really good teacher
Some of his assignments are hard, but he works with you to help you understand. People who pay attention and come to class can learn a lot, but he's not an easy "A." A few students in the class didn't seem to like him, but I'm taking him again for 102.
awesome teacher.. eventhough, the essay are hard, he works with you to get a better understanding... one of a best teacher..
not an easy "A".. but he is very helpful.. u will learn a lot from him.. a good teacher.
He is a good teacher. His class isn't the most exciting but he tries to keep you interested. He is a fair grader and as long as you do your work (which isn't that hard) you will get a good grade. I recommend him!
Fair, likable, clear about expectations, interesting class, all around GREAT prof. one heads up: has some odd philosophies and may expect you to be complicit and sit in class while he shows questionable pics so he can explain why it is bad to be complicit. Still a great prof, very reasonable, and a visit to his office can easily solve this.
Very interesting professor with interesting "thematic" material that may be different from other 103 classes. Even if you aren't interested in what he has you read, he will help you find a way to bring in your own interests while addressing his. He's not easy--especially if you don't keep up on the reading.
He is really good professor and i highly recommend you to register for his class. He's a little bit unorganized but overall he's nice. He's an editor so it's a little bit hard for you to get an A except you have to try your best and show him your effort.
He's a very nice teacher but his class is boring. He has a lot of quizzes, so you have to read everything he gives out. Overall, nice man just read everything. Also give extra credit to boost up grades :)
His class is NOT boring if you see what he's doing with the ideas he uses in class. He combines learning with personal growth and an evaluation of how our culture shapes our beliefs and attitudes. He takes a while to get things graded but his class is very interesting.
Good prof. Accepts late work, with no points off. Disorganized and gives work back late. However, he is fair, but he can grade hard. Doesn't use the texbook alot. Quizzes on readings can be hard. Drops the lowest 6. Go to class, you won't get a good grade if you dont. You can use notes on the exams. Overall I enjoyed the class and him. Very fair.
Great professor. Disorganized but keeps class interesting. Laid back. Enjoyable class. Fair grader. Highly recommended.
He is a superb teacher, I actually looked forward to coming to class. I found his class to be very easy. I recommend him to everyone who actually prepared to learn.
He is a good professor. He is understanding and a fair grader. He is always available before and after class and if not you may always e-mail him and you will have a guaranteed reply back. Although what he teaches during the semester may seem uninteresting it actually helps you grow as a writer.
He is a great professor. He is very helpful. He always response to e-mail, and you can alway ask for his help. By the time, I have him he was too busy and have too many classes. Therefore, he alway returns works late. I highly recommended him, but he is not a good teacher for people whom English are their second language. He doesn't teach grammar.
Teaches with charisma :)
Very interesting class, not easy though. Gives lots of quizzes and reading. If you constantly work through the material, it is manageable. Shows many movies related to the material covered in class. Is a hard, but fair grader. Accepts late work and gives plenty of time to write the final research paper.
Very unique way of teaching. The topics are interesting and he will probably teach you things you were never aware of. You need the textbook, mostly in the beginning of the semester, since some of the quizzes relate to the readings. He does not hand out grades so you have to work for an A, but it's not impossible to get! Highly recommend him!
Very Intelligent Professor. He teaches his class in a very interesting manner. Lots of quizzes. Lots of materials to read. You will have plenty of time for writing your essays and research papers. He is very fair, but he is a bit hard grader. If you follow his directions for essays, you can get an A. Not an Easy A class, You have to work hard.
I recommend taking his class if you HAVE TIME. There's a weekly quiz,a midterm and final exam (identification & essay). Be prepared to write 4 response papers to poems, a midterm and final paper. Don’t expect to get all your papers back or grades - the chance is that he'll be grading your midterm exam by the end of the semester.
You will learn things that you won't learn anywhere else. He will show you a different view on society. One of the best Professors I have taken.
Professor Young is a great teacher. If you want to become a GREAT writer, he is the one to take. He does do a lot of quizzes, but he tells you what's on the quiz before hand. If you learn the terms, do your in class writings, seek help outside of school, you will do just great in his class =)
Nice, knowledgeable professor, treats everyone same, fair graded, helpful, great materials. Quizzes must be taken 15mn before starting lessons, they are very helpful for preparing the coming essays:6 lowers grades are gonna be droped. Itook his class in fall 2011 ( EN101A),spring 2012 (EN 102) got A. Highly recommended! Excellent Prof.
I think anyone looking for a professor that can help students move in the right direction regrading their writing skills and comprehension skills should defiantly take his class. A word of caution those who don't like to write about or discuss current social and political issues may find this class difficult.
Good professor. His lectures can get quite boring, you have to watch boring movies, and listen to him talk about boring politicalsocial philosophies. Also you definitely have to read your book and sometimes memorize long readings (Brave New World, Anarchism). Word of advice: don't wait till the last minute to write all your essays!
Best prof and so far my favorite prof in all of MC. Doesn't care if you're late, and a lot of things in his class are negotiable. When it comes to his lectures, he's candid and frank, and peaks your interest. Had a great semester with him!
This was the hardest class I've ever taken. English is my favorite subject but he never explained the assignments well and NEVER GRADED ANYTHING UNTIL FINALS. I was worried the whole time about what my grade was. Very disappointing.
I don't know how anyone could not love this guy's class. Frankly, he is the 2nd teacher since elementary school that has made me enjoy in english class. Granted he gives a lot of quizzes but they are very easy. He drops the lowest 3 scores. He's a fair grader. Let's you turn stuff in late too. If you show up and do the work this class is easy A!!
Dr Young is a really cool guy. He uses movies and online a lot in his class, which made it more fun for me. He is very fair and easy to talk to, very approachable. I thought I was gonna pass his class with a C, but he made everything so understandable and gave a lot of good feedback that I got an A and was really happy. Great professor overall!
AWESOME GUY! If you seriously don't pass his class, you should reconsider college. Movies are his main thing, he's an easy grader ( I guarantee an A), and he hilarious. Overall best teacher at MC.
Prof. Young is fascinating, a sharp orator, and a real pal. This class has been a whirlwind of rhetorical skill; political, literary, and linguistic research; and watching movies (El Cid, Beowulf) and TV shows (The Newsroom). There's an online quiz every night; he drops 3 lowest scores. Two big papers. Do NOT plagiarize - he has stories about that.
Such a great professor! You learn things that change your view on the world around you. He does take forever to grade but for this reason he is lenient with due dates. Make sure you email him or come see him to ask questions about assignments, he's always willing to help. Make sure you study for all the quizzes. He also drops 3 lowest quiz grades.
His class is super easy if you just read the book and do the simple timed online quizzes. There are other assignments, too, but you'll be okay if you follow the instructions in the book. He also helps you. If a "long assignment" is late and he has not finished grading them yet, it's still considered on time. Sometimes he will cancel classes.
i would not recommend him because he takes forever to grade, im at the end of the semester and he still has left alot of my assignments ungraded. there are alot of online quizzes to do through blackboard like one before each class. he can be chill most of the time but strict w attendance
He didn't discuss/go into detail about any of his instructions for the essays in class, which made things rocky. Rarely talked about our essays, and no peer editing in class. You watch videos in class that kinda relate to what he wants the essays to be about but didn't clarify any correlation or any significance. Quizzes ALL THE TIME on Blackboard.
Dr. Young is great. He's super clear about what to do and as long as you follow his instructions, there shouldn't be any reason not to get an A/B. You get a lot of online quizzes but the answers are literally exactly from the specific chapter the quiz is on so it's really easy. He's also not that hard or a grader, and very entertaining!
Dr. Young was a great professor. He offered a lot of extra credit quizzes from the book (drops the 3 lowest scores). He is very fair in gradung and you will get a lot of chances to improve your grade. Would recommend.
A lot of quizzes but every question on quiz relates to the chapter in the textbook. He drops the lowest 10 point assignments but there are more than 25 10 point assignments including quizzes. He is funny, chill, and a great person however he does not grade anything. You wont know your grade until after the final exam! Does not grade work at all.
Listen, if you want to pass any of his English classes you MUST do your work. . He gives 20 quizes all related to the book. He drops the lowest 3, but don't take them lightly. DO THEM, trust me. He is an honest and hard-working professor. He may not grade things quickly, but he has so many classes and assignments to worry about. He is amazing 10/10
His class can be summed up into 3 words basically. Essays, videos, and hw. His essays are pretty clear. He expects you to come up with a thesis regarding the class material and than defend it. You watch quite a few videos. The answers to the hw is formatted exactly the same way in the book, but you still have 3 a week on average. Overall great prof
Worst professor ever!! I don't understand how some people are saying his directions are clear and specific, when they are very broad and unclear. He took forever to grade my assignments, so when midterms and finals are around the corner expect to feel some anxiety. He also would complain a lot about how he was overworked and underpaid.
I took him for 101 and for 102 he was just as good. His class you watch MANY videos/movies, not just for fun, but for the correlation with your essay assignments. He isn't a strict grader and is willing to give you feedback as long as you ask. He is intellectual and isn't afraid to share his opinion. The one knock is that he takes time to grade.
He is the best professor I have had so far! He takes a while to grade, but you can ask him what your grade is at any time and gives great feedback. Also, your essay assignments are only late once he starts grading them, which can be a week or two. He will let you know when he is about to grade. Take him! hes's great!!
He gives lots of quizzes and essays. There are over 20 quizzes to do and material is from the book, so you should read a lot and take notes. He gives you a short amount of time for your quizzes. He is a tough grader and he grades late. He is funny sometimes, but I wouldn't recommend his class.
He is a very good teacher. He is willing to work with you. He is very easy going, and will give you time if you need it. He does assign a lot of work, but as long as you read what is asked you'll be good to go. attendance doesn't matter to him as much as other professors, he says he doesn't grade on attendance.
There are many opportunities for points in his class, particularly through the quizzes. The quizzes he gives also benefit you by expanding your critical thinking skills and writing abilities. The essays are very fun; the topics he chooses allow for a lot of creative leeway. He's also pretty lenient about late work. Very cute, very funny, take him!
Professor Young is a pretty nice teacher. He is relatively lenient with work, but be prepared to read a lot for online quizzes. If you ask this guy what to do to improve your grades in the class, he'll always give you a straight answer that helps.
Gives a lot of quizzes throughout the semester, which may end up helping your grade. However, he waited until the very end of the semester to grade our papers, and he didn't even post the grades to Blackboard, instead he said he put them into an excel document. He's a good teacher, just slow on grading.
I was in his class years ago and I still remember the things he taught me sometimes, something that really stuck with me was to always think twice with everything I see/hear.. in the media, in outlets, anything that provides us with information. There are messages we may be missing and it is important to think outside of the box. GREAT professor.
Prof. Young was a good professor since day 1. Even though I thought I wouldnt do well because I had a D for midterm and he is a very slow grader but when he grades he gives good feedback that helps for future essays. There are many quizzes and a lot of reading but overall he is a cool guy and if you pay attention to his feedbacks youll get an A.
Best english professor I've had. Takes a lot of time to grade things however gives great feedback and has real life convos. Makes class interesting and fun to go to. Stay on top of your quizzes and assignments and you'll get an A
Hes funny and genuine. Hes a good teacher and easy to consult. He grades papers slow though. Id not only like to be his student but also his friend.
He is very good in giving feedback and helping you to achieve your goal.
We got to watch movies that we would use as evidence in our essays. His lectures are pretty interesting. He gets very frustrated when people talk over him, and he says some weird things sometimes. He's a slow grader. Overall, a very interesting class with his teaching and he is also a great guy. He tells funny stories about his old students. Take!
For my online pandemic professors using Zoom, Dr. Young was the most organized with how he presented the class information. Learning online with Zoom is not a good situation, but he did a good job. I think he'd be great to take face-to-face, and he made Zoom teaching work by keeping it simple instead of using technology gimmicks in Zoom.
He was a really good professor and you can always get in contact with him if you needed a question.
This is not your ordinary English class. Dr. Young focuses on critical thinking- a skill useful for all school subjects and life. His material is thought-provoking, methodically chosen to engage students and enhance their view of the world. As a STEM major, I wasn't looking forward to taking ENGL but so glad I took his class. Straightforward & fun.
Quizzes were easy, but harsher grading on essays. Is flexible on grading deadlines though, just have to ask for expectations beforehand.
Despite being an English class, most of the quizzes and essays were based on comics. Questions would test your memorization of the comics rather than their literary content. For example, a quiz question may ask you what color suit a superhero was wearing during a scene. However, his feedback was helpful to understand the work he was looking for.
Loved this professors class, assignments based off of analysis and critical thinking. Homework consisted of two quizzes per week which were pretty tedious. He is a very caring professor, takes long to grade papers so you do not really need to turn them in until he grades your last "turned in" one. Lectures and assignments based off of comics.
You have to read old comic books and do a timed 200-question comprehension one attempt two to three times a week. No matter what anyone says I'd have rather written essays about ants than read these long and boring comic books. My dearest condolences to those who have taken this class and thought it was going to be "Oh fun comics!"
He was obsessed with batman. get ready for that
His love of Batman is very apparent. He assigned one essay at the beginning of the semester but hasn't graded half of my class's essay. It's the last day of school. He takes a while to grade and he isn't very good with time management. But he's lenient of when you turn in your essays.
Worst professor ever. Doesn't provide timely feedback, spends more time watching Batman than teaching you how to write, and is extremely vague with feedback. The quizzes take up a lot of your time are quite pointless. He will ask a question like, "What color shirt was Batman wearing in the 4th comic?" He doesn't teach.
Forces you to read 200 page Batman pdf comics along with 80 question quizzes that are timed based on how long it took HIM to complete Doesn't grade until the last week of the semester Doesn't teach about writing and yet is the harshest grader DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS
He is certainly a slow(lazy) grader of essays but he is forgiving. He has due dates but since he is a slow grader, his policy is that as long as it is turned in by the time he starts grading, he won't deduct any points. His quizzes are 70+ questions but certainly not difficult as long as you read it. It is all Batman comics which I think is easier
He's a chill guy, but I'm personally not a fan of his teaching style. I feel like I only did well in this class because English concepts are easy for me to grasp, but I can't speak for other people. However, I do think incorporating comics into assignments is creative. Gives easy quizzes about them too.
God awful Professor. The Professor just makes you read Batman Comics from 1940-2000 just to take a timed 80 MCQ quiz about random garbage in the comics. The Professor doesn't give feedback on papers because he grades your paper the end of the term. In class he reviews the quizzes, plays Batman movies, and yaps about Batman this, Batman that. 0/10
I wouldn't recommend this professor to anyone who struggles with writing. There aren't many lessons on writing skills or techniques. Feedback is often late and sometimes lacking. I genuinely had fun with the comics and liked writing the papers. I enjoyed this class more than any other English class I've taken.
+ The professor cares about the outcomes of his students + He is very understanding + The topics covered in class were interesting (news industry and genetic engineering) + Easily accessible - He goes on tangents a lot - Much of the class time was spent watching television/movies - Extreme course load for summer course. take fall/spring instead.
i honestly think he does his own ratings, he actaully has made me bawl my eyes so many times because his material is so confusing especially the outline for essays.
The material that we cover is very confusing and doesn't make sense at all. There was a lot of unreasonable quizzes and we didn't practice writing at all in class.
One word: Batman.
The stuff he mostly covers isn't relevant to English at all. It's mostly just D.C comics with Batman and he gives out quizzes based on the comics that he gives you which doesn't make sense. I guess it was fun, but I didn't learn anything from his class. If you want to take ENGL102, then I wouldn't recommend him.
Dr. Young made it clear on the first day of class how much he hates AI and clearly said how he despises anyone who makes use of it (so be aware of that), don't think he won't notice that you used AI, he will notice and will give you 0 on the paper. He was very clear on his grading criteria but he is a tough grader. His quizzes were a bit strange.
I have scarified my grade so you don't take this class please do not take this class under any circumstance he is terrible at grading and not clear at all this class was a waste of money and time you are better off with another teacher I don't know who is giving he these ratings his class is a 1/10 at best please its not worth it
This guy take for ever to grade a paper and the day he does it he give you a terrible grade I agree with that no student should use Ai to write a paper but what is the use of writing it and talking about grammar it always something about formatting or grammar this is one of the worst class I haver attended and he is boring don't take it please!!!!
Amazing professor, he is very chill and just wants you to succeed, don't have second thoughts of taking him.
This is a terrible teacher arguer your work and probably regrate his career choice so he makes it his mission for you to regrate taking this class accused me of using Ai several times and gave me an F I don't know the hiring process, but this guy needs to be fired I have never regrated anything in my life as taking this class a waist of time
SAVE YOURSELF. HE IS ACTUALLY THE WORST. Please explore your options before you take him. I have a therapist because of him. He never grades on time, and when he does grade, he just accuses you of using AI. never responds to emails. He enjoys failing people and embarrassing them. I actually have no idea how he has a 3.3 that's a lie.
In the beginning of the semester he already told me to drop his class because I was failing, despite there being 3 months left of work that could bring my grade up to pass. He is very unhelpful when giving "lectures" (he'd just read the instructions out loud). He's a tough grader and takes a lifetime to submit grades and the workload is heavy.
He hates AI and dismissed over half my group for using it - (people used it even to reply to their classmates on Blackboard, which is honestly ridiculous!) I think it was fair, and I respect his principles. The only drawback is that he's a slow grader - it took him 2,5 months to grade the first essay, by which time I'd forgotten what I wrote.
He loathes AI. Even though I wasn't caught using it or never used it. I know he has probably accused a few students in the past using AI (even though some are falsified). He is also a very slow grader and I never received my grade for assignments that were submitted like 3 weeks ago. Interesting how somehow past reviews said he loved Batman too.
I'm usually the one that can handle a handful but unfortunately this class was not my cup of tea. I learned nothing from his in person lectures. I unfortunately feel like I lost more than I gained. This class wasn't very helpful with any student with an attention deficit or if it takes u a bit more time to understand certain topics.
Barely teaches during class time. Seriously, do yourself a favor and choose another professor. It's not worth the headache.
Spring Semester class. He assigns empty readings for quizzes (you have more questions than time given - horrible). Classtime is dedicated to discussing the readings (which eventually you'll have to do a writing exercise for) and barely for learning writing. He assigns 4 papers and the topics are dense. This class gives me anxiety.
took a online summer semester with Dr Young, was very well organized and clear expectations.
Took a online summer semester with Dr. Young, thought I'd write a quick rating, found it very helpful and well organized. Thanks.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASSES. Not only does he take forever to grade so you have no concept of what your grade will be until after the semester is over, he has a strange perversion with Batman and Superman. Learned nothing in class and only read comics and watched Batman movies. He graded extremely hard for his lack of instruction.
BE careful, unless you want to have 3 minutes for a quiz and to read a book everyday!
You'll lost your money, be careful, the teacher gives quiz every day and long text to study, you don't have enough time to read them. Not enough time for the quiz, so, at the end you learn nothing.
You want an E? Than go
I lost my hair
Good teacher
Fantastic professor! My only grievance is sometimes his English 101 class felt like a philosophy class due to its difficulty.
The themes covered in the class are interesting, but there is a lot of reading—around 10 pages before each class. The grammar and reading tests are very challenging. Generally, the professor clearly cares about student learning.
