Not always clear, presentation is above average. Bizarre test questions, you'll be saying "WHERE DID HE COME UP WITH THAT ONE?" If everyone misses it he will take it off the grades. Bring your schedule, you'll need proof you are in his cl
Mr. Shey may have been a good professor in his day, but it is time to retire. His entire class is about HIS life not sociology. Test are based on information never discussed in class. I received a "B" in the class, and I do not know how. Do yourself a favor and avoid this professor.
His class was hard. Two tests and a paper decide your whole grade. The final covers the entire book (and it's big!) You can't be late or he marks you absent and he drops after a few misses. I have two college B's after 93 units. One was from this class. Take at your own risk.
If you are a girl, he might hit on you, so watch out... the grading isn't very clear, AT ALL but pay attention, and don't miss a class, and try to take notes.
He is a totally fun, and down to earth teacher .The thing is he uses his life for too many examples. He says that his tests will be on 2/3 on notes and the others from the book and reading. Not even true, all his tests are based on the books, at least thats what it looked like to me.

Some of his stories keeps you awake and are interesting. His tests are a joke-hard. Just on the book, not his notes. Paper is easy to do and will save your grade with only 2 other tests. Sit in front and participate, and DO NOT BE LATE. That'll help your grade.

he repeated the same information every class. i got points off a paper because it was 2 lines OVER 2 pages so if he says 2 pages, do just that. his tests come directly from the book, nothing from lectures.

this guy is a ridiculous teacher... i learned nothing from him at all... his class was pretty much the same "lecture" everyday.... lectures consist of his personal views and aren't based on any facts..... LAME.....
He was cool, he just had to many personal opinions. Instead of teaching us about life and giving us stories about his past he should of been teaching us stuff that was in the book, because that was what was on the tests that almost everyone would fail, because of lack of information.
He is a very good professor and entertaining, which will keep you awake. ALWAYZ be on time and study hard for the tests.

I liked this teacher because he treats you like a real college student. For example, all he has in his class is a midterm, paper, and final that are based on the sociological knowledge that you learn in class and from the book. It's not that hard if you study and his lectures are very fun. He's not boring at all but very funny. You'll have fun!
Hard class. he didn't really teach from the book at all. the test questions were out there and was hard to recgonize the answers. alot of the class was his own opinion. I would not take him again

Dr. Shey is confounding. You have to repeat your sentences because he can't hear you. He asks questions in class about your experience but couldn't care less about your opinion. Tests are written at least five years ago so study only the book; his opinions which take 80% of class time are not on the tests. Aggravating in the extreme; don't take.
Thomas shey is witty, and one of those teachers, that you will remember for along time. class was very interestinh. he is very strict, so do not even be 2 mins late for class, just do the work you will be ok
Very tough teacher. I had a 4.0 until I took this class. I failed the midterm but he lets you replace it with the final, so you know what to study for it. I am a good writer so my essay brought me to a B. If you do not write or test that well I would not reccomend this teacher.
shey is senial and way overdue to retire. if you are excited about sociology dont take him cuz he will ruin it for you. he will not give an A no matter how good the paper. you are tested on material not covered in lecture or the book. he doesnt care about what students have to say. he just tries to show off by repeating the same bad jokes.
Horrible teacher!!! Seems easy at first...no homework, no quizes...but I took notes every single class and NOTHING that he lectured about was on the test...could not stand the man...he allows many absences and go ahead and take them all because you don't learn anything anyways...but DO read the text!

Funny... but strict... I got the only A on the midterm.. and that was by the skin of my teeth... Really as long as you read the text and show up atleast 5 minutes before class (he locks the door) It's not too much of a problem.. the no homework (aside from reading) is a plus too ^-^
Spare your GPA if you want to keep it up. Class may appear to be easy and he makes it sound that way; however, he grades off of what he thinks you earn. The paper due may seem easy and you may think you did a spectacular job on it, but he will criticize it and find something wrong with it.
The class is not difficult though the tests do not cover material from class lectures. I would not recommend that even the best students take this course.
Do not take this class if you have him for a teacher. You can show up all you want, take fantastic notes and attentively listen to all the lectures, but it is for nothing. He does not test on what is covered in class.
EXTREMELY HARD. HE ONLY HAS THREE GRADES THAT COUNT FOR YOUR FINAL GRADE- THE MIDTERM, THE PAPER, AND THE FINAL. HE IS A TIME NAZI.IF YOU ARE EVEN A COUPLE SECONDS LATE HE WON'T LET YOU IN THE CLASS. He doesn't teach what's on the tests. His lectures are him repeating himself over and over again about things that are related to the class. And he is the meanest man I've ever met. He singled me out if from of the whole class because I had my phone out saying I failed the test and to get out of his class. Don't take his class.
Hardest class I've ever taken. Do not be late to class! But all in all, funny guy and I enjoyed it. Prepare yourself to work your ass of for a B though.
i found him really amusing. i didn't think his class was that difficult, although i was a little confused in bridging together his lectures with the book. just attend the lectures and don't be late! and if you don't mind sarcasm, take him.
I sent an email to him asking if it was to be a little late he said " Latecomers are not permitted in class". I immediately droped the class.

the first day of class he made some girl cry and then teased her about crying, so it was pretty intimidating. After that he let up a little and by the end was pretty nice. His tests are hard, he is really strict about attendance and being on time. HE WILL DROP YOU!!! Other than that no homework, no papers, all lecture and reading.

Dr.Shey is really strict about attendance, but he knows what he's talking about. In the beginning I thought "what have I gotten myself into," but now at the end honestly I think he's probably one of the greatest teachers I've had. He can be sarcastic, and if you aren't willing to read the text book, don't take this class. Other than that go for it.
This was an American Issues class. Class is mandatory he will drop you after 7 absences so use wisely. Its a chill class, just sit and listen to him lecture, his lectures aren't boring at all. He just tells the same joke a million times lol. There are easy opinion papers due just 2 pages on films. YOU MUST BUY THE BOOK, even though u never use it!
i forgot to add, DO NOT COME LATE! He will lock you out as soon as class starts and not even a MINUTE after no matter what! Dont use a cell phone or you will get blasted on in front of everyone and told to get out! LOL Other than that, he's actually pretty nice!!!
Attendance is very important since it is College it is not High School. He is one of the best teachers I had, he knows so many different experiences to teach if you like to be late to class, and use the cell phone in class, this is not your class. This is the right class if you really want to know about Sociology, if you are open minded this is it.
Every comment that says not to be late is 100% true. He WILL lock the doors. He has prior military experience and it shows in his teaching as it is very similar to basic training. After the first few "rough" weeks though of weeding out those who do not want to learn it is a great class. Much of the tests are from the book and reading it is a must.
Dr. Shey scared the crap out of me the first couple weeks but after that he is pretty cool. Its important to be ON TIME! He is funny and has alot of good stories from his past. I recommend him! Just go to class ON TIME, do the readings, put in your two cents every now and then and you WILL pass!!
his tests are EXTREMELY hard, dont use a cell at all in class not even during break,(says its not his rules its the schools rules),talks alot about his past,dont be a second late to class he will lock u out,and he does random pop quizes to see who is reading the book, REALLLY HARD CLASS for it to be 101.I dropped him.
VERY HARD class his test are really hard too....what everybody else said down there is true about being on time. I would NOT TAKE THIS CLASS if you arent good at taking test....I studied my butt off and I still got bad grades on test!
What an absoulte p*i*k. All the other comments apply. Go to the batroom before class and if you have stomach problems that day-just dont go. Who actually will kick you out of class for using the bathroom. A terrible human being! Good thing sociology is not required to graduate. Stay Away from this guys side of the campus-He's toxic!!!
This class was actually very interesting. Dr.Shey sometimes tells the same story over and over again, but I have to admit his lectures were the most interesting ones I've been to. For the tests I recommend studying off the textbook not the lecture so much. Be sure to show up on time everyday. overall not a bad class.
OMG! Do NOT take him! I am an honors student, I've had hard classes, but this was the WORST class I've ever had to take! The tests are total bull & extremely hard! The 2nd one isn't bad but the final is HELL. No study guide, no help & its on random sh--. Avoid this class at all costs! hah
Be on time & don't skip class. Will not let you in class if late 1 min. Use a cell phone& you will be dropped. Tests are difficult. No study guides. I did get an A, but I think I must've had some help from above. Lectures are entertaining and he does teach subj well. Most grading comes off the tests. If you don't take tests well, steer clear.
After reading the comments he had I was very scared at 1st. But overall I'm glad I sucked up and kept him. He is a great teacher. Yes, you have to work for your grade. So if ur looking for an easy A don't take him. He is very strict on attendence. Just pay attention, read, and take notes. It worked for me, I got an A:)
This is honestly the worst teacher I have ever encountered in my life. Talks about random stores all the time. Thinks he knows everything. And his tests are completely ridiculous. No study guide or any help on what might be on them. I read the WHOLE book, studied my a** off and still got a C. Horrible teacher.
Honestly, I believe he is a great teacher, he is older, and has so much experiance and stories to share about life. He may seem harsh or strict, but he is actually very caring. This man just really needs to retire already. Whatever you do... DO NOT TEXT OR EVEN TAKE YOUR CELL PHONE OUT IN THIS CLASS. He'll go on to embarrass you in front of the whole class and drop you on the spot. He's one of those teachers that get sucked into stories about his life and that really takes away from learning the material.

All around difficult. I dreaded going to class. The tests are really difficult and he isn't very understanding when a student has a problem. He'll "suspend" you for a week if you even get up to go use the bathroom. He's rude.
Most comments here are correct. Shey is a harda$$ but extremely interesting and caring.I benefited from taking his class. Would not recommend if you want to get an "A". His test are all true/false and mult. choice BUT you have to completely understand his humor and thinking process correctly answer. Some pertain to book/some don't.

Mr. Shey is a good teache. He is hard but you have to do all the readings in both books or you will not pass both his midterms! He Doesnt give out hw or make you write papers thats what made the class much easier but the reading so kill you!! Overall he fun and his stories are grea!!

I'm surprised the ratings were not higher. He was absolutely great for my Intro to Mass Communications class. Super fun, easy, very friendly, and helpful. However, I put 100% into the class and showed up almost everyday, I missed like 2 days. So as long as you're a good student, you should have a learning experience.
Really great professor. He has a sense of humor and has had many experiences in the field he is teaching. He is one of those old school professors so don't expect him to be "easy" like the younger ones. Pay attention to lecture, taking notes is a must. Read the journal and text book and you WILL do FINE. People who complaint of him don't do work.
He's is something else. He is sweet at times. You read a lot. He does pop quizzes & picks random people but by the end he does it ABC order. His test are just different. His textures are confusing & honestly I have no idea how people can pass his class.
Okay ALWAYS ALWAYS be on time!!! If you are one minute late he gets upset and he will embarrass you in front of the class. You must bring your textbook to every class he does random checks. 3 tests NO study guide and one 2 page paper (optional) I liked his lectures but he does get repetitive after a while. Professor Shey is a walking historian and sociologist. He applies the past to the present and is very informative. I enjoyed his class and the class interaction.
Shey's class is one of my favorites. You need to have a sense of humor when taking his class. His stories are interesting and they go right along with what's being talked about in the book. The only bad thing is he gives no study guides and the tests are hard. I highly recommend taking his class.
If you are a procastinator and come to class late don't like to read,this is not your instructor. He is very knowlegeable of his lecture, has a great sense of humour all you have to do is read in advace before lecture i learn a lot from this Instructor he is Very helpful. Shey's lectures are useful when it comes to quizzes, tests and the paper. You need to able to remember the whole book for the final and read the chapter for a pop quiz. I would recommend NOT taking this class.
Very hard. I liked his lectures but he tends to repeat much of the stuff. Very strict on attendance, if you are late (even 1 minute) you will be kicked out of class plus it counts as an absence and once you have 3 absences you are dropped. Test are short but hard, he gives no study guide. If you want to pass make sure you know the book.Good luck!

He had very interesting lectures. Only thing I did not like one bit was that he did not give a study guide so you had to memorize the entire book. He is a nice person unless you disrespect him or show up late to class. I was in his last semester though because he is now retiring. He has major health problems unfortunately. he taught me a lot.
I took Professor Shey for Sociology 101 years ago during my very semester at AVC. He was pretty harsh on his attendance policy. I remember his tests being somewhat difficult too. Definitely not my favorite Professor by any means. Although his stories were kind of interesting, he didnt make learning sociology fun or enjoyable. Take someone else.
