He makes the class interesting...cares about students and is very helpful if you need points cleared up. Nice professor...pretty easy midterms (be more careful on the final). Professor Scanlon is seriously hot. Who wouldn't love a British babe.
An overall great professor, who makes witty jokes few truly appreciate. Considering it's a boring subject, he tries his best to make it interesting. Class was not very difficult at all.
Its a pretty easy course but he goes a bit fast sometimes.
Very interesting, fun to listen to. To the comment below: yes, British people are hot.
Scanlon is HOT!
professor scanlon is the hottest man alive. by the way, he isn't british. but anyway, he makes going to class worthwhile because he is so damn cute. the class isn't too bad, either. not easy, not hard. i want to get to know him a little better, if you know what i mean.
He's not an inately bad prof, persay- he is just completely above the level of most of his students...except for those who take 16A when they should be in 53... all in all he's incapable of actually explaining, and it makes the class really hard for those of us berkeley students who arent born math geniuses
He is an alright teahcer, sometimes goes too fast in lec.
Prof. Scanlon is a total babe. And his teaching methods aren't bad either. All in all, he's a friendly guy who genuinely wants us to understand the concepts presented in class. *sigh* and that darn bow tie..
love love LOVE the bowtie - I'm sad when he wears a regular one. He gets excited - his enthusiasm for the subject makes it less boring than it has to. He has a weird way of talking, and it's hard to understand/pay attention sometimes, but other than that he's very cool.
Scanlon is really cute and sweet, and looks so hot in his bowtie!!!
If you ever take 16A, be sure to take Scanlon! Yes, his lectures are really boring and you will probably fall asleep every time, but the great part is, you don't need to go to class to get an A. You can drop one midterm! (there are only two) and you can also drop one quiz. He is very fair and very easy, along with just being a good guy.
Pretty easy class but lectures are pointless. Scanlon, however, is adorable.

sucks
class is fairly easy. tests and midterms are somewhat difficult. great person, and very helpful. lectures very boring. be prepared to study by yourself if your GSI sucks.
Scanlon is a cute professor, but his lectures are unfortunately boring and he looks a bit mean when off class hrs.
No one goes to lecture, you must know why. It is sooo boring. At first, his "English" accent kept me awake, but that did not last long. There is hw, but it is not collected. The first midterm was really easy. The second, hard. The final, extremely hard.
I took AP calculus in high school and took this class anyway because I had a horrible teacher. Scanlon did not turn out to be any better. I would say he was worse. When I went to lecture (I made myself go once a week), I would leave more confused than when I came in. I relied entirely on the book. Horrible teacher. Hard tests as well.
boring class and hard to understand if you're not already a math whiz. he teaches all of it with a powerpoint presentation! first midterm was easy and the second one was super hard! final was also hard.
This guy was okay. I like math alot and having him as a teacher was pretty fun. Yeah sometimes he got boring but time went by pretty fast. The GSI don't help much, pretty boring sections. The first midterm was easy the second one a little bit harder and the final, well I don't think any1 (not even those brainny asians) did well.
a good instructor. i went to all the lectures and enjoyed them. but, i found the material incredibly difficult and frustrating. i'm not a math major, but i think i'm smart. still, at the end of the semester i was surprised at how good my grade was (a B-).
Scanlon's cute, but SO BORING. He's also very awkward up on stage when he teaches. I don't remember any of the math he taught, but I remember weird conversations about his bow-tie and why student-teacher relationships don't work. What a freak! DON'T GO TO OFFICE HRS. He doesn't help. See a GSI.
The homework assigned was easy and my GSI (Ron) was super helpful, but the midterms + final were HARD. Scanlon put questions that weren't even mentioned in the text or lecture on tests. Boring lecturer. Going to the lectures didn't even help. Ended up getting a B-!
British man with two fair midterms. I still am convinced he wrote his final for Math 1000C and not Math 16A. Some of the questions were just impossible in the alloted time. Going to lecture is a waste of time because his examples are too easy to help you on the hw.
Extremely helpful and clear...willing to explain in details until you fully grasp the concept.
midterms were really easy, quizzes were really easy, but the final was just randomly hard. His lectures were my nap time.
There is absolutely no point in going to lecture. I recommend learning from the book and going to GSI office hours. Quizzes depend on GSI, but usually they are just questions from the homework. For midterms and final study the past tests and all homework problems and you will be fine.
Do not be swayed into thinking that Scanlon is a good teacher simply by the comments made by girls who gush over his appearance. There are many reasons he is a terrible teacher. In his 16A class he used powerpoint to teach the class, his slides constantly had errors in them, his tests went above and beyond the material you learned in class.
He is extremely egotistical, and basically screwed most of the class over for the first midterm-he didnt even post homework answers- there was no way to tell whether we were doing the homework right or not. Avoid, unless you have taken Calculus BC before, and already know the concepts. Your not gonna get much from him-his lectures suck!
The worst professor I had. Completely disorganized. Students like him but he makes midterms and finals go over and beyond the material in class. Homeworks are challenging Not a good explainer. This Prof has taught Set Theory too many times. He should stop. He overloads you with new material during the last week.
if you want to learn calculus, run away from scanlon. he speaks in numbers and is incapable of explaining simple concepts. he overcomplicates matters when a few simple words will do. seems like a nice guy, but needs to take some rigorous classes in teaching
Learned how to do this class just by reading the book. Lectures were pretty useless; they made the material more complicated than the book does. So just read the book and do the examples there. And go to section and learn those practice problems. Take w/ another teacher if possible, many found Scanlon to be much harder than the other teacher.
professor scanlon is a nice guy but a terrible math 16b lecturer. the book is rather easy to understand but scanlon is not. if i had to take this class again i would skip all lectures and just read the book.
Scanlon is the WORST professor I've ever had. He is NOT helpful during office hours, teaches by using powerpoint, and makes his test absolutely IMPOSSIBLE. DON'T take this class unless you are a math genius, it is IMPOSSIBLE to get an A. I got an A in 16a but a C- in this class. He is pathetic.
nice guy. Seems to like the students. But not good at lecturing. Some of his tests are out of the blue.
I'm not sure what the other ppl are talking about. Sure, I wouldn't give Scanlon the teacher of the year award, but he wasn't that bad. Lectures were a little dry, but easy to follow, didn't have to go to them to get a good grade. Final was easier than midterms, and his curve helped A LOT.
As a person Scanlon is awesome, a wonderful person, nice and funny. He is sooo cool. However, as an instructor he was probably one of the worst teachers I have ever had. The subject was already hard, and he made it even harder. The lectures were chaotic and I almost learned nothing. Don't take any class with him unless you have to.
WONDERFUL @ first, but I don't know what happened. His teaching got very confusing. Only about 100 out of 300 come to class now-a-days. His weighted scale is FANTASTIC though (:. It's hard to understand his lectures though. I have a GREAT GSI though! >>JEFF DOKER<< He teaches me all the material I know!
Professor was very good. Grading scale was very favorable. Hw and quizzes were really easy and final was a piece of cake as long as you reviewed the old exams. nice guy, great personality, and always available for questions
If you have the chance to take math 16B with another professor (specifically Prof. Harrington) take it with him. i had friends in harrington's class who said it was really easy. Scanlon doesn't give reviews before exams and covers everything in the book, Harrington skips sections. Don't underestimate exams, review his past exams as study guides
I really don't understand how people can complain about Scanlon. He's the clearest math professor I've ever had and he works hard to keep students on the right track. It's true that he's attractive, but that needn't be the basis for a positive review of him.
Nice professor. Tries hard and is always excited to be in class. Is helpful in answering questions, but not prompt to office hours EVER! Get to know your GSI's very well as they will help you much more. Tests aren't horrible but do require some studying. Nice guy but I think he'd be happier teaching upper division math.
Great teacher. Very helpful and clear in lecture, especially compared to my current teacher. However, the highlight was my GSI who was amazing. Scanlon gives review sessions before midterms and finals and everything on the tests are expected. Entertaining at times in class and occasionally goes off on a tangent in his excitement.
If you've never taken calculus before then you are completely screwed with Scanlon. My GSI didn't really help either. Highly suggest getting a tutor.
Not a bad professor. He is pretty good at explaining concepts and answers questions thoroughly. His grading system is good too (85% = A-). He has his funny moments also. I definitely recommend Prof Scanlon!
Horrendous. If you haven't taken calculus before then you're not going to do well in the class. He made mistakes while teaching that continue to confuse me. I managed to easily get an A in math 16a without studying or going to class. I actually studied with a tutor for this class and still do terribly on every exam. DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM.
One of the worst math teachers I have ever had. He spends all of class teaching you how to derive the formulas when you are given the formulas on the test. He also makes tests way more difficult than the problems in the book. If you are new to calculus then stay clear of Scanlon because you will be teaching yourself the math problems.
attendance is for iclickers, but the class was webcasted as well
Not a good lecturer. Some exam problems were way harder than any homework problem I ever did or any example he ever went over.
I really liked his grading system which helped me pass the class. I also liked how his lectures were webcasted. Other than that, his lectures were boring and useless to what was on the actual exams.
Tough exams and a lot of studying on your own is required. But I'd be lying if I said I didn't learn a great deal of calculus over the semester.
Stand-up guy.
I thought his class was really fair! Effort equates to grade. If u study & make sure to understand the concepts, you'll be great. His exams were not crazy, it was usually always material that you expected to be there expect for maybe a few questions all semester long. Overall, I would say this is a challenging course but very manageable!
His lectures aren't the clearest, so I actually never went to lectures and never watched his webcasts. But, he cares a lot about his students and is always super willing to help. He's very kind and listens to feedback. And, he is one of the most accommodating professors I've ever had. He let students who had exams on the same day take an alternate
Prof Scanlon really does care about his students. While his lectures weren't always straight-forward and he would sometimes go on tangents about to how derive things, he class was way easier than I expected. The second midterm was extremely tough, but the final was extremely fair. Reading the textbook is enough to do well. Grading is strict.
here's the deal 1) if you took calc bc in high school you're getting an a in the course. i did while attending maybe 4 lectures and skipping all sections throughout the year. 2) the professor isn't great, but the expectations are clear. the tests are VERY straightforward (to the point where your formula sheet can answer everything with no thinkin
Pretty straightforward . Exams are just like homework. Very kind professor as well. Very happy with him. Not the best lecturer but that might bc the class doesnt go that much in depth. Your high school calc ap class did probs more.
His class is super easy. I didn't go to lecture and was able to pull-off a B+. Studying for exams, sometimes wasn't necessary with the cheat sheet having all the formulas and room for examples. Literally learned most material on my own the day before the exam. Tests super fair, and was the complete opposite of the rumors about 16B being impossible.
don't take this class if you didn't take calculus bc in HS! take your math classes at a community college instead and you'll actually learn something. the class is pointlessly difficult because of the professor and after lectures i felt like i hadn't actually learned any math, and was helpless w/ what to actually do on the homework and tests.
Fair grader with fair expectations. Stated explicitly what content/problem types would be on each exam, allowed notecards, pulled nearly every test problem straight from the textbook, and made himself accessible outside of class. Lectures could've been better but reading the chapter ahead of time then hearing it again in lecture really helped.
Professor gives a very clear guideline on what will be tested, and most of the material mirrors the textbook/homework problems. We can also bring cheat sheets, so no need to memorize formulas. Classes are quite boring and he doesn't do the greatest job in explaining, but you can just read the textbook. Easy A if you put in the effort and study.
I never went to lecture and never watched the webcasts. Scanlon is a wonderful professor, but his lectures aren't very useful. He makes up for his lackluster lectures by giving VERY clear information about test material and being VERY accommodating and considerate of students. Easy to get an A in the class if you keep up with the material.
I think professor Scanlon is a great professor. I had him for math w53 over the summer. While I think he usually teaches the math 16 series, he is still very knowledgeable about the content in math w53. His office hours are a great time for you to ask him questions and understand the content better. He goes into great detail when stuck on a problem
I was scared to take math53, but professor Scanlon made it seem like a breeze. Homework is graded on participation and his quizzes are very similar to the homework problems. Very nice person!
Thomas Scanlon is an amazing professor. His quizzes and tests are fair and you will be able to perform as long as you study the textbook and do the problems. His grading is generous as well.
If you're not great at math, his lectures will often just confuse you more than anything. He also makes you write 3 essays about how math 16a is related to your major which are just annoying. Just read from the textbook and watch Khan Academy instead.
If you want to learn nothing & teach yourself everything, take this class. Prof Scanlon makes calculus make absolutely no sense. His lectures teach you nothing, his homework is extremely different from what you learn during lecture, you have to submit db posts, essays, & do random unrelated problem sets in discussion. Worst calculus class ever.
Very confusing prof. Lectures make zero sense. Homework is confusing and doesn't match what he teaches. Quizzes are completely different than what is taught. The more you watch his lectures the more confused you get. Discussions usually make no sense even the GSI's have trouble. There are also 3 papers. Just watch khan academy and read the book.
Professor Scanlon did an excellent job in trying to help his students during a rough academic year. He always had office hours and didn't count our lowest grades in almost every assignment. The lectures did get boring but you just have to push through. For those who had a rough time, I would recommend going to the SLC drop-in tutoring(online).
Not sure if it's professor Scanlon himself, or the class being online, but I didn't enjoy class or get that much out of it. Lectures are confusing and there are a lot of unrelated assignments as well. Wouldnt recommend taking this class online unless you are willing to commit lots of time and effort
Math 16A is supposed to be the easiest calculus class offered at Cal. It's supposed to be for students not interested in pursuing careers in mathematics; however, Professor Scanlon goes too much into detail for what this class requires. He goes into theory and it confused me 10 times more. Also I don't think the class being online helped.
I have mixed feelings about Prof Scanlon. He offered dropped scores for homework/ quizzes and open note/book on exams. He can be frustrating because he offers confusing and unreliable study materials. The material on the exams looked nothing like the homework or the study guides. His lectures were confusing and overwhelming so book helps more
Prof Scanlon was super accommodating. He held office hours twice a week for 1.5 hours each and was always very quick at responding to emails. He allowed for a bunch of quiz drops, and the final was not extremely difficult. Overall a super kind teacher, and although the class itself is not easy, he put a ton of effort into explaining tough concepts.
Listen, youre not taking calculus because you want to, youre taking it because you have to, so you dont really have a choice. Online, asynchronous math with scanlon is like khan academy but worse, less clear, and less legible. Theres also busy work essays and a cheating witch hunt at the end because nobody cares enough to watch his lectures.
I have pretty mixed feelings about Professor Scanlon. His quizzes were kind of hard, but he was lenient with a couple quiz drops to make up for it. The homework could be hard but you have multiple attempts to get full credit. His lecture videos were often a bit confusing and unclear, but if you are willing to read the textbook too you will be okay.
This Calculus class was extremely hard, although I believe it was because it is online. I also heard that a lot of people got accused of cheating although they did not. He is somewhat confusing but work very hard in this class. I do not recommend taking the class online but instead in person, it might be easier.
Material is basically review of AP calc but his lectures with long explanations sometimes make the concepts more confusing than they should be. Lots of conceptual true/false questions on the quizzes. Whoever writes the mc quizzes needs to proofread bc there are frequently errors in the choices and answer key. Had 2 written papers for a math class..
While it was hard to follow along lectures, the professor was very understanding and accommodating to students. Anytime students expressed a concern, he was quick to help resolve it. Homework is hard and sometimes not related to the quizzes, but overall the class was well structured. Considering the semester was online he did a great job.
I have taken Calculus at the high school level and then took it again with Prof Scanlon. Although he is an amazing person, he is not as great as a professor. He overcomplicates everything. If you take this class, your best bet is to skip his lectures and use Khan Academy.
Professor Scanlon was extremely understanding and lenient especially during the pandemic. His lectures were very confusing and the homework format was very different from the exam format so I suggest reading the book to attain a better understanding of the material.
The best teacher one could ask for. This pandemic has been very exhausting and he was so helpful throughout fall 2020. He's so accommodating and has shown that he really wants us to succeed. I learned so much in this class and at the same time, I earned a very good grade. Make sure to study properly for quizzes and tests by doing the homework!!
I took this in Fall 2020. The lectures were scrambled + confusing and of poor quality. Tests were 8-10 questions long, get 1 wrong you have B- on the test; bad wording/traps in the tests as well. If you're stuck in this class, read your textbook, befriend your GSI and get ready to work. If not, DON'T DO IT! It's an anxiety filled experience.
My first Cal class was Math W53 with Scanlon over the summer and I'm definitely glad I took it. The grading system is straightforward and Scanlon's grading is quite generous if you show your work. Office hours are great to get 1 on 1 feedback on your quizzes (since he grades everything). He's very approachable and responsive so highly recommend!
He's the goat. Although he doesn't do the lectures himself, he's very available during office hours. I would for sure take him. He has clear grading bins, and he is very open to helping students get to their ideal grade. You earn what you work for.
I have mixed feelings about Scanlon. He doesn't seem to understand he is teaching what is supposed to be the easiest math track at Berkeley. The lectures are years old. This is literally the class for kids who don't want to pursue degrees related to math. He makes up for it with quiz drops and things like that and is responsive to feedback.
I hated this class and disliked the prof. immensely. The lectures were unhelpful and i ended up teaching myself everything. I ended up with an A but i had to put in sooo many hours a week so do it. Class was asynchronous for me so that may have contributed but I would NEVER take a class with this man again.
The lower division math classes at Berkeley are rumored to be difficult as I feel the Professors don't care, and it is a requirement for many majors. Prof Scanlon reused lecture videos from another year. If you take this class online, you have to teach yourself. You have 15-minute lessons, and the textbook. Also, beware bc he will suspect cheating.
Very generous on grades
A lot of drops and almost no homework. Test/quiz questions are easy as long as you know the concept.
My very first class, great experience. Uses old recorded lectures from another professor, but videos are short, digestible, and straightforward. HW, quizzes, and final were easy if you do the work. GO TO OFFICE HOURS! Accessible on Discord and Ed. Lots of assignment drops. Provides extra review material (unanswered discussion worksheet problems).
