Wetzel is arguably the best professor on campus. He is young and enthusiastic, yet knowledgable. He is kind and compassionate, yet he demands the best from his students. He really goes out of his way for his students. An A is not important with Wetzel, what's important is the larger benefits you get from this class.
Half of the homework I did this semester was for his class. at least 30 pages of reading a week, not including bible readings, and 4 quizzes. the midterm is a 3-5 page paper and final is a 8-10 page paper, and he's and EXTREMELY HARD GRADER!! He does offer extra credit for learning the Greek or Hebrew alphabet and allows two revisons on each paper,
Absolutely amazing professor! This class was the only class this semester that I enjoyed going to and it's not that difficult as long as you keep up with the reading. I would highly recommend any class with Wetzel!
Tom is definitely the best professor I've ever had. He will go above and beyond to help you if you are having a hard time. He requires a lot of reading, but most of the time it is interesting. He is a difficult grader, but he always gets his point across so low grades are usually not an issue. I would recommend taking any of his classes.
His readings are difficult. He is one of the kindest and most helpful teachers ever. His notes are near incomprehensible, but if you use his quiz study guides as note guides it makes things a bit easier.
Wetzel is awesome! He always comes in to class in a good mood and make class entertaining! He has a lot of personality and is very intelligent.
He truly loves his subject, and despite the fact the material is at times difficult, he could not be more helpful. Just an all out good teacher, and overall person. Thank you Tom.
He is truly a believer in peace and social justice. Tom is an amazing person, a kind soul, and a wonderful member of the Loyola community. I had him my first semester of college at Loyola, and even as a part time faculty, he is thoroughly dedicated to learning and the expansion of knowledge.
I loved him. He was so nice, and ready to listen to his students. Even though he wasn't the easiest, his class was manageable and worth it for his knowledge. He made 3 hrs of theology actually interesting.
I was dreading taking a Theology course, but Wetzel takes a bone-dry subject and makes it fascinating. It's a fairly easy A if you do the readings and participate, and Tom is one of the most accessible and helpful people I have ever met. An all around good guy and a GREAT teacher!
Wetzel is a great professor. Rambles a little in his lectures and sometimes strays off topic, but if you attend every class and pay attention and take notes, you can get an A. Four quizzes and a term paper is all you have to do.
Easy teacher, kinda tough material because he isn't always clear what will be on exam--He rambles a lot in class and is really into Hebrew. Tough midterm essay grader, but exams are do able
I took Dr. Wetzel for Old Testament and loved it. I'm not particularly interested in the topic but he makes in as interesting as possible. There are quizzes throughout the semester to make sure you have read and a midterm. The final is just a paper. He also gives a couple of extra credit opportunities throughout the semester. I highly recommend him
I took Dr. Wetzel's Intro to Christian Theology course after 4 years of catholic high school. He presented things I already knew in a way that was interesting and relevant. 10/10 would take again!
Do the readings and as long as you understand what is happening in the readings you should be good. Listen to the lectures. He is so caring and has no problem giving all of his students A's. He is so enthusiastic about the subject and keeps the class interesting by telling you crazy things that will blow your mind. He is so knowledgeable. Love him!
Professor Wetzel was great, he's really enthusiastic about theology and made us dive deep into the old testament. However, this class sucked. 265 total points - 65 for quizzes, 100 for the midterm, and 100 for the final paper. If you bomb one of the biggies, it'll be hard to recover.
Don't think that you don't need to study just because this is a core class. Just looking over the notes you take during class before the exam will help you with the quizzes. The quizzes are a big apart of your grade, so don't slack.
I loved professor Wetzel! He's super great, caring and hilarious. It always seemed like he wanted his students to succeed and do well in his class. There was only one midterm but there was a quiz every couple of weeks. He also gives out a lot of extra credit!
So great! Had him as a sub for my theology class. Clear and concise. I wish I took his class! :)
Prof. Wetzel's class in Prophetic literature is incredible. The projects were few and manageable. The lectures and discussions were fascinating and fun. He's eccentric and funny, and his personality comes through in how he approaches texts that are usually seen as dry. He brings challenging concepts and ideas, but working through them is a blast.
He rambles a lot in class. Sometimes dramatic. It's a bad experience. Maybe a nice person but not the most helpful professor.
Theology class should be somewhere where people can express their beliefs and exchange different perspectives, but not here, not with this professor. Yes, there are extra credits, but they are very hard to get and he is really nitpicking. Tough grader.
As for extra credits, even though there are many opportunities, but they can barely making up the lost points due to really tough grading on regular assignments. My friends and I did not expect a theology class to be this hard. Avoid if possible.
Lecture heavy. Many extra credits. Can be somewhat tough on grading. Not recommended.
The extra credits are hard to get. Quizzes are very hard. Not recommended.
Dr. Wetzel is an amazing professor and a respected person. He is incredibly smart and has a lot to say. His lectures are interesting because he knows SO MUCH! He is extremely passionate about theology and really cares about his students. He has many responsibilities but still finds time for students. He gives many opportunities to boost your grade
One of the worst professors I have ever had. For those of you that are not super good at theology and have to take this for your core, do NOT choose him.
He's great!! Lots of extra credit options and really entertaining lectures. Definitely more of a literature class than a religion class. A good choice for non-religious students as he gives a good introduction and allows many opinions
He's a great guy and professor. His lectures are engaging! He makes the bible interesting. I get what people are saying about an unclear syllabus, but it's not that hard to do the assignments and get extra credit in class. He wants students to succeed. Talk to him if you're having any trouble!
This is one of the hardest classes for me. Do not suggest.
Very hard grader for a core class. Impossible quizzes. Avoid if possible.
Great guy and solid choice for your core religion class. The quizzes are hard but not a huge part of the grade. He also allows and encourages a ton of extra credit options. He's really funny and keeps the class interesting. Highly comprehended!
The quizzes are VERY hard!
Lectures are not engaging. Unclear syllabus.
He's more like an literature professor than a religion prof. He's cool, funny and very quirky. I took Old Testament as a last resort because it sounded so boring, but he made it fun. He talks a lot about historical formations of books, and I feel like I learned a lot. Lots of easy extra credit, so it's not hard to get an A.
Great prof. and very funny. I would recommend his classes to anyone. He allows for so much easy extra credit that it's easy to get an A. You'll learn a lot too. This class was on Ruth, Judith and Esther, and he gave us a lot of freedom in our papers.
He doesnt provide any sort of guidelines on his essays, and if you choose to take the midterm exam instead of the essay, prepare for a 100 question exam over things that were not covered in class. Do not take this class if you are not interested in the subject, choose something easier.
Prof Wetzel is a very kind man and cares about how well his students do. If you participate and ask questions, he is very willing to work with you and even restructure the class to help you succeed. His quizzes are straightforward, and he says you need to read but honestly it isn't necessary. Good for supplementary material though
He wants you to pass. He completely rearranged our class to make it easier because he realized how hard it was. Now the class is a joke, which it should be for a core class. I love this class so much and Wetzel is such an understanding guy. Definitely take him.
Incredible guy. He's honestly so nice, and very flexible with all assignments and due dates. He's also a VERY generous grader and offers so many extra credit options. It's almost hard not to get an A.
Quirky guy who gives a lot of extra credit. I ended up liking this class a lot.
At first, the class was kinda hard but he rearranged the syllabus twice during the year which moved my grade to an A. After he rearranged the syllabus, every graded assignment had a TON of extra credit so getting an A was super easy. It's not hard to get a good grade in the class if you keep up with the current topic.
Took his class to fulfill a core requirement first semester, but I ended up learning a lot. To be honest, I didn't put a lot into the class and was directing most of my studying time and energy into classes for my major which is totally unrelated, so my grade was deserved, but I enjoyed the class and he's a super nice guy.
Test heavy, lecture heavy, tough grader. Its hard!
So many papers! Hard! Lecture heavy.
Professor Wetzel is a great professor for Old Testament/Hebrew Bible. He is not the easiest professor, but he is so passionate about the subject and makes it interesting to follow along. You don't want to miss much class, although he doesn't take attendance, because the quizzes are based about what he teaches in class.
1000% TAKE HIM! Dr. Wetzel is a GEM! This was one of the most enjoyable classes I've ever taken. He's a loved & well-respected man who cares deeply about his students. He's a Harvard graduate, so his lectures were extremely intellectual & inspiring. I'm a Christian yet I learned so many things I didn't know before this class. God bless Dr. Wetzel!!
THE WORST PROFESSOR EVER. I have cried many times within this class because of how unfair everything is. 6 quizzes, 10 points each A LOT OF MATERIAL TO STUDY for a little 10 point quiz. A big midterm and paper and then a final paper. If you have another chance to take a different prof, I would. I would not recommend to anyone. Save your GPA
I took this class for my tier 2 theo credit and it wasn't bad. The quizzes can be a little difficult just because he asks very specific questions. You get called on randomly throughout the semester for credit so you have to do the readings and show up which is kind of annoying. Easy midterm and just a 4 page paper for the final. He is super sweet!
Don't take this class if you're not a theo major. No way to boost your grade because you're grade is made up of quizzes, midterm and final. The essays for the exams are nearly impossible to do well on. Would not recommend, save your GPA.
nice guy but the class is unnecessarily difficult for core and there's a lot of outside work. super harsh grader. take a different class for your credit and save your gpa
Don't take this class if you want an easy core. His grading criteria for midterm/final paper is unclear, hard to do well even if you understand the material.
So hard to do well.
Tough grader!
do not listen to the good reviews. i took this class for my core tier 2 theology and i had to drop it midway through the semester because it was so hard. youre final grade is only made up of 2 tests and like 5 quizzes. The questions are so technical as well and designed to make you screw up. worst class ive ever taken.
So difficult for a core class. He asks very specific questions on tests and quizzes and is harsh when grading them.
Professor Wetzel is fantastic. His in-person lectures are great, he very obviously cares a lot about the material. I have no experience in Hebrew Bible study or anything, and going into this class I thought it would be a drag, but Wetzel found a way to make all of his lectures interesting! Read and complete the SG and you will ace the quizzes.
If you do not read the assigned sections prior to lectures, you will be lost or can't contribute as much to in-class discussions. Quizzes included true/false and multiple choice. Tests were the same as the quizzes but had short answer questions. However, I felt like the quizzes and tests were very hard even with his study guides. Very specific.
Wetzel is really passionate about the subject, but he is a big fan of trick questions so his quizzes and tests are pretty hard. Lots of studying is required, but he's helpful if you meet with him outside of class. He doesn't use presentations, only writes on the whiteboard. I'd take him again but beware this is not an easy A.
I think that honestly if you are just attentive in class, then you will do great. He writes literally everything out on the whiteboard so as long as you take notes on that then you are almost guaranteed a good grade. There are quizzes and a midterm and a final. Honestly really liked his class he's a super nice guy who is really helpful.
Honestly don't take him, his classes are lecture heavy. Grade is only exams and quizzes, the exams and quizzes are difficult. If you're good at listening to a professor just talk the whole class period then take him but otherwise I'd steer away. I was confused majority of the time even though I was in class almost everyday. Hard class to pass.
This class is graded only by the quizzes, which are difficult, the midterm and the final. I found it was difficult to be fully prepared for the quizzes even after doing the readings and attending class frequently. Professor Wetzel is a nice guy but there isn't a lot of room for error, if you do not do well on the quizzes you will not pass
Lectures consisted of him writing on a white board. My "textbook" was a comic book and a Catholic Dictionary. Easily my hardest class, he is a very tough grader. There were very few assignments (4 total) so there is minimal room for error. If you get him I would simply drop to save your GPA.
Although he is obviously very interested by Christian theology, there are only 2 papers, a midterm, and a final. If you mess up on any of these, your grade will plummet. He is a really harsh grader and no one I know has gotten an A in this class. If you can find a better professor, save your GPA.
Although he is extremely passionate, his lectures are dull and this class is hard to keep a good grade in. His grading criteria are unclear and he is a harsh grader. There are only 4 graded assignments, so any mistakes will make your grade plummet. Try to get a different professor if you can.
Whatever you do, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!! Very hard to do well as only four things go in the gradebook. If you do bad on one assignment you will not get a good grade. I have never cried so hard over a class in my life. Essays are graded extremely hard, and this course will make you hate your life.
Nice enough guy but the hardest class I had this semester. Four assignments that make up your grade which he grades very harshly. Constantly confused in this class. Do not do this to yourself.
Very nice person, is helpful if you put in the time to go to office hours. If you have a problem you should try to go. His grading can be tough just go ask for help if you need to rewrite a paper. Readings are important for doing well on the essays. Only 2 papers,1 midterm, and a final project. Do not take this class if you want an easy A!!!
do NOT take this class. Super hard grader and only 4 things in the grade book. Says attendance isn't mandatory in the syllabus but if you don't go to every single class he will give you an F on all your essays.
Professor Wetzel is a nice guy, but his class is not fun to say the least. He tries to keep you interested, but sometimes there isn't enough things going on to be able to stay interested. You don't really have to do the "homework" because it isn't graded. There's only 4 things in the grade book, 3 being papers, which are often boring topics.
If you do pretty much the minimum amount of paying attention you'll do well. I personally loved the class; I thought the lectures were very interesting, and he often got into tangents that got me interested in the greater picture of what we were learning. He's also very friendly, and pretty accommodating if you need assistance.
only 4 things in the grade book, 3 of which are papers. hes a tough graders but he gives you the opportunity to rewrite the papers at any point and he loves to help with them if you just ask. his lectures can be boring but if you interact it can be fun. as long as you show you're trying you will do well. he tries to make it easy and is so sweet
The papers are the most important part of the class, make sure to talk to him in his office hours about every paper because sometimes his expectations can be different than yours might but if you talk to him you will pretty easily get a good grade. Pretty interesting lectures and overall a great class.
Professor Wetsel obviously cares about his students and subject but this class is SO HARD. It's taken almost exclusively for a core requirement, which he acknowledges, but then his exams rely entirely on SMALL details. He says you only need to know the answers to the study questions to pass the exams but has material we've never discussed in class
Thomas Wetzel is probably a great person! he is so passionate about what he teaches. However, the class is only graded on 4 things, 2 papers and 2 exams. He offers extra credit but only applies it to your grade if you are already passing. He is a super tough grader and you will struggle in this class since he focuses so much on tiny details
Dr. Wetzel is my favorite professor ever. He is so passionate about what he teaches. However, if you aren't interested in the material you will probably hate his class. he is a stickler for details and expects a lot of his students. I still HIGHLY RECOMMEND him if you're interested in religion.
The class is lecture heavy, and the tests are extremely difficult, and loosely based off of his lectures. Half of your grade is participation points, and he asks very hard questions. I would not recommend taking him.
I LOVED HIM! You can tell he's passionate about theology so I found this class to be so interesting. However, tests are very specific and participation is a large part of your grade so I suggest putting in the work outside of class and taking good notes. If you don't like theology I don't recommend. Challenging class but I got so much out of it.
Dr. Wetzel is a kind person overall. I took this class last year and failed. You're only graded on four things, and those things are graded extremely tough. I completed my final essay which I thought I did pretty well on, and I don't even think he gave me any feedback on it. I would not take it this class... it was too hard for a 100 level.
I would absolutely not recommend taking Prof Wetzel. His classes are all lectures, and his tests are extremely hard. Do not expect to get a passing grade on any of his tests. He made the class a lot harder than it needed to be as it is a 100 level class.
Randomly called on to answer questions so attendance is mandatory in order to achieve the 2/2 response points. Extremely picky questions on his quizzes and tests. More than 100 pages of reading each week. Most boring 2.5hrs of my week. He is nice, but highly recommend not to take.
So much unnecessary stress, and the class has no variety. The tests do not match the material at all. I would highly recommend not taking this class or the professor.
This class was terrible, Wetzel randomly calls on you to answer questions which gives you your participation points and counts for your attendance. If you do not answer correctly or do not answer at all you will not receive your 2 points. Exams & quizzes are hard. If you do not have an interest in theology then I do not recommend taking him.
This was probably one of the worst most difficult classes i've taken. I am not religious and it made it really difficult to understand because you're expected to know how to read and interpret a bible. you are randomly called on and must answer correctly to get your attendance points. Super tough grader on impossible exams. don't take it.
Wetzel is an awful grader, gave me a zero on a paper for not having the hard copy of the required material, the only learning done in class is going over the homework, he gives poor feedback. For turning in the homework he splits it up into rounds, so half the class turns in the homework one week and the other half the next week. He is lazy & rude.
Had to drop out because his assignments were impossible. He only goes over the homework during class time so you are never really learning everything new. His feedback on homework is very vague so you don't know how to improve. He collects half of the classes homework every other class so there isn't many chances to get more points in the class.
DON'T, JUST DON'T!!! Dropped class because of his harsh grading on reading questions. Gave little to no feedback on how to improve on questions. The book he'd make us read was long and difficult to interpret. Reading questions were a chunk of the grade. The other graded parts was two exams. Also was against the use of any technology in class.
STOP not an easy an intro clas. This prof is brutal. His grading is inconsistent—your answer could be backed by a page reference, but if it's not his specific one, it's wrong. Says ‘in your own words,' but fails you anyway. Lectures are 2.5 hours of non-stop monotone talking. No engagement, just relentless droning. Expect frustration and low grades
This is not an easy intro to Christian Theology class. Expect heavy 2 1/2 hour lectures. Really challenging homework with even tougher grading. The exams are both multiple choice, T/F, short responce and an essay question. However, the professor is very passionate and if you enjoy the topic and know a lot about it you will enjoy the class.
Thomas is a very subjective grader, and even though I took him for Christian theology, we read from a catholic theology book. I thought this class would be easier for it to be a 100 class- but it came off very difficult, and he didn't show any signs of caring.
He is a very tough grade. If you don't take notes on his lecture during class, you will fail the test. If you don't actually read the book/parts of it, you will fail the assignment. His grading OUTLINE is kind of nice so it's easy to bring up grade if you mess up in beginning. Very nice and passionate about subject but a lot of work for a core.
NOT AN EASY A CORE CLASS. no. just no. RUN. no technology class, at ALL. none. biased, tough/impossible grader. was raised catholic my whole life, but apparently not. blatantly says my responses are wrong, and after challenging assignments with textual evidence against him, he totally dismissed it. unless ur a die hard catholic or teacher pet, j no
Never take this professor. He makes his class way more difficult than necessary. He is so hard to work with, and sends nasty emails that are so passive aggressive. Absolutely do not recommend taking him.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! WITHDRAW OR DROP IF YOU HAVE A CHANCE!!!! You need to read the book for the homework questions. The book is so long and tedious. He's also picky with the answers, and his grading system is terrible. It's awful. HOWEVER! If you go to his office hours, he can help you understand the book, it's a 50/50 gamble in this class.
DO NOT TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN!! Literally his grading is so hard, and lectures are boring.
Thomas Wetzel is probably one of the worst people on this planet. He expects you to be able to read his mind to figure out how he wants you to answer the homework questions. I never once got above a D on a homework assignment because of his impossible grading system. I had to fight for my life to get this B+. STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS MAN!!!!!!!
This man was such a terrible professor. He assigned questions from our readings, had us share our answers in class, and then he would grade them so harshly after. Everyone in my class was failing, and majority of us had to withdrawal from the class. He even told a girl in the class that he wouldn't give her any feedback because she spoke out.
If you don't have a religion, pick one and pray. Extremely harsh grader no matter how much you study it will be hard to get a high grade. Will only give a chance for extra credit if you're passing?? Passive aggressive emails and even told me to stop coming to class and to stop doing his work as he thought I was not going to passing.
