Enjoyed Dr. Skeen's class! I am definitely more knowledgeable on how to be a better writer. He does take participation every class period so be sure to go to class. Overall not a hard class if the work is completed.
Skeen is a pretty easy going teacher. Probably the most boring class you have all year but its an easy A as long as you show up.
A good way to describe Dr. Skeen's class is guided independence. If you go to class you can get easy participation and he basically walks you through the papers. If you have to miss for some reason, do what I did and visit his office hours. You can make up participation points easily and he'll help you get back on track.
Skeen's class was super boring! I dreading going but I had to because he takes participation. I requested him again though for next semester because even though he's boring, he's a super easy grader and super helpful and nice when I came into his office hours. I recommend him if you want a good grade!
He takes participation ridiculously serious which can be frustrating, but overall good teacher.
I absolutely love Dr. Skeen. He does treat the class like it is kindergarten so if you want to be respected like an adult maybe chose a different professor. He is very interactive with his students and always gets off topic! But he is such a great professor and such a nice man.
Lectures are painstakingly long. Participation really matters, but if you miss a few classes it's alright. Not extremely clear with directions, so I had to ask my neighbors for help sometimes. He doesn't grade harshly. Gives homework almost every week.
Lectures are quite long with no actual instruction. Directions and expectations are quite unclear. grades harshly, but homework is a joke.
Very nice man, however he is unclear in his directions. After we submitted our rough drafts, he would have us add at least 2-3 more paragraphs and a conclusion before we submitted a final draft (I have never had a teacher who taught that way before). Personally, I didn't like his style of teaching but if you show up, the class is an easy A.
This teacher is very nice and friendly. He taught in a way where I was learning without really realizing it, especially through homework. He is fairly clear in his directions but if you don't understand something just ask him and he will help. Like most classes here, participation matters but, if you miss you can make it up in office hours.
He teaches like you are a freshman in high school. I think he has good things to say, but the amount of busy work and unnecessary homework is quite frustrating. He makes participation a pain and you have to interact in class. I would not recommend him at all if you are just looking to take english with little effort.
Skeen was not funny at all. Tried to make class interesting by making jokes but just wasted time. Lectures were so long and boring. The instructions were very unclear and did not give you an outline for the essay until two classes before the rough draft was due. The homework was not very helpful, but could be counted as participation.
Thomas Skeen is an exceptional professor, and one of the best professors for an incoming freshman. He goes out of his way for students, and prepares them well for college. Highly recommend!
Skeen is a terribly annoying and useless professor. The guy does not make progress in the syllabus nor does he assign any meaningful work. He only gives busy work and bores you during class. The man treats you like grade schoolers and is no way to have a class. Easy A but terrible teacher.
Boring, useless, and just plain annoying. Lectures are boring, tons of unnecessary busy work, terrible use of a class time. but he uses every minute of it.
This guy will drive you crazy! Cannot believe he is teaching college students. treats them like children, assigns seats, "lopes up" and does not get anywhere in the syllabus. Hated his class.
Kinda annoying with his "Lopes Up" but overall he is a really easy grader and a nice guy. Walks you through the essays in class. You basically write the thing in class and put it all together when it's due. His class is really boring but for participation, he takes name tags, group work, or individual work. Hw is 0.0 max credits so I don't do it.
I would definitely not take this class again. He collects attendance every single day and assigns homework that he doesn't even take for credit. He will lecture every day on things that do not pertain to English at all. I have learned nothing in his class. He's a nice guy but absolutely not cut out to be a college professor. Take someone else.
Homework pretty much everyday, which is pointless because he does not give credit for it. He's a nice guy who tries to make the class enjoyable, but honestly should not be a college professor. His classes were usually pointless and did not help with the essays at all. I would recommend a different professor.
Really good guy just not the best at teaching. He wasted so much time in class teaching useless things- he would try and still teach you on the day the essay was due because he was behind. There were times when the class didnt even know what we were supposed to be writing about until a couple days before the draft was due. Assigns useless hmw.
Dr. Skeen is a great professor, he likes to make class fun and you basically end up writing all of your essays during class time and just have to put all the pieces together once they are due. He assign seats, but its because he wants to learn everyones name. He cares a lot about the students and really helps prepare you. Be ready to participate!
He takes 2 hours to teach what could be talked about in 10 minutes. Such a waste of time. Absolutely ridiculous. Really easy class just impossible to learn anything important.
This is a very easy class if you're good at writing papers but attending class is pointless. All he does is give busy work that ultimately does nothing to benefit you and your papers. English 105 Write 3 papers to pass
This class was enjoyable and he makes sure to connect to all of his students by knowing you by name. A little intimidating since you cant leave early, but overall a wonderful professor.
Professor Skeen was one of my favorite teachers! He is personable by making sure to learn ALL of his students by name and regularly interacts with the students and gets to know them. Most of what we do is based on participation and group work preparing you for the three major papers throughout the semester, so be prepared to read up on homework!
Be prepared to receive HW about every class period and sometimes doesnt even collect it. He doesnt give Rough Draft feedback only whatever your peers give you. You work up until the end of the period each day! It even seems as if he makes up the PPT's as we go on in Lecture instead of being ready ahead of class. No time in class to work on essays.
For anyone thinking about taking Skeen, just know his classes may be a little boring but he was one of the nicest and considerate teachers I've ever had. I mean it was a push to get myself to go to classes (because he takes participation) but he was pretty awesome and if you did the essays how he asked, then you will get an A.
Great Teacher! Truly cares for his students!
Professor Skeen is an great professor who will tell you what he is looking for in each essay. He does not grade hard but definitely put the work in to the assignments. He gives you good feedback on what you have written and will definitely make you a better writer. Beware of the bad dad jokes.
Professor Skeen is a phenomenal professor and he sometimes will give you the answer you want but usually he will tell you "what do you think?". We watch a couple of videos like Peppa pig, the Office, Moana, and Friends.
Dr. Skeen truly cares about his students.
Dr. Skeen really takes the time to make his lectures interesting and interactive. He cares about his students and wants them to be successful. He teaches things that you will 100% need to use in other classes and real life situations. Great class to take as a freshman, he helps you understand that there can be many answers to one question.
Dr. Skeen put an effort into making students feel like they were important. His class was fun when you were there, but outside of class was the opposite. He never gives you a word count, but claims you should know it. He also assigned so much homework, but graded about 2 things. Don't take his class if you like clear instructions for assignments.
Doesn't tell you the criteria necessary to receive a good grade on paper. Lets you "figure it out on your own" as a learning technique.
Skeen treats his lectures like a kindergarten class. His favorite course material is Peppa Pig. He doesnt teach anything besides Karate Kids wax on, wax off. So basically be ready to teach yourself, not understand anything, and receive poor grades. His class is a joke, if you actually want to learn something, go elsewhere!!!!
This teacher isn't qualified to teach this class. He doesn't teach you anything except argument types all year, and especially nothing that prepares you for "writing for the sciences" I got a 0 on a paper for saying I learned nothing(I regret nothing). Also for a brand new class, being unqualified, and not teaching anything, he grades way too hard.
Skeeeeen. Hes so funny and I love this guy. But.... we didnt really do much for the semester. He played a lot of videos and we kinda just goofed off most of the time. Whenever you ask him a question, he answers by asking you a question. I usually left more confused than when I came
Very different style of teaching. It's a no technology-use class and the lectures are tedious with powerpoints. He calls it practice, I call it busy work. Never a clear set of instructions when it comes to papers and it was very difficult to understand his expectations as he failed to convey that to the class. Nice guy, but never clear.
All notes for this class will be in powerpoints. If you don't understand notes/lecture, get help because it guides how you write essays. ALL participation is in notes and he picks specific things for grading. He doesn't always say what. He has a monotone voice, but can be funny and notes contain funny clips. Get help with essays and you'll be fine.
This is probably the worst class I've ever taken in my college career and I am a junior. I literally learned nothing in this class. Every single lecture is just 100 participation questions he doesn't actually teach anything. Doesn't even thoroughly explain what are papers are on nor what they should look like. Definitely do NOT recommend this prof.
He uses basically uses only powerpoint and he talks in a montone voice. His classes are easy if you just do what the powerpoints tell you to do and get all the papers in. I would suggest taking this class because it is easy, but you will learn quite a bit.
Did not really learn anything in this class. He is so focused on participation and writing every little thing down that it cuts down on actual learning.
Professor Skeen does not teach. He reads off PowerPoints and is so quiet while teaching. His class is so boring and not fun. But if you do your work, you will get a good grade. Just very boring and thinks he is super funny.
Probably one of the worst professors I have ever taken. All he cares about is participation. He does not teach anything as all and just goes through about 4 meaningless power points a class. He also gives homework and grades about one thing the whole semester. Probably one of the worst professors simply for his lack of teaching!
Biggest waste of time in my life. Spends the whole class going over content that I could do in 15 minutes. Learned absolutely nothing and frequently had headaches after attending. Spends time in class covering Peppa Pig over and over. No preparation at all, seems most of the stuff is on the fly. This professor would be lucky to get a job overseas.
Let me start off with saying Skeen as a person is great. The class itself, is literally pointless. The ENTIRE semester he basically teaches argument types and ROCCS over and over. We don't learn how to write the paper till after our rough draft is turned in and he doesn't give you a word count, makes you guess it yourself. Didn't learn anything!!
Professor Skeen is a very nice person, but not a great professor by any means. He is not clear with what he wants from you for assignments and when you try to clarify it with a question he answers with another question. He assigns you seats, which I know a lot of people don't expect or enjoy at the college level. Would not recommend.
Skeen repeats the same writing techniques every class. It gets super boring. He talks in circles and has you write so much for participation. Attendance isnt quite mandatory, you can still Zoom in, but you need to still do the in class work on a word document if you want participation credit. He's weird, will just workout in the middle of class lol
Skeens class was the biggest waste of time. There was no preparation and we often went over the same slide shows multiple times in class. All he cared about was participation in class which was busy work and pointless. He never tells you his expectations on essays until after the rough draft is due. Do not recommend, I learned nothing.
I loved Dr. Skeen, his class is so fun and he puts on little "workout" shows every once and a while and the class just dies laughing! He makes learning fun and easy to remember. He explains ideas very well and is always available if you need extra help. Just 3 essays but he prepares you very well. 5 min of homework per class, overall a great prof!
Dr. Skeen cares for his students. However, he would be better suited teaching at a high school rather than college. I did not learn anything in this class. The attendance is very confusing and homework is pointless. Instructions are incredibly vague. It was easy, but all busy work. He is super nice though- I like him as a person not professor.
His classes are the biggest waste of time. We go over the same thing every single day for weeks on end. He has us do homework but they almost always amount to no points in the grade book. Makes assigned seating and makes you take any notes on paper instead of laptops. Overall he's a nice dude but seems more appropriate for high school.
Skeen is funny and understanding. However, his class was primarily PowerPoint reading and practice and was not engaging or interesting. Skeen allows more freedom when writing essays, and is a generally easy grader if you hit all of the points on the rubric. I would recommend Skeen for the easy A, but only if you can overcome the boredom.
Y'all are way too harsh on Dr. Skeen. While I do agree that his class can be quite repetitive due to him covering the same material over and over again, he truly cares about his students. He is an easy grader and you will easily pass if you do your work.
Dr. Skeen is super nice and caring. However, he teaches similar material all semester so it gets somewhat repetitive and boring. He also gives busywork, and it just does not seem like a good use of time.
This professor is very lecture oriented with class participation. He seems goofy and tries to interact with students as often as possible. Be prepared to write a lot in your notebooks, computers are rarely used unless you are completing homework or essays outside of class.
Dr. Skeen's class was ok. He never put in grades right away. His lectures were mediocre, you wrote a lot of notes/activities with your group that you sat with (which is also your participation) but he did show clips of the Office a couple of times along with others. His papers were also pretty easy. Overall, an easy class but wouldn't take again.
Skeen has such a great heart and really cares for his students. He allows people to miss clases and turn in late work if you have a good reason. His class simply was not for me. Lots of essays and he talks and teaches in circles often times. His material is very repetitive.
Overall, an amazing professor who really cares about his students and their success. His lectures were pretty entertaining, but there was a lot of busy work that was done in class
Professor Skeen is an extremely nice guy, who unfortunately has too many students in his classes that he can not keep up with. He is extremely unorganized when it comes to participation, and its hard to get credit for the classes you went to. The grading also seems fishy because you have to text a phone number if you want feedback on your papers.
He did not exactly have a great grasp on how to work zoom or groups in zoom so there was a huge disconnect there. He uses multiple PowerPoints for class and they are not always very clear. If you are a forensic science major, I do not recommend this course as the genre of papers do not relate at all. Get ready to learn the same things EVERY class.
Dr. Skeen is a very energetic professor who will take moments out of class to have everybody stretch if they look tired. While he has tacky comedy and often very repetitive lessons, what he teaches is applicable to every part of my college career and essay writing. Overall I feel this class equipped me to be an excellent student and writer.
promiscuous people, Dr.Skeen is amazing, and you should be happy to be in his presence. He is a super awesome guy, and his way of teaching sometimes is questionable, but it never fails to get the topic across. I love Skeen and you will learn to love him too.
Skeen teaches in a different way than most professors. 90% of the time i had no idea what he was talking about. The whole semester is just 3 essays (approx. 1,500 words). I really didn't try on the essays, but would get a good grade. He will hold you the whole time, and you have to submit notes or homework at the end of each class.
It is so obvious and clear that Mr. Skeen takes his teaching seriously. He is a smart professor and cares deeply about his job! He does do a lot of lectures, however, he makes them super interested and incorporates funny relevant videos! In ENG-105 we only had to do 3 papers throughout the semester and it was not super difficult.
Dr. Skeen is a very good and caring teacher. His class is super lecture heavy. He does assign homework, but it is simple enough to get done in 10min, and the homeworks really do help when it comes time for the essays. There are 3 total essays, and he is a super laid-back grader, so it isn't hard to get an A.
Dr. Skeen is a really nice guy his class is mildly entertaining. Lots of working with the people around you in class so get comfy with the people sitting with you. He is a workable professor and his assignments are usually very clear. Participation is a big thing in his class and is usually done through group work or individual work.
I loved Mr. Skeen! some people definitely have mixed feelings about him but I loved the way he tough and he's very open and funny and just easy to talk too and get ideas and information from. I loved his lectures, some homework but its to set you up to get an A on papers. its really not that hard of homework either. Great teacher! highly recommend
Professor Skeen is overall a really nice guy. however, his class consists of the same repeated slideshows over and over. I did not learn one thing from his class and it was unclear on what he was actually trying to teach us. lots and lots of busy work and extremely boring class. overall the assignments were pretty easy.
Professor Skeen's class was very boring and repetitive. He assigns lots and lots of busy work that has no purpose. He assigns seats to learn our names, but never does. The class overall was very easy, but had so much homework that he would say he is collecting for participation, but doesn't.
He does too much unnecessary in-class work that in my opinion is not beneficial and has only confused me and made me miserable.
Good person, horrible instructor. A lot of busy work that mostly provides no benefit. Requires you to do homework, but most of the time it doesn't even get turned in. Class turnout is always low because students realize how much of a waste of time his class is. Do not take his class.
You can tell that professor Skeen cares about his students; however, his lectures are long and dry. When students asked him about what the paper needs to look like or what needed to be included, he would simply reply with "Use your tools." These tools that he had presented to us were not very clear and it made it difficult to complete the papers.
This class did not teach me anything about writing for the sciences. The professor is an English teacher teaching science, and he assigns so much busy work that he does not even collect most days. He had so many PowerPoints that he went through that did not help at all to write the papers, and participation makes up a majority of your grade.
He is honestly a nice guy, but he does not use class time wisely. He has students do assignments that are not helpful as well as gives homework, classwork, and group work every day. He also has a seating chart for his college students which is not the college experience. Again nice guy good grader but not worth how much unnecessary work there was.
Dr Skeen is an amazing guy as a person. He is very funny and approachable. He is an easy grader. However, he has a seating chart, cold calls, holds you for full class time, gives very unclear guidelines for every assignment, gives no feedback for assignments, and there is participation credit every class, so you are required to show up everyday.
Only was graded by participation and few papers. Attendance is mandatory. Not clear with expectations at times. Class felt like groundhog day as he believes repetition is key. Pros: used video clips from shows and movies that were funny. Used Friends, Shrek, and Peppa Pig and related it to class concepts.
He truly cares about his students and is a very nice guy. But, his class drags on, he is very repetitive and a little boring. I feel like I did not learn very much, was not super helpful, he basically said "figure it out" to every question. MUST go to class, lacking participation points can tank your grade. Three papers total. Watched Office clips.
Dr Skeen is a funny and caring professor, and makes the slightly dull ENG-105 much more fun. He likes to make his class laugh, and you can count off the fact that he will learn your name! Dr Skeen on fleek!
Professor Skeen is a really amazing teacher. When I first started I thought he was strange, and his teaching methods may frustrate you, but he truly has good things to teach and I enjoyed the time I spent in that class. He is also very caring, I asked for an extension a few separate times, and as long as you have genuine reason, he's very gracious.
Dr. Skeen was by far the best English teacher I have had. Though his teaching methods are unique, he provides a fun attitude every day which helps to keep his students engages. If you focus in class, the essays are really easy to write because you basically write pieces of them for homework. Love this man!
Professor Skeen was a cool dude, he was very respectable, and super nice. His classes were boring and dragged on. You have to do almost a full page or more of notes in class to receive participation. There wasn't a lot he graded, there are a few papers but everything else is participation. I feel like I didn't learn a lot in his class.
Professor Sheen is very nice and funny, however his grading was very unclear. He was not clear on what was required. His class was very unique but the unclear criteria is what got me.
Overall, really nice guy you could see that he was caring. He was very unclear of what he actually wanted in his projects and the lectures were the same stuff over and over again. Along with the fact that he had like 10 slideshows he would jump back and forth with and was never actually finished with them constantly changing them mid class.
Skeen was nice and tried to make the class fun but it dragged on. He makes you take Cornell notes everyday for participation and gets mad when you use laptops. He jumped between slideshows during class and wasn't very organized. He also didn't explain assignments well or answer questions clearly. I would recommend you find a different professor
He was a kind teacher and man, but did not carry out his lessons well. Myself and other students around me were often confused as to how anything he was talking about related to class or what we were supposed to be learning. You also take cornell notes for an hour and a half every class, and they get boring.
Make sure to go to class and participate, if you give a good and honest effort you can achieve the grade you want.
Skeen was good. Very lecture-heavy, and you go over and practice similar concepts repeatedly. This was helpful at first, but in the middle of the semester, I was lost and confused as to why we were going over x, y, and z so many times. Other than that, he is an easy grader, participation points do add up, and he does care about his students.
Very tough grader. Gotta beware of small details and also papers are worth a lot, so doing bad in one will greatly affect your grade. I'd recommend you chose a different professor.
Dr. Skeen is an understanding and helpful professor. As long as you attend class and write notes correctly you will get a good grade and put in effort into your papers. He's easy to talk to and is really funny.
Terrible teacher and doesn't teach just gives you a packet of notes you don't learn anything from him terrible teacher
he's a nice guy and all but he grades so unnecessarily hard. participation isn't just coming to class either it's pages of notes with very specific details. his class is so boring and long we do the exact same stuff every day and is not helpful in any way. would NOT recommend.
Professor Skeen showed that he likes his job and helped whenever someone had a question. He primarily used notes that were taken in class for participation so if hand-written notes are not your thing don't take him. He was a bit picky when grading sometimes but as long as you follow his in-class instructions you should be fine.
Cornell notes every class is genuinely awful, you will dread the class. He makes you set groups for the whole year to repeat the same exact class the entire semester. Class is based on 3 essays, but Skeen is an alright guy. Class is just extremely tedious and boring, I would recommend some one else who is chill.
He insisted on everyone writing Cornell-style notes (which is ridiculous because it is a college course, and by now you should know how you best take notes). I do not take the best notes when writing that way, but he grades them, so you have to do it the way he wants you to. Also, even if you follow the rubric closely he will still take off points.
Just do NOT take. He teaches the same thing every class. Cornell notes EVERY class. Class is based on 3 papers that he gives no instructions on how he wants them done. Class is boring and so repetitive. Does not give any good feedback for why he gives a poor grade. Participation is based off of one thing. Writes his slides as he goes through class.
3 papers definitional essay. Cause/effect and proposal essay. Doesn't give personal feedback for each students paper. Does a general YouTube video.
Does Cornell notes for participation, and he sometimes won't give you participation if he feels they don't have "enough". He makes up his own ideas to teach that make no sense and if you skip class you will fail from just not getting participation. 3 or 4 big papers which he doesn't really give feedback on. He wasn't a good teacher.
Skeen tends to yap about a lot of random, unrelated topics as well as show the class some unneeded stuff. One time he showed us a Peppa Pig episode, another he was dancing to Soulja Boy, and twice told us how he likes to take out his anger in GTA while exploding cars into people.
If you have him as your professor be ready to sit in class for hours. He doesn't release early. But he is an amazing professor, funny, and loves engaging with students. He actually takes time to learn every students name, which I loved about his class. He does corner notes in which you can use for your essays with is a plus. Easy A.
Thomas Sheen is an ok teacher. He uses Cornell notes as a form of participation. His classes feel like an eternity due to his dad jokes and amount of talking.
Pretty terrible teacher
Dr. Skeen gives us assignments and doesn't give us instructions or clarifications for the assignments, which leaves us students confused because we don't know what to do during his lectures.
There was hardly any homework and he was a very fun professor I wish I could have him next semester!
All he does is talk during class for his lectures, he is really good at grading and will help you whenever needed, he is very understanding as well.
Very little homework and class is just lecture.
