He's very smart. he's very dedicated to his work. He's the man. Just to tell u; He had a 4.0 in Harvard and is one of the most smartest, youngest, coolest professors in Baruch. Trust me, He's the man when it comes to education. He's very, very, very good.
Great Professor! He teaches very well. He's a very cool professor.
Best professor ever know what he is talking about i actually had a crush on him cos of his intelligence easy A
The best professor in the world. He knows his stuff and he can actually teach. He's also really fiiiine.
He knows how to make history intresting and has a very broad knowledge. Students bombard him with questions all the time and I have not seen one go unanswered. take his class.
Young, easy, attractive teacher. If all teachers were this adorable, then i'd never wanna leave college. Total sweetheart and a nice guy too. Take his class.
a very adorable prof. he showed so much care for students and he really tired to make the material more interesting. not very hard test, u just have to make sure you got the notes right. the BEST prof i ever had in baruch. TAKE HIM u wont regrat!!!
great teacher, really helps you out and TEACHES everything, take him if you can

Had two classes with him. If you ever wanted to find ANYTHING about Africa he is your guy.Good knowledge about European history too (Specially about wars)
Class is interesting but the midterm was ridiculously hard and made very little sense. He also does not answer emails even when it is a personal matter:extremely rude. Not as easy as people make it out to be.
he makes this class interesting because you can tell he cares a lot about what he teaches. very patient too. but this is a class you have to pay attention in because it's all note taking. great class to take.
Great professor, very knowledgable about the the material, cares about the students, and is a fair but not easy grader. You will learn a lot in this class and remeber it too, but you will also have to read a lot. Overal it was a great class.
Brilliant and passionate about his job. A true pleasure to have as a professor and we are very fortunate to have him at Baruch.
He is the best... really.. he is
be prepared to read about a 30page chapter a night , reaserch paper and 2 exams, mad quizzes and a few mapquizzes, not a difficult class but mad werk mad studying lol hates answering 2 many questions, funny dude tho
he is so funny and brilliant! trust me, he makes history pretty damn interesting. He's cool and jokes around with everyone. Take him, you won't regret it. :)
for the quizzes just memorize the bold terms in the reading and map quizzes arent that bad. on the tests, they're short answer and he's pretty lenient on grading them. u could just bs and get a decent grade on them. overall pretty good teacher
Honestly, except that he looks hot and wants to be funny all the time, the class is in some way boring. In fact, he doesn't teach from the book, so take good notes. So even though you don't need to buy book, you end up reading hundreds of pages per week. 10 quizzez, 2 exams, research paper. You have to study for this class in order to pass well.
professor obi is the nicest professor u will ever get. he makes the class very interesting. he gives alot of quizes but there multiple choice and if u just go over what he tells u to ur sure to get a good grade. hes very hot in some weird way and funny. i've learned alot in his class & enjoed every moment in it. i would take him again if i could
Probably the best history course you will take at Baruch. Obi is fair and entertaining. he saves you money by putting the text on blackboard and drops lowest grades on quizzes. take him!
Omg!! girls love him! lol I took him for a fall semester, he is good if you are good at memorizing. He gives you a lot of hand outs and a LOT of info to memorize, its like learning a whole new language. he never used the books in class, instead posted huge articles online.
the quizzes are multiple choice, just memorize the definitions and some are map quizzes. the final and midterm were short answers, pretty hard but he curves it. final paper is either primary source or research. do the shorter one obviously.
A lot of the readings! You'll need to memorize a lot of new terms that you won't be able even to pronaunce. Quizzes are easy, but exams are confusing. He has good memory on names!
whoever wrote that comment on 1/4/07 is lame. yes obi is hot and funny- but that just adds to the class appeal. the class is anything but boring- he makes it very interesting. obi is amazing and is one of the rare professors at baruch who actually care about his students. take him!!
How many professors do you know that takes their class paint-balling?
He's a good professor. He incorporates everyone in class during the lesson instead of just giving us facts about what happened long ago, which nobody really cares about. You still have to do the reading-its going to be on the tests! He is pretty lenient with the grading. I definitely recommend him.
Professor Obi is mad cool and he's really interesting during the lectures. I definately recommend him for this class.
Easy class. Tests are mostly based on knowing the definition and spelling of terms he gives in classes. He does give some surprise quizs but they be easy if do your reading. The textbook is scanned online so you dont need to buy one. Students ask interesting questions makes the class pretty funny and interesting at times. Basically, easy A.
EASYYYYYYYYYYYy AAAAAAAAAA!!! :)i love this proff!! got an 80 somethin on the 1st test n was disappointed...n then i got a 106 on d next one!!....the key is 1.do all the readings,2. take notes [write every word he says!!]....highly recommended!!
all I can say is that MEMORIZE MEMORIZE AND MEMORIZE... STUDY THEN YOU'LL DO FINE!
he was the best~! really easy to understand, teach class really well, and funny. super nice~! take his class u'll get a A
He's a really nice guy and you can tell that he wants to make you understand the material. Answers any and all questions regarding the topic-gets annoying at times because some people ask really dumb and repetitive questions. Only homework given is reading. Tests and quizzes are easy. Memorize the definitions and you'll do fine. *RECOMMENDED*
3 tests (25% each), attendance and quizzes(25%). Attendance is mandatory, if you want to do well in the class, taking good notes is the key. Memorize the terms on the board, the bold terms in the book and you will do great. He gives extra credit and he is really a good professor. Explanations are clear and the atmosphere in class is really pleasant
Great Professor. Just read the required materials before class and study the terms. STUDY THE TERMS. He actually made history interesting!
i think he is really nice...even though i did poorly in the class, but i still pass...and also, he gave us lots of chance to reach the passing grade. .cux our class' test grade is not that good..then he gave us extra test and extra credit to curve our grade..overall nice professor ever
Prof Obi is really amazing. He is very smart and knowledgeable about history. His lectures are interesting but you really need to pay attention and take down notes. You need to study and work hard but it is all worth it. The subject matter is not boring at all and he is very fair. His tests are more than 100 points so there are lots of EC points.
he gives you everything you need to know for the exams, so you will be fine. Since he doesn't assign written homework, it's up to you to read! He's throws pop quizzes if he senses that people aren't doing their readings... It's pretty easy to get an A, if you just read the assigned 5-10 pages a night... He's pleasant to look at ;)
I messed up most of the quiz but still managed to get an A.If u can memorize lot of words. He is the best for you or Just try ur best during the exam.3 exams.got extra credits. easier than the quiz for me... do ur best in the exams and u will get an A. He took attendence. He is really nice and try to keep ur awake in class.
"I feel like we lost a class to presentations," said professor Obi at the end of the last class. This is also how I feel, since we lost over half the semester on presentations. Not only are presentations a terrible way to evaluate a person's intelligence, but they are also damn boring to listen to. It was a shame, I was very excited for this class.
Very good professor; gave few opportunity for extra credit. The exams are trick but if you study all the definition you get it. The class is very interesting and the professor is open mind to listen and make the class so easy.
If mundane readings for which you have to answer inane questions because nobody does the reading, if listening to 40 presentations by uncharismatic and clueless classmates, if having no discussions about the readings for every single class, if lacking any coherent structure and theme all sound enjoyable to you, then feel free to take Obi.
Easy A class!! He gives extra credit. There are 2midterms and 1 final. You just need to memorize all terms.
All memorization. 3 exams and weekly quizzes. Just do the readings. No intelligence required.
His lectures are quite interesting although he goes off on many tangents. If you do the reading and memorize the terms, you should get an A.
The class wasnt hard. The tests are only his terms which he dedicates the entire class to. It is strict memorization of the terms. Thats it, memorize terms and youll get an A. But each exam was over a 100 terms so be prepared. The quizes are on the reading. And for the exam just remember the quiz questions cuz they are reused on exams.
Memorize terms. That's it. Letting him go on tangents will make you have to memorize the terms he won't have time to go over. Gives map quizzes and quizzes on readings for homework which are mostly on the vocabulary in the reading.
Good instructor. Very nice, funny, and helpful. Spends entire class reviewing terms in depth so pay attention. The exams are all multiple choice and fill-in-the-blanks, as well as an essay. The quizzes are all multiple choice on the textbook readings. Other than the readings and studying, there is no homework. Gives extra credit opportunities too.
I enjoyed going to class but it really is a lot of work for a history class. There are way too many quizzes, most of which are harder than the exams. Unfortunately, they add up. However, as long as you do well on exams, you should be ok. No final.
Super nice and interesting Professor. I was inspired by the way he is teaching and how he is passionate about the material. he really tries to make his lectures clear and integrative-which I find super important in a history class . He is super energetic. there is a lot of work and the test can be full of small details but it's not so bad. take him
Easy class. Just memorize terms that's it and you'll get an A. He even tells you study the terms and you will get an A in his class. You do have to read because he gives pop quizzes.
He is an awesome professor. Always so energetic and ready to teach. Its an easy A if you memorize the terms. He gives out 3 test the entire semester, and has a few pop quizzes. Each test is based on the terms he gives you.
Hilarious, sweet, & very knowledgeable - Obi is one incredible Prof. However, unlike most of the reviewers here, I had a very difficult time with this class. Lectures were funny & interesting, but jam-packed with info. Readings were long & difficult, & quizzes were given frequently. Graciously, I was given two E.C, which should raise my F to a C-.
He is so passionate and full of energy. Even though I generally dislike history, I really enjoyed the class and learned a lot. There are a lot of quizzes, but just study and keep up on the readings, you should be fine. The terms are most important. Although his standards are high, it's easy to do well as long as you do all the work.
His lectures are absolutely amazing. Most of the time, the information does stick with you without memorization because he simplifies it. However, book reading is lots of info. Tests are primarily vocab so study that religiously. Quizzes are spontaneous and are concept/vocab based! Aside that, he's an amazing professor. Hilarious and interesting!
Great professor - very energetic, knowledgable, and funny. Frequent quizzes on HW readings, 3 exams (Multiple Choice, Fill in the Blank, Maps, Essays) with possibility of 100+ points, no final. Use terms from HW readings/class and MAKE FLASHCARDS! If flashcards are studied well weekly, exams will be easy and require little studying the night before
He's an amazing teacher you will learn a lot. When he puts the readings in his own words its more interesting. Unfortunately there was too many readings and pop up quizzes that if you didn't read or aren't prepare for you will fail. Test were a little bit difficult for me. Sadly I failed the class.
If I were to describe this class as a game it would obviously be fortnite. Everyone wants in and everyone likes it. I really enjoyed my time here so far and overall his lectures aren't too intensive as well as his terms. The tests are super easy and the pop quizzes are pretty easy as well. Overall a pretty good class hope to update after it ends.
If you ever played pokemon, meeting him was essentially like catching a shiny. If you're taking a hard class this semester definitely take Thomas the same semester, guaranteed A- or above. Doesn't take attendance; just apply basic knowledge on tests and quizzes and even drops the lowest quiz and 1 midterm.
There are a lot of terms to memorize for each exam, if you study the terms systematically this class will be easy. I personally cram the night before and get above 100 for the first two mid terms(Extra Credit available). He turns the terms into a story which makes a complicated subject easy to digest. Take this class if you study systematically.
He puts terms on the board and you just have to memorize them. About 140 terms for each test and you can find them on quizlet so you dont have to take notes. He gave a lot of quizzes but made possible to get over 100 on tests. I didnt read and failed every quiz and got over 100 on tests and ended with an A. Only take if youre good at memorizing.
He makes it easy to remember the material. Memorize the terms on the board.
very lecture heavy. 3 exams more than 100 terms per exam and an essay. marks you late even if you are one minute late. hes a nice professor and explains well but this is not an easy A class at all. readings are required because he gives lots of quizzes announced and unannounced.
The professor himself is very motivated. The syllabus is clear and the material is straightforward. However, because the professor teaches more than 2-3 classes, he relies on his teacher aides to grades his exams. And more than once, the teach aide has graded my exams incorrectly. And he takes off points off his exams if you ask him to regrade it.
Only take if youre good at memorization. Hes really strict on attendance and will mark you late even if it was just 10 seconds late. I think 2 lates is an Absence, and 3 absences lowers your letter grade down one. I got an A only cause im good at memorization otherwise it was hard for other students.
Honestly, this is one heck of a guy. Great personality, knows like 8 languages, and makes the class fun. Tests are mainly vocab and readings online with extra credit available if you know more vocab terms (the more terms, the more points). Very straight forward and amazing class.
hes great makes it fun explains well, but very hard class, i failed all three tests and i think i failed the final too
THIS IS NOT AN EASY CLASS. He grades his test soo strictly. NO joke if you come in on the dot, you have to sign the late book. Gives quizzes like every class based on the reading. You have to write an essay for the test along with fill in the blanks, multiple choice. To get a decent grade in the test, make sure to write 25+ vocab words on the essay
Obi is a really enthusiastic teacher, and makes the class as interesting as he can. The whole class is basically him talking, no powerpoints. Sometimes he writes notes on the board. Personally I have a really short attention span, so I dozed off a lot during his lectures despite him making it interesting (not his fault). A lot of memorizing.
The tests are extremely hard and he expects us to memorize 140 terms plus more material per exam. No matter how much you study you will not get the grade you deserve. He was mandated to give online meetings but he didn't do that and wanted us to teach ourselves. His lectures will make you fall asleep and its so much information.
He is extremely boring. I studied hours for his test but his questions are impossible to answer. He gives fill in the blanks with no word box so you have to memorize every single detail. He also makes you memorize maps with 20+ countries. It is not worth it for a history class.
Lots of readings!! Make sure to read 15 pages of the textbook for every class. He's a kind guy but tough grader. Make sure to study your vocabulary! Don't be late to class, he will make you write your name of the late book. Hard class. You must study all of the vocab and read before classes to prepare yourself for his pop quizzes.
He only gives lectures so you have to write down and memorize every detail. You also have to memorize the textbook which is 30 pages every week. He does too much for a history class. I learned absolutely nothing even though I studied 20+ hours for his tests I failed.
He's a good prof its just that he gives so MANY terms that you have to learn for each exam. Exams are fill-in, MC and writing, plus maps. The first exam there were 250 you had to know. There's quizzes on maps or on the assigned reading. There's basically no Hw. I loved history & I'm good at it but its A LOT you have to remember for this class.
Obi is intelligent and enthusiastic. Sadly I had to drop the class bc his teaching style does not mesh well with the way I learn. He doesn't use PPTs, so you have to take notes as he speaks, which is a real problem for people like me with attention disorders; even the slightest lapse in focus had me left in the dust. Expect TONS of studying/FCs.
One of the worst professors I've had so far. He expects too much from his students and his lectures are terrible. He is disorganized and he is the reason why I hate history. AVOID THIS CLASS IF POSSIBLE!! Exams are also impossible to study for and gives way too much reading: its a prerequisite and everyone in the class is just trying to pass
Dear god whatever you do avoid this man. idk what happened after he went remote but he went downward. whatever you do avoid him. its bad like real bad. not a single person in my class knows whats going on. he doesnt give powerpoints so u just have to copy down what he says and he rambles. most uninteresting class. a lot of reading.
Hes just terrible. Avoid this class at all cost for your sanity!
Will often see him in different backgrounds while lecturing us if you take his remote courses. Sometimes would give a day off when he was in rural areas with no signals. He would give us youtube video to watch on when he's not available, which was way more organized than his no ppt lecturing. You should learn to learn by yourself if you take him.
I would not take his class again even if you paid me. Goes off topic during the lecture. During the test, u need to remember over 200 terms and events. The test questions are vague as hell, 40 min for 30 questions, you can't go back on the answers, and 20 min for an essay. Unless you memorize everything on top of ur head, u won't have enough time.
He has no homework so if screw the quiz and exam you could probably get a bad grade. Lots of lectures. You get no participation score if not turn on your camera all the time. He's the most unorganized professor I've ever met. My suggestion: take other professor to save yourself.
He knows a lot about this course but he talks way too fast for me to take notes and sometimes goes off-track. Doesn't record his classes. Asks people to turn on the camera for participation. Lots of reading. Tests and quizzes on both lectures and readings. Grade based on 2 tests and 4 quizzes (and 1 optional quiz to replace one worst quiz grade).
He seems like a cool guy however, his grading is unfair. Our final grade for the class was based solely on four quizzes (1/3 of grade), and two exams (each 1/3 of grade). Unless you are positive you are going to pass and/or do good on every single one of these do NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. The smallest slip up can and will mess up your grade.
Let me start by saying remote learning was a challenge for this guy more than it was for me. He often loses track of where he is in the lesson (there are no pwpts) and takes it out on the class. Pop quizzes show up when its clear no one read the textbook and what you get on tests is basically your final grade. Avoid if not a textbook learner .
Dont even bother emailing this man because you will never hear back from him. He literally gave us two tests and some quizzes and that was it. There was also homework but we didnt have to submit it so it wasnt graded on. His tests were horrendous as well as his teaching. PLEASE AVOID HIM IM BEGGING YOU. ITS SO BAD. This is your warning.
There is no way you can get a good grade in this class. He gives no notes and you have to write down everything this man says. He makes you memorize 140 terms per test. Its not easy at all. For an intro history class he does too much.
He was extremely tough. Please do not take his class. He goes by too fast and doesn't record his lectures. I felt like he was all over the place, like from one vocab definition to another. Very hard to follow along goes off topic. There is no homework which sucks because your first test will be based on 150+ vocab and that was like midterm.
DO NOT PICK HIM AS YOUR PROFESSOR!!! In 2 years experience in college worst professor I had so far, he just ignores you and doesn't explain anything. Never replies your emails don't make a mistake taking his class
I hate to be rude cause he seems like a nice dude but he's a terrible teacher. Way too many readings. Way too many terms. Teaches too fast and very unclear about almost everything. Ex: He moved a test that was 50% of our grade two days earlier than scheduled. Please do yourself a favor and find a different class or prof.
I dont know why everyone is like he gives way too much work like people this is college what are you expecting. Hes a great professor really nice, if you need help just go to office hours.
The worst Professor I have ever had in 3 years of studying. The class is actually easy but he makes it way too hard to understand and uninteresting. I would never take this professor again and I 100% DO NOT recommend this professor for you.
I WOULD NEVER CHOOSE THIS PROFESSOR AGAIN!!!....
The professor himself is very nice, respectful, and kind. His lectures aren't as bad either. BUT the amount of work he gives is very sad for my brain. The readings are long and very, VERY boring. The exams are pretty difficult as well. Classic multipe-choice questions for part 1 and write an essay for part 2 types of exams. But he takes late work.
Okay, his lectures were unengaging for the most part, he is also heavy on the scholarly jargon which is not fitting for the majority of freshmen, in the class he is teaching. His powerpoints were wordy and difficult to read. However, he is willing to amend and understand his students. Very understanding on that aspect!
Professor Obi is a nice and understanding person. I do have to say that his lectures were a bit tough to understand, so my advice is to just make your own notes and write the main points. I emailed him a few times and he was really open to constructive advice.
HIS 1001 is an easy level class but he made this class very hard and the grading system is very unclear.
This professor is terrible! Assigns unnecessary and confusing assignments. Please avoid this professor if you can.
Professor Obi was fantastic & clearly loves his subject. His enthusiasm was infectious, though I had gone into the course blind. I took the course over COVID, when nothing was normal. Professor Obi was flexible and kind through the struggle. Lectures are organized, but taking notes & paying attention is crucial. Also, make sure you do the reading.
Absolutely horrible. If you want to read 20 page texts/documents, answer a sh ton of questions for homework, and/or write lots of essays, this class is for you. I would never take this class again. The professor was not lenient whatsoever, so if you mess up or missed an exam, do not expect any mercy or exceptions. Never again.
He gives very long readings, and his lectures are very long. He basically expects you to remeber everyting he says word by word. If you miss class once, best believe you will face the consequences. Theres a quiz every week based on 15+ pages of reading, and lectures. BE PREPARED!! Its possible to get an A, but you have to work extra hard.
This class is pretty difficult, a lot of reading, long lectures, be prepared for a quiz every week. Be prepared to memorize all the terms given, if you work hard and study and remember the words, you'll do good in this class.
Prof is knowledgeable fs, and he gives extra credits. No hw, each week memorize 15-30 terms definition either from lecture/reading, sometimes is map location. Weekly quiz (10 mc/fill in blank). 2 exams, same format as quiz but more Qs include essay (extra point if you do well like write terms in chronically; topics: slavery, religion, war).
Professor Obi is charismatic and a great storyteller. However, his lectures are very drawn out and tangential which left us kinda rushed. Homework is a ton of reading and you need to remember a lot. Quizzes are simple but tests are like 150 terms each. He is always open to questions but if you don't study well enough you're toast.
This professor expects you to treat this class like a "language class" and review everything he taught after every class. Only take this class if you're fine with memorizing an absurd amount of terms and taking many tests and quizzes. If you're bad with memorization then this class is not for you!
He is kind, has engaging lectures (ask questions because otherwise you will be very confused), and is not a harsh grader. Offers extra credit on every test and quiz. Don't take if you dont want to read 30 page readings every week, followed by a weekly quiz. Try to understand the context and the vocab because it sort of got interesting at the end.
Professor Obi is kind, eliminates weekly homework, but for a HIS 1001 class it is overly challenging. The hybrid setup, off-topic lectures, and heavy memorization (160 terms per exam) make it tougher than necessary. Two exams, 8-10 quizzes demand more effort than Calculus. If you seek a challenge, go for it; otherwise, steer clear.
Had to drop, unless you know your history well don't take. He is very test heavy, everyday of his class was either a quiz or exam since it was asynchronous.
Professor Obi was interesting in his lectures and displayed his experience with different histories/cultures, but the hybrid format with recorded lectures was a detriment to the learning. The work is difficult requiring reading and A LOT of memorization. There are quizzes frequently and the exams are difficult but give a lot of extra credit.
Honestly, the professor himself is not bad at all. He's a nice guy who is willing to help if you take the initiative to ask & I would say he's pretty lenient. He gives weekly quizzes, they're easy as long as you do the readings. Passing the tests is also v straightforward. As long as you study and know the vocabulary terms, this is an easy class.
Alright here is my two cents. If you are good at memorizing, you would do fine. Quizzes are often but he drops the lowest one and gives extra credit. Its straightforwawrd if you do the readings/slides. There is a bit of your own initiative involved and there are 2 exams. Lectures are interesting but yes there will be lots of terms. But great person
The lectures can be engaging, but the workload and memorization required are intense. Prepare for frequent quizzes and exams covering a large volume of terms. Attend class, use unstuck study for study prep, and you may find the material interesting despite the challenge.
I gave a 2.0 bc a 3 is “good” and I think he's just “ok”. He's a good guy but his structure is not good. Quizzes every week, not horrible but it's A LOT of reading outside of class and asynchronous lectures. Goes on tangents and then goes “but you don't need to know any of that.” Be good at memorizing or you'll need to drop. Good guy but not again.
His rating stands accurate. Obi is very lecture heavy and you have to rely on what he says and the vocab he writes on the small whiteboards, he does not do powerpoints slides. He's a lenient grader where on occasion he gives extra credit if he sees the class did poor on a quiz/exam. Get ready to read and remember vocab and events esp. for quizzes
Certainly caring once you get to know him, and if you're willing to put the time into reading the material and studying a bit, then you're almost guaranteed an A. He let us skip the last two weeks of class if we passed the final - and made tons of other nice allotments along the way. His lectures are entertaining and unique. Would take again.
This class is difficult if you don't want to study or memorize terms. The material itself is interesting & the prof is super nice & engaging but each week there's a quiz & nothing is openbook. I'd take this if your other classes are relatively easy. This class took up alot of my time each week but I loved the prof so pros & cons lol
Spare yourself the GPA kill, take anyone but this professor. Made comments during class in regards to Asian women in ancient dynasties that were highly questionable. Unorganized, unintelligible even at times, a hot mess. Workload was insane, tests were difficult and even you passed them he'd find a way to mess with your grade. 0/10.
Professor Obi's HIS 1001 class is very lecture-heavy with weekly quizzes, 40+ pages of reading, and tons of terms to memorize. The workload feels overwhelming and focuses more on rote memorization than real understanding. Would not take again if I could drop.
I will remember this class for the rest of my life. That's all I will be saying. Good luck
quizzes almost every time the class meets in person and they are really difficult. Super focused on having to memorize hundreds of terms which is basically all he cares about, also lots of readings. Lowkey a GPA killer and I wouldn't take him again.
Obi will give you a quiz every week with about 30-40 words to know. Quizzes are every week and he's very unreliable over email. Lecture heavy, hard tests. He wants you to pass so if you fail the first test he'll give you an opportunity to pass the class. Half the class failed the first test. Funny guy but very hard class. DO NOT TAKE.
