommend this class.
He is an amazing Professor, I was worried about taking Interim, but he gave me the confidence to do it. He is a very funny professor and relates things to current topics like Jersey Shore or older things like Dudley-Do-Right. He was helpful and very clear and willing to help you when asked. I would take a class with him again in a heart beat!
Such a great teacher; funny, clear, and understands students. DO the homework thats assigned, its not hard what so ever but it does take some time. DO the extra credit. Tests are easy if you pay attention in class. Would take this professor for class again, makes this Bio major want to be a History major.
Was worried about taking a history course, Rowland made it very interesting and was humorous throughout the semester. If you take notes in class, study, it will reflect on the tests. Put in effort on the reading assignments. You'll get an A.
I normally don't like history, but this class was amazing. He brings a lot of humor to class and does a great job at presenting the material. He is really passionate about the subject and it makes it enjoyable. I took it as an 8am and it kept me awake and interested. Would highly recommend this professor. You can skip class, but I wouldn't.
Absolutely hilarious. If you get the chance, take his class! Rowland is the bomb diggity.
Such a sweetheart! makes funny jokes to keep class interesting and he is such a cute old man. History is not my favorite, but didn't mind this class. If you go to class the exams are easy. Don't need the text book! He likes to ramble quite a bit, but only tested on the main points. Highly recommended for history courses.
Great teacher, lectures can be long but they're easy to follow. Funny too! As long as you show up and listen you'll probably do very well.
Dr. Rowland is very funny. He has a dry sense of humor and seems to genuinely enjoy when people catch his jokes. The multiple choice parts of the exams are what you would expect, but he grades pretty hard on the essay portions. Overall he is a very interesting professor.
He is a great proffessor, and very humorous. He has a bit of a monotone so if that makes you want to sleep maybe you shouldn't take him. However, he is a easy grader, and gives extra credit. I would take another class with him anyday!
He has this really dry humor. Its a little shocking at first, but he really grows on you. I had thos class as an 8am and I havent missed one day yet!
Super boring and long lectures, if you don't go to lecture you won't pass, he tends to be very disorganized and likes to go back and forth in dates and topics so note taking is hard because it's going back and forth. Not very organized, uses power points from different classes that he teaches.
Best class ever.
If you need assistance, ideas for what to write a history report on, he's more than willing to help you, even if the idea is out of left field.
Absolutely loved going to class with this professor. He was really funny and I found his lectures to be really engaging. Only downside is that there is a writing assignment based on the reading every other week.
Professor Rowland is amazing! He is such a cute old man who is soooo passionate about American history. His lectures can be boring and a lot of information is thrown at you, however he does tell you what is EXACTLY on the two exams. One of my favorite professors by far.
He is a sweet, caring guy. If you go to class and take good notes, it will be easy. He has extra credit and gives enough time for essay exams. He doesn't take away a choice for the essays, eventhough he says he will.
I remember the first time I took one of his classes I was like oh boy this is going to be boring...(he has a monotone voice), however after having him the first time, I realized how wrong I was. He clearly states what he is looking for and is willing to change things if necessary. His style is perfect for me, and dry humor is the best.
You will have to listen to lecture and do his reading assignments, but this and all Rowland's classes are very easy if you can do that. You can get away with missing the occasional class, but his lectures are usually very good. He's extremely knowledgeable and cares a lot about his classes. He's also very approachable! Take Rowland's classes!!
Awesome guy. There are weekly/ bi weekly assignments that need to get done, but they are more for your benefit because they are extra points. Dry humor and its funny. Only book you NEED is The Way We Lived. I never used the textbooks. Go to the SI sessions. They are helpful
For the most part he is an easy grader and makes class fun and interesting.
He is lecture heavy but it always tries to keep it interesting. He is very outgoing and tries to hype up the topic. He's pretty funny. Overall a good professor.
You can tell he is very passionate about teaching History and it makes his lectures more interesting. There are a lot of reading assignments but they aren't a lot of work and he is an easy grader! Go to class and you'll get an A for sure!
He is the sweetest man ever. You can tell he LOVES history, I think he is retiring soon, but he tells you exactly what he wants on the homework questions and if you pay attention even remotely in class and go to SI you should get a B
Very easy class. Questions on the test are right from the powerpoint. And or the video you watch.
Professor Rowland is very knowledgable in what he teaches, yet the lectures are extremely boring but he tries to keep everyone awake. He has a good sense of humor and the homework is not hard at all. The SI student actually helps with the exam review a lot more than he does. Con : do not know what to write for notes since his are short and broad
Professor Rowland is a really nice guy. As long as you go to class and take good notes based on what he says, you should be fine. Although the class is boring at times, Professor Rowland tries to make it enjoyable with his humor. You do get reading assignments but they are simple. Go to the SI Exam reviews before each test, they are very helpful.
Great older guy that is informative, funny, and overall a great professor. Tests are hard if you don't go to class
Honestly one of the best professors I've had. He's clear with expectations and lectures questions right from the exam. I did go to SI before the exams because it was really helpful and the instructor also led right off the exam. If you go to class, take notes, and attend a few reviews, easy A
