Excellent teacher. Passionate about the topics, extremely clear, easy grader.
Ind. Freedom in Civil Society - Great teacher but course not what i expected
Don't agree with previous comments, he was a hard grader but did get a little easier as time went on.
this guy is the man. the course sucked, but he was really into the material and his students. easy grader. genuinely nice guy, esp. if u go to his office hours and have a heart to heart.
He's a great teacher, very helpful and intelligent...Great guy...

He makes boring information not so boring. He made me understand Emerson! Go to his office hours, especially before and after writing a paper. He'll usually up your grade significantly.
This guy is so great - the material of the class blows, but at times, the boring material comes to life. He tries to be as helpful, clear and nice as possible - go to his office hours, he likes that. He often gives extensions to students who ask so ask!
Very animated lecturer. Very helpful if you go to his office hours; gives good suggestions for papers and may even give you an extension. Only A I've gotten so far in college was in his class.
Yes he is very helpful and willing, but if you don't write EXACTLY what he wants you to, be prepared for some bad grades. The class was very interesting and he has great insight, but good luck if you EVER disagree with anything he says.
the class is enjoyable enough, but its tough to get anything exactly the way you want it - which is the only way to get a good grade.
he's really dedicated as a professor. you won't find someone else who's more into what he's lecturing about than prof. villano. he's a genuinely nice and helpful guy. one tip: visit him during office hours to ask for and discuss ideas about papers.
Horrible teacher, dont ever take this class. He wants the things his way and if it is not that way then he will give you bad grade. Office hours are good but they even discourage you. He doesn't count your hard work while grading. Dont take him.
Awful, sucks and partial if you do not participate. If the first impression works than may be you are fine. He wont accept your thoughts but wants EXACTLY how he thinks is right, dont take him if you rate him using this easiness, ask someone who took him.
i did enjoy his class, he has alot of insight into the material, but don't expect an A from this class. he is a hard grader and does want what he says in lectures to be found in the papers. his lectures were always interesting and i would take him again
He was a great lecturer, what needed to be known for papers was always discussed thoroughly in class beforehand, and it was not always necessary to read the books to "get" the class because Villano is VERY animated and into the material.
Not sure about these other comments.I've had my share of bad profs and he def was fine. Go to office hours and give an honest effort at improving ur writing & it's all good (I never got lower than B on anything & I'm no genius). use class notes on papers
Such a nice guy. He really tries to engage the class and makes somewhat boring readings interesting. Pretty easy grader. Always extending due dates. Participate in class... impressions make a difference.
ugh do not take this
He's is a really really good teacher and I don't say that often. As clear as can be and always willing to help you improve as a writer. You can revise any paper for a higher grade. Even if you write an A paper he is always suggesting improvements...$
He is a really nice guy and enjoys what he is talking about. He makes the material seem somewhat interesting, but there is no easy grade in this class.
I can spend all class looking at this hottie. Worth it for the meat parade.
Professor Villano is great! I choose his class for my schedule turned out to be great. He is extremely passionate about the subject matter making class enjoyable. Office hours are key going to them definately boosts grade. Listen in class, don't try to write whats on the board, makes no sense later
Very passionate about the subject, very clear in class and conferences. Pretty easy grader, too, and you can revise if you want. I'd reccomend him.
best teach ever. real fun guy; nice; lectures are interesting; TAKE HIM
I find his fiction class quite interesting. He has chosen nice books..but watch out for his quizzes. The hard thing is you REALLY gotta READ all the materials before taking his quizzes, or else you'll screw them up, and that might cause you a full grade down. He's interesting and enthusiastic tho.
Prof Villano's class is great for an easy A. I barely even tried on the papers and I did well. I've heard from others also that if you just go talk to him during office hours he'll pretty much tell you exactly what to write the papers on and how to structure them. Also, the material is awesome.
I took him for both WR's. VERY helpful in office hours. He basically writes the whole paper for you. Revisions are great and count for the same. Easy A. And he's kind of funny, too.
Really expects a lot from you. Especially for a mandatory class. I would never recommend him, because of the amount of effort required. I kind of expected something easier for a mandatory writing class. I got an A in WR 100 and am getting a B- in this class... doesn't make much sense.
Villano's the best writing prof. I've ever had. He demands that you get better, and you usually do. His physical appearance is disarming, which can be quite a shock when you realize just how quick he is. Very intelligent, and (I never say this about teachers) pretty damn wise.
Prof. Villano is awesome. His class is not necessiarly easy but he is VERY helpful. He wants his students to do better so he's always willing to give extra time for assignments and gives a lot of feedback during office hours.
Hated him as a teacher and a person. Thinks his class should be your number one priority. Missed one class because a friend died and was told I had to get my priorities striaght, and this was not even a month into class. Would not recommend him to anyone.
I diagree with the last post. He is funny, incredibly intelligent, and his grading is not hard. He made the topic interesting and I reallllly enjoyed his class. He is SO nice and understanding and conveniently extends deadlines when he feels that we need the extra time. GREAT teacher!!
Great prof, incredibly entertaining class. I could listen to this guy for hours. A quirky, peculiar man who's incredibly intelligent and funny. I've received an A on every paper, but classmates routinely get C's and B's (as well as a few A's), so it might not be easy for everyone. He will let you rewrite for a better grade, if that helps. TAKE HIM!
NOT AN EASY A!! He's a good teacher, and going to his office hours defninatley helps. I'm not sure who got A's on every paper without trying because hes a REALLY hard grader. A few bad things is that he thinks his style is the only style. Helped my grammar mistakes - worked my ass off but i'll probably get a B.
All the writing 100 and 150 courses are particularly difficult. This class was difficult for me because of the subject matter (philosophy) and the no grade credit at all for participation. Excellent teacher, but hard readings. If philosophy is not your thing, then I suggest finding a teacher who has a participation grade and a subject you like.
BRILLIANT. This is the smartest prof I've had in ages. Challenging readings. Fair grader. He'll practically write your essay for you in office hours. Take this class if you really want to learn and become a good writer.
Loves to hear himself talk, but it's interesting! Probably the least stressful WR class you can enroll in. He has a lot of office hours and is a really fair grader. Most papers require a revision and the revision grade can never be lower than the first draft..definitely a plus!
Overall, a no-stress class. TV is funny, knowledgable, and makes going to class worthwhile. No participation grade, but you can't get a lower grade on a revision than you got in the first place. A little vague on writing concepts in class, but office hours are very helpful. Take this class.
Very helpful with papers, has sort of a vendetta against deflation so tries to give points whereever possible. Funny and engaging in lecture and finds a way to relate topics to one another. Definitely recommended.
he's one of the sweetest guys around. Will try anything to help and will alow extensions... he wants people to understand soo bad he will even push back assighnments multiple times. If you have to go 150 this guy's the nicests...wont grade easy but he helps a LOT in HR (GO THERE)
This professor did everything in his power to make sure that i got the grade that i wanted, and he wanted to give me. He let me turn in two papers on the last day of class and only lowered my grade by 1 letter. He hates that he has to give grades at all. The reading is great, and he has so much knowledge, take him if you, you wont regret it!
I dont like him.
Doesn't email you back, never gives grades back so you never know where you stand, and then you get slapped with a bad grade out of nowhere, surprises on the midterm/final. If you really love English, avoid him.
Great lectures and friendly persona. Slightly harsh grader.
Awful class. No class participation except for basic reading comprehension. He lectures the entire time Will only accept his interpretations of books. Everything else is wrong in his eyes. Worst handwriting ever. Harsh grader as someone mentioned before. Avoid this class if possible. It isn't worth the headache.
He was a great professor. He was is a really great guy outside of the classroom and he couldn't be more helpful in his office hours. He really wants you to succeed and even though his hand writing is horrible, he will go over everything he writes during office hours. He can be a hard grader, but I highly recommend taking his class.
Prof. Villano=awesome. He is fun and wacky and seems to know everything about the subject he's teaching. Really a smart guy, and very thorough in explaining requirments. Sometimes hard to follow in that he jumps from topic to topic within lectures, and terrible handwriting, but still, easily my favorite class.
Good guy-knows & loves his subject. Seems to really care about students. You do have to read material. Gives a weekly quiz- not hard, he just wants to know you did read the book or story. No required paper - there is mid-term & final. Lectures are a bit disorganized. He does jump around quite a bit. Listen, take notes, participate & you'll do fine.
Set in his ways and doesn't encourage debate. He gets to know you during class then grades on those preconceived notions. I am a B student in his eyes, and received a B on every paper wrote, whether I wrote it in a day or a week. Lots of people like him, but if you are similar to me you may enjoy Prof. Beth Johnston, who I feel is vastly superior.
Great professor; knows material inside-out. Pretty much talks all class so it's more of a lecture than discussion, but he's interesting and you can participate if you have input. He really really helped on my writing; very clear and helpful. Few papers make up grade, but only the rewrites count. Great class, take it if you like the subject or not
If you sit at the front and participate he will love you. Just share your ideas. Attendance is not too mandatory. The readings are super interesting and he is not very demanding and very understanding. If you try, he will give you a good grade.
very helpful professor. he really wants to improve your writing so go to his office hours! only the rewrites are graded!
He is a very helpful teacher. I learned a lot from him.
Very cool, funny, and warm hearted man. Visit him during office hours and he'll basically outline your entire paper for you. Extremely willing to help. Anyone who complains about his grading is probably just a bad writer and deserved the poor grade. Write well...get a good grade. Oh and participate in class..he'll love you.
Villano is one of those professors who I just love. He is SO helpful in class and especially during office hours and a wonderful person, as well. He really wants to help improve your writing and you will as long as you follow along in class and make the effort to review the notes he gives you on your writing. Definitely take his classes!
If you don't go to office hours, what he wants in his essays is totally confusing. Also, he might be one of the smartest men I've ever met. He can see through all your BS and is definitely a tough grader.
vague and unclear about what he wants in papers. seems open minded when talking, but wants it a certain way in papers. no creativity allowed, it's one way. that's it. talks at you in class. it's not a discussion. tough grader and seems to base his opinion of you from when he first meets you, and displays this in grading. obvious favorites.
Had him for two semesters. He is really into what he does and loves teaching. His office hours are very helpful he guides you through your paper very well. He is a tough grader, but his comments are helpful. There are no real deadlines for papers and there is almost zero in class work.
He is very helpful in office hours. If you come in with a basic idea, he will tell you what to write for your paper. There are readings and some class work, but if you don't do it it won't hurt you. All you have to do is make sure to get your three papers done for the semester. He is very sweet and helpful, and he loves what he does. Take him.
He's a good guy, tries his best to give you good grades. Also really helpful and knows his stuff. He doesn't communicate his message too well though but overall one of the better writing professors.
T Villano is a nice guy who definitely tries to give you the highest grade he can. His classes are mandatory, which is a bit of a shame because lectures are somewhat dull and not very relevent to your essays. He is easy going about details such as length or citations. Office hours will tell you EXACTLY what to write but not always what you want
Professor Villano is a nice guy, but his classes can get REALLY boring as he mostly lectures. But he is really helpful with papers and honestly just wants you to do well. Not a bad writing class to take, but if you find something more interesting take it.
Professor Villano first comes off as a kind of goofy and unorganized guy but he definitely completely changed my confidence as a writer. I did not do well at all in my previous writing class but Villano works with you (as long as you're willing to work too) to make your essays A-worthy. Office hours are EXTREMELY helpful. I'd definitely recommend.
DO NOT TAKE HIM!! REGARDLESS OF THE TIME YOU SPEND WITH HIM IN OFFICE HOURS HE WILL DEGRADE YOU AND BERATE YOU!
Honestly, you'd think he's an easy grader. But he honestly thinks his class and writing style is amazing when it is not. He grades unfairly even if you live in his office hours. I took this class because people here said he's easy. NOT TRUE.
awful class. misleading title (social ethics and public policy). villano took my interests and managed to break them apart. dont take any class by him.
He seemed very off-putting at first, but he is genuinely the nicest man ever. He really does want you to succeed and develops a very dry sense of humor as the semester goes on. Take advantage of his office hours - he'll literally write your papers (3) for you. I put a 5 for textbook usage because there is a lot of reading, but from novels/essays.
There is a direct correlation between attendance and your grade, so even tho the lectures are completely irrelevant to the essays (which is pretty much the only graded material besides the portfolio) you still have to show up. and he does not give A's on essays. EVER. but going to office hours is very beneficial.
He's a great guy. People who dont like him, clearly never actually talked to him. He helped me immensely in my writing because he saw that I was actually trying to make an effort to come up with a good idea. Don't take his class if your not going to sit and think for hours about what you want to write.
Villano is the greatest writing professor I have ever had at BU! At first, I got confused because I do not know what kind of essay he wants..But finally, when I start to write about the second essay and come to his office hours, he is extremely helpful to help me conveying my own ideas.
Villano is very helpful and explicit. Giving him your rough draft, he will give a lot of constructive criticism. Participation is not important. Some find him irritating because of his point of views. But he was fine for me as a writing professor.
Great prof. Make sure to go to his office hours if you don't know what to write about he'll pretty much tell you what to do. Don't try to argue against him, you won't win. Going to class is also key to know what to write about
I'd go to his office hours when I had his class because I couldn't read his feedback that he wrote on my paper -- his handwriting is really messy. I would, almost word for word, apply his suggestions and changes to my papers, and he would then scrutinize those particular parts in my paper, despite them being his own suggestions. He's contradictory.
Villano is one of the most amazing professors in the world. He is extremely intellectual and very interesting to talk to. He is a fair grader - you will have to read a lot and to analyze the material to get a good grade, but he will always help you. Go to his office hours! I wish I could take his class again!
Took him for WR150 and it was probably the most boring thing. The subject matter was interesting, but in a class of 13 he taught it like a huge lecture and just spoke with no visual aid for the hour. It due dates fluctuate and he will not remind you at all about them. Assignment guidelines are always unclear.
Heres the deal with villano: you HAVE to go see him before you write an essay. no homework, you don't have to participate, no slideshows, he just talks & you sit there. His directions are really unclear UNTIL you go see him and then he'll outline your essay completely. He scared me at first but it ended up being really easy
GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS! his guidelines for essays are unclear but if you go to him he will practically spell it out for you, as long as you seem interested he will be there to help not the easiest class but I learned a lot overall he's a great professor!
His one on one session about your essay will be SO helpful! Overall he is super funny, actually cares, and is passionate about what he is teaching.
Great professor! Definitely take him for writing 100. The topic isn't the most interesting, but I surprisingly really enjoyed the class! Villano is a super nice and genuinely cares about his students. No homework and you don't have to participate. You only have to do the self assessment, 3 essays, and a final portfolio.
We only did three papers which was great and the material was interesting. If you're looking for an open discussion class about philosophy, you won't like this class. He talks most of the time which is great and if you actually listen to what he's saying he makes very interesting points. Your writing will get better though, just go to office hours.
He is a really really tough grader. It's kind of impossible to get A in his class, but he is a really nice and intellectual professor. You need to really think hard for writing. Really caring guy, but really really tough grader.
He's a pretty nice guy, but this class and BU's writing requirement in general was pointless to me. I passed and got at least an A- on all but one paper without reading any of the novels. If you go to class and regergitate the opinions he shares in your essays, you'll be fine. I didn't agree with most of his interpretations but I sucked it up.
Good Prof but a little sporadic. If you go to his office hours he will basically tell you what to write about and give you an outline. One time he tried to write on the blackboard with a battery thinking it was chalk and didn't even realize until someone pointed it out. The class is pretty boring but easy to not pay attention in and still do okay.
I enjoyed taking his English Literature class and did well and found his lectures interesting. was almost twice the age of the other students and am an avid reader so that probably helped. But I would recommend attending ever class and writing a lot of notes during his lectures which will help in writing the required papers for the readings.
He lives in his own world. Don't even try to answer his questions in class, they are either idiotically obvious or too obscure that whatever you say is not what he wants. Way too much writing and topics are boring and pointless. The grading is supposed to be all about the essays but skipping classes will result in grade penalty. Just pure torture.
He doesn't teach any material that adds value to the class or life in general. Prof. Villano is in his own world and seems to just be talking to himself the entire class. No interactive questions, assignments, or discussions whatsoever. Definitely wouldn't recommend taking his class - you might as well write essays on your own time.
Anyone who likes to participate in class and have a discussion with the professor should avoid this class at all costs. Almost impossible to ask him anything since he cuts you off before you finish your question. Go to his office hours-a must because he requires you to write according to his opinion and not what you actually believe.
His literature class is pretty interesting. Take note of everything he says and talk to him to clarify if there's anything you don't understand, since he he deals with very abstract themes. You'd think the class would be discussion based but it's mostly just understanding what he's talking about and writing papers or responses based on that.
Professor Villano is a great teacher and great guy. He loves teaching and if you show up with a positive attitude and participate you will learn and have fun in a relaxed setting.
Villano just tells you what your arguments should should be. If you go to him to discuss your paper he'll pretty much have you re-write the paper if your ideas deviate from his. Whenever you try to explain your point to him he just ignores you and goes on about what point he WANTS you to make. Completely defeats the creative element of writing
Tough grader
Professor Villano really made me think about my surroundings and myself. He is a great professor who isn't concerned about grading- he just wants his students to learn.
He is a very nice man and makes time for all his students. He seems to care for them and loves the material he teaches (and teaches it well). However, he has his own strong opinions and specific definitions of concepts that you must agree with. He NEVER lets you finish your sentence. It was survivable but I'd avoid him.
Lots of empathy shown for students struggling with a COVID semester. Made things manageable with very flexible deadlines and a willingness to be available for feedback. Very caring of his students mental health.
Professor Villano, although may sound opinionated, is a respectable man who has very interesting ideas. He's very lenient with deadlines and attendance and cares for you!
I wouldn't recommend taking him, however, if you end up in his class, it's not that bad. If you just read the works his assigns and write essays, which aren't that hard, you'll be fine. During lectures, he doesn't really says anything helpful and they're mandatory. The topic is interesting, but he makes it quite boring. Try to take someone else.
You will have many opportunities to practice your writing and the assigned topics are fairly interesting. The best part of this class are the zoom meetings we have to use to write our papers. During these meetings, he will guide you on how you should structure your paper; this is incredibly useful especially if you aren't sure how to do so.
Prof. Villano truly cares about encouraging his students to find their voice in literature. He holds mandatory one-on-one conferences to help you in the process of writing your essays.
I took his class over this past summer and it was not an enjoyable experience. He made multiple comments that made me uncomfortable (comments about race, women, etc.) and made it difficult to learn sometimes. He kept asking the class if we spoke enough english to understand his point etc. Overall an unpleasant experience.
I took his course over the summer. He made numerous comments that made me feel uncomfortable. He kept asking the class if we spoke enough English to understand his point, most of us were Asian, and also made a comment about how judges dress "transgender" (in reference to wigs and gowns). There were many others as well, too many to fit in this post.
Was lucky to end up with Professor Villano since he genuinely cares for us. He's very accessible out of class and he holds Zoom meetings to replace essay drafts. They're so beneficial because he gives a structure to write your essay. He is also very lenient on deadlines and does not impose a strict word count. TAKE PROFESSOR VILLANO if you can!
Mr. Villano is a very caring teacher that wants to help students learn to write and think critically. The course grading is very clearly laid out at the beginning of the semester, word counts are only approximate, and you will do very well as long as you read, attend lecture, and write clearly thought out papers.
He is a really nice professor and the classes do not require a lot of work. He explains the readings in class, and gives you a lot of help in office hours. The class was very interesting.
You get an automatic B+ in the class for submitting the 3 essays on time. Easy class the content is just really boring but he is a really nice guy. Overall a very easy class with very minimal effort required
Professor Villano genuinely wants his students to improve their writing skills! He's very kind, accessible over office hours, and wants students to do their best and become better writers. I highly recommend taking his class. He's very interesting and you'll learn a lot in this course!
Villano is a very passionate guy. He knows a lot about writing and literature, and will always help you when you ask. I also genuinely think he is a top tier person. He is interested in who you are and loves to converse in office hours and after class. He does assign lots of readings and is very lecture based. Take it seriously and it will be good.
I always enjoyed going to his lectures, he is very entertaining to listen to and is clearly passionate about writing. His advice is very helpful. His class has a B+ grade contract so as long as you submit everything on time and within the requirements you should do well. The class itself is not that interesting, but it is low stress and he's fun.
He knows the books he's talking about very deeply and explains things about them that you probably would never think of. The actual curriculum can be boring at times but he has a lot of insight that is interesting to hear.
professor villano is a gem of BU for sure. he made every assignment in the class valuable and enjoyable since we only had 3 essays for the semester. he had a grading contract and lenient with deadlines which is an easy A. his feedback on every essay was useful, discussions in class were thought-provoking & my writing improved. we love you prof TV!
Villano makes writing engaging with his passion and insightful feedback. The class has a low-stress B+ contract, and resources like Unstuck AI complement his helpful Zoom meetings for essay guidance.
I have so many good things to say about this man. He is incredibly sweet and wants to know how we're doing outside of his class. Flexible with deadlines and gives great feedback. He talks a lot in class… NOT A BAD THING though. He is clearly a professional and knows the material by heart. Love TV
